Back cover design - Galaxy S II General

Had a play with the GS2 yesterday in a p4u shop & it made me want the phone even more but one thing that immediately stood out to me was the textured design of the back cover. Not only does it feel horrible but it doesn't quite fit in with the otherwise lovely design of the device.
I really didn't like it at all. It reminded me of cheap some Chinese electronics. Infact when I got home I dug out a 2yr old mp3 player that I bought & it was very similar.
Still getting one though.

When i get the phone the second thing im gonna do is, glue a textured finish on there, maybe some fabric or leather make it feel classy. Should give the phone a nicer texture and change the look of the device.
First thing would be scream like a Justin b fan ?
To comment on your thoughts, there might be a after market company that will make a metallic back cover if the demand is there?

Why not just buy a case for it? I wouldn't fancy taking glue to the back of my phone.

nor me lol, i got a nice case ready for 2mrw when mine arrives.

yeh I just have not seen anything that I really like yet, I like keeping my device as sleek as posible, when I get phone I'll do a post of how I go with the back cover.

I've had the phone for about a week now. I love the back cover!
The texture makes it easier to hold and is nice to the touch. It also makes the back less prone to scratching which was apparently a problem with the original Galaxy S.

@ nik
Where are you going to get your phone from?

That's the stuff I used in my bathroom to frost my windows... I got it wet and slid it on.. used a squeegee and flattened it all out and 3 years later is is still sticking there.
The difference is that this is
1.) Clear
2.) Cut into the proper shape (you could do this yourself with some measuring but it saves hassle)
3.) the squeegee is probably smaller.
My bathroom windows are in a VERY humid environment... I have never had ANY peeling.
However I don't keep my bathroom windows in my pocket... so I don't know if the corners will peel up.
My main point is that for $24 of this "film" to cover a TINY phone... you can buy the same thing for $18 that would cover 10 phones... if the product works fantastic... the profit margin for them is HUGE. If it doesn't work... it's the biggest rip off ever.
See if Gila makes a clear one... get $18 worth and tinker away.

Since you've had the Fuze already... Is the shape exactly the same as the TP? It looks like sprints version is a little more round along the corners. I'd Like to go ahead and purchase one of these for the Fuze but don't want to have to send it back.

The only difference I noticed when seeing the 2 up next to each other was the shape of the speaker hole on the back, that might be enough to throw the protection off. Ask Raspster about it more, he had both the European and the Fuze at the same time, so he could tell you better than I could.
I got one, just to try it out.
Exactly as described above. Its a bit fiddly getting on but once on, it sticks very well.
Its great at sticking to flat surfaces, not so good on curves. And they don't even try and cover the corners on the device, which I would think are the places I'd want protected if I was to drop it.
The texture makes the back look very different from normal; its much nicer without the cover on. On the front, you can't really see the cover at all; edges are perfectly aligned with the phones edges.
The back and the front of the phone are covered very well. Sides not so great. Corners not at all. Front looks good. Back looks crap.
My opinion, its no way worth $24
just got mine on Friday exactly as it's described, protects almost every part of the phone with their cut out plastic shield, however as mentioned in earlier post... doesn't really cover the edges, all in all... does really stick and so far looks pretty ok with the exception of little bubbles within the shield (poor application technique)

Is it easy to peel it off without tearing the phone's original casing? Especially the back cover. I just ordered mine, hope it arrives soon.

I have used the Zagg's products (formerly Invisible Shield) on my 6800, 6700, wifes Centro and even custom ordered for my Pioneer 6800DVD in my car. I really like the product, the service is second to none... That said, I think since I have used the product and know how it performs in pockets, and how to install correctly (installed dozens of shields for myself, family and friends), I may try this new product.
Screen protection has always been great and flat surfaces (side) great as well but the corners usually give way, slide and start to bubble after about 4 months of heavy in and out of the pocket use.
This is a $24 experiment begging to happen.... now if Sprint would just release the damn phone!
I would also like to know this. Can it be removed again without leaving marks on the phone?
How scratch proof is it really?
Because of the lack of info on the site (still no video's on how to apply the thing, their forum is just about empty and they don't reply to customer questions...) they really don't seem to thrustworthy ...

