[Q] [q] why are people unrooting?? - EVO 4G General

I have been reading several forums, and it seems that quite a few people are in a hurry to unroot their phones in order to download the latest OTA update from HTC.
WHY WOULD YOU EVER WANT TO UNROOT JUST TO DOWNLOAD THE LATEST OTA ??
Why would you want to risk breaking your root, possibly permantly, just to install an update that is basically the same as the previous one and is going to bring some bugs with it? From what I am reading, the new update is not all that wonderful.
One of the purposes of any HTC OTA update is to break as many roots as possible and to patch the phones so that they cannot be rooted. And, if the bootloader is locked, which several people claim it is, your phone may never be rooted again, at least not perm rooted.
IF YOUR ROOT IS KILLED, YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE FLASH YOUR FAVORITE LOOKING CUSTOM ROMS, YOUR CUSTOM ROM THAT MAKES YOUR PHONE RUN SO MUCH FASTER, THAT CUSTOM ROM THATS GIVING YOU THAT GREAT BATTERY LIFE,...
IF YOUR ROOT IS KILLED, YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO CONTROL YOUR PHONE'S CPU, YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO RESTORE THAT BACKUP, THAT POSSIBLY SAVED YOUR PHONE, YOU WILL NOT HAVE ACCESS TO THAT FREE WIFI TETHERING, YOU WILL NOT BE ALBE TO DELETE THOSE UNWANTED APPS THAT ARE WASTING STORAGE SPACE ON YOUR PHONE, YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO FREEZE ALL THOSE SERVICES THAT YOUR TASKMANAGER CANNOT TOUCH THAT ARE KILLING YOUR BATTERY,...
Sorry I wrote a book here, but it makes no sense to me. If you want to try Android 2.3, why not just download the rooted version and maintain your root along with its many advantages?

I just answered a post in another thread about this .... people are out of their effin minds especially when the software is out there already and has been for a while... Hey there a million what do I do posts and people getting flamed and the sensitive ones going stop doing that... Hey you stupid enough to update your phone OTA f-it you deserve what you get. forum is here to educated and help and if you dont want to use that help then you get what you deserve... Dont mean to be a **** but I guess for some you will feel that I am oh well

A lot of us unrooted prior to the update because we were expecting a hell of alot more than what we were given. I could have waited for one of the devs to give us a rooted version but it's like being given a present and told not to open it till tomorrow. Had I known the specifics of the update I definitely would have waited. All in all not a big deal though, they'll figure out how to root this soon until then I'll just piss and moan about this half ass update.

I didn't get a choice, my phone died after flashing the new radio. When i got my replaced it had the latest ota already installed. Also went from Hardware 003 to 004. Guess I now have to give up flashing cold turkey

Within the same day a rooted version was out.

Do we really need a thread to explain the obvious? People are just impatient and stupid.

Yup but I felt the need to get let down a few hours sooner. But I will say I knew in advance that it would more than likely screw my chance to root for a while. I made my own bed no need for me to come on here and whine about it like I see a lot of others doing.

The purpose of this thread was to discourage the next person from making the same mistake that others made, because people right now are still desperate to get the update by any means necessary.

When you do that, you run that chance of an exploit never being found. That may very well be the case if you have S-ON.

The dissapointment in the leaked OTA wasn't enough to dissuade people i guess.

If they come to xda then what in the blue help makes you think they will miss the stock odex Rom in the dev section?
If they come here for help then they already know better.

I agree fully with this statement but like I said the leaked version has been out for like a month already... no guarantees they can fix the new bootloader... I know better though lol

Impatience

I unrooted because there was no reason for me to be rooted. The only benefit of rooting for me was to have the free wifi tethering.
When my wife did the latest OTA update she was getting 4g in places I didn't get it. Her phone was also downloading on 4g at 10 megs down using the speedtest.net app. With multiple roms I have never gotten above 2 megs down, when I unrooted and went stock I was getting faster and better 4g.
Every Rom I installed was buggy, So if I am going to deal with roms that don't work or take away features or burn your eyes in the dark I would rather just deal with the stock sprint phone. I am also fortunate enough to be able to afford the hotspot service from sprint so I would rather pay for reliable fast service.
These are the reasons I unrooted. I understand that everyone has their own reasons for what they do with their devices and I respect them please respect mine. I am just answering the question that was asked in this post.

