[DISCUSS] List Country/carrier lockable/unlockable - Xperia Play General

Post if phone responds to fastboot command (unlock allowed) or nay.
Danish, carrier TDC, fastboot accepted! (bootloader can be unlocked)
(Mac, linux fastboot dont work, windows does)

Ordered without contract or Prepaid SIM "factory unlocked" from GUM Mobile ( http://www.gummobile.com/ ) - Bootloader is unlockable.

Edit: nvm what I just said here. Seemed that with the new android sdk they moved some files from the tools folder to platform-tools folder making fastboot not working properly, just copied all files from platform-tools to the the tools folder.
Getting this:

Does that mean my bootloader is unlockable?
Dutch, carrier: T-mobile (NL). Should be sim-locked but Can't test it.

Yep! It seems like you got lucky. Yours should be unlockable.

British, carrier Vodafone UK, appears to be unlock-able; tested with t-mobile sim and accepted it fine.

Yours can be unlocked, as it responds to fastboot. Congrats

i can confirm Tesco mobile (British) is also unlocked,
cant wait to see some mods going on

can some1 post a screenshot of a locked fastboot..
Thank you
Edit : any1 knows whens its Locked and unlocked
i heard its according if phone is Unlocked SIm...

Guys how is this possible if you are all buying from carriers. Don't they simlock there phones?
I hope Rogers keeps theres unlocked.

I think they don't Sim lock some phones in some stores as they sell for both Vodafone and for example Tesco or other carriers.
i haven't had any phone from places like phones4u that has been Sim locked this is before the smartphone stuff tho.

I work in a mobile phone shop in the UK. Sometimes, the first batch of handsets we have sold are unlocked. This has happened with numerous Android devices (Desire, Desire HD are the ones I know of).
I believe this is due to networks (or carriers if you are non-UK) wanting to get the devices on shelves ASAP.

Does explain why mine didn't come with an app that every new Dutch SE phone would have. Probably a first batch thing indeed.

In many European countries, carriers are not allowed to SIM-Lock the phones unless they're sold with a pre-paid contract. If they're sold with a regular bill-pay contract, the carrier is not allowed to SIM-Lock them. This is the case in Belgium, I think the Netherlands, Denmark, Germany and Austria. (Altho there are some exceptions like the iPhone). Also, there are a lot of resellers like Carphone Warehouse over here that sell the phones without locks on many different networks. They are not locked because they use the same model for all their contract partners.
Generally, Sim-Locks are a lot more rare in Europe than they are in the US.

In the netherlands simlocks are quite normal. I used to have a simlocked on a phone that didn't come with a contract or anything.
In Belgium on the contrary it's illigal to have a simlock at all, and I believe the same counts for austria but I'm not sure. Belgium Iphones are always without simlock for example.

True, I live in Denmark and my phone is not SIM locked. Yet, it has locked bootloader, doesnt respond to fastboot. So, SIM Llocked is not the only factor deciding if bootloader is locked.

rom ?

do you need to have a sim unlock before flashing the rom?
No.
SIM unlock - ability to use it on different networks (ATT, VERIZON, T-mobile....) meaning if you by a phone from T-mobile, if you sim unlock it, you can use it on AT&T or Verizon's network.
CID unlock - ability to install non T-mobile ROMs on it if you have a Tmobile phone... so for example, if you buy a phone from Tmobile, the CID lock on the device would prevent you from installing AT&T or Verizon's rom on it.
Most people typically buy a phone from a carrier, that is a Samsung, and it has all the typical Samsung logos on it, as well as a T-mobile logo on it. Everyone knows the phone is made by Samsung, and that it is SIM locked into the T-mobile Network. If you take a SIM card out of a AT&T phone, and insert it into this phone, it probably won't connect to the network.

But sometimes, Cell Companies hire companies like HTC to manufacture phones for them, that they can release as their own brand. For example, My phone is a "T-mobile Wing"... and it is sold only through T-mobile as if it were "made" by T-mobile... but when in all reality, it's made by HTC.
This "T-mobile Wing" doesn't have any other logos on it, besides "T-mobile", and T-mobile markets and sells the phone to the general public... in a sense "pretending" they made it.
Carriers SIM lock phones, because generally they cut people some sort of deal when buying the phone from... you'll often see deals such as Get this T-mobile Wing for "$300" if you open a new account or extend your contract by 2 years today ...etc..etc... but if you already have an account and have already extended your contract, you'll have to pay $499 for it. Since they are "giving you a deal" because they plan on locking you into a contract and getting money from you for 2 years ... they sell you the phone at a cheaper price.
In order to avoid, people buying let's say, an iPhone from AT&T/Cingular and then using it on T-mobile's network, they SIM lock them so that people can "only" use the iPhone on the AT&T network. Obviously it's also a tactic to get more people to switch over to their network... People who REALLY want an iPhone will switch carriers so that they can have an iPhone. So let's say, Apple was offering unlocked iPhones through their own site, it would most likely cost you a lot more than if you went to AT&T, and signed a 2 year contract with them.
Luckily we have a few smart people out there who are able to get around certain things such as SIM and CID locks in order to alleviate us from the clutches of "the man" .... that way we can do whatever we rightfully chose to do.

