[Q] Some questions about the Xperias - Xperia Arc General

I'm looking at buying the Xperia Neo or Pro (sorry guys, couldn't find a sub-thread for those). I've done enough reading about the Arc (which is such a gorgeous device), but I'm leaning towards the Neo for the front-facing camera, which is a biggie for me, and/or the Pro for the hardware keyboard. So here are my questions.
How much RAM (not internal memory) do these devices (Arc/Neo/Pro) have?
Any word on the unlockability of the bootloader this time? The first thing that I would do (or most of the people here) with an Android device is slap a custom ROM on it.
How much lag does Timescape actually cause? I'm reading conflicting opinions!

Not managed to unlock the bootloader on the X10 yet.. and we've not seen timescape on the new ones.. so don't really know.. you can get the memory info of the SE site..

1. 512
2. Dunno, guess we'll have to wait and see. Gehot is on the job though
3. Its just an app, you dont have to use it. The widget seems to cause some lag when swiping homescreens, but like I said, you dont have to use it (I wont)

Why would you want a frontfacing camera, the only useful thing about it are obviously video calls, and those won't be mainstream or even practically useable for at least next 5 years ? :O
But anyway, all of them have identical RAM size - 512 mb. The bootloader will be locked for all the devices, and more companies will start locking their devices in near future as well.
And errr, timescape.. depends really, Xperia Arc is lagfree from what I've seen, no idea about other members of the new Xperia line.

The girlfriend lives far away and both of us are planning to get 3G phones with front-facing cams! (3G has just been introduced here in India, and I guess the prices for video-calls will drop because of all the competition)

It is just more convenient to video chat on the go!

I'm just waiting 'till mobile network providers realise how much cheaper VoIP on Android phones is, than making actual phonecalls ( provided you have some data plan ) - I think I've saved loads of cash for just making calls via skype on my phone instead of making an actual phonecall.

I'm never getting a WinsMo or Xperia ever..

Sony is not doing ANYTHING bout the xperia.. have they given up with it? im getting soooooo bored with the phone, theres no new panels etc. i'm never getting a windows mobile phone

seems to be much much much much better than WinsMo will ever get!
There's alot more to WM than meets the eye you know. The Xperia is hyped with the Panels in mind but it's certainly not the only feature there's alot more that can be done.
I, myself have removed the panels completely, I don't like them and never used them. I currently use the Panels button to open my comm manager so I can change what's on and what's not.
Have you installed any other software for you phone at all? Just a few interfaces to mention for instance:
TouchFlo
SPB Pocket Plus
SPB Mobile Shell
Im sure there's more. The bottom two offer a heck of alot of customization for the "look" of your phone. Skins/Icons. You could have it looking like an iPhone if you wanted, or there abouts.
On top of that there's more programs that you can install than you can shake a stick at. It's much like a PC, the amount of things you can do with it is amazing.
I'll agree there are problems with the device, but the problem with the majority is they always look on the negatives and not the positives. Sometimes the phone is a bit hard to use and after showing a few friends of mine the phone, they have really liked it but I have had to put them off the phone because they without being rude don't have the knowledge to use the phone and be happy with it to it's fullest.
Windows Mobile really is what you make it, some like it, some hate it. It's not the greatest of operating systems for phones and it's probably one of the most hardest to use and learn, but the options you have are well worth the effort.

what's so wrong of posting it here? i think he has the rights to express his feelings.
mate, i hated windows mobile before! yes i did, even though i'm a microsoft "fan" but when i used my X1, i started customizing it in a way that really fits my needs, and now i'm using my phone as a computer which is always in my pocket!
you can find alot of cool stuff in the forum, customize your phone and play arround with it, change all default values (be careful not to change something that will make you hard reset, and always backup). Customize the phone, windows is the most flexible and customizable OS ever (sorry Linux fans).
let me know if you need any help
The thing that concerns ME is that SE and HTC have parted ways, and no longer co-operate.
That means the support level for our HTC-made Xperia X1's is going down the tubes. HTC is the one most likely responsible for firmware upgrades to their hardware, so now that SE and HTC no longer co-operate/partner I highly doubt HTC will be making any firmware updates for our phone.
Consider this... the HTC Touch HD has been released after the X1, yet has already receive one or two firmware updates by HTC to fix various issues. The X1 has received ZERO updates.
SE has basically decided to give up on the Xperia X1 from what we can see, since they moved to a new manufacturer.
Of course, this doesn't mean the great developers at XDA will not be coming out with home brew firmwares and fixes, but it does mean that official support from SE is probably going to be winding down and dying...
why else would a simple fix to the bluetooth problem (which MANY people here have found) is not being pushed out? Because SE doesn't want to pay HTC to release the firmware fix since they no longer co-operate.
Oh well. I hope to be proven wrong, but the fact HTC is pushing out firmware updates for all their devices but NOT the Xperia X1 (despite being released longer) confirms this.

