Some of you are morons.... - Xoom General

I say this as someone who has great experience with multiple operating systems from windows 3.1 on, Mac, Linux, and stuff even older.
A heck of alot of the complaints I see belong in the realm of, "It doesn't make toast", well guess what it's not a toaster.
1. It doesn't run my favorite APP from my cell phone.
It's not a effing cell phone, when I switched from windows 3.1 to windows 98, guess what, some of the programs I had didn't run any more, that didn't mean that windows 98 was bad, just that the program was not designed with that operating system in mind and it took a while for the programmers to catch up.
2. It's not a PC.
Ya and guess what, it's not a toaster or a effing laptop, nor a fridgerator. If you are trying to run an application such as RDP that was built for a PC interface with a mouse and keyboard, guess what, it is probably going to be more difficult to use, you could buy a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse to make it easier, but then it's not a tablet anymore, it's an effing 10.1 inch screen with a keyboard and mouse (ass monkey).
3. It's not perfect, or It doesn't come with flash, or the SD card is not enabled.
Holy ef, you knew when you bought the dammed thing that it was a new device and new operating system, did Microsoft ever get it right on the first try, did apple (please somebody argue that and I will be forced to bring up the first Mac crap operating system problems and iPhone 4).
4. Wait there are no tablet apps.
Do you remmber the Ipad release, they also had very little actual tablet apps, but they also had some of the iPhone apps that worked and people were willing to wait on the tablet apps to surface, guess what, we live in the same reality, not effing wizard of Oz land, although I do think you've been tripping among the poppies a little too much.
5. Hey, wait a sec I saw a post you made that said some bad things.
No ass monkey, I pointed out some problems I personal had using the device to 10 tenths of its ability, and I said that and mentioned that I fully expected most of the problems to be fixed with software updates, which I AM WILLING TO WAIT FOR! because I DID NOT EXPECT PERFECTION!
6. Well I expect perfecton,.
Well great then, as a video I once saw said (internet help desk), go buy an effing apple, it's a computer made for morons, I mean daddy's. They lock you into their hardware, their software, and their apps, guess what, eventally, more apps will be available for the more open system, has to be that way, and you will be stuck in the prison that is apple, don't drop the soap.
That is all.

Jesus Christ, another sane one on this forum.
I must say I completely agree.
To the rest, you realize the negativity from your posts are driving away developers from this device don't you? They don't want to be mired with insipid, childish comments.
There ARE workaround for everything, and if there aren't its our job to come up with it. Case in point-> Google Voice guy that did the titanium backup-good on you man.

I think its the price that is driving away developers.
And there are valid criticisms of the device just like any device. That is all.

BTW your point about RDP... it's really not bad if you dont have a mouse provided you don't expect the freakin world out of it. Getting into quickbooks is great from it, save my file as a PDF to my intranet and then pull it up from the tablet browser and e-mail it to the customer

and this justifies all the Xoom shortcomings how?
the fact is that while what you mentioned is partly true, a device that cost on excess of $800 should not be half-baked. there some issues with the xoom as there were some issues with the ipad however, for a device that was suppose to dethrone the ipad it has fallen way short.

ROFL Funny Stuff!

My account is old, but I lurk more than post (this'll be my 5th since creating the account in Dec 2007.) I haven't been reading here much lately because I got my N1 decked out and set up how i want it many moons ago. ROM Manager spoonfeeds me my CM RCs and stables and I go about my bidness, so I haven't been reading posts around here in several moons.
But I recently became a happy little Xoom owner so I've been dropping by for answers and tips over the weekend. And I've been a little concerned with the quality of the traffic in the Xoom section. As if mainstreamy publications' websites have been sending people here. Or maybe even links somewhere on AOL pointing to these forums.
Too bad the Xoom launch wasn't as low key as the N1 launch was. Too much mainstream media attention and twitter giveways brings in the unwashed masses.
So I was very relieved to see this aptly ranting post. The post and supportive responses have reassured me that the inmates have not actually taken over the asylum. It's good to see there are still people helping each other do stuff with their devices and that the complaining and trolling from fans of other OSes are indeed exceptions, not the norm.
so... yeah.

