AT&T Xperia Play Photos - Xperia Play General

Here are pictures of my AT&T Xperia Play! I met up with a guy from Fremont CA and he wanted a iphone 4 + cash on top. Where he got it he couldn't say but so far it's unreleased on the AT&T network. When I connect it to my pc, it has a system update for it already but i'm kinda hesitant to do so until it's officially released to the public.
In one picture it shows "EDGE" for the network on the home screen but I guarantee this is no R800i model or some photoshop BS. It connects to H+ once I get out of my house. I just made some quick pictures of the AT&T built in apps and phone properties in the settings.
YES the phone has AT&Ts lock for sideloading apps. I'm trying to get this to connect to my pc with Android Injector but the program doesn't recognize the phone for some reason even when the sony software suite the phone installs onto my Win7 PC.
I'm new to this forum and don't have 8posts to put yet so if any senior members would like to repost the pictures please do! Lemme know if there is any other pics needed. Sorry for the dark one, I snapped that one before I went to sleep in poor lighting.

Was the Sony software suite you mentioned the PC Companion? And have you tried installing ADB? That's what I used for sideloading apps onto my Motorola Backflip.
I would recommend checking out these topics:
[HOW-TO] ADB for Dummies(How-To Learner's Guide)
[GUIDE] ADB, Fastboot, and Nandroid for Noobs
[ADB Setup] Motorola Backflip (This is what I used and it might be similar for the Xperia Play.)

Did you try to fastboot into it? :3

Thanks guys for the tips! I may try ADB this weekend. Nope I didn't try to fastboot it but I also haven't tried rooting the phone yet either. I've just ordered some generic cases off e-bay because the OE plastic protective film is starting to come off the front and back. As a temporary fix I'm using a Japanese X10 screen film and stretched a blackberry storm rubber case over it. Functional yes...but playable function no but i'm not trying to scratch the phone up with one little mistake.
Yup it's the PC Companion software and it has AT&Ts glove logo in the upper left. As soon as I plug the phone in, it says there is an update for the phone. This being a unreleased AT&T test phone, im kinda scared to try it at the moment because I'm unsure what it's going to do. Baseband update? UI fixes? The Xperia Home does however crash sometimes when doing a cold boot and I have to force close before it loads normally. Coming from an iphone 2G-4, i've been pretty good as far as not updating too often. I don't think AT&T would be like Apple remotely kill the phone like they did the iphone 4 but who knows.
Do any of you have a R800 i or a model and got asked to update via the companion on day one upon release?
I promise to have more better pix this weekend. Just busy with work at the moment.

Does it have Timescape or other Sony specific bloatware installed? What about brightness? Is it adjustable or no? The Verizon edition is supposedly vanilla android with a few VZ apps. Wondering if the AT&T model is the same. Does it have a code number like R800at anywhere?

I read a few posts already claiming that the verizon model will be vanilla android... but who said that? did someone saw the phone already?
do we have a source?
i dont understand why Sony Ericsson will let Verizon to remove all their soft, and then SE giving Verizon the exclusive for the US... to be honest, i dont think so, otherwise i wouldnt mind to give you any exclusive, and you will have to sell it like all the rest of phone companies at launch time....
just my 2 cents...

Well on GDC they were showing off the Verizon version of the phone and it had vanilla android. They even said it will come with vanilla android on launch.

They mentioned it at CTIA too...

I have no clue on this but I'm wondering if this has anything to do with The PC Companion software never completing. I bit the bullet and tried to update the phone to see what would happen. The phone software update always fails no matter what as if it can't find the necessary components on Sonys servers.
The other two programs did install on my pc however: File browser and MediaGo and let me say Wow Media Go totally looks like a re-skinned iTunes! Anybody making the transition from iphone to xperia shouldn't have any issues.
Pictures will come later

Hmm... MediaGo Store isn't working....

This morning I fastloaded my Xperia Play and now the bootloader is unlocked. One thing I'm itching to do is use the R800i root method. Do you guys think this will be compatible with my play?? My build number is different.
(PS) couple of more posts and i'll be good to go to upload pix finally

After unlocking my bootloader on my Xperia Play I noticed the AT&T Logo doesn't show up anymore when I connect the phone? Does that mean the warranty is voided now? One thing it never did was finish updating the phone software. It would always get 75% of the way and get an error. This is what it looks like before and after on the Companion Screen.
PS Updated photos on 1st page.

