Other ways of getting WiFi tether without rooting? *One way found so far* - Verizon Motorola Droid Turbo General

This is huge for me. Is there any other way of getting free unlimited wifi tether on this phone without rooting it first?
I have found a way to use WiFi tether, but you need a few things.
1. FoxFi/PDANet
2. Laptop
3. Micro-USB cable
4. Phone
There is a work around for Wi-Fi tether though using FoxFi/PDANet. It requires a laptop though. When you use USB mode, connect it to your laptop and then when you right click the pdanet icon again there's an option that say "WI-FI share". Click on that and then it'll give you an option to set up a router name and password. I don't know if only certain laptops are capable of this, but I have a Dell 15R and it works just fine. At least then I can connect to my tablet and old s4 that way.
Your phone will need to be connected to your laptop the whole time, but at least you'll be able to connect to multiple devices at the same time.

Going to have to wait and see if foxfi or another one works.

Ditto... Very important to me too. Subscribing to this thread!

There are tons of apps in the Play Store that claim to give you wireless tethering without root. Some of have worked in the past for me, but someone will need to test them once they get the device to know for sure.

I am a bit confused. Doesn't the phone come with a hotspot already that can be used? Someone clear my befuddled old fart brain for me?

If your off unlimited data tethering is included but for those of us still on grandfather unlimited plans we have to avoid the restrictions.

Gods I miss my unlimited data.

I tried 1 Click Tether and it's a no-go.

FoxFi's a no-go for WiFi. I haven't tried their USB or Bluetooth modes as I need to get another device here to try it.

I tried 4-5 tethering apps without success. FoxFi, Barnacle, OpenGarden, and other non-root WiFi tether apps, none worked.

There's been a loophole sell month to get unlimited by upgrading to an iPhone. Mentioned on Mac rumors thread and slick deals numerous times.

I came off unlimited data to get the Turbo. I **STILL** do not have hotspot. The default mobile hotspot application says it's another $20 a month. FoxFi does not work on the Turbo. I may have to look into figuring out USB tethering as I am not going to both give up my unlimited plan plus have to pay more to tether.

If you are now on a share everything plan/more whatever and it isn't working take it into Verizon. You should have no problem with it.
Don't look for a work around just have them fix it.

USB tethering works on Foxfi. I use it on my turbo all the time. Just have to install the companion app on the laptop/computer.

Wish someone could try using easy tether or easy tether pro and seeing if the usb tethering works.
Also if anyone has had success in sharing their connection from a turbo to a tablet with Bluetooth. With an unlimited plan of course.

But then that means being physically connected, right (never tried it, but assuming its "usb" tethering a cable is reauired?
Oh, and subscribed...refuse to pay Verizon an additional $30/month for the very limited amount of hotspot I use especially when my average data is less than 20gb/month. The only reason I keep unlimited is some heavy months I use 35+gb's and unlimited is future proofed, share everything bs is most definitely not.

I can confirm FoxFi does work via bluetooth. If you're using the free version it limits you to either 30 minutes or 1 hour at a time but I believe the paid version is completely unlimited.

I've tried just about every tether app in the play store and I can't get any of them to work. I've tried USB, bluetooth, and wifi. I think my problem is on the computer side though. I'm running the brand new Mac OSX 10.10. Are you guys that have tether working using Windows? I think Windows is more easily supported with the tether applications.

I have gotten this to work via pdanet+ on a windows 10 preview computer via USB, I really can't wait for this thing to get unlocked.

There are work arounds to get easy tether pro version. I wish someone could just try it please...

Easy Tether pro works via USB and BT. I find BT on both, FoxFi and EasyTether to be about 10x slower than USB, nevertheless EasyTether's BT and USB speeds seem to be faster than FoxFi' (at least the upload using ET is 2x speed of FoxFi).

Tethering

I have a G2 with Tmobile and use a lot of data on it. A tab would be much better and I'd like to pick up the wifi version of the Xoom. Now seeing as Verizon has tiered pricing for their mobile broadband/tablet data plans I'd be much better off tethering my G2 to the Xoom, but which methods would work? I tried using Barnacle as an experiment but with a bit of reading found out that devices that aren't ad-hoc wouldn't connect (my PSP and CR-48 notebook wouldn't work, and reading the wiki the PS3 doesn't either) which leaves USB tethering. I know you have to install additional software with PDAnet tethering, so would USB tethering be possible android to android?
The Wireless Tether app works fine between my rooted Droid X and my CR-48, so I imagine it would work with a Xoom as well.
It should work with Wireless Tether. I'm hoping for that, if not, bluetooth tethering should work. And if that doesn't work, I'll have to use Connectify on my laptop to create a wifi hotspot of my tethered data connection from my little Eris! Hopefully, that won't be the case though, it'd be burden when not at home.
Yea.. simply just download the Wifi-Tether app. It works with everything, if you're rooted of course.
Or just use 2.2's built in tethering ability. Works just as good ~.~
Thanks, for some reason I forgot about the built in tether/hotspot, I think because when I bought my G2 the rep tried to sell me tethering for $15 a month or something. The wifi tether and barnacle tether apps don't work but the built in one does.