Well said. I have noticed the downward spiral on the xoom boards as well. With that being said, everyone needs to take a deep breath, understand that we all knew about what was going to be available at launch. Even before the hardware was released, I saw a difference in posts on these boards. Look, if you're unhappy with your purchase, them take it back... too easy. This board isn't for complaining about the xoom, that's the official motorola boards, so go there and talk to people who might care if you return it.
I am very impressed with my xoom, and cannot wait for it to mature beyond its current form.

Once some of the hype and crap dies down, all the trolls will leave too, and it will be just like any other device board. Just give it a little time for people to get the devices and post real things on these boards.
Maybe eventually it will move away from "omg I Love/Hate my Xoom" and "Xoom vs. iPad, Fight!" threads.

Ha! Speak for yourself as you certainly don't speak for me. I don't need someone to explain it for me so does that make you the moron?

The main reason devs are staying away is that asop code from google hasn't been released yet.
We need to keep the pressure up on them moto and google or we'll be waiting 6 months or more for these fixes, like we had to wait for flash to drop with are og droids.
I'm still waiting for gingerbread to drop on my droid 2. I'll probably won't see it before I buy a new phone.
The squeaky wheel gets greased. Silent patience gets ignored. That's just the way the world works.
Just look at the healthcare debate. More attention was paid to hysterical teabaggers than to reasoned argument to the point where real healthcare reform was nearly totally neutered.
Had the og droid release been as bungled as the xoom, moto would be bankupt by now, and iOS would be the number one smartphone OS.
Google and Motorola got to get their asses in gear, before all this bad word of mouth kills high-end android tablet sales for the near future, and all that's left of the android tablet market is rooted nooks, and low end shoddy chinese tablets.

Google does that often... When the Nexus 1 came out, they gave out a couple thousand as I recall...
And, the flood of tablets are coming. The app builders will build as soon as possible so they can be the first available. The developers know android is an extremely viable market. there is a great future ahead on the big screen... Give a couple months. Even the venerable iplate had many growing pains when first released but most people forget that.

Well said! I don't get these people its like they think something else is miles ahead of Xoom. There isn't! the Ipad is the Ipad and I am not going to get into comparing the two. Yea the Xoom is expensive, yes it's cutting edge so it's not as polished. The Xoom is great hardware it's tough for anyone to say it's not wicked fast, the battery life is good, the screen has the highest resolution of ANY tablet. It's only going to get better once the software matures a little.
They all claim they are going to return it, what are they going to get after they return it thats better? Are they just feeling a little remorse because they really couldn't afford it to begin with? You have to pay to play, the "best" computer equipment is always at a premium.
I am tickled pink with mine, and sure when someone else comes out with a better tablet (they will) I will want that one but for now I am loving being on the cutting edge and being there at the start even if it does cost me.

iPad Rom

i know people here probaly hate apple but im ready to hear about some new projects...so is there a way to port apples ipad rom on the Tab? Has it been tried?
One day ill contribute my knowledge to the site just still learning now but doing good so far thanks guys.
btw: i love android
There are a million reasons why this would never ever work, so I wouldn't put too much thought into wanting it.
havent put much thought into it just sitting in iraq at work so random ideas for when i get done here lol
I'm trying not to be condescending, but it's still obvious to me that you haven't taken the 15-20 minutes to google the iPad and learn a bit about it, such as the fact that it's the same hardware as an iPhone, such as the fact that the software image is VERY proprietary and inflexible... like the iPhone, it's a great product for people who have no interest in a totally-customizable interface, and don't mind having to pay a few bucks a pop for every application they buy from a required application market source. If that's you, then just buy an iPad. I've played with them and they are great devices, if not as robust as an Android-based tablet is.
Unfortunately, Steve Jobs finds 7" tablets to be beneath him, so that's another limitation with an Apple tablet. And another reason why I'm interested in the GT.
And another reason why I find Jobs' sense of righteousness beneath me
As mentioned in the previous posts ios is a bit too locked down to one piece of hardware.
Android is rolling up quickly to ios. ios has some nice features like the hardware accelerated gui, but honeycomb may bring that for us too.
Android and its future developments are set to be the os of choice i think, they definately will be for those that want to tinker with things. Jobs would never allow that.

