Samsung Galaxy S2 vs HTC Sensation - Galaxy S II General

HTC Sensation or Galaxy S2?
Torn between these dual core beasts.

Just a very small overview:
HTC:
Screen
Battery
Internal storage (1GB lol)
VGA Front Cam
RAM
Weight. 148 gr. Holy Moly. We should send the phone to fat ca...errr weight management retreat lol
screen resolution: qHD
HTC Sense
Galaxy:
All things HTC has red are better
The thing HTC has green
Easy decision for me.

I think Galaxy S2 is better.... at least in Korea.rep

@OP, C'mon there are tons of threads to talk about this comparison use the damn search button !!

Sense vs TouchWiz if a slapped on interface matters, sense is lovely! Hardware wise SG2 wins.
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App

both are good phones and you cant go wrong with any. however. i believe the GS2 is better specd hardware. better GPU. better screen in terms of colors. there is no even lag in scrolling at the browser.
the only advantage you will have with the HTC if you call it an advantage is the HTC S 3.0 and i wouldnt call it an advantage.
besides. and the most important factor you need to consider. the HTC now is using a Locked bootloader. meaning you wont get custom roms for sure. and considering how the incredible S is been locked for 3 months now without any luck to open it. i would say avoid HTC phones for now
i will not even buy the HTC for 100$. locked bootloader = useless phone for me.
i learned that the hard way from the atrix. and never again.

Having a lower weight does not necessarily mean 'better'. I think build quality in terms of materials (partial reason of the higher weight) is another plus for the Sensation. On the other hand, I prefer the dimensions and shape of the S2.
Furthermore the Sensation's camera has an instant capture feature but the S2 cam has a pretty fast capture too.
Looking at all the + and - I think the S2 is the overall winner.

Very true, imagine when the sgs2 gets cm7 or darky rom!
It's blazing fast on stock!

I wouldn't want to put CM7 on that as the browser would loose any GPU acceleration and be as crappy as other dual core phone, I'll take it as it is with all the optimization from samsung included for performance and battery life

We don't know that yet, so far the benchmarks indicate that the Adreno 220 GPU inside is quicker than the Mali-400 in the Samsung, I still find it hard to believe considering the mali-400 is quad core, so maybe the benchmark is not up to date with quad-core graphics processor's.

what ???? isnt adreno 220 GPU is the same was used in Desire HD and Xperia Play ?
if so, thats more reason to avoid the Sensation. because that GPU is lower than the Nexus S GPU. let alone come close to SG2. that thing will do marathon around the Adreno 220 and that is based both trying to run Nintendo 64 Emulator at the same time same game.
hell i just hope you made a typo and you are not talking about that old horrible GPU :/

Do not or can not?

Is this thread still going on, frankly there is no competition with the SGS2, here's a brief summary:
The Galaxy S2 is out May 1st (phones4u will release on 27 Apr), it will be the king of superphones for a while yet: Most powerfull 1.2 Dual core CPU/GPU combo (yes much better than HTC Sensation), Thinnest phone in the world (8.49mm compared to the Sony Arc 8.7mm and Iphone 4 (around 9.2mm i believe), Best screen tech in the world (exclusive to Samsung - Super Amoled Plus) see below:

And also
PS : I Didn't add the SoC though the Mali-400(Galaxy S2) probably is going to be a better GPU, but we can't verify for now. And Bootloader is probably not locked on Galaxy S2 but for the HTC Sensation it is quite sure.

You cannot compare the number of cores on a GPU unless it is the same architecture, it doesn't make sense at all.
A single core GPU can easily be ten times faster than quad core GPU. It is just how they choose to arrange the GPU-architecture in order to have versions with different speeds.
In fact, even a 300$ gaming card for PC's is single core.

[Q] 75 FPS score?

I've been watching the preview video @ AndroidCentral I think they have covered the phone quite well.
There Neocore test show a score of 75 FPS - that 20 FPS more than the Samsung SGS/Vibrant.
Since the Samsung SGS/Vibrant comes with a PowerVR SGX 540 chipset (Device Magazine) which is the best out there along with 1GHz ARM Cortex A8 processor - whereas the Droid Pro comes with a PowerVR SGX 530 chipset (Motorola Developer site) how comes this baby is giving out a much better FPS rate?
Would like to hear your experienced views on this!
If you compare it the D2/D2G, DX, and Milestone 2 you will notice that the DP performance is better that those devices despite the same cpu/gpu combo(but less internal memory). So, from what I am reading most of it has to do with the lower HVGA screen vs the VGA screen of all aforementioned devices. Lower screen res means less work for the gpu.

This makes so much sense for improving battery life and plus what's the point on using such high res screens whereas the human eye can perceive only 200dpi.
Just a thought!
Personally I agree. It really makes me mad that I saw all these rave reviews on the Samsung Galaxy S phone's screens, but me personally I can't tell a difference between my Fascinate and my DPro, other than the fact the screen is smaller.
Maybe its time for me to see the eye doctor.