R U using it so you knew it is much more better ?
go buy a nokia s40 phone and then use your x1 again. let me know what you like more and would rather use.
I allways look at this that my new X1 is as a toy for Big boy.
Its all abaut somthing changing experimenting tweaking.
I like this .
or just buy nokia 6110 make call, recive call and sleep well in the nights.
I was always under the impression that this was a dsicussion forum for the understanding and development of a set of phones.
Unfortunately lately it's become an area for people with no understanding to moan.

Eeek! That's news to me. I was planning on buying an X1 soon (read: early next month?), but now I'm going to have to reconsider after I send Sony a line of questions. If HTC isn't making the phone anymore, who is? Or is it simply going to go out of stock after the reserves sell?

What a load of crap.
All we know is that HTC won't be building the X2 (or whatever they end up calling it) together. We don't even know what OS is going to run on it.
However it's SE responsibilty for the software, they are working on a new firmware, whether those on branded phone will see it depends on their networks (unless you do a DIY job).
And if SE do need help from HTC with some hardware issues, HTC will need to provided it, they will be under contract and most likely will want to build future models (X3).
HTC is not going to produce "next" Sony Ericsson phone.
HTC still produces XPERIA for Sony Ericcson.

no-one said that,
SE aren't using HTC to develop future phone, it looks like they're using asus instead.. although it could also be that the x2 is android based :0

Lies.....
I have seen what the new Palm Pre can do...it's a good interface but basically that's all it has good interface.
And yes I am impressed but I told myself, I will never buy a Palm because it looks like it has shifted from pda function to a P.O.S. kid's toy ... a competitor to the iphone.
I am looking for a backup device when I don't have the computer, not some stupid kid's toy.
Also...I really really want the Omnia HD...it's multimedia and out of the box experience is great, but AGAIN, symbian add-on software isn't as good. So if I were to buy a Samsung Omnia HD, I would buy it as a PMP, and I would buy a Toshiba TG01 as a Pocket PC.
But for now, Xperia has some qualities of Omnia HD and some qualities of other good and fast windows mobile phones like Toshiba TG01. Obviously Omnia HD doesn't have windows mobile, which I prefer over symbian (I've used symbian S60 first before switch to Windows Mobile), and it's also obvious that Toshiba TG01 doesn't have headphone jack and keyboard like the Xperia. So Xperia is the sort of the best of both worlds for now.
If I had cash I'd buy Toshiba TG01 and Omnia HD seperate...but if only XDA developed for the Toshiva TG01....
If there was a super godlike overkill hybrid phone that was both the Toshiba TG01 and Omnia HD...I would buy that hybrid instead...

I think we should sticky that comment to the front page. IN BIG LETTERS.

Confused ... Why shall I buy X10? is it better than iPhone4/SATIO/N8?

Dears,
I had HD2 and it was stolen, accordingly i started search journey to buy a new phone, I was amazed by Android OS and the best Spec sheet is found under X10 but there is a lot of limitations on the current version and the most important that the market is not enabled in my region (Egypt).
Comparing it to other phones mentioned above (SATIO, iPhone4 and N8) I will be confused.
I want to have stable OS, good camera, Powerfull Web Browser, Exchange program, lot of program to try and no problem to buy
And all the above including the X10 have it all.
YOUR ADVICE PLEASEEEE
----------------
Thanks for the support, I bought the X10 on Thu 24th of June 2010....
Feedback after using the X10
Here is my story with X10 after 1 day of usage.
Since this is the first time to me to use the Android system, so I noticed that it is (from the interface side) a mix between iPhone and WM but it is much better faster and stable.
Network Reception ... Perfect
GPS reception ... Perfect
OS ... Perfect
Phone Dialer ... Similar to the iPhone one
Messaging ... Similar to the WM one
Browser ... Perfect in English sites not the Arabic one
Arabic support ... Very Poor (supposed to be supported in next Update 2.1)
Navigation program ... perfect as a 30 days trials and the 12 month upgrade will cost me 70Euro (costly some how but i will buy it as there is no alternative).
Android Market ... Medium in terms of paid programs (as Document2Go) and Perfect for the free programs (when Google will be able to give us access to the paid market).
Camera ... File size and quality is more than perfect but I've noticed that the image contrast is very High and I couldn't adjust it and there is a problem in the flash must be activated from the advanced menu every time i want to use it (stupid).
Exchange program ... Very powerful since it is for free (Roadsync which is a paid program is VERY powerful than the stock one). The problem is that i cannot set a frequent Sync other than push (which consume the battery to the maximum).
Battery life ... After 12 hours extensive usage there are 37% remaining power in the battery (which is good since i used a lot today , GPS, Camera, WEB, Exchange, messaging and Market).
Build quality ... So Far So Good
This is my initial feedback and will be followed by another feedback soon...
-------------------
To be continued .....

