Why Nexus One Was Leapfrogged by HTC Incredible and Evo 4G - Nexus One General

Google Exec Hints at Why Nexus One Was Leapfrogged by HTC Incredible, Evo 4G
http://googlewatch.eweek.com/content/android_vs_iphone/google_exec_hints_at_why_nexus_one_was_leapfrogged_by_htc_incredible_evo_4g.html
"Nexus One isn't a failure so much as a casualty of the success of the next wave of Android smartphones. In a few months, I'm sure we'll be saying the same things about the Incredible and the Evo 4G."
Some people may be bothered with this, but I am happy with my Nexus One. I have no buyers remorse.

I don't view my N1 as obsolete in any way at all and am quite happy with it, it's no worse than the Incredible and all aspects of the device ooze performance

phones are starting to become like computers now. as soon as you buy one a new and better one comes out tomorrow.
and what sucks about is...you're suck with a 2 year contract.

So adding two features equals "leapfrogged" now?
What a load of crap. Who has FroYo now? Yeah, that's what I thought.

I always f*cking hate these posts. I really don't want to hear doom and gloom.

Definitely don't feel any remorse.
My phone is JUST as good as the ones that are coming out NOW.
Yea, 8MP cam + dual flash, but cmon, the pictures are hardly better.
Plus the nexus LOOKS better than both of those.

SERIOUSLY, people are rediculous....... I stayed with DDR400 until DDR32000 came out because it was a serious step up...... There is nothing that screams "OH MY GOD INNOVATION" about either phone..... My next phone will be when my Nexus no longer has the NAND capacity for the current Android version. I love my Nexus

i'm with mortzz on this one. we have a phone that we can do whatever we want to do to it. i'd MUCH rather have this. i'm on the fence about the evo, but until we can get real system access (yeah, i saw the root article, but i'll believe it when i see it), custom ROM's, etc, i'll stick with the N1. which, btw, is STILL the sexiest phone i've ever seen. girl i'm seeing has the incredible, and...no thanks. not in comparison. it's a nice phone, if you have to have verizon. but, i don't
i do however have to get a sprint device. so...i may have to break contract with tmo and get the evo. otherwise, my school is going to stick me with the freaking touch pro 2 as my pager. lord what a step back that will be. but, at least if i take that, i can keep my N1

Uh. What?
Incredible and Evo won't get FroYo until the end of this year.
How about we come back to this article then so we can point and laugh?

Having root >>>> anything else.
Have any high-end phones since the Nexus achieved full root? I mean cracked bootloader and all. Desire, Legend, new Droids - none have the kind of access we do. Heck, we may have the best fully root-able hardware HTC will ever release.

I dont think the Incredible is any better than the N1, i've played witht he incredible and it feels cheap plastic like and the camera sucks as well. I like the feel of the N1 and like the looks of it. The Evo is a whole different story...

They have "root" meaning they have su permissions. AFAIK they don't have write permissions to the partitions, so it's pretty worthless.

Only thing i regret about my Nexus One is that apparently the Desire and Incredible both have touchscreens that fixed the multitouch issues.
Other than that the idea of having basically a google developement phone surpasses any of the other current phones, maybe when we see a decent hardware upgrade, then it will be a different story, but hopefully Google continues to make new Nexus phones.

That is sad. So they have the same MT issue as us, a much smaller dev front, usb-bricking issues while flashing roms, no full solution for being rooted/unlocked...took htc ages to release the kernel...they won't see froyo for ages (officially).
Not much to be ... wait for it... desired

How many points does a Galaxy register again? I'm guessing more than 2

In the UK, the N1/Desire is still the King. Desire = UK incredible, but is LITERALLY an N1, and I doubt we will ever see the Evo here [not even a whisp of 4g network].
Even if they did, all the incredible has is the less buggy touch matrix, although this has been nicely 'fixed' in froyo. The evo is a different breed of phone, id never buy it purely based on the fact that i like thinks to fit in my pocket xD
Until I see a snapgradon 1.3+, 1GB RAM, a TRUE 8mp+ cam, froyo, new gen OLED/better, my N1 can sleep with my girl any day.