International Galaxy S4 i9505 on Docomo Xi LTE

I got an imported i9505 in Japan the other day. I have a contract with Docomo, and had them set me up with a micro SIM card, and to switch to a Xi (LTE) plan. Unfortunately, the first day I went, the guy set me up with spmode, which puts you on an APN that filters and rejects providing network access to any non-Docomo phone. I had to go in again after I read up more, and request that they take me off of the spmode service (which provides things like a Docomo email address which I don't need), and to sign me up for Mopera (I think spmode costs 315yen/month and Mopera was like 525yen/month). Once signed up for Mopera, I could then freely connect to the open.mopera.net APN, and am able to connect to their 4g LTE Xi network.

Hi, I realize that this post is rather old, so I hope, you are still reading this.
I am interested in your experiences with your i9505 in Japan
Specifically, do you know, which LTE frequency bands are supported?
I know it says LTE 800Mhz, 850Mhz and so on, but are the docomo E-UTRA bands 1 and 19 supported? Also for UMTS?
Or do you experience reception problems where people with Japanese models have no problems?
I really tried to find this info, but nothing awailable about the specific bands. Does that mean that "of course" all bands in the 800Mhz range are supported?
This page here says, that there are hardly any base stations in the 1500Mhz band, so not having that should not be a big loss, and 700Mhz is sheduled from 2015 onwards, so no problem here either. http://www6.atwiki.jp/k-p/pages/219.html
Also, for the Japanese model, there is 1seg and NOTTV listed for features. I know neither, but it sounds like television. Do you miss that?
Do you miss Felica, or is there maybe an app for that?

1seg is the tv service in Japan. There is no FeLiCa except on the Japanese version of the phone (which lacks NFC). I am not to sure on the 800mhz bands 18 and 19 (although band 20 using roughly the same frequencies is supported). Band 1 and 3 both are supported so you can connect to DoCoMo's Xi, Softbank LTE and KDDI's AU networks on 2100mhz and emobile on 1800mhz.
That should be enough service, at least inside cities where most of the spectrum is used by bands 1 and 3.

Thanks alot for the info. Do you know anything about the legality of using the phone in japan?
I recently read a few pages where Japanese people talk about the subject of using international phones.
The argument I found goes roughly like this:
- A phone needs the approval of the japanese authorities (shown by some T like mark)
- foreign phones don't have it.
- There is provision in the law, that travellers can use their phones (temporarily) while roaming as long as they are approved by FEC or Europe or so. (the phone is taken as the unit of handset and SIM, I understand)
- However, as soon as you put a japanese SIM in there, you are not roaming anymore, and so it's illegal.
I tried reading the law in question. It says "may be illegal" but for what I know, that might just be the japanese way of saying that you won't get death sentence for doing it.
Now, I know that you can rent Japanese "traveller" SIM cards from Softbank (formerly Vodafone) but on one of these pages someone wrote, he asked Softbank about it and turned out, the guy responsible for the SIM rental program didn't know about those laws. So anyone who is bored enough could go to the police and report them any time.

There are 3 components to the NFC-A/Felica system: secure element (which is only necessary for doing secure transactions), radio hardware, and antenna.
Antenna is in the battery (shared between Felica and NFC-A)
Radio Hardware is in the phone body (shared between Felica and NFC-A)
Felica SE is in the phone body, NFC-A SE may be in the sim (in the case that a pink sim is used).
The phone without a pink sim is perfectly capable of reading and writing NFC-A tags, and reading the non-encrypted areas of biometric passports, japanese drivers licenses, and zairyu cards (all of which are NFC-A).

Note 4 region locked?

As tittle said, does anybody know if Note4 is region locked in any way? Note3 was region locked and I think Samsung had to loose some sales because of that (I don't travel much outside the country and almost didn't buy Note 3 for that reason, if I was traveling more often, there is no way I would pick it up). Did they learned the lesson not to bite the hand that feeds them, or they still keep on pissing their customers away?
I have not heard anything either way.

