You are not alone. The last 6 months for me has included:
iPhone 3GS - Backflip - Blackberry Bold - iPhone 3GS - Nexus One - HTC Legend - iPhone 4 - Nexus One - iPhone 4 - Inspire 4G - Atrix 4G
Needless to say, my fiancée is going to kill me one of these days...

Cars? Yes. I have owned almost 20 different vehicles in the last ten years.
Clothes? No. I still have some clothes that were "cool" in the 90's.

I've been saying those other phones dont come close for a while. The Captivate is garbage with it's broken GPS and laggy file sytem and Samsungs poor support. I returned mine after 2 weeks. The Inspire is nice but it's an old design with god awfull battery life. The Atrix is the best phone you can buy right now.

Oh dont get me started about the last 6 months. Add in the Aria, iphone 4, HD2 modified to run anything, blackberrys and a host of others.
im stil wandering around with all 3 devices in my bag. Inspire has Sense which is the best email and contacts software. Captivate.. I love the screen and the camera and video and audio apps are fantastic. Atrix becuase its a generation ahead of those 2 devices and has the best battery life. Im going crazy from it. Dont get me started on what I am going to do when that 4.5 inch screen Samsung hits.
One thing I like about the Atrix is that I CANNOT change the ROM. saves me HOURS of wasted time and allows me to go to sleep before 3am. I am a device and ROM junkie.

Sleep? What's that?

I have an update available and I'm debating between the Inspire and Atrix. I want to load custom Roms and have control over my phone when I have it. But also would like the FF camera and HDMI output. What do you guys suggest?

Nexus One to Atrix?????
Hi, I have a Nexus One, Rooted, Modded, Changed, altered!, well you get the point. I'm considering getting the Atrix. Opinions?

Honestly? I would wait for a Bell/Rogers/Telus Nexus S if you plan on being on AT&T. I will probably end up picking one up when it gets released.

The atrix look promising BUT The dock (ALL of them) require a Tether plan, soo that the fisrt thing to change. There is no ROM or bootloader aviable yet. I'm very interested on it for the same features you mention. The GPS is the best GPS that I have tested. I have a Nexus One, soo i'm in doubt.

Sorry, didn't realize at first you wanted to use your upgrade. Well, you can probably wait a couple months to see what else will be out this year. AT&T is planning on releasing like a dozen Android phones this year.

Not yet, they don't want to take away any thunder from the recent releases but I hope AT&T finally decides to come out with a HIGH-END Android slider this year.

iPhone3gs - Xperia X10 - iPhone4 -HTC HD2 - Inspire 4g - iPhone4 - Atrix
That is the last 3 months or so.

Evo to iPhone 4 to captivate to focus to captivate to iPhone to captivate to nexus s to sell venue pro to nexus s to Atrix to iPhone to Atrix to iPhone. Lol. Last 6 months.

I came to the Atrix from a rooted, modded, changed, altered Nexus One No regrets here. Honestly, I flashed a lot of ROMs with my N1 and if I never get to flash a full, true ROM with this phone, I don't care. I like it so much more than my Nexus. The screen (I can see the Atrix in the sunlight!), the size of the screen, the speed, touch sensitivity, etc. Plus I live in a strong AT&T area and do not have problems like some do.
I would like HSUPA enabled, but from what is floating around here, AT&T is supposed to be "turning on" HSUPA at some point.

"Nexus One isn't a failure so much as a casualty of the success of the next wave of Android smartphones. In a few months, I'm sure we'll be saying the same things about the Incredible and the Evo 4G."
Some people may be bothered with this, but I am happy with my Nexus One. I have no buyers remorse.
I don't view my N1 as obsolete in any way at all and am quite happy with it, it's no worse than the Incredible and all aspects of the device ooze performance
phones are starting to become like computers now. as soon as you buy one a new and better one comes out tomorrow.
and what sucks about is...you're suck with a 2 year contract.
So adding two features equals "leapfrogged" now?
What a load of crap. Who has FroYo now? Yeah, that's what I thought.
I always f*cking hate these posts. I really don't want to hear doom and gloom.
Definitely don't feel any remorse.
My phone is JUST as good as the ones that are coming out NOW.
Yea, 8MP cam + dual flash, but cmon, the pictures are hardly better.
Plus the nexus LOOKS better than both of those.

