Samsung Galaxy S2 w/ NFC Indian Version Quick Review (UPDATE: No NFC [for now]) - Galaxy S II General

Hey,
I finally got my SGS2 and its awesome!
https://picasaweb.google.com/tanmay.sonawane/SamsungGalaxyS2
I won't go into reviews and stuffs thats already been reviewed and said over 100 times.
I'll just jot down whatever the Indian version has different from its other brothers.
1. So apparently the Indian version ships with a Samsung Leather Case (as seen in the pic below among other standard accessories) :
https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/Rm_zEUrNlkE4djMA-JLVBg?feat=directlink
2. The Indian version seems to come pre-installed with the XWKE8 update. Correct me if wrong but afaik XWKE7 is the latest.

}
3. The NFC was so far the highlight feature but I'm still not able to find any mention of it anywhere. If our XDA Korean members can help me find out, that'd be great!
A test with an Application called ZDevice Test was unable to detect the presence of a NFC Chip.
4. Contrary to rumors I didn't find any 8Gb SD Card preinstalled.
5. No Music Hub.
I'll post more as and when I find any differences.
If you have any doubts of your own, feel free to ask! I'm prolly gonna be up all night
Cheers!
Edit:
I took a pic of the back. And I guess this is the NFC Sensor? Can anyone confirm this?
http://cl.ly/3Y2R080f3D0k1A392S0Q/NFC_.jpg
Edit 2:
Ok so I'm pretty sure (according to all comments) the Indian version DOES NOT have NFC. Samsung India gave us false dreams and broke our hearts!
Edit 3:
Ok I've done some initial tests with the battery and there are 2 scenarios:
1. (Yesterday) 1am to 10am (on Standby) : AirPlane Mode On : Battery Drain just 4% (from 60% to 56%)
2. (Today) 3am to 10am (on Standby) : Power Save Mode On : Battery Drain 26% (from 30% to 4%)
So inshort the Android System battery bug exists. Here's a screenshot of the battery tool for usage from 1pm June 3 to 10 am June 4 :
Edit 4 :
According to Letsbuy, the official retail partner for selling the SGS2 in India, NFC will be activated in the Future Ice Cream Sandwich update.
Letsbuy said:
Samsung India Update 04-Jun-2011: All the handsets purchased from Letsbuy.com on pre-order shall be equipped with ON board NFC chipset,Which shall be usable after upgrade of OS Android 3.0 honeycomb(Code name Ice Cream Sandwitch).(Future Update)

Well the credibility of this post is not yet known. Check out the above reply made here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=14446675&postcount=2411
Edit 5 :
According to this article. NFC Sensor is embedded onto the body in SGS2 as opposed to the backpanel in Nexus S.
So we still might stand a chance with Indian SGS2's having NFC.

Do you see the yellow tinge on the left with a gray background and low brightness?
Edit: And congrats on being the first of us here to get the Indian version and making the rest of jealous

Yes there is a slight yellow tint when you check it with this page : http://fiddle.jshell.net/qFxsC/1/show/
Looks like this is a global issue and every SGS2 produced so far will have it.
But let me add that this is in no way a major issue.
With normal phone usage I bet it's impossible (if at all) to notice.
I assure you, any normal user, if not told about this yellow tint will not even come to know. Its that unnoticeable!

Thanks for the confirmation.
Was hoping against hope that they'd have fixed it in later production batches, however doesn't look like it.
Enjoy the phone!

Yeah, I agree, looks like it's very minor in most of the cases reported here.
Hope you don't have any of the other possible defects being mentioned here.

Maybe you're not able to see it(which is a blessing in disguise!).
People here are yet to see a picture of a screen without that issue although the severity seems to vary.

Can u list the bands please.

Can you post a pic of the back and the back cover?

Do you have the Pink Camera Spot problem?
And I don't think the i9100 will have NFC unfortunately, only the i9101.

Hi Tanmay, Congrats! I want to know how does it feel in the hand - too big, manageable, will get used to? I know this has been done to death, but still would like to know.

Hi tanmay for how much time you charged it

Hi Tanmay!.. Congrats again
Can you post a pic of the backplate and battery?.. Then I can figure out (I've developed on NFC hardware earlier in my Job) if the NFC Antenna are there. Please do.