Wow! I didn't think that Sony Ericsson would have unlocked the bootloader of a R800at version considering that those will most likely be locked to AT&T. Perhaps SE will sell some unlocked in the US through Sony Style or something like that?
EDIT:
Does it still ask you to update after you unlocked it? And if so, does it complete now? And does it still have the AT&T splash screen when booting, or did that go away too?

When I unlocked the bootloader the Splash logo still remains but however it still doesn't update in the PC Companion. I'm wondering if because it's a "test unit"if this is the reason? It's already on 2.3.3 while I think others mentioned theirs is on 2.2.2??? Maybe the software is trying to update to 2.3.3 but realizes it's already updated? I don't know. However the phone is kinda buggy... If I do a cold boot, the phone always crashes the home launcher even on a fresh system cleanup. I really want to root this phone but I don't want to brick my unit trying the R800i method.
I still can't sideload for some reason. I tried Android Injector and Android Side Wonder Machine. The SDK can detect the phone but A.S.W.M doesn't for some odd reason?
I want to root so I can edit the adata folder and hex edit the manufacturer settings file and turn on "unknown sources to true" I hate having to sideload but at this point I can't even if I wanted to. I want to sideload my n64oid and psx4android but those aren't in the market place anymore.
This is a picture of a harsh crash that occured while attempting to run a PSX game in FPSe.

Any luck getting ADB to work? I've never used either of those side-loading programs, but ADB always worked with my Backflip. Eventually I used Z4 to root it, but I don't know if that'll work on the Play.

Finally Rooted! Gingerbreak
Well I bit the bullet and tried Gingerbreak 1.2 and it succesfuly rooted my
R800at! Scary thing tho was the fact that it took approximately 13-min to do. The phones SD card was mounted but the phone was doing something funky with the SD-card showing the unmounted "safe to remove sd icon". I got scared after reading peoples posts saying it only took about 1min on their devices.
I then tried tapping on the memory card in settings to remount but got Force Close errors! I then waited a little longer as the phone wasn't actually frozen..so maybe it was still thinking? then BAM! phone just turned off! I turned it back on and there was only a black screen with a dim backlight for about 2-3min. I was thinking to myself $*@T i just bricked the phone! 2more minutes passed and then the Sony Ericcson logo came up...frozen followed by the AT&T logo which seemed to freeze for about a good 2-3min as well.
Well patience paid off because I'm glad I didn't force power off the system while Gingerbreak was doing it's magic! I guess with the r800at it just needs some more time to setup. approx (15min) I rooted a Generic IPAD "flytab" with 1.6 android with a custom rom and it took about that long just to startup the first time...
Now I just want native "unknown sources" sideloading to be enabled and i'll be good to go.

Got ADB to work finally! Just a dumb user error.... haven't messed with a DOS like environment since 6.22 haha. I had a dumb typo and sure enough I was able to transfer my apk files from my Galaxy Tab over.

Excellent! Glad to hear. I know ADB can be a little cumbersome at times, but it's very useful. Plus the commands you use in it are pretty similar to using the terminal on the phone. I'm still not sure if there's a way to just turn on the option for installing from unknown sources. That would be ideal. At least now we know that it is possible to sideload apps on the R800at.

[Q] WIFI and USB Tether Sucks on TMOUS

Hi
I am a noob with a rooted TMOUS HTC HD2.
I have the latest KWBR rom installed along with Nexus One FROYO.
The internet connection via USB and Wifi are terrible when I connect the phone normally. Its also slow when I connect via FROYO. I am supposed to get 3G speeds or better; instead it feels like I'm dialing up from 1997. When I had a G1 connections were fast... Any suggestions on what I should do to improve? Are there settings I should tweak? Using a Vaio Netbook laptop.
Thanks.
Cacy
Tell us your actual speed using http://www.dslreports.com/mspeed?jisok=1
Rooted. I swear, between that and HardSPL being called jailbreak im about to shoot someone. If you are HardSPL'd you are NOT rooted, because WinMo doesnt require stupid rooting of any kind to be able to do stuff, outside of SDA application unlocker for a T-Mo branded HD2. Anyways, WiFi routing will always be slower than physically tethering your phone through USB. Keep in mind, cell connection speeds vary wildly from cell to cell, so your mileage will most definately vary as far as speed is concerned. I generally get 1.0MBps down at my house, but like 2 miles down the road I get almost 5...so its just all relative to your location.

