[Q] USB Tether - Continuum General

Hello. I have rooted and installed the wireless tether app which is working perfectly. However, there are times when I am on the road out in the middle of nowhere and I need to charge while tethered to my laptop. Can someone direct me to a USB tether app?
Thank you in advance.

Why can't you just use wireless tether, just plug your phone into the computer xP
There are USB tether apps, they just cost money.... you willing to shed out some cash?

Sorry, but that isn't the question I asked. There are times that I prefer a USB tether. Is there a free or low cost USB tether app?

How about you do a quick search on the market and try and find one it's easier to do a quick search in the market than it is posting a whole new thread :|
As i said, yes there are tether apps, but no they are not usually free..... easy tether lite is the only half decent one...
Also, if you would've searched online, you would've seen that Verizon is not letting us download us apps like this anymore for the most part.....

Again, thanks for the help, but as I said above, it is rooted, meaning I can use 3rd party apps as well. I have done a search on the market, but as part of my research I always ask the folks here that are "in the know" about these things. Finding the right app when you are new to an OS is not always a simple matter of doing a Google search or looking in the marketplace. It is always good to ask those more knowledgeable than myself.

PdaNet is a decent USB tether app along with EasyTether. Hope this helps.

Leave to someone with the name of a statesman and a good beer to be helpful. Thanked.
I never did like PDANet. Has anyone used EasyTether?
Other suggestions?

I've used EasyTether. I prefer PdaNet.
Sent from my SCH-I400 using XDA App

I've used easy tether. It's fairly easy to use, but it takes a bit of time to set up when you first use it. After you have the desktop client installed, it's a breeze to use.

Ugh, desktop client needed. Not to fond of the need to install additional software. I appreciate the input however!

[Q] How to use Epic as mobile hotspot

Ok one of the reasons I mainly got this phone was the mobile hotspot feature because the internet at my college blows and it would be nice for everyone to be able to browse the internet in a single dorm and not just 2 people. Unfortunately Sprint has made it so this feature costs an addition 25 with your bill. I don't pay the bill so this isn't an option for me. I heard that if you root the epic, you can use the mobile hotpot feature for free. I haven't rooted it yet but I have the z4 root application on my phone. So how can I go about doing this?
Run z4root and then download and run wireless tether. Its not on the market so google it and you will find the latest version. I don't recall whether it will run on a stock kernel; if not you'll want to install a custom rom.
Sent from my Bonzai'd Epic 4g.
It is usually usable only on the Eclair build when rooted. Sometimes not ;-)

Ok I found a hit on google for wireless tether on google code. The only samsung glaxy device I saw said it ran on 1.5 but I'm on 2.1 so it should work right. I'm not sure if the device listed works with epic but it said galaxy device. Also will sprint notice the increase of data usage and charge me more?
Nope, unless you start dl movies.

So standard internet browsing should be fine then?
Your expectations are unrealistic and this is a really easy subject to search for.
I don't unerstand how my expectations are unrealistic but thanks for the responses anyways.

Here you. Root and wifi tether and other stuff all in one. Easy menu.

If you are on 2.1 the best way is to get clockwork (use the one click root) then find mobile ap in the dev section and apply the zip. Way more stable than wireless tether in my experience.

Thanks much Jay. Gonna give that link the once over before I mess with the phone itself. Thanks ipaq as well. I'll check that out if I find any problems with the one in Jay's link.
Definitly if you are staying on stock rom, use mobile ap, it is soooooooooo much better then wireless tether, and if you follow my tutorial after rooting and getting clockwork first you can have themes with it too.
I think what he's trying to say about your expectations is you think you can do this and give everyone internet on your dorm. Do you know how slow that will run? Also you can only connect so many devices at one time. I don't know how many for wireless tether but mobile AP is 5. Yes wireless tether is a great feature its just not going to meet your expectations for helping a while dorm out.

Am I missing the OP's question that Sprint called this device a mobile hotspot?? Is Sprint lying?
If you don't pay the $30 a month charge for hotspotting, will Sprint find out and charge you any extra if you tether your phone after rooting it?

