you know what i hate? - G2 and Desire Z General

that when my screen is closed and the keyboard is hidden, where ever i touch on the screen the screen and the entire top part of the phone moves when i touch the screen. its like my screen isnt tight. im not talking about the hindge opening, because obvioulsy what horse has been beaten to a pulp, but the screen itself. i apologize for the rant, but i just want to see if anyone else has the hate as well. only thing wrong with the phone!

I do not have this problem. You probably have a defective unit.

your screen isnt loose just a tad? i might just be over thinking it. i mean i just can feel the the screen just move a little when i type on it.

I too have never had this issue...you should take a look into that.

Just pushed on my screen MUCH harder than I would in normal use and it didn't so much as budge. Think you might have a bad device.

Yep me too,.... My hinge is definitely loose but there is no movement whatsoever when the device is shut.
Warranty!!!

Mine does that too. My wife's does not and my original one which I warrenteed already didn't either. But my replacement does.
The plastic casing must be slightly warped enough to misalign the little bumpers.
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App

Yea I have this to, really annoying. I had one of those clip on cases on my phone for a while , it might have been that which made it loose.

It depends on which way you are holding it when you push on it, if you hold it perpendicular for example it has this issue.
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App

Mine will rock sideways if you try (and if you're tapping around on screen you MIGHT feel the gap on the left side change), it's not all that much though - and the 3 G2s I've used were all like that.

yeah, thats what i mean. like the way the hinge was made, it doesnt quite sit the phone flat on the keyboard piece. im glad i see other peoples g2s have it as well and im not the only one. its mainly when the phone is in portrait and the top left part of the screen is touch it rocks just a tad.

My condolences to all who have these petty little problems..and i mean that..no sarcasm at all here...
Even with that...and the ballyhooed hinge hysteria...

Sarcasm noted...
For a phone with such great build quality/feel, something like the OP's problem (and mine) is fairly annoying. This feels like an executive class phone...for the first few weeks. It is a sweet phone/device. Too bad it's not perfect like my Vibrant, errr Nexus S, err.... Still waiting for the "perfect" phone.

lol
I was hanging out on Slickdeals and saw all the G2 love (yes, people really loved getting their phone free on cyber monday).. then a thread came up for the HTC shift.. and all the sprint guys were bashing it.
It's the same damn phone.
Still makes me laugh.

Best phone I have ever owned without a doubt, not a huge fan of the Z hinge but without it the keyboard wouldn't be so flush and ergonomic, its a small price to pay for superior user-friendliness
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App

I have to agree with all the DZ/G2 love here. It's a fantastic phone. Aside from VERY minor issues with the hinge tightness (though, there seems to be some 'hardware hackers' working on that! , this phone is as close to perfect as I can imagine. I *love* having a hardware keyboard, and it's waaay better than the G1. (Though a ctrl/alt key would be nice for ssh sessions!).

Video of Spring Loaded Style G2 Hinge ....

I was in Wal-Mart today and decided to check out the G2 on display .
I started playing with the hinge and it felt like it was definitely spring
loaded or tension loaded in some way . It felt great while playing with
it and the hinge design had a very positive "snap" opening and closing
into place . Even when shook upside down the screen absolutely would
not come down . It actually took quite a bit of effort to open and close.
So I asked the rep behind the counter to see a brand new G2 to see if
it had the same design , but to no avail it did not . The brand new G2
right out of the box felt like my G2 that I own . The display model weight
was right on to the actual phone weight . It had a real camera eye and LED
flash , trackpad was like a real G2 , etc . so the weight of the screen was
almost on par with a real device . There definitely was not enough weight
differences between the decoy and real device to make this drastic differences
between the hinges . Thoughts ?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7DTZ6ecBItE
That's not even a real phone! You're a real bright one.
If you werent a ****ing retard maybe you would read THE WEIGHT DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE PHONES WERE THE SAME !!!!!
Stores never use real phones as dummy units. If the phone was live that would be a different story.
It doesnt matter if the phone was live or not . The hinge doesnt know if its
a decoy or not . The weight of the screen and phone itself was extremely
comparable . If they weigh that close to each other then why does it act that
way ? There was a major difference between the two to just write off .
From the video the G2 looks incredibly plasticy and light weight. It just looks off to me.
It was the exact replica with working parts . I was kinda thrown off to be honest . Its
the only decoy phone Ive ever seen that wasnt "fake" . All the buttons pressed down
and wasnt plasticy by any means .
I absolutely would not pass that off. Dummies are simply the advertised phone with the internals and screen removed and compensated for. I played with the dummy G2 at Radioshack, and it felt just like the one I had returned (for various reasons) just before; the hinge was fairly loose and the weight felt proper.
Here's hoping that it's a sign of the future. Maybe late production units were changed? If not, I can always dream...

if the heavy screen were removed and replaced with cheap plastic then there is no way the screen section of the phone could be as heavy as the screen part of a real G2. The screen section of the real G2 is quite heavy
The REAL phone I messed with a local TMO store worked exactly like the video.
The hinge is in fact spring loaded and those that have gimped hinges with screens that fall are defects.
Call Tmobile and tell them the issue your having with your phone. They will send you another phone.

