Galaxy S2 Apps / Root Question - Galaxy S II General

Evening folks, im a regular on the HD2 forums ive had one now since last year and a great phone it is too and has served me well but i simply must have a Galaxy S2 and as soon as i have enough cash ill be buying one SIM free.
I have lots of apps on my rooted HD2, maybe 70% from the Android market and the rest are apk's i picked up here and other websites, am i correct in saying that i will need to have a rooted phone in order for these apps (the ones i didn't get from the market) work on my phone or can i just install them via root explorer?
Also is it easy enough to root the Galaxy S2, im not a noob when it comes to flashing ROM's,etc but im so used to the HD2 now it'll take some time getting used to the Galaxy S2 when i do get one.
Any info appreciated.
cheers

You should install the apk's without any problems. You can still install them if they require root, and your phone is not rooted.
Yes, it is very easy to root this awesome device

Thanks for that, i do plan on rooting it anyway when i get it which will hopefully in the next 3/4 weeks, gonna be sad selling my HD2 but more excited about getting this amazing phone.

Look forward to it. Most awesome phone ever! I honestly ever had a better device than this.

There's a setting in the SII which allows you to install apk's from unknown manufacturers. I've downloaded some .apk's myself and installed them without having to root or download an extra app.

I've been reading up on this but I'm still left wondering about something. This phone is not rooted yet but do I need root to put a new ROM on it?
What does root let me do that cupcake doesn't already provide?
yeppity
yes. unless it's an update from t-mobile, which rogers isn't... unless you're a lucky owner of a rogers g1 already... are you?
if so, then still yes XD

Among many others:
Tethering via WiFi or Bluetooth both require Root.
Terminal su permissions requires root.
Apps2SD requires root.
Ok cool. I'm hoping to see it get rooted soon so I can do some of that stuff. I'm not an owner quite yet but tomorrow I will be . I still can't seem to be able to find paid apps on the phone when I was playing around with his. Are paid apps not available in Canada or something? That doesn't make much sense to not allow this in Canada. Anyways..thanx for the info!

That is correct, paid apps are not available for Canadians yet. That is another advantage of being able to load on another rom.

New Xoom User

Hey, I just picked up my Xoom from Futureshop yesterday. I am in Canada and it is the WiFi only version.
I see there are many threads on Rooting and all that good stuff. My issue like always is there is too much information. I can never find what I want, or be 100% sure it's what I need.
So my first question is, is there a point to rooting the Xoom right now? Are there any useful and good ROMs for it yet? What other reason should I do it, I have rooted and installed ROMs on my Desire for ever now and the only benefit I see is the ROMs and a couple apps, yet I think I am missing a point lol
Second, for my North American (Canadian) WiFi only Xoom, which rooting steps and files do I need/follow? Thanks
Thirdly, excluding the Google applications and Games (because I already have them) what are some apps that support tablets currently? Also, what cool things are you doing with your Xoom?
Thanks.

This thread is definitely in the wrong section!
But I'll answer the first question:
The main reason I rooted was to overclock to 1.5 GHz. I also did it because I know that eventually I'll want to try out a custom ROM or run some other SU apps somewhere down the road. I also wanted USB host capabilities. As far as I know though, there aren't any custom ROMs yet, but there is a custom kernel, Tiamat. I haven't tried it yet, because I've been content with the stock OC kernel.
Oh crap, yea I didn't notice I was still in this section. Sorry, please move MOD.
Thanks for the reply. Overclocking eh? Will that destroy my CPU/device quicker or any other bad side effects?
And link to do that with my version?
Moved to general.
Generally, 1.5 GHz seems to be tolerated very well by the majority of XOOMs. If you notice random pauses, lockups, or restarts, tone it down a little bit.
You will likely notice a little additional battery drain, but as long as you're not on "performance" governor in SetCPU, you'll be fine for the most part.

Screenshot ER is a good reason Lets you take screenshots (no kidding!) without adb. I also have some other apps that need root like Root explorer.
EDIT: You might also want to ask: Why should I NOT root? Sometimes it helps to see both sides but I haven't found any disadvantage.
Ok, so I found this thread which seems to be my model.