Thanks, I own a MacBook Pro, so I used on Apple crab
but at the same time I don't change my mobile a lot (I still have my Nokia E90 and it is in Excellent shape). so what I'm doing is studying the market very well and take expert opinion and then decide to buy a mobile that will last at least 2 years with me.
thanks for the advice
satio is not so great. resistive screen, old symbian and an apparently laggy interface. if you want a s.e. symbian i'd go with a vivaz pro, if you want any symbian device, i'd go and n8 otherwise x10 is the way to go.
if you post a poll here, surely X10 will win, but anyway
Satio - if I'm not mistaken Satio has a 12MP camera, but the OS is Symbian, from past experience the Symbian OS were great until the N series came along, since then I find the OS quite laggy and somewhat outdated so I decided to stop using Nokia phones along with any Symbian OS related phones
N8 - not much to say since it's not out yet, as you read above I'm not as impressed with Symbian OS as I used to anymore, I'd suggest you should wait until the phone is released and look for reviews
iPhone 4 - to me it's another iPhone 3Gs, with video calling as long as you're connected to a wifi and bits of improvement on the hardware, next thing you know a year after Apple will release iPhone 4G/4s/something with bits of improvement over iPhone 4 (maybe like video calling without the need of a wifi, since last I check, iPhone 4 is only 3G)
X10 - the reason I prefer X10 over everything is because of Android OS, it's constantly growing and with version 2.2 (froyo), it shows that it can be better than iPhone's OS, we'll probably not be getting 2.2 from SE, but recent news that we have root (that enables us to use 2.2 as long as someone is willing on making a custom 2.2 ROM for X10). Hardware wise X10 may not be better than some Android phone, but it's one of the few with decent hardware and design
U can debrand ur Phone, then u will have the market! I know some guys in the U.A.E. have done this!
I was a bit hesitant on moving from Windows Mobile to Android as well previously, but now that I got the X10 and used Android have absolutely no regrets and never looked back since. It really puts Window Mobile to shame I think. Don't like the iphone simply because of all the hype and its closed nature, I like to own my phone not be told what I can and can't use on it. Also, still think that X10 is the best looking phone out there. Camera is great, especially if you know what settings to use and the stock browser is great to use, even though there are plenty other browsers out there. The only thing that annoyed me was SE's keyboard implementation which everyone hates. Using the Android keyboard or HTC's solved that problem. Was never a fan of symbian so X10 wins I reckon. Just be sure to buy it knowing that it takes a while for SE to give updates.

+1 Exactly how I feel. I returned my X2 and got the X10 instead.
I would never give a cent nof my money to Apple. They "re-invent" ideas already out there and put an iSpin on it. Then they have the audacity to try to sue any competition claiming they copied Apple, they even tried to sued a non profit organization from NEW YORK for using an apple on their logo.
BTW, you don't need market to install apps on your phone. Look up "Astro".
if the options are galaxy nexus something im not sure which i ll chose
but with these option x10 is the only answer for me
I have seen some sample HD video's taken by the iPhone 4 camera, and the quality is much better than any phone I've seen, including the X10. Picture wise, the the iPhone and X10 are probably about equal, but the N8 should be better than both. I haven't really seen any video samples taken by the N8, but I suspect it's pretty damn good at that as well, so if camera is very important I'd go for the iPhone or N8.
In a few months time the X10 will get HD video recording as well, so who knows how it will hold its own by that time.
Operating system wise, the X10 probably wins by a fair amount. Plus the hardware looks great.
haha should those fruit seller get a license from apple before they can sell an apple?
x10 is the best choice for now i have both hd2 and x10 ,x10 is much more fun ,and with respect to the limitations x10 is rooted and all issues will be fixed isa

am pretty much crashed about android ..
i really wish that i've android 2.2 or at least 2.1 on my phone !

Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
what should i donate for ??
All of the time and sanity someone would have to use to make this possible. It would be pretty awesome though.

Possible in theory, not in reality.
If you really want an android device, perhaps you can only buy one.
Someone would have to hack the boot loader on the N8, Get it stable enough so that it could flash custom roms, Then re-write all the drivers so that they work on Android & then flash Android OS onto the device.
Not saying its not possable but that's a LOT of work for one person to undertake.
Maybe better off selling your N8 & using the funds to buy an Android phone?

