Just used the manualnooter this morning and found it very easy to use rooting 1.2. Some issues installing certain apps (Alkido and Angry Birds for me) but everythng else reinstalled fine. Had to use the standard "Market Reset" but after that all was good.
To be sure, I would flash back to stock (un-rooted) then sideload the 1.2 update. Only sure way to know you're fresh IMHO.

Z4root on Bell JK4, Froyo 2.2

Hey everyone,
I flashed my SGS i9000m to 2.2 JK4 through using Kie last night. When I tried to use z4root to root the phone temporarily, the application crashed (no damage to the phone, since i can factory reset and wipe). However, from my understanding this app will work on 99% of the phone. So I'm curious and see if any other Bell who upgrade to JK4 have similar problem.
oh, another problem. I dont know why my clock on my SMS is screwed up. Like if you sent me a sms right now, the phone would display it was sent 6 hours ago. anyone know how to fix this ?
Thanks in advance everyone.

It has been said that z4root is not working on the jk4 firmware. RyanZA should be made aware of this.
As for your issue with texts and the timestamp... Are you using Bell or are you unlocked on a different provider?
If your not on Bell you need to install an app from the market that will fix this for you but im not sure what its called...

Thanks yiannisthegreek,
Yea. now i am pretty sure Z4root doesn't work on Jk4. So, so for those who wants to root their phone by Z4root, just wait until RyanZA comes out with a newer update.
and yea, im using FIDO at the moment. Anyone know what is the app for fixing timestamp called ?
sms time fix
z4root isn't working but I was wondering if installing busybox through titanium backup app would unroot the phone. I was able to restore my applications through titanium backup after installing busybox and restoring app does require a root so.... does it count as an unroot?
I'm with bell and z4root with 2.2 JK4 does not work for me either. Crashes after second screen and leaves device in unstable state. However, just rebooting phone is enough. (no factory reset needed).
z4root, JK4
Same here, Bell Vibrant, z4root does not work with JK4 (reboot and phone is OK).

Very unlikely.... It is no worse than installing some applications, mostly command-line tools (su, busybox).
This method was so quick and easy. Thanks for the suggestion guys/gals.

to root or not to root? Euro 3g Xoom

Hi guys!
I dont know if its better to root my xoom (so I can use sd, better kernel, etc...) or to wait the official 3.1 euro update (when it will be available????) before doing the root
any suggestion will be appreciated...
thx!
Well I guess sd card support/speed enhancements isn't worth it or you would have rooted already.
Hi,
I rooted mine and put the 3.1 US update on following the 3g in five steps method. I can tell you that along with the Tiamat kernel is like a new device, so much quicker and smoother.
the only thing i see against doing the us 3.1 update is you get the us market place in which u lose the eu apps since its all regional. but apart from that its the best thing ive done to my xoom
True but you can get everything through the web market.
3.1 ? when ?
hi,
i have rooted my 3g uk xoom and im glad i did so as i always require root and always will require root !
however - i have not yet upgraded to 3.1 because i feel the ",,in 5 steps " method seems to be a little inconsistent, some folk reporting 3g issues etc.
i so badly want 3.1 but im just hoping motorola do the right thing and release it or at least give us a release date, i can even wait a month or 2 if i know its on the way.
so if your reading this and you are in the uk and you have used the ",,,in 5 steps" method please share your findings, is 3g working well, do you get 'E' or 'H' or '3G' or whatever?>?
thanks.
ps- come on Moto' where the heck is the euro 3.1 update ?? news please ??
root, next question haha

I am now updated on 3.1, and I can only say, hell yeah. If you don,t root it, no point using it.
A different view. Is like you go into a library computer where all things are locked down. You can only do what they tell you. What you want is administrator access where you use full potential out of it...

Guys; I've posted elsewhere, but you look like you've probably done what I've asked about. Can I ask for a link to the 5 steps method? (I've searched everywhere and I'm now more confused than when I started.) Have any of you tried tiamat with 3.0.1 in order to get cifs or sd card support? Success? Or did you use another method altogether?
Cheers for any answers!!
EDIT: seen the link to the 5 step method - however - anyone used tiamat with it?

[Q] Which ROM is best for tethering

Hey all:
I just got a G Tablet a couple of weeks back and I put Vegan 5.1 on it. I don't have a smart phone but am getting one. I think the LG GT540 Optimus is the one I am going with. I have taken a quick look at the how to's for this phone and I noticed a how to for something called Eclaire 2.1 and a different thread for "custom 2.1/2.2/2.3". Which one should I go with. Do you know if either would allow me to tether with my G tab? thanks in advance
If you're really interested in tethering, better you buy Optimus One (P500) as it has tethering support in its stock ROM itself. Considering GT540, Mur4ik has already done with Wifi tethering. If you won't mind waiting for perfectly working tethering, then you can have GT540.
But I won't recommend it if you are just interested in tethering. Rather buy any phone that has Official 2.2/2.3 support.
Some recommendations like LG Optimus One, HTC Wildfire, Samsung Galaxy 3 (they both are upgradeable to 2.2).
thank you..
Can't really find your 3 recommendations at a similar price point as the GT540. Are you saying if i put the 2.1 eclaire and root the phone, tethering isn't currently working?
if you want a cheap android phone get the gt540 and upgrade it to the latest CM7 build that has WiFi tether support enabled and if you do get it make a swap partition on the sd card because i am making a softmod rom and it will have a few tweaks included for performance speed and battery
Ok. Just bought it. Partitioned many internal and external drives using windows but never done an sd through android. I'm sure its not so bad. Are the instructions for that cm7 on the forums some where? Thnx for the reply
yeah look at the how to thread in the dev section. it will help you mod your phone.