What do you mean by rooted? Also wondering if you have tried different Wifi router programs and which one you are currently using.
I'm surfing the web fast when connected to my TMOUS HD2 on my laptop.
If you read the android development thread where you got your android build I'm sure the 1st post states android is still in it's "development phase". Nothing is stable about it, and 3G is not working perfectly.
It's the netbook
or it could be the signal quality
Well I would not Generalize that tethering with T-mobile sucks, because this is the speed I get when tethered with my "rooted" HD2. Oh yeah, it's also "jailbroken", and of course it comes that way from the store.

Yeah, I know. Not every hack/crack/exploit done to a phone has to relate to these iPhone terms.
Exactly my point, the iPhone has made cracks and hacks available to the general public. We had HardSPL's since WAY before the iPhone was even a thought, and yet it's now called jailbreaking. Pisses me off it does. People come the iPhone to an ACTUAL smartphone, and think they have to jump through UNIX hoops to actual LOAD APPS onto it. Losers.

Exactly. The general public separate from us here at xda-developers didn't even know about smartphone hacking 'till the iPod touch/iPhone combination came into play, and now they relate EVERY hack to it. Makes me wanna nuke 'em, like I said in a previous post
The iPhone is pure crap. Add a 1GHz processor, more RAM, a GPS and more all you want, but in the end, crap is still crap except it's faster crap.
I swear, the iPhone community has dumbed down every hacking community. Oh sure, it's easy. Flash a new Recovery image to your iPhone/iPod and you're done. I bet that if you asked an iPhone user to root a G1 on 1.6 they wouldn't even last 2 seconds. They'd probably **** up the phone so bad it would probably have to be JTAG'd to recover it.
And some of the users of iPhones are hipster d-bags. I love it. Someone tried to wave their iPhone in front of my face talking about their phone is better than my HD2. A nice 20 second start for Windows and a nice fast boot into Android shut their damn mouth. I told 'em, it doesn't matter if you have a front camera. Who uses it all that often. It doesn't matter that your phone has a 1GHz processor. The interface is some simplistic Mac OS X port. It's what you can DO with the phone that matters. They fling the whole App Store thing in my face. I showed them how over 30% of their stinkin' App Store is full of FART applications. I start up XDA WiFi Sharing for tethering, tell them to do the same: "$20 more dollars a month for USB tethering". I laughed in their face and walked away
(Oh, and the dialer completely froze on the iPhone too )

Now I tested your slow speed claims, and I can say. Your netbook is slow. Look at my results
Proof:
Damn straight, the iPhone has turned the masses into thinking they can "hack" something because they can plug in their phone and hit that damn "Restore" button. iPhone users in general are d-bags in my experience. Give me the days of the G4 Wizard and never knowing if your flash is gonna kill your device if you look at it the wrong way before you give me the iPhone. You gotta love how they always use the app store as a plus...well I don't know about you, but ive got like 50+ programs on my HD2...all WinMo freeware from places like pocketpcfreeware.com and from here on XDA...not a damn dime spent on programs. Oh and I can install stuff to my SD card straight out of the box. And tether. And install themes. And use Flash. Or another browser that isn't Safari. And use custom ringtones...that I make myself out of downloaded songs...for free. /end rant.

Oh those were the days. I remember one time I thought a ROM flash died in the SPL and Radio stage. My heart sank. But then the magic number, 11% came up
As a matter of fact, it's still those days for us T-Mobile US HD2 owners and those horrid .51 radios
Someone who doesn't know flashes a .51 on a TMOUS. Boom. No HD2. A pure OH SHI----- moment.

Speaking on this, I'm gonna go undercover to the Apple store today. Make a video. And put it on Youtube.

Returning the Atrix tonight.

