to better answer your question we need to know the exact model of the Xperia you have?
Mine is the verizon model and it is R800x
there are also R800a, R800i, R800at, and a few others I think, so if you could please provide us with some more information we would be happy to try and help you.

Mine is R800i X play !

I think that version is Rooted, though I am not 100% cause all I ever look for are things for the R800x. Anyway Rooting the phone ends up giving you complete Super User access to the phone. The biggest advantages that you can get from rooting you phone is the ability to WiFi Tether from the phone without the Wireless Network knowing about it, the ability to delete bloatware off the phone and move apps to the SD card that were once not able to be transferred, as well as the ability to over clock your phones processor to make it faster. Also gain some other small abilities like the ability to Print Screen the phone.

Rooting gives you admins rights the same as you would get on a pc. Some apps need to have root access to work e.g. Titanium Backup, Ad free etc.

Well as JasonKnight has said you can remove unwanted system apps. Making the phone boot up faster and generally run smoother. You can also backup your apps and data with titanium backup. Install custom themes e.t.c.
The list goes on but the main reason people root is to uninstall/freeze crap that comes on the phone that you normally cannot remove without root access. Which then gains you more ram and internal memory .
See here for a guide on rooting your phone. If you plan on rooting at any point do it now, since it will wipe your phone clean.
See here for apps that are safe to remove after rooting.

Lol, Again the list is endless. For a start
Get yongzhs emulators from slideme here. They are still free atm. This will let you play thousands of old games with proper controls
Get AdFree Android it will remove adverts when browsing the net on your phone it also removes the ads in free games such as angry birds e.t.c. You need to be rooted to use this app.
Get another keyboard since the stock one is pants. I use Swype. Takes a bit of getting used too but once you do its awesome. If you dont like swyping it is alot better than the stock keyboard for just normal typing
Other than that just read around all the sections of this fourm and see what other people are doing.

If you just bought it, then it isn't rooted yet. You have to go through the steps to get root yourself. If you can follow directions, it shouldn't be a problem for you.

Just got my G2 whowhoo!! What should i do?

what are apps i need and what does rooting do i was just reading that one click temp root
any advice thanks alot i am also new to rooting
Let me first say, CONGRATULATIONS!
At the beginning, forget rooting.
Here is what I did:
1. Mess with all Android settings.
2. Put tons of music, videos, photos, roms, etc, onto memory card.
3. Set ringtone, wallpaper, organize homescreen, and do "basic" customization.
4. Set up Google Voice(most people don't have this as a main step, but I do since I love this app )
5. Download must-have apps(for me gameboid is one), install, and set them up.
6. Sync all accounts, get contacts on the phone.
7. Disable things you will not use, such as the photobucket app.
8. Whatever you want, now you can root
While doing this, I would recommend running the battery from 100% to 0% and using a battery measuring app such as battery left inorder to "calibrate" your battery. Whether this is a myth or fact on whether it improves your battery life, since I see people arguing on this a lot, it can't hurt to do it.
He pretty much covered it.
Just enjoy the phone and have fun with it bro.

you might also want to get an invisible shield or a case of some sort to protect the phone as well
If you don't like bloatware, take a look at this thread.
Honestly, doing temp root on the G2 is absurdly easy with the VISIONary app (mentioned in that thread).
so what exactly is the point of a ROOT what will i be able to do other than overclock?

I had no success with both z4root and superoneclick (both exploits). My guess is that the exploits are fixed in this version of Android.
Gingerbread can be the problem with this apps.
We have to wait a little bit more.

I really really hope so. This device will be 'made or broken' by the community
whats the whole point of rooting as it is aside from stopping some of the pre-installed stuff?
At the moment, that's pretty much the whole point - just to kick some of the pre-installed junk off the device. Altho in time, it could also lead to some other things, like extended menus, options, themes and the like.
However, these things might or might not require an unlocked bootloader to function as well.
With the boot loader unlocked however, you can basically replace the whole System. Even going so far as to install a completely new System like Cyanogenmod, Meego, MIUI and so on.
i guess getting rid of timescape would be useful. any news on the NA version being stock android?
"Timescape" in this case is pretty much only the launcher. Everything else is very much stock. So I don't think we really need to get rid of it. I'd just like to kick some stuff from the internal memory to make space for other things. I for example don't need Fifa or Sims. I never play those games.
I would love to be able to stop all random **** from connecting to the internet. Also timescape and things like mediaserver and postcard i would like to get rid off. Clean install.