From reading that article it sounds like the laptop hinges were falling apart. Of course that's a problem that needs to be acknowledged.
The G2's hinges are not stiff enough for what some people want to do with their phone, but they are stiff enough to meet the design goals of HTC. That's not a manufacturing defect, that's a difference of opinion over the usefulness of the design tradeoffs.
Gosh darn it, my phone isn't nearly stiff enough to smash open a concrete wall. What the heck were they thinking? Yes, I know that is an extreme example, but somewhere between "stand upright with the phone facing upwards, flip open the keyboard and type" and "smash it into the cinder blocks until they are a pile of dust" lies the set of activities that HTC intended the phone to be used for.
Not everyone texts in bed on their backs, or wants to use a hip holster with the phone (and have the phone in the holster with the volume keys facing up so that the screen flips downward as one walks). Even on the rare occasion that I do hold the phone above my head, I don't find the floppiness of the screen to be that much of a stumbling block - I just use the sides of my index fingers to grip the display, or I use the onscreen keyboard when I need to type something...

I must agree with that. Nothing's wrong with my hinges. If you hold it upside down by the bottom, guess what? The screen falls down! Oh noes! That might be happening BECAUSE IT'S A HINGE. HINGES ARE SUPPOSED TO MOVE.

Atrix Build Quality

Hi All,
With the Atrix due to hit the UK soonish, I have a question about the build quality.
Now we all know Motorola make solid phones. Top quality build quality.
However...
Numerous reviews highlight the fact that for such a 'high end' phone, the all-body-plasticy-feeling just doesn't cut it. Other reviews suggest it is 'hardened plastic' and that it's not really an issue.
So what do you guys think? Has anyone dropped their Atrix? How did it survive?
Are cracks on the plastic body common?
For comparison, I currently use a HTC Legend, which is a 'one piece' body cut from a single block of aluminium, it's solid as a rock and awesome. I'm wondering how the Atrix would compare...
definitely not comparable to the phone you're using. while i dont mind the plastic back, it is a bit flimsy. however, motorola has released "rugged" battery covers which replace the stock battery cover and also cover the sides of the phone like a case as well, and it is harder thicker plastic with a rubberized outside. i'll be picking one of these up soon hopefully and when i do, i'll post something here.
The Battery cover is pathetic, an the mechanism to open too.
Sorry for my pathetic english.

The build quality is good IMO. It's definitely not rugged though. The main thing about the battery cover is that it's slippery. I almost lost grip several times just removing the Atrix from my pocket (yes hands are clean). An Incipio case fixes that problem .
http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias=aps&field-keywords=rugged+atrix&x=0&y=0
and this place has the green one (as well as the blue and pink)
http://www.redtagcellular.com/produ...ard-Rubberized-Battery-Door-Cover,-Green.html
they end up costing about the same after shipping.
the stock battery cover really isn't that bad, definitely not a deal breaker
I have no problem with the plastic feel at all, but the lock button drives me nuts!
First of all it's too recessed, and second plenty of times when I press the unlock button phone still doesn't register.
I finally got tired and installed "No lock" just so I can unlock my phone by using the volume rockers.
IMO this is the worse lock button/switch I've ever seen on a phone which is a shame because I love the rest of it.
I'm also guessing that I'm the only one that has a problem with the lock switch since I haven't seen anyone else here really talk about it...
To me the phone is inbetween solid as a rock and satisfactory. Its heavier than most phones Ive used which makes it feel solid. But when you remove the battery cover it makes the phone feel cheap but that is done to get the phone as slim as possible.
The gorilla glass seems to be a lot stronger than what was used on the iphone 4 and doesnt scratch easily. Ive dropped my phone multiple times in its Commuter case and never had an issue. But never have I tested that without a case. IMO every smartphone should be wrapped in a case.

would rather not have a broken phone just due to dropping it. think of shelling the $30 or so for a good case as a one-payment insurance policy.

