Questions about kernels - Fascinate General

Hey guys,
I'm pretty new to tweaking the fascinate, and had some questions regarding flashing different kernels.
1. What kernel should I flash? I'm running superclean 2.9.2 with nitsuj's gingerbread theme. If there's any more information you need to know, just ask!
2. How would I go about flashing the kernel to my phone?
Thanks!

EDIT: HOLY CRAP. I just downloaded the overclocked kernel that sfournie posted below. I thought that simply using superclean made my phone fast, overclocking makes the thing about as snappy as a chihuahua on a caffeine overdose (Recorded ~1600 benchmark stat). The soundfix is awesome, and the colorfix makes everything lose that stupid blue overtone - so that rocks too! I don't know if that kernel down there is posted in a sticky, but if it isn't, then it should be!

If you have superclean 2.9.2 then you have a variety of options. You can flash an overclocked kernel which will make your fascinate more sharp and crisp, (you need setcpu which you can get from market)
To flash your going to download this zip file, move it to your sd card, then boot into recovery mode, then you want to select install zip from sd card, choose the kernel you downloaded and hit install. Should work fine, just make sure you that you use kernels meant for Superclean 2.9.2
overclocked:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1011626
aggresively undervolted: (a little safer, more conservative yet very well performing)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1012571
For this one make sure you understand if you have voodoo or nonvoodoo
EDIT:
Here is a great compiled list, you want to find the kernels that are touchwiz kernels.

One thing to note: I've noticed that a lot of people recommend Wiping your Cache and your Dalvik Cache after installing a new Kernel.
You'll also want to wipe your bstats if you plan on sticking with a kernel for a while as it might give you more accurate battery %'s. You can do that by downloading a terminal emulator from the market, running it, type "su" and hit enter (a permissions window might pop up here, just click "Allow"), and then type "bstats" and hit the enter key again. This will immediately reboot your phone. After 1 or 2 complete cycles you should notice better battery life and %'s. Note: You should generally only do this when your phone is fully charged.

Question...I follow your directions. I've installed multiple roms on my old moto droid via manual style and rom manager. However, just switched to the fascinate and installed superclean 2.9.2 as well. When I reboot into recovery though, it doesn't give me the option to install from SD. Do I need to flash to a different recovery? Currently it's latest edition of clockwork mod.

You may have installed many roms, but only one rom is active at a time, otherwise the old roms are just files and don't mean anything (I think).
What recovery mode are you running, what does it say cwm number is? It should definitely have the install zip from sd option, use the volume up down and power key and edit key to navigate.

I figured it out. I had to select the apply update.zip to activate the next menu that actually let me chose to browse the SD

I used to run about 900 with just superclean nonvoodoo which was fine with voodoo (stock kernel) it was about 1000 and then with the undervolted kernel it was around 1500, the overclock i have hit 1800. but i chose the undervolted because it is battery efficient and just a little more practicle while not losing much performance.

Its awesome. Now, I have heard that our processor is capable of being boosted to 1.6ghz. Is this true, and if so would it be stable?

Our processor doesn't overclock properly, and the further from 1.0GHz you get, the more "off" it is. People have pushed it to 1.6GHz, but it was found out it wasn't actually running that fast, and anything over 1.1/1.2GHz has had stability issues.

Would there be a reason why my phone will only work with jt's 327_2 kernal none of the others will work even if I do a data wipe they still force close like crazy and if I plug in the phone it just starts restarts its self over and over.

The only thing I can figure out is the rom your using isn't compatible with the kernel look at the link I posted above. Specific kernels are for specific roms other than that they should all work fine. I installed every kernel for superclean rom and they all worked.
What rom are you using?

Geeknik 1.5 installed on my phone, but I've not seen Geeknik advertise it?

I just installed the newest Blackhole & I got the option to install Geeknik's StupidFast Kernel 1.5 or StupidFast Kernel Test 1.5.4. I am confused because haven't seen anyone else mention this kernel version yet...I installed 1.5, has anyone else? Is this just an error in ROM Manager or is this version out and just no one is talking about it?
I saw that too when I was installing the latest Blackhole rom. I was afraid to try it since I've heard nothing about it in this forum. I also didn't see the original 1.0.36 stable version, so I'm thinking it was titled wrong or something along those lines. Hope we find out soon.
glad you posted it in the right place
The StupidFast kernels v1.4, 1.5, and 1.54 are meant only for DJ05, that's why they aren't posted here. I guess some users have had success with them on DI01, but others have had problems. If you're still on DI01, I'd go with either 1.2.3, 1.1.23, or 1.0.36.