Ive been tethering since i had windows mobile, and ive never been in trouble, just dont download movies or any other big files. I mean its not even worth it to download movies takes too long anyhow. Just dont take your phone in rooted with that app on it or then u might get into some trouble.
If you have an epic 4g you have unlimited (truely unlimited) data...they are not going to say anything regardless of how much data you use. That being said spint will not Check the status of your phone (root or un rooted). You are go to go on tethering

Yeah, I don't plan on doing anything crazy like torrenting. I'd use this to tether my iPad if I'm in an airport or on a long trip, or maybe if I'm on vacation and don't wanna pay $10-30 for the hotel's wifi. That's all. Nothing mundo crazy where I'm using gigs of transfers.
Thanks for letting me know!
I have a question that I hope someone here can answer.
I've toyed with the idea of installing one of the hotspot programs. But, I'm very wary of surfing the Net without a NAT/firewall between my Windows box and the Net. Do these programs provide firewall-type protection to the machines that are surfing through them?

[Q] Brother wants a DX, simplest way to get 3g hotspot?

Hello all, I'm trying to help my brother decide on a new verizon phone. I'm stuck with at&t and own a captivate, so I'm familiar with the development community over there. However, I'm a little more clueless with this neck of the woods. Although I've enjoyed my captivate, I'm actually trying to push him to get the Droid X instead of the Fascinate (I thought he would enjoy the bigger screen and a better customer support?).
1. First, is there anything he should be aware of that might give him problems with the Droid X (hardware/software concerns--akin to the troublesome gps of the galaxy s line)?
2. He primarily wants a smart phone to help out his business (a small machine shop) so he can check emails and whatnot. Along with this his biggest request was to be able to use the mobile hotspot function without paying verizon for it (aside from the phone's $30 unlimited data). So my questions for this are:
a. From what I've gathered in the last day, is that he needs to root and install an app like "wireless tether" or something like that. Is the simplest way to root by installing z4root?
b. Is there anything else he needs to do besides the root and the tether app?
c. Is there any risk that verizon could figure out he's tethering a computer while not paying for the service?
Thanks for any help and clarifications. I appreciate any other comments if you'd recommend a different phone (Fascinate or Incredible)--I know, this is in the Droid X forum, but I thought I'd ask anyway.
Z4root is way easy to use, just install and hit one button and you're done. Wireless tether app works well but occasionally it pauses while in sleep mode. Awakening the phone resolves this issue. I also use baranacle wifi tether which seems to have this issue alot less. I'm sure Verizon can guess that you're using a tether app if you use alot of data, but I use far beyond the average amount of data and they have yet to say anything or attempt to charge me extra. I haven't tried the fascinate or incredable so I wouldn't be able to say how they compare to the x but I have been very happy with the performance of mine. Its very snappy and hasn't let me down yet. Oh and I don't use that much GPS so I would also not be able to give you a definitive answer to that as well.

Awesome, thanks! It's good to know that it's pretty simple to do, especially since my brother doesn't have any experience in modding things like this (that's why he turns to his more savvy--nerdier--younger brother).
The GPS was just an example I used to refer to the much maligned failure of the Galaxy S line. I was just wondering if the X had any similar types of downfalls that he should be aware of before being let down later.
Other than the locked bootloader, I've been pretty happy with my DX. And since installing the Liberty 1.5 ROM last Friday, I've been SUPER happy with it. It's a very nice phone, and pretty speedy.
+1 on liberty 1.5, great rom.

Best ROM for USB Tethering?

I've read a LOT of wonderful and useful info here but I think I'm overloaded. So, assuming I have everything I need to root my phone and I'm ready to go, I'm not looking for lots of bells and whistles...I just need a ROM that will allow me to use the USB Tethering function out of the box. Suggestions?
Easy Tether from Market . . . free app . . . paid app allows HTTPS connections . . .
Lol easy tether. Only a noob would download that.
Options are
CM7 or CM6
Any sense 2.2 based rom such as
Myn's warm 2.2
Fresh
Mikfroyo
Evio
Sprint lovers
Vaelpack
Baked snack
Kingsrom
Etc.
Almost every rooted rom will have unlocked USB and wifi tethering