like i said above not much thought just sitting in iraq brain storming thanks for replys though
It is about as easy as installing android on your microwave.
thenewak: This doesn't qualify as brainstorming. You are asking questions to which the answers are available with a simple google query. Not quite sure why you keep mentioning Iraq. Sorry to hear you are over in Iraq, but don't count on iOS on Samsung Tab happening any time soon.

I must ask why would you even want to do this? I have both ipad and galaxy tab and have not used my ipad since I got the tab..Ipad is way too simple and basic.you can't do any thing with it...I just wish they would bring pokerist to android.

No sense in ruining the Tab by putting iPoop on it.
Now its possible to dual boot iphones with android. Some chinese can be flash with WinCE or android. You can also put ubuntu or linux mint on you sdcard and boot it but there is very little driver support.
The problem is that the kernel/system objects on apple os is specifically for ipad unless someone wants to compiles and hack drivers.
It'd be funny to see though.
Perhaps running ios through an emu to provide the expected hardware. Probably need 2gb on the Android to emu a 1gb (maybe 512gb) ios device.
But for giggles? Sure, why not! Probably more viable to emulate an ipad without phone connection than an iphone with.
It's just digging in and getting the techy info. Can see why it'd be far easier to go the other way, with the amount of documentation/hackability of Android.
Do iPads have VNC servers on them? Might be a quick and fun hack to fool peeps that you've got it working!
Ill stick to WHY lol its just wrong.

Actually I think there is one big reason: lack of certain apps in android. I think there are many apps right now only available for iOS but not (probably never will) available in android. May be directly booting iOS is not possible, and running directly iPad app in Tab is not practical due to lower resolution, but how about iPhone app running inside an "emulator"?
I don't know, but I know there is emulator for the Garnet Palm OS inside wm5/6. It would be great to have iOS emulator or layer running on top of Android. Yes, I know I am dreaming.
Oh BTW, I am having the same case as you. Once having the tab, I have never brought my iPad outside home anymore.

Now yes this would be awesomely funny to see, but to be honest I think an iphone/ipad/ipod touch emulator for android might be easier(maybe, because I am not a dev so I am not sure.)
I just got an iPad for Christmas and i must say it is freakin cool. I have an android phone and have used many android tablets including the android powered Nook that I got for my wife this christmas. Although I am not much of an apple person, I must say that the iPad stability and response just outdoes most tablets I have played around with. At the same time though, it would be great to have widgets on my iPad screen. If this thing could run android (as snappy as it runs the iOS), it would be the perfect combo of os and hardware. Save for no camera and some other small details.
Impossible
It's not so much a hardware issue (as you may have noticed, iphones can run android perfectly fine) but it can't be done as ios is closed source so you have to buy the ipad (and then what's the point?)
Maybe back in Dec 2010 there is no prove iPad can run Android?
That is such a long time ago....

does Apple market to idiots?

