EDGE and HSPA work, no 3G? - HD2 Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting and Genera

Was just wondering if the problem had to do with my phone, or just the service. I rarely ever get 3G, I pretty much always get either EDGE or HSPA (in the corner it either shows E or H). Is this just a problem with the 3G available in my area?

Isn't HSPA 3g?

the H is the HSDPA if i remember right. since the HD2 isnt a 4G phone it will have a speed boost from normal 3G but wont hit full 4G. Some builds I have used just dont ever show the 3G. For instance the Glacier aka MyTouch 4G ROM never shows 3G and always has the H which actually is 3G. Im sure there are Sense Roms out there that will show you 3G but if you have the H you shouldnt worry .. Hope this helps

Ohh, okay. Sorry guys I'm new to most of this. I thought there were three symbols I should be seeing : E, 3G, and H. Had no idea there was only E and H. Thanks everybody.

what they are saying isa that H is faster than 3g and better

1g =gprs
2g = edge
3g = umts
3.5g = hspa/hsdpa
3.6g = wimax
4g = lte

[Q] MMS on Froyo 2.2 && H instead of 3G

The MMS on the froyo build 2.2 build that i have Doesnt work at all. I've tried all APN's that have been given. Instead of 3G by the signal bars I get an H.
Any suggestions on fixing the MMS and the Data Connection signal from H to 3G?
Any other builds I could use that fix this?
what are you complaining about?!?! H is better than 3g its tmobiles new hspd mobile network as good as 4g...
Hah, I wasnt sure at all. Thanks Though?
yea you should want the "H" instead of the "3G" it connects to tmobiles new HSPA 4g like speeds....i ran a speedtest the download speeds arent that fast either on 3g or the H. when running android.

its HSPA+ 21mbps.. also backward compatible with HSDPA 7.2mbps.
where can i find Froyo 2.2
where can I find the link to download?
Hmm, It toggles from H to 3g so on and so forth.
so am i getting the HSDPA or what ever or not?
a H work beter than 3g

[Q] Just some simple question

What does the G, H stands for on the top?
And previously it shows 3G and it'll change to H whenever i uses internet but nowadays it always stay at G no matter im using internet or not
Its laggy when im trying to scroll/browse messages, is it just me?

Maybe im wrong but i think H is for hspa, it is faster than G but slower than 3G, perhaps you have a cheaper data plan like me You can change in network settings which one want to use, at stock settings it choose automatically, where H available (for example underground you surely can only use G, but when you download data, you cannot use your phone, it uses the same network at many operators)
Sent from my HTC Wildfire using XDA App
Really? H is actually faster than 3G, cause im pretty sure H is 3.5G, well it seems faster than 3G for me anyway lol. Ummm i think you're only getting G due to low/crap signal and reception etc etc or due to your provider's coverage.
The settings have WCDMA only , GSM only , GSM/WCDMA auto. Which are you guys one?
I notice i change to WCDMA, it changed to H already
H stands for high speed data packet access (HSDPA). G stands for 3G. E stands for EDGE. H is faster than G and G is faster than E.
Sent from my HTC Wildfire using XDA App
Oh, Thanks people How about the laggy issue?
H (GASPS) is fastest, then 3G, followed by E (2.5G) lastly G the slowest.

Leave it on gsm/wcdma Auto or you will not be able to get a signal in rural areas. The G stands for GPRS, which runs at dial up speeds, the e is for edge which runs at 100kb, the 3G is for 3G (utms) and runs at about 6-800kb and the h Is the fastest the wildfire gets at 1mb on average
And h stands for high speed data packet access

It will rather go for a weak wcdma (3G and hsdpa) signal than a strong gsm (GPRS and edge) signal if you leave it on auto

HSDPA is technically 3G.
It will only flip for custom ROMs. The stock ROM will say 3G on both UMTS and HSDPA.
NS does not have the hardware capability to operate on HSPA+. H in network is HSDPA, little snip from my other post.
MrHKM said:
HSDPA and HSPA+ is not the same. As HSDPA (high speed downlink packet access) is considered 3.5G by today's standard and is capable of 7-14Mbps using UMTS. Where HSPA+ (high speed packet access) is 21-42Mbps and sadly due to FFC changing standards its now considered 4G.

Now back when 4G wasn't used so freely H was fine for HSDPA but now since we have HSPA+ only way you can actually know it if you looking directly at the mobile network type. So from H itself you won't actually know if you are using HSPA+ or HSPA only way is if you install widget that display network detail on panel.

How do I know if I'm in H+?

I have my phone with gingerblur and it only shows H. My gf's is stock and afaik only shows H+.
Is there a way I can find out which mode I'm in?
I looked in settings > status and there it's just HSDPA usually and says 3G
Thanks!

According to Jessica Wilson (952.703.4316) at Atts Office of the Pres, the H+ icon indicates you are on a 3G capable network. I know thats not helpful, but thats Atts answer to your question.
The Atrix SW only uses one icon for 3G connection, no matter whether it's 3G or HSPA. In stock, that's H+, in GingerBlur it's H. I set it to 3G on my modified GingerBlur. Cheating? Maybe.
You can do an H+ icon and push it into GingerBlur's framework-res.apk and replace it on your phone, if you really must have the +.
I got to ask, at my work place I don't get 3g but usually edge but once I got gingerblur at home I get (H) and when I go to work I get (E) and sometimes (G). I would think (E) stands for edge but what is (G) if (H) is for 3g? Thanks

E = Edge or 2.5G

you won't be truly HSPA+ (H+) until enhanced backhaul has been installed at cell sites in your area.
check the coverage map:
http://www.att.com/network/
click coverage at the bottom and run your cursor over the map of the US. Cities that have had some enhanced backhaul installed will show up as you mouse over them.

