[Q] What is a cheap good media phone? - EVO 4G General

I am building a bluetooth stereo cooler to take on river floats. I have an Upstage but I think it will be a pain to use, and I surely won't take my Evo on the river. Here is some of the criteria I am looking for...
Easy to access buttons for pause and next song(I will be using random most of the time).
Long battery life, at least 8 hours of music playback. The Guadalupe river has terrible Sprint service so an AT&T phone would be preferable(I hope it doesn't need to be activated?).
Cheap... I am hoping to be able to buy one cheap from Ebay and/or Craigslist for between 20-40 bucks. Being used on the river I doubt it will live very long.
Non-proprietary charging cable. Not a deal breaker but I do have tons of mini and micro USB cables.
Any input would be greatly appreciated. Most online reviews have little to no information about media playing capabilities. I have been looking at the Samsung A777, but I am not a fan of Samsungs phones.
Thanks,
ST

I agree, but he is wanting to use bluetooth. Most cheap MP3's do not have bluetooth capabilities as far as I know. I know ipod touch 3g/4g do, but those aren't within his price range.

Get an old mogul, or other windows mobile phone. I'm sure they can be had for cheap, and should do what you want.

That is exactly what I want, but there is a limited line-up of mp3 players that don't use itunes and have bluetooth. Used cell phones are on Ebay by the thousands and much cheaper than dedicated mp3 players. I don't need anything fancy and I assumed some people on here would have had an old phone they used to use, liked and would recommend.
As far as being the wrong forum... what would you suggest? I am pretty sure I posted in the "general discussion" area.
Thanks for looking anyhow,

This is the Evo general discussion forum, for general discussions about the Evo 4G. There is an Off-Topic forum, that is for just about anything else.

I have looked into a couple of older HTC models, but I really only need it to play music and not be pissed if I drop it in water. It just seems that a smartphone would use more battery power than necessary to get the job done.
Thanks

I used my mogul, and treo 700wx to listen to MP3s for hours. I always charged up the phone at night, but never had battery issues from listening to music on the phone. I rarely used bluetooth, however, so I don't know the impact to the battery.

Another one bites the dust!
Head over to BBHybrids.net the xda-developers for the BlackBerry world. I'm currently running a BlackBerry 9630 Tour with software upgraded to OS 5.0.0.230/50v7.15 Irtehun hybrid. It runs head and shoulders above the 4.7 image the phone came with.
I originally came to this site so I could learn how to mod my HTC Titan (PPC 6800). I'm now back because I picked up an HTC Dream (Google G1) and want to learn more about Android.
Theres no touch screen on that small thing
This is like driving a car to using a motorcycle
Bad analogy. Have you ever taken a motorcycle for a spin? If it didnt snow here 6 months out of the year, I'd trade my car in for a motorcycle instantly. Motorcycles are fun as hell and the gas mileage is 3x better than any car on the road.

I might be leaving as well to iPhone 3Gs 32 gig.. say what you all want lol. (I will probably get flamed.) But my goal is to jail break it and run android on it. :]
You can flash roms on your BB just as easy, if not easier, as flashing on your g1. Give it a few weeks you be getting flash happy again.

Idea to honour the N1, the King of phones.

I was just thinking, in two or three years when we've all moved on from our N1s, we could band together and stick them together into a giant android sculpture, or a transformer
#random
Crazy idea buddy but good idea to honor the n1, the best bravest and most innovative phone ever but the worst treated by the media, utterly assassinated.
Maybe a site which each person with an n1 IMEI rate their n1 online on a 1 to 5 scale - and get a virtual n1 to build a sculpture with, and a place to write comments on their virtual n1.
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA App
Or maybe make a chat app like chatroulette that uses the device numbers as registration so its n1 users only then create a meetup.

I wonder how long it will be until Google has a manufacturer produce another developer phone?
The Nexus one is the most perfect phone for me and I cant see anything but another developer phone replacing it. It's beautiful, cutting edge, gets updates quicker, is with T-mobile, and is not under carrier control.
What more could you want?
I only know two other people who have nexii one. And they both bought one because they saw how awesome mine was.
Im sure we could get google to organise something like this, an N1 graveyard of kings.
I wonder how well it would've sold if it had been available in stores.
Now that Google have announced they have the final batch of N1s from HTC, I went and ordered another one! I'm going to leave it in mint condition.
I have had range of different cell phones since 1993 and none come close to the N1.
I know that the future will bring much better phones, however, I do recognise what Google was trying to achieve with the N1.

I unlocked it, rooted it, upgraded his radio and kernel (OC, UV - and he was still running 2.1 update 1. Working for Tmo you'd think he'd get the upgrades first xD) And after that, I gave him CM6, cause that was pretty much the easiest way to get all of the GOOD mods in one. I gave him ADW using the paperless theme, and he thought that was way cool, along with the black desire notification bar. It probably took me, including download times, about 25 minutes using his laptop. So, if I could do this for a living, I could charge $120 an hour =D

The International version (Samsung Galaxy S) and Sprint Epic 4G has front cameras. The Captivate and Vibrant does not.
I honestly don't get all the hype about front cameras. Why? What's the point?
It's new, untouched technology. Just because Apple marketed it doesn't make it a good idea.
Give it a year. I'm sure the "Galaxy S 2" will have one. Doubt it'll be a standard by then anyways though.
I don't know about you guys but I'd prefer to not have people staring at me while I tell them lies over the phone. Its just unethical!