OK, so after about a week with my Xoom, i've been plagued with the question, "is that an I pad?" When I pronounce that it is definately not an I pad they ask me what it is. So I go on to explain the specs, both that of the I pad 1 & 2 and of my Xoom, I don't think one person that asked me understood a word of what I was saying. Nearly all of them ended up saying "so they are the same thing." I'm sure most of you can understand my frustration. So I end up resolving by kindly saying, yes they are both tablet computers and in that fact alone they are similar.
This leads me to believe that Apple sells most of their devices to people that look at the xoom and the ipad, see the price, and buy the I pad because its cheaper. Or maybe its just because ios is pretty much fool proof.
This is what worries me, are we becoming the minority? The small group of us that understand openness and what is worth a buck.
I understand the I pad itself is an amazing piece of equipment, but what the people I talk to don't understand is it is built on phone os. If they took ios out of the iPhone and stuck it in a macbook, I bet some people would still buy it, and not only that, I bet they would come online and rant about how amazing it is.
Honestly, is that really a question that needs asking? Apple peeps used to say "Our hardware is so superior to a PC... now it IS a PC.... then they said software is king... and they go and install windows on their mac also... For the last few years, Mac gets hacked the quickest at the conventions... most Mac people I ask don't run antivirus since they think their Mac is virus etc proof...
Mac / ios are for people who don't have time to learn the intricacies of a superior product or better way to do things.
You sir are spot on!
I don't think people like that should have a choice between tablets. To me it sounds like they should stay with the silly little closed source Apple products. It is a much safer and wiser choice for them. An open source OS like Android is no place for someone who thinks that a Xoom and an iPad are the same exact product. It's really funny though because this happens to me a lot so I can relate. Me being a tech expert, I run into this thing a lot.
And in my opinion, us computer techies are actually becoming more and more uncommon. The common person has no idea that you can even root/jailbreak a device, in fact... the less you know, the better off they are. Ofcourse that is just an example, but a good one indeed. It's pretty bad that most of the world relies on such things as iTunes because they cannot figure out how to drag and drop music onto an mp3 player. It's really messed up that people are not tech saavy enough to do the simplest things or understand basic tech knowledge, but hey... that's where us computer guys come in. We show up to save the day, and make all the money. +1 for all the techno nerds out there!
Android user for life!
They don't market to "idiots" per se, but they market to the general consumer products that "just work", with no extra setup or maintenance required. This is why they have prospered with 95% of the general consumer that buys these products.
Its easy for us at XDA to say that the iPad has its shortcomings, but to the random person who just wants it to work and doesn't want to tinker and mess with it the iPad/iPhone/iPod are perfect for them.
I love android and love tweaking/messing with it, but my girlfriend just wants to turn on her iPhone (or her computer, a Mac Mini, for that matter) and have everything work easily, no questions asked. Know what I mean? I wish I could recommend Android to more people, but unfortunately I really can't given the minimum level of aptitude to really take advantage of it.
They don't market to idiots. They market to people who want things simple and polished. And I wouldn't be so quick to shrug off the closed ecosystem until Android gets a:
Music store
Video store
Video rental
Netflix
Wide swath of high quality games
Android has yet to prove that an open ecosystem can bring in major developers and content providers. I hope this changes in the near future. Until then its clearly a better choice for 95% of the population to just go the Apple iPad route.
I totally get the "it just works" hypothesis... Until it just doesn't work. Want to see some serious joe and jen sixpack RAGE? Go to an apple store and watch them take in their broken macbook. Want to see some real android nerd RAGE? You won't. They fix it themselves or swap it out for one that does.

LOL. I dont understand the animosity towards Apple. They have created an amazing ecosystem around their mobile offerings. They make EXTREMELY high quality hardware throughout their entire lineup, to the point where no other OEM comes even close to matching them. They demand a premium for their products in more cases (somehow the Xoom is the one demanding the premium now), because of the quality of their devices and their software.
As for your "rage" comment, i doubt it. Apple offers a one year warranty on their macbook where you can walk into the Apple store and hand it to them and they will either fix it on the spot or send it to be repaired. No other OEM does it this hassle free. Also they sell Applecare which most "idiots" as you describe them probably would have purchased, extending the warranty to 2-3 years. This covers everything. Also, these idiots, if they have a question with a program or how to get their new ipod to work with their macbook, can just take it all to the store and someone will talk them through it nice and slow.
When someone asks me if my Nexus is the same as an iPhone I ask them "is a Mustang the same thing as a Camaro?" They are the same class of car (or phone) but are different brands and do things a little differently then one another.
I called them average joe and jen sixpack. Never called them idiots. Please, show me the error of my way and aide me on the road to recovery by quoting where I said they are idiots.
Apple is a small niche computer company. Their mobile/mp3 side is what is profitible. Honestly, they would have been bankrupt in the 90s if they had not given all those computers to schools in the 80s. Great strategy.
As for computers breaking, generally most break in the first month or so after they have a true burn-in or else they last for a long time. The year replacement thing is nice, but not really a selling point to me... Hell, even BB does this.