I've posted a pic of the back. There's a tiny sensor which looks like the NFC sensor to me.
The back cover however, is all plastic and there's no mark or anything like that on the plastic back.

That's not the NFC sensor

Ohh well. Then I'm afraid the Indian version too doesn't have NFC.

Is not having NFC a big issue? Would those NFC stickers be inferior in any way?
BTW just to confirm, are there any other known differences in the version being sold in India (I9100) and elsewhere(I9101 and I9103 etc)? I am planning to get it here in India.
This thread and other websites seem to suggest NFC chip is the only difference:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103256
BTW does anyone here have any feedback on the Indian mobile retail chain Univercell, they seem to have a pretty reasonable price (if along with a crappy website).

This is how NFC is embedded in Nexus S,
Does your SGS2 posses anything similar on the back cover?
P.S.
To read more about NFC and how it is attached in Nexus S & how it works, heres an article that might help you,

NO LED Flash confirmed !!!

Hi, Guys
I know this is sad news ... but you can find plenty of photos here and you got everything you want except LED flash.

Is it right too call pictures for a confirmation? I still have a small bit of hope... =). Mabye they have hidden it really good =)....or some other strange explanation =).
Galaxy S don´t have LED flash, you are dreamers guys
There's no mention of any flash control on the camera menus. Strange how so many firms are not only advertising it as having flash, but confirming it when quizzed on the matter.
But anyway, who cares, that screen is just gorgeous in that review above!

It would be a huge if the European version includes led flash. Nevertheless I never use the flash for photos, and this screen should be enough to be used as a flash light
I suggest you take a look at the model that was lunched in Singapure - it looks slightly different than the one that is in https://galaxys.samsungmobile.com see if you can spot the differences
I'm just concerned about the future firmware updates from Samsung. It may take a long time until we get froyo. Anyway, the most important update is Flash10 - so I could watch movies (i.e. megavideo) and some live TV stations.

No need to suggest nCoder, I submitted two photo's on a different topic showing both backs of the camera.
One has the speaker grill with two grills running horizontal whilst the other has three grills running vertical.

Have you ever seen a Senior Surgeon at 57 years of age cry......
Ok... perhaps a stupid idea, but:
So some stores state that the Galaxy S has flash.
I want to believe they're right, so, I order it and if it doesn't have LED Flash, I ask for a full refund - probably they'll prefer negotiating a discount than having to pay back for a returned (opened) item and restocking - At that time I may reconsider keeping it....
I repeat old this sites have bad old info!
Galaxy S dooesn´t have LED flash
Take it easy. We understand your point. (We also don't believe it has)
Have you seen the final version of this phone?
See any diference?
I Love it
Doesn't it look even better than previous pictures with that metallic border?
I LOVE IT!!! with or without led flash!
I got an email from handtec verifying that they 'can confirm it has LED flash'
Might ask for a freebie.

Optional NFC ?

Today I met samsung representative in CPW, who told me that there's no NFC option for galaxy note but it may differ in other countries.
That would alright if it wasn't for engadget article, which clearly states that there's NFC controller inside (NFC controller: NXP PN544).
Does anyone have an idea if it would be possible to use NFC technology if the controller is already inside the device(assuming we'll get ICS)?
I have seen on engadget too.. I think gnote has nfc support maybe with updating ics
That engadget found nfc informations in the firmware does not mean the chip actually is inside the device. Could be available just in another regio...
Engadget just reported what Supercurio mentioned. May be the phone Supercurio got is not UK version. (donno which country he is from)

Supercurio does not have the phone.
Currently there is only one version of phone in the market. European version
If the Note does have an NFC chip, wouldn't it be listed in the spec sheet of the user manual? Can someone verify this?
Forget it guys, the EU note don't have nfc, its is only for the korean market, same as LTE
Yep, samsung stripping nfc from another device because " the market in europe isn't ready for nfc". I'm pretty sure the market would grow considerably if you started putting NFC on your devices since most people will go for a 20 month + contract...
No NFC here either even for the prototypes on display (which didn't have the S-Pen even though its listed on the spec sheet.
Pict: http://img585.imageshack.us/img585/4489/samsunggalaxynote.jpg
I have NFC what use that technology will be until there are a lot more devices out there that support it.
NFC Is probably in the battery, if you check the t-mobile sgs2 t989 you can see what i mean! So its just a battery change, and you'll probably have nfc!

