where did you hear that?

The heavier you make it the more weight comes down on it when and if you drop it the glass its strong but not indestructible
Still flashing , thanks to odin & tw

The Stealthguards "full body" screen protector adds just enough heft to the phone to make it feel nice in the hand. It's actually the only reason I keep it on. It only adds a few grams, but it's enough to make the phone feel not-so-cheap.

My question is "WHY?"
Light and cheap is two different things.

If anyone installs this, I'd be interested to hear if it affects the GPS antenna...or maybe it can't get worse!

I use a "mesh" cover available in multiple colors. They add just enough weight and thickness to overcome the "thin and light" feeling in larger hands.
There are cheap ones for a couple bucks and official "Galaxy S" ones that cost US$10-15.
I use the official one (black) and it does the job.

Some like the feel of the extended battery packs...

The cases that T-Mobile had at launch add a substantial amount of weight. It will make it thicker though... But, it's protected and heavier.

If I were you id get this case http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=772826 its cheap and it makes the phone heavier and its a great case

I bought the Body Glove chrome/flex case when i got the device and love it. Has added substantial thickness and heft without making it pocket heavy. It has a fully removable clip that rotates and has an adjustable kickstand that works well in either vertical or landscape mode. Also the clip acts as an excellent finger hold for when gaming or typing along with a gungrip/no slip style rubber backing plate.
Another bonus is it comes with a blank so you can completely remove clip and the stud it connects to, leaving the back flush.
Also google it. It does look good and definitely provides protection. I like how the chrome bezel is high enough to protect the screen if you put/drop it screen down, yet thin enough it doesnt get in the way.
All in all I give the case a 5/5 star rating.

It's nice for the phone to be heavier because if you're in the store and put it down you notice when you're walking away that your phone isn't in you hand if you've been fumbling bags, etc. and got a phone call while shopping. Like my HD2. There's no way I could have forgotten that thing when I had it, because of the weight. It's like walking out of the house without a ball cap. You never really think about it when it's there, but when it isn't you know it.
The vibrant does feel extremely cheap and way too light IMO without a cover on it. It's just too easy to lose or forget. Not to mention the plastic feels yucky if it's hot outside or you've been doing something that makes your hands perspire.
So I got a body glove.
HD2 was different, cause of the Aluminum. Didn't want or need a case for it.

Add some rocks to the charm loop.

Tape some lead weights to the back of it but i dont see where that would make it feel more pricey.

I used lead tape strips on my racket when I played tennis. You could put that stuff on the inside of the battery cover.

Yes. We've concluded that the weight with a case is fine.
The weight and feel of the phone without a case is not.
Well, I guess some people can dig it.
I didn't have a problem with my Aria or HD2. Those phones felt solid in my hand without a case.
The Vibrant doesn't. Feels like it could fall apart, so I didn't leave the store without a case when I got it.
And when I had to get a new one because of my first one getting snatched, I had the case waiting for it when it came in the mail

Naked or covered???

I just bought online the invisibleSHIELD™ for my EVO (only the front cover).
Do you think guys it would be necessary to buy a rubber cover for the body?
Edit: i canceled my order and bought the full cover now, so i won't need the condom, lol
Nah. I don't think it really makes much of difference unless you're really worried about dropping it on hard surfaces. A rubber case will add a lot of bulk to a phone that's already pretty monstrous.
I will note, however, that my experience with InvisibleSHIELD's screen protectors have been less than stellar. It kinda gives the screen a grippy feeling. This makes it very hard to use pinch to zoom and stuff like that. Just my opinion...
ENJOY THE EVO!!
Depends on the person (oh by the way I'm sure their is already a thread about this, man your gonna get it) some people are clumsy and drop their $500 phones all the time. Me I take pretty good care of my device so I generally don't need one. With that said I have ordered a condom for this phone I got a silicon jelly whatever. Mainly because I was already ordering the screen protector and it wasn't a lot more to just drop that in the box.