WBU?
A drop of Chuck Norris's semen was placed on the IPhone. We now have the Htc Evo.
The Evo, maybe with the touch buttons a little lower and thus the screen a little bigger to fill that area.
With a dual-core tegra 2 and the fastest GPU out there with 16 GB ROM, 2 GB RAM.
Maybe a bigger battery if possible too.
Couldn't imagine a better phone.

Evo Successor:
-Same screen but better resolution and maybe Gorilla Glass
-NFC

-Full HDMI capabilities OTB
-Unibody Aluminum/Plastic Design
-Kickstand in the middle
-Sexier form factor instead of the standard squared look
-Better GPU

I guess it'd need to be equipped with a time machine so the phone can go into the future and equip itself with new technologies and then come back to present day. Oh, and it'd have to be sold by a brand new carrier since all US carriers suck so bad... and it'd need to be free.

Oppo Unveils World's First 1080p Smartphone
12:00 AM - September 12, 2012 by Tuan Mai - source: Phonearena
Chinese manufacturer to release 5-inch smartphone with a whopping 441 PPI screen.
ZoomWhen you think of smartphone titans the first company that comes to mind may be Samsung or Apple. But despite their record high smartphone sales, neither company has achieved what Chinese phone company Oppo has. After releasing the world's thinnest smartphone and the world's thinnest quad core smartphone, the company is back again with the world's first 1080p smartphone.
Dubbed the Oppo Find 5, the 5-inch smartphone features a whopping 441 pixels per inch (PPI), making the iPhone's 326 PPI retina display look like an Etch A Sketch toy from the 60s. Resulting in a crisp 1920 x 1080 display, the Oppo Find 5 knocks the 5.5-inch Galaxy Note 2 out of the water. Even better, the Oppo Find 5 has just as much beauty on the inside as it does on the surface.
The device is going to ship with Android 4.1 on a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro APQ8064 processor. To get an idea of how powerful this chip is, the APQ8064 easily beats the Exynos 4412-based Galaxy S III and Tegra 3-based Nexus 7 on a number of benchmarks. Other rumored specs include 2GB of RAM, a 12-megapixel rear camera, 2-megapixel front facing camera, 16GB or 32GB of storage and a 2,500mAh battery pack.
No word on pricing or a release date just yet, but we'll keep you posted. Until then, we'll just have to hope for a global release so we can all enjoy this promising smartphone.

As i`am beeing a longtime Samsung user and most of the time satiesfied, it is exciting and more important necessary that when more parties are entering with good smartphones that is good for us consumers. It might keeps the big three (Samsung, Apple and HTC) pushing the envelope and produce even better and maybe more price fiendly smartphones. So this is not only related to the S3 forum but for all android devices forums. I as a consumer want the best in quality/price related phone. That doesn`t have to be a Samsung, HTC or any other device per se.
It's harder to sue a Chinese company for patent theft so the way things are going the Chinese companies might be the only real chance to risk some future innovation.

So years of hard work by major players are not worth considering if a new mobile with a killer spec arrives? Releasing a mobile is one part, reliability and software support is another part.
If these Chinese players can do then I'm sure samsung or any other major players can do the very same
1080p sounds jaw dropping, I really doubt the performance of graphics with that resolution. Do exynos5 or adreno 320 has enough power to do so.? Considering the iPad with powervr graphics I think it might be possible.

The problem with the Chinese devices is that they use an annoying version of android like miui, lewa etc. If they just use AOSP with added features and theme they could blow samsung away!

Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk 2
May be Xperia S hav better specs, screen(~342PPI!!). But u think Sony ll update it to Jelly Bean Not even a rumor on it till today.. My suggesstion is go for quad core in future its price ll surely come down(~20-30k INR).. Till then enjoy S2... Yest i saw my friends Note II, what can i say just fabulous jelly bean cant be smoother than that, faster than that... But touchwiz sucks again... I hope sammy ll update S2 to JB very soon..
i have both devices
the only thing i like about xperia is Its 720p resolution (not the screen color and contrast)
rest S2 is far more better then xperia
lol after hearing this comments i am totally confused to trade or not......but dont u think s2 lacks nfc and better build quality and resolution??

Specs and personal preferences aside, Sony (or Sony Ericsson) phones have been lacking in built quality over the past few years. I would choose a high end Samsung anytime nowadays compared to Sony. Just my few cents ...:silly:

[General Discussion] Xperia SP

Sony is doing a pretty good job with optimizing software for their hardware. The xperia SP which has a dual core processor beats the xperia Z and the Zl and some other quadcore phones in benchmarks. I hope sony will make improvements to the xperia Z as well. The only thing sony needs to work on is their displays, the SP seems to have about the same level blacks as the Z and the contrast ratio is also very low.
Benchmarks: http://www.gsmarena.com/sony_xperia_sp-review-924p5.php
All this shows is... sony are very lazy with their 'flag ship' if a mid range phone can beat it in most tests....

No man, it's all because of that 720p resolution. Z have 1080p with the same GPU.

