[DISCUSS] Unlocked Bootloader Dilemma - Xperia Play General

Ok so after doing some research I found out that only Xperia Plays that are sim-unlocked have the ability to unlock the bootloader.
Where am I supposed to buy a sim-unlocked Xperia Play. If I bought an Xperia Play then sim unlocked it will that work.
Why is everyone so happy when probably 2% of all Xperia plays sold will have this feature?
Source

Just look for websites that sell the phone without a contract or prepaid-SIM.
There ought to be some like this around where you are. You have to make sure you buy a "factory unlocked" phone. I bought mine from http://www.gummobile.com/ but they only sell the European version of the phone.
You can probably also get unlocked versions of a phone in Sony Ericsson/Sony stores.
You should also take into consideration that you'll most likely not need the unlocked boot loader. For most people that just want to use the phone normally and have some little extra-features, root will probably be enough already. It'd be like one of the Motorola Droid phones from late. Just look into the Droid 2/X forums to see what's possible with those.

Do you guys think that the developers might be able to unlock one that is sim-locked?

That'll be pretty hard, as we have seen with the Droid 2/X/Milestone and Sony Ericsson X10. The Sony Ericsson was X10 recently... Well, not unlocked, but at least worked around. Motorola's Devices remain uncracked. Still, as I said, you'll probably be able to do most things with the phone even if the boot loader is locked for you.

I totally understand that but here is the thing. I am choosing between the atrix and this phone.
In terms of how long a device is supported depends on the development community. The atrix has a locked bootloader but really advanced hardware. The Play has older hardware and probably outdated soon but if the bootloader is unlocked it should make it last longer. Look at the G1.
Whats giving me hope is that sony said it will unlock the bootloader and we have geohtoz on board.

I wouldn't count on Geohot. When he gets the phone and realizes that he's able to run almost anything he wants on it right from the get-go (as this is an Android device), I think he'll loose interest.
As for your choice of devices: Do you want to play more involving and deep games on the go? Get a Play.
Do you want to have a phone that's very fast and plays almost everything perfectly but has a screen that limits your enjoyment of gaming to very simple time wasters? Get an Atrix.
It's that easy. I wouldn't really look at the stats, both phones will be almost equally outdated by the end of the year. However, since the Play (hopefully) has some Sony Computer Entertainment Steam behind it, it might not get tossed aside as quickly as Motorola Phones are.

I will probably be playing GranTurismo1 and 2 through an emulator a lot and maybe a few classics. That is all the gaming I see myself doing. But I also want a phone that is very fast...
So what should I get. Which phone do you think will have a better development community like I said the G1 is outdated but its still supported by the developers.

You have the choice. I'd say the Atrix probably will get more developers than the Play, just because Motorola has more people following, it's the first dual core phone and more leaned towards the "Buisness" user, which, let's face it, most developers probably are. But the Play is incredibly much better for playing games on and by no means slow. So, your choice

I kind of had the feeling the play would attract more developers because a lot of gamers are also hackers at heart. I'm sure I cant go wrong with either one but I'm still having a hard time choosing.

Droid X has a locked bootloader or "how motorola killed the Droid X for me"

i was really looking forward on getting myself a droid/milestone X/2 when it's available in europe. but i just read that the droidX (and maybe all upcoming motorola devices according to http://community.developer.motorola...OMs-and-Motorola-s-Android-Handsets/ba-p/4224) will have a completely locked bootloader as the original milestone had. it's as of today not possible to flash a custom rom on a >7 month old milestone, how weak is that?!
although i like the hardware of the moto-devices and really wanted one, this is definitly a no-go for me and defeats the purpose of android as a open(source)/linux os! i'm done with motorola, just ordered a galaxy s which is completely open!
i don't believe that motorola cares if 10.000 geeky people won't buy theire device because it's locked but it would nevertheless be good to show them that we care!
i'm curious what others think about that!
I think it's horse**** that they are locking it
I mean what's it to them if we can flash our phones??
Maybe they don't want their rom software to be leaked out? besides that I see no other reason for this