I would get the one released by Zagg. They offer a lifetime replacement on all products and they will replace it no questions I know. Their stuff is nearly impossible to scratch and I TRIED just about everything to scratch it. All phones full covers are $25. Never had any bubbling issues with Zagg's products.
yes it can easily be removed without any mark left at all....I found the cover started to collect dusk a lot (it must be slightly sticky) so I removed it.

Trust me, I know oh too well the replacement process and have replaced and installed many over the last 5 years.
The fact that I know the Zagg product so well, makes the experiment more interesting. I know the Zagg stuff so well that I will know if this Clear Coat stands a chance AND since it's only $25... It might turn out to be junk, the company could not stand behind the guarantee BUT we'll see.
*Update
Just got my phone yesterday and I just ordered the Clear Coat. I'll install and do a little initial write up. I'll order the Zagg shield when it becomes available and do a comparison.
It's only money and it IS a $700 device.... (but I only paid $250 for it)
Stay tuned guys.
**Update
Just ordered a Zagg full body shield at 40% off as they just got them and were doing a Halloween special I guess. I should have the Cleat Coat on Mon/Tues and the Zagg will probably be here the week after. I think I'll install the Clear Coat first, use it for a week or so and then install the Zagg and do the same.

What a difference a case makes

My first g1 was the bronze model. Crappy keyboard, no case or skin and fugly looking but it was free. I spent a few days here, flashing roms, playing trying to decide if I wanted a G1 or get a mytouch. I decided to get a another g1.
Yesterday, bought a Black G1 and a black body glove snap on case. WOW, it looks sooo badass now. The white mytouch is sexy but mine looks like a serous business machine and all the ugly went away.

Here ya go, you might find it cheaper on buy.com but either way this is a good price for a sweet case.
edit: yea it adds some bulk but not to much, its like having the g1 in the puch it comes with sort of, maybe a little better then that even.

Yes, that's it. It does add some bulk but also makes the g1 look substantial. One of the problems I had with the g1 looks was it's protruding chin. The case takes all that away. Another advantage is with the plastic back off, it looks like you get get a larger battery in there, like that 2600 seido Inocell. In other words you may not have to use the extended back that comes with the battery. I don't have that battery yet, but it looks like it might fit just fine.
I like the texture on the case. Gives it some bling without it being too much, easier to grip because it's rubber. It looks like a stealthy beast.
Here's a video on that case.

I got that case. It adds alot of bulk to it. It only stayed on my phone for about a week.

yeah, I had the same problem, I felt like i was walking around with a brick in my pocket
I've been thru 3 of those things, the clips that hold it on the phone eventually fail... every single one... and the phone always falls out at the WORST time ( going up an escalator, getting in a very tall pickup, and climbing a 30ft ladder to hag our new t-mo sign at radioshack)
These cases typically do turn the g1 into a cement shoe.
As well, what's wrong with bronze? And the "chin", much maligned, is something I actually like on my phone
Hated the keyboard on the bronze.
I don't use a belt clip ever. Last 3 phone I used a belt clip on were lost and never found.
I came to the G1 from a BB curve with extended battery. I have them side by side right now and they are exactly the same thickness. Given the room left in the back of the case, I think I can put an extended battery inside this case and not gain more thickness.
To each his own, but size is relative. Given the wow factor, protection and the extended battery capabilities it looks like a good match for me.
Just tried it with YooBao battery, doesn't fix.
It certainly looked like it would, but it's shape is wrong there at the battery area.
Damn, I thought I had lucked out. Bought this case several months ago and ended up hating it because of the size. Then got the battery with the cover, and I didn't even think to try to try the Body Glove I had. Was all excited when I read this thread thinking I had lucked out with the combo of the two. Unfortunately, no go.
I was just looking at this just now. I wonder if you could take a little off the inside of the case where the belt clip attaches. In other words cut the felt then dremel out the plastic underneath. It looks like you might gain 1/8th in. tops.
I'm considering this battery. http://cgi.ebay.com/for-T-Mobile-G1...ash=item414863590f&_trksid=p4634.c0.m14.l1262
Yeah...couldnt stand this case either. Prolly woulda been cool but having the G1 caseless for a week made using the bodyglove case like stepping back in time.

