GPS problem solved! - Desire HD General

GPS problem solved!
Have had huge problems with my GPS and sought advice both here and other forums.
EVERYTHING has been tried, all possible combinations of room's, radios, and ril'files, fasterfix, gps status, fastreboot, delete cache Dalvik etc. I can not count all the times I've gone out on the porch and pointed my HD to the sky with new hope but no result. The best I have achieved is fix during the 5-10 minutes with an accuracy of about 140m .....
Then I found this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7qm_z65LA8k
Thank you knglaser
It seems that the GPS antenna sits in the flash cover!
I tried to press the flashcover and it worked just like an on and off switch for the GPS, satelites just fell in and in a matter of seconds I had the fix of 10 satellites This with an accuracy of 5-6m.
Picked out the blitz cover and "adjusted" the contacts between the cover and the phone and put it back in place, it took about 2 minutes.
After this operation GPS works perfectly
I am now happy since this has been incredibly annoying, I use GPS to both training and in the car and have not been to happy to send the phone back to repair since this usally takes long time.
Hope this can help others who are struggling with the same problem?

Thank you for this. At first i dismissed this as my gps problems only started immediately after the ota gb upgrade installed - it was then taking over 4 minutes to get a fix. However in desperation i took phone out of case - simply pressed the cover in the place shown in video (didn't even have to remove) and hey presto now get fix in seconds. Put phone back in case and all is still well.
Simple but yet very effective - thank you.
Not sure why the upgrade should have triggered this problem though?

Sadly, pushing the cover down is not working for me. Thanks for the video though. I will have to get some tools and pop the cover off to see if it looks like my contacts are no good as well.

apparently i solved my gps problem but not like above. i tried but didnt worked. So i install the new version of gps test, go to settings and then i push clear AGPS from top.then update agps.restart application and seems to work now. I will see. Pls tell me if you try like me and what is your experience
update: unfortunately the problem come back again...

Any more who has tried if this helps? I'm about to tonight

Try this file, it work perfectly on my device,
also i have attached a restore, in case you dont like the fix.
EDIT: Flash in Recovery

Thanks! what does the patch do?

X1 - GPS does not work anymore

Hi all,
since today all of my gps-programs (smartrunner, terracrosser, on the road panel) i´m normally using (at last yesterday) do not find a gps-siganl anymore.
I´ve tried htc gps-tool, but it is saying "failed to send NMEA command"
In settings the internal gps is set to com4, harware (external) no com, managed by windows.
Any ideas, or is there a program to check if the gps-chip is generally ok?
Thanks and all the best.
Coincidentally, about 5 days ago I found that my GPS on my R1A ROM stopped functioning after exactly 2 minutes. Tomtom and all other GPS apps would get a fix normally, then crash the phone after 2 mins (Tomtom goes gray) and a soft-reset is needed to get the phone going again. I tried reinstalling most of the apps, but nothing seemed to help.
In the end, I took the gutsy way out, flashed my X1 to R3A (even though there's rumours that it's not the 'official' release), and everything has been good ever since.
I know it's not really a 'solution', but I sure as hell couldn't find the fix. I've had my Xperia since the November release with R1A, and it just did this to me about a week ago.
Anyways, happy with R3A having skipped R2A. Not HUGE benefits to upgrading, but definitely some positives.
Hi Scar,
flashing to R3A means that all programs and data will be deleted?
Isn´t there a way to reinstall the gps-driver, like at "big windows"?
How did you flashed? With SE Update Service?
I am a X1 User for about 7 weeks, so i do not had such issues until now and flashing would be my first time.
Any other ideas around?
Thanks and all the best
Hi mrx_bln,
Flashing to R3A will mean that your device data will be lost. If you use ActiveSync, then all of your Contacts/Appts/Tasks/etc. will get re-synced when you re-create the partnership after flashing. You also might want to search the forums for "PIM Backup" which will allow you to set a "Custom" backup to grab your files, as well as its ability to save Call Logs + SMS.
I flashed my ROM by using the microSD method, which is to place the (official) ROM in the root of the Storage Card, and have it named "kovsimg.nbh". You'll find more info from Jack Leung in the ROMs section of the Xperia X1 forum here.
As far as I know, there is no way to reinstall the GPS driver. If you have never got a signal though, and your symptoms aren't like mine were (I got a fix for 2 mins then it always froze after that), then you might want to leave it outside for 10 minutes to ensure that the GPS isn't working. Also, run QuickGPS to make sure you've got the latest data file.
Hopefully you can figure it out, as flashing is a bit of a pain to have to reinstall and reconfigure everything. The silver lining to that dark cloud is that you can ensure that the device is running mint.
Let us all know how you make out!
If your GPS crashes satnav apps after a couple of minutes, try deleting your 'extra.bin' file.
This is the QuickGPS download file which is likely to be the culprit, and you can always download another which is likely to be okay.
Hi all,
thanks again for your suggestions.
I´ve run "configuration - system - delete memory" (in german: Einstellungen - System - Speicher löschen) from the phone, which is a "hardreset", i guess.
And look, after that my GPS is working again.
The HTC-GPS-Tool is working and my favourite apps (Smartrunner, Terracrosser) have GPS-Signal.
So, my result is that is was definitely a sw-problem and i am wondering that there is no fix for this, because regarding to some threads it looks like that happens quite often. I mean, even the developers of htc gps tool should have the knowledge to write a fix, don´t they?
May here is a wm crack who has a look at what a hardreset is doing with the gps and writes a little tool to fix this manually?
Many other users would appreciate a lot, i guess.
Let´s have a look when the problem comes up again
Even the quickgps tool came up with an error (something like "can´t connect - try later"). Then i will try to delete the "extra.bin"
All the best
My GPS hasn't been working for about 2 weeks now. Not about to hard-reset, but would love to find a simpler solution.
Try this solution. That worked for me and many others It is way simpler than a hardreset

