Let the rumor train keepon a rollin'

Also, as some comments have said, I think they're mixing up 4G service for 4G hotspot. I don't believe (or cross my fingers/hope/pray/etc) that Sprint will charge extra for 4G, but will charge the $10-20 for the mobile hotspot.

That's over two months from now.... WTF lol.

Let me ask you Sprint customers about coverage.
I know they say Verizon has the most coverage blah blah and AT&T is next. I just think in sheer numbers these two get the most rezognition because of the 90Mil and 85Mil customer they have.
But I have been looking at the Spring Coverage and it seems they cover better of lots of areas that Verizon and AT&T are not that good at and equal to areas to areas they cover well.
Also any roaming charges? I ask this only because I am not familair with their data/phone plans anymore. The last time I had them was when roaming was a KILLER Charge!
So would you say their coverage is not given enough credit?
I don't like Verizon. I am inclined to pick up an HTC Telstra on April 27th for my AT&T network. I have no contract at the moment. I got the T-Mobile and returned it due to the bad coverage at some client locations and inside buildings the are horrid.
AT&T seems to cover almost every area that I need so far.
Sprint seems to cover them well but I like real life data not Sprint Data.

Sprint has fairly good coverage in my area. I live in a small town and have full bars inside my house. The only dropouts I have experienced in a 60 mile radius are in places where I doubt there is a tower for any cell provider and even then data just drops to 1x (I drive across an inlet bridge with land about a mile wide with the atlantic ocean to one side and the bay to the other side.)
I feel Sprint is getting back in the game full force. Time will tell when they roll out the EVO and 4G. Some potential problems could arise such as customers purchasing the EVO only to find out there is no 4G coverage in their area etc... But it's a risk Sprint will take and incentive to expand their network. You also have to remember not everyone is a smart phone junky or even cares about 4G. Most want a phone to talk on and text/picture message. I get asked by someone sitting on a laptop checking their email about why I play with my phone so much and I turn and smile and say I'm just doing the same thing you are and they still don't really get it. So it's an evolution although it will be marketed as a revolution.

I think Sprint's main problem, and something they have obviosuly known and been working on, is their device line.
Why is AT&T so popular? The iPhone of course...
If you don't like the iPhone, or don't like AT&T, check out Verizon, they've got that Droid!..

Wait, Tmob sucks... What's Sprint got? A TP2 that costs me 299?!, so yeah, that Droid looks good.
People are obsessed with what device they have, and THEN about their coverage. It's the only way AT&T can get away with jacking up their iPhone prices that high -- while Sprint offers the SAME plan for 30-40 a month cheaper.
But to answer your question, Sprint's coverage is great for me. Granted I'm in Texas (Sprint has 4G all over the place here), but for the cheaper plan and great coverage, I would say Sprint is probably the best carrier in my region. Why are so few people using Sprint? -my main guess (and I think its a good one) is that Sprint has crap phones.

I don't think you can call 51.9 million Sprint subscribers (as of January 2010) "so few". Verizon had 67.2 million, and AT&T was sitting at 71.3 million. So take into account that the AVERAGE cell phone subscriber only knows what they see in commercials, the 15.3 million difference between Sprint and Verizon is easy to imagine. I have run into countless employees who have no idea that Sprint rates are better than Verizon's. They always cite, "Verizon has better coverage...", then I show them the rate difference and they swap over. Not to mention that coverage areas for Sprint and Verizon are almost the same. That being said, AT&T only has 3.9 million more than Verizon, and that can be attributed to the iPhone craze.

I'm in the same predicament, except I started taking advantage of Sprint's 30 day guarantee, and am trying out different phones until the EVO gets here. (~$30 a pop when you return it)
I have a touch pro, and last month tried the Moment, it was cool, but had to return it.
Now I have the Pre, and I'm liking it so much (other than having to figure out how to pop open they keyboard with one hand) that I'm afraid I might not be able to return it.
[email protected] had mentioned that a number of 4G phones are to be released this year, I'm wondering if I should wait until the fall to make a decision on what phone is to keep my upgrade credit.

