[For Google] Websites that lag/have issues on Xoom - Xoom General

I started this thread to help improve performance when using the stock Google browser on the Xoom. While most sites are great and load up quickly, there are certain sites or portions of the site that are slow and to some, unacceptable regarding performance.
I invite those that experience issues with websites using the Xoom to post specifics of the issue including steps to reproduce and the URL. This will help to get the issue fixed in a more timely manner from Google. You can't fix something unless you provide details!
Please try the site several times first and if the issue is consistent, post the steps to reproduce the problem. I will post legitimate replies to Google for correction.

I've used the browser everyday for weeks, and the only site I had issue with was this one, which is probably due to the amount of elements and javascript it uses. But I use the XDA app mostly, so I don't care at all about it.

Please try it many times and report back if you have issues. If you no longer have a problem, it may be the ads. Gotta love the ads! This also needs reporting.

I visited another vbulletin forum and the same thing happened. I'm gonna say that's the common thread.

vBulletin doesn't have the smallest footprint... that **** does the works to browsers. Hence why I created my own forum system from scratch and don't use that junk. Great forum, but damn is it a hog.

I agree however, if it can work acceptably on all devices except Honeycomb tablets, it needs to be addressed by Google especially since it is commonly used.

Sending a message on eBay, the text has a tendency to disappear while typing, and is a bit laggy.

Nice! It's a much 'cleaner' interface than androlib.com, even if it doesn't have quite as many features. I see they're supporting the Palm catalog now as well. Very cool, as my girlfriend has a Pre Anyone know why they were down for so long? Hopefully Saurik will be able to add more features in the near future.

Please send me an e-mail (do not just reply to this forum post: e-mail will be much more useful for me) with a list of features you think are important. The three things on the public todo list (which should be done pretty soon) are: 1) fix the display of permissions, which is simply stupidly broken; 2) get "newest/latest stuff" working again; 3) rewrite the RSS feed mechanism to work with the new site architecture (which requires #2 to be finished first); and 4) allow comments to be browsed in a more meaningful fashion than "show a bunch of comments for this app". There are other features that will likely happen, but those are the only ones I'm saying /are/ to users ;P.

My e-mail address is on every website I run, including Cyrket's home page.
I go to great lengths to make the URLs on Cyrket readable:
/p/android/net.tastybits.heat/icon
However, this anal attitude towards URLs means that I will not make a URL that I can't support going forward. The category tree is simply not stable at this time, nor do I really want it to be considered "stable". However, the category ID numbers in the search URL actually are stable: those nodes I can rearrange and then guarantee I can support old URLs.
(Out of curiosity: why are you even caring about those URLs? The only URLs I'd expect would matter to anyone would be the URLs for the packages themselves, metadata about the packages, and the URL for "newest stuff", which still hasn't been rewritten into the website yet.)

Why do I care about pretty URLs?
I talk to alot of people about Android - DumbPhone friends, Android friends, and iPhone friends.
I have tested & reviewed many apps, and share this information with these friends.
In my talks with them, I often tell them about Cyrket, which I prefer over other sites like androidtapp.com or androlib.com due to their complexity (no disrespect meant to either operator of those respective sites).
In my opinion, I just prefer Cyrket with its simpler layout, basic information, and ease of navigation.
The other sites I find 'too much going on'.
Having a pretty URL makes for easier memorizing of a URL. It's also easier to write down later. All this is just easier, faster, better to share with someone else.
As the 'web master' or 'developer' of Cyrket.com, I would have thought you knew all this. Even if it doesn't change, I'm just saying it's a better user experience for visitors to have Pretty URLs throughout the entire site for uniformity.
On a personal note: I just tend to prefer my reference sites which are easy on the eyes with minimal distraction! Just as SpyderMS said in post#2.

I was saying that /I/ was "anal". I seriously spend hours fretting over the URL structure of Cyrket, which is why 99% of the website has such a beautiful URL structure. I dare you to find someone who spends as much time thinking about URLs as I do: that's why I used "anal" to describe myself.

Most of these other sites also have much worse URLs. AppTapp doesn't only because they create vanity URLs for every package they choose to make a review of (which is not practical, nor is it maintainable).

What I asked was why you needed fast by-memory URL access to a subcategory sort. You managed to find the /one/ thing in Cyrket that currently has a bad URL, and made it an issue about the entire website.
I then explained the reason that one thing has a bad URL and asked you why you felt that specific page had such high-priority for having a better URL, and now you are acting like I don't consider good URLs important.