I didn't have the option for either of those, only v1.5 and v1.5.4 (Test). So I chose 1.5.

The kernel version numbers are correct and were downloaded from directly from geeknik's website. I'll post the link as soon as I can find it. You have the option to choose not to install a kernel if you are happy with your current kernel, or try one of them, and then flash back to one from the forums if you like. According to his website they are compatible with both firmwares. If people are having issues I will add back the previous versions tomorrow.

There is the changelog for v1.5 and 1.54 I realize that it says that they are compatible, and some people haven't had issues, but others have. If you're still on DI01 and you get issues with one of the 1.5 kernels, I'd roll back to 1.2.3.

Yea, look under Stock Apps in the Rom Manager-Sonofskywalker3 section. It's there.

How do i know which kernel im using?

I'm using Super Clean 0.4 ROM and i know i flashed Adrynalyn's 12/30 kernel. What i don't know is which one i'm running, voodoo or non voodoo. How do i figure this out?

One more question, If I want to use Adrynalyne's 12/30 Voodoo kernel, will I have to unflash the other one or can I just overwrite it?

You can't really "unflash" a kernel. Just flash the new one over the top of the previous one to switch.

Thank you Chopper.
Un flash? That is a one way street, but you can flash over a kernel with another (or previous) kernel, typically by installing a .zip with CWR.
You can flash any kernel over any kernel. If your current kernel has a lagfix enabled, you have to take the necessary precautions (only flash compatible kernels) or disable it first.
Swyped w/ XDA App. When in doubt, mumble.
Thank you, just what I was looking for.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but if you're really opposed to CWM, couldn't you just unzip the package, flash the kernel with fastboot and push the file in system/lib using adb?
Anyway, Smartass governor? Wow, having had a Droid X before I feel like I've really been out of the loop. Read up on it, I like it. It's good to have a kernel that I feel I can relate to.
Still charges in cwm when off just displays cwm recovery screen if fastboot is not enabled.

Choosing the right kernel

Hi all,
My Galaxy S i9000 will arrive tomorrow and I'd like to be prepared how to and which kernel to flash.
I'll probably just flash JVQ, the latest official Gingerbread 2.3.4 ROM. But I can't decide which kernel to use. My main priority is the performance and safety (by this I mean recovery options).
I have found two kernels which might fit my needs.
First of all SpeedMod Gingerbread. It has EXT4 lagfix and sound improvements etc. It seems good to me.
There are no instructions for this one, but my guess is to just flash the .tar with ODIN as PDA?
Second I have found CF-Root. There are clear instructions so I don't need help how to, but is this a good option as a kernel?
What kernel do you think is the best for the Gingerbread ROM JVQ?
Also, what about CWM? How do I boot into this recovery? Does it replace the default recovery?
Sorry for the noob questions, but as you see I'm quiet uncertain about these things, though I've read alot.
Thanks
Stock JVQ ?
Why won't you flash a custom ROM ? For example you could install Insanity's, Darky's, etc... which are sort of "packages" containing everything you are looking for.
Each one of them have a specific forum in Dev, with flashing explanations.
As for kernels, if I ever needed to change, I'd go for Glitch.
I would wait and use cf root when its released and if your not happy with the speed then use an oc kernal.there are many packages that will be available for all the mods you want in the themes section.this way you will be as close to stock as possible avoiding any unwanted issues
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
I've considered Darky's 10.1, but I dunno, I don't like the green colors and everything.
Insanity and glitch look cool. I must have overlooked this ROM, I might consider it. Thanks for the tip
Stock with CF-Root seems to be the fastest in Quadrant. I'm in doubt.
bro i think u have to keep Cf-root i install jvq and put Speedmod in it but u cant image it doesnot contain Superuser and cmw after that i install Cf-root it really better then speedmod this time not always.........i hope u can go with cf root
Have you considered other kernels like Semaphore, Galaxian or Talon?
All of these have OC/UV capabilities, EXT 4 and more performance tweaks than CF-Root itself.
Speedmod is currently undergoing major developments (less stable versions being tested). You can wait until it has a stable version before flashing.
And you can buy Voodoo control plus if you want great sound.
I know Talon has Voodoo sound v9 built in. So, take your pick
For stock JVQ I recommend to use stock kernel until the custom kernels have updated JVQ initframs.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
I'll look intro Talon. I won't overclock my device as I want it too last as long as possible The Voodoo stuff seems interesting. Would it work if I just flashed it over CF-Root? Guess not. I would have to flash the stock kernel and then Talon again?
With the latest stock JVQ I'm getting 1400 score in Quadrant, kinda low. I'm now attempting to convert to ext4, but the system folder has too less space, trying to move some apps.
Edit:
With everything converted to ext4 I now have 2300, that's better I'll leave it like this I think. I'm fine. Thanks for the tips
In that case i would recommend to use Talon 0.3.1 without OC.