I was thinking of doing that lol. I had the Pre for a month and return it. All I need is a good device (the Evo) and being a sprint premier customer, I get 1 year contracts. So hopefully that hold me over till the next great device .

Rumor: Sprint and T-Mobile may team up to complete 4G network

On paper, Sprint and T-Mobile seem like complete opposites: Sprint has 4G, T-Mobile has "4G speeds" with HSPA+; Sprint is CDMA, T-Mobile is GSM; Sprint is yellow, T-Mobile is magenta. Ok, maybe that last one is a bit of a stretch, but you get the point. Despite the glaring differences, a rumor has surfaced today stating that the two carriers may soon be in cahoots to finish building out Sprint's 4G network. Three people "familiar with the situation" have spoken to the Wall Street Journal, saying that Sprint's board of directors is considering allowing T-Mobile to invest in Clearwire, the company that is aiding Sprint with their WiMAX network (Sprint also owns 54 percent of Clearwire). Clearwire currently needs billions of dollars to finished expanding its 4G network, the WSJ says, and it needs to figure out if it will continue to soldier on alone or get some financial aid from T-Mobile. This isn't the first time we've heard the possibility of Sprint and T-Mobile teaming up and, if Clearwire and Sprint need as much cash as the WSJ says they do, it may not be the last time.
Although Sprint and T-Mobile could use each other to help bring the fight to AT&T and Verizon, I would be kind of surprised to the number three and four carriers come together. T-Mobile seems pretty invested in their HSPA+ network upgrades and, if they were to invest in WiMAX, their hot new HSPA+ phones would become kind of obsolete. I'll believe it when I see it. Number three and number four? I agree with T being four in terms of network Sprint is #2 behind Verizon last I heard.

Last I read, Sprint is moving forward with LTE purchases. That opens talks again with T.
T will not move to wimax.

I heard that too... but HSPA+ is not LTE and neither are technically 4G. i dont really consider wimax to to be 4G either thou.

I dont want a merger lol less competition equals more money from my pockets. There is plenty of competition right now though among the monthly plan companies keeping things low I guess.
Also it sounds like T-Mobile would be paying Sprint to help build 4G and T-Mobile would get in reward to use 4G. So... now we gotta share with T-Mobile. Also I bet if we start sharing we get capped. I mean currently 4G is uncapped mostly because there arnt a huge network of people using all of its resources.

Not quite. The reason there aren't any worries with WiMax is because of the huge amounts of bandwidth Clearwire and Sprint have access to. The bandwidth combined with the shorter range of towers means that the network can handle a lot of people using the network at any given time. T-mobile is small enough, it shouldn't make a big enough difference. The bandwidth part won't change if they ever convert to LTE, so Clear and Sprint have the advantage right now due to having the only functioning 4G capable network and the ability to upgrade that network relatively effortlessly, and still have enough bandwidth to beat Verizon/everyone else.

I actually don't think this is a bad idea. If it would help expedite the expansion of the 4G network then onward and upward I say. For the amount of bandwidth that T-Mo would gain access to it would be a benefit to them. And maybe Sprint could get some pointers from T-Mo on customer service. Sprint has come a long way in that respect since we signed up, but I hear a lot of T customers swear by the service they get. All in all it sounds like it could have a win-win for both companies and the customers. Then again corporate America has an amazing penchant for screwing up what could otherwise be a good thing. I guess we'll have to wait and see.

anyone else fed up with Sprints lack of 4g?

love the epic, awesome phone. but being stuck in 2006 with 3G data and paying basically the same as other people are paying to the other carriers with 4g data is frustrating to say the least. Especially when I was told 4G would be in my area but it isn't anywhere within 5 miles of where I live and I don't live in the boonies. Further, even where I can get 4G, its completely unusable, just goes on for a little bit, then disconnects, then reconnects. Chat told me they were still building out the network which I seriously fail to believe.
So bottom line, has anyone had any luck with getting out of the ETF fee so they can go to a carrier that didn't lie about 4G?