SERIOUSLY, people are rediculous....... I stayed with DDR400 until DDR32000 came out because it was a serious step up...... There is nothing that screams "OH MY GOD INNOVATION" about either phone..... My next phone will be when my Nexus no longer has the NAND capacity for the current Android version. I love my Nexus
i'm with mortzz on this one. we have a phone that we can do whatever we want to do to it. i'd MUCH rather have this. i'm on the fence about the evo, but until we can get real system access (yeah, i saw the root article, but i'll believe it when i see it), custom ROM's, etc, i'll stick with the N1. which, btw, is STILL the sexiest phone i've ever seen. girl i'm seeing has the incredible, and...no thanks. not in comparison. it's a nice phone, if you have to have verizon. but, i don't
i do however have to get a sprint device. so...i may have to break contract with tmo and get the evo. otherwise, my school is going to stick me with the freaking touch pro 2 as my pager. lord what a step back that will be. but, at least if i take that, i can keep my N1
Uh. What?
Incredible and Evo won't get FroYo until the end of this year.
How about we come back to this article then so we can point and laugh?
Having root >>>> anything else.
Have any high-end phones since the Nexus achieved full root? I mean cracked bootloader and all. Desire, Legend, new Droids - none have the kind of access we do. Heck, we may have the best fully root-able hardware HTC will ever release.
I dont think the Incredible is any better than the N1, i've played witht he incredible and it feels cheap plastic like and the camera sucks as well. I like the feel of the N1 and like the looks of it. The Evo is a whole different story...

They have "root" meaning they have su permissions. AFAIK they don't have write permissions to the partitions, so it's pretty worthless.
Only thing i regret about my Nexus One is that apparently the Desire and Incredible both have touchscreens that fixed the multitouch issues.
Other than that the idea of having basically a google developement phone surpasses any of the other current phones, maybe when we see a decent hardware upgrade, then it will be a different story, but hopefully Google continues to make new Nexus phones.

That is sad. So they have the same MT issue as us, a much smaller dev front, usb-bricking issues while flashing roms, no full solution for being rooted/unlocked...took htc ages to release the kernel...they won't see froyo for ages (officially).
Not much to be ... wait for it... desired

How many points does a Galaxy register again? I'm guessing more than 2
In the UK, the N1/Desire is still the King. Desire = UK incredible, but is LITERALLY an N1, and I doubt we will ever see the Evo here [not even a whisp of 4g network].
Even if they did, all the incredible has is the less buggy touch matrix, although this has been nicely 'fixed' in froyo. The evo is a different breed of phone, id never buy it purely based on the fact that i like thinks to fit in my pocket xD
Until I see a snapgradon 1.3+, 1GB RAM, a TRUE 8mp+ cam, froyo, new gen OLED/better, my N1 can sleep with my girl any day.

haha my friend was a tad jealous of me. he has the Hero and i like his sense ui. but the minute froyo came out, i installed it. i showed him how i can play hulu, i showed him that i got live wallpapers (of course he doesn't have 2.1) and the rest of the froyo goodness. and outta jealousy, he was like "oh well im gonna get a phone thats better than that. im give to get the Evo 4G that has everything the nexus one has and more, including Android 2.2" and i was like "riiiiight. just like the hero was supposed to (officially) get 2.1 right?" and he stood quiet lol idk about all of you guys but i don't really care for 2 led lights. im good with just one. as for 4G, i like to have the freedom to switch between my N1, my BB Curve 8310, and my iPhone 3GS with the simple swap of a SIM card so im great with my Sexy Nexy