Rooters: Wifi tether working?

Surprised I have not seen anything about this (used search tool for the forum and nothing came up).
Anyone try wifi tethering a device using the X Play?

yeah, go to
Settings, Sony Ericsson, Connectivity, Tethering & Portable Hotspot.
Sorry, I am not referring to the tethering that requires an extra data fee, but the wifi tethering that uses the current data plan and does not cost extra.
There are apps you can get that use when rooted with wifi tether and not the stock hotspot feature (that costs extra).

i dont understand what you mean the wifi hotspot feature lets you use wifi to share your 3G/HSDPA connection with other devices, if you have a data plan it costs nothing unless you want to reverse tether, thats where you can share your home internet connection with your device using a pc/laptop

[Q] Tethering without root or tethering plan?

I have the nexus S. Does anyone know how to tether when you don't have the tethering plan? I've been looking everywhere.
thanks guys!
NS4g tethers out of the box. I would assume the reg NS would too.
Settings > Wireless & Networks > Tethering & portable hotspot > Check the box to turn it on.
well the thing is my carrier blocks it as they want you to pay 10 bucks a month for the tethering. But there's gotta be a way to allow tethering so that the carrier doesnt know.
there are programs on the market you can download. Easytether i believe... there's a free version but it doesn't work with any secure sites, so forget fb if you use the free one. i think they want 10 bucks for the unrestricted app.
But yes there are options
still doesnt work. there needs to be some settings changed so that I can tether

There are a hundred posts on here about it... but yours is the first I've seen of a carrier blocking it. Which carrier? I find it hard to believe, no offense.
Just as an aside, how do you actually surf the internet after enabling tethering in the phone settings? Just connect the phone to the computer via usb?

Connect the phone via the USB card and put the phone in tether mode.. (Settings/Wireless and Networks/Tethering .../ USB Tethering) The option isn't available until the phone is connected.
The phone will be recognized as a network device and may require network device discovery. It depends on your system and what you have had previously installed. I use tethering from time to time and have never needed to pay extra for it.
Hope this helps..

[Q] HELP! is there anyway to avoid mobile hot spot charge?

Hi,everyone,I need some advises here.
I used my laptop browsing via mobile hotspot 2 days ago, today I received a sms from tmobile asks me to add $15 hotspot program. My laptop can't loading pages anymore, only thing appear on the screen is warning message from tmobile, says I must have mobile hotspot service added in order to use it. I don't wanna pay extra $15 for just using hotspot. Btw,I have 2g data plan already. Is there anyway we could go around it to use hotspot without being caught. Or paying it is only option?
Are you rooted? If you are, Google wireless tether apk, download it, install it and use that instead of the hot spot that comes with the device. Or you can switch to a different custom rom. Those 2 options usually do the trick.
If you're not rooted, then there's nothing you can do but to pay the fees.

Thank you for help!
my phone is rooted, and i did try several wifi tethering app to bypass tmobile, it actually worked.
Barnacle Wifi Tether and another app named Wifi Tether doesn't work in my phone, but one app named Wireless Tether works flawlessly.
Moreover, I have to delete firefox in my laptop and install other version in order to get rid of T-mobile cookies, otherwise tmobile warning page will stay there forever.
Thank you again!

FoxFi Wireless Tether

Has anyone tried using FoxFi for wireless tethering on the Turbo 2? I'm considering getting the phone since I can do so and keep my unlimited data, but I rely on the mobile hotspot for my Internet at home. I know I can switch between my current rooted S4 and the Turbo 2, but really rather be able to use the paid version of FoxFi on the until root is achieved. I've tried the free version of FoxFi and it works fine, it just has a 500 MB limit per use before it disconnects. I like the look of the Turbo 2 and think it'd be a great phone to have. Any information that can be provided would be helpful. Thanks in advance. Oh, and for those who've every used a recent Samsung phone and miss the dual window thing, there's a cool app in the store called SideControl that provides dual window function with the use of another app called xHaloFloatingWindow you can either find in the XDA forums or download through the Xposed app.
It won't work
OP. You're saying that FoxFi works on your non-rooted, completely stock Lollipop Turbo 2? What firmware version are you on?
I loveD using the app in the past, but ever since KitKat it has been blocked on Motorola phones as far as I know. Would be awfully nice if it was usable again.
I don't have the phone, I was just considering it.
You can use USB tether and then from the computer in pdanet there's an option for WiFi tether where you can make your own WiFi name and password. It worked on the original Turbo, but sometimes it would have issues connecting to other devices. I tried it on the turbo 2, but I think there was an issue with it working.
The was my old post in the OG Turbo section