Funny someone mentioned Easy Tether 'cause I just tried it today! As with all the other Market products, you can do basic web browsing but for https pages, instant messaging and whatnot, you have to pay and that's precisely what I was trying to avoid. I found it very slow and glitchy as well and there's absolutely no way a real noob could install it with the provided instructions - you have to be pretty knowledgeable beforehand with Windows services and pairing the device to your machine to make sense of the "How To". PDANet was a far better experience as far as Market solutions go.
Anyway, on to the rooting 'cause that's an actual solution rather than a workaround. Your suggestions as always were brilliant and I'm going to start with Evio. I see a good deal of positive feedback with that so it seems to be a decent starting point for a first timer like me. I'm absolutely taking some of the others out for a spin at least for a day or two as well...I'm a kid in a candy store! WEEEEEEEE!

Easy Tether is a good and viable option for someone that either can't or doesn't want to root their phone . . . I used it all last summer at the campground with my Moment and had no problems with it whatsoever . . . "noob" or not, it serves it's purpose . . .
I've been using PDANet on CM7 becasue I can't seem to get the wired tether to work. Windows never finds the drivers...
My Windows 7 laptops won't connect to my phone(CM7.0.2.1&TiamatSBC4.0.3) via Wifi or USB tether, it won't detect it as an adapter, and it will find the wireless access point but will not connect to it.

You need an att tethering plan to use webtop.... I don't know what you are talking about. There is a reason why xda is becoming more and more irrelevant as time goes on and developers are choosing a different website. It's people like you guys who just need to one up other posters who are causing this. There are some great people on here, then there are you guys. That's the reason why the rootzwiki is becoming the new standard. Oh and I should sell my atrix cause I asked a question about webtop? That clearly means I have no idea what I'm doing right? I have read that webtop should work when you are on wifi, but that's just what I've heard since I don't use it. If you're trying to use it while on AT&T's data network then, yes, you need tethering but there are tethering and webtop hacks galore in the "noob" thread that is stickied at the top of the "General" forum.

Also, try not to take anything personally. This is an internet forum, just let it roll off your back.
Just looked over the sticky and it has a link to a cwm installable webtop file that I already have. Nothing about disabling att from verifying the tethering plan required to use the webtop on 3G. Webtop works fine on wifi... And before gingerbread, there used to be a way to get it to work without a tethering plan. That is why I asked this "n00b" question that nobody seems to have an answer for.

Have you tried the "Entitlement" mod (enabling tethering)? It should be the one right above or below the Webtop link.

No problem, hope you find something that works. Like I've said, I don't use it so I don't know what would actually work.
Also, like I've said, you can't take things personally on the internet, but if I can give some advice. Try to be more descriptive in your comments especially when starting an entire thread. Include things like what "mods" you have already used, and maybe include what ROM you're using and what resources you have already searched through for answers, you could even go as far as describing the steps you are using when encountering the issue. All of this helps the rest of us help you. Your original post "looks" like a "noob" question and that's like blood in the water for the sharks.

OP asked a valid question and didn't deserve to be noob-bashed. I have the same issue. I have done the "entitlement" hack using the SQLLite Editor to set the "Entitlement Check" field to "0", and I am able to use my Atrix as a mobile hotspot without a tethering plan.
However, when I attempt to use Firefox on the Lapdock while connected via 3G (WiFi off), a popup appears saying "Verifying AT&T account status for webtop...". Then, after a few seconds, it fails and another dialog pops up saying "The Firefox browser requires a Wi-Fi connection or appropriate data plan. Please use Wi-Fi or call AT&T Customer Service at 1-800-331-0500 to add the appropriate data plan to your account"
Any help would be appreciated.
Try this and see if it works. Make sure you have done the entitlement hack and while connected to the webtop turn on the mobile hotspot on your phone and then go into your networks and choose the tether apn.
I tried something in that nature and was browsing firefox on my phones data. I'll try again in the morning and see if that's what I did.

Question.
Is it considered tethering if instead of using the full browser firefox, that requires a tethering plan, to instead use a browser (such as Dolphin HD) INSIDE of the phone module app on the webtop... since it's actually using your phone's apps instead of firefox?
just a thought.