One Click Root
The is pretty much the easies way to root your xoom. A one click method, and also unroot it back to stock if anything need to be done, like take it for repair to motorola or the upgrade for lite. It works for both wifi only and 3G. Just make sure you click the correct method for your kind of device.
There is also videos out there on youtube and google with it being done, that's how I got mine done. And more of a visual guy.
Here is the link from here on XDA, good luck. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1011196
Here is a link to the video I use, these guys have videos on both rooting and unrooting, enjoy fellow Xoom. http://theunlockr.com/2011/03/30/how-to-root-the-motorola-xoom-wifi-or-3g-one-click-method/
Well there we go! lol
Thanks a bunch.
I assume once I am rooted I just install that SetCPU app and play with it?
Best reason to root? Ad-blocking hosts file!
same thing here...wifi only in canada. I used one-click root ... click ok like 15 times and you're done!
one click rooting, nice! I'm new to all this rooting stuff........so that might just push me over the edge!
Other than ad blocking, not really. I haven't root'd mine.
Sent from my Captivate
Yea the part that gets me is the ability to unroot and put back to stock, just in case I need my warranty.
yeah the ability to unroot is the best thing since the xoom. Lol. Cuz you can always go back to original. Just a side note be very careful with that setCPU' it can be useful, and hurtful.the xoom is fast already, but. I mean as other have said, it is safe to an extend, but I would keep it that hight. One becauxe of battery life, and two because it could become an issue. I think if it was totally safe to clock that might, motorola would have been the one to do so, and would have put this device out the as having a 1.5Ghz processor. So just be careful, and as soon as you notice anything not right or normal, head for the door. Lol. (Go back to stock)
A-men.

I also bought my xoom at future shop. I used that link above to root my xoom and now im overclocking as well.
Do rooting enable the "Market Enabler" app?? and if the answer is yes, do this app fix the problem of the missing apps by hacking the market provider to [US] Verizon??????
It needs root and busybox. Basically, it lets you set your carrier to any carrier you like to fool the market.
It is often used by people who's countries don't provide market access.
Since I don't have a XOOM yet I can't vouch for its functionality on there but I don't see why it shouldn't work.

only 3g
I believe the above comment is correct. And as a side note I think the above app is only going to work with the 3G Xoom, not the Wifi only version. Because of the celluler radio. I have heard that both the wifi and 3g have a radio, because even the wifi version has a sim card slot, due to it being combine with the micro sd card. If this proof to be true, it could be a good deal for use with the wifi only. Cuz that means I pay $200 less. And if it is there, motorola will likely not make it active. But then once the codes are release, folk on XDA will make that dream a reality.
Don't count on that slot working on the wifi model. The important hardware like the radio will likely not he there.
The only reason the slot is there is because its combined with the SD slot and it would be costly and pointless for them to source an alternative socket just for the wifi model.

Mine is the verizon model and it is R800x
there are also R800a, R800i, R800at, and a few others I think, so if you could please provide us with some more information we would be happy to try and help you.

I think that version is Rooted, though I am not 100% cause all I ever look for are things for the R800x. Anyway Rooting the phone ends up giving you complete Super User access to the phone. The biggest advantages that you can get from rooting you phone is the ability to WiFi Tether from the phone without the Wireless Network knowing about it, the ability to delete bloatware off the phone and move apps to the SD card that were once not able to be transferred, as well as the ability to over clock your phones processor to make it faster. Also gain some other small abilities like the ability to Print Screen the phone.

Rooting gives you admins rights the same as you would get on a pc. Some apps need to have root access to work e.g. Titanium Backup, Ad free etc.

Well as JasonKnight has said you can remove unwanted system apps. Making the phone boot up faster and generally run smoother. You can also backup your apps and data with titanium backup. Install custom themes e.t.c.
The list goes on but the main reason people root is to uninstall/freeze crap that comes on the phone that you normally cannot remove without root access. Which then gains you more ram and internal memory .
See here for a guide on rooting your phone. If you plan on rooting at any point do it now, since it will wipe your phone clean.
See here for apps that are safe to remove after rooting.

Lol, Again the list is endless. For a start
Get yongzhs emulators from slideme here. They are still free atm. This will let you play thousands of old games with proper controls
Get AdFree Android it will remove adverts when browsing the net on your phone it also removes the ads in free games such as angry birds e.t.c. You need to be rooted to use this app.
Get another keyboard since the stock one is pants. I use Swype. Takes a bit of getting used too but once you do its awesome. If you dont like swyping it is alot better than the stock keyboard for just normal typing
Other than that just read around all the sections of this fourm and see what other people are doing.

If you just bought it, then it isn't rooted yet. You have to go through the steps to get root yourself. If you can follow directions, it shouldn't be a problem for you.