At this point I dont think you wouldn't be able to get a team OR maybe you could try recruiting one on your own (if you are not planning to do the work mentioned above on your own that is).
If not you could concetrate on the first step i.e. hacking the bootloader and then post here? Guess you would have more chances of getting others interest then.
Yeah really would be nice, but unless you find someone willing, and donate alot... not gonna happen in the near future.
Pretty sure you could find an Android phone with most or all of those features. Pay $20 for a metal case

can anyone of you make it real ?? please
It's not going to happen.
Also the Galaxy S already had Android running so the drivers were there, they just needed to be slightly modified for 2.3.
As for the N8, it's never had Android so it pretty much means working with stock Android and reverse engineering everything to work which summarised like that is over-simplified...
It's just not worth the work.

No one is going to take on a project like this. It would be a boat load of work and there's no demand for it.
As for the specs: HMDI, there are Android phones w/ HDMI (EVO for example).
12MP camera and Xenon flash? Are you serious? If you really NEED that kind of firepower maybe you should get a real camera b/c there's no way any amateur needs those specs and no real photographer is going to rely on his CELL PHONE to take pix.
AV out - for audio you can use the headphone jack. For video, seriously, you don't have something better to watch videos on that you need to output from your phone to a TV?
Dolby Surround? Are you effin' kidding me? This doesn't even warrant a response.
These are ridiculous, over-spec'd TOYS! And I'm sure if you poll the majority of the people on this forum you'd see that it's something that's "cool to have" but they would be underutilized. It's fluff to get people to buy their Symbian crap and apparently it worked... And now you're wishing for an Android "system, not phone."
Maybe I'm coming off as rude here but seriously, your Nokia sounded like an impulse buy - you saw the specs and you bought your brick.
Sell it, get an Android phone.
In addition, many people here, including myself, are running custom ROMs and some can't even utilize all of their phones features (HDMI, 4G, etc.) and are perfectly happy with it...
I know how you feel about wanting specific hardware with specific software/firmware (I've been in those situations) but these are massive projects that no one is going to attempt. And if someone does, they're a better man than I...
I'm assuming you're not in the US b/c no one here would force a relic like Nokia/Symbian upon you.. A phone and OS past their prime and I don't get the hype it gets overseas..