Naked or covered???

I just bought online the invisibleSHIELD™ for my EVO (only the front cover).
Do you think guys it would be necessary to buy a rubber cover for the body?
Edit: i canceled my order and bought the full cover now, so i won't need the condom, lol
Nah. I don't think it really makes much of difference unless you're really worried about dropping it on hard surfaces. A rubber case will add a lot of bulk to a phone that's already pretty monstrous.
I will note, however, that my experience with InvisibleSHIELD's screen protectors have been less than stellar. It kinda gives the screen a grippy feeling. This makes it very hard to use pinch to zoom and stuff like that. Just my opinion...
ENJOY THE EVO!!
Depends on the person (oh by the way I'm sure their is already a thread about this, man your gonna get it) some people are clumsy and drop their $500 phones all the time. Me I take pretty good care of my device so I generally don't need one. With that said I have ordered a condom for this phone I got a silicon jelly whatever. Mainly because I was already ordering the screen protector and it wasn't a lot more to just drop that in the box.

A condom? lol
I may get one two, maybe a blue one.
I'm leaving mine totally naked. I may buy a screen protector, but I have yet to decide. Thankfully, HTC is a company that has realized the practicality of MATTE FINISHES. I cannot stand glossy, fingerprint and scratch magnet surfaces.
Hmm i hate having lil hairlines on the back of my device, due to laying it on a desk or so.
Im not scared of dropping it, but it depends on the grip of the device in my hands. if it feels like its going to slip out of my hand while im holding it. Then i might buy a silicone case like the one that came with the HTC HD2. if they have a case like that one.

Yeah, a condom. For "just-in-case accidents" ;D
If you're gonna get a case for such a massive touchscreen device, you really can't beat Otterbox. EVERY phone could benefit from an Otterbox case. As for screen protectors, just get a standard WriteRight package. They're wonderful things.
Seido option
I like this one by Seido:
http://www.seidioonline.com/category-s/4213.htm
I've never had one before.
Since the EVO is fairly large, Not sure how much more this would add to the large form factor.
Anyone had this:
http://www.seidioonline.com/product-p/csr3hev4-bk.htm
TIA...
I am getting the Innocase from Seido. The one without the belt clip attachment. Its only 1mm thick so thats not bad at all..
As far as those body skins. I would like to get one but they look like a major pain in the ass to put on and I wont have the patience for it cause it would have to be perfect.
Now if I could send it off somewhere to have professionally done then I would.
That otterbox looks pretty good. Substantial coverage with minimal "add-on" to the phone. Will consider that...see what they develop for the EVO (need kickstand hole, proper camera/LED/speakerphone holes). I'm just concerned about any additional add-on to the dimensions of the phone. It's huge as-is; doesn't need any more girth!
Also would be concerned about how much it makes it "stick" coming out of a pocket...
i just realized something about that otterbox i posted. the HD2 has physical buttons on the bottom, while the Evo has touch sensitive(if i remember correctly) so we would have to wait for an official Evo case. maybe coming soon?
I'm not too keen on cases, they add bulk to what are already big phones. My TP2 and the original TouchPro are thick with their qwerty keyboards.
I'm pretty careful with my phones, don't really have slippery hands. Only real accident I had with my TP2 is after about a week from purchase, I think I put my phone in the same pocket as my keys and out it came with a 1/4 inch scratch on the screen. I've been staring at it since.
Only accidents I ever really had with phones was with an old BB 7510. The belt clip was hard plastic, and it slipped out numerous times going up and down stairs. Pretty tough device though, the only thing that ever happened was the battery and cover would fly off...even after tumbling down cement staircases!
That's the one downside to new phones.