Well, people HAVE missed it, and yes, they SHOULD know better. However, some need more help than others.

I was tempted but I knew someone that was stock and I let him go first. I also knew everyone would be posting here. I now run the rooted Rom put out the same day the ota was released. Thank god I held on to my senses and waited for it.

I'm not unrooting anytime soon. Couple of reasons.
1.The big one is I'm not a huge fan of Sense.
2.All the bloatware that comes on the stock rom that slows it down, and takes up room.
3.For my battery!!!!

unrooted
Unrooted, tried out stock Gingerbread, rooted it again with rooting hormones.
It's not that "hard"...

Hi guys,
As you can tell by my username, I am completely new to Android, and naturally to hacking it! Currently I have a stock hero, and and contemplating rooting and flashing it, although I'm having some reservations. While this is my first post, I have been lurking and reading the forums for 2 or 3 weeks now since Damage got a hold of the first Sprint leak. While the whole process looks pretty simple, I have seen how random many of the problems, such as the audio issue are. Some people seem to have no problems, while others have a s#!tstorm of them.
I am not normally one to fix things that aren't broken, and (knock on wood) I haven't really had any of the issues others with stock phones have had. I have never once had a problem with sending or receiving MMS, and most of the lag and quirkiness I am able to live with. On the flip side of that coin, I have read up on Google's Android dev pages all of the changes and enhancements made in 1.6 and 2.0, and am itching to get them on my phone. Like a lot of other people, I am eagerly awaiting Sprint's official release, but am not holding much hope that it will be here this month.
In any event, since I registered I figured I would just say "Hi," while I decide what to do (becoming impatient waiting for the official) and hope that the novel I just wrote hasn't bored anyone to death

I'm just kidding. Welcome, welcome. If you need help, there are plenty of people here knowledgeable enough to help you in anyway. Just make sure you use the SEARCH button thoroughly!
Otherwise, cya around.
welcome in!
welcome aboard! its really not hard to root and try new roms. i would recommend rooting and backing up then trying a stable 1.5 rom like fresh, do a nandroid back up of it then dive into the 2.1 roms. you can always go back to a nandroid back up if you ave issues. read as much as you can first.
i flashed over to the newest fresh with pri=170_03 and prl=60663 and havent had any issues. nothing works quite perfectly (very, very minor issues) but then again stock doesnt either (as you have noticed and commented on).
dip your toes in and have a go. it is worth it. the devs here have done a fantastic job.
cheers,
ryan
Frankly, I see no harm in at least TRYING a custom 2.1 ROM out, since during the process of initially rooting, you are told to do a "nandroid" backup. With that backup, you can go back to the stock ROM should you have unbearable problems with a custom one. (or if you just don't like them..)
It should be noted that when the OFFICIAL 2.1 drops, theres a very good chance that they will have patched the root exploit, leaving you with the stock sprint rom (and bloatware)
My suggestion is this.. Test out a few of the custom roms.. Fresh 2.0d and Damagecontrol 2.06 are great places to start.. If you don't like them, go back to your 1.5 stock or a 1.5 custom rom, and wait for the official 2.1 and a custom rom based off of that..
Just my two cents.
When did this forum become "xda-developers-personals.com"?
Welcome Noobmodder, you will come to enjoy the excellent resources this forum has to offer. Beware though, it could be detrimental to your personal relationships as flashing and modding can be as addictive as drinking and gambling! lol
Speaking of, I've been meaning to say this to you troy..
I don't know what Troy you are speaking of, but my fiance is from Troy, Tn.. So you probably know each other if that's what your troy means... Because from all that I've seen, there's not too many people out that way..lol..
Thanks for the welcome! The main reason I am a little nervous about the whole process is the hero is my only Sprint phone, so I don't have a backup phone if this one gets messed up, nor can I afford one at the moment. But, it's just a phone after all, so I think I'm gonna go for it. I am gonna try DC 2.06, or see what RegawMOD 2.1 has in store for us a little later this evening.
Thanks in advance for any help! We'll see how this goes!