I may get one two, maybe a blue one.
I'm leaving mine totally naked. I may buy a screen protector, but I have yet to decide. Thankfully, HTC is a company that has realized the practicality of MATTE FINISHES. I cannot stand glossy, fingerprint and scratch magnet surfaces.
Hmm i hate having lil hairlines on the back of my device, due to laying it on a desk or so.
Im not scared of dropping it, but it depends on the grip of the device in my hands. if it feels like its going to slip out of my hand while im holding it. Then i might buy a silicone case like the one that came with the HTC HD2. if they have a case like that one.
hey question. all the iBoy's are running around with otterbox cases on their "phones" is the HTC HD2 the same form-factor as the evo?

Yeah, a condom. For "just-in-case accidents" ;D
If you're gonna get a case for such a massive touchscreen device, you really can't beat Otterbox. EVERY phone could benefit from an Otterbox case. As for screen protectors, just get a standard WriteRight package. They're wonderful things.
Seido option
I like this one by Seido:
http://www.seidioonline.com/category-s/4213.htm
I've never had one before.
Since the EVO is fairly large, Not sure how much more this would add to the large form factor.
Anyone had this:
http://www.seidioonline.com/product-p/csr3hev4-bk.htm
TIA...
I am getting the Innocase from Seido. The one without the belt clip attachment. Its only 1mm thick so thats not bad at all..
As far as those body skins. I would like to get one but they look like a major pain in the ass to put on and I wont have the patience for it cause it would have to be perfect.
Now if I could send it off somewhere to have professionally done then I would.
That otterbox looks pretty good. Substantial coverage with minimal "add-on" to the phone. Will consider that...see what they develop for the EVO (need kickstand hole, proper camera/LED/speakerphone holes). I'm just concerned about any additional add-on to the dimensions of the phone. It's huge as-is; doesn't need any more girth!
Also would be concerned about how much it makes it "stick" coming out of a pocket...
i just realized something about that otterbox i posted. the HD2 has physical buttons on the bottom, while the Evo has touch sensitive(if i remember correctly) so we would have to wait for an official Evo case. maybe coming soon?
I'm not too keen on cases, they add bulk to what are already big phones. My TP2 and the original TouchPro are thick with their qwerty keyboards.
I'm pretty careful with my phones, don't really have slippery hands. Only real accident I had with my TP2 is after about a week from purchase, I think I put my phone in the same pocket as my keys and out it came with a 1/4 inch scratch on the screen. I've been staring at it since.
Only accidents I ever really had with phones was with an old BB 7510. The belt clip was hard plastic, and it slipped out numerous times going up and down stairs. Pretty tough device though, the only thing that ever happened was the battery and cover would fly off...even after tumbling down cement staircases!
That's the one downside to new phones.

I have never been down with phone cases and screen protectors.
1. Similar to what the poster I quoted said, why would you want to make the device bigger than what it already is?
2. I think 99% of cases and screen protectors look stupid and nerdy. I usually think the phones I buy have visual appeal, and I don't know why anyone would want to cover it up. The EVO's exterior looks great.
3. I don't need to "baby" my phones. I don't really care if the screen gets scratched or if I drop the phone. I could give a ****. It it breaks or becomes that bad, I'll buy a new one.
The only reason I can agree with is when people want to have a case so they can belt clip the device or whatever. I like to carry phones in my pocket, but that's just me.
Totally agree with point number 2... IMO cases completely downgrade the look of a device; most are plain dorky. You can usually spot an iphone owner a mile away, as they typically have bedazzled/'gucci' (girls) or generic (guys) cases on them.
A lot of effort is put into the exterior design of these phones...why cover it up? Besides, I'd hate someone to confuse my EVO with a boring iphone that any joker can pickup for $97 at walmart, one aisle over from either diapers or anti-freeze.
This is the one i got today, let's see if its works...
http://www.zagg.com/invisibleshield/htc-evo-4g-cases-screen-protectors-covers-skins-shields.php
Right now my Evo is going bareback....
I'm waiting for my screen protector to come in, and will probably get an otterbox once they release it for the Evo.