Many of you called me a baby after half the features out of the Atrix's box did not work. Here are some of the problems:
Internet problems. Oh god, so many internet problems.
1) Hemorrhaging data with WiFi on. Why is this even possible? There were four programs I had to change in order not to use my regular Data plan. That's three too much. "Why bother to get the Atrix if you don't want to learn how to customize and set things?"
I literally had to hunt down the things that were not using WiFI when connected to my home WiFi. If the Android OS is like this, I literally do not want it. If you are connected to WiFi there should be NO option to ever use regular data because it's ****ing common sense. I mean I was using 50 MB/DAY when I was using 50 MB/MONTH on my iPhone. What programs were doing this? Not FB, since I have no apps installed.
2) EMail won't work. And by won't work, I don't mean that problem I had with no TLS option from Motorola that prevented my school email from working with the default app requiring me to use another app to manage my gmail and email. I mean that it won't ****ing work. Gmail won't load, Gtalk won't load (LITERALLY WILL NOT LOAD EVEN ON WIFI) and it won't refresh. I got it to work on the first day and then after that forget it. I sent test emails from three different accounts. I would get them 2, 3, 4 hours later - NEW EMAIL! Not in inbox. Just new email notification. Installed another email app after rooting. Won't load. Just refreshes 24/7 until I force close, then restart application. "Why not just push it to your gmail?" I like to keep my school and personal gmail separated. God forbid I want that.
3) lmfao at design. Power button on back. I installed volume rockers. Phone is hilariously bad at this point when you have to mod it so it can turn on like regular phones (flat on a table).
4) internet speeds:

Is there any argument for this at all? There shouldn't be. "Oh my Atrix is slow too!" No. You don't know slow. That above is SLOW.
All in all, this was a horrible, horrible first foray into Android. I know some people are going to say, Why bother get a customizable phone if you're going to ***** and whine and be a baby about not wanting to customize things?
I draw the analogy at Windows PC = Android phone. Windows PCs work fine right out of the box, you can use it right out of the box without having to download a thousand things. Sure, you CAN customize it, but the machine should work. For me, this was not the case. It took two days of rooted customization and it STILL doesn't work.
So what, just go back to the iPhone? I was looking for the Android as the way out of the monotonous iPhone. But it does work for me. I like to customize things, but when it comes to downloading app after app after app to get it to work minimally like I want it to? Done.
And I'm home! The guy was incredibly cool. Good luck Atrix users!

Sorry the device didn't work for you. Glad to see you tried though.
Out of curiosity, what are you going to next?
I had my eyes on the Samsung Galaxy II S, assuming it comes to AT&T. But I am going to be XXXXXXX. I am going to go to the store, and ask to mess with it for no less than 1 hour. If school email loads, speed test apps are decent, and assuming school WiFi works without taking 2 hours, then I don't see why not. The Atrix looked good when I could use it for the 20 minutes that I did.
But in the event that I just ****ing hate Android, looks like it's the iPhone 4_ in the summer for me. I get my upgrade back in 2 days and my 3G is more than kickin' it and I can wait a few months because my phone works the way I want it to. I'm not the biggest Apple fan but if it works, it works.
Happy you are now happy with your phone - Could you watch the language please? Read the forum rules...
Oops, sorry. I was just so frustrated but now I'm decently happy.

Please don't get the Samsung Galaxy II S, at least not right at release. Think about a phone that's been out on the market for a while and has a lot of the bugs and issues worked out.

Why are you going to a galaxy s 2? Most of your complaints are with android not the atrix. The 'phantom data' your talking about is probably just a sleep setting with your wifi, the power button was necessary for the fingerprint scanner (which works awesomely). Your just an average iPhone user, your phone has to do everything for you, and you hate choices. Enjoy mediocrity.

so i am curious to know.. if i return my atrix is inspire 4g the way to go.. ?
The inspire has its own issues. Bad/mediocre battery life is a major one. Although a plus is its currently running at 1.8 ghz, and its got cm support which the atrix will probably never get.
Yeah, I'm with the other people that you should go back to iPhone. I think your first two issues were with Android in general, as you so erroneously analogized Android with Windows since it's more like Unix than anything else.
Android definitely requires a lot of set up. I would even have to agree that the menu options seems somewhat disorganized, especially with the "hidden" menu button options when you're ALREADY IN THE MENU.

isn't it too late to get iPhone 4 now?? i think at&t does not have various android options like Verizon does... which bothers me.. i mean At&t gets inspire4g where as Verizon gets the better version that is Thunderbolt.. I don't get it.. i thunderbolt came to At&t i wouldn't think about anything and just get that one.. it has all the features and its awesome looking... Inspire on the other hand is just like the Desire HD.. still HTC sense is beasty...
I mean I wanna know whether most of the people who are returning their Atrix.. what are they going for instead.. are they still sticking with At&t or changing to another phone... which i don't see much options other than Aria, iPhone, Inspire, few Blackberry and the extreme late comer Windows phone 7?