I personally do not find anything on the next gen phones ( at least the ones displayed at CES ) that I would trade my fascinate in for. I am going to wait for a bit.
4G just isn't in my area yet. I am between 2 markets.
Where I live I dont get 4g but I travel a lot and some of the places I go have 4g. I am interested in the thunderbolt because it has the large screen and its not motorola.
I have 4g coverage in my area, work and home. But going to hold onto the Fascinate until something peaks my interest. Seems like all the 4g phones have 4.3" screens. Seems kinda big to me...
jv
I am interested to see how the orion and tegra 2 do. I already have heard many say there is a large battery drain with the tegra 2.
Upon further digging the snapdragon isnt the same as the dinc, its a next gen one, still not dual core though, heres a comparison against the samsung for 3d
http://www.mobiletechworld.com/2010...htc-desire-hd-vs-samsung-galaxy-s/#more-17339
Considering 4G won't be in my area until end of year, I'll start looking then.
However, my next phone will have to have these conditions:
1. Dual Core
2. Rear Camera of 8MB or >
3. Front Camera of 2MB or >
4. Android 2.4 or >
5. USB connection
6. SD card support
7. Ability to become PC. i.e. Moto's Atrix laptop doc or similar doc that would allow connection to full screen/keyboard (or phone would be kb/mouse).
I think these requirements are easily doable by end of the year. Plus, I don't think battery is going to be very much affected as some think by dual core. Most phones now use a 1500mh battery whereas the notes for dual cores so far are 2000mh batteries. So, I'm betting life is roughly the same.
Though, by next year we need to see a newer technology for portable devices.
Yeah, I really like the Atrix, its got all the stuff, and 1gb of ram. For some reason no one else is making that much ram on the phone. I just dont like how moto locks their phones, I get 2 upgrades a year since I have two phones so I am planning, right now, on getting the thunderbolt and then something around september.

I'm going to wait for the hardware to mature first.
1) 4G is not available in my area.
2) Battery life? Everyone is focused on 4G and dual-core... nobody has said a peep about battery life.
3) I'm in love with the Samsung Fascinate hardware. Going to an LG or HTC phone feels like a step backwards.
4) Hackability. I want to only buy phones with lots of custom ROM support, and will wait to see how the modding / ROM scene develops first.
5) I don't buy new phones. I wait at least 2 months, then buy used devices. I can use the phone for several months, then sell the phone as used for about the same price I paid. Doing this allows me to frequently switch devices, so I can switch hardware almost at-will at no cost to me.
https://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key=0AnCYASmJQAUhdGlsbDVVZFpyNnRQWTF2RE9IZUxvN3c&hl=en
Theres a full comparison of known stuff at this time, battery life is mentioned in there
I've just come to the conclusion that I am getting an HTC when my time is up. I really love this phone but the lack of updates from Samsung is just too much. This is my 4th samsung. I had the i760, the omnia 1 and 2 and now the Fascinate. I will not throw any more money to them.
just my 2 cents.

I honestly love the phone. Not that I wanna be a poser froyo boy but I think we deserve to have the latest and greatest. This phone has such potential but when you see what's coming out as far as in OS improvements and your not sure if or when it is going to be put on your phone I can't stand it. Oh well. I have one more year for a new every two so I'll just enjoy this pohone until I can get a 4G phone.

Although I'm fairly sure 4g is available in my area (I live in Chicago), I'm totally content with my Fascinate at the moment. I'm planning on waiting a while for the next wave of 4g phones before I consider making the switch.

Yeah, going to have to be sure the next phone is going to last me a few years seeing as Verizon is getting rid of it's new every two program. I wonder what they are going to replace it with, "Get Screwed every two"?
jv
big thing I am looking at with the thunderbolt is the xda community and mods possible with it, all htc phones have had great support from xda. Modding is my #1 reason for getting a phone, I thought the fascinate would have a great community since it was all unlocked and open sourced, but that fell short. Not slamming JT or Dirrk, geeknik...etc, they have all done outstanding work, but I thought it was going to be like the original droid crazy, w/ custom roms left and right. I know the HTCs pretty much carry that and I am guessing they will be able to port anything over. My 2nd phone down the road this year will be based on HW, something crazy again, I dont like having a slow phone.
My brother-in-law Facebook'ed a message earlier this morning.
He is a die-hard Apple fanboy, has been waiting for a Verizon iPhone for the past 3 years, and just got his Verizon iPhone 4 yesterday. 2 months ago, I convinced him to buy an Android phone, and taught him how to root it and play with custom ROMs.
"Not impressed with the iPhone, hate the stock OS. Wish I could put a custom ROM on it."
That makes me happy.