that's my point. if i buy a piece of hardware, i should own it completely and do with it what i want! also one would think that motorola would (or at least could) appreciate a bunch of developers modding and patching their devices to make them more appealing to the community. i just installed cm6 (froyo) on my htc magic. it works better than ever, how cool is that! would not be possible with a locked bootloader...
example milestone: although no custom rom's can be booted (the bootloader boots only moto-signed kernels) the device can be rooted and so it should be no problem to get a rom-dump. so that can't be the reason...
I was ready to pull the trigger on the Droid X until I heard this. I hate it. You are right, we buy the phone we should own the phone. I still might buy this phone, a vote of confidence to the devs.
I want the large screen. There's nothing out there with as large a screen. The evo, but I've already been burned by that. Maybe if they swap the screen for a better one.
I'm just as angry at Motorola, but I'm still going to purchase a Droid X. It has everything I'm looking for in a phone hardware-wise, and I can't wait any longer to dump the dumbphone I've been using for years. I'm a huge fan of tweaking every piece of technology I have (e.g. hackintosh netbook just for kicks), but I'm going to stick it out with a one-year contract on the Droid X until a better phone comes along.
I've taken a look at the Galaxy S/Fascinate, but it looks far too much like an iPhone to appeal to me, rootable as it may be. Samsung's post-release support is also less than stellar. As closed as Motorola may be by using this bootloader, they are still providing 2.2 to the original Droid this summer, which is more than can be said of a /lot/ of manufacturers.
Yea I had it preordered and everything til I figured out they locked it down, guess they are okay with losing sales by turning unto an apple type company stupid

i agree. i don't like the iphony-look of the galaxy-s either and i feel like the droid X casing is much more stable. also the omap seemed more appealing to me than samsungs hummingbird. and so on ...
while i think it's a good thing that motorola supports their older devices with updates (at least they do with the droid) my point is/was that a open device enables the community to push the software further ahead. for instance: atm. i still have a htc magic. i just installed cm6 running froyo about a week ago. my device is running better and faster than ever. this would not be possible with a locked bootloader. i would be at the mercy of htc to supply me with an update "sometime in the future", quite frustrating ...
i just don't understand their reasons for this! if it's all just about warranty they could implement a "root and unlock" feature in the settings which would void your warranty e.g. by sending a request to a moto-server or something similar.
maybe it has something to do with drm-stuff as i also wondered that one can only use the (awesome) hdmi-out for self-made media ... kills >50% of the potential of the hdmi-out in my opinion.

i hope the best for you mate. maybe it's not that bad and in 2 weeks we are laughing about motorola because some 14 years old hacker has already torn the bootloader apart
I am officially passing on the x droid2 and whatever else Motorola decides to release sorry but I would rather have an open galaxy s than a locked down droidx. IPhone like ui can be changed with a launcher. But their isn't much hope for a double locked bootloader
whoops... has root
Am I wrong to say that the Milestone is still stuck at the OS ver. that it was sold with? And if so, I hear that 2.2 is coming to the X by the end of the summer. I'm sure and exploit can be found in the update process, or hope so.
I'm going to switch to this, simply because I believe that the devs WILL find a way to get around this problem. This is XDA we're talking about, along with a bunch of other communities dedicated to this stuff. Someone will find a way to pull it off, it's just a matter of time. But I plan on having this phone for at least a year, so I have the patience for it.