Basically, once you have a recovery image flashed, and a nandroid of your stock rom, there really isn't much to worry about (as far as a brick goes)
Flash away!
Let us know if you need any help. If you have been lurking for a couple of weeks you probably won't have any issues rooting and flashing, but just the same let us know if you do run into any problems.
If you have not rooted yet I recommend using Fresh's kitchen.

Modding is not a spectator sport. You need to decide if you want to get your hands dirty because staying on the bleachers you won't see much
Just make sure you keep reading everything you can find on this forum until you feel comfortable giving it a shot. If there's something you don't understand or something that's bothering you then hold off. It's better to approach modding your phone with full confidence and some knowledge under your belt then find yourself on your knees begging for mercy from Sprint's local customer service czar.
Ok guys!
Just rooted and flashed DC 2.06 and I have a question. Does this version of DC still need the CDMA Auto PRL setting changed like in the past?

I've been monitoring this for a while, and with both Flipz's .03 radio and his .10 radio, I haven't needed to change it. Of course, this is with mulitple restarts thanks to the audio bug.
Disregard this post
It's pretty hard to brick your phone, unless you flash a radio.img incorrectly. Like I said, there's plenty of people that are experienced enough with Android to help you out. Not to mention, almost any errors you encounter will mostly already be documented and have solutions.

My New Galaxy Note, pre-installed with ICS

I just received my new Galaxy Note from Amazon.de. Tried to update it with Kies to ICS it wasn't working ! Then I checked and it came pre-installed with ICS ! YAY ! I thought I'd post in case any of the devs were interested if it was different in any way/if the black crush was still evident.

Yes it is.. my bad!
I was surprised to found it pre.installed but I bought it from Amazon.de so it can only be stock (one would hope).
Highly doubt it comes preinstalled with ICS! I have received mine from UK (see sign) and it came with gingerbread!
Got my first motherboard it was gingerbread KK1 in both cases!
And now that i'm getting the second motherboard in Samsung Service Center they told me i will get a motherboard with gingerbread again!

Not quite true. There is an issue with SOME existing GSN units, but not all. There is a best effort utility somewhere on these forums that can give an indication which devices are, or might be affected by flawed eMMc software/hardware. Its not totaly conclusive, but its a good indicator. The fact that Samsung have pre-loaded ICS is good news, and they have either ensured the hardware is 100% or they have an updated version of ICS, or done both. I'm wondering if the OP could post which version of ICS they have ie 4.0.3 or 4.0.4 or something else. The OP have bought this brand new from Amazon.de and can expect to be able to use the device fully, as per the instruction manual without fear, including factory re-sets. If the device croaks, its RTM to Amazon for replacement or refund.
I'm wondering if the OP solarboy, could let us all know how well the GPS runs with google maps and navigation (should be near perfect with no screen flicker/jumping) and would he be prepared to run the Check brick bug App. Post the results. Its a simple app that reads hardware detail and displays the result, does nothing else, and its easy to remove afterwards.
Personally, I think this is a positive move. I did hear on the grapevine that Amazon are getting slightly pissed with the high number of returns its getting with the GSN, maybe Samsung have finally woken up. I do hope so.
Hi im at work atm but ive already posted in this thread the full specs. Turn by turn works great so far and i didnt notice flickering. Ill try to test at lunchtime...