My good sir,
You are right, please allow me to rephrase this. Does Apple market to the ignorant population? Defined in this way:
Ignorant: unaware because of a lack of relevant information or knowledge; "he was completely ignorant of the circumstances"
Which really i know is a sold answer. But my points being that they market to the people that are unaware that buying from them, because they are stupid proof products, is allowingApple to do whatever they want. I don't have a problem with their products or most of their bussinesss strategy, but more and more they are straight starting to piss me off. And what bothers me are these idiots walking around acting like everything's not changing in big company's favor. You think Apple has created an amazing ecosystem cause you can turn on your iPhone and get your movies and your music and whatever. But they are destroying the ecosystem that should be between apple and the developers using their system. They are greedy, and the ignorant people they are generating all all this bull**** to go on.
I am not here to offend apple buyers, I have a jsilbroken iPhone and its awesome.
I am here however to discuss the fact that Apple is creating a land full of people that are introduced to idiot proof technology and banks off them.

People are willing to trade a lack of choice and openness for an ecosystem that just works and is really nearly flawlessly executed. They are willing to give up being able to flash roms for a device that has a couple thousand quality games, the ability to buy music from itunes, rent movies from itunes, watch netflix and have every app under the sun made for them first. If Apple oversteps their bounds, like they seem to be doing with the 30% subscription thing, people will abandon their platform. Until they do that, frankly they simply have the better ecosystem/devices until Android can make up some of that functionality differential.

Reluctant Return

My xformer tablet has a speaker problem. The RIGHT hand speaker is just intermittent.
Damn.
I hope my retail has some newer stock. I am tempted to go to the iPad 2. Love the Asus, but not being able to get hold of a dock, there has been very little to differentiate between my wifes ipad 1.
JJ
Its all up to you. I've had no problem with my tf and it's the first gen if you want an ipad get one like every other person who thinks they are good when the tf can do the same thing Plus more for 200 less

Not sure where you live, but the Fry's here in Woodland Hills, California has a boat load of docks, I know because I just bought mine yesterday for $162.04, tax included. They are 'B60K" versions.
I had to send mine in because both speakers stopped working. I got it back with worse light bleed than before... And it cost me $20 to ship.
I hate the fact that it's a gamble to send a tablet in for repair, but it was the case for me.
With the trouble I've had with the 3.2 update and the dimmed screen bug when sharing stuff or opening links/files, I'm glad I have an iPad as a backup. My useful transformer is quickly becoming the source of all my frustration lately.

Your kidding right? How many gameloft games work with our Android devices? Depends on which device you have. I bought a few EA games for my phone and tablet and now neither work. Got a new Samsung phone, well you're out of luck because many apps won't work with it. How's netflix running? Right... it doesn't unless you hack your transformer....
At least with apple, you buy ANY app and it will work - regardless of what you have. When they say the ipad "just works", they weren't kidding. I have no hassles at all with my ipad 2. My transformer on the other hand force closes, randomly reboots, has battery drain issues, etc. And I'm not the only one! Quality control from ASUS has been dismal and you really can't deny that.
I love my Android phone and tablet, but I'm VERY impressed at what Apple has done and the quality of apps available for their devices - something that Android has years to catch up to.