First of all, don't say "**** my life" - there's a lot more to life than cell phones and I only know that all too well...
Second, don't get angry at me. I'm nobody to you. Just ignore me and my comments, this is only an internet forum. Take advice with a grain of salt because most likely no one here can help you unfortunately, so they'll just offer up opinions.
Wasn't trying to make you feel guilty, my apologies. But what you're asking for is extremely unlikely and difficult. AND from your OP it does sound like it was an impulse buy BECAUSE the Nokia had a lot of "features" AND you just called Symbian a "fool's Symbian" so you knew what you were getting into.
I'm sorry but there's a lot of people who buy with their hearts, not with their heads and it bites them in the ass.
Had you done proper research (and maybe you did, I don't know) but I think you would have ended up w/ an Android.
Almost 2 years ago I was moments away from buying an iPhone but I decided to give Android a chance because I did A LOT of reading and research about it and I was convinced that in the long run it would prove more valuable to me than an iPhone. Now almost 2 years later, I'm so glad I did all that reading and research b/c I would never buy an iPhone now! Just a comparison...
And as for the hardware of that Nokia, I'm still not convinced all that stuff is necessary. I have HDMI - never used it. I have 4G - never used it even though it's available here in New York City. I have an 8MP camera - most I ever use (and rarely) is 5MP b/c 8MP is needlessly huge.
Sell your phone on eBay - I've always had success selling used phones there for good money. And you said it's only 1 month old and a popular, feature-rich model.
Good luck...
I´m not going to enter in the childlish discussion of wether you should get or not an android phone for that. The n8 has its pros and cons against android. It has a great hardware but it has symbian... god knows that if it had android that would be my actual phone... but nokia´s pride made me join the other side
Coming back to what you ask. I don´t see it possible in the near future, but if the n8 had come with maemo or meego instead of symbian probably there would be people working on it.
I would suggest you to go to the NITdroid forum to ask, just google nitdroid. They ported android for the n800 and n900(both nokia maemo devices). I have not checked that forum in a while, maybe they are working on it already, maybe they are not even thinking about it. But if you want to talk to a team that might consither doing it i think that is your best shot.
...oy.... listen mate.... no disrespect but you are the one not getting it.... everyone here is being perfectly reasonable and is actually trying to give you the best advice they can.... I'll try and break things down though....
I can definitely relate when you say that you love a piece of hardware but wish the OS was different...I was in the exact same boat with my Nokia E71... LOVED the phone itself...but Symbian was just horrid.... Here is why people are giving you "mean replies"....
What you are asking for is *technically* possible.... but it is a LOT of work.... As described above you'd have to make a stable bootloader, flash the rom and then re-write all of the drivers.... this takes time, effort and money (it's not unlikely that you'd probably brick a few N8s in the process).... The problem is that right now you are more or less the only one interested in this project.... Other projects like running Android on the iPhone are coming along because there is a huge market of iphone users who would like to play with android on their phone as well as a market of android users who like apple hardware... some of these people are devs who want this to happen bad enough that they are willing to contribute their time. Other people who are not as technically inclined but have a bit of extra cash are contributing by donating to official projects who have showed progress. The key difference between the Android on iPhone and the Android on N8 project is that there is a demand for the iPhone project. If there was a 10 page thread full of people saying "hey listen I'm interested in this".... something might happen.... but even with the iPhone development, its a *slow* process. In a nutshell the people who do have the skill to pull this off are limited, and you are asking them to devote hours and hours of their time into a project they aren't interested in for no monetary or any other type of compensation other than maybe a Thank You.
The reason people were able to port Gingerbread onto the Samsung so quickly is because for starters, the Samsung was already designed to run an Android OS so a lot of the groundwork was already done. The hardware was made to be compatible with (and more or less) function with the stock OS. Devs have already had experience working with both the OS and the device. It's kinda like trying to fit an engine into a car. Is it possible to squeeze a new BMW M3 engine into a Volvo? Sure..... But it's much much easier to squeeze it into lets say an older BMW 3 Series.... especially if the mechanics you are talking to specialize in BMWs...
As for people giving you flack for the features... Most of them do have a point... The HDMI out is a valid feature someone might want for various reasons, but other android phones have this feature as well...same for the FM tuner.... As for the camera, 12MP is great on paper... but here is the thing. 1) Unless you are blowing these images up to poster size, a 5 or 8 mp camera will do just as well.... I have a Nexus One and I love the pics it takes.... megapixels start becoming somewhat irrelevant after a certain point because the increase in pixels doesn't necessarily improve the quality that much. It becomes more of a spec for manufactures to advertise. Things such as lense size and the size of the sensor have a much greater input on the quality of your image (the bigger the lense the more light it lets in, the bigger the size of the CMOS ship the more sensetive the camera is). These are 2 things phones struggle with because of physical limitations... there is only so much you can squeeze into a phone. Would you see a difference between a 12mp DSLR and an 8mp DSLR? of course.... an 8mp phone or a 12mp phone? not so much....
Solid construction is always a winner.... nothing wrong with loving a phone for that... its one of the reasons why I loved my E71....
As for the "dolby" sound.... you run into a similar problem as the camera... its more of a "on paper" thing.... the reality is that the mics that go into these phones are alright for talking, but are nowhere *near* the quality you would get (or need) for a legitimate camera. The mics aren't tuned, and due to the tiny diaphrams you pretty much get no frequency response on the low end. Also if by Dolby you mean the phone records in surround sound... that is a whole other nightmare... you start getting into a phasing issues and what not... if it just means that it's certified by Dolby... it mostly just means that Nokia paid Dolby some change, got them to maybe tweak things a bit but for the most part just bought the rights to slap their logo on the phone... you *might* here marginally better recordings... key words are might and marginally...
As for the flash.... people usually curse and blink repeatedly if my N1s flash decides to go off... most phones today have more than adequet flashes for the cameras they are equipped with.
So to sort of wind this essay up... we're not trying to be assholes.... you asked a question...
can porting Android onto the N8 be done? yes....
is it worth the effort? unless demand skyrockets or you are willing to hire a dev and pay him for his work.... no
Than what are your options? Either do the best you can with Symbian until your contract runs out and/or you can afford a new phone.... or look at your budget, sell the N8 and pick up a droid.
People simply gave you their opinions as to what the best option is (which the overwhelming majority thinks is selling and getting a new phone), and why they believe this would be a good purchase. (ie: why a lot of the "features" on the N8 aren't really "features"). Hope this helped. Good luck. Peace,
L
Just my two cents, from a guy who came to Android from Symbian.
Maybe you should have asked for help before you bought the phone. It would have been a lot easier to help you at that point. It's not that people here do not want to help you, but there is not a lot that we can help you with. Answer this, what exactly are you wishing to gain from getting Android on your phone. If its a better UI try SPB Mobile Shell, it definitely made my Symbian 1 (5800 Xpressmusic) phone more bearable. If it's usability, there are many apps to help you out, and the numbers are slowly growing. I really can't see what would make this project worth the effort. Symbian 3 is not a very bad OS, although it's not one of the best.
Also, if you are going to ask for help you have to be open to suggestions and you would definitely have to give more details as to what you want to gain; there is always more than one way to handle problem. We all are trying to help but you have to help us help you, and stop getting upset because we give reasons why it's not possible and/or worth it.
This thread is hilarious.