According to the GSM arena review, the contrast ratio on the SP is better than Z. How could a mid-range phone has a better contrast than a flagship phone?
I can not understand why Sony does not use ips TFT

But it does (for the Xperia Z).

Sony have a habit of doing stuff like that though, when they released the Xperia T it was meant to be the flagship yet the V had certain features that were far better...
If you make a flagship it should be the BEST! of what you can do.. not parts of it.
Lets make things clear.
First of all, the Sony Xperia SP is indeed a fast phone, but not faster than de Z or ZL. The reason why the SP scores higher on some benchmarks is easy to explain. The SP has a 720p display, while the Z and ZL both have a 1080p display. That's about twice as many pixels to render. In the real benchmarks such as Antutu or Linpack, the Z and ZL clearly have their advantage.
Second of all the software on the Sony Xperia SP is probably more mature (albeit with two months) than the Z and ZL software. GSM Arena and other reviewers just benchmark their phones when they receive them, so probably with pre-release software. Since the SP basicly has the same platform, you can easily guess why some benchmarks on the SP are a bit higher. But when you will test with new software on the Z or ZL, the difference should be minimal.
Lastly, Sony uses IPS LCD on their phones. If you don't think that's true, you're just ignorant.

What's the need of this? If you're not happy with your phone that's your problem... But this kind of comparisons are useless. If your neighbor's car is better than yours even if he paid less, does that mean your car is bad?
Instead of doing this things, try to enjoy your phone please.

But if you compare nexus 4 with xz.
Both have same cpu and gpu.
But nexus 4 comes with 720 p screen unlike XZ
And when benchmarked, XZ showed better results than nexus 4.

come back to the saying...numbers isnt everything. 1080p isnt something amazing either, for a screen size this small you will not see it. Buy this phone because of it durability not because of it spec.

Bull****. Numbers is almost everything. Aesthetics are important too, but would you buy a phone that has only a dual-core, qHD screen and 2G because it looks beautiful? Nope, don't think so.
Comparing to the SP is also nonsense. It's like comparing a current-gen pc with a slightly less current-gen pc. Both are fast, but the higher end one should clearly be the winner.
Finally, 1080p on 5" is amazing. Anyone who says it isn't is ignorant. I had a Galaxy Note which has a pixel density of 285ppi, which would be high enough. But I still see the difference with this device. It is just amazing! Also the quad-core, 2GB of RAM and fast GPU are amazing too. If you don't think it matters, buy a Note or any other last-gen phone and see for yourself...

um yea I would I am actually debating on keeping the S3 over the Z because I can attach a bigger battery to it, hence i dont care about esthetic, It's a ****ing phone not a ****ing ferrari.
you cant even see the 1080p on a 17in laptop why would u see it on a 5in display. PPI can be change via root app big deal
http://carltonbale.com/1080p-does-matter/
here's a little reading, stop buying into the marketing gimmick, this is just like the statement "the larger the MP the better the picture" um no its not, any photographer can tell you the glass is what make the picture better.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=diLD42QafIo pause at 3:57 thats how close you got to look to see the difference in 720p and 1080p

You're just wrong. If you used your phone at about 0.6 feet away, which is 18cm you could probably tell the difference. Furthermore, because the human eye (according to Apple) has a ppi of about 300, 400+ ppi is a tremendous difference from 286 (Galaxy Note) ppi. Which is just below our 330ppi limit.
Also you can't change the ppi (which is what we are talking about here) via root or anything. You can change the 'dpi', which is the scaling of the Android OS. The Z uses a 480dpi setting, which is a bit more than the display is (which is 443) but it scales better. The Galaxy Note has a set dpi of 320, which is also a bit higher than the 286ppi of the screen.
Regarding the Youtube video.... I'm not even taking you serious anymore. The camera and your monitor make a huge difference on that perception.

ok be in denial thats fine with me, i'll give you the point on the DPI and PPI but I just gave you an article on resolution and sizes, if you refuse it then that your right. I dont stare at my phone from 2in away so its fine with me. I dont pick phone like its a part of me or for esthetic looking, i pick it because its use as a phone, I am not going to sit there buy into the marketing gimmick, if I did i would have waited for the S4, as i'm sure the S4 outperform the Z in all hardware spec. the only thing is the plastic shell which doesnt bother me.
Guys I think the xperia SP performs better because it has a dual core processor. Most applications dont have support for multi cores or they dont take advantage of it.... even if they support more then one core most are optimized to 2 cores not 4. So the Quad core doesnt really make a difference if most apps arent optimized for it

Think the biggest factor is the benchmarks the SP excelled in was more to do with GPU performance that was run in its native resolution. Which was only 720p

Also not true. Since version 3, Android nativly supports multiple cores and can handle them by itself.

I tend to agree, quad core is not needed, RAM on the other hand....2 GB was the biggest upgrade ever, solve lag issue, launcher redraw problem. everything and anything can run on my Dual Core S3. So processor is not a big factor at all.