i think you explained 2 reasons for the lock down.
1 is warranty issues
2 is that motorolla can control the life of their product. if after 2 years they give updating the software then you'll be left in the dust and forced to upgrade if want new features.
it's like dlc for games. what used to be free by modding communities has now become a way to squeeze more money out of gamers.
I also agree with you on point 2. This phone is pretty powerful even for me. I consider myself a power user but dont really see how I need a faster phone that this.
This phone, If completely hacked, can have a very long lifespan.
this takes one moto dev
to be on the modder's side.
All this takes is one dev to mess with an official moto update, and this will be tossed due the massive amount of phones that are bricked.
total BS. Knowing Verizon, and why they were late jump on the android bandwagon(because they couldn't "control" an open source opertaing system), this probably came from Verizon pushing Moto to do this. Moto is so desperate to corner the market(unlike HTC) with Verizon, they said yes'maam. Sure no problem you are giving ungodly sums of money why cant we "scratch" your back.
bull****
Let's say that we DON'T unlock this phone.... Would anyone be surprised to see Motorola keep up to day within months of releases in the future???
I see people mentioning the reasoning for it being locked it to control the life of the device.... But seeing how powerful this is and how it is you could say Moto's Flagship model, wouldn't it be int their best interest to keep their customers happy????
Or does everything sell and do you really think they will fall behind on updates...??
Seriously if you really hate the device being locked this much work on an email. I will be shooting an email over to Motorola and Verizon Wireless Customer Support. I can post the email that I am sending on here if you guys want, when I finish typing it.
As for the device being locked it is extremely sad, but many hardware developers are starting to do this. The thinking is that the more they can control what the user does the better the end experience is. That is hardly the truth so just keep cracking the devices so that they get the message we want our own control on the device.
Other than that good luck to all the dev crews out there working to crack the device.
i second the email plan. if enough people fight for an open device, motorola will listen...

Nope. Every single Droid and Droid X user could email Motorola and they wouldn't care unless it affected sales. The bottom line speaks the loudest. Hell, more than that, it's the ONLY line that speaks

here's the part that i don't get. Yes it's annoying that moto is so locked down, but it's not like it was any surprise to anyone. They have a history of it, a well known history. They've been working on the droid X since it came out, with about no success, and yet everyone that bought the atrix is screaming about how it should be broken. My question is, if you really wanted a hackable phone, why did you choose this one? You could have gone with something else, even if that meant waiting for other phones to come to AT&T. i believe at&t is launching something like 22+ phones this year?

I think that some people bought the phone because Motorola said that they would provide a solution that allowed developers to access the phone (these people are the "Good Faith" purchasers). I believe that Motorola said it first on their YouTube account (after the Motorola employee responsible for replying to comments there said basically what you said above but with fewer words and in a rather rude tone) and then again on their support forums where they said that they hoped to have a solution in place before the 30-day AT&T return policy expired. Motorola may also have said something similar on their Facebook page but I'm not sure.
Other people bought the phone because they didn't understand that Motorola's encrypted bootloaders have never been broken. They are the ones that say stuff like "everything's hackable", which may actually be true but is meaningless in reality unless you also include a timeframe and I don't think that most people want to wait ten trillion years for a brute force crack of a bootloader.
I, on the other hand, decided to wait and see what Motorola would do before making a purchase and so far it's not looking good but I am still hopeful.

this . exactly this. when Moto said they will give some access to devs. i thought they are going the HTC way and not Sony way.
now HTC went Moto Way and Sony went the HTC way.
i mean, how stupid can these companies be ? seriously ? sony released the Xperia X10. a beauitiful device and early in UK. people didnt buy it because it was locked. Sony learned from their mistake. new phones? open for you to play with.
HTC ? thery were doing fine. alot of sales. nice devices. they saw Sony failing because of their locked ****. they saw Motorolla devices are not selling very high after they locked them down " thus, sales of new the devices is much less than the droid 1 " as far as i know " i dont have data "
how hard is it to understand when a phone has no community, its a DOA phone ?

i did. my only concern is about the screen brightness, from the videos i have seen its fine. i know its not a powerful device like tegra 2. but i am in for the gaming since i am gamer " speaking of which. i know its OT but how is the 3DS ? pass till NGP ?"
i think PS emulator and N64/SNES/GEn Emulators will be amazing on this phone and i will be finally able to have all the old classics on one system + whatever new games comes out will be fine as well.
looking at tegra zone specific games, i dont have much hope to get alot of games on it. and that difference in the games isnt even big at all.
plus the phone looks sexy as hell with its curves. and the screen is really pretty. i know its an LCD but for some reason sony screens look much better than a normal LCD screen, " and if the xperia play is SLCD, then i am happy panda "