If people are complaining about Inspire battery life just wait for the Thunderbolt battery life.

If you thought the atrix was bad, then you definitely don't want Samsung, they are the worst android phone manufacturer. Don't ever expect an update with them and if you get one it will probably brick your phone. The only thing that's made my Samsung vibrant worthwhile is the amazing developer community who has made the phone 1000 times better than Samsung's software development team.
End of rant.

yea heard its gonna be awful as well.. in fact they delayed the release cause the battery was just awful.. well aside that at least it is quite current compared to the inspire.. i mean there is much difference but still it looks and i am guess would feel better.. also it has front facing camera which is not a big deal in general but at least it is included for future use ..maybe. and it has a kick stand.
BTW is it too late now to go for EVO 4g?

since you have a desire.. hows the battery life in yours? does it at least last a day or a bit less than that? cause isn't it based the same for the inspire./..
the thing is i initially returned my inspire cause i wanted a better spec phone .. and i thought the Atrix would get rooted soon and also the bootloader will get unlocked.. but after spending days on these forums it doesn't look like anything is gonna happen with the bootloader.. obviously it is good to wait.. i guess.. for another 22 days for me..lol but now i am thinking to return this device and getting the inspire back... ..
no idea what to do..
"re upgrade"
i got a general question.. for AT&T can i get my upgrade possibility back? like return the phone and get my upgrade back instead of using it for another device.. will i definitely get the upgrade back? Kinda new to AT&T so.. not sure

You should be able to, but from my past experience, I've always had to contact CSR (just a hassle) . You should also make sure they roll back your contract.

Quick trick to get OTA Jellybean

Not sure if this is where this goes but this worked for me on 3 Nexus S 4G's today..
All of them on different accounts. One is flashed to MetroPCS and still get's Jellybean love!
Remember it will not work right away, just when your sick of doing it BAM..
One phone i tried for 2 hours and nothing..Then just before my friend left my house i tried once more and it worked..
If this does not work for you, well, at least i gave you something to do while you were bored!
But i swear it worked on 3 phones today!
================================================== =============================
Open the Settings application.
Select Apps.
Select the All drawer, and select Google Service Frameworks.
First, Force Stop the application, then Clear Data.
Now that the Google Service Frameworks are reset, you may check for an update, by selecting About Phone in Settings, and select System Update.
**The last update check should be garbled. Around 1969.**
--------------->If this did not work, try these steps several times. This is important, IT MAY TAKE SEVERAL TRIES BEFORE A RESULT.
Give a thanks if it works for you and reply back with results..
Enjoy
** Not sure about this breaking push notification on apps?
First I heard of this. I guess try at your own risk but my wife's Nexus S 4G seems to be working great after using this method.
## Maybe try to back up apps that use push notifications with Titanium Backup and reinstall after if u have any issues.
Just a thought not sure if that will help!

I thought this broke the push notification on apps that use push, no?
I decided that I could resolve the push if need be and went ahead and tried this again (did it previously on other updates). Tried about five times, walked away for about 15 minutes. Tried again and it worked. Update is downloading now.
Cool. Glad its working for people! Enjoy

So, I just switched to the NS4G from my ET4G because it's been having some hardware issues (Not really relevant for this, but figured I would introduce myself to the Nexus S community this way haha...)
This is what worked for me:
*Force Stop Google Services Framework
*Clear Data On Google Services Framework
*Wait about 5 minutes
*Checked for updates
I did it 1 time, and it worked for me. Not too sure if it'll work that way for everyone, but I believe it's def worth trying.
didnt force stop at all but clear framework and checked now, didnt work.
Read your post, cleared data,
waited 5 mins.
checked and now update.
Thanks file size 121.6mb
ok, so this means only one thing could be possible...Sprint lied to us. they told us the update would start the 6th, but it didn't start until yesterday. I can't count how many posts I saw from people who tried this and it didn't work...now, miraculously, it starts working when we know it's out?!?!?!?!
Look at the facts, people!! Sprint lied to us and the update did not start the 6th like they said. if it had, this would have worked on sept 6th, and would not just magically start working on sept 10th!
This worked. I'm on jellybean now. It took over 26 attempts. No joke. But so worth it.