(ATTN)ROM Hosting(DEVS)

So for quite some time, there has always been issues and complaints about users not being able to download roms from the links posted by the devs on new releases and/or updates (4shared, Rapid share, Mega upload to name a few)
with that being said they are always complaining and begging for someone who gets a complete download to re-upload with a mirror, to make their lives easier...understandable. But if there's one thing I know, "Most" devs hate it when users fill their threads up with a bunch of links...why? well that’s simple:
It confuses others (especially noobs) as to which link is the correct one and the one intended for download by the OP. This means that if someone put a faulty link/mirror that contained a bad file, un-signed zip, or their own custom version of the rom/mod that they decided to play "dev" with and screwed it up rendering it full of bugs...the Dev and/or OP has to deal with the complaints when that user comes back to post. Leaving him confused and dumbfounded as to what the hell they are talking about because nobody else is reporting these issues.
Download count just so happens to be very important to a lot of devs. It gives them a general idea of how many users are flashing their work, which can not only make them feel appreciated and needed by the community because of all the attention...but also create a ratio of problems to success. Example, 300 users download, only 50 come back to report bugs, the rest either don't post at all (I call them ghost readers) or give good feedback. Now, out of that 50 only 7 reported bugs can be legitimately confirmed, which means the other 43 people either did not follow directions clearly, or already had some other stuff going on that effected their experience. Why are these numbers important? Because, if the numbers of bugs are high...the dev knows to update quickly and correct things, if the number of user errors are high...the dev knows he needs to re-adjust his instructions or make them more clear and descriptive so that nobody misunderstands. And if the number of successful flashes are high...well...you know. And all of this can be based on number of downloads...which other users screw up when they post their own links!
Lost and forgotten is what all these mirrors, linked threads/topics, and uploaded fixes by random users become when the topic is over populated (especially big named threads like Eugene, CM, Wes Garner etc). So if the thread has 105 pages and an important link was dropped by a user that proved to be helpful way back on say...page 23! How in the hell is anyone who hasn't been following the entire topic to know that? And nobody in their right mind, who has a life, is going to sit there and skim all 105 pages. So if you must, or feel, that you have a useful link pertaining specifically to the topic that can help others, the best resolution would be to PM it to the OP, so that they can update the first post where all users can easily refer back to if need be.
Now with the why covered, let's move on the the what. And the what is what I have to offer:
A hosting service that I paid for out of my own pocket. This is my way of contributing to the community, as I do not offer donations, sorry. To keep things under control and fair I will only allow 3 request per week for access to this service. I'm not sure how many devs are registered and active but I'm quite sure there are a lot. Eventually all devs who are interested will have the opportunity, but for my own conveyance I will only take 3 request a week, because I will not be online everyday to take all request, this also give me the time to help each individual to get set-up and answer any questions they may have.
I do not discriminate by phone make or model. All devs are welcome to this offer regardless of what phone they developed for. However; I will only post this thread here in the Vibrant forums, well, because that's the phone I use. But Mods are more than welcome to sticky it or link the word to other locations so that all devs can read. My only rules are:

Yes, I already know this. But please understand this is specifically for xda...androidspin is its own website in itself, also still has its limitations as well as ads and opens new pages/tabs for downloads. My service does not do that, and is without limits.

Congrats I wish I had an unlimited bandwith host. I can get away with gigs of storage, but they caped me around 60gig a month.
Anyways hope it works out.
good luck, ive tried this a few times but seems like devs like those crappy upload sites. i'm gonna take a guess and say you are on a site like hostgator or something with "unlimited" bandwidth, watch it cuz its only unlimited untill you use to much resources.
Just an idea.
Why don't we create a distributed system using available tools/software like torrent files.
We need one or more torrent server/tracker and list of volunteers to be reliable seeders. Once you sign as a seeder, you will receive a list of # files you'll seed 24/7 until you receive an updated list.
I don't mind seeding 5-10 files 24/7.
We can retire any file at any time if there is no interest and archive it.
By archiving i mean switch to more "standard" way of hosting it like http or ftp access.
And when a new release is out the downloading will be even faster.

List sites that you frequent that revert to mobile versions

Title says it all. If we have a list of sites, some people here can contact them and hopefully get it resolved sooner rather than later. Take a proactive approach I always say... well not all the time, but you know what I mean.
Post the sites in a list format, and I will update this post with the URLs, then I will also post who contacted them. If a site is fixed, post here also so we can show resolution to this issue.
Also, if someone contacts some sites, and posts that they did so, show them some thanks. This needs to be a group effort
If enough people contact these sites, then they will add the user agent string to their site.
if you're not currently tracking the issue that I'm talking about: In Honeycomb, the browser's default user agent string is "Android"; in previous versions of the OS, it's "Android Mobile." This is meant to serve as a way for Web sites to differentiate between large-screen and small-screen Android devices and then respond appropriately. Thus far, however, most Web developers haven't implemented support for the two strings, which is why both are currently being treated the same.

HAHA agreed! the makeover SUCKS!!! And i love how the first post with the redone site said "Here is why our new site IS better" or something to that affect... anyhow all it does is let them advertise more effectively. the setup is terrible, so i too am happy to get the mobile version! no site should be that difficult to navigate or even just read!
Also i read that if you type "about:debug" in the browser it will give many more settings one of which is for desktop browsing. did it on my captivate running serendipity and got lots of new setting but no desktop browsing, but then the xoom is a tablet running honeycomb...