that makes two of us i love man I LOVE MY NEXUS ONE

haha my friend was a tad jealous of me. he has the Hero and i like his sense ui. but the minute froyo came out, i installed it. i showed him how i can play hulu, i showed him that i got live wallpapers (of course he doesn't have 2.1) and the rest of the froyo goodness. and outta jealousy, he was like "oh well im gonna get a phone thats better than that. im give to get the Evo 4G that has everything the nexus one has and more, including Android 2.2" and i was like "riiiiight. just like the hero was supposed to (officially) get 2.1 right?" and he stood quiet lol idk about all of you guys but i don't really care for 2 led lights. im good with just one. as for 4G, i like to have the freedom to switch between my N1, my BB Curve 8310, and my iPhone 3GS with the simple swap of a SIM card so im great with my Sexy Nexy

Nexus one envy

So I just played with an N1 for the very first time and must say I wish this phone had come to Sprint as planned a few months back.
While I love my Evo there's just something about the N1 I like more. The trackball for notifications is wicked and the size is just right. I love the size of the screen on Evo but after all this time I still can't get comfortable using it as a phone.
Anyone else wish the Nexus were available as a cdma?

Nexus/Evo same phone pretty much. The nexus has a amoled display and stock Android 2.2. Other than that the Evo is the same thing as the nexus pretty much just with a few upgrades and extras when it comes to hardware, so in actuality, you sort of already have a nexus one sort of on steroids

Wait until the N2 comes out then you'll really have phone envy. That thing is prime to be a benchmark just as the N1 was
I had the nexus 1 and gave it to my girlfriend when the evo came out. I am a sense lover so i liked the evo a lot when it came out. Stable Sense wasnt ported to the n1 at that time. Now though whenever i hold my girls n1 i am envious. It feels perfect in the hand. Yes i like the trackball too. great for typos in the middle of a sentence. all the different trackball notifications are great too. A differnt color for every scenario. i loved the N1 docks (home and car) too. The only thing i disliked about the n1 was the screen. While it looked great indoors, outside you couldnt see anything, I mean nothing at all. It was like the screen was turned off. the N1 has some crazy talented devs too. Cant wait till next week. Hopefully the Nexus 2 rumor isnt a rumor and it'll be available with gingerbread next week.
Yeah I felt the N1 its nice in hand but once you go 4.3 you cant go back.
I would give up my Evo for a Nexus One any day... I love that phone!!! =)
Still wish I could have one, but they are really hard to find and quite expensive! Even after all this time!

The nexus 2 isn't coming out next week >< I read where it was just delayed due to hardware issues.
Besides, it's made by samsung...so IMO either get a nexus 1 or stick with the evo.
The Nexus2 or Nexus S so its called... will likely not hold a candle to either. All the hype from Samsung about the galaxy S phones and none of them are all the good.... in fact I think they are just now getting froyo.. imagine how long it will take for them to get gingerbread... if they ever do!
Sorry for the rant, but IMO there will never be another phone as good as the nexus1

I'm with ya. I'm fairly anti-samsung when it comes to Android phones. They just feel cheap and have always had very limited support by the development community and Samsung themselves. Not very experienced with moto androids but HTC builds a pretty reliable Android phone.

+1 I love HTC phones, I will say that sometimes their build quality feels rushed.. but they pump out a lot of phones. My hero and evo have had great DEV support and HTC does a pretty decent job with updates.
Samsung, IMO, is the worst when it comes to quality, dev support and updates... it's just not a good idea to have samsung make a 2nd generation nexus IMO... so so sad
i cant say i like the galaxy series, the epic feels cheap and somewhat clunky to me, htc phones have their problems as well but i'd take htc over sammy any day, it seems crazy that just a few years ago htc was selling great phones left and right and still reporting quarterly losses, now they seem to be doing better then ever and it looks like they are really starting to step it up when it comes to developing sense, hopefully they will only pick up more steam
I had the nexus one the day it came out..payed the 529 plus tax n was loving it..it was a very snappy phone running cyanogen 5..update were awesome..trackball notificatons were cool..but basically the evo is the big brother of the nexus one..evo is the ROOT of HTC

I tried out the nexus one for 30 days on at&t early this year when I was still an iphone user and must say the N1 is the DAMN SEXIEST PHONE EVER MADE! I ended up sending mine back because I couldn't justify spending $500+ on a phone. Even though I still miss the hell out of that phone I'm not sure I could get up my evo's bigger screen and 4G data.

The botched touch screen was a serious deal breaker for me with the Nexus. I had one for a while, and I liked it, but I can't go less than 4.3 now. I just can't.
The only thing I love about the N1 is the fact that it gets lightning fast updates.
Engadget just posted an article starting the nexus one will be getting gingerbread in the next few days! That is one thing to admire about it
What about the kickstand! If the nexus had a kickstand and front facing camera .... oh boy I would be tempted to get it. (Again) had the nexus before got bored of vanilla. Just flash cyanogen 6.1 on the evo. There you go you have a nexus minus the trackball. I mean if I had a nexus that's the rom I would run. Might as well. Same same.

[Q] So I have to decide by Monday

Knowing what you know now about the Epic....
My upgrade time is Monday and I need to replace my old Touch Pro (can you imagine I am still using it). I would like the Epic becuase of the keyboard, and the hardware does look more impressive. However the EVO fanboys are a bit much and you cannot get a good review of Epic from them.
So I am asking you all what do you think... Should I take the Epic and be happy? I have to extend my contract 2 years and I want to be happy with my decision. The angst here over GPS and Froyo has me thinking it might be safer to go to Evo w/o the keyboard... even though I can't stand the attitutudes of the Evo users.
Let me know what you think. Any comments I would appreciate.
For a good unbiased review see engadget. They did a thorough workup of the epic. Also I reccomend using the search function, there are multiple threads just like this and should answer ur questions.

I've read COUNTLESS posts. I am just looking for something a bit updated. It seems things change as the wind blows.
Well the ppl on the froyo leak say gps is fixed so if that and froyo are ur only 2 probs with epic, they will be solved soon with the ota (the leak is kinda buggy) which hopefully will come in the next few weeks.

I like them both. The keyboard sold the epic to me, along with the display.
I love my Epic. I play a lot of games too, so the choice was obvious to me.

I'm upgrading on thursday. I finally decided upon the epic because of the hardware keyboard, the awesome screen and the fact that I don't like sense. I went into the sprint store to get a feel for them. That definitely helped me. There have been a few moments here and there where I think "man, maybe I should get the evo." Especially after seeing how large the user community is. But I always come back to the epic. P.s. If you're the primary line then you should be eligible for yearly upgrades with the everything data plan. So you're only stuck with this phone for a year. Or give it thirty days ad switch to the evo if you're not satisfied.
I just got my epic and love it.
The only other phone I think I would consider is the G2 by T-mobile.
I wish we had froyo already but it should be out in a few weeks.
The epic's display is awesome.

Same here. I originally wanted Evo (didn't we all)... then I investigated Epic and found out its a whole lot more than just a keyboard for $50. The added hardware (processor, display, gpu, etc, etc, etc) make me think its plumb silly to buy an Evo... but man those Evo owners are very loud. No one is saying their phone is bad... obviously its great, but boy do they like to cut down the Epic.
In regards to primary line stuff... its currently set to my wife's line. She is on blackberry, but I will probably upgrade her to an Epic later this year so that we are on the same phone (unless a dual core 3.0 phone comes out... then I get it and she gets the Epic ).
I just jumped from an Evo to the Epic and this is my honest advice. If you are here for roms go with the Evo by far. The support for the Evo on this site and the lack there of for the Epic is like night and day.
If you don't plan on Rooting your phone and wanting everything stock go with the Epic. I don't see how anyone can argue differently.

Thanks. Good advice. I like that there is a support community for Evo... but I would only root/flash if I really had to. I am not a power user... couldn't care less about overclocking (at least for now - a year from now who knows).. that being said my Touch Pro is currently unlocked/flashed to MightyROM, so it's not out of the question. I certainly will not be planning to root/flash anytime before official Froyo is released on Epic.
Epic obviously doesn't have same dev community as evo, but we do have a good growing dev community. We have 4 or 5 solid roms out right now and even if that number doesn't grow I'm happy, its about quality not quantity.

skywalkr2, I worked at Sprint for over 8 years (great place to work, left for an amazing opportunity elsewhere) and as a Pre owner, I was RABIDLY anticipating a new device this year to replace my Pre (greatest software on the market, worst hardware). I'm at work now and took a short break to look at my phone and happened to see this thread in the XDA app. As such, I don't have time at this moment to give my full opinion, but I can tell you that NOBODY did more research on this exact question than I did... and I ended up choosing the EVO AFTER I talked my own father into getting an Epic. I'll post the full list of reasons tonight, I just wanted to get in my two cents since obviously everyone in this forum is likely to tell you the Epic is the best. I was afraid you might see an overwhelming number of people telling you to grab an Epic and then you'd stop checking this thread.
I suggest you at least listen to my reasoning before jumping ship.

Not so fast. The reports I have seen about the GPS are mixed. For example, see this.
It does sound like one of the GPS bugs -- the bogus estimated accuracy of 30.0 meters that we see now on the Epic-- is fixed in the beta release. But to test the most serious bug -- the failure to achieve satellite lock over time because of a time-sensitive cache problem -- it will take more time and effort than these early anecdotal reports can boast. So far I have not seen any Froyo-release beta tester who seems to know how to test the GPS rigorously, and I am not risking my own phone to flash this leaked ROM.
So the overall status of the GPS is unknown, as far as I'm concerned.

Great. I will definetely listen. It's exactly why I posted over here.
Dear OP,
If I were in your shoe, I'd wait at least till Epic gets Froyo update. Then you can make apples to apples comparison between Epic and EVO (assuming Evo doesn't get 2.3 update).
Or better yet, if you are a bit more patient, wait till january, when HTC Knight (Speedy?) becomes available. If Knights come with 2.2, it's more likely to get updated to 2.3 than current EVO or EPIC. The general consensus here is that neither EVO or Epic will officially get updated to Gingerbread. If you don't want to be stock with TP till January, get a refurb HTC Hero from ebay for about $100.

I might have some perspective on this question. I had a Touch Pro 2 prior to my Epic. I thought the TP2 was a great phone. Now I don't know how I ever managed with it. So point one is, EITHER the Epic or the Evo will seem like a HUGE step up.
One of the other phones on our plan is an Evo, so I've had a fair chance to experience that phone and my Epic.
I would give both very high marks, and I think that the recent rating (can't remember from what publication) that gave them number one and number two of all phones was correct.
I waited for the Epic because I was used to the keyboard on the TP2, and thought it was very necessary. However, Once I got the Epic, with Swype, I find I almost never use the keyboard. It's still handy once in a while, but now I could live without it, as long as I have Swype.
For a short while we were successful in getting Swype to work on the Evo. When it did, the Evo really would have worked for me as well as the Epic. Alas, it has not proven possible to get the program to work reliably on there.
So oddly, the phone with the keyboard doesn't really need it because it has Swype, and the phone without a keyboard doesn't have Swype, and can't seem to have it.
That comes down to the sole "real" issue for me. Both have been nearly trouble free, and Android just annihilates Windows Mobile.
Radio Shack now has the Epic for $220.00, and the Evo for $150.00. When I bought the difference was $50.00, and then they lowered it within the first 30 days, so my total difference was only $20.00. For $20.00 more, I'd say take the Epic for sure. For $70.00 more, I'd say the scale tips in favor of the Evo.
Again, they're both just great phones. I don't think you can go "wrong" with either.
Harris
So, I have had both phones Epic & Evo. Here is my opinion about both.
Evo had a bigger screen and kickstand that I love and miss till this day. I loved the build qualitiy of the Evo, it just felt so much more durable. The evo is truly a great phone and i miss the heck outta it!
The Epic.... I love it! I love the keyboard, I tried so hard to get use to the on-screen keyboard on the EVO (even tried swype on it) and couldn't use it.. As I am a heavy texter (about 3000+ a month) the keyboard is a must for me. The screen on the Epic is well..... just EPIC! Its amazing! but then again the Evo had the bigger screen....
Both are awesome phones! If I could have both I would use the EVO to watch movies (kickstand) and to customize a lot. But I would def use the Epic as my daily phone. I strongly believe once we receive froyo there will be bigger & better things stored for us.
If you think you can live without a keyboard go for the EVO, but since your use to keyboards like the tp had then I would get the Epic.. (That is if you used it a lot?)
Like I stated both phones are great but I'd have to say Epic with the screen, keyboard & I personally think the camera quality is better on both the front and back. Defiantly the video quality is better on the Epic. 720p on the EVO looked like crap and didn't even look like 720p, the Epic is much crisp & clear IMO.
However I did miss HTC Sense (i loved the animations & clock) but with a couple apps from the market, you can make your phone feel like your using an HTC phone! Good luck on whatever you may choose, I'm sure you will be satisfied with either phone!

Better than the mytouch 4g?

Just wondering besides the screen and gingerbread what makes this phone better than the mytouch. Just curious as to why so many people want this phone when the mytouch is better in almost evey way. Please no flaming this is a real question as to why people would want this phone instead of a ohone that's already out that's equal if not better.

Pure Google.
I want my updates in a timely manner, not when tmo/htc/samsung/moto/bob from down the street want to give them out.
sold my i9000 to buy this phone because of pure android! in my opinion hardware doesn't mean anything when your software is bad like it was on my i9000. google will always aim for a good running android on their phones!

- Pure Google (stock android)
- All soft keys ( I hate the mytouch keys)
- Google's actual developer phone
- Nexus sounds better than MyTouch
Direct updates and fast updates.
No need to root it to remove unnecessary softwares since it comes with none.
More UMTS bands supported, almost it will work on 3G in the globe, forget about ATT but it supports 2100 and 900. This is a personal reason since I won't use it in the US.
MT4g keys collected so much dust in just few days of using, I think soft keys are more durable when you take this into account.
As others said, it comes down to vanilla Android - my nexus one was one of my favorite phones because it was pure android. When I got the evo and vibrant I kinda twitched when I wasn't on vanilla android (it really is a very different experience).
Not to mention, the vibrant still being on 2.1 is a JOKE (altho I've flashed froyo) - so with the nexus S, having the latest updates and essentially being Google's "test device" is excellent.
Because the MyTouch 4g has a worse processor, a worse GPU, a worse display, a worse touch screen, and well, is ugly. Oh and the Nexus S is AOSP.
Note: "ugly" = personal preference no offense intended
It's rather difficult for me to say.
I have MT4 and the screen is good, plus wifi calling is very handy when I need it.
But NS should have larger and better screen.

I've seen a lot of posts anderdroid. You seem to be some sort of arrogant samsung fanboy. All I hear from you is samsung is the best and all other devices are crap...
Do you happen to work for samsung by any chance?
No offence intended.

Chill out guys... It's phones, phones, phones, phones. No need to get all heated.
Echoing what others have said, but its true. A lot comes down to getting timely updates direct from Google.
I had a Hero before my Nexus One and although the phone was solid, the lack of updates made it a very disappointing experience. Won't do ' non-vanilla' again until manufacturers/carriers prove they will update their phones.
I have a MT4G and a Vibrant and hopefully will pick up a Nexus S tomorrow morning. The MT4g is a very nice solid phone. Having said that I must say I do prefer the Vibrant. I really cannot put my finger on why I like the Vibrant so much better.. I fooled around with the MT4G and let the remorse period end and now I have the phone. I am going to sell the MT4G. Once again though it is a very very good phone. One of the best all around phones I have ever had. Just cannot forge a connection with it.
myTouch 4G is THE phone!! if u have 4G in ur area. Brilliant specs. But I agree its ugliest looking phone ever. But as long u cover it its fine and excellent phone. I wouldnt go for Nexus S if I already had myTouch 4G. Dual Cores are round the corner. But I m fine with the specs of the Nexus S. No 4g here anyways.
PS: Nexus S is gonna be my first native android phone. Woohoo
But I have toyed around most of the android phones of either friends and family

dude, I had the same exact experience.
Ok, still tossing between the two devices. Biggest reason is the $300 price difference. Both have nice features.
Nexus S:
Love that it will get updates in a timely manner
slimmer, sexier
better screen
No 3g so with this and better screen hopefully better battery life
Larger screen
MT4G:
4G
More hardware buttons
Micro SD card slot, (options)
T-Mobile insurance to cover any time of damage
I've only used the Nexus S for a day so I'm still going to compare and see if its worth paying more for it. Any other key reasons I'm missing? Just trying to get as much information/feedback before making a decision.
If you want the best and latest, nexus S is the one...but to me also It doesn't give out anything significant over MT4G..Yes faster updates is definitely one plus of Nexus...but if you're on XDA, you most probably be into custom ROMs, and mostly within a week new updates come to popular phones..so that's not such a big thing...same goes for pure google exp...if you don't want custom UI...there are ROMs available to do that..
On the other hand MT4G gives you 4G, WiFi calling and looks are subjective..to me MT4G don't look bad though not as sexy as nexus S though...but as above poster said its $300 more...its not definately worth that IMO

How did you come up with this number? Compare the unlocked prices,
MT4G (contract free and locked) is 449 , NS unlocked and contract free is 529.

Arrogant Samsung fanboy? Everything I said in my reply was true the only thing the MyTouch 4g has on this is removeable storage and HSPA+. Which are 'necessities' at best. If you absolutely need removeable storage or more than 16gb than the Nexus S isn't for you. Other than that, I get the feeling that HTC fanboys down talk Samsung wrongly and uneducatedly so I like to shove it in their faces .
I guess I am an arrogant Samsung fanboy. Or at least, Galaxy S> fanboy. Anything prior to Galaxy S I won't say anything about. The Galaxy S line is 2nd best only to the Nexus S

Yes even on eBay you get the slightly used ones for ~ $300-350 in bidding..

[Q] Would you still buy a Samsung Epic 4G?

My wife due for a new phone. She has a HTC Touch Pro 2 now.
Would you still buy a Samsung Epic 4G or wait for something else? Here's the hitch, she loves the keyboard so... she wants a phone with a keyboard.
I've read the HTC EVO shift is not that great and the screen is smaller. That's why I was leaning toward the Epic 4G
Any suggestions would help. I know the Epic 4G is getting old and don't want her to get stuck with an older phone if a newer, better one is coming out soon.
p.s. Android phones only please. (I don't see Windows making it!)
The only thing better is the dual core, but then you get to go through all the development cycle again. Depends on whether you want stability or raw fracking power tech.

Thanks!
She will be keeping the phone with the stock rom.
I think it will be fast enough for her. She just uses it for internet, youtube, texting, emails. Nothing too major.
Yes if it for an everyday user it the perfect phone! Beautiful screen and super fast for an everyday user!

I would hold off and wait, the new phones are coming soon. You might find something you like better, if not then you could always get the epic then for less probably.

Well, if you want her to be involved in the latest tech, I'd wait a bit until there's a phone that's dual-core and has a keyboard. Unfortunately, I haven't heard anything coming soon like that, so it's your choice.
For her basic uses and stuff, she might want to wait only because the keyboard on this phone is a bit laggy in its current state.
If she's okay with that, then buy an Epic It's still a great phone.
Yea as long as she doesn't mind a little wobble here and there on her phone...
i personally would just get the nexus! its a google phone so you know it will be supported by devs and google themselves
edit: nvm i didnt see the part that said she likes the keyboard
just go with the epic
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
Absolutely! I've loved my device and I'm itching for my new one. Developing on it has been rewarding, and all the missed sleep has been worth it.
I went from the tp2 to the Epic and I don't how to say it in nice words. I had the tp2 for 1 1/2 years and if I had know how good android was compared to winmo 6.5 I would have thrown that thing in a lake. Going to the epic felt like going from a 486 dx2-66 to a quad core computer. IMOP the tp2 was the worst touch phone I have ever owned. If she is like my wife and just wants a nice phone that works and no modding then I would get the epic now. Everything on it is allmost instant when touched and I have not had any keyboard issues at all.
My epic is stock rom and rooted no custom roms. have had it for 6 months and only locked up twice so far where I had to pull the battery.

I just ordered my wife one a couple of days ago. Will be ordering my daughter one also.

The keyboard has issues with skipping letters, which makes it very difficult to type fast on, and there's a slight wobble when open (nothing drastic).
I would definitely factor in software support too, which is severely lacking with the Epic 4G. You have to consider all the bug/security/critical fixes that are a significant part of the updates. I, personally, have been having software issues from the DK28 leak to EC05, Eclair was the only one that was every completely stable for me.
for 19.99 hell yea.
i love my epic, but ive recently played around with a mytouch 4g and that thing is blazing quick and snappy. everyone here says the epic is the quickest and best non dual-core phone (and i trust them since they know more than me), but i feel that phone is more responsive. it's stock and so is mine. its running adw like my epic. why do you guys think the mytouch runs much smoother?
What kind of software problems do you have? I have seen very little on my end. Confuses me on xda where some say there are a lot of problems and some have very few to all most no problems. I type very fast on my keyboard and it never skips a beat.

Especially now that it comes with Froyo, an Epic is a no-brainer for these prices. I paid many times more and coming from an original Touch Pro, it was like going from a Dodge Dart hooptie to a Lamborghini.

Are you sure it comes with Froyo? I'm helping someone pick out a phone, and this person, like the OP's wife, will be using it completely stock and unrooted. I can't find the details on sprint.com either way, but Best Buy and Radio Shack both say 2.1 in their specs about the phone. I heard there were problems with the updates, so I'm not sure at all that it comes with 2.2, and that's a real consideration for someone who will be running this stock, I think.

I can only go by what I saw in a local Sprint store. I would hope that they would have all their stock replaced with 2.2 versions out of the box, but even if they don't, a stock 2.1 phone should receive the 2.2 upgrade over the air fairly quick. I'd just advise trying to get it updated before installing much else on it. The latest Froyo is as official as it gets and is pushed everywhere to phones which can receive it, AFAIK.
i also came from a touch pro 2 and i was amazed how good the EPIC was I think it's a great phone. Plus radiosack.com has the epic for $19.99 with a new contract and $49 upgrade. That's a steal. I like the phone so much(and hated att service so much) the price drop doesn't even bother me. The last 6 months was worth the launch price.

Oh my, thanks for that. We can't pass that up (totally new contract). If it doesn't have 2.2, I'll just go ahead and root it and put Syndicate on it.
With regard to the question the OP asked, I suppose my answer is that, yes, I would buy another Epic, at least right now. I've looked around at what Sprint currently has, and there's nothing I'd rather have than the Epic. The keyboard doesn't mean as much to me as I thought it would, but I'd still prefer the Epic to the Evo. I'm not sure the upcoming Nexus S is much better than the Epic. Now, once the Evo 3D comes out, that might be something to look at, but that's months away. I have no plans or desires to switch phones, but have been looking a lot to help someone else, and I'm glad that I discovered that the Epic is still the phone to get if you're tied to Sprint (company discount).

If the keyboard doesn't mean that much to you, you might as well wait little over a week for the nexus, for the better form factor alone. I guess you're weighing price vs size & software support, all other things being almost equal.

Dinc1/thunderbolt

Love reading all the arguments that go on here over these great phones. I have an origional first day release dinc and a thunderbolt. Dinc is still a great phone. Well worth it for a 2 yr contract even now. The thunderbolt is a larger screen super charged dinc with a 4G extra. Both are fast on 3G and wifi. I have not been disappointed with either phone. Thunderbolt has had a few more bugs, but still hasnt swayed me from an Htc phone. If you guys need something to really argue about get a Blackberry and wait on the os updates for those, lmao! Any one looking at these phones or the dinc 2, dont let these heavys scare you away. These phones are worth it. All phones now a days become ( old news) in 6 months or less but it doesnt make the old news phones less awsome to have and use. Just an opinion.

If you think about it they're really not even that big.
A tech website might have a review on YouTube or something saying that a phone is bulky, but you gotta factor in that they review phones all year long. It's their job... of COURSE they're gonna come across some smaller, thinner ones. Not to mention that the fat-ass otterbox cases people throw on their phones are bound to make it as fat as a Tricorder anyway.
They have all these macro shots of phones next to each other, making it look like one is WAY bigger than the other when it's really like a millimeter. Sheeze
HTC is where it's at. The factor that's gonna make me decide is more on the screen though, if HTC won't throw an AMOLED in their phones again then it's a safe bet I'm gonna migrate over to a Nokia with WP7 if Verizon has any on hand at the time. I'm a Graphic Designer so I'm really really REALLY nitpicky about my screens and their contrasts... I figure that the one thing I do with the phone the most is look at it, so I want the best thing to look at. The Inc's non-existent blacks have me hooked, and TouchWiz on the Samsungs... yeah I'll take Metro over that any day lol
I doubt Samsung is going to be parting with many of their SAMOLEDs, they need them for their own devices. I'd be surprised to see them on HTC again, although that would be sweet.
I don't know why touchwiz is such a huge deal to people, if you don't like it, throw ADW or launcherpro on there. Or a custom rom, being that Samsung doesn't lock their phones down, and from what I gather, are pretty easily rooted.
On a second thought, I'm gonna argue with the OP on the idea that all phones become old news in 6 months. And I think we're ALL gonna agree I'm right! Blackberrys become old news when the guy installs the battery and hands it to you.