So question for the New Jelly Bean update... Teamviewer came out with there Quicksuppprt app. It says it only works on Stock firmware, Non modded. It works on Stock ICS but doesnt work on Stock JellyBean. Is any one else having this problem. Im not sure if its because i flashed Jellybean via ODIN yesterday since i didnt want to wait for the OTA to get pushed or is it just the fact that it doesnt work on JellyBean NS4g's yet
Also im rooted, forgot to try before i rooted my device :/
Can anyone who waited for the OTA to get pushed to there phone confirm or not if they are able to Download and install "TeamViewer QuickSupport" to there Jellybean NS4g device
Thanks and much appreciated

are you kidding??
1. they never said it's a two-part update. they said updates would start the 6th...nothing about two parts. even the reps I spoke with said I should have had it already!! The funny thing is, not even two hours after I complained (and openly admitted to having looked on XDA for it and it wasn't out yet) people started getting the OTA. That's pretty coincidental, no?
2. they owed us an update. we are nexus owners. we get every update until the hardware can't run the firmware. If they don't like that, they can choose to stop selling the nexus line...there's the door. If it's a phone that's only on one carrier and the carrier doesn't update, google should step in and release the factory image immediately. Now don't take what I'm saying the wrong way. I don't mean they LEGALLY owe us an update. I mean since we own a development device, they would be pretty stupid to turn their backs on us....many of us have given google a percentage of the code used in final release versions of android. If they turn their backs on those people, they will be pretty screwed. They use quite a few features from roms that were here before google ever had the idea to do that. For example, swipe to clear notifications...that came from CM team. It sure as HELL wasn't google's baby, that's for sure!! That's why I say they owe us an update. Whether any one of us has personally contributed code or not, we have still contributed to the android project by testing the code that the developers here contributed to android.
if they are releasing a rom for two phones it wont be a single wave the galaxy nexus owners got it first because they bought the newer phones and when we bought our nexus s's they never said they would update it forever we are lucky we got it they could have been like nope you have to be a galaxy nexus and honestly we are lucky because most companys would have made us upgrade to get it or make our own i was right beside you waiting for the update and as soon as i had the image files on here i odin'ed them to my phone most sprint reps have no idea whats going on with roms and such but i know i count myself lucky to have a phone like this and not be stuck like i was with my evo shift alot of companys owe us for bettering there product but how many actually pay
wifi
Tried this using 3g or 4g all day and nothing, then tried with wifi and if worked like a charm the 1st time i tried, dont know why it worked out this way, but to those for which this method is not working when connected to 3g or 4g try using this method while connected to wifi, it might just work as it did for me.
Doing the checkin CMD does nothing but the same thing as going through the settings about phone and clicking system update..
Haven't tried this method yet.. May try soon..
Hopefully that OTA hits my way some time soon..
I forgot to add that I was on Wifi also...

Sprint stores had the file so people who had a replacement or a friend inside could of got the update on the 7th.
Sprint never said it was a two part update, but they said it would be a slow rollout for ns4g not gnex, over 8 days between which leaves you to believe the first half would be gnex, second half ns4g. Gonzo posted the files he got at the service center hours before anyone got the OTA link posted so the files were out since the 6th for both phones. SO my point is big deal it was only 4 days. Better than 4 months for ICS and deff better then whats going on over at verizon. Sprint told the truth. Not all reps know the facts. I worked for target and it doesnt mean i knew when we were getting new shipments of products. You should be mad that Sprint didnt explain the process but OTA 4 days later is better than no OTA.
Hopefully, you didnt quit your job or something like that to get the update on the 6th because thats your fault.
but cheer up, you have it now. Play around with the smoothness and yell out "I CANT BELIEVE IT'S NOT BUTTER!!!"
I have been trying to get this to work the last couple of days with no success.
Would having an unlocked bootloader prevent me from getting the OTA? If so, how do I lock the bootloader only?