Atrix has the best hardware but won't get custom roms. The Desire HD has lots of custom roms.
The N1 is too old to get as a new phone now.
If I had to pick one of the three by Wednesday it would be the Desire HD. Motorola is a deal breaker for me as of today.
I have both the Nexus One and the Inspire, and am currently conflicted as to which one to use for everyday use. Right now I am on the N1 with Gingerbread, and waiting for a 2.3 release for the Inspire. Both are very capable phones, though I have had several major crashes on a bone stock Inspire.
The Nexus One was a recent thank you gift from a client, and the Inspire was a replacement from AT&T for the Captivate.
Atrix if hardware specs are important for you.
Desire HD if you want custom roms
N1 is the lousiest in terms of specs between the 3 phones, but is google branded and have the latest gingerbread official rom

May be N1 is a too old to buy but it is not the lousiest... it is just an old hardware which was the best out there at the time... it still is better build quality than the DHD IMO, may be it is quiet comparable to the Atrix atleast considering build quality.
Again, it all depends on what's coming up next and I personally prefer Atrix if I was lucky to get it on any of the canadian careers

N1 is still a great phone. But the Motorola Atrix is sweet in hardware. I going to have to up a MAX phone. (Motorola Atrix)
I looked at the atrix today, and was surprised at how small it is. Not much bigger than the n1

I agree. Most people don't root so as long as you are one of the many that don't then go for the Atrix 4g. 1930mAh battery is a game changer!
Well now that I have the Nexus I fell as though I can make a good argument.
I used the Atrix 4G all day, every day for about 5 days when I first got it, then traded my iPad for the Nexus o1
At this point, I have both of those and a Captivate, which I used tto compare the speeds.
Having them all hooked up over wifi aand loading the full Engadget page, the Atrix came in first with the Nexus coming maybe 2 seconds later at the most.
Pages load quickly, embedded flash plays nicely as well. I love the size and notification lights too.
All in all, I would say to get the Nexus one now (Haven't used the Desire) and save your upgrade for later this year; at least that's what I'm doing.
Personally I'm waiting, but if you have to buy then get the Atrix.

thinking about exchanging for nexus S. thoughts?

i got my atrix from best buy 3 weeks ago and i am still within my 30 day exchange period. if you didn't already know, the Nexus S was released today for AT&T at best buy (subsized $99). i know the Nexus S is an mildly inferior spec wise, however, with the plethora of ROMs available (including CM7), switching to the Nexus S seems very enticing. i know the atrix will eventually get AOSP ROMS, but i miss the good ole days on my Nexus One with vanilla android, CM7, etc. Obviously there will be a bias here because I am posting in the atrix forum. but anyone have any thoughts on this? ive read all the phonedog, cnet, youtube, reviews/comparisons on the 2 devices, but I wanted to ask the XDA community.
couple of points:
- hspa+ doesn't seem to be a huge issue for where i live because the max speedtest i ever got on my atrix was 2.9mb/s DL and 1.8 UP (running samcripp's ninja 4.5 w/ faux kernel and latest radio). im assuming even the 3G Nexus S will achieve similar speeds as my buddys iPhone 4 gets 2.8-3.0MBps in our area.
- not a fan of the atrix's color accuracy. samoled looks better to my eyes, despite lower resolution.
anyone that has owned a Nexus S or knows anything about it, please give me your input. thanks fellas/ladies

A friend of mine owns the nexus S and I own the atrix.
It's a nice phone with AOSP gingerbread (and many roms) but I don't think it's very futureproof which puts me off of it.
The source code is being released for atrix gingerbread on 7/29 from the 4.5.91 build, and when that happens, there truly will be an AOSP/CM7 build for the atrix within a week or two.
If you want a better experience with your phone right now (or for the next 4-6 months) I would go with the nexus S, but from an investment point of view the atrix is a far better choice. I enjoy it.
Atrix has dual cores and is more recent. Though that curved screen on the Nexus S looks nice

+1 in a month when cm7 and other roms are available your going to be a little disappointed you hadnt waited out a little longer and got the same or similar ui exprience with more speed and a longer time line in terms of being future proof. soon the nexus s will be completely outdated while the atrix wont
I own both phones. The nexus s is a great phone. Im using launcherpro on both with the exact same homescreen setup and the atrix is noticeably faster. Web browsing is a LOT faster on the atrix as well. And my atrix is still on 2.2. What i like about the nexus s is the camera. It completely destroys the atrix cam especially on night shots. 2.3 is also a plus along with getting first the udates that google will release. I thought i could use the nexus s as my main phone but still ended up using my atrix a lot more.