To get more control over your device, gain acces to hidden files, change boot anim etc (don't know the file structere of xperia play). Get adfree working so you'll get rid of the advertizing in apps and browser, screenshot apps etc. Push apk's to /system/apps with adb shell (some won't install with the native manager, but will this way (modded apk's)). Overclock without flashing (did this to begin with on my DHD before i got the bootloader unlucked and installed a recovery, so i could flash a new kernel with oc options).
Lots of reasons mate

[Q] My Xperience with PLay

Ok guys. Just got my Xperia Play 2 days ago. Mastered the iphone os and want to explore the android os. So far my main question is what is rooting and why I should root my phone, what benefits I will have for doing this. On the iphone for example i had free games that usually you have to pay for (don't mind paying) and themes.
I'm looking for users opinions not links on some google searches. that i can do myself.
Also looking forward to get psp games on the play.

rooting is nothing like jailbreaking, and it has noting to do with warez, people root to gain read/write access to the /system/ directory on there device, this allows them to run apps that wouldnt ususally work on there device, it also lets them remove bloatware (preinstalled applications) and theme there android, rooting is usually a precursor to flashing custom roms too
I also am very new to android but am learning fast.
I've rooted my Play (Used gingerbreak, DEAD EASY!!)
I've paid for the full launcherPro, and also placed a request on their forum for the feature of locking the phone when you slide the phone closed.
However, I have NEVER used a custom ROM, and I am very skeptical. I had a Samsung Omnia HD i8910 with Symbian, and I flashed new firmwares to this because Orange just didn't update the damn thing so I unbranded it.
I have also removed some bloatware with a file manager app (plenty around) whilst having root access.
I also have app2sd to move apps to SD, but I have to admit only a handful have gone on to it. I have not yet done the adb command to default all future apps to SD.
I am keeping a close watch on this forum for any sign of updates/upgrades/custom ROMs. I like the idea of new themes and faster phone, but I would hate to lose ANY of the original functionality, I would feel robbed.
This is my first android phone too. Was unsure about rooting at first but im glad i did. After rooting with gingerbreak (took like 40 seconds) I installed titanium backup (no need for apps2sd, the phone itself can put apps on the sd and the stuff the phone cannot move, Titanium backup can e.g The preloaded games, now under 1mb instead of 30mb). Removed all the crap from the phone using the safe apps to remove thread. The phone now runs faster loads more ram.
If i was to give a reason to root. It would be adfree from the market. Best app ever. Hated ads on the free apps and i have not got a credit card to use on the market (yet lol)
Its seems though if you update to 2.3.3 you cannot root anymore. Google has fixed the exploit used by gingerbreak.

iPhone jailbreaking allows you to run custom software (kinda like homebrew emulators and such) not originally designed to work on the iphone.
Rooting as mentioned above is not this.
Custom software can run on Android phones without the need to root. All those emulators etc will work on any Stock Android phone.
Android phones give you read/write access to sd card directories. Rooting basically gives you root (phone memory) read/write access.
This is useful because it allows you to install custom roms on your phone (sort of like customised versions of the operating system), get rid of bloatware (for example, i deleted all my vodafone pre-installed software which was basically crap) and more excitingly overclock your phone.
Installing new roms and overclocking will require extensive programming knowledge, but luckily the guru's on xda normally produce their own versions which us mere mortals can download and use.
No custom Roms or the ability to overclock the Xperia Play has to my knowledge been released to us yet. YET.
For now, root your phone, install titanium, get rid of bloatware, partition your sd card, and move all your games to your sd card to free up as much phone memory as possible.
Change your sd card cache size to 1024 to improve phone speed.
And wait for the custom rom and overclocking goodness that im sure will be available within the next few months.
Hope this post helped, i too was a complete noob and just picked a few things up along the way from reading here and there
edit - Rooting is safe for a noob to do. Other stuff such as installing roms can brick your phone rendering it useless if you do not know what you are doing. READ THOROUGHLY before you do anythingslightly advanced. And sorry to say, but there are no psp emulators that i know of. You will not be able to play PsP games. Sucks, i know

You can move unmovable apps to the sd card by using link2sd, which will only work if you partition your sd card.
There might be other ways, such as manual commands, but i've never tried that way.