That's good they started to ship with ICS.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but apart from the fact it says 'yes' to the brick question, the rest of the info does point to the problematic eMMc. So, what to do. Firstly, there is a factory re-set option in the settings menu, the user manual does not stipulate how many times you can re-set. But we already know that people have done a few re-sets and got a brick, others like me, have done several factory re-sets without problem (apart from other issues which I have posted elsewhere, but nothing to do with re-sets), and yet we have all got the brick chip. So, for a new owner, you can either run the device as is and wait for a software fix from Samsung, which will have to be verified by developers on these forums, because Samsung inexplicably does not publish detailed update logs, or simply say to Samsung, "I do not want this product, I would like my money back". In the EU that is a consumer right within errrr, 7 or 14 days, not sure check, but you can do that. Amazon have helpful details on that. The next option would be to root you device, all consumer rights going out the window the moment you do that, and flash something like CM9. If you choose that route, please do lots of reading on how that is done with ICS already present. In fact I cant remember seeing anyone flashing CM9 to a device with ICS pre-installed, I'm guessing it shouldn't make any difference.
Elsewhere on these forums, the Indian GSNs have been receiving ICS updates, or at least some of them have. This 'might' be the fix that guys have been waiting for, but as previously mentioned, Samsung do not state exactly what their updates actually do.
Its a sorry state of affairs that all we have to rely on is guess work, the work of independent developers, and the sad stories of guys who now have bricks. Samsung could have made it soooo simple, but no.
Edit: Solarboy, thanks for posting the screen shot.
Not the happiest of posts, but I hope it gives a full picture, and helps in some way.
Well for now I,m going to leave "as is"; after Winmo6.5 this is heaven. I'm sure I'll at least root at some point, I was posting so as to let you all know.. I'm still exploring androidland!

How i support this sentence! Even thought i got my Note bricked 2 times in a row.. i won't change to any other phone in the market currently because i really love my Note

Quick trick to get OTA Jellybean

Not sure if this is where this goes but this worked for me on 3 Nexus S 4G's today..
All of them on different accounts. One is flashed to MetroPCS and still get's Jellybean love!
Remember it will not work right away, just when your sick of doing it BAM..
One phone i tried for 2 hours and nothing..Then just before my friend left my house i tried once more and it worked..
If this does not work for you, well, at least i gave you something to do while you were bored!
But i swear it worked on 3 phones today!
================================================== =============================
Open the Settings application.
Select Apps.
Select the All drawer, and select Google Service Frameworks.
First, Force Stop the application, then Clear Data.
Now that the Google Service Frameworks are reset, you may check for an update, by selecting About Phone in Settings, and select System Update.
**The last update check should be garbled. Around 1969.**
--------------->If this did not work, try these steps several times. This is important, IT MAY TAKE SEVERAL TRIES BEFORE A RESULT.
Give a thanks if it works for you and reply back with results..
Enjoy
** Not sure about this breaking push notification on apps?
First I heard of this. I guess try at your own risk but my wife's Nexus S 4G seems to be working great after using this method.
## Maybe try to back up apps that use push notifications with Titanium Backup and reinstall after if u have any issues.
Just a thought not sure if that will help!

**The last update check should be garbled. Around 1969.**

I thought this broke the push notification on apps that use push, no?
I decided that I could resolve the push if need be and went ahead and tried this again (did it previously on other updates). Tried about five times, walked away for about 15 minutes. Tried again and it worked. Update is downloading now.
Cool. Glad its working for people! Enjoy

So, I just switched to the NS4G from my ET4G because it's been having some hardware issues (Not really relevant for this, but figured I would introduce myself to the Nexus S community this way haha...)
This is what worked for me:
*Force Stop Google Services Framework
*Clear Data On Google Services Framework
*Wait about 5 minutes
*Checked for updates
I did it 1 time, and it worked for me. Not too sure if it'll work that way for everyone, but I believe it's def worth trying.
didnt force stop at all but clear framework and checked now, didnt work.
Read your post, cleared data,
waited 5 mins.
checked and now update.
Thanks file size 121.6mb
ok, so this means only one thing could be possible...Sprint lied to us. they told us the update would start the 6th, but it didn't start until yesterday. I can't count how many posts I saw from people who tried this and it didn't work...now, miraculously, it starts working when we know it's out?!?!?!?!
Look at the facts, people!! Sprint lied to us and the update did not start the 6th like they said. if it had, this would have worked on sept 6th, and would not just magically start working on sept 10th!
This worked. I'm on jellybean now. It took over 26 attempts. No joke. But so worth it.