I'd wait for the NGP, mostly because of a personal distaste for the screen tech of the 3DS.
As for the Play, I'd be concerned about a lot more than just the dim display. Battery life, an outdated processor, and RAM specs that aren't even really in line with last-gen tech all make it seem like one would be better off buying a more future-ready phone that's compatible with the Android Playstation games. Especially if bought on contract -- in 2 years the Play will be 4 years outdated. I was really looking forward to a solid gaming phone, but this just doesn't seem to be it. Now by no means am I saying the Atrix is the better gaming alternative...only that the Play has some seemingly unsurpassable issues that dedicated gaming controls can't make up for. Then again...until the phone actually comes out, who knows?

Now that Sony Ericsson has taken a leap forward which really is a surprise considering that they have taken a tough stance on unlocking anything. This would put more pressure to Motorola if they need to get a bigger piece of the pie. For sure Motorola is surprised that Sony Ericsson took a different path.
After all, it does make sense that if you have a great piece of hardware and you let the community take a hold of it, word will spread and more consumers will take a note and purchase it.
Guaranteed that ATnT is probably disappointed with some consumers returning their Atrix. I also doubt Bell Canada is breaking open the champagne here when across the store there are more ppl lining up for the iPAD2 than for the Atrix.
The ball is in Motorola's court. Time for them to make a move and less replying on facebook.

After a while i noticed that the buttons and the slider werent as strong as they used to be, i disregarded it but it became worse and worse. I take amazing care of all my phones, i can't really remember a time when i've dropped one! And hell, i wouldnt even put my phone on a flat surface because i worry about grit underneath it xD
Eventually we got root, this bought life back into the phone but as i am simlocked, no unlocked bootloader for me... Also we didn't get that many "good" games. Apart from gameloft ones and some EA ones... However i mostly played LSD and some other ps1 titles on fpse
At about this point me (and im sure a few of you) realised that this phone is going... nowhere. Its not quite the "Playstation phone" i thought it would be.
So now... its going. Im going to go back to my motorola defy and stay there for a while.

wow dude, have some patience. Good games don't comes right away. Plus, take a look at the n64oid. I've spent some good ass quality time playing Zelda OOT. I've much faith in this phone and i think we'll see some real good games this year. But sorry if you don't like it.. it's your loss
I was very excited about minecraft coming out for it but i don't know...
As for old skool games, I completed pokemon gold and yellow on it (and super mario 6 gold coins 2)

well, i'm not trying to make you keep the phone. If you wanna buy another one, do it
Yeah man, go ahead and change your phone, the Xperia PLAY is my first smartphone...
and I got it almost for free on a cheap 18 month plan.
So far it has not let me down on anything... and I currently more games than I can actually play, and with the emulators currently available is almost a non-limited game source.
However if I decide to change my phone, the only one available in Mexico better than the PLAY is the Galaxy S2... but no way, I will fit a humoungous phone like that on my pocket, also the price is a big step up, and I will surely miss my dedicated game pad... So there's no way out for me just yet (not that Im looking for one)
Currently I feel like the slider part is a bit more loose and the X button is more difficult to press on time (is like it is a little bit more "pressed" than the other ones), but no BIG issue just yet... I still have 10 months under warranty, so I can change it later for a new one and sell it $$$.
Im concerned too about where is this phone going, but I will gladly wait, because there is no better option for me right now.
We will miss a you as a PLAY user, because there more of us in here the more support we can get from DEVs and SE.
What does the defy offer that you don't get from play? You gotta be kidding.. Going with Motorola's lmao

