1.83 Data Speed Reporting - Atrix 4G General

Now that the official patch is rolling out or leaked or whatever you want to call it, I figured it would be appropriate to start this.
Just post some results from speedtest.net and your location, as well as the network type it declares you being connected to in the test result (HSPA, HSPDA, etc). Remember, experiments aren't accurate unless you have multiple trials ;D
Here's mine:
Location: Portland, OR
Before update on HSPDA:

}
After update:
Networks on after update tests:
HSPA

I also did some testing with mobile hotspot enabled doing speakeasy on my Cr48:
Down Up
2589 341
3351 788
801 783
556 207
2321 150
299 381
435 389
There's definitely an improvement over wireless, but it still is a bit inconsistent at times. There must be some bug with mobile hotspot or something though, cause those are pretty gross fluctuations :<
These were all done at my home, so I'll try and test it out in some other locations in a bit.

Does your *#*#4636#*#* under phone info and data say HSPA?
Because Im on 1.83 and it says HSDPA

Hey KF, what screen shot app are you using?

Yep, it's HSPA. Perhaps they simply don't have HSPA in your area? Now that I review the Speedtest results however, I'm noticing that the data type switched between HSPA and "UMTS".
In order with my second set of results:
HSPA
UMTS
UMTS
HSPA
HSPA
HSPA
I'm just using the "Screen Grabber" that the guy made for the Atrix here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1009451

I had flashed the HSPA mod on 1.57 and it worked so maybe I need to reflash to stock and wait for the OTA one

Off topic, but thanks for that! I'm what you could call a rookie as can't sideload yet.

You should be able to install it via adb and it should work just fine
I noticed that for some reason the server had defaulted to Idaho, so here are some more results from a Portland server:

You know, this is such a sad way to serve their consumers, directly messing with the single most important factor that enriches user experience. When speeds drops like that and latency spikes, QoS is severly degraded, and after the update that should fix the issue, AT&T is of course not even addressing HSUPA... Makes me question if it's worth buying such a powerful phone knowing the network is completely managed by losers...
Here is what iPhone 4 users with non HSPA+ phones get regularly in NYC

Yikes, the Atrix and ATT have some serious catching up to do!

The only reason I came back to At&t was this phone. Probably should have stuck with Verizon...

4g Upload Speed?

As far as I can tell from reading around, WIMAX upload speeds are actually slower than that of EVDO speeds. In the age of sharing so much media including high-def pics and vids, doesn't this seem like a step back?

I don't see how 1-1.5mpbs up is slower than 100-300kbps up...
I guess i was looking at the peak speeds. My bad. It shows 1.8 Mbps peak upload for EVDO rev. a

And if nobody is using the tower....
I get about 2.5mbps down 800kbps up on my Hero, and I live in a VERY good area as far as data speeds go.
Sprint is capping upload to 1mbps on wimax. Honestly, I've never gotten more than 250 upload, even when I lived next to a tower Sprint used. I don't upload videos, so it doesn't bother me, but I'd like to once I get the epic.

I'm guessing since it's on a hero its 3g and not 4g right? Wasn't the topic about 4g upload?
Yeah it was, sorry. That's that I get for posting at 3am...
When switching from 3G to 4G my upload speed is multiplied 2- 3 times. However, my upload speed in 4G is only about 5- 10% compared to 3G
3G:
download: 1100kbps
upload: 900kbps
4G:
download: 2,500-3,500 kbps
upload: <80kbps
Have I missed a setting somewhere?
I have a tower less than a mile away, living in down-town Boston.
Thanks in advance,
arc

You must be on an edge of 4g coverage... or indoors or something all jacked up. My last 4G test out on the road was:
7223 down
1119 up (capped)

Wow! The Vibrant does well on AT&T :)

I just plugged in my wife's iPhone SIM into the Vibrant to unlock, then ran the SpeedTest.net app.
I got 1209 kbps down and 347 kbps down in West LA.
Not bad, considering that at the same spot I get 400-600 kbps down and 700-1000 kbps up on t-Mobile.
Anyway, it means that the Vibrant can do perfectly adequately internationally.
And in West LA, with the spirent settings removed, the GPS works pretty good too!
Once I get my phone unlocked, I'll post my Canadian TMO Vibrant 3G scores.

How does LA get worse than Columbus, OH? Amount of people on the network?

Nice numbers! How many gma's are surfing the web down there?!
I get anywhere between 500kbps (1 bar) to 1200kbps (5 bars) download, and between 100-300 kbps (1 bar/5 bars respectively)
TMOs 3G is pathetic in this part of town (my home).

no, I used to live in Tampa. Bradenton / Sarasota is the gma's and gpa's
5462/1692, 66 ping. I'm down the street from TMO HQ in factoria washington.
5708/4215 51ms on wifi (comcast)
Ha, test server is in Bellevue up the street. Amusing.
1900MHz carriers are rarely used because AT&T has their network spaced out for 850MHz. 850MHz is probably the most overcrowded and slow.
For the record, 1900 is hardly "international"

the same can be said for AWS
LOL
Yeah T-Mobile either seems to be really fast, or just plain sucky. Luckily I live in a place where it's really fast
The TMO 3G situation at my place is quite amusing. I can get around 1-2mbps from where I am, but if I drive about 2 miles in one direction I'll get 4-5mbps easily. Go the opposite way 2 miles and I am lucky to get 700kbps. Would be great to see the backhaul to the surrounding towers upgraded a bit more.