Build quality is solid and good for a plastic device. The plastic is hard and doesn't creak, though the back is somewhat flimsy. You have to lower your expectations if you're coming from an all metal device though. This obviously can't compare physically to something that's made from machined aluminium or something.
i didnt like using it until i retrained my print by swiping up instead of down, like the tutorial shows.
HTC will always have topnotch build quality....Atrix is very solid for a plastic backing. Its more solid than the Cappy
Sent from my SGH-I897 using XDA App
I use a cheap $4 TPU case from eBay and that makes the phone 10X better, IMO. The phone gets bulkier (of course), but it's def worth it.
As an added bonus, it makes swiping my fingerprint easier.
EDIT: Exactly what I use: http://cgi.ebay.com/TPU-Gel-SOFT-CA...815105?pt=PDA_Accessories&hash=item19c4325441
$2.75 for making my phone feel awesome. BTW, no, I don't sell that case. Search ebay for "Atrix TPU" and find one you like.

I actually really like the design of the battery cover. It's extremely quick to remove if needed, and the same for putting it back on. Does allow for dust to get in more easily, but also a snap to clean out if needed.
Feels just like my iPhone 3GS did for form factor, but I would say the iPhone was a wee bit more slippery due to the high gloss case finish.
Overall design and build quality are fine imo.
Many thanks for the comments thus far

Thing is, in the Android world, HTC has gained a decent reputation for build quality. But overall, (including pre-Android days) Motorola really were (are?) kings of the build quality game. Hence why comments around build quality are somewhat surprising.
It seems like most of you have cases then? I absolutely hate having a case for any phone I own, it takes away from the design lines of the phone, no to mention the weight, size, aesthetics, etc.
Maybe the question should be: do you feel the build quality is at such a poor level that you feel you *need* a case - because so many of you seem to have one!!

nah your not the only one. this was one of the main reasons why i sold the phone. hitting the home button required too much effort because it was so recessed.
I am coming from a Nexus One and was a little skeptical of the build quality of the Atrix. I went ahead and got the Atrix on release date, have never put a case on it, and really do like the build of it. The back cover wraps around all the corners of the phone and covers the whole back, so if you where to scratch it up you can just replace it and it will be good as new.

Anyone else not been able to use this phone because of its ergonomics

I had a GS II but had to get rid of it because it caused me so much hand pain. I should declare that I do have existing problems with my hands but the Arc doesn't really cause me any problems. I think it was a combination of its width and the squareness of the design that did for me. I have tried out the Sensation and though that is only a bit narrower it seemed much easier on my hands, I reckon because it's a more rounded design.
I thought it was a good device but I am not going to keep using a phone that caused me that much constant pain.
First one i have come across though as it is larger i did recommend a young lady to hold it before buying .http://media.xda-developers.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif

It is a good device, just not for you. If you knew you had problems with your hand you should have spent more time with the phone before you bought it. It's like buying a car you never sat in and complaining about the driving position.

For me the phone is too slim and slippery, but silicone cover did the trick and it steadily fits my hand no problem.

So have I. Which makes me think it's more the design than the size. The Arc isn't that much smaller but is narrower and a much better thought out ergonomic design IMO.

Hehe I'm not saying that there's something wrong with the phone, but I can't reach the top left side of the screen one handed and barely reach the middle left side. That being said I wouldn't change that beautiful big screen for anything, so I can live with.

It's a fraction too wide for me, but I can live with it just. I've suffered from a bit of RSI in the past so I can imagine how it might hurt if you have similar issues (carpal tunnel etc).
The SE Arc next to this feels much nicer in the hand as it's about 5-8mm narrower - yet still sports a 4.2" display. Maybe that would suit better.

Build Quality Questions..

Hi everyone, I very recently purchased my brand new Desire Z. So far, I am really impressed with the software and general likability of the phone.
Although, having read too much about the Z hinge, it really makes me paranoid sometimes while handling the phone.
A few obervations and questions, which if someone with a few months of experience could respond to would put me at ease,
1. The Z hinge is surely loose, but doesn't worry me in general use. Although, I am scared it will get further loose with time, is that so?
2. The cable / ribbon running along with the hinge is not protected, is the wear and tear comparitively higher because of having no protection? Should I be budgeting in changing the ribbon every couple months?
3. Because of the hinge being loose and possiblity of the keyboard opening on a fall seems almost definite. Doesn't that put much more at stake on a fall comparitively? Fortuunately, mine hasn't fallen yet, but what's the experience you all have had with your devices falling on hard surfaces? Other than the scratches, that's not a problem. I am worried, the device will break in pieces if it falls!
4. For a little more peace of mind, are the hinges metal or plastic? I have read both on reviews and I can't seem to find a definitive answer to this one.
Thank you for taking out the time to read and respond with your experiences.