Buying a MS2?

Hey Guys... don't know if my topic on off-topic makes much sense... so I'll link it right here as I'd like to get answers from MS2-users:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=926288.
Would you advice me to buy a MS2?
I'd like to get a fast device, updateable to Android 2.3 when available (don't care about a few month...), hardware keyboard, 1Ghz, lots of memory, 3,5mm headphone-out
I'm (as I wrote on my topic) also interested in LG P990...but it has no hardware keyboard...and I don't know when it'll be available.
MS2 perhaps could be available tomorrow for me...
I'm not glad to read that MotoBlur sucks the battrie...guess it's not neccessary for me...
I just got the MS2, if I were in your position I'd be waiting another month or two and either getting the LG P990 or one of the other models currently prepping for release
MS2 is a nice solid phone, but I honestly doubt it will see 2.3, has a locked bootloader, is pumped full of useless MotorBlur apps and has no interest from ROM makers other than Angdroid.
After a lot of screwing around my phone is relatively motoblur free, but with the locked bootloader and Motorolas poor support in mind, I wish I had bought something else or waited
If only I had a time machine!
I have had my MS2 for over a month and it is a solid performer.
No need to worry about MotoBlur as it can be removed. I use Launcher Pro and froze blur with Titanium Backup, no problems.
It is fast and has loads of memory for apps.
As for 2.3 upgrade I have no idea when or if it will get it.
I've had my MS2 for a week now, and yes Motoblur is annoying, though I'm living with it for now. Also a few other niggles like the '£' on the keyboard actually produces '$'. But apart from that it is fast and feels really sturdy.
If you're not in a rush, I'd hang on for while to see what other phones come out with hardware keyboards or if any ROMS surface as there's definitely room for improvement, but it's probably the best thing out now with a keyboard.

Sorry, out of topic, but how did you froze up blur with titanium? Show me the way =P
About MS2, just buy it if you really want the physical keyboard. It's a pretty heavy phone (not a problem to me, but others might not think that way) and blur is really a battery hog and poor designed homescreen, it lags for no apparent reason, but the good news is that any homescreen replacement fixes it. Pretty solid phone, but not to everybody.
since my Xperia X1's weight is 159g and Milestone2 is 169...weight doesn't matter for me
good to know that any today-screen-replacement will deactivate that MotoBlur.
I guess I'll buy one
If I'm waiting for another good phone...i could wait for years... That earlier I buy a new phone that earlier I'm able to buy a new one xD
At least it has to rest for two years...and in two years I'll get a new phone with physical keyboard, hdmi-out and quadcore with a better batterie
>>>So if I can't find out that it has legs like Xperia X1 (sometimes it doesn't do anything for about 4-10 seconds...) or lags playing music (xperia X1 has small legs of some milliseconds while using TCPMP...) I'll order it today
Since today it's out for sale on O2 Germany...but no dealer has it on storage

FYI - If you press and hold the £ sign, you get a popup with a bunch of currency symbols on it, one of which is actually a £ sign.
Hope this helps.

Set up your locale correctly and the problem with pound sign and dollar sign will be corrected.
You can use Launcher Pro and a dozen other launchers so Blur IS NOT obligatory AT ALL.
Guys...changing launcher does not deactivate BLUR. BLUR is a set of widgets and system services and it's not that easy to disable it. One of milestone 2 subforums has a nice topic about disabling BLUR for real; I cant remember exactly where it is but there are not so many posts around here so far, so it should be easy to find
edit: found it: it's in general section and you can't miss it.
Du you mean deactivating or completly removing MotoBlur?
Removing should effect in lost warranty....and deactivating should be reversable?!
If I'll get a MS2....I'd like to use a docking station later on....and as far as I know, MotoBlur is needed for that docking station display mode?
hmmmmm...after MotoBlur is a battery-killer and with the encrypted bootloader...I'm not sure if I should wait for another device which fits to Android 2.3 specification and has a physical keyboard...
After the Xperia X1 I wouldn't like to get another device which needs hands on it to run fluently!