I have never been down with phone cases and screen protectors.
1. Similar to what the poster I quoted said, why would you want to make the device bigger than what it already is?
2. I think 99% of cases and screen protectors look stupid and nerdy. I usually think the phones I buy have visual appeal, and I don't know why anyone would want to cover it up. The EVO's exterior looks great.
3. I don't need to "baby" my phones. I don't really care if the screen gets scratched or if I drop the phone. I could give a ****. It it breaks or becomes that bad, I'll buy a new one.
The only reason I can agree with is when people want to have a case so they can belt clip the device or whatever. I like to carry phones in my pocket, but that's just me.
Totally agree with point number 2... IMO cases completely downgrade the look of a device; most are plain dorky. You can usually spot an iphone owner a mile away, as they typically have bedazzled/'gucci' (girls) or generic (guys) cases on them.
A lot of effort is put into the exterior design of these phones...why cover it up? Besides, I'd hate someone to confuse my EVO with a boring iphone that any joker can pickup for $97 at walmart, one aisle over from either diapers or anti-freeze.
This is the one i got today, let's see if its works...
http://www.zagg.com/invisibleshield/htc-evo-4g-cases-screen-protectors-covers-skins-shields.php
Right now my Evo is going bareback....
I'm waiting for my screen protector to come in, and will probably get an otterbox once they release it for the Evo.

I agree with the first two points, so I'm reluctant to get a case/screen protector. Unfortunately, I do care if my phone becomes scratched or if I drop it. I can't really afford to buy a new one!

Replacement battery cover

I hope these come out soon. I really dislike how slick the entire phone is. When trying to have a phone conversation, and trying to rest it on your shoulder, holding it between your shoulder and face, it slides right out...
Same here. TMo was suppose to start doing the custom printed covers, but they are slick as well. It was 100 degrees yesterday and sweat doesn't help when you're trying to silde it open one handed either. TMobile has a rubberized shell for it, but it was way too bulky.

Yeah, I meant to mention those "skins" too, I am not a fan of those. One of my praises for this phone was it's slim profile, and adding one of those skins would make it just that more bulky. I like the material on the back of the Droid.
I like the battery cover on the back of the original MyTouch 3g, other then the fact that it slides open way to easy...

Have y'all looked into eGrips. Might be worth it for now.
Well again, those I am not a fan of. First: I am not sure how those attach, and if it is simply a stick-on, I'd hate to have it leave a residue when you go to remove it. And since it's a cover on a cover, it starts increasing bulk. If someone would come out with a replacement cover, just in a different material, I'd be happy
Edit: I also don't want something that would make it a pain to slide in and out of my pocket... those super grippy type covers do just that. They're great at keeping them in place on a car dash, or on your shoulder, but it's likely going to turn your pocket inside out, leaving you open to being bum rushed when the change falls out of your pocket.

OH, which BTW, if you used Subsonic, now you can browser your server using the phone's browser since it has Flash support, no need for the Subsonic app Maybe I'll post that in the apps thread...
The phone is great but it is way to slippery.
I was thinking of maybe taping off parts of just the back cover and spraying on a product called Plasti Dip just to give it a thin rubber coating.