People complaining about "lightness" & "cheap feeling" of phone
I dont get it. Sure its incredibly light but it doesnt feel cheap at all. Very solid and the fact that its made mostly out of plastic. I love it...
I just wish the plastic had more grip, its too slippy as is. But I agree is does not feel cheap in any way.
Same here. This is my first touchscreen and it actually seems like it has a good heft to me. I think those who say it's "light" are used to phones that weigh considerably more so they're more apt to notice a difference.
I never thought the phone was looking cheap The gel case I got from tmo adds to the weight, and actually the phone benefits from it IMHO
I actually like the slickness. Slides in and out of my pocket with zero effort. But this phone in no way feels cheap.

I agree with all the phone doesn't feel cheap to me and I love how light it is!!
I'm glad I'm not the only one who feels this way. Its light, but not cheap light, it feels well built. Its made mostly of plastic, but I didn't expect anything else.the plastic seems durable to me when removing the battery cover. Hell, if it was made of metal like many people want I think it would be way too heavy.

Love the thinness and lightness but every time someone calls me, the phone makes a rattling sound when vibrate is turned on.
Even after removing the back cover, it still rattles.
Its only after i grab the phone that the rattling stops.
That definitely gives an impression that its cheaply built.

i got the vibrant to replace my hd2 cuz winmo just wasn't doing it for me.. its much lighter and it looks nice.. but when I look at it, I can't help but think what it will look like 6 months down the road. the i see the paint on the shiny metal band coming off, i see the plastic clips on the back cover breaking, i see the plastic cracking all around. I know a good case will hide this, but just as with any nice purchase, i want it looking as new as possible for as long as possible, and I just don't see that happening with this plastic phone.

After using an N1 or just about any E-series (metal) Nokia, the Vibrant feels incredibly cheap. Heck, even the oldest iPhone makes it look cheap, except for the screen.
It's not as bad as the G1, but I knew about the build quality going in...as long as the hardware works I can deal with the sub-par packaging and finish.

There's nothing wrong with light, as long as it's built well. As a matter of fact, I prefer light. My N900 was heavy and bulky; the Vibrant is so much more pocketable.
A metal backplate without plastic over the antennas will cause us nothing but signal issues in weak areas. It would have to be like the iPhone but with an extra plastic cutout for the BT/WiFI/GPS antenna's that are at the top of the phone to the right.
Anyway I agree, I had a CLIQ that was all plastic before I got the Vibrant and it did feel extremely solid however I still have confidence in my Vibrant. It's just the lightness that throws people off coming from an HTC or Motorola brick.
I think the look and feel of the phone is great. It does not feel cheap or flimsy at all. I will take a sturdy light plastic phone over a heave metal phone any day.

[CLOSED/Q] Thickness

About how thick is the g2 going to be in comparison to the nexus one and g1? already know its like 5 mm thicker than iphone 4.
Id say about a quarter more than the nexus, think of it like the back is as thick as the camera bubble.
barely thinner then the slide

Yes, is not much thicker in absolute numbers, but it feels - for me thinkness matters.
Reporters say it's actually not that thick. It looked a little thick to me. I'd rather take a phone with excellent build quality and a little bulk over a thin phone made of plastic.
looked kind of chunky in the vid but i guess time will tell.
According to the dimensions on HTC's website, the G2 is about 3mm thinner than the G1. That seems really great for a QWERTY phone, if you ask me.
EDIT: Here are the actual numbers for thickness:
G1/Dream: 17.1mm
Nexus One: 11.5mm
G2: 14.1mm

For comparison, here are thickness numbers for a few other QWERTY slider phones:
Touch Pro 2: 17.8mm
G1: 17.1mm
Samsung Moment: 16mm
Motorola Cliq: 15.6mm
Motorola Backflip: 15.3mm
MyTouch Slide: 15.2mm
G2: 14.1mm
Samsung Epic: 14mm
Motorola Droid: 13.7mm
So the G2 is just a hair thicker than the original Droid, which was a very thin phone, considering it had a full keyboard. These numbers kind of make the G1 look like a brick, don't they? I never thought of mine as that thick until I look at these numbers all side by side.