I have 4G data over most of the central Ohio area. It works great, very consistent and still has better coverage than any of the other networks "4G" services.
I am tired of seeing so many thread about either not having 4G or having it and thinking it doesn't work. If you don't want to pay for it, then get a phone that doesn't have the option, then you can't complain. Sprint is STILL cheaper than any of the other networks for comparable features and options. Even with a "$10" service charge for "data".
And on that note... Doing research before jumping into a contract for something that MAY or MAY NOT work is a smart idea. I didn't even buy the phone or plan to begin with for the 4G service, I bought it for the keyboard, and the 4G was a nice addition.
I really don't know what else to say, but it seems a LOT of the Epic 4G owners are whiny babies. At least the majority of the threads leading up to the Froyo release seem to point towards that conclusion.

That's pretty easy for you to say since you already have 4G.

From what I have read, no carrier has true 4G currently. But t be honest I am pretty pleased with the speeds I get with 3G.
But it would be nice to get the speed boost that sprint is calling 4g

I'm glad its working for you, why don't you try it down here in south florida. it apparently works okay for people in Miami too. that doesn't help the people that were all told they were getting it. And before you type inane stupid things, try to think before you type. I did my research, i was told 4G was coming, and specifically to my city, yet it isn't in my city or any of the neighboring cities, plus sprint is talking about switching to LTE so thats a pretty good indication that WIMAX certainly isn't getting built out anymore in areas where it is "Live". And according to sprint south florida is live from Miami Beach to West Palm Beach. Oh except for the 80% of the parts that aren't. LOL. Oh and you didn't buy the phone for 4G, thats good for you, I bet 80% or more of the people did buy it for 4G. No one is complaining abou the price, its a great price, if 4G actually worked. and the other companies like ATT Tmobile have speeds that are at least 7 times higher than 3G sprint. so I'd consider that 4G. Verizon will be there very soon and Metro, Metro of all carriers, the dog crap carrier has 4G and its half the price of what i'm paying for sprint to lie directly to me.

Such a poor argument... They are charging the extra cash now on any smartphone. Also, have you seen a single decent android phone on sprint besides the evo, shift, or epic? They don't exist for a reason, to funnel people into 4g phones.
to the op... Yeh I'm fairly sick of not having it, it's extremely close to me but it fades all the time. Basically, just like the epic itself it was a great idea, awesome technology, but poor execution leaving it lacking.

its not that I really need it that much, its the thought of forking over 150 bucks a month for 2 phones for almost the next 2 years that is frustrating, especially when 3G is out of date now, let alone by next year.

So you are saying people shouldn't try to future proof as much as possible? Not everyone can afford to buy a new phone every year or 2 years, etc. So if you are up for a new phone, why not get a 4G phone. That way, when 4G finally comes to a city that is on Sprints list, you won't have to upgrade your hardware.
Seems like Sprint isn't upgrading/expanding their 4G network at all and Sprint customers are stuck paying just as much as other people on other carriers for the same/slower speeds. Not cool
Fed up with the lack of 4G? Absolutely. And let's not forget Sprint shafting their "Premier" customers and getting rid of yearly upgrades if your plan isn't over 89.99 or if you've been with Sprint for 10 years. If Sprint keeps it up, they will continue to lose customers.

Look. The epic 4g has 4g capability. The phone is a multimedia powerhouse with or with out 4g. 4g is nice but not a necessity. Can some of you honestly say that you would tether your phone to the computer to play WOW? If the answer is yes...please seek counseling for your WOW and youtube addictions. Guys nothing is ever truely perfect.

Id be frustrated if I bought th phone and was paying for 4g and not getting it.
But, I live in nyc so I knew I wasgonna get 4g sooner or later so I upgraded and a week later 4g went live
You should've gone with another carrier. Like the other guy said, do research befoe signing your wireless life away for two years.
Right no I don't even have 4g service, or even 1xrtt. I'm in wifi only right now, but idc. Because I know when I get home, I'm not gonna have any service issues. I leave 4g on while I'm home in nyc.
I was seriously considering going to t-mo because my friend with his TP2 was getting 5mb/s dl speeds and stuff, but sprint came through at the right time so I stuck with them.