"There’s also NFC support too. We have the strange suspicion that the NFC chip might be integrated into the battery as it carries the NFC sign.
Samsung Galaxy S II T-Mobile
The NFC chip might be hiding inside the battery
Unlike the rest of the Galaxy S II lineup, the NFC on the T-Mobile version is fully functional right out of the box. There is a pre-installed app, called Tags, which utilizes it."

NFC is greatly catching up in India. There are article coming in newspapers here where various uses of nfc tech are being discussed plus there are various TV ads coming on tv about nokia phones where they show content sharing via nfc. tag line is tap and share. I just dont know what is wrong with samsung they are not able to add a simple piece of tech in their devices not even as large as gnote.

Looks like we will need to see if there are 4 battery pins on the device. It *could* be for something else, but I doubt it.

There are only three pins on my Euro battery and only three pins on the Note that match up with it.
I think it short sighted of Samsung if customers in Europe cannot upgrade the Note to enable NFC if they want to.

It's slightly painful to think that this tech might come handy next year and we won't be able to use it with £600 price tag phone.

With Galaxy Nexus you can now easily share contacts, websites, apps, maps, directions and YouTube videos to other people close by. Simply hold two NFC enabled Android phones close to each other and touch to beam and share.

Just an example of NFC usage introduced with ICS. It will be the trend set by Google. I wish such an expensive Note will include all the features.

" Does anyone have an idea if it would be possible to use NFC technology if the controller is already inside the device(assuming we'll get ICS)? "
We need 3 things; 1e hardware, this controller and an antena, (secure element not embedded in this controller but only important for payments, and can be added with SIM- or microSD- card.
2e software, ICS not essential, Android 2.3.? supports NFC, just not with Beam app out of the box.
3e business decisions, especially the carrier!

Need assistence : fake or not ?

Hi everyone,
I am in the opportunity to swap my S4 with a Note 3, but the person claims this Note 3 is from Korea.
I am wondering if it's fake or not.
Screenshot he sent me : https://app.box.com/s/enjy529pg077nemwyc5j
It looks real, but I never heared about a Korean version (however Samsung is Korean, so it could very well be a normal version)
Can you guys tell if this is the real deal ?

Why would he want to swap (no offense) it unless something extra is in for him? It's like going from a super top of the range car to a phone that was top of the range 12 months ago...
Surely in Korea he (in a gadget filled world) be able to supply a picture of his phone in action, e.g. with him holding it and with a piece of paper with his email address and yours written on?

Sometimes people buy something and regret it within a few days.
And then they are looking for something simular, but smaller in size.
I have swapped phones many times and always had a very good deal out of it.
However one should always be very aware of fake (Chinese clones) phones.
And since the Chinese are getting better and better in cloning, it's sometimes really hard to see the difference.
I believe I have found the answer in the meantime myself : http://www.needrom.com/mobile/hdc-gt-n9000/
It's indeed a fake.....HDC GT-N9000 with a MTK6589 chipset
Let this post be a lesson to anyone who will get in the same position
Thats fake. The color is off and the battery percentage is a bit smaller than the original.
Also, I would want to see how cpu Z would read the specs of the device, and how it is going to perform under benchmarks.

The other hint should have been the size of the screenshot provided - the clones are not (yet) 1920x1080.
Also, the Samsung dialer codes don't work on the clones. That's a sure way to tell.
In the Play Store an app can be downloaded, called "Genuine Galaxy S4/Note3"

Yup, Anything can be cloned to look the part, heck even the software clone itself is close enough until closer inspection. - Golden rule I guess in buying a second hand model.
Make sure you give it a really good test run, test the apps, have a look at the battery and insides to make sure that it says SAMSUNG (A few have SUMSANG believe it or not!) - As mentioned elsewhere, a genuine seller will have no objections to you looking over it. Oh and never ever buy blind - if you ain't seen it or felt it in your hand, it ain't worth the risk of a scam.
And real samsung Note3 is start with SM-N code not GT-N9000 like shown in your system info screenshot...