aluminum isnt the most durable material in the world. it tends to dent pretty easy from a fall so a case could help that.
time will tell if it needs a case, but because of the interesting "slider" cases could be hard to come by, t-mo plans on having a few cases on hand but i don't usually like the cases they have, i will probably ghost armor this phone like i did my slide(although this one will get it right away)
i thought only part of the back was brushed aluminum. it also dents and scratches pretty easily hence the possible need for a bse? anyway slider cases suck. a lot. pretty thick as well and i want this phone to fit in my pocket.

ghost armor any good? always heard people going with bse given its relatively low cost and decent preformance.
I like it, had it done on the mytouch, and my mytouch slide, it's a little thick so most cases don't fit right if you do the whole phone, but deffinately is scratch-proof. I pay 25 for it and with the lifetime warranty it's worth it in my mind.
I will say though that if you are a fan of swype then you will have to get used to the material on the screen for a bit as it doesn't feel quite as nice as the screen does but that's the price to pay for protection in my book.

[Q] Maximum protection cases for Defy?

One of the main reasons I picked the defy was it's ruggedness, because I do potentially dangerous sports, but obviously there are limits to that ruggedness, and if you take a fall or something likely to break the phone, it may well have broken you - and a working phone comes in kind of handy at that point
So... with that in mind, can anyone recommend any decent hard cases? I thinking more along the lines of a hard pouch you slip it into, but may consider flip open ones or something that allows easy access to the touchscreen if it is tough enough.
Waterproofing not really an issue since the defy should be able to handle any streams or such I may fall into anyway.

Otterbox Commuter Case
Agreed on the Commuter Series. I expect although that it is going to make the phone much phatter than that it already is.
I work as an audio engineer at some places (school, local bars), which means I carry lots and lots of big flightcases. And I've to be kept in the loop. My last phone, an LG KS-20 died this way. As I was carrying a big flightcase, a corner tapped the LCD through my jeans, destroying it. So many appointments and numbers lost!
Note: I haven't got my Defy yet, I'm working things out on getting it.
i'm selling mine. dont like my phone being so bulky because i always put it in my pants pocket.
if you're interested, pm me.
I was using one of these http://www.amazon.co.uk/Amzer-Silic...2OI6/ref=sr_1_8?ie=UTF8&qid=1303117510&sr=8-8 but it added too much bulk and it wasn't a particularly good fit even if it did offer decent protection.
I now use one of these http://www.amazon.co.uk/iTALKonline...5F3S/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1303117510&sr=8-1 and it is a good tight fit and it doesn't bulk the phone up very much at all, my defy certainly feels better in my hand now being a bit heavier and a bit grippier, with this case i can slip it in and out of my jeans pocket without it getting stuck as well.

I want to use a special case, but i'm wandering if it has some problems with cooling this way. If i play Dungeon Defenders for example, the phone gets pretty hot, and with a case i'm afraid it will get even hotter, because i'm not sure how the heat will be transfered.
I got a tpu case from ebay and some silicon ones.
The tpu is great but the silicon were really hard to get in and out of the pocket.
I recommend the tpu with a red thing on the back, which you can rip out and it slides well and also fits very well on tue device.

I've had the Ottterbox case for months now. Everytime I take the case off for some reason it drives me nuts now because the phone just feels too small. I work in a precast concrete plant and end up getting pretty dirty by the end of the day. Thankfully this phone stays a lot cleaner now then other phones I had that I didn't have the Otterbox case.

Case, Bumper or Naked?

I'm still waiting on my "being Built" Moto Maker X Pure. Bamboo and black.
This phone having such customization potential, I'm curious what the majority of you are doing about cases. I've always used a case, but I want to show of my wood back and color choices.. and personally, I'm kind of hoping that it's tough enough to risk using naked daily.
What do you think?
Oh, and I'm likely to keep this for a long time and reselling is not something I'm worried about.
I would go with a clear case, still shows the wood and protects the phone.
I'm either going to get a transparent/translucent case or a good quality bumper. I ended up going for the soft back rather than the leather so I'm more likely to get the case.
Personally, wouldn't keep the phone naked. At the very least, use the provided bumper for some sort of protection.