So question for the New Jelly Bean update... Teamviewer came out with there Quicksuppprt app. It says it only works on Stock firmware, Non modded. It works on Stock ICS but doesnt work on Stock JellyBean. Is any one else having this problem. Im not sure if its because i flashed Jellybean via ODIN yesterday since i didnt want to wait for the OTA to get pushed or is it just the fact that it doesnt work on JellyBean NS4g's yet
Also im rooted, forgot to try before i rooted my device :/
Can anyone who waited for the OTA to get pushed to there phone confirm or not if they are able to Download and install "TeamViewer QuickSupport" to there Jellybean NS4g device
Thanks and much appreciated

are you kidding??
1. they never said it's a two-part update. they said updates would start the 6th...nothing about two parts. even the reps I spoke with said I should have had it already!! The funny thing is, not even two hours after I complained (and openly admitted to having looked on XDA for it and it wasn't out yet) people started getting the OTA. That's pretty coincidental, no?
2. they owed us an update. we are nexus owners. we get every update until the hardware can't run the firmware. If they don't like that, they can choose to stop selling the nexus line...there's the door. If it's a phone that's only on one carrier and the carrier doesn't update, google should step in and release the factory image immediately. Now don't take what I'm saying the wrong way. I don't mean they LEGALLY owe us an update. I mean since we own a development device, they would be pretty stupid to turn their backs on us....many of us have given google a percentage of the code used in final release versions of android. If they turn their backs on those people, they will be pretty screwed. They use quite a few features from roms that were here before google ever had the idea to do that. For example, swipe to clear notifications...that came from CM team. It sure as HELL wasn't google's baby, that's for sure!! That's why I say they owe us an update. Whether any one of us has personally contributed code or not, we have still contributed to the android project by testing the code that the developers here contributed to android.
if they are releasing a rom for two phones it wont be a single wave the galaxy nexus owners got it first because they bought the newer phones and when we bought our nexus s's they never said they would update it forever we are lucky we got it they could have been like nope you have to be a galaxy nexus and honestly we are lucky because most companys would have made us upgrade to get it or make our own i was right beside you waiting for the update and as soon as i had the image files on here i odin'ed them to my phone most sprint reps have no idea whats going on with roms and such but i know i count myself lucky to have a phone like this and not be stuck like i was with my evo shift alot of companys owe us for bettering there product but how many actually pay
wifi
Tried this using 3g or 4g all day and nothing, then tried with wifi and if worked like a charm the 1st time i tried, dont know why it worked out this way, but to those for which this method is not working when connected to 3g or 4g try using this method while connected to wifi, it might just work as it did for me.
Doing the checkin CMD does nothing but the same thing as going through the settings about phone and clicking system update..
Haven't tried this method yet.. May try soon..
Hopefully that OTA hits my way some time soon..
I forgot to add that I was on Wifi also...

Sprint stores had the file so people who had a replacement or a friend inside could of got the update on the 7th.
Sprint never said it was a two part update, but they said it would be a slow rollout for ns4g not gnex, over 8 days between which leaves you to believe the first half would be gnex, second half ns4g. Gonzo posted the files he got at the service center hours before anyone got the OTA link posted so the files were out since the 6th for both phones. SO my point is big deal it was only 4 days. Better than 4 months for ICS and deff better then whats going on over at verizon. Sprint told the truth. Not all reps know the facts. I worked for target and it doesnt mean i knew when we were getting new shipments of products. You should be mad that Sprint didnt explain the process but OTA 4 days later is better than no OTA.
Hopefully, you didnt quit your job or something like that to get the update on the 6th because thats your fault.
but cheer up, you have it now. Play around with the smoothness and yell out "I CANT BELIEVE IT'S NOT BUTTER!!!"
I have been trying to get this to work the last couple of days with no success.
Would having an unlocked bootloader prevent me from getting the OTA? If so, how do I lock the bootloader only?