I came from Xperia X1 and was happy with Milestone 1 and now am happy with Milestone 2.
Home replacement does not really deactivate MotoBlur but even if it runs in the background you will see no performance degradation because of that.

It tells you what services/ apps you can freeze/ delete. I delted some of them and froze others.

Can you be more specific. My locale is set to "English (United Kingdom)" and it enters a $ instead of £, and tabs instead of € which is what the Droid 2 does.
Cheers,
Steve.
yesterday I've been testing a HTC HD2 Windows Mobile on-screen keyboard...since the sice is that tall and multitouch works fine I wouldn't need a physical keyboard I guess. Dows the software keyboard on Android work so good as well? So I could wait for LG P990 or Moto Atrix or Nexus S.
And it seems that I'm changing provider...as my O2 Germany contract is getting more expensive...those wired guys didn't tell me that my free-sms were only for two years...and now this contract seems to be more expensive than another provider...
If you are in Australia, and thinking of going with Optus for the Milestone 2, maybe call them to confirm.
I put in an order almost 3 weeks ago now for a Milestone 2 (re-contracting) and still haven't received the phone even though they have stock and it was apparently only going to take 3 days for delivery.
After half a dozen calls to Activations/Delivery Dept. @ Optus, still no phone...some "problem" with these phones at the warehouse in Sydney.
It's been escalated twice by team leaders to no avail.
So yeah, if you're going with Optus, maybe call them to confirm issue with the Milestone 2s before ordering or you may get stuck waiting in limbo too...
I learnt my lesson the last two times I tried ordering a phone from them, easier to cancel the order and go walk into a store. (Obviously you don't get the same 3 months free etc as you do ordering online).

The keyboard issue is a problem with the rom. There is a thread about it on android forums.com but I'm not aloud to post a link.
Hello.
In a few months (march) i gone get the new phone from the operator. I have a dillema what to choose - Orig. Moto Milestone or Defy which i would to sell and buy Milestone 2. But I would like to know about the future of this phone because at this moment there is no roms for this phone. How do You think, there will be some roms in a future or Moto has discouraged developers and users (known reasons...) at all? I'm asking because with stock FW with motoblur it is so laggy but i know it can more with this realy good hardware.
As I was going to by a MS2, i googled around...and found out that a lot of better devices, but without physical keybaord, will be released soon! Have a look at benchmark-results of LG Optimus 2X Speed or HTC Desire HD or HTC Glacier, Samsung Galaxs S2... if you don't need a physical keyboard, I'd wait till WMC is over and manufacturers provide some really good devices as far as MS2 is still out of date: encrypted bootloader and no android 2.3?! Sorry...no way. Especially since there are no patches for known issues...
I was going to buy a MS2 cause of it's physical keyboard...but since I've tried onscreen keaboard on WinMob6.5 HTC HD2 and HTC Desire with Android 2.1 I think I don't need physical keyboard any more!
Give it a shot and try out the 4" onscreen software keyboard - it's really good, u won't regret it!
That way u can get a big ammont of speed by buying a phone without MotoBlur and that crap...and especially without encrypted bootloader!
If u'd like to get newest Android updates....go for the Nexus S. It seems to be one of the devices with the fastest updates!
You are right.. dont buy it its just annoying to have a locked bootloader... buy the Optimus x2 its a awsome device with a big future and Dual core zomg!...
or even the Desire HD, i was about to get it ... but no i got the stupid MS2..
when I'd get a new device, I would choose between them.
HTC Thunderbolt 4G - DualCore 1,2Ghz??, stand on it's back, 1800 mAh battery!
Samsung Galaxy S2 - 16GB + SD, DualCore
Xperia Arc - Android 2.3, nice components....but as my actual phone is a Xperia X1 and there war bad support...I'm not going to buy a Sony-Ericsson next time!
Nexus S - fast updates, delivered with Android 2.3 or even 2.4?!
LG P990 - HDMI-out, DualCore, delivered with Android 2.2 and updateable to 2.3 soon
Motorola Atrix - big advantage: ability to get a laptop-dock. put the device in, use it like a netbook. The revolutionizer! xD

SE Arc: same HUGE mistake by SE?

I hope SE marketing dudes can read this too!
I was a SE fanboy since the T68 and I only left them last year for the Nexus One, the reason?
HTC didn't lock everything in their Google Android phone and I can change any rom I want whenever I want, keeping me not to get bored by the same UI...
When I saw the presentation of the SE ARC I said to myself ''what a jewel!'' and was convinced to come back to SE,BUT it looks like SE doesn't want me or many many other people to get an ARC because they didn't understand the meaning of Android OS = Rooting and Custom Roms!!
Samsung in another hand understood very well the Android buyers needs and that's why the Galaxy S was a huge success...
In other words: SE is not learning from their errors or they don't want to?
Hahaha, how much do you want to hate a brand to start the 40th of such a topic. If you visit xda often you know there are hundreds of these kind of topics, tell me, why you open a new topic for this. 20 seconds of reading and you found lots of the same....
Mods, please delete this...this whole section will be a mess...just keep the flamers in one topic....