The one with the Samsung logo isn't the official Note 3 either. Could be a prerelease or whatever, but that is not what it should look like.
Update: when taking a closer look, I actually think it is the first of the Note series. All proportions, the speaker mesh and sensors seems to match that look.
Ya haha the top sensors are wrong, the bottoms too wide and button is too rectangular

I think it's neat.
there is only one way to do the things right and have peace of mind, get your phones from carriers or authorized dealers, always the real thing, an always covered by warranty, in irder to save money, many get their phones anywhere, literally on the streets sometimes, but, at what cost later?, I have seen many post like, my home button is loose, have a smear on screen, the colors are horrible, the powee button doesnt work, the screen has a gap, etc, etc, all those problems get solved by warranty, that is why you pay the full price, peace of mind

Just checking in. A D858HK user here.
For anyone else wanting to put a quick circle case for their Dual-LTE G3, please take note that the contact points of the D858HK do not align with the wireless charging contact points of the cover. The wireless charging contact points of the single sim variants are on the upper right part on the back, while the contact points of the dual sim iteration are slightly lower and on the left. Plus, the Quick Circle Case for the simple sim units do not close flush onto the dual sim versions.
The question is when we will get lollipop

Correct.
You can purchase the 858HK edition's quick circle case, which has different alignments for the NFC, as pictured here:
Can you please provide a link? I've searched everywhere but didn't find one so far!
TIA

Don't really have a website for it - I bought it at a local mobile store in Hong Kong
Is there any custom rom for D858HK ?
looks like there is a working twrp img for 858hk
Too bad i am not allowed to post link here
Checking in: I just received my 858HK last week.
The device is perfect, its specification along with the dual SIM was so attractive that I couldn't resist upgrading my HTC one m7 to it. Upgrading from the m7 stupid ultra-pixel camera was really huge
After one week of usage I can tell I am happy with my decision.
The only drawback I noticed is that the model we have is also affected by the screen sharpness isssue of other models mentioned here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-g3/general/hilariously-stupid-sharpness-fix-t2874587
http://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-g3/orig-development/fix-stock-kernel-oversharpening-fix-t2951620
I compared the screen with my friend's 855, and the issue is not present in his device. He is on stock rom
I hope our model gets more support on the forum!

I've just bought this case in HK, so is this one good for wireless charging too?? Any Qi charger will work?
I thought the contact points were only for the flip cover to display the clock

I've also tried... Don't think it actually works (My colleague has the official LG Wireless Charging Dock with official cable and adapter, it works for the D855 but not on D858HK).
Nonetheless, it's not recommended to use the wireless charger as it seem to be buggy (hardware?) you can google the issue and read up a bit about user woes...
Are we ever gonna get root support for this phone?
or is the big wait just for lollipop and hope for that be rooted one day?
Slow?

Try flicking over from Dalvik to ART runtime!!!!
She's a screaming beast now.........
(p.s. nothing has broken, yet)......
:silly:
I'm on art as well and finally this is what a top phone is supposed to be. I just want to get it rooted now but unfortunately I'm on 10f.

Yes, I just bought one yesterday and found that it's 10f already and cannot root! =(
I heard that downgrading back to 10d can root, but I don't know how to do this downgrade.
Can anyone advise? Thanks a lot.
Checking in
Dear All,
I just want to check in.
I bought the D858HK yesterday as an upgrade from D805, which I loved, but i needed a dual sim. I choose the HK version because it was a lot cheaper in Hungary.
I am on v10f unfortunately so stump is not working. I am willing to root as soon as a solution pops up.
I am glad that we at least have this forum with you guys.
I am not worried about wireless charging as it is slow and risky be my opinion as well. I hate flip covers so the only issue is rooting and being able to use exposed. I hope we will get a solution or guide soon, It would be a great Christmas gift
Happy holidays to you all!
Kind Regards,
Endre