I spend 1/2 of my time in NYC (which has 4g) and 1/2 the time in Long Island which does not. Although it work well when the phone is actually connected, most of the time I cannot connect to it while inside a building (even in Manhattan coverage is pretty spotty) - so when I wifi tether 4G hardly ever works. In Long Island, most of the places that I am in have wifi so lack of 4G has not been a problem personally. But I understand being upset for paying the $10 a month without ANY 4G availability in the home market.

again, did the research, read the quoted press releases and the article from the newspaper down here that listed the cities 4G was coming to. so i would be happy to go with another carrier but can't fork over ETF, and buy another phone when I already forked out 500 for these.

i don't know about you, but I don't do anything major on the phone, I do like to browse the web though and occasionally download something, like maybe a new rom for the phone thats impossible to do at 3G speeds that half the time are 300K or less. want to send a picture? how good is that going to work on 300K. So its not like 4G is just for gamers or youtube fanatics. youtube isn't even installed on my phone.

I have used WiMax in Atlanta and Nashville, and its awesome.
The Epic is Epic even without 4G, but I do wish I had it here in Louisville.

My concern is they've quit releasing any sort of expansion plans. Last year when the EVO and Epic were fresh they went on and on about which markets would be getting it. Now, nothing. If I at least knew if it was eventually coming to my area I'd be happy. Sprint has until my contract is up or VZW/ATT get LTE going to get some 4G in my area or I'll finally be switching carriers after almost 10 years. That being said, I get pretty decent 3G speeds to tide me over in the meantime.

Actually t-mobile has a equivalent plan cost. My girlfriend has a G2 and it is faster than my 4g (san antonio) she was getting 8k down while I get 6 or 7. Not to mention they get a better signal here.
No need to be a jerk about it. You would be just a frustrated if a sprint rep told you that 4g is coming soon...but it hasn't.

No one lied. On the Sprint website you can look at the 4G coverage map. If that wasn't good enough, you shouldn't have jumped onboard.

Verizon and T-Mobile are aggressively building out their 4G networks. ATT has upgraded its 3G and unveils 4G this summer.
Sprint's 4G expansion has mostly halted as Clearwire teeters on the edge of bankruptcy. This 'news' was obviously not known when these phones were released with Wimax touted. The OP's criticism is valid.

really?? I could look at the coverage map before they put it on the site right? before it was live in south florida? The rep asking me for my zip code and telling me I would be getting it soon wasn't lying? or the one on chat that said they are still building it and I would get 4G soon wasn't lying right?

Sprint can't afford for clearwire to faulter yet. Sprint will slowly move out of it meaning no more expansion of wimax, If they want the Iphone with 4g they will need to go lte anyways. They will limp clearwire along until they can afford to let it go belly up.

They own the company via majority ownership soo Clearwire is theirs to do as they see fit... It would be pointless for them to keep pouring money into it. But Supposdly the plan to run many technologies using the same panels is supposed to help along with expansions...

I could see them announcing phones with either both technologies, or just one of the technologies (though I highly doubt the latter of the two).
Sprint has too much to lose if they decide to drop wimax. That completely defeats the purpose of launching new phones with 4G. Not only that, but a lot of people that have switched to Sprint for there smartphones most likely have a 4G capable device. To top that all off, Sprint has spent a lot of money on Clearwire, so it would be extremely stupid to just throw all of their progress away.
Now I haven't heard of a dual mode lte/wimax chip yet (I remember something but I don't think it was wimax), but if Sprint did use that in future phones, that would be completely awesome. It would allow them to keep their current investments while also introducing new products.
On the phone side, I could see them announcing an Iphone, the Kingdom, the Galaxy Within (although that may come sooner), another Samsung Phone, and maybe a few mid class smartphones. Most of these are just guesses, but I would be happy if I was right

It would be nice if Sprint would expand both their existing 4g as well as the possible new 4g, as they have many existing customers who pay the extra 4g fee as they've been told by sprint stores that "it's coming" to their area.
It would be another disappointment if this turned out to be a dangling carrot to increase sales.