Honestly, i almost thought about buying the nexus S before the Atrix was released. But like they said, it's not future proof, single core(not the biggest deal breaker, but dual core does make a difference). The main reason i didn't get it was because it doesn't have an sdcard slot, if it had an sdcard slot then i would've got it, another thing is the Atrix's battery is the largest battery in a phone straight out of the box, sure there are extended batteries out there that u could get, but they're so big that they will pretty much double the thickness of your phone if not more which will most likely make your phone uncomfortable after a while.
But overall the Nexus S is a great device if your not too worried about mods/roms, but once these new firmwares/roms are released that require more advanced hardware or software that's not compatible with the nexus S, then you'll be looking for another phone, while a more future proof phone like the Atrix will be able to keep up
just something to think about

Atrix has dual cores and is more recent. Though that curved screen on the Nexus S looks nice

The screen isn't curved, only the glass cover is.

Cyanogen replied to a question about Atrix CM7 on Jun 26 stating that they'd probably begin working on it soon. This was right after the unlock was released. You can be sure that with the GB source release they'll be jumping on it both feet first, as they have CM7 for both the T-Mobile G2X and LG Optimus already (other similar Tegra 2 devices).

Oh lol, nvm then. I just saw the pic in a review. Looked curved to me

ANY phone lacking Micro SD, is an automatic deal breaker for me.
That's why I still have and rather use an SGS over the Nexus...
color accuracy on the super amoled displays is horrible imo. it looks like a tv in vivid mode
With an unlocked bootloader, the Atrix puts the Nexus S to shame. The screen on the Nexus S isn't my cup of tea either, the colors are sooooo exaggerated.
Not to mention, with rumors flying around of a Nexus 4G being released first for AT&T in October with Ice Cream Sandwich, the Nexus S will be a thing of the past. If you're getting the Nexus S in hopes of always getting the latest from Google first, remember how well (sarcasm) they treated Nexus One owners ;-)
Finally, honestly, pure Android experience is nice, but Moto does an awesome job (in my opinion) filling in for some key nice features. For example, the stock gallery app on Android is HORRID, it will make you want to stab yourself while you wait for it to load up new photos. Moto on the other hand, did an awesome job with their gallery app, more so especially with Gingerbread for the Atrix.

Same for me. How do Google expect to showcase their platform with a neutered phone? Ridiculous.
thank you to everyone! i never expected so many helpful responses. unfortunately, this makes my decision even harder. i am the type of person that changes phone literally every 3 months. i will be getting the iPhone 5(4S or whatever) when it comes out. Don't get me wrong, I love android, but I also have a hidden passion for iOS devices. However, whichever android phone I decide upon, I will be keeping. If we really are going to be getting true AOSP ROMS on the atrix in the coming weeks, I think I am just going to stick with it. The Nexus S just look so sexy though. ugh. tough call here. but thanks again everyone

I believe Samcripp is working on making Ninja SF into an AOSP ROM (already themed as such)
Plus, why get the Nexus S now, when the next one is rumored(?) to be coming out soon?
no point in getting nexus S now. it's been out too long and there are many phones now that are better than it spec wise.
like some have said, you should wait for the next nexus phone.
one thing great about nexus phones is that they get all the new updates faster than others. i held my nexus one for more than 1 year before selling it for something better. but while all the software updates are good, the phone eventually got too laggy for me even with launchers and other things running on it.
if you're getting an iphone 5.... i have no words for you
they are already working on a new nexus, too bad samsung is making it. ihope they change it.

The atrix is going to be outdated before the nexus s because the nexus s will keep getting updates before any phone which will keep it up to date. Afterall it is a Google phone and Google is bound to release 2.4 fairly soon and by that time, nexus s would have the newest update while the atrix would remain on 2.3 for another 4-5 months.