Thoughts on the Sprint Varient

Ive been a long time lurker on this site prolly since the GSII-- I dont post much then , or with me GSIII or Note 2- I guess thats why that account no longer exists. So with my purchase of the Note Edge i knew this would be my go to place for any information or eventually ROM's-- i gotta say that normally i never spent more then a day with Touchwiz- usually rooting and flashing within 24 hours of purchase. Ive had the phone foe about 4 days and.... HOLY MOLY this phone is slooow... so much crap is running-- 3gb of ram and 2 and half of it is always used-- sprint zone and fb keep updating and re downloading even though i continuously uninstall them daily and revert to original software versions. Now i finally understand peoples hatred towards touchwiz.. im used to ASOP-- I coulda swore touchwiz was NOT that bad in the GSII days ;-( although i have faith the dev. will take off eventually with this phone... if there were other options i might have considered going else where-- im coming from a rooted note2) But i dont think there is anything remotely better then samsung-- as bad ass as the phone is spec'd out to be i thought it would be as zippy as the nexus--- but it is most definitely slower then my note- Also since ive been ot of the loop this KNOX stuff is all new to me--basically from what i gathered by googling any root will void the warranty on the device? ive never ever sent a phone in to samsung but there is times ive gone to A Sprint tech center for help--will they turn me away if its 0x1? well i just wanted to stop by and say hi to this forum-- im beginning the process to acquire files so i can root my phone tonight-- id think the sky is the limit with the things we can do with out phones--- Much thanks to the DEV's that make this possible!!
Well your sprint one seems to be acting funny.. I'm on my T-Mobile Note Edge, and I started from the G1. This phone is really smooth, no errors, and for the first time really no reason for me to have to root my phone and get rid of bloat ware to speed things up! And that was before I disabled the bloat ware anyways. You could say I'm also waiting for a way to root without tripping Knox. I'm kinda curious how ASOP or CyanogenMod will look like on this phone, and if they'll be able to use the edge productively. I'm actually throughly pleased with the phone, especially with how the home launcher is setup. My only bug is the fact that the second favorite edge doesn't allow for reorganization. That's my 2 cents. I hope your experience becomes more enjoyable

Let me restate...i kinda sounded like a whiney brat with my last/first post. I realize that we as a group aa the less then 1% that care about specs.. and ver numbers. Im just not used to TouchWiz trying to do everything for me yet not the things i want it to do. for example every time I touch it text entry field I have a keyboard icon on the top of the notification bar...prompting me to choose Input method EVERYTIME?!? everyday I get sprint zone adverts in my notification bar even though I uninstall it every night before bed.. and multiple times a day I'm asked if I would like to sign in for Picasa.. i say no 3 or 4 times a day.. i cant figure out how to delete it. I miss the custom roms where all this bs is not even installed. Granted i knew there wasn't much support when i took the jump.. and honestly these issues would be the same with the regular note 4... id most definitely be willing to throw some $ to a recocognized established dev out there ... im miss my paranoid android and illusion roms :-/ but i know nothing out there can compare to the note edge at the moment...!
I have none of the issues you speak of. My only real issue is with kit Kat since I can't write to my sd card but other than that I am good with my phone.
I'm using the AT&T stock version and haven't encountered any issues except I waited to long to send it back to get the white version. Lol. Other than that I like the device.

I usually use CWM, but that's only because it's old school. Right now I chose not to install it in the last step of that thread because I have never used TWRP before. I have to say that I like the touch interface.
Besides getting the sprint variant of auto root you also need the sprint variant of TWRP. I posted a guide with basic steps including getting private mode working with xposed

Inquiry to join up with fellow Moto Z / Z Force owners (Verizon) to work on root.

Hello all! Just Inquiring to the geniuses that float around on this site about working to help bring root to this device. I have all the standard things (wired connection to PC, adb access, etc.). Just wondering if anyone needed any extra help or if they need someone to test methods out.
Before I get flamed, I DO know the risks of running commands incorrectly, and running them not knowing if it will work, not work or brick the device.
Currently looking into the mod interface as well. (Might be useful)
unless I understand incorrectly the biggest issue isn't root itself but the needed boot.img that requires an unlocked bootloader because if Android 6.
I'm going to inquire with Moto and see if they would be so gracious enough to unlock my bootloader since the option is there in dev settings. I know this might be a lost cause but maybe if I can get that done, and upload any stock images for people to tinker around with, do you believe it would help the dev community find an exploit?

Will not happen. Verizon won't let them. Just wait for the unlocked version to come out and a dev to get that.
Question: when the unlocked version comes out, that won't matter to us stuck using big red's version, will it?