There is no "4g" fee. It's a fee for ALL smart phones. 3g and 4g.

This announcement is likely about their partnership with LightSquared, the wholesale LTE provider that was causing grief with GPS systems. It provides land-and-satellite based LTE that could potentially provide coverage across the entire United States.
I highly doubt that Sprint is going to keep investing in WiMax phones once their LTE network goes full-throttle. Clear is already having problems, and adoption of their services hasn't been as great as they hoped it would be. They'll be around as an ISP for a while, but Sprint isn't going to go out its way to develop hybrid LTE/WiMax chips when LTE is clearly the technology of the future. Honestly, why would anyone use WiMax when LTE is available in all the same (and more, thanks to LightSquared's satellite coverage) locations?
WiMax got Sprint out the door with 4G first, but that also means that it's old technology and everyone else has moved on to the latest and greatest. Sprint needs to catch up, and I have high hopes about this LightSquared service, both as a Sprint customer and a rural internet user.

my .02 is that the only reason sprint wants the lte is to later on strike a roaming deal with verizon so we could use their lte which will be more available and nearly everywhere

This 100%. It would be nice to see 4G, in any form on Sprint, in my area soon. VZW and the GSM provider(s) already have it here, why not Sprint.

that they are about to turn on the Vision plan they been upgrading towers too....
using all the spectrum they own better....
and powering on the small repeaters ... to enhance their 4G service....

Really? When I signed up for my plan I could have sworn I had to pay for premium data only because of 4G. Must have been mistaken...

Yes, you are mistaken.

I'm more than a little bit concerned about LightSquared's potential interference with GPS. I hope that they can resolve that properly, especially if Sprint were to partner with them.

To be fair though a little bit, the fee at first was only on the Evo, and even the Epic when it was released. Now it's just on every smartphone, but $10 isn't gonna break the bank for me personally.

Its impossible to deal with account services for an airave...

I called 1888-211-4227 requesting an airave in order to fix a coverage issue I've been having for the past 3 months.
It started out small but today it got on my nerve, the problem is that all 4 phones would show full 3g signal but when I tried to place a call and send text messages I got a network failure.
Today I was expecting a friend who drove 80miles to bring me a textbook my son needed for college and he told me he would call me when he was at the security gate of my neighborhood.
Security told him to leave because they couldn't reach ANY of my phones and after 2 hours he was able to reach me.
It pisses me off because when I called account services, I got to talk to 5 people who sounded like they knew what they were doing but it turns out they were idiots.
All of them transferred me to the same department over and over until their network failed and the call was dropped.
I got pissed and sent them an email demanding an airave and service for the damn premium data ad on I pay for with 100kbps 3g service.
sorry if I sound like a douche but damn it pisses me off that everyone says they improved customer service when its still the same idiots on the phone.

The airrave doesnt always pull your calls when someone tries to reach you .. my ex called me like 5 times in a row and on the 6th it finally rang... better than 2hours but ya never know..

Yea, I will be completely honest, I got an airave, and it was WAY more trouble than it was worth. It kept HOGGING by bandwidth, and I have a 20mb connection, it would slow all computers down to 5kb/s. It would randomly go off and on, texts would come in late (i would get no texts for hours, then i would get 50 all at once). And it messes with the gps on the phones, so its impossible to use Google Maps to map out a route.

damn, I really don't know what sprints deal is, I live in a very populated area where AT&T and Tmo have 4g and 3g without issues, somehow sprints been sucking and they haven't bothered to fix it.
I have full bars of 3g on all of my phones and I can see some cell sites from the roof of my home...I think the 3g tower is close to a 1x tower and the evo keeps connecting to both or something so it cant make up its mind of which tower to use. I'm stumped.