If all you do is focus on the bad to worse parts of the tf than okay, it is a worthless piece of technology..!
But if you focus on the good points, the selling points like the dock then it's an awesome piece of technology. Apple products are being designed to be fool proof, something that android can't garantue because on android we experiment with different ideas. We're not limited to what apple wants us to do or wants us to make, we're free. We're allowed to customize our devices the way we want, and sure that will bring some fc's from time to time but hey? that's life!
I do aknowledge that the battery drain problem shouldn't have excisted and that it is a sloppy error in the device, but asus has been trying to fix it (I don't know if it has been fixed though..) while when I had an apple product they would just say, well just wait for the next Iphone, then it'll be fixed!
No apple, that is not how you treat your customers!
And no asus you shouldn't have released this product with a bit more testing.
But who cares? It is a great piece of technology and if you want to switch to apple I say go ahead, nobody will stop you.
It will be fool proof, it will work but with every positif thing there must be something negatif to come with it. And that is the restrictions you get from apple.
The random reboot problem has been a standard android issue for awhile now, I've seen it on my cappy too! the random fc's well.. just compare them to the ipad games when they freeze.. and the random shutdowns? well whenever your ipad stops working and freezes you need to push hella lots of buttons to reset it! Be happy android kills itself first ^^"
What I'm trying to say is,
Both platforms have their cons and pros and you need to be aware of both before buying. I'm sorry for your problems you're having with your tf and hope that if you do change to apple you won't experience them with your ipad. (my god I sound like a support centre -.-").
Don't flame me, Im just trying to reason in this thread ! ^^

Quite the opposite - the next release (ICS) is make or break. Fragmentation almost killed it before it got going...
. but don't get me wrong - It wasn't an accident that I got the Asus & Honeycomb - the transformer is the first device that ticks all boxes - PLUS has the nifty dock..
I'm just saying - that when apple released the ipad 1, they set the standard for screen quality, build quality, battery life etc etc and even 12-18 months down the road, other manufacturers are struggling to meet that - and the android eco system is similarly playing a little bit of catch up.e
Of course we may say, it's cheaper, it;s open, etc etc and those things are all great, but it means nothing if many of the devlices fall below a certain quality & usability standard that the market already set.

I can. Whilst I do have the battery drain issue, and my dock is away for RMA, I don't have any of those other issues, never had a FC, never had a reboot, don't have any build quality issues at all, and I don't have light-bleed. There is definitely a very small vocal minority making alot of noise about some very minor issues.

You need to get that Transformer up on the news! There are some users who have tested 3,4, 5 units and they all have QC issues - my lightbleed issue went from bad to really bad after sending it in for repair; my speakers totally died; other people report only of of their speakers working or uneven volume; lots of reports of "creaking"; some users have bezels on their units that don't even look finished from the factory; some users have broken power buttons; "early builds" of docks don't even work with the power save mode; users have reported the paint coming off their Transformers; etc., etc., I'm not saying that all units are bad, but I've had many tablets and this one is the only one with build quality issues. Even the $150, Coby tablet I had was much better built than the TF is; don't even get me started with comparing it to the ipad...
When people pay for a product, no matter how cheap or expensive, the product should not be defective. For most, build quality issues are defects.

Come on, most people these days know how many people and how much money both Microsoft and Apple spend on viral marketing, astro-turfing and keeping their Internet image spotless and ensuring their less than spectacular products always appear to have a loyal fanbase, which in turn builds a loyal fanbase (as nobody likes to be left out...).
Just look at the endless Windows Phone 7 posts about how wonderful it is, when anyone with half a brain knows it's a turd. It's like the Xbox 360 launch all over again... with a pre-built fanbase of employed astro-turfers.
Part of the problem of course is that this is so rife in the US, that Americans can't even see how they are being manipulated on such a large scale by companies like MS and Apple, with bottomless marketing budgets. You have to be an outsider looking in to be able to see that.
I am certainly not going to say that Android and the phones that go with it, are all wonderful and great things. I will say that as a platform, Android far exceeds what iOS brings to the table. Don't get me wrong, Apple makes a simple, easy to use product that works consistently. But there is so much you lose in that process. Lack of widgets, need to open an application to find out what notices it is sending you, rigid screen setup, need for a Mac or PC to update the OS (although I hear this may finally go away), silly applet management model (if you do an update it backs up the applets themselves to your desktop rather than just redownloading the latest version from the app store).
I haven't had any major issues with any of my Android devices that could be pointed back to the OS. I have had some hardware build issues and that goes to my choice to buy now rather than to wait for a well designed well built product. ASUS did a fair job with this but honestly I should have waited for the Thinkpad since I just feel that Lenovo works much harder at quality control especially for the Thinkpad brand. That being said, now that I have the ASUS (even though I still have a week to return it), I can't imagine giving it up for any other tablet.
So for me it was a matter of tradeoffs, I wanted Android because the tradeoffs favored it rather than iOS. But I have to give it to Apple on general hardware quality, this partially goes to there being no competition in their space though. If the iOS 5 device is late, only Apple knows it. There aren't 5 other vendors who will flood the market with iOS 5 devices.