I have exactly the same problem after every ROM flash.
And always manage to fix it in 4 steps:
1. Erase GPS data using the HTC tool, wait 30 secs, all satellites should vanish
2. Cold start the GPS, wait 30 secs
3. Power down the phone, power back up
4. Start the HTC GPS tool again and wait approximately 2 minutes for the gps to fix. If you screwed up steps 1-3 then after starting the tool you will get a pattern of satellites. The screen must be clear and it should start looking for satellite 02 (searching for almanac)
Never had to cold start the phone- I suppose it does exactly the same as my four steps.
I was working with various GPS units before and the Diamond one is definitively the most fiddly of them all.
I suppose there is a bug in the COM4 GPS communication protocol, I have noticed that the stream of data often cannot be stopped by closing the connection with the GPS inside the tool.

I thought QuickGPS came with the phone. Load up the program, then hit 'download' and soft-reset just in case.

GPS fix CM7 DHD

After endless searching for the gps solution i've found a solution.
I've tested it and can confirm it works.
All credits go to the developer of faster fix (Bernard Bekker)
So here are the steps:
1. Download the CM7 rom ( I'm currently running the built #15 nightly)
link:http://mirror.teamdouche.net/?device=ace
2. After installing the rom and gapps set it up as you normally would.
3. Download Fast Reboot from the market (and install it).
4. After installing the Fast Reboot, download Faster Fix from the market (and install it).
5. Now turn off the gps (not in the notification bar, but in settings).
menu/settings/location
6. Run Fast Reboot
7. Run Faster Fix, and select your country and hit Go
A pop up should say: for example "Done set to:nl.pool.ntp.org" as I live in the Netherlands.
8. Turn on your GPS and reboot.
Now when you use the Google Navigation you should have a fast and steady fix for your GPS.
This won't work if you turn off GPS and on again.
In this case you have to reboot your phone!!! Remember to turn on the GPS bevore you reboot your phone!
It is not nessesery to repeat steps 1 to 7, just 8.
Just tried this and got instant GPS lock when I walked outside of my office. THanks for posting this.
Seems to work. Thanks for the information.

Maybe I am doing something wrong but I just followed these instructions and when I rebooted the phone froze on the splash screen. Had to recover and flash my nand. Have you heard of this problem?
No, i never had this problem, mostly if you make a lot of changes, reboot in to recovery and flash a .zip and than reboot, you might end up with a bootloop in the splash screen.

Just to inform you guys, if you are using a gel case on your Desire HD, it's going to have a noticeable impact on the GPS lock time, from two minutes down to only several seconds.
I have confirmed this with my Case-Mate Gelli, and there is also a video by someone else on YouTube showing this.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bUyhxm2NtDU&feature=youtube_gdata_player
Faster Fix will still help with the lock time in both cases, so thanks to the original poster.
Unfortunately, it didn't work for me. I have an HTC Desire CDMA from USCC with CM7 RC4 running.
?permanent fix
It worked but is it a permanent fix or every time you want to you GPS do u have to turn it on then reboot to get it working again? Thanks
Evo4g / Sprint, worked pefect (saved me from a lot of reflashing)!
Tnx
I still find the GPS to be very poor on my DHD. updated the radio, applied this fix and it still takes a long time to lock, even when outside. Its almost as if agps isn't working at all.
Just a thing to test
Menu>settings>applications>development
Make sure "Allow mock locations" isn't checked
I suffered with terrible GPS reception for weeks until I noticed this was checked. Now I get on average 3-7 yards accuracy, fixing in about 3 seconds
Also didnt work for me. Have flashed a few different Radios and ROM's, does anyone know a highly recommended Radio for CM7 and gps? (preferably on UK Orange if that matters / makes a difference to gps).

also have you installed gps status from the market?