DI18 fixed 3g upload speeds, but 4g download speed is cut in half!

anyone else in 4G land experiencing the same problem?

Can you do this repeatably? I think this is probably a case of bad sample data. 4G speeds tend to fluctuate *wildly* because of a.) environmental impacts of a 2.5GHz signal (ever tried to measure actual WiFi performance on a laptop over 802.11n? You'll see what I mean - no two tests are remotely the same) and b.) Network congestion, usage, and number of devices, and c.) Signal strength. If you're indoors, don't even think about comparing 4G speeds, as the 2.5GHz frequency is terrible at penetrating buildings.
In order for your claim to be valid, it would be useful to have time-dependent data, and at least say, 10-20 test results. Then, the same after the update would be useful as well. I've seen 4G speeds on my Evo be 400kbit/s one day and 3.9Mbit/s another day, same place. My Epic 4G has given me speeds in excess of 5Mbit, but later tests didn't get the same performance.
I'm not saying that there's no chance you're right, but I'd say that *much* more data is needed. Try it again tomorrow, at different times, in different places. See how it stacks up. I'm just gonna put this as bad data. (Also, reboot your phone just in case you have a data hog running.)
Yeah you really can't tell anything by one or two tests. I just ran three tests and I got download speeds of 6300, 3200 and 5300. Uploads varied from 430kbps to 1300kbps.
I'm in a fairly poor signal area right now but even in good signal areas it can vary a lot. At work I get anywhere from 6000kbps to 9000kbps.
i just did 3 tests as well from inside my room with all but 1 bar and i am also in Brooklyn (a area that has 4g but it's not officially live yet) and my results were...
Download/Upload
7638/1142
6970/1128
8009/1119
I don't know what they were before but speeds like that are just fine for me i think it was just a random mess up for you
My 4g is fine.

They must have just added this a day or two ago, because last time I checked, which was 2 days ago, that wasn't there
Can anyone else confirm this in their area?
Would you still have to unlock your phone like a sim unlock? Or do you just simply flash the metroPCS ROM and be on your merry way? Or do they do this in a store?
In store I would imagine. I called a bunch of retailers around here and almost all of them still said they couldn't do it, so I don't know why they have it on the metroflash site like that.
Jacksonville, FL - YES!! Its listed. yeppi.......
I wouldn't get my hopes up, no one around here can do it for me, but it may be different for you.
I am interested in metro mainly due to sprints latest tou adjustment. Them nickles and dimes are bleeding me. Anyone with metro chime in on network coverage, data speeds ect.
I have evo on cricket and its android plan. I have direct internet my speeds are 1.2 to 1.4 download speeds and up to .9 upload. Evo internet seems to be much faster than HD2 on tmobile
i did it and it was the best move i did i seen ads on craigslist for people doing it for 125 and they fix everything for you but i looked at the guides and thought i could do it becuase i did it on my droid so i paid 30$ and the did everything myself the root the diag drivers the cdma workshop the qpst even after that my mms and voicemail didnt work but i already fixed that the only problem im having is keeping my batter alive more than 2 and a half hours
Thanks for the heads up--I was able to find a metropcs dealer in my area (star cellular on fruitvale, oakland, ca: 510-336-3100). Got them to flash and add my esn. Now I'm poking around, figuring how to get internet/data working. Thx!
Damn, Metro's on the come up. LOL Gonna have to let my cuz know about this, he's been wanting an EVO on Metro for a minute.
What are the data speeds like on Metro? I am in SF bay area if it matters.
what r good roms
metro's network is 1x only except for dallas and detroit where its spotty. theyre skipping 3g and going directly to lte
Avoid Metro unless you are switching to their new 4G LTE service
The good: unlimited talk, unlimited text
The bad: Their data is only 1X, meaning it is very slow. Some picture messages end up undelivered when sending to friends on other cell networks. (Sprint, Verizon, TMobile)
If you are switching to Metro PCS's new 4G LTE service then yes, else avoid at all cost.
I can verify that regular metro branded phones are indeed running at 1x. For ****s and giggles I set up wireless tether and let someone use it. They said its definitely faster. Lol
They are advertising 4g in my area too but someone told me the only android that metro offers with 4g is the galaxy s. I wonder if LTE is as spotty and range limited as wimax. There's wimax in my area but you need to be very close to a tower to get connection and decent speed.

Post your mobile data speeds!

I had never been concerned with data speeds on the Moto G, it always just worked and I never had speed issues so I didn't worry about it for the most part. But after doing some testing I'm pretty impressed with the throughput on this device.
Please post your carrier, geographic area, and signal type, strength, and band (use LTE Discovery or SignalCheck Lite)

I"ll have to do a screenshot later but I know I don't approach your best speed. The best I"ve seen is about 45Mbps down and 8 to 10 up. I have AT&T in Greenville, SC and I get my best speeds testing to a Comcast server in Atlanta, GA about 110 miles away. My pings run 89-90 ms. Of course there's so many people here with cell phones and it's just you and that other person in ND isn't it. JK