I read somewhere that you should upgrade from 2.1 to 2.2, then to 2.3. Is this true or can i go from 2.1 to 2.3 directly?
Also. I see a video on how to install cm7. What would be the prereqs, install fastboot and root the phone or?
If you want I can remote control your PC tomorrow to upgrade your phone for you?
appreciate it!!! but I actually get more enjoyment learning and performing this stuff than I do actually using the phone. Let me give it a try, if i can't I'll let you know. Haven't got the phone yet either. It will be shipped over the next few days or so
no problem just take the time to study the guides while the phone is being shipped.

Been reading some and there is a lot of info. I have a question. Can I just follow the instructions provided here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=12898827&postcount=3 , going to 2.1, 2.2 and so on(can i go to CM7 directly)?
or is there anything else needed to be done too, like rooting etc?
all you need to do is flash a fastboot 2.1 rom then boot into fastboot and direct flash to cm7 if you want.

Thanks for the infos. I'll try them
Any rom that supports tethering should do.
I'd recommend 2.1 with Quarx kernel

Hey All: Got the phone yesterday. I think I installed everything last night. Had some issues, though I bricked the phone a few times.
There is one weird thing. When I shutdown the phone. I press power to restart, it does this quick vibrate, then does nothing for like 30 secs, this is where i thought he phone was messed, but then it starts up. not sure what's up?
One more quick thing, how do you get into recovery mode, cause I think i need to do one of those factory resets after install right? thanx

[Q] Rooted GB Rom - still got update notice

I rooted via gfree method some time ago. Now I'm running the rooted GB image available here. I've also already flashed the latest radio provided by T-Mobile (from the radios thread in the dev forum). This morning I got an update message from T-Mobile.
Will it automatically apply if I download it. I'm assuming it is nothing I'd want but it'd be nice to see what it is and try to figure out why it'd be getting pushed to me? Or maybe it is coming from HTC. Anyway, worried that selecting it will cause a download and unroot my phone.
I wouldnt recommend accepting it. It will unroot your phone!
Sent from my HTC Glacier using xda premium
It likely won't install anyway. My wife had my phone when the update notification came though and tried to install it, but it wouldn't go.
She handed the phone back to me with a scary triangle exclamation mark thing on the screen (Is there a proper name for that?).
Anyway, there is an error when you try to install and it won't go, so it's pointless to try either way.
I deleted it and am looking to install a rooted updated version of stock GB.
Thanks much folks. That was pretty much what I thought.
Yea, this happened on my dad's phone.
All you have to do is download this rom: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1384791
Then make a backup of your current stock GB rom in recovery, then full wipe, flash the updated rom, and then restore data from your recovery backup.
Did this on my dad's phone a few days ago and it's working fine.

NEED HELP! I rooted my phone, but I can't install a custom ROM in it so I wanna undo!

I have HTC Mytouch 4g, it was on gingerbread, and I downgraded it to froyo so that I can root it. Then after i rooted it, I tried to install the Android_Revolution HD on it but I got stuck on the stage where I need to install the ROM. When I hit apply update.zip, it just fails. So I just stopped trying. Then when I was trying to install apps from google play store, it wouldn't let me install any apps, it says no connection. It's been annoying, and now I can't even download apps. So I decided I just want to undo all the rooting and downgrading, is that possible? Can someone help me or link me the guide/steps on how to just set my phone back to stock ROM and unroot it. ?
There is a root/unroot guide stickied in the dev section.
Amazing that you would do all that work and then give up. What recovery are you using?
Ordered my Nexus 4 on the 13th. Still waiting.
You're not supposed to click hit the part with apply update.zip, you're supposed to go down to where it says choose zip from SD card.
Choose SD card from zip select ROM then flash.

Thanks everyone for the help. I finally got it working, I installed the Royal Ginger 3.0 ROM on my htc mytouch 4g, and it's so smooth and fast.
Way better than the stock mytouch 4g lol. Now I'm thinking about unrooting the device following the steps on this link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=924923
Also, I wonder if there's a stable, smooth, and fast ROM that is already out for the Samsung Galaxy SIII. I'm thinking about rooting my new phone and installing a custom ROM on it.

If you're thinking of selling it or keeping it, I'd suggest leaving it rooted. Either way, it's better. Only thing I'd worry about is if a kid was going to use it.

Slow Down and Take a Breath.
If you ran into a simple mistake like "update.zip" on the S3, there isn't a vast library with every unbrick method like the MT4G. If you're that close to upgrading, perfect your flashing skills on a phone that you don't have to live with for the next two years. If you brick this phone, you can always go into the store with "This thing finally quit on me. Gimme Sammy 3." It's also a wonderful chance to try out every ROM out there.
Just my two dimes and a nickle.