Obviously that would never be detected, but ATT does consider it tethering. Total BS if you ask me, all the doc is is an external screen/keyboard/pad/battery, it is in no way a seperate system.
The odd thing is that while using a StarHub prepaid sim in Singapore on my unlocked ATT Atrix it doesn't do that check, only when I use my ATT sim.
Sent from my MB860 using Tapatalk
Thanks that solution works
Thanks everyone for suggesting the "hotspot" trip. I am curious as to why this needs to be done is we are using the entitlement hack. Does anyone know why this is or is the just the way to get around having to pay twice for data? Also, have you guys noticed a big hit in your battery life when using the hotspot tethering? I'm just happy that this solution works because I got the lapdock just for this reason.
There is something in the ATT firmware that recognizes when the phone is using an ATT sim and disables data connections to the webtop environment. The whole time I was in Singapore using a StarHub Green prepaid sim my phone never did that "Verifying account blablablah..." when I docked the phone in my LapDock, as soon as I docked it I could start using Firefox.
An interesting note: the phone disables all data connections for a moment when it does this check. I noticed it because Pandora died on me one day when I was listening and I docked my phone. I watched the connectivity arrows on the H+ icon the next time I docked my phone and they went away for a few seconds just as that toaster notification popped up. Even with the Entitlement Mod this happens.
Hotspot tethering will kill your battery life, although that battery life is augmented by the lapdock. I'm pretty sure you can turn tethering off once you've started up Firefox and are browsing away. Don't ask me how I know, a little bird told me.
No, using apps inside the phone view isn't considered tethering. You can use the stock browser inside there without doing anything. If att calls using a non-stock browser tethering, pitch a fit and tell them to piss up a rope.
And regarding my snark earlier: I think a lot of the people who have been here for a while get tired of seeing threads like "Can I haz root on my phone OMG I'm a noob" when we remember discussing the same subject multiple times in the past. I know this particular question has been asked and answered before. I found it ironic that you were being chided by someone who had < 10 posts.
tl;dr - non-ATT sims work without mods, ATT sim data connection gets disabled, this has been covered.

That being said I use T-Mobile so I just use the built in tether option in my phone, but my buddy who is on Verizon uses open garden and it works great for pairing his A500. Sounds like you may have another issue than just the app. Never owned an LG Android phone myself but just reading through markey comments it seems like 97% of the 1 star comment are someone on an LG phone that can't get something to work, maybe it just the phone lol.
i had a vortex. If you can get barnacle or wifi tether for root users to send out a non-adhoc signal, it'll work really well. Does take a bit of trial and error (and using different versions of the apk) to make it work, but once it does its flawless.
OK good suggestions. My issues is I don't like paying Verizon for something that should be free, I have the older unlimited data package, and I can't find open garden anywhere but the market.

OK I've tried both while playing around with all of the settings but nothing. I need an application that does NOT transmit an ad-hoc signal. Did some research on it. Just can't find the application.

Or you can just download the ad-hoc patch from here http://www.multiupload.com/AM4G3BJLBR and flash using recovery it would be a lot more simple
Lazy people grrrrr
You have to have a rooted tablet..
download the ad-hoc fix.
rename the existing file in system/bin if i remember right.
set permissions as on old file.. (root explorer file manager is best to do this )
then you can see the any of the above apps mentioned on the phone if you have it set correctly. .
you can also try PDA-NET app... it does tether between android phone and tablet.. but i have not personally tried it..its in beta i think still free and on the market.. the app has to be installed on phone and tablet.. this is the flashable cwm zip.. or you can extract the file from it..
good luck . BY THE WAY THIS HAS BEEN ANSWERED OVER A MILLION TIMES on this forum.. GOOGLE SEARCH CAN BE YOUR FRIEND AND MAKE YOU LOOK LESS LAZY ..

OK. I got it working out now. My a500 will see all ad-hoc networks now. I did the wap-suplement swap thing. Had to do it manually and play with the permissions a bit but now it works.

And still there is no official forum for the LG Vortex but there is one for the Motorola Bravo and I wanted to be able to tether both of the phones as needed.