[Verizon Fascinate Guide] Flashing a Kernel for EH03

I basically put in the title EH03 due to the vast majority of people using EH03 Roms now.
I am not responsible for anything you do to your phone. standard disclamer but i feel its important to add to this just incase people want to come at me saying something i said to do messed up their phone or whatever.
Basically, I'm writing this for my own use and for anyone who needs information regarding kernel flashing or what kernels are for what rom. There are two types of Roms, Touchwiz (TW) and MTD. For TW there is 3 kernels available. And 2 for MTD. The links will be at the bottom of the post, I will go into as much detail as i can without kanging the OP of the kernels. They all have great write-ups on OC/UV and all that fancy stuff. Basically I use Voltage Control (get from the market) and set it to 200-1200, set as boot and not one hot boot or any other issues, but all fassy's are different, what works for me may not work for you, so do not think that im telling you what is standard for every phone, cause theyre isnt a real answer to that.
Note: All the kernels that I will be referring to allow the installation of Custom Boot Animations via CWM. There is a great list of a bunch of them I will post link to it as well.
TW:
1) KGB (updated 1/16/12) (formally known as TKS and TKSGB) this imo, is the one i use with my current rom/kernel combo. This one comes with an app packaged in the kernel install. for more information on the app features, see the op at the bottom of the post.
2) GeeWiz. (updated 2/3/12) This one comes with a Rom/Kernel/Recovery Package. As of the new update, he separated the kernel from the rom so you can use just the kernel. This one is more of a stock kernel with some extra features. See link for the complete list of features.
3) LeanKernel (updated 1/1/12) (Rootzwiki) This was actually one of the first kernels I used. It is already OC'd to 1200 so no need to use the Voltage Control App with this kernel. Not too much more to say about this one because I didnt use it too long. Make sure you check your rom to ensure you are choosing the correct verison of the kernel. There is EH and EI. EH03 is the Verizon Fascinate GB. EI120 I believe is the Mesmorize GB (correct me if I'm wrong?) but some people have ported E120 Roms to the Fascinate, thus the need for that kernel version.
4) Stock Kernel Stock is stock, you cant do any customizing to it, no OC/UV or boot animations. It depends on what version of cwm you are using to determine which version of the kernel you need to flash in CWM : 2.+ cwm = amend 3.+ cwm = edify
**however the red recovery which is 2.5.1 takes edify.
MTD:
MTD is basically for CM7/CM9(when it gets ported to us) Team Hacksung's ICS port and MIUI. Im not going to go into detail for any of this because i never used them long enough to grasp anything about them.
1) Glitch v13.1 (updated 12/25/11) This is imo the most common MTD kernel used by the community. Features and OC/UV values can be found in the OP. They also have a test version out for ICS if you are using that Rom. Make sure when you go to this OP you choose the Fascinate version of the kernel.
2) JT's 3 button fix Kernel (JT's Twitter) This is another MTD kernel. Not much to say about this one. Just that it only works for MTD based Roms.
I put a link to Droidstyle's Guide for Rom Flashing if you guys haven't already flashed a custom rom.
I hope this gave you guys some insight.

It depends on what version of cwm you are using
2.+ cwm = amend
3.+ cwm =edify

If you do not have a custom rom you will not be able to install a custom kernel, Refer to droidstyle's guide if you have not already installed a rom. Link is in OP..

Whoa, what? This is the first I've heard this. I've read through Droidstyle's guide, and didn't see this specifically mentioned. Or in any of the other threads I'd read, actually (there's so many).
Through all the posts I see on kernels, how kernels like KGB work with Gingerbread and EH03 based ROMs, which lead me to believe just the kernel can be customized with a stock ROM... I've never seen one until now that said you must have a custom ROM first.
So they mean, a Gingerbread/EH03 based *custom* ROM when they say that.
This would explain why I borked my phone trying to put KGB on it.
I wish I had seen this thread earlier, that would've save me a lot of headache.
It all makes sense now.