So did I, but I don't think that works on the newest Android version, I also don't remember if you need root, if you do, the only method to root right now will trip the knox and possibly void your warranty.
I really think part of their poor sales figures is due to the stupid things they do, like region lock or knox warranty, even Apple which I dislike with passion doesn't do nonsense like that.
if your note 4 are region lock they don't provied it you will not get refunds in this wed site.

100% works
I have tried this With Galaxy Note 4 purchased in Saudi Arabia and it did not work in Indonesia.
Having shipped the phone back to Saudi Arabia and calling for about 8 minuets, the Indonesian SIM worked in Roaming mode (of course).
I recommend everyone to try this solution before paying for anything to anyone.
Thanks for the tip

There's a factory UICC unlock that comes on your Sprint/Boost factory firmware (Settings/System Updates). So you can UICC unlock for use outside the United States. You can also purchase a GSM unlocked variant from BestBuy if you plan on strictly using it outside the US.

Samsung has released the GS7 and GS7edge unlocked for all USA carriers

i just can't seem to find them on any site including samsungs
For what it's worth a Samsung rep in live chat told me they should be released by the end of the day
Would it be possible to flash the software of this unlocked variant to a carrier variant such as T-Mobile and effectively have an identical device?
According to The Verge:
The unlocked versions of the S7 and S7 Edge being sold in the US have the same hardware features as their carrier locked counterparts, including a Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 processor, 4GB of RAM, and 12-megapixel cameras. They are also water resistant and feature both fast charging and wireless charging. They also have support for Samsung Pay and full manufacturer warranties.

So probably no root or unlocked bootloader. The only advantage is no carrier-specific bloat.
looks like the model is G930UZKAXAA

I'll be waiting to see if anyone is able to flash a recovery.img tar without getting flash fail from Odin. (Flashing G30F's should be ok, it won't boot at all, but just to see if the bootloader accepts the flash!)
If successful, I will build TWRP within a few hours of the confirmation.

Nope. The carrier specific phones do not support the same LTE bands, and T-Mobile S7 likely won't get 4G speeds on Sprint b/c of that.

No carrier-specific bloat and full range of LTE bands that work on all US carriers as well as many world-wide carriers. This is huge for CDMA users like Sprint which were crippled from LTE bands working.
Anxiously awaiting someone posting a good deal on this beauty. Thanks in advance.

Can't see rooting an S7. I'm in the US, have the 930F...too many negatives on resale for rooting and tripping Knox... I've got Samsung pay working, great battery and debloated with package disabler pro....
May get this new unlocked for my wife...the S7 is a great phone....
I wonder how this phone would work on Project Fi. Probably suffers from the same issue as other unsupported phones (can't switch between Sprint/T-mo).

I chuckle a little bit when I read posts like this.
No disrespect intended, but you realize this is an XDA thread.
That's kinda what we do here.
Many of the features of that phone you're currently enjoying were added to it by the manufacturer as a result of all the rooting and modding of Android devices conducted by the community over the years.

Just contacted Project Fi support and they say no support for new S7, Nexus phones are required. No idea if that will change but that's their story today.

Yes, I realize it's an XDA thread... My nexus is my play around device... prior to Samsung putting knox on the devices, I used to root it and play like everyone else. Fact is, rooting the S7, tripping knox removes intended functionality and hurts resale...that's all I was conveying...
Cheers!

According to The Verge:
So probably no root or unlocked bootloader. The only advantage is no carrier-specific bloat.

But Carrier's lock bootloader, Samsung doesn't afaik? Or is this new with the US S7? The European S7 doesn't have a locked bootloader on its unlocked edition, why would they for the US? That'd be really close to discrimination.

Look at post #9 above. It's locked.

Would it be possible to flash the software of this unlocked variant to a carrier variant such as T-Mobile and effectively have an identical device?

Nope. The carrier specific phones do not support the same LTE bands, and T-Mobile S7 likely won't get 4G speeds on Sprint b/c of that.

While this answer is correct, the reason why is not.
All the US carrier variants are the same hardware-wise, which means that the hardware does support all the same bands but because the bootloader is locked you can't flash one variant to another.
The S7 is the first Samsung phone with a single hardware variant that supports all US carriers. As such all the US variants have also been assigned the same FCC ID. In previous Galaxy phones, each variant, because it had slightly different hardware (to support different bands) was required be tested separately for FCC approval then issued a separate FCC ID. However, starting with the S7, only one variant (using special testing firmware enabling all US bands simultaneously) was tested to receive FCC regulatory approval.