The importance of reporting bugs

One of the most annoying things to me as a software developer have been negative reviews or posts in forums I don't follow complaining of bugs when the user could have contacted me and I would have fixed the problem quickly. I think it's important to take the time to report bugs, both in software and firmware, to the developer.
For instance, last night I sent to Archos tech support a message about the problem with the OS clamping the clock rate to 800MHz in video players (too fast for some videos and too slow for Netflix). And today they responded:
Thank you for bringing this to our attention. We will be sure to pass this
information along to our software engineers and hope to have this corrected in a
future firmware update.

We'll see if they fix it, but I've done my job here.
I've had a happy experience with Overdrive recently, too. I found a minor bug where the dpad down keystroke was intermittently being ignored. I went to their website, sent them a polite and clear email. They acknowledged, passed it to the development team, and then a couple of days later said that they fixed it for the next release.
I've had similar experiences with a couple of other Android developers. For instance, I reported to Polarbit that one of their apps wasn't showing up on the Market for the Archos Gen8 despite all the hardware being fine. A couple of hours later I got an email from them acknowledging and requesting more information, and within an hour or so, the issue has been fixed. The Moon+ and Mantano developers have been very responsive.
The trick seems to be to write a polite and clear message, with good spelling and grammar (if you're writing from a non-English speaking country, I am sure they will excuse the spelling and grammar), writing in a way that suggests competence. I also often emphasize that I'm a software developer as that helps get me taken more seriously. If you're not a developer but an experienced user, it's worth mentioning that. Offering to test fixes is also a good idea.

Samsung has NO customer forums? Really?

I just went to the Samsung site looking for their Customer Forums where could report some bugs in their latest OTA and suggest some improvements.
THERE ARE NONE.
Seriously, a multi-billion dollar company with NO way for their customers to interact, get problems solved or make suggestions. Nothing. It is inconceivable to me that in the year 2012 a company the size of Samsung would be in the stone ages of customer interaction.
Want to know how they get customer feedback? You log on and post a review of the product. That's it! No interaction, no feedback, no idea if anyone even saw what you wrote - you just post a review and pray.
Yeah you can go to Samsung's Facebook page and post something on their wall but that's not a proper forum.

Massive fail Samsung. It's clear from some of the changes they made in the last OTA that they aren't listening to the users.

That's probably why they don't have forums. Not enough people ranting. You'll have to forgive me. I didn't research whether Samsung had customer forums. I just assumed they weren't living in 1960.
I am endeavoring to report some bugs on their Facebook page. I have no idea if anyone else has already reported these or if there is follow-up as their "forum" has no apparent structure. Will report back if I get any feedback.

I've been looking for its own forums few years back, and find NONE. :cyclops:
They rather use a facebook page, which we don't know the page is being maintained by who.
But, if you need a fast response, you can try their website, there's a LIVECHAT down there.
Facebook is really a pathetic idea to make it as the main forum of such a big company (in my opinion).
If facebook is being used as an additional media, then yes, it's a good idea.

Samsung needs a Web and Android App accessible Support database.
From 1979 to 2002 I was an IBM Mainframe Systems Programmer at UF in Gainesville Florida, then at the School Board of Alachua County Florida.
I watched large companies like IBM and CA move into the web era with their Support. I moved with them from phone calls and mailing fix tapes to Customer Searchable Databases with user entry for new issues, and with Downloadable Fixes for resolved issues.
Of course, way back then issues for my organization affected 10s of thousands of people where resolving an issue meant dealing with only one person in our organization.
Moving forward to today, we've got 10s of thousands of people and many, many more who all need their individual fixes. Very time consuming compared to dealing with one person.
This is one reason why more and more OTA forced SW updating is happening and why the big companies are pushing cloud computing. Such as Google evolving the Chrome platform; Adobe offering Creative Cloud; and VMWare and IBM competing for hosting Enterprise virtual computers.

Is it just me or do 80% of their Facebook Support moderators look like complete burnouts?
If a Forum is too hard for them how about a simple Suggestion Box where users can report bugs directly to the Design Team?
My faith in their meeting future needs with OTA's is greatly diminished. Hopefully they will surprise me.

I think you should put in an application to work for the Samsung Design Team, you seem like their kind of guy. :cyclops:
They used to have customer Forum. I was a member. They were so heavily censored, that you could say virtually nothing negative.
When the Galaxy S was having GPS issues, a class action suit was initiated about the GPS problem. I posted this fact and my post was edited to eliminate the sentence stating that. My post appeared but the words "Class Action Lawsuit" magically disappeared!
Moderators would actually cut pieces out of your posts before they would appear.
I then tried to send a private message to another forum member about the censorship and they censored and blocked the private messages as well and then sent me a message saying any more communications of that type would get me banned.
I then posted a second time to the main forum complaining that they were censoring negative posts and was in fact banned from the forum. So there isn't much of a point to a Forum where you aren't alowed to communicate.
So perhaps they just decided to institute the ultimate form of censorship and eliminate the forum altogether.

Oh well, they make nice tablets and if we get the same software as the Note II we will all be happy campers.