My brother's been testing ios 5 (he's a developer) and from the sound of it, Android has a lot to be worried about. All of the major complaints will go away and some of the new features will crush Android (e.g. app data in ios 5 is backed up to the cloud, so reinstalling an app will give you the option to restore app data - no rooting, titanium backup nonsense needed). The notification system will actually be better than what android offers and you will no longer need a computer to setup/update an ios device. It won't allow users all the freedom that Android offers, but it will be stable and will not induce late-night headaches either
Of course, both os's offer different flavors of usability, but I have a feeling that ios 5 will make the ipad an untouchable force in the tablet world - that is until Android becomes STABLE and can offer 100,000+ tablet apps, but I don't see that happening for many years.
I'm a happy camper because I have both devices, so I don't have to be a fanboy of either - I use what works for the task at hand and both the Transformer and Ipad 2 offer their own strenghts depending on what you're doing at the moment.

Also, I don't really play games on Tablets...the current games are too "casual" for me and don't hold my attention.

I don't understand. You get a new iproduct and you transfer your apps - easy as pie. The advantage of having only "one" ipad is that you get stability and consistancy. This could be considered the biggest selling point. With Android, you get a new device and maybe it doesn't root easily - so you lose all you root-specific apps. Maybe half the games you get aren't compatible with your new device. I've had these problems with the android devices i have. It's very frustrating.
Tablet games on ios are AMAZING my friend - Dead space, GTA, Real Racing, Marble Madness, etc. You can go ultra casual or console-quality - There isn't one game on Android that I "miss" on ios. I basically stopped buying games for my Transformer, I purchase only apps or use free ones.

Easy way to get the Ipad UI on the Iconia (funny)

Hey guys I just found out about an easy way to get the ipad UI.
Takes a few minutes and just a few steps.
1. Get an apple logo and cover the Acer name on the back of your tab and fill all usb, hdmi and sd ports with super glue, because ipads get fustrated with to much ports, or apple will send you to jail and sue your ass for putting ios on another device. Then restart the device.
2. It might take a little longer than normal for your tab to start up because it thinks its and I pad now and is not used to having everything it does controlled and monitored.
3. Once it starts up, in the upper right corner of the home screen you will see a button called, "Apps", click it.
4. Waallaa, you now have the I pad UI.
This UI is great with its huge selection of fully customizable Wallpapers!
Hate notifications? Great you won't see those any more. There only for smart people who like some productivity in their life anyway.
Also like searching through useless apps to find the weather, time or simple email? Then you will love this ui.
This is still in its test stages but so far no bugs have been found!
Download here----> i Like my tab uncustomizable and owned by a communist company v1.0.zip
Haha I thought I'd get some humor in the forums.
Sent from my A500 using XDA Premium App
Ah yes, most amusing...
Oh, and it's "Voilà" by the way, not "Waallaa".
You forgot the final step!
Totally forgot the most vital step in this process:
- Sign up for as many tech related message boards as you can - then take it upon yourself to educate the world as to how superior your device is compared to any non-apple device. When people mention things like "ports" and "Working Adobe Flash Support" just put your fingers in your ears and make annoying sounds.
- If available in your area, hit up the local apple "I need a friend" bar, where you can find other people to talk about the superiority of anything Steve Jobs has ever done.
hummmmm
I am totally lost. Guess you gotta have a apple product to understand
giggles
just get the touchwiz and setup similar to iOS///