I think someone expects too much. Honestly, I've found this phone to have lots of life in it, and it's not exactly going nowhere, what with all the development going on by people on this very website. Yeah locked bootloader sucks and yeah it would be nice to have a fix released today but to just give up after a couple months because you aren't getting exactly what you want...well, maybe you need to get out more, see how life really works.
Suck it up muffin, or leave in silence.
slider and button problems already? jeez what have you been doing to your phone? I bought mine shortly after it was released and it's still good as new.
and yes, games don't come overnight. patience is indeed a virtue. also, your phone choices are a mismatch.. Xperia Play against Defy? OMFG it's ridiculous
my missus has the defy and the only reason she has it is because she is a dozy bint who treats a phone like makeup, pop it in the bag and sling it on the floor when it's needed.
that's why it's the perfect phone for her but other than that it's ****e.
it's your choice what you do, not sure why you feel the need to let us all know though, not sure anybody cares?
It'd be nice of you to fulfill your bounty pledge
I am glad the people who have no patience are leaving and getting **** phones in comparison.
Like people who go from Android to iphone are so fail.
Less whinging here if all the the complainers change phones because they couldn't wait. Some phones don't ever get updates
I think some people are expecting to much. This is a phone after all not a dedicated gaming device.
The Xplay plays all the same games any other phone you get will do but other phones dont have gaming controls this is what it comes down to (for me anyways ). I cannot see how you would want to trade playing emulators + fpse with real controls for crappier gaming...
Even without root and an unlocked bootloader this phone still has alot going for it, no other phone can offer the gaming experience this phone offers and it does the job as a phone well in my opinion.
You may just be unluckly but i hammer my gaming pad and slider and i have even droped it once and its still seems fine.
You have warranty/insurance right? Well whats the problem if it breaks get it replaced...
yh this phones annoys the f out of me but its still under devolpment u wont find a better game phone becouse proper games aint been made yet

Why is everyone trying to flame replicant for trying to open a discussion on the pro's and con's of the device, and the reason why he has decided to sell it??
This is the whole point of xda, people share there experiences and ideas, Have you ever though that a thread like this where people express there feelings about a device is usefull for people who are undecided about weather to buy the play or not.
How are people ment to make an informed decision when the first time someone says something bad about your precious device, all you fanboys jump on them like a group of thugs ... pathetic

Anyways i hear you androhero, hate the flaming when people is all but praise and good saying about a device wether it's here or another forum
The problem with posting this kind of opinion in this forum is that, if it's wrong, you're not giving any valuable information, and if you're right, you're just telling people they're a bunch.of losers for.buying this phone.
This thread belongs in a general Android thread where it can actually be read by.people considering the Play. In here, you can assume that everyone has the phone and you risk this kind of response.

Sony announced a partnership with HTC to continue making PS certified handsets. Also PS Suite is getting renamed to PS Mobile.

It's just sad to see a company this lost, they don't even know how to stand up on their own, and they have never knew.
And this time I bet that they are going to fail even more with the PS-certification-idea and the concept of a smart-phone with gaming performance.
Perhaps we will maybe see the same shell of the Xperia Play but with the other equipment that the Sony-engineers had with the HDMI-output or MHL-capable USB, but it depends on how lost Sony feel I believe.
And one thing I know for sure is that, even if it stands HTC on the device, I won't buy it and let Sony make a profit out of me again, hope they just don't spread their dirt to HTC.
And may I ask for the source so I can read some more around the news perhaps?
Thanks in advance.
Friendly regards RazerBlader
I should have never switched from HTC to Sony Ericson at the first place.
Damn. Gamepad.
But, seriously I hope HTC decides to release a phone with a dedicated gamepad with this shiny new PS certificate.

I like how there was no mention of the Play when they talk about bringing gaming to Android. It's like the shameful bastard child that lives in the attic . If you watch the conference, the HTC announcement pretty much kills any possibility of a Play2 so now we can finally lay those to rest.