Thoughts on the Sprint Varient

Ive been a long time lurker on this site prolly since the GSII-- I dont post much then , or with me GSIII or Note 2- I guess thats why that account no longer exists. So with my purchase of the Note Edge i knew this would be my go to place for any information or eventually ROM's-- i gotta say that normally i never spent more then a day with Touchwiz- usually rooting and flashing within 24 hours of purchase. Ive had the phone foe about 4 days and.... HOLY MOLY this phone is slooow... so much crap is running-- 3gb of ram and 2 and half of it is always used-- sprint zone and fb keep updating and re downloading even though i continuously uninstall them daily and revert to original software versions. Now i finally understand peoples hatred towards touchwiz.. im used to ASOP-- I coulda swore touchwiz was NOT that bad in the GSII days ;-( although i have faith the dev. will take off eventually with this phone... if there were other options i might have considered going else where-- im coming from a rooted note2) But i dont think there is anything remotely better then samsung-- as bad ass as the phone is spec'd out to be i thought it would be as zippy as the nexus--- but it is most definitely slower then my note- Also since ive been ot of the loop this KNOX stuff is all new to me--basically from what i gathered by googling any root will void the warranty on the device? ive never ever sent a phone in to samsung but there is times ive gone to A Sprint tech center for help--will they turn me away if its 0x1? well i just wanted to stop by and say hi to this forum-- im beginning the process to acquire files so i can root my phone tonight-- id think the sky is the limit with the things we can do with out phones--- Much thanks to the DEV's that make this possible!!
Well your sprint one seems to be acting funny.. I'm on my T-Mobile Note Edge, and I started from the G1. This phone is really smooth, no errors, and for the first time really no reason for me to have to root my phone and get rid of bloat ware to speed things up! And that was before I disabled the bloat ware anyways. You could say I'm also waiting for a way to root without tripping Knox. I'm kinda curious how ASOP or CyanogenMod will look like on this phone, and if they'll be able to use the edge productively. I'm actually throughly pleased with the phone, especially with how the home launcher is setup. My only bug is the fact that the second favorite edge doesn't allow for reorganization. That's my 2 cents. I hope your experience becomes more enjoyable

Let me restate...i kinda sounded like a whiney brat with my last/first post. I realize that we as a group aa the less then 1% that care about specs.. and ver numbers. Im just not used to TouchWiz trying to do everything for me yet not the things i want it to do. for example every time I touch it text entry field I have a keyboard icon on the top of the notification bar...prompting me to choose Input method EVERYTIME?!? everyday I get sprint zone adverts in my notification bar even though I uninstall it every night before bed.. and multiple times a day I'm asked if I would like to sign in for Picasa.. i say no 3 or 4 times a day.. i cant figure out how to delete it. I miss the custom roms where all this bs is not even installed. Granted i knew there wasn't much support when i took the jump.. and honestly these issues would be the same with the regular note 4... id most definitely be willing to throw some $ to a recocognized established dev out there ... im miss my paranoid android and illusion roms :-/ but i know nothing out there can compare to the note edge at the moment...!
I have none of the issues you speak of. My only real issue is with kit Kat since I can't write to my sd card but other than that I am good with my phone.
I'm using the AT&T stock version and haven't encountered any issues except I waited to long to send it back to get the white version. Lol. Other than that I like the device.

I usually use CWM, but that's only because it's old school. Right now I chose not to install it in the last step of that thread because I have never used TWRP before. I have to say that I like the touch interface.
Besides getting the sprint variant of auto root you also need the sprint variant of TWRP. I posted a guide with basic steps including getting private mode working with xposed

Inquiry to join up with fellow Moto Z / Z Force owners (Verizon) to work on root.

Hello all! Just Inquiring to the geniuses that float around on this site about working to help bring root to this device. I have all the standard things (wired connection to PC, adb access, etc.). Just wondering if anyone needed any extra help or if they need someone to test methods out.
Before I get flamed, I DO know the risks of running commands incorrectly, and running them not knowing if it will work, not work or brick the device.
Currently looking into the mod interface as well. (Might be useful)
unless I understand incorrectly the biggest issue isn't root itself but the needed boot.img that requires an unlocked bootloader because if Android 6.
I'm going to inquire with Moto and see if they would be so gracious enough to unlock my bootloader since the option is there in dev settings. I know this might be a lost cause but maybe if I can get that done, and upload any stock images for people to tinker around with, do you believe it would help the dev community find an exploit?

Will not happen. Verizon won't let them. Just wait for the unlocked version to come out and a dev to get that.
Question: when the unlocked version comes out, that won't matter to us stuck using big red's version, will it?

