Naturally, being the replacement for the well-known Samsung i9000 Galaxy S, the Galaxy S II has to fit the very large shoes of its predecessor. And judging by the initial impressions from quickly playing around with the device – it does pretty well. The user interface is ridiculously snappy and the phone, despite its mammoth size, feels alive and light.
And just to give you a taste of what kind of performance we are talking about, we’ve prepared a short video of the Galaxy S II playing a 720p HD YouTube video straight within the stock Android browser.

Wow so smooth and fast!!

Most people don't know it, but 720p youtube videos play fine on my SGS with 2.3.3 as long as I don't use the flash player from the market. The SGS II is going to be on another level I'm sure, but 720p flash files are already conquered.

Then how do you play them ?

It comes with a pre installed flash player. Which i suppose, like the atrix's own, is optimized specifically for the galaxy s.
I have a captivate right now, and it's running 2.2, and whilst it can play 720p youtube videos, they are choppy, so not much use. More than likely however, it will be able to play it more smoothly when a T&t rolls out the gingerbread update for it. If they ever plan to. =.=

No you don't understand there is a trick to play 720p flash videos butterly smooth (even Underclocked at 800Mhz btw) on a Galaxy S running froyo or up, he was not talking bout playing it straight within the browser. I just asked him to figure out if he really know this trick or not

It largely depends on the bit rate of the video. I could make a video that has a resolution of 480X272 that even the SGS II could not play. Bit rate is...not everything, but most things, with video.
Also, it sounds more like you're viewing the HTML 5 version of it than the Flash version, but IDK.

I was going to wait for the G2x. IDK now. Is this coming to t-mobile?

Simply put - yes. Not using the flash version from the market. Both HD videos from gametrailers and 720p videos from gsmarena play fine.
EDIT: It's actually running the 10.1 version of the flash player

@ tou
There is stutter for 480p videos. But It is only present at the start, due to the loading and I guess the cpu getting ready. After the start, it plays like any other flash video.

Yes the G2X is for TMobile although the specs of the SGS II surpass any device announced to date.

HD2 vs N1 video quality

What is the deal with the N1 youtube video??..or video in general. It is complete crap. My wife got the HD2 a few days ago and we pulled up the same youtube videos and I was shocked. My video on the n1 was choppy pixelated and in some cases it didn't even use the entire screen.
What is going on? I don't watch a ton of youtube videos on my phone but thought it was just the videos that were uploaded.
I paid $574 for this phone and I cant watch a decent mp4 video. Am I missing something. I currently have the M Desire ROM but had CM and and Stock for video was terrible.
Any thoughts peeps?? That said I love my n1 but feel like I have been sold short.
Did you play the video on HQ? Not sure if you're aware, but you have the option to do so when you're on YouTube. let me know the outcome. I love the video quality on my N1.
Hold on. I am quite certain that you're doing something wrong. When connecting to youtube, are you using WiFi? Are you choosing to watch the Video in High Qaulity? When playing movies onto your phone, what format are you using? I don't know if there is a native format that works, but I paid the 1.99 for ACT1, which plays all my files very well. I am certain that the 'video quality' is much more intense on the N1 due to the AMOLED screen, how can you even compare to a TFT? Are you watching a movie while walking down the street on a sunny day?
Are you sure you are watching the high quality version of the video? I believe the N1 defaults to the low quality videos on the youtube app. The high quality ones on my N1 looks great imo.

Why does video on 2.1 suck compared to 1.5?

I've tried re-encoding the movies and messing with the settings, but I always end up with much crappier video than when it played on 1.5. I don't remember 1.5 having the banding issues in the darker colors, but in 2.1 it's really quite horrible. Has anyone found a solution to this? Even youtube videos look like garbage. I thought the final release would possibly fix this, but it hasn't.
They have the 2.1 source now, so expect fixes in the camera since thats everyone's problem lol maybe they can implement 1.5 camera in the 2.1 rom who knows.

Devs had 2.1 source before, and have had for a long time. What devs do NOT have is source for the HTC .29 kernel (yet).
It's not really the camera I'm talking about... I probably should have been clear. lol Sorry, I was just a little disappointed..
I have some movies that I ripped from my dvd collection that I watch once in a while on my phone. On 1.5, I never noticed any "Banding" issues. The video would be smooth and look really good. But since I updated to 2.1 (custom roms with leaks) the video just looks like crap, especially if it's darker. You can see pixelated areas and severe banding. Especially in Total Recall and The Thing from Another Planet (1950s one). The darker areas are just crappy looking. Tons of banding issues and pixelation.
Those of you who dont know what banding is..

Assuming that ad copy is accurate.
And also assuming that this Euro version is the same hardware as the US version (which it clearly isn't since it's SLCD and not SAMOLED - who knows what other internal changes it might have).
We've been led to believe in the past that the lack of 720p video recording was a hardware bandwidth limitation...no software will change that if it's true. We could do 720p if/when some gets around to hacking in a method, but it will be at reduced framerates. I suspect a lower resolution at higher framerates will usually be a more pleasant viewing experience.
The i9023 (as opposed to the US i9020) has a Super LCD screen instead of a SuperAMOLED one but I suppose as part of the screen swap, it can capture true 720p video.
That would be the most bull**** thing Samsung haf done yet.