Worked well for me! Got an instant lock in my house after doing it. Used to take about 2 minutes outside. Cheers
Hello!
What is in the gapps file and how do you install them?
Is it possible to use them with another rom or is they locket to CM7HD?
For the moment I am on RCmixHD.

So we can use RIL on CM7?? Wasn't there some problems??

This thread clearly says in the OP "not for CM." I don't know anything about RIL so maybe it will work, I just don't want to see someone have issues.

After Flashing to Overcome 1.2.1....GPS is not working correctly.

Ever since I flashed to Overcome 1.2.1 the GPS has been VERY wonky and just plain WRONG. Maps says that I am in the next TOWN which is a good ways away.
GPS Locks are extremely few as well and takes forever to lock on to.
Can anyone else confirm this and or help?
Bumping this up.
When you flashed, did you wipe your cache? With a new rom it always takes a while to reaquire your location. I use the app HereIAm2 from the market to get that first position lock after a rom flash.
Yes I did wipe the caches. Will try that app out if it is free.
Thanks.
EDIT: Noticed that the compass seems to be very inaccurate as well. Weird.

Oh well, that's the least of my probs;-/
i have installed OC 1.2.1 and at one point the whole tab became very sluggish....and all sort of issues appeared such as slow browsing.......then the tab would simply freeze! Reboot did not help at all....
I have since installed OC 1.2.3 with the new kernel and it went ok-ish. But today after rebooting i have all sort of errors (broken messaging service, when i click on the wifi tab to switch on, it says 'error'.etc).
I wonder if others have this sort of probs. I cannot understand how it can work fine for a few hours and then.....kkkkkkkk.
I have the UK tab version with firmware JK5; Also cannot figure it out why it does not show 'overcome v1.2.3 on the build number...it still shows v1.2.1, kernel overcome 97.
I'll have to reflash the lot now.......how annoying.
I am sorry that you are having problems. However hijacking threads is frowned upon here.....
Welcome to the XDA Forums otherwise.

The app is free.
How many roms have you flashed? Maybe it's time to do a factory reset, then flash the full version of the rom/kernal.
Well it did the trick and put me in the correct spot but the compass is still completely wonky.
Oh and this is the first ROM I have flashed. Overcome 1.2.1.
There are apps in the market for that. You want to calibrate the compass, so look for a gps utility. Sorry I don't have one to recommend to you.
Not a problem. I appreciate your advice and welcome any others as well.
One thought about the compass - do you have your tab in a case with a magnetic clip?
Mine works fine out of the leather case, but not when it is in the case.
Just a thought.
No I don't.
To test the GPS to see if there was any interference I put my iPhone 4 into compass mode in maps and did the same with the Tab using the Maps program.
The iPhone 4 was spot on....however the Tab was wrong yet again.
So that means there is no interference.
I am stumped here....and the recalibrate apps did not work either.
Just thought I would try a catch-up.
Since my last comment I moved from Rotos JMIv2 to Overcome 1.2.3 and my GPS also stopped. After 24 hours however, I have got it going through a the use of GPS Status (free from the market) and the LbsTestMode which you can access either through a dialler code or through SGS Toolbox, also free from the market.
To cut the story short, I went from just finding about 3 satelites (with no connectoins), to finding and connecting 10 satelites.
I must say that I am very happy with the current ROM and with the GPS Status program.
Hope this helps if you are still having problems.
I believe that if you dont have wifi or 3g on the tab GPS will not work..

Yes - I've always had the wifi going, but found that unless I had a phone (modem flash) and inserted a sim card, I could never get GPS to do anything.