Dont know. It could or it might not. It could lead to the finding of an exploit that we can use. When that comes out we have better odds. Heck we might just be able to do a simple flash and flash some verizon stuff....Prob not knowing verizon but it could happen. My advice is not to update until we see how the unlocked versions development is going. But as of right now no one is working on this phone.
Good odds tho. Unlocked comes out and people start working on it to unlock even more stuff for more mod development we might get lucky and get some trickle down exploits that will free us.
But knowing verizon i bet they have something in the works to force people to update. Because they are shady like that. Oh here is a new moto mod. And its only $20 and will add like wireless charging and a second sd card slot....but it wont work unless you use this software update. And oh by the way it fixes that exploit. I could see them doing something like that. Using a cheap mod that would be awesome like a mod that gives wireless charging and a second micro sd card slot to force us to update to use it and patch a exploit.
Great phone only phone i have ever had that i did not require root and a bootloader unlock. Hell its the only phone i will use stock...Well i use nova launcher but not to speed it up. Just to block the verizon bloatware from my app list. God i cant wait for them to load down the phones with all the yahoo bloat now. My god help us next year.
yahoo maps
yahoo messenger
yahoo news
yahoo search
Just to name a few of the crap they will load down. Get a 32gig phone. 5gigs of it will be verizon and yahoo apps you will never use that cant be uninstalled.
If our project was only gaining root access, then the Verizon Moto Z / Z Force currently has vulnerabilities listed under quadrooter.
http://blog.checkpoint.com/2016/08/07/quadrooter/
The international version does come out soon and hopefully we can get some progress on the bootloader!
As far as gaining root access, if I knew how to code we would already have it since every Moto Z / Z Force has 3 of the quadrooter vulnerabilities. If you want screenshots of which ones and their details let me know :3

That's a bold statement...
Do you have a development background? I wasn't sure from your first post and your last one.
Not well enough to attempt any of these vulnerabilities on my own. Each of the three vulnerabilities allows users to access root privilege on the device without the device being rooted.
I'll put the three vulnerabilities here.
1. https://www.codeaurora.org/invalid-path-check-ashmem-memory-file-cve-2016-5340.
2 and 3. https://www.codeaurora.org/use-afte...tions-kgsl-module-cve-2016-2504-cve-2016-2503
2 and 3 both are very similar, hence the reason for one URL.

Been messing around with my development kit. Good chance of a bootloader unlock and root with this. Bad news is its going to be over $125 for you to get the dev kit. But I think I might be on to something. Won't go into details on here because we all know Verizon watches for stuff like this.
Still gathering more info before I test anything since this is my daily driver. I'll start work when I get my back up phone.
Method will require a dev kit and a PC. So it's not going to be something you can just plug into your PC

This sounds very promising! I've been doing a bit of research and I have a much broader understanding of how gaining root access is accomplished, but not necessarily the bootloader.
I can save up some money and grab a dev kit as well if you want another set of hands on this.
If you need my email let me know, but i've been messing around with some of the exploits and once i get back home (hooray for IT job) i'm going to try out the system-less root, then go from there.
Good findings, and I believe you're on the right track! I read up on what the mods can access and control on the Android system and I'm actually impressed by what it can access and do. Heck, maybe we can even get a script going to utilize most moto mods to allow access to certain areas that we need, aside from the extra battery. I doubt that one will allow any kind of unintended access to areas of the phone. :silly:
If I can grab any kind of root access, would images be helpful to the much smarter people here?

I figured the system for the mods would be the easiest way in. Working on a mod with my dev kit after that I'm going to start messing around more with seeing what I can do. There has to be something in here. First phone to use them first version of moto mods. There is somthing
Good chance root may happen tonight. Meet more work on it. But it won't be something everyone can do. Will require aoto mod dev kit and a fair amount of work. But if I can get it working tonight there seems to be some hope.
in4updates. Great work and keep it up! Only reason I want root is for new emojis haha. I will most likely unroot once 7.0 releases (assuming we get root before we get 7.0)

As of right now im back to working on my Moto mod so it will be a week or two before i go back to this.
Progress will be very slow. This is my only phone i sold my 6p so i cant do anything to risky on this. I got some ideas on working out a cheaper version. Drop the price of hardware needed from $200+ to $80.

Method will require a dev kit and a PC. So it's not going to be something you can just plug into your PC