LG G4 UK review

I got the LG G4 trough the insiders campaign in UK
Actually I own a Nexus 5, while in the past I had an S2 and a Note 2.
Nexus 5 is a quite good phone but battery life also with custom kernel is limited to its the battery size. Moreover when I bought my Nexus 5 I was coming from a Note 2, so I started to miss a bigger screen and for sure a better camera that is the weaker point of Nexus 5.
Battery
Let’s start from what everyone take care and want to now when they have to buy a new smartphone: “The battery life”.
So, taking into account that the battery life of a smartphone really depends on the usage pattern of every single user, apps and mobile reception of where we live, after 5 day of usage I can say that with my pattern of usage (see below) I am constantly getting between 4 and 5 hours of SOT.
Pattern of usage: 2 mails in push (one for work where I usually receive many mails by day), mixed use wifi/data, no push notification for facebook, chatting, browising, watching few videos, and reading mostly all the time. Some camera shots when I am with friends. Brightness always in automatic mode.
Camera
There are already too many example and comparisons on youtube. I can only confirm that the camera great one of the best for now. I have a DSLR camera and like to take my time when I have to take a picture of a landscape. So I really appreciated the manual mode and how it is good and simple the interface of the new camera app. Everything can be settled with few taps. Although a smartphone probably will never substitute a DSLR camera, with that toy on G4 you can have fun for sure.
Display
Also here, already many review and comparisons with the S6 amoled. Without judging which is better because I do not own an S6, what I can tell for sure is that it is really good. Colors are never saturated and brightness is fine in the majority of the situations. What I found really improved is the antiglare, the reflection of the sun seems to me pretty good, while a negative impression is that the display seems to be really power hungry as soon as you increase the brightness.
Reception and Calls
Reception is basically the same of my nexus 5 (pretty good) while I found the calls really clear on the LG G4 and better than my nexus 5.
Speakers
Good and really loud… was unexpected!
Missing Features out of the box
Two missing feature out of the box are the wireless charging and the quick charging. While the quick charging is officially supported by the SD808 and we only have to wait for a kernel update to have it enabled, the big disappoint is the wireless charge. Big disappoint because it is not officially supported on the leather cover but only buying a circle cover. After all the advertising on that cover by LG I can not understand why to enable a common feature of any actual flagship we have to change cover (or via an unofficial way, like a sticker to add to the cover).
Overall and final considerations
This phone is satisfying me under the majority of aspect that I want from a phone, like the battery life, the camera, the display and the quality of calls. I think this phone has a huge potential that can be improved with a good custom kernel and a lighter custom rom (even if I have to say that I found the stock rom really fluid and without any lag). With a custom kernel we will probably gain an other hour of SOT.
Me as well ! did you do it with insiders ?

I got an email yesterday to say that I didn't get picked.
I'm in as well, with the insiders too. One disappointment is I thought we would get the phone before launch, it doesn't look that way anymore. I wonder if they will send out a random selection of colours or just the black.
I didn't get in. Looks like I'll have to buy one in Black Leather next week instead [emoji14]

Yep mee too .. From the mail seems that the device will arrive for the end of this week
I didn't get in, keen to hear what you guys think before ordering one
I'm in too! Devices are arriving tomorrow so we should be one week ahead of launch
I have been selected too for the UK campaign!! Tomorrow UPS is delivering the G4
I think at the end of the program we will be offered to keep the phone for £250, this is the money that they would take in case of loss lol
I'm pretty sure it is going to be the UK/EU model.
I'm just wondering if we will be getting the LTE of the WiFi only model from what I've seen that's the one the testers are getting overseas
And me mine due tomorrow as well
Has anyone figured out whether it will be metal or leather yet
Also I'm quite intrigued by the tone infinum headset that we are getting aswell

Would be a wounder if it was a Wifi model lol.

I just think it would be strange that the rest of the world gets the wifi model and the people in the UK the full one but then again the other people didn't have to leave a safety bond
That's very true, but I'm sure it said somewhere that rrp 500 that wouldn't be a dummy phone.
But on the other hand, why would the payment only be 250 if you didn't return it when the phone is around 599 gbp and the headphones are 80

Hahah well.. I suppose we will find out tomorrow.
I'm gonna be at work until 6pm so I'll be checking here for an update lol
Hey!
Does your G4 have 4G?! The one I got doesn't support it.
Mine too will arrive tomorrow ... it sound strange that the UK model is the only one not wifi, but it is also true that we were probably the only ones we had to provide the bank account to have it .. let's see tomorrow what we will get