I wouldn't say that sprint hasn't bothered to fix it. Trust me they are in the process of doing major tower upgrades, and improving their spectrum. We will see at least a 70% improvement of coverage.

all well and good, but my data speeds and network connections have been getting worse and worse and worse for several months.
unlike these other people, i won't wait any more. i've decided to pay my ETF and go back to TMo.
This entire 'we are fixing towers, sorry about that' thing has been going on consistently during my entire 1.5 year tenure. i'm done with it. when i'm standing in the middle of Manhattan and am getting 0.15mb/s down, i wonder why i am even paying my bill.

They just believe all the lies they read in their emails that they are required to read and believe. Sadly you're on that believes them. lmao. omg. lmao. yeah, he's reading his company emails. LMAO!!!!! I can't say who I work for but I see the same emails. then I talk to the ACTUAL employees that work on the towers and they do less than 2 hours of work a week. They actually told me they know about towers that haven't worked right in a year and won't go out their and fix it. lol oh well.

Of course it isn't because the real information is available on our employee intranet. 4G, 3g, and cdma networks are all getting capacity and spectrum increases.
You're the one that doesn't know what your talking about. These aren't lies or emails that we AREN'T "required" to read.
As far as Wimax goes, Sprint doesn't exactly know what they are going to do with it. They are either going get rid of it completely and use LTE. OR use both Wimax and LTE.
Unless you have anything to back up your information then I suggest you shut the f**k or take your whining somewhere else.

In the spirit of the OP, I'd like to say I'm curious to hear if you get your AIRAVE eventually, and what it takes to actually convince them to send you one.
I live in a valley where the closest Sprint tower is shamefully far away, and services a staggering number of people. Calls rarely drop, quality is fine, and data speeds are okay, but I'm lucky if my cell signal ever surpasses -96dBm. I spend so much time rubbing up against -105dBm that my Evo idles to death in about 10 hours. I compared mine to a brand new stock Evo, and they both fail equally.
So, I tried calling Sprint for an AIRAVE, and while one rep confirmed that I am indeed in a low-coverage area, everyone I spoke to after insisted that nothing's wrong and I should take my phone to the store if I think otherwise. (I'd say with my cell signal, and an average EVDO Ec/Io around -18dB, they'd have to offer me a 100k salary before I'd call my area anything BUT low-coverage.)
On that note, the first rep I spoke to warned me that only the technical support department can comp you an AIRAVE, and technical support warned me that their computers need to indicate a problem before they're allowed to do that. Also, you might want to be ready for a fight if you expect them to waive the monthly fee - I got a few 'no's about that before even being told I couldn't have an AIRAVE.
Anyway, good luck, and let us know how it goes!

Thanks for the reply, right now it kinda blows since I had to buy skype credits in order to be able to work...
As the others said about sprint fixing their towers, we are going to be the last place... do you know why? Everywhere around the island everyone has either an iPhone from AT&T or a blackberry curve 8530 from local gsm carriers, and every time someone asks me about my cell provider, they say its crap because of their service. Sprint stores are always empty when I walk past them in the malls. People here don't see sprint as a national carrier, instead they see it as a local cdma provider.
Sprint took forever to actually begin testing WiMax here and it sucks hard, I hope they get it at full power soon when its officially announced. 3g has always sucked, there are like 5 CDMA carriers using the same towers...(Sprint,Virgin,Boost,Open Mobile,Centennial, etc) This is the cause for network overload, also I would love a data cap, maybe thats what people need in order to let others have at least 500kbps download speed.
I was about to switch to tmo...and the day I went to do so the merger wasd announced so I'm kinda stuck with sprint for now.

If you do decide to bail on Sprint, I saw a pretty hot tip in the Evo 3d section earlier that may help you.

Yeah I saw it, its regarding some increase or something, I'm going to go check out tmo and see how much 4 android phones will cost me a month, if I get a nice comparable deal I will drop sprint.

All I had to do was call customer service, say I can't make a phone call from inside my house and it's been like this since the service started. Three days later I had an air rave, no cost to me. I didn't have to threaten or even get angry. In fact, it was one of the best customer service experiences I've ever had.

Its a chance game, you got a good rep, I got 2 dudes and 2 girls who had no idea what I wanted or an airave was...