Sent from my Onyx CM7 Google Nexus S!
Is it possible to upscale to 720i instead? Similar to tv's?
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App
Before everyone jumps to conclusions, keep in mind that the original launch page for the Nexus S (http://www.google.com/nexus) said it would be able to take "HD videos" on the Features page while stating only 720x480 on the Specs page. As we all know, 720x480 is "Enhanced Definition" at best, not HD.
So this could be a similar situation. Or, it might have a different camera module that has the on-board video processing chip.
Personally, I think the 720x480 video the original NS takes are actually pretty decent, and I'd much prefer the battery life improvements of an AMOLED screen over SuperLCD.
I also think the video is quite good already, but higher res wouldn't hurt. But the still camera needs some work, my NS is not nearly as good a my old vibrant.

this has been discussed before...720x480 is not HD

these make sense, i never thought of it that way, i always knew that the GS phones had more codecs than the NS because of touchwiz and such but i never related those codecs and HD recording :O
The problem is, if its a codec issue then how do you get it onto the sns if its a matter of Google not paying for it? I don't see how anyone can fix that. How do you even get codecs on this phone? Sounds like there's no legal way to do it right?
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App
miss read ..removed
Are you still convinced that it's an hardware problem?
http://developer.android.com/guide/appendix/media-formats.html
Read under encoding, and you realize by yourselves that H.264 encoding it's not supported on android 2.3.3 and before. First version of android with H.264 encoding is Honeycomb (3.0).
So it's definitely a codec thing.
Considering one of the lead Android devs said on his twitter that 720p recording is not available on the Nexus S due to hardware bandwidth limitation, I tend to believe him. I am not sure why we have ANOTHER 720p thread either. There is already a longggg one open that talks about all of this. The ad is incorrect. The SLCD version is the SAME as the AMOLED version, minus the screen.
I think it takes great pics and decent video but you kind of expect HD coming from a phone like this... NFC could have waited for the next google phone IMO.
Doesn't 2.3.3 support WebM, which is a hidef codec?

It should be able to as Samsung has a whole bunch of codecs which wouldn't be hard to implement into qualcomm s3 processor. I will be picking mines up at the store on release date. Now all we need is a forum.

Whether I'm on 3G/4G or Wifi, the quality of videos is definitely BAD... borders look blurry, unacceptable. And I'm talking about HD videos. Videos that are supposed to be 1080p.
Yes, the HD option is turned on.
My friend owns an HTC One and Youtube videos looks just great, just the way they're supposed to be.
How is this possible? Do I have a defective device? In any other situation the display looks perfectly fine.
Did anybody else notice this?
Thanks in advance.
I just checked and it happens to me too ... i have the gt i9500 ...
have you guys tried updating the application an update came out a couple of days back ...
i hav i9500 and didnt face any problems like this till now....
UPDATE:
Ok, this is pretty strange.
I decided to uninstall the downloaded Youtube app and restore the stock one (I run the latest Samsung firmware).
SURPRISE! Problem is GONE! Videos are now crystal clear! Just as they should be.
I wander where the problem is with the latest Youtube app... During the playback I click the "HD" symbol (option on top right of the screen) and it seems turned ON (no red line under though.
Anyone else tried??
Quality on my i9100 is poor even in hd. I'm running carbon room 1.8 and things were fine before YouTube update...
I have the same problem on my Galaxy S2 LTE. It has nothing to do with my network, Wi-Fi, or video quality as I've read elsewhere.
Videos looked clear with the old YouTube, but when they updated the interface, videos look pixelated when in full screen. It's like they left out the smoothing for when videos get resized.
Yup I can confirm the video quality on the latest YouTube app it terrible.
I used an older version and it's great

Well, no. Video quality on the latest Youtube app (v5.021) is simply awesome :good:
Have you increased the video quality in setting's? I'm playing full 1080 videos. No issues here

I have the same problem with the new UI (latest version). Playing movies in HD quality looks a lot worse than in the previous version. Don't really wanna roll back because I love the new design. Hope someone finds a fix.

Anyone found a solution yet?
I hate the new version's video quality.
I 've been Googling for a solution but haven't found one yet. There are multiple topics about this though but none have a solution:

I wonder if it 's only a minority that is bothered by it or if people just don't see it. I 'm gonna do a rollback and I 'll try and post a before & after pic to show the difference.
Ok, I 've made a comparison of one of my movies with the two latest versions:
Version 4.5.17 (previous version of Youtube, with the old UI):
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",
"lightbox_stop_slideshow": "Stop slideshow",
"lightbox_full_screen": "Full screen",
"lightbox_thumbnails": "Thumbnails",
"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
Version 5.0.21 (latest version of Youtube, with the new UI):
You can clearly see a difference especially around the edges. It 's harder to spot in a still than in a movie but you can still see it. Look closely at the edges of my jacket, the snow, the funbox or the treeline
I 'm sticking with version 4.5.17 until Google fixes this. Even though I like the new UI, it doesn't really add anything besides the stupid floating window which I actually find annoying.
My device is a Desire HD running Mustaavalkosta 's CM10.1 SR1.1 ROM. Resolution of this device is 800x480 on a 4.3" screen.
People keep assuming it's to do with video quality, but it's not. Poor video quality creates a kind of fuzzy blurry. Bad resizing without smoothing (is it called interpolation or anti aliasing?) creates a sharp pixelated effect which is what's happening.

That is exactly what it looks like. You see this a lot in games but I had never seen this before in movies. It 's like they disabled AA for some reason.
Got the new Galaxy Note 3 and am glad to say the pixelated effect is not present on stock Jellybean. It is still present on my Skyrocket with CM11, but I guess it doesn't matter anymore.