Droid X GPS Fix (for those who can't see any)

My GPS hasn't been working for a while now, and I always assumed it was a 1software issue. I've tried SBFing to .340, .602, CM7, and am currently on MIUI.. all with no luck. Long story short, it was a hardware issue.
I noticed while holding the phone in a certain way with the battery cover off, I would get a fix on all satellites almost instantly (using GPS Status). After some testing, I found that putting pressure on the piece of plastic between the battery pull tab and SD card was the solution.
With a little MacGyver ingenuity (folded a movie stub in half, placed on that spot, and put the cover back on), I now have perfect GPS reception, indoors and out.
I'm not sure if this is the issue for everyone with a Droid X and GPS problems, but it should at the very least help some.
Please take the poll and spread the word if this is a solution for you. I know I'm not the only one who has thought about tossing my phone out the window over this issue.
It works!
Wow. Just wow.
I have been having GPS problems on my Droid X for months now. I had tried almost everything: Formatting SD card, downloading AGPS data, wiping cache, factory reset, different ROMs, etc.
NOTHING WORKED
I was about to give up, but today I had some free time before work so I thought I would give it another, final, shot. I Googled the problem for the umpteenth time and found your post. "Interesting," I thought to myself, "I've never thought of trying that."
So I popped off my batter cover and with the GPS test app running applied a small amount of pressure on the little plastic peg located below the pull tab.
INSTANTLY GPS test picked up seven different satellites! I jumped out of my chair I was so excited! I instantly decided to create an XDA account (I've been a lurker for about a year now) just so that I could thank you! I loved using my GPS so much because I am horrible when driving in places that I'm not familiar with, it was such a downer to not be able to use it, I felt like my phone was only at 75% without it.
But you changed all of that!
I love you!
I want to hug you!
+1000 Internets/cookies/kudos to you, good sir!
May you have the best Karma for the rest of your life!
Sincerely,
An extremely happy, GPS renewed, Droid X user
interesting. I usually find that GPS problems are rom related 9 out of 10 times.
I like my GPS too I've always known my network and GPS issues to be rom related. I'll have to see how that works next time. Thanks for sharing your discovery.

I didn't believe it at first... but he's right!
I had my doubts when I read about the "pressure fix" to my DX GPS problem. I did a lot of testing and it works. I was able to get 8-9 satellite fixes in 4-8 seconds. As soon as I let off on the pressure all satellites were lost usually right away but sometimes I had the fix for 15-20 seconds. When I put the battery cover on I also lost satellites right away. I found I could also apply pressure through the battery cover and get a fix within 10 seconds.
I called VZW tech support and after I convinced the first tier script reader that I indeed had a problem that they couldn't fix I went to tier two. He asked a few questions and I told him my woes (but not the pressure fix) and he immediately sent out a replacement phone. The replacement works great... fixes in seconds even inside a steel hulled ferry boat!
Something else you can try is updating your roaming capabilities. dial *228 and press 2. Seemed to help a lot with me. Getting several satellites within 5-10 seconds, vs. 20 minutes before lol
If you are having the gps issue on all roms and pressure makes it work, it's more than likely a cold solder joint an I would get the phone replaced under warranty.
bizarre
I just wanted to say I have this same problem on the same phone. I noticed if I touch the back of my phone in a certain area, the GPS lights up and everything works great. If I take my finger off it, the GPS loses me. It is just bizarre... I am calling them tomorrow for a replacement phone but I wanted to say thanks for posting this because I thought I was going nuts!
edit: I cut off a strip of a thin cardboard price tag from a pair of jeans I bought a few weeks ago and inserted it into the back of the phone like the OP stated, closed the battery case, and now I have eleven satellites. If I take out the piece of cardboard they all go away. I had been looking for a solution for weeks and now, finally, joy!
Yeah I knew that issue for awhile. Atleast 7 or 8 months. It will help with wifi issues too. I remember at one point my friend was going threw droid x's like there nothing. There has to be something loose up there. I wanted to open it up and try to find a real fix but just never cared. I figured if i lose wifi or need gps i know the quick fix.
Thank you!!!
I started having gps issues right around the time I started rooting and roming so I assumed it was the roms. I tried flashing the fixes but nothing worked. I even temporarily went back to stock but it didn't fix the gps problem. I found this today and immediately fixed the problem. I used my gps the whole day and haven't had a problem. If something changes I will be sure to come back and let all of you know.
You know... it might be caused by doing multiple battery pulls which is something you tend to do a lot when first learning to rom your phone.
Me too
My wife and I both have DroidX original flavour, and both have had the GPS stop working after about a year. To call it annoying would be an understatement. Both phones are unrooted, have the latest update on them (4.5.621.MB810).
Our symptoms were they same - you start up GPS and start Navigator or Google Maps, and for the first two minutes, everything was fine. And then the GPS looses the signal and there is nothing you can do to bring it back.
I had read on another board that Weatherbug caused a lot of problems with the GPS, and after uninstalling that (and installing Weather.com's app), the GPS actually did start working better, but it would still loose the signal permanently most of the time.
I actually went through uninstalling everything else on my phone trying to figure out which of the 100 apps I have installed that had messed up the GPS, and still had no signal. And then I read this post.
I'm going to add another variable to this fix, and that would be heat. Taking off the batter cover works for me, but I have also noticed that on hot, sunny days, when the phone is in the car dock, there is almost nothing I can do to get the GPS to work. But at night, when the phone is cool, even without taking the cover off and applying pressure to the knob next to the pull tab, the GPS seems to work almost flawlessly.
I'm going to call Verizon tomorrow to see if I can get replacements for both my wife's and mine phone. I don't know if they will, considering my wife's phone is almost two years old, but we can't wait until July when her replacement discount becomes available for her to have a usable GPS. Considering this seems to be a design flaw in the original DroidX given the sheer number of postings all of the internet describing the exact same problem, I'm thinking they had better replace them for free.
Thank you for this post!! You've solved a problem that has been bugging us for months, and now that I know its an endemic problem, you probably saved us a LOT of money!
I know this is an old post, but I am looking for any suggestions to get my GPS working again. I have tried with the cover pulled and applying pressure to the plastic piece and have had no luck, I get no satellites. I have updated roaming capabilities, I have changes ROMS, still to no avail. I have used GPS Status to reset and download A-GPS state and it will not work. The GPS never finds any satellites indoors or out. I have tried flashing a baseband radio and had no luck doing that either.
Any other ideas would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Use faster fix to set your pool server, then use gps aids, clear agps in settings, then go outside with good signal, request update agps in settings, go back to main screen and wait for good fix, may take a minute or 2, after that you should subsequently get a fix in about 15 seconds