I've had mine since January and I've dropped it plenty of times. I have never had any problems with the keyboard, hinge, or ribbon cable.
After dropping my phone a few times my phone speaker went down... Had to replace them

So it does seem like it is a sturdy device, or at least as sturdy as the other devices.
Any idea about the hinges, if its plastic or metal?
Thanks!

Fairly certain they're metal. I've dropped my caseless G2 several times but it's only dinged with no other damage.

+1, I dont get it, lot of discussion on this, but never I never had any problem with the hinge...
I know, lots of discussions on the hinge, but I guess its the placebo based on the early hands on the device. Although, I am getting much much more comfortable and relaxed about it.
In a nutshell, its a great device. Thanks everyone for endorsing it for me!

The G2/Desire-Z is one of the most rugged phones ever made, the only knock is that some people find that the hinge spring action gets loose (mine never has) - but if yours ever does, and you are comfortable taking your phone apart, you can replace the stock hinge spring in about 30 minutes, start to finish. - The part costs about $5 - Then it will be tight as hell like when new! (possibly tighter than new)
There is a great thread on this here on XDA complete with an HD video showing you an exact POV of the procedure being done in it's entirety!
The phone is quite sturdy overall. I had a stone thrown at my screen and no change whatsover.

First half fall and its scratchless
Why I call it a half fall is, it didn't fall but it it lost my hand and hung from the charger and hit the side of the bed pretty harshly. The keyboard did open up though but luckily all's good - gave me a little more confidence on the device build.

Dropped mine a few times - the battery cover always seems to fall off when that happens. Few dents and scratches but nothing serious.
As for my opinion about build quality, personally I think it's pretty crap, due to the design of the hinge. I changed my first DZ for another, since the first one had a ridiculously loose hinge. The second one developed the same problem in 24hrs. It's not that that bothered me so much, but the fact the two halves were not held snug together by the spring, so touching or pressing on the touchscreen caused the top half of the phone to tap annoyingly on the bottom half.
Eventually I bodged this by sticking layers of electrical tape between the two halves. It's not visible in normal use, but I'm pretty annoyed that I had to do this to my (then brand new) phone. Good job nothing better with a keyboard has come out yet, cos if I tried to sell this thing then I'd get literally nothing for it.
The lacquer on my battery door started falling off after a couple of weeks. My physical camera button only works intermittently, but I won't send it away for repair because I don't know what software it will come back with - it's over a year since I rooted this thing, and I don't feel like researching the latest methods, or finding out that HTC have closed all current ways to root.
This phone does not have good build quality, in my opinion.

A better hinge would have surely made the phone much more sturdy. That's what has always scared me so far, but now that the phone is 2 months old now I have started to get more comfortable around it.
Milestone 3 or MyTouch Slide could be good contenders, I think.

Don't get me wrong, there is no other phone I'd rather have at this moment in time - but that's due to a lack of qwerty phones on the market, as opposed to the DZ/G2 being some sort of amazing quality :-/
The Droid 4 looks proper nice though, hopefully it'll get released worldwide. And Motorola won't lock it down like they have with every other phone they've released since the OG Droid... but the chances of that are basically zero.

I totally hear you there.
So, all the current Motorola droids are locked and can't be upgraded to cm or other custom roms? Really!!

I have been VERY careless of my phone, dropped it probably close to 100 times some of them being quite bad, and the most I can see is a couple corners have SMALL little dents, often the keyboard does open when dropped but nothing happens after that... I'd be more worried if dropped WHILE open but chances are if the keyboard is open you're typing (and therefore have two hands on it) My spring is still as sturdy as when I first got it as far as I can tell.

Lol and that's why I got the slide, I hate the hinge with a passion. I luckily got the slide and gave the G2 to my mom. The slide has an awesome build quality dispite the not so appealing look the quality is great.
I have dropped the G2 a couple of times but it had the rubber case on so nothing happen to it. Haven't dropped my slide so I can't compare

I had this since summer 2011. I did get a case (stays attached to the phone) for this phone and found the hinge very weak, it will slide out if I held it in at an angle. Then recently I removed the case and there was no problems with the hinge since, able to hold it at many angles without worrying it slip out.
Having put my phone with keys.etc all in one pocket I found there are scratches on the back of the case. I have dropped my phone a few times but no problems.
Ribbon is good, the hinges I believe is metal (perhaps, alloy or some sort).
I wouldn't worry about the hinge too much unless you plan to keep using the same phone for more than 3 years. HTC does also have a global 2 year guarantee (from day of purchase).