The arc is rumoured to be more open than X10. Guess we just have to wait and see
The only reason Android has been about rooting and custom roms is because the core OS has been quite crappy up til now.. and the mannfacturer UI's have been dull and not intuitive or simple... this is all moving along rather quickly now and the core OS is significantly better.. close to full dual/ multicore processor support and the UI's are getting better, more friendly..
99% of users won't want to root and install custom ROM's when the preinstalled ones work.. and work really well.... the magic of Android is that there will be lots of UI's to choose from so there'll be plenty to cater for differing tastes.. and you can customise your phone loads anyway, before you get to rooting it..

I do indeed see a lot of Galaxy S's out there, but I havnt seen anyone with a custom rom installed so that isnt the reason that it's a success.. maybe, uh, i don't know.. Clever marketing?

Quite a few of the Galaxy S's that I have seen had some sort of lagfix applied to correct the messed up filesystem that Samsung implemented but on the custom roms I'm absolutely with you.

Exactly. The X10 , like almost all other Android devices, is lacking with the stock software, which is why people root and use custom roms. I think that Sony Ericsson might be the first to deliver a fully satisfying 'stock' experience with the new Xperia series, and so that basically eliminates the need to root/rom.

yes.. for most.. but there will always be the hardcore minority who will want to root it regardless of how good the stock ROM is - to remove apps they don't use, or change the UI in a way that you can't on a non-rooted phone!

Exactly, but as you said it's only a hardcore minority, and they should try to understand why Sony Ericsson (or other manufacturers) can't always make sure everything is the way they want it to be!
The minority nowadays are the ones who don't want to root and use custom roms
Even if the stock rom is awesome it's still better to make it faster and enhance some components like camera and audio, now if you are a X10 user and can't enjoy custom roms like we are with HTC it's normal that you live in a world where rooting is like a crime
Oh by the way HTC Sense is awesome that's why I use it from time to time on my N1,now I want speed and smoothness so I am using MIUI,tomorrow when the stock gingerbread will have trackball wake and high def camera I will flash its custom rom
Yes yes most custom roms are based on stock roms so you lose nothing you just get more

I beg to differ, think about it, how many members here for the X10 section? 100k? 200K? I don't think we exceed 10k to be honest. Xperia sold in 2010 more than 9 million devices. Calculate that then you'll understand that we are the minorities here, 10% maximum
I'm getting an Arc, and I for instance won't be rooting it or putting a custom rom on it. The X10, I would, just for JIT, but that's about it really... Oh well!
I've just had a look.. and there's current c500 people viewing the X10 forums.. so yeah.. 10k is probably about right.. although alot of them won't have rooted either!

Then 10% is probably too much

0.1% of 9 million is 9000... 1% is 90,000.. so I think we can safely pitch in at less than 1% will have rooted the phone. And sadly for them, they're also oblivious of how much more it can do once rooted!
guys i really wanna buy the xperia neo/ arc (havent yet decided ) but the only thing keeping me away from this decision is the locked bootloader question..
does anyone know whether se is still keeping it locked ? or they finally lstarted listening to people ?
thanks in advance

It will remain locked. Same with other companies as they are now asking SE's advice in locking their device. Atrix should be one of the new handsets that are signed locked.
darn fools all of them
but on the other hand, what IS the actual benefit from having the bootloader unlocked ? installing other kernels to implement roms easier ? OCing ? if thats all then im not exatcly impressed
ofc.. the easy rom implement is sweet, but people seem to be getting around the problem and making roms anyway

well, you're locked to roms which are made for your kernel version, if you have a locked bootloader
anyway I'm not really too fussed regarding locked bootloader tbh, I want a Android phone that has excellent multimedia options, with sleek design and extremely potent camera, that's exactly what Arc is - I bought x8 just to test out Android and honestly I can't say I'm too dissapointed with them deciding not to support old xperia line of products
I'll be super annoyed if they don't provide future support for the arc though, minimum 2+ years support is what all the mobile phone companies should do with their phones
SE has learned that it doesn't matter and that they can get away with it. It's likely that android will stay on the 2.3/4. Xxxx for a while for phones. But I don't think that they will support any phone past a year anymore.