[Q] kindle for samsung app on galaxy note 4

hi all
for some strange reason when i first got this device i was able to go to the samsung app store and
download the kindle for samsung app. It was nice, it had multi window function and I was quite happy about that.
as on my note 8 i had to hack the darn thing to work with multi-window (tutorials are lovely things aren't they )
I had to do a factory reset on the thing and ever since then i'm not able to find that app anymore.
I finally stumbled on a thread in xda where some one posted the kindle for samsung app in an other thread for the S6 i think it was. I managed to grab it from there but this one has no multi window function.
I've busted my brains for three days now, message samsung twice with absolutely zero luck. they seem to selectively become unable to comprehend anything I say beyond a point. Tried all kinds of vpn ip re-routing and still can't get onto the samsung app store to get this friggin app.
so if anyone in here has it would you please.. please please pleaaaaaseeeee im begging you be so kind as to give me a dropbox link or something so i can pick this thing up and finally use kindle with multiwindow? please?
I'm seriously drained now looking around and looking for a way around samsungs nonsense (don't even get me started on the google play store -not available in your country blah blah) uuuuuhhhh
help... i give up please help.
What you get in the Samsung store is dependent on device description in the build.prop. perhaps check if a flash of some Rom changed it.
Hmm I'm not sure what you mean. I'm new-ish to android. If you mean about rooting and changing from the official samsung rom to an other then no, I've never done that.
the phone is new. It was initially turned on and setup in the USA that may be why, I dunno. Samsung said that the kindle for samsung app is simply not part of the store which services my location. They zoned my country out (for an ebook reader? Maybe it's for the book deals but I don't care for that)
If you meant something else , what should I be looking for in this file and what should it be?
I guess it's time to find some tutorials again. (Heck of a lot of trouble for just one app though this is getting crazy for one apk)
I'm sure if I can just get the apk I'd be good.
Thanks though.
yeah, that was what i was refering to. if you flash a new rom it might be that the description of your phone changes.
the only thing i could think of would be that your sim card changed the region your phone is accounted to and so you can't download it anymore. a possible way would be to reset your phone and startup without sim, connect to wifi and install it from samsungs store and after that you can insert the sim card again and continue the setup. i understand that this is not a convenient way, so you'd better just search for the apk.
samsung is restricting access, because it comes bundles with one year service 1 free book per month.
i just tried it and could download and install it from the galaxy apps store.
Lol would you believe all while I was doing this there was no sim card in the phone?
I was getting a feel for the phone and transferring contacts playing with it all before I put the sulim on. In fact, I only put the sim card in five minutes ago for the first time.
it has to be the book deals. I don't care about that, I don't want any novels.
Could u extract the apk with "es file explorer" and post a Dropbox link?
That would be awesome , that's all I'd need I'm sure of it. That particular apk
is no where to be found anywhere online
Here is a tutorial on how to do it

Also just heard from someone who said that if I ever did flash my phone with an other rom that the app wouldn't work anymore (at least that was his experience). I'm not really into that anyways. About the only thing I'd be interested in would be getting this SM-N910H to unlock LTS like the N190C I'm guessing it's just software lock out. I saw something in an other forum thread on here with people experimenting with it. I've not finished reading to the end of that thread yet. It did seem that was really no difference in these phones though. I dunno. Guess I'd better back up right quickly then haha.
What is LTS?
Oh that's 4G I believe that's what it's called
Oh it is called lte around here. I do not understand that you need to unlock it. It should be activated by default.

oh snap you're right I must have gotten the acronym mixed up with linux lts (long term support) you're correct its LTE.. but on my model it doesn't have it included.
the SM-910C and a few others have it mine is the SM-910H that doesn't have it by default but seems it might be a software lock-out. I'd love to have it though.
i did not see mentions of software locked LTE here yet.
i found this thread which claims (at the start at least) that your phone is a 3G version of the note 4.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/note-4/help/sm-n910h-3g-variant-t2925648
i did not read the whole thread, but if it really is not unlockable, perhaps you can exchange the phone with someone who does not need 4g and wants to have a little better battery life. in the end LTE modes were always known to drown your battery more quickly then 3g modems, i guess it is still like that.

Hey good looking out! Thanks.!!!
the truth is that I don't really need 4g at all.. I just like to have a complete device that's all. I don't use mobile data over here because it's terribly slow no matter what "g" they claim to have over here and I found it to expensive for what I get no to mention I'd likely only use it for text or whats app. I just stick with wifi. But I'll check out that article
and if it does indeed drain battery then there really isn't a compelling reason for getting it unless I was going to sell the phone to someone who would need data.
Hows that kindle app working out for you though?:good:

My Note 3 is slowing down is it time to ditch it?

Apologies about the noobie question, but it has been getting gradually slower and I am wondering if it is time to move forward to a refurbished Note 7 or 8 when it comes out, or is there a way of rescuing it?
Factory reset .
Reflash stock rom
Or flash a custom rom .
Depends on how long you want to drag it out. I told myself when getting the note 3 almost 4 years ago that I would run it for 2 years.
With the abundance of support from devs and 3rd party roms I have had it this long and only now am I starting to get a few annoyances with it. And that's only because I want to keep it up to date software wise - meaning running software that was never meant for it!
I will definitely be upgrading this year though, looks like it will be time for me to get the Note 8!
Thanks for your patience with a Noobie, my only concern with a custom rom would be getting my banking app to work is there anyway around it?

Depends if your banking app detects root (mine doesn't) but you can get around this with Magisk which would keep your root and bypass many root-detecting methods.
If you use an NFC-paying method however, it might not work. So yeah, re-search before you try to flash
One more thing. When updating to a Note 7 port, I couldn't download my bank's app anymore with Playstore normally. So I downloaded when I was still in stock, backed up with Titanium Backup, flashed the Note 7 port and restored the app. Works flawless, but yeah it's something to consider