Any 3G connection - normal (UMTS), HSPA or HSPA+, is displayed as:
- H+ in stock
- H in GingerBlur
G is GPRS and E is Edge. For some reason, I don't get Edge here in Singapore. Maybe they don't have it. Or maybe the Atrix doesn't distinguish between G and E anymore in 1.8.3... Or maybe Atrix is incompatible with Edge here. No idea.
I think the classifications of the different connection speeds in Android are a bit dumb.
My Nokia N900 displays, 2G for GPRS, 2.5G for Edge, 3G for UTMS, 3.5G for HSPA (Obviously if it supported HSPA/LTE/WiMax etc, it would display 4G lol) and that makes logical sense to me.
Its really weird, my phone shows that my network is on hspa when I force it to wcdma only. I'm on Fido and they share rogers towers and their hsdpa? Random... I am however getting about 5 down and 1.5 up which is fast enough for me really.

Go to your dialer and enter *#*#4636#*#*
Then go to Phone information, you should see your Network type there.
I've only seen two network icons in the stock status bar, E and H+ -- but H+ has been used while I'm on HSDPA and HSPA and even UMTS, so it's ultra unreliable, and I've never even seen HSPA+!
And an FYI:
No matter what the 4G coverage areas on the maps and what the mobile network company reps say, there are no true 4G networks in existence today, at least none that honor the original requirements for 4G.
Basically what occurred was that the ITU came up with a standard called 4G, companies falsely marketed 3G technologies as 4G, ITU gave up on the 4G standard, told the mobile network companies that they can keep the now meaningless term, and the ITU then made the IMT-Advanced standard which is what 4G should have been all along. IMT-Advanced solutions are in development, and not yet public.

Well, HSPA is just an upgrade to WCDMA = UMTS. So I am not surprised. I do not think you can force your phone to NOT use HSPA but remain on 3G.
If you want 2G only... that is GSM I think.

Atrix Signal: cell data/3G/H+

iv owned my atrix for around a year now and iv always had a small problem but just brushed it off my shoulder asif its how the phone should be, although this may be on my carriers side of things.
Im in the uk and i get signal from T-mobile and Orange as there the same company and share satellites but iv always noticed my phone signal status is really missleading, this is how it goes
normal full bars
full bars with 3G next to them
full bars with H next to them
when on the normal full bars i can barely make a call or send a text, after a few retrys it eventually gets there but otherwise says there is no network, so why is it saying i have normal cell data?
then when im on 3G which is supposed to be a half decent data transfer rate, i can call and text perfectly fine but if i try to open a webpage or facebook/twitter, it takes a painfully long time asif to say the 3G is actually cell data or something, its that slow i give up if i see 3G on my phone that means to me that its unusable for anything other than calls and texts...
then theres H+ which is lightning fast.... calls and texts once again are perfect, and when i load a webpage or facebook its faster than my wifi at home... the problem is i rarely even get this H signal unless im around a built up area like a city centre...
what im trying to get at is that although my phone is labellingg the signal as certain things it seems to be getting mixed up?
normal bars fells like it should be "no signal"
3G feels like it should be "normal cell signal"
and H feels like it should be "3G"
im not sure if i get 4G over here in england aswell before anyone asks but my H is alot faster than the 3G on my friends iphones, my friend who also has a sony xperia S also has this same confusing problem..
iv always just wondered why they seem to be labelled wrong, or is 3G just awfully slow and cant handle todays smartphones data?
any answers and discussion would be helpfull.. thanks
Hi, can I just clarify with you which device you have?
Do you have an Atrix 4G from AT&T or do you have an Atrix from Orange/Tmobile/Simfree?
First of all, you should not get confused with the term 4G.
AT&T use the term 4G incorrectly. Their network is HSPA+, which they call 4G.
In the UK, all of the networks are now also using HSPA+.
Another point, if you have a EUROPE model Atrix (Not Atrix 4G) you have more 3G frequencies available to you i.e 900mhz (disabled on Atrix 4G).
You should also be getting the following symbols on your phone (check to see if you have disabled 2G)
G, E, 3G, H (or H+, I have the sim free, it has H instead of H+)
Let me just term everything for you simply:
GSM aka 2G, normally all calls go on this when enabled:
G = GPRS. About 32kbps
E = EDGE. In theory 236kbps but never seen this speed.
UMTS aka 3G
3G = 384kbps theoretical maximum
HSDPA/HSUPA/HSPA/HSPA+ aka 3.5/3.75G
HSDPA/HSUPA or HSPA as its also known = Max theoretical speed 14.4mbps
HSPA+ = The upgraded version of HSPA, also described by the USA as 4G. Theoretical maximum 42mbps (which uk networks are supposed to be rolling out at the moment)

ISDN would actually be 2x dialup aka about 112kbps so a bit slower than that. Just fyi.

Go to System Settings, About, Status and look at Mobile Network Type. HSPA:10 is the fastest the Atrix supports and is not Evolved HSPA (H+). I was thinking the same as you on this until I researched. My only wish is the we had an indication of all the different HSDPA speeds in the status bar without having to look at the mobile network type. Remember, your provider you not support HSPA:10.
Take a look at the following If you want to read up a little bit: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1912716