I don't see it happening. They released the phone+gamepad and it didn't go so well. It doesn't seem cost effective anymore to add a gamepad which we know has issues with ICS. HTC will probably keep the handset thin and lightweight using on-screen controls.

i wish samsung or HTc had game expedience like sony , i'm sure they support was better than sony-liar
I highly doubt Sony will allow HTC to create a phone with a dedicated game pad. I believe they will want to keep that idea in house, the playstation certification is just allowing ps store and ps pocket for their new devices, similar to the Xperia s
Not that it matters, everything announced from last years e3 concerning phones turned out to be vapourware
I have never cared for HTC or its sense UI. I realize there are probably more fans of HTC's sense UI then any other UI overlay. That aside I would love it if every manufacturer made at least 1 phone a year with stock vanilla android. And a for HTC with the Play mobile. I dont see them making a gamepad phone anytime soon. Remember HTC announce some months ago that people preferred thin phones over phones with big batteries. Personally I like the slight chubbiness of the PLAY, yeah its thicker then most phones but then with the gamepad I think its just right. So I really do not see a gamepad+phone from HTC if they are sticking to the "thin is in" routine.
What will happen to our beloved Xperia Play ?

THIS gamepad has issues with ICS, and the original programming and setup of the phone. Doesn't mean it can't be done with a new pad designed for ICS from the ground up.
Not holding my breath though

Sony has already resigned it to the dustbin. In hindsight, it was foolish to believe that Sony could make a device which was equally good at gaming and being a smartphone.
I'm going to keep the PLAY as a decent handheld emulator and buy a phone which sole purpose is to be a great smartphone (HTC One X?).

At around 1:44 in that clip you can hear how he says "and we are going to leave that feature", so don't dream to much about something more like this.
But then I see more why they change their name from PS suite to PS Mobile so that it will fit in even more into their new thinking, and as a positive effect to see them deliver this PS pocket for every brand is that they don't have to develop everything on their own.
And you can practically say that they are giving away their own trademark (Playstation) for free (with a cost for the certification of course) and throw it like a bone at the community so they maybe get some development for free(?)
And get their trademark even more respectable, and perhaps you will see more real game-pads in the future, but not from Sony themselves perhaps, at least as I somehow manage to turn the facts around xP
And (the last and ) if it someday comes out an HTC with a real physical game-pad, PS certificate and real potential hardware added to the receipt, then I wouldn't doubt to get it since HTC seems to be more aware of how they wanna delight their customers with development and updates, so maybe that could be Sonys rescue in the long race, to let every other manufacturer have a taste of the Playstation-trademark in their devices

*its lead not leave

Xperia X upgrade over z1c.

It may be wrong section to ask. As i was using xperia z1c, i thought it would be better to ask here.
I'm thinking sony's management is full of retarded people. They cry about how they are not making any profit and they take steps like dumb people or think people are dumb or so naive to buy their phone.
Today they have updated the price of xperia x around 50k with sd 650. Xiaomi also has same phone in 10k, i know they have poor quality but sony treats their low end phone in same way no os update.
http://www.sonymobile.com/in/products/phones/xperia-x/
Now my question is that if they are going to release x performance, what will be the price. I think 1 Lakh.
I seriously doubt the existence of sony xperia in future.
Well. Matter of point of view and it is your choice and money.
However - tell me who else would give you code to legally unlock bootloader or cooperates with developers except their own..

yeah! I know that but sd 650 for 50k.
I don't think sony releases phones for people on xda only, and imo xda members include only 25% of sony's sale.
There is no use of unlocking bootloader for common man.
And i think nexus will be better choice this year, if x performance is over 60k.
Not that.
Not everyone is developer nor should be but if software is opened developers can make it better and that saves money for those who are active enough to do some work for their own benefit.
When I see half of my data transfer spent on advertisement and I have no choice to put it on hold - I am bit of pissed off.
That's why I bought factory phone, with no branded ROM, rooted and tuned it.
Money initially spent on device free of crap will return to me later.
There are errors, too. Nobody even dreams that GSM companies will correct them, not until next OS release which may never occurr.