Thanks for saying this. I have been using titanium for a while but never knew it could move un-movable apps to the sd card.
The way i found out how to do it was batch moving in the menu you bring up with the menu button.
Appswap (paid version only) claims that it is the only program on the market that can do this. But know i know different !
Thanks
i just long hold the app and click "move to sd"

Super One Click Root will not work, even with GingerBreak, nor will z4root

The only thing I was using root for was to remove the annoying startup and shutdown videos. There aren't any great ROMs for the Sprint Tab, and the OEM build is pretty solid, so I don't think root access is a big deal for many users at the moment.

I have not tried it just came accross it. I only got Gingerbread running a few minutes ago.\
Edit: This is for Android 2.3.3 and NOT the current Sprint update of 2.3.4.
I'm hoping for a custom kernel with root and CWM soon, and I'd help expedite the process if someone needs a tester. Or even someone to do all the work (as long as there's some direction, i know i could manage to piece things together and compile it, i just suck with actual pure coding)

I think it doesn't help that sprint's tab isn't very popular and doesn't have the developers like the GSM does. I know nothing about it but I would guess that even though people are developing roms, that finding a root exploit is a completely different animal. I'm guessing since 2.3.4 isn't on a lot of phones yet doesn't help.

I'm going back to 2.2 until root is achieved for 2.3.4. I mainly got the tab so I could tether on the go. Having to find wifi while out and about when you want to get online is difficult sometimes. If you're lucky to find open and free, many times they have ports blocked. You can only 80 or 8080. I've got wd live and roku and boxee for Netflix and crap.
im definately frustrated i dont have root. i want to put some apks in system/app and cant through crippled file explorers. also, i want to start pushing out some themes. the SGT has gotten little love and that needs to change. i was holding out on FROYO cause i knew it wouldnt be long till everyone was on GB. ive been talking with DRockstar about getting a cwm put together specifically for the SGT and that should get things rolling.
please give me your feedback.

One of the first things I did with root was adjust the pixel density in the build.prop file so the icons didn't look so cartoonish. If the GB update breaks that and I can't fix it, then it might kills me. With the larger icons, the Zeam launcher doesn't even look right at all.

Well there are several apps that don't work with root.
thats strange because I haven't noticed. I rooted my G3 as soon as I got home with it and I didn't have any apps break due to it. I don't use all the apps though and froze a lot of them. Perhaps the ones it "breaks" are those I don't use. Can you tell me which apps having root breaks because I'd like to check that out because in almost 4 years of rooting my past 5 phones I've never encountered root breaking an app.
Isis/softcard can read if you can get root permissions and displays an error message, but if you use rootcloak from xposed framework, it'll run just fine.

I have already disabled a few apps but I want to delete them totally, they are just using space up. Cannot root as my two banking apps will not run and neither will Sky Go

Yeah you can. All you gotta do is, root with Stump, get superSU from playstore and then get titanium, do what you gotta do and then go to superSU and "Unroot".
That option deletes root. Goodluck

thats strange because I haven't noticed. I rooted my G3 as soon as I got home with it and I didn't have any apps break due to it. I don't use all the apps though and froze a lot of them. Perhaps the ones it "breaks" are those I don't use. Can you tell me which apps having root breaks because I'd like to check that out because in almost 4 years of rooting my past 5 phones I've never encountered root breaking an app.

well the two main ones for me are Halifax Banking and Sky Go. Also the Barclays banking app will not work. When you try to run them you get a message saying "Sorry we do not support rooted phones".
As it happens I have now moved a few apps to my SD card so have freed up a bit of space which was my main reason for my original post, I rather like the LG way of doing things, much better than Sense and definitely better than TW, so might just keep it stock :good:
Also my first LG phone been 4 days and I love it!! First thing I did was root with Towelroot the easiest I've ever rooted an android. With root everything is the way I want it now and so much less bloatware then my S4 had.
Really happy with this phone and quickly got use the buttons in the back which I find much easier.