Dont know. It could or it might not. It could lead to the finding of an exploit that we can use. When that comes out we have better odds. Heck we might just be able to do a simple flash and flash some verizon stuff....Prob not knowing verizon but it could happen. My advice is not to update until we see how the unlocked versions development is going. But as of right now no one is working on this phone.
Good odds tho. Unlocked comes out and people start working on it to unlock even more stuff for more mod development we might get lucky and get some trickle down exploits that will free us.
But knowing verizon i bet they have something in the works to force people to update. Because they are shady like that. Oh here is a new moto mod. And its only $20 and will add like wireless charging and a second sd card slot....but it wont work unless you use this software update. And oh by the way it fixes that exploit. I could see them doing something like that. Using a cheap mod that would be awesome like a mod that gives wireless charging and a second micro sd card slot to force us to update to use it and patch a exploit.
Great phone only phone i have ever had that i did not require root and a bootloader unlock. Hell its the only phone i will use stock...Well i use nova launcher but not to speed it up. Just to block the verizon bloatware from my app list. God i cant wait for them to load down the phones with all the yahoo bloat now. My god help us next year.
yahoo maps
yahoo messenger
yahoo news
yahoo search
Just to name a few of the crap they will load down. Get a 32gig phone. 5gigs of it will be verizon and yahoo apps you will never use that cant be uninstalled.
If our project was only gaining root access, then the Verizon Moto Z / Z Force currently has vulnerabilities listed under quadrooter.

The international version does come out soon and hopefully we can get some progress on the bootloader!
As far as gaining root access, if I knew how to code we would already have it since every Moto Z / Z Force has 3 of the quadrooter vulnerabilities. If you want screenshots of which ones and their details let me know :3

That's a bold statement...
Do you have a development background? I wasn't sure from your first post and your last one.
Not well enough to attempt any of these vulnerabilities on my own. Each of the three vulnerabilities allows users to access root privilege on the device without the device being rooted.
I'll put the three vulnerabilities here.
1. https://www.codeaurora.org/invalid-path-check-ashmem-memory-file-cve-2016-5340.
2 and 3. https://www.codeaurora.org/use-afte...tions-kgsl-module-cve-2016-2504-cve-2016-2503
2 and 3 both are very similar, hence the reason for one URL.

Been messing around with my development kit. Good chance of a bootloader unlock and root with this. Bad news is its going to be over $125 for you to get the dev kit. But I think I might be on to something. Won't go into details on here because we all know Verizon watches for stuff like this.
Still gathering more info before I test anything since this is my daily driver. I'll start work when I get my back up phone.
Method will require a dev kit and a PC. So it's not going to be something you can just plug into your PC

This sounds very promising! I've been doing a bit of research and I have a much broader understanding of how gaining root access is accomplished, but not necessarily the bootloader.
I can save up some money and grab a dev kit as well if you want another set of hands on this.
If you need my email let me know, but i've been messing around with some of the exploits and once i get back home (hooray for IT job) i'm going to try out the system-less root, then go from there.
Good findings, and I believe you're on the right track! I read up on what the mods can access and control on the Android system and I'm actually impressed by what it can access and do. Heck, maybe we can even get a script going to utilize most moto mods to allow access to certain areas that we need, aside from the extra battery. I doubt that one will allow any kind of unintended access to areas of the phone. :silly:
If I can grab any kind of root access, would images be helpful to the much smarter people here?

I figured the system for the mods would be the easiest way in. Working on a mod with my dev kit after that I'm going to start messing around more with seeing what I can do. There has to be something in here. First phone to use them first version of moto mods. There is somthing
Good chance root may happen tonight. Meet more work on it. But it won't be something everyone can do. Will require aoto mod dev kit and a fair amount of work. But if I can get it working tonight there seems to be some hope.
in4updates. Great work and keep it up! Only reason I want root is for new emojis haha. I will most likely unroot once 7.0 releases (assuming we get root before we get 7.0)

The method i used 99% of the people here will not be able to do. Requires a moto mod dev kit and some other stuff. I'll work on getting the getting the bootloader from the non Verizon version on it when i get it. As of right now im back to working on my Moto mod so it will be a week or two before i go back to this.
Progress will be very slow. This is my only phone i sold my 6p so i cant do anything to risky on this. I got some ideas on working out a cheaper version. Drop the price of hardware needed from $200+ to $80.