2. i started to pull off the front plastic and it seemed like the plastic screen cover was connected.. not sure if I want to mess with that... but it might look lame if the front doesnt match.
Possible anti-slide solutions...??
- some sort of stick on rubber tread that looks cool??Maybe if we find a cool piece of rubber tread that is made to stick on or we glue it one it could look cool and stop the damn phone from sliding.
p.s. my dream would be for someone to make a metal cover like the nexus (no i dont want a nexus I just like the finish that looks like an adults phone) with rubber tread lines built into it.. maybe I need to find a manufacturer. ..
I hate the slick back cover as well, i miss the cover on my G1 its the non-slick bio-hazard one. just the type of grip makes it great to slide in and out of pocket, less scratches, easier keyboard slide out.
Its too glossy for my taste i have to wipe the whole phone when im done with it for the night to make sure the finger prints are gone, gets annoying.
i'm looking for a nice matte cover as well, i hate the slickness(i dropped my phone because it slid out of my pocket). worst case scenario i might grab a replacement black one and sand it to a matte texture.
I am about to spray it with a satin black car trim spray... and if that doesn't work the next step will be a rubberized spray I think... Will post if it doesn't look like complete garbage lol
Well I hate to get ahead of myself but here is my rubber coated battery cover.. I am still waiting so patiently for it to completely dry. If what I used works then I will post a photo how to . Hang in there!

What product did you use on that, and did you tape off the holes or just poke them out with a toothpick type device?

make the phone heavier?

love the phone, but it feels TOO light and too cheap...
can you guys think of any way to make the phone heaver, but not make it fatter lol?

where did you hear that?
The heavier you make it the more weight comes down on it when and if you drop it the glass its strong but not indestructible
Still flashing , thanks to odin & tw
The Stealthguards "full body" screen protector adds just enough heft to the phone to make it feel nice in the hand. It's actually the only reason I keep it on. It only adds a few grams, but it's enough to make the phone feel not-so-cheap.
My question is "WHY?"
Light and cheap is two different things.

If anyone installs this, I'd be interested to hear if it affects the GPS antenna...or maybe it can't get worse!
I use a "mesh" cover available in multiple colors. They add just enough weight and thickness to overcome the "thin and light" feeling in larger hands.
There are cheap ones for a couple bucks and official "Galaxy S" ones that cost US$10-15.
I use the official one (black) and it does the job.
Some like the feel of the extended battery packs...

The cases that T-Mobile had at launch add a substantial amount of weight. It will make it thicker though... But, it's protected and heavier.
If I were you id get this case http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=772826 its cheap and it makes the phone heavier and its a great case
I bought the Body Glove chrome/flex case when i got the device and love it. Has added substantial thickness and heft without making it pocket heavy. It has a fully removable clip that rotates and has an adjustable kickstand that works well in either vertical or landscape mode. Also the clip acts as an excellent finger hold for when gaming or typing along with a gungrip/no slip style rubber backing plate.
Another bonus is it comes with a blank so you can completely remove clip and the stud it connects to, leaving the back flush.
Also google it. It does look good and definitely provides protection. I like how the chrome bezel is high enough to protect the screen if you put/drop it screen down, yet thin enough it doesnt get in the way.
All in all I give the case a 5/5 star rating.
It's nice for the phone to be heavier because if you're in the store and put it down you notice when you're walking away that your phone isn't in you hand if you've been fumbling bags, etc. and got a phone call while shopping. Like my HD2. There's no way I could have forgotten that thing when I had it, because of the weight. It's like walking out of the house without a ball cap. You never really think about it when it's there, but when it isn't you know it.
The vibrant does feel extremely cheap and way too light IMO without a cover on it. It's just too easy to lose or forget. Not to mention the plastic feels yucky if it's hot outside or you've been doing something that makes your hands perspire.
So I got a body glove.
HD2 was different, cause of the Aluminum. Didn't want or need a case for it.
Add some rocks to the charm loop.

Tape some lead weights to the back of it but i dont see where that would make it feel more pricey.
I love the weight of my phone and with a case on it, it feels solid.

I used lead tape strips on my racket when I played tennis. You could put that stuff on the inside of the battery cover.

Yes. We've concluded that the weight with a case is fine.
The weight and feel of the phone without a case is not.
Well, I guess some people can dig it.
I didn't have a problem with my Aria or HD2. Those phones felt solid in my hand without a case.
The Vibrant doesn't. Feels like it could fall apart, so I didn't leave the store without a case when I got it.
And when I had to get a new one because of my first one getting snatched, I had the case waiting for it when it came in the mail