Large upgrade for others? ^_^

I'm upgrading from a Sprint Evo 4G and I'm blown away when I compare the specs of the two phones, regardless of what Samsung throws out in the next few weeks I'm getting the One, HTC build quality just blows me away, my Evo 4G lasted 2 1/2 years or so and the battery charges like new, and the phone is 95 percent mint condition, with the tiniest scratch on the screen from a drunk accident.
Who else is making a drastic upgrade and from what model?
I'm upgrading from an iPhone 4 I've had for 2 and a half years so this is big for me, especially since I'm moving over from iOS to android. I can't wait.

I'm upgrading from a Samsung Vibrant. I would have kept the device because it was actually good enough for me. But I damaged the LCD cable and now it displays red-tinted colors. This, and some previous problems like a (very) scratched screen, SD card slot half-broken, GPS never works, camera lens missing....
Well, I think I need a replacement

I'm definitely gonna love it. While a jailbroken iPhone was fun and all, and still pretty customizable, It will never have the extensible customization android has. Also Android has come a long way since the time i got my iPhone 4. Can't wait to root my device when a root becomes available. Been reading up on all my stuff so i won't be a total noob when I get my HTC One.
I'm coming from the old trusty mytouch 4g. Been having this baby for over 2 years. It's time for an upgrade.

The mytouch4G was my favorite phone next to my s3. Still runs great, after two plus years. Stepdaughter uses it now and she loves it.
This is the 1st HTC phone I have been interested since the Amaze, which the wife has now. I wasn't that big on the Amaze acfually, but was a nice phone hardware wise.
See how it goes after the s4 is launched.

Upgrading from the Nexus One I've been using since April or May 2010. It's gonna make an awesome difference.

Yup, a lot of my friends still don't believe my mytouch is running the same OS as them and in some cases still very much powerful. If it wasn't for the One being announced, I probably would've stuck with it for a few more month maybe another year. But the One sold me.
I bought the amaze for my wife. It's a very good device. It just never got that support it needed. I'm probably one of the few that think the camera is great.

I'm in the same boat as you, also 95% sure I want the One but want to see what Samsung is rolling out first and since I'm in the US I don't have a choice in the matter.
Upgrading from a SGII. Looking forward to a phone that doesn't feel like a kids toy.

Same case here! I went to the town in Liverpool to have a hands-on today. I must say the phone is stunning, and without any doubt captures amazing photos, let alone the extra capabilities to shoot slow-motion videos and sequence shots and the ability to edit them thereafter. Boomsound is not only decent, it is so loud that it could easily fill up a small reading room without any assistance of external speakers. The sound is, of course, crisp and clear.
Ever since the phone is rumoured to release i have been monitoring its progress. Have to regrettably admit that i have never been that hardworking in my studies. HTC One definitely lives up to my expectations, in fact it surpasses them.
Ordered the Silver once i got back. Now I'm dying to get it.
Upgrading from the HTC Incredible S myself, there's nothing actually wrong with the phone, and nothing on the market was even remotely luring me into buying it until I saw the HTC One. I am completely sold on it, never been a fan of GS3 (sure, awesome specs, but I really didn't like the way it handled/felt)
My biggest problem is picking the color, I absolutely adore both black and silver, so I picked the silver out of a coin toss
Upgrading from my HTC sensation. While it served me well, I can't resist the HTC One. Was nowhere near as interested in last year's One-X series...have to say that I'm genuinely excited and counting the days until my pre-order arrives.
DHD all the way! I'll still be keeping it

I will be leaving my trusty 3VO. Though not a huge upgrade, it's still quite the upgrade, and I'm especially liking all I've seen about the upgrade in the camera! I will miss my familiarity, as I changed my digitizer twice and my wife's once, and REALLY miss my lack of volume down button (from the 1st digitizer change)...
I'm coming from my (nearly) 3 year old HTC Desire.... Can't wait! got the black version on pre-order.
Upgrading from MyTouch 4g Slide. It all started when the digitizer got broken into pieces had it replaced then a few weeks it totally shut itself down permanently. Right now am using my HTC Sensation so yeah a big upgrade for me.