Right now I'm just using the included bumper and a clear skin on the back. It works, but I'll probably move to a clear case once more become available. The clear skin looks fairly good, but it does make the bamboo look a little too shiny.

Where did you get the clear skin for the rear? How does it hold up on the curves of the device?

Xtremeguard... They're having like a 90% off sale. Its OK. Doesn't cover from edge to edge...which is fine, otherwise the bumper would probably peel it off. It will protect it from scratches for now though. Adds a little grip, but not as much as I had hoped.

Cool. Thanks for the info and the quick reply.
Awesome, thank you all for the replies. I keep feeling like I won't enjoy the phone unless it's naked, but I know you're right about protection. I may do a clear case... or a rubber bumper when more are released. I saw this one from another post in a different forum: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0154AQ3QK...colid=MDU2I2LQJJCF&coliid=INJ1ZBZYSLR2L&psc=1 looks decent.

I had that case when I had my Nexus 6. I loved it. Felt great in the hand. That's what I was thinking of going with.

Ya, if I remember correctly it was a little difficult on the N6 but not terrible. I'd think it'd be OK on this phone.
I bought this one
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B012Y81GXA?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00
It sais to preorder but i ordered it and it came in the mail already, dont know if they only made a few or something, you could always email the seller and ask.
Im extremely impressed with it. I bought it as a cheap case to put on till i have more options. My only criticism was that it was a little loose on the sides, so what did i do ? I boiled it! thats right, i looked it up online and people boil tpu cases to shrink them a little. I boiled it in water for 3 minutes. it fits alot more snug now, still not perfect but close enough
I went with an otterbox so my kids dont break my phone
FYI - I've had the included "bumper" on my MXPE almost continuously since I received it.
I removed the bumper yesterday and, to my dismay, found nicks/pits in the longer metal edges of the phone. It looks like the anodized coating has worn away to show the brighter metal beneath (I have the dark grey/titanium metal color). I also noticed upon receipt that there was a slight chip in the finish at the edge of the SIM card door.
Fortunately my MotoMaker re-do unit is on its way to me (decided to go with wood instead of soft-touch), but I'm somewhat disappointed with the robustness of the metal finish. I almost wonder if this is why the "bumper" was packaged with the phone - though it looks like it might've done more harm than good by trapping scratchy debris.
Bottom line - I usually carry my phone naked except with a glass screen protector, but I'm wondering if this MXPE is going to need at least an edge bumper.
(I haven't fully scoured the forums to see if this is a known problem, but I certainly hope the finish on my re-do unit is more durable.)
I'm going naked, I have moto care so I think I will go naked with this phone. So often cases seem to cause more wear than without so I will keep it "pure"

Im trying that too, but I am only a month in and I already am seeing spots on the back where it seems that the varnishing is being removed? Have you noticed this yourself?
See-through case, fits like a glove - not loose. The best combination for me personally, the phone is still 100% visible but protected to some degree. Also I find soft silicone cases add more grip to what would otherwise be a slippery phone.
I-blason clear case from Amazon. Very happy with it.

I'm currently using the i-blason clear case as well, and I'll second it as good option. I had decent drop onto a hard surface over the weekend, and the phone was no worse for the wear. I also have the Casemate naked tough case coming as well, which should be even better. I'm someone that likes to have a variety of cases (although with this phone I'm probably going to stick with clear ones), so I will probably end up getting a bumper or two as well. I don't think the included bumper is quite as bad as a lot of people said it was, but it fits kind of loose and I can see it breaking with a good drop. As much as I enjoy going naked with the phone, I didn't get Moto care, and the wooden back I got is fairly slippery, and I don't trust myself not drop it occasionally.
I have noticed that the clear bumper that came with the phone has started to scratch the very edges of the rounded glass. I'm going naked now. I don't use screen protectors and generally don't use cases or bumpers. I've never had a problem with scratching my devices. I also never resell my phones (I usually gift them to family members, friends, etc.), so slight scratches aren't a deal breaker for me.
I love this phone in its bare form :good:
