Htc evo: How do you use usb tethering? - EVO 4G General

I have tried to use my USB tethering on my PC but Im not getting an internet connection.. Could someone please inform me on how to correctly use USB Tethering

There was a app called USB tethering that I think was made by the same team that made the wireless tether app. I tried it last year and it worked on the evo.

It depends. If you're using a ROM that has the USB tethering unlocked, you should be able to just plug into your computer, then when the prompt on your phone pops up, select usb tethering. Wait 1-3 minutes, and it should have a connection. That works fine for me, and I just tried againr ight now. If you're not using a rom that has usb tethering unlocked, there is an app called PDAnet, that works great for tethering. It has a trial period, then after the trial period it only lets you on non secure sites, so you'd need to upgrade to the 'pro version'. There is also an app called EasyTether, that I believe is free and also works great for tethering.

EasyTether does work well, but the free app won't let you go to https pages, so you won't be able to, say, check a gmail account with it. You can upgrade to the pro version to see those pages, though it'll cost you 10 clams.

Wired Tethering

Does anyone have a 100% working solution, other then using PDANET?
I want something that feels stock, coming from windows mobile where stealth tethering was so easy
I don't get it? If by wired tethering you mean...plug into USB with USB cable, doesn't the EVO have HTC SYNC?
When you plug your phone into the computer via USB cable, you should get the drop-down menu with 4 options. One of them should be "INTERNET SHARING" which is the direct sharing of your 3G/4G connection with your phone.
I haven't received my phone yet, but on the HTC Desire (which runs Sense 2.1 just like the EVO) this option is available

Normally most folks get an error 67 when attempting to run Mobile Network Sharing, unless they have a specific PRL on their phone that allows it.
You can do it for free using "Easy Tether" from the market. Eventually it will work though, just be patient

So you mean to tell me that right out of the box the EVO cannot share the internet connection without the correct add-on from Sprint?
I guess that's one of the benefits of unlocked phones!

Correct, out of the box, unless you have the $30 add on, you can't tether for free unless you use PDANet or EasyTether from the market.
However, the sky's the limit with a rooted phone

This is what I plan to do
Will have to look into EasyTether...still waiting for my phone though
I prefer Tetherbot. It creates a SOCKS5 proxy and as long as the app you are trying to use supports SOCKS proxy, it works great. If it doesn't, you can use it along with Proxifier (which costs a small fee) to make your PCs default connection route to a SOCKS proxy).
Oh, and it's free, and requires no software at ALL to be installed on the host machine.
But that requires more processing to be done on the phone.
Better to have a naked connection in the phone, and all the work done on the PC, right?

Why does that matter? You will be using the PC 99% of the time, not the phone, and the phone will be charging while you have it hooked up.

Can you give me some info on making this happen? Do you still have to load HTC Sense on the client? Or, are using another method?
I have a rooted phone running Damage Control ROM and want to do USB tethering. Would prefer not having to load software on client, but will if needed. I am using Windows 7 and Linux Mint.
My phone is fully rooted, and i still cant get it to tether stock
or without using a app

Is PDANet the best wired tethering option?

I used it today and it blocks HTTPS sites. Netflix, GMail. I don't remember this happening before (a couple weeks ago atleast).
I am running the Fresh 3.5 ROM. So I will look around to see if there was an app built in and I am just not seeing it.
Options
PDANET - Free Version does not allow HTTPS, Paid version does and is 23.95
Easy Tether - Free Version does not allow HTTPS, Paid version does and is 9.99
wifi tether is working great
I agree. But my desktop PC does not have a wireless card. I tried turning on internet connection sharing but I get some data call failure error 67 when I check the box. I am surprised that a wired tethering option was not included.
Try EasyTether from the market.
I checked out Easy tether and the free version does not allow HTTPS either. But 9.99 doesn't seem to bad. I'll wait to see if anyone posts a free, unrestriced version.
Thanks.
I prefer Easy Tether for 1 simple reason..once u set it up all you have to do is plug in the cable and you are online.
With PDANet you have to enable it on the phone everytime.

Easytether opens up https sites for me
easy tether
If you are rooted, wired tether is free and is now working perfectly.
Thread here

I am using the Easy Tether. Even though it says at the marketplace that HTTPS is not available on the free version it did work for me. So now I can check my GMail at work.

any tether app working with froyo 2.2 yet?

like 3 tethering apps none of them since to work after update, any info?
They all work on CyanogenMod. <3
tethering works fine on cm6.
easytether is working just fine for me with 2.2 Froyo
same here. And 'funny' enough - when connect USB to comp - my 4G disappear. I didn't have to use anything on 2.1 - just usb sharing . Now tried all 3 progams with no luck. Other usb options are fine. Never rooted.
Thanks

Thats because you are suppose to leave usb as charge only, not usb tethering.
You don't pay for usb tethering, so sprint makes your mobile connection go away when trying to use it. So, use something like easytether, but keep it selected as Charge Only with usb debugging on

Thanks. Connected as charge and works!
Interstingly it shows as local only but whatever, right?
Thanks again, good advice.

[Q] Is there any way to make the Sense USB tether free?

When you plug in the phone and it brings up the list, with share internet at the bottom. Is there any way to make that option free, or replace it within the menu with something that is free?
Yes, but it needs to be written into a custom ROM.
ya, I know that lots of custom roms have that option, but why not just use wireless tether? If you're still on stock rom, just go into the market and download it. It's free and works great.
Why not just use the once sprint bundles with the phone? The sprint mobile hotspot one.
Is there some disadvantage to that?
the mobile hotspot is unavailable in the same way usb tether is unavailabe. Sprint does not want you to use your phone for tethering without paying them an extra $30 a month.
Can't you use EasyTether from the market? Doesn't require root. Try the free version and if you like it you could buy the $10 version that allows https access. I have never used it but the description states it can do this without root probably because it is using USB so cannot work as a hotspot for multiple PCs at one time and you did state you cared about the USB tethering vs wireless.
I believe barnecle ? I think is the name, also allows usb.
Barnacle is for root as are all wireless tether apps..

Why USB tether?
I would like USB tether because most of the time when I don't have internet, I also don't have power. Why would I plug my phone into my computer, only to turn on the computer's wifi and turn on the phones wifi to make the connection?
If I can only have the 3g/4g radio going, and no wifi on either device, I get better battery life all around.
Here is what I use for USB tethering. It requires a little bit of setup (and adb), but does not require root, and is completely free. In my opinion it works much better than EasyTether or PDA Net

I use Ubuntu, so I can help with setup if anyone needs it. For OSX and Windows, you are on your own.

Other ways of getting WiFi tether without rooting? *One way found so far*

This is huge for me. Is there any other way of getting free unlimited wifi tether on this phone without rooting it first?
I have found a way to use WiFi tether, but you need a few things.
1. FoxFi/PDANet
2. Laptop
3. Micro-USB cable
4. Phone
There is a work around for Wi-Fi tether though using FoxFi/PDANet. It requires a laptop though. When you use USB mode, connect it to your laptop and then when you right click the pdanet icon again there's an option that say "WI-FI share". Click on that and then it'll give you an option to set up a router name and password. I don't know if only certain laptops are capable of this, but I have a Dell 15R and it works just fine. At least then I can connect to my tablet and old s4 that way.
Your phone will need to be connected to your laptop the whole time, but at least you'll be able to connect to multiple devices at the same time.

Going to have to wait and see if foxfi or another one works.
Ditto... Very important to me too. Subscribing to this thread!

There are tons of apps in the Play Store that claim to give you wireless tethering without root. Some of have worked in the past for me, but someone will need to test them once they get the device to know for sure.
I am a bit confused. Doesn't the phone come with a hotspot already that can be used? Someone clear my befuddled old fart brain for me?

If your off unlimited data tethering is included but for those of us still on grandfather unlimited plans we have to avoid the restrictions.
Gods I miss my unlimited data.
I tried 1 Click Tether and it's a no-go.
---------- Post added at 09:17 AM ---------- Previous post was at 09:14 AM ----------
FoxFi's a no-go for WiFi. I haven't tried their USB or Bluetooth modes as I need to get another device here to try it.
I tried 4-5 tethering apps without success. FoxFi, Barnacle, OpenGarden, and other non-root WiFi tether apps, none worked.

There's been a loophole sell month to get unlimited by upgrading to an iPhone. Mentioned on Mac rumors thread and slick deals numerous times.

I came off unlimited data to get the Turbo. I **STILL** do not have hotspot. The default mobile hotspot application says it's another $20 a month. FoxFi does not work on the Turbo. I may have to look into figuring out USB tethering as I am not going to both give up my unlimited plan plus have to pay more to tether.

If you are now on a share everything plan/more whatever and it isn't working take it into Verizon. You should have no problem with it.
Don't look for a work around just have them fix it.

USB tethering works on Foxfi. I use it on my turbo all the time. Just have to install the companion app on the laptop/computer.
Wish someone could try using easy tether or easy tether pro and seeing if the usb tethering works.
Also if anyone has had success in sharing their connection from a turbo to a tablet with Bluetooth. With an unlimited plan of course.

But then that means being physically connected, right (never tried it, but assuming its "usb" tethering a cable is reauired?
Oh, and subscribed...refuse to pay Verizon an additional $30/month for the very limited amount of hotspot I use especially when my average data is less than 20gb/month. The only reason I keep unlimited is some heavy months I use 35+gb's and unlimited is future proofed, share everything bs is most definitely not.
I can confirm FoxFi does work via bluetooth. If you're using the free version it limits you to either 30 minutes or 1 hour at a time but I believe the paid version is completely unlimited.
I've tried just about every tether app in the play store and I can't get any of them to work. I've tried USB, bluetooth, and wifi. I think my problem is on the computer side though. I'm running the brand new Mac OSX 10.10. Are you guys that have tether working using Windows? I think Windows is more easily supported with the tether applications.
I have gotten this to work via pdanet+ on a windows 10 preview computer via USB, I really can't wait for this thing to get unlocked.
There are work arounds to get easy tether pro version. I wish someone could just try it please...

Easy Tether pro works via USB and BT. I find BT on both, FoxFi and EasyTether to be about 10x slower than USB, nevertheless EasyTether's BT and USB speeds seem to be faster than FoxFi' (at least the upload using ET is 2x speed of FoxFi).