What firmware are you using?
Your phone must be properly rooted (ie. having Superuser and Busybox installed). Any rooted kernel will do the trick.
Then, being on GPS AIDS main screen, press the menu button on your SGS and select "Setup".
Thanks Slap, this is very helpful especially for JWx firmwares that do not include angryGPS anymore.

Try the fix for GB: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1750226
Hi,
My GPS is also not working. I did a very wide search about that isse and tried most of the things. But no luck. In previous stock roms, my GPS was working fine. But after switching to ICS, I couldn't get a fix. The interesting thing is when I tried to downgrade to GB, I still couldn't get a GPS fix. I'm totally confused about the problem.
Does anyone have any solution or idea?
Hi Guys, try to flash with different ROMs and see if the GPS works on other ROMs or not. Make sure the NTP server is having correct URL for your region. It is required for your phone to download LTO file, the same to XTRA server url.
For my case last time, it wont works on any ROMs I tried at all. And then I found out it is the GPS Antenna contact problem. I have fixed it by soldering trick (which voided my warranty that I am not really care after about 2 years of usage).
You can try to verify it by taking off the back cover, then use your finger to press on the upper part of the GPS antenna at the back of the phone. (the location is next to your speaker for I9000). IF it detects satellite when you pressing it, probably it is the hardware contact issue. Some of the owners fix that by putting a thick tape at the pressure point so that when they put back the back cover, it will give a pressure to make sure the antenna contact properly to the board pin.
Try search in xda regarding about the GPS hardware fix.
WARNING : Try it on your own risk. It is just my suggestion and you have rights not to try it. Good luck. :good:

Use faster fix to set your pool server, then use gps aids, clear agps in settings, then go outside with good signal, request update agps in settings, go back to main screen and wait for good fix, may take a minute or 2, after that you should subsequently get a fix in about 15 seconds

I tried that. And also I applied the GPS fix http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1750226.
It views GPS satellites, but none of them are in use. I'm posting screenshots. Can you take a look at these?

Good luck. :good:

First of all, thanks for your reply. I tried varios ROMs, none of them solved my GPS issue. But I'm pretty sure that I used GPS previously. There were no problems at the beginning. So I don't think that there is a hardware related problem. I noticed that problem after installing ICS (maybe it was before ICS, but I didn't notice it before).
Just to be sure, I also chekeched the GPS antenna (I found a guide about that). And it seems OK.
So I'm back to square one...
Note: It detects GPS satellites, but says that none of these satellites are in use. I also posted a screenshot in my previous reply.

try this one: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1043034
the issue is solved by applying a tape on the top egde of the gps antenna.works fine!
I tried, but applying pressure to that point changed nothing in my case.

for me it worked after applying a tape and putting the cover back on the phone,it also didnt't work when applying pressure with the fingers.I put the tape at the top and it worked immediately.