Yeah, that's what I used to think until...
I have an iPhone 4 and an i9000 (both have front cameras). I was testing both phones at the same time. I was going to return the iPhone in my first 30 days because iOS4 just isn't up to Android standards in my book. I also have a Nexus One on T-Mo that I mostly use as a WiFi hotspot.
I'd played with FaceTime once with my only other friend to have an iPhone 4. He lives in Florida, I'm in California and we wanted to check it out. No big deal on the first test.
One day I was driving to work and got the clever idea to connect the iPhone to the WiFi hotspot on the Nexus One. I then called my friend in Florida with FaceTime on the iPhone 4 and it worked just great over 3G. (You can also jailbreak the iPhone and use 3G Unrestrictor to just do it directly over the phone).
I had the iPhone 4 in a dash mounted holder and it was so cool. My friend's face was there on the dash and we were like in the car together. I still focused on the road, of course, but I could glance and see his face like you would with someone in the car with you when appropriate.
At one point he even asked where I was and I just switched the camera from front to back with the onscreen button and he then saw out the road as if he were riding in the car with me. Then I switched back.
We both really thought the experience enhanced the quality of our conversation. I decided to keep the iPhone just because of that.
So, yes, it's a new idea, and not a lot of phones have it, but even though Apple's ahead of the curve on that one, once more phones make it that simple to be face to face when you want to, it's going to change everything.
Nothing wrong with wanting a front camera in my opinion; those who do just are a bit more visionary than those who don't care about it yet.

lol! nice.
Btw, I don't really have any feelings about the need for a front-facing camera, but that anecdote about doing an iPhone "video-conference" on the road via N1 WiFi is pretty cool. That' be a great thing to do while traveling.
Great, texting while driving is bad enough, now having a video chat while driving, please God tell me you don't live anywhere near me.

Its not that new. I remember there was hard advertising in 2003 in UK when carrier 3 got the 3g. Apple is always "revolutionizing" technologies that already existed for a while.
For front camera would be great for occasional video over ip calls, such as skype, or what fring did before.

Its not new technology. Hell, landline phones had video capabilities 10+ years ago, it never took off because its a gimmic. Facetime is a gimmic. Sure its nice but you will use it a couple of times for the "cool factor" then it will wear off, just like the Wii did with so many people.

You hit the nail on the head androidmonkey. I don't think it will last long. Very gimmicky. Now when data speeds catch up that might be a different story.
For example, when phones began including really cheap-ass cameras I thought what a stupid idea. And still did until this last year or so when the quality finally caught up.
The hilarious thing to me is that King Steve in his ivory tower piously looks down upon the masses content that he is keeping them safe from porn not realizing that the#1 use of his new phone is probably NOT facetime but *****time... lol

Androidmonkey is correct. Video calling has been around for years. Japan (and I believe Europe) has been doing this way before iPhone4. Just because Apple says its revolutionary or magical doesn't mean they did it first. Apple is full of ****. Their marketing team is great at making people into believing what they say. People need to open their eyes. Apple-lovers = lemmings, automatons, etc. And another thing, Facetime over wi-fi is nothing more than video chat like on your pc. Good grief.
What are you guys talking about... I use video calling on my vibrant all of the time. you can clearly see a camera to the left of the speaker

I was over at my Mom's the other night and was talking to her husband about my phone (He's an apple fanboy). I think I convinced him that the Iphone was a piece of $4!t.

While yes, it's a video of the Desire HD.... it's pretty much the same phone as the EVO but with all the crazy new sense features that are ALSO coming to the EVO. That video blew me away. Some of those features are priceless.

Some of those features towards the end like phone lock or the htc sense.com integration with the texting redirect and call redirect is amazing...how do you know its coming to the Evo?

I came from an iphone 3GS. Believe me I was a huge iphone fan until my eyes saw widgets. That did it for me plus the big screen

I came over from a 3GS as well, and I might not have, if it wasn't for the iOS4 update. My 3GS was jailbroken, and set up really well, but I'm a big cycling fan (loved seeing HTC-Columbia featured in that Desire video, even if I did have to watch that tool Cavendish win...like I don't have to see that enough already), and the Tour de France app was crashing on 3.1.1, so I had to "upgrade". Even after jailbreaking iOS4, it was just never the same. Except for the camera and display, my 3GS would have handed the new iPhone its ass, in terms of functionality.
That said, I'm a longtime linux geek, and I did want an android phone, plus the school I go to, their website is in flash, and I do homework through it sometimes...very doable on the Evo, impossible on the iPhone.
Oh, and now I get through phone conversations without losing the call.
Did u also show him your bad battery performance, Weak 4g coverage inside buildings, or crappy market? The envo is great, but all phones have problems, people need to stop tryingn to convince other people and just enjoy their phones.

Welcome to technology.

Sony Ericsson LiveView Watch for $25 [with shipping]!

If you don't know what this thing is, a short summary is basically:
The LiveView is a watch that gets information from your phone and displays them on its screen when you're either 1. Too lazy 2. Too busy
to pull our your phone.
I KNOW that this watch has its bluetooth problems and is very irritating at times
(I own one myself)
But I think $25 at least warrants a look in its direction.

ya never really bought from sites like these they always look kinda fake to me, but this seems like a cool little gadget
read a few reviews on them and none of them were good lol. all of them said it only lasted a few hours.
Yeah, it's not super practical, but it's a fun little device that at least gets some conversations started. (and a little nerd cred)

site is fine, I'd rather buy an old ipod nano with watch belt, then just sync it to phone with bluetooth, seems like this is what it does to me :S
I know reading texts are just superfluous, but can an ipod nano sync texts and emails?
Honest question, cause if it could, I'd seriously consider getting one

this gadget is only $25, it was too hard to pass up. Plus, I'm trying to stay away from having to use iTunes for anything except fix my cousin's family iphones & ipod touches.
Choked that I missed out on this!
with the help of some apps this liddo thing can be pretty awesome
glad I got it in time though I think shipping will prob take forever on that site lol