Lol I see what you did there
you know, you'd think that tech minded people would be logical. But that doesn't ever seem to be true.
I have an android phone and iconia tablet. But I don't feel the need to justify my purchase by constantly making up wild claims and trash talking things that aren't what I chose to buy.
Apple makes amazing machines. Anyone who tries to deny that is a short sited fool who just wants to epeen all around the internet to make themselves feel cool.
The only people who talk trash on apple products are the ones who've never used one for more than 30 seconds. So chill out, you just make yourself look like a fool by trash talking something you obviously are not knowledgeable about.
You know why apple locks things out? So your machine works seemlessly and perfectly every time you use it. So that there aren't conflicts between programs or hardware that require constant tweeking to work through, so you have a top quality piece of gear.
example. I have a custom pc I built myself (well several, but my main) is decently fast and constantly being upgraded. It currently has a 2.3 quad core AMD chip with 8 gig of ram. On anything other than gaming my 1.3 dual core, 2gb ram macbook pro leaves it in the dust every time. And I don't have to spend hours constantly working on it to get it to do that. Not once in 6 years have I had a single error, a single bad boot, a single virus, spyware, or even hiccup on the macbook.
So please keep in mind that you look like a tool to anyone who has used both pc and mac and judges a machine on it's reality instead of on the same misrepresenting pile of myths that PC-propagandists have been regurgitating for over a decade.
i like both
Ease of use and stabilty is apples strong suit.
I'm new to droid and have rooted a few devices and recently the a500.
I have experience building computers and am looking forward to all tech and software.
Can't wait for an omap5 tab with dual boot os or tri boot.
Imagine a500 with win8 and icecream.
Bring it. I like options and open source I choose root.

I don't think anyone else before you really need to chill out - you seem to be the only one really riled up about this post. Yes Apple has great hardware, no-one is denying that (apart from the iPad2 camera maybe), and yes we are all aware that Apple locks down their OSs to ensure a smooth experience.
Thing is, this is XDA, and the majority of people on here WANT to be able to tweak their machines to how they see fit. I'm one of those people and it's the main reason I don't have iDevices. If I don't like something I want to change its behaviour, and that's not always possible with Apple devices (at least without having to jailbreak).
Maybe the reason you're acting like a tool on here is because you need a reason to justify spending the extra dollars on your shiny Macbook pro. Yes it works for you, good for you. The minute you come on here calling us short "sited" (sic) fools just paints yourself as someone who likes to epeen around the internet to make themselves look cool and enlightened.
Get a sense of humour. Even the most stalwart of Apple users should be able to admit some of the shortcomings of their devices, as can users of other devices. Or maybe you suffer from the typical Stockholm Syndrome that seems to infect many iFans.

Wow.
You seem rather upset over a bit of sillyness. Of course apple makes an amazing product - modern phones/tablets are amazing.
So "chill out". You don't want to "look like a tool", right?

I've spent countless hours on iPhones, my fiancée owns one, and I have several friends that own them. I've jailbroken them and even taken one apart. I think the phone is a child's toy and would never want to own one. Your assertion has been invalidated by a single individual due to your poor choice of words.
My question is, and I genuinely would love an answer to this. Why are you so defensive about apple products? Are you a designer? If so, that would make sense, I would not want to read about people bashing something I devoted so much effort into. But if not, and again, I genuinely mean this, why are you so defensive?
HAHA nice. When I first saw the thread headline I was gonna slap whoever started the thread thinking it was for real. Very funny! Love the part about super gluing the ports shut.
i guess it's easy in comparison to make your os run smooth when there is no USB support, no ports, etc...
Basic = ios
I knew an apple fanboy would rant on this one, op hilarious howto though
Sent from my HTC Sensation 4G using Tapatalk
you know how some apple fans are
With the expense of apples tablets/phones - it's no wonder the fanboys get really defensive - no one wants to consider the idea that they overpaid for a device that, quite frankly, is lacking in the features department.
Sure - the IPad is impressive. But once you factor in the lack of ports, lack of adobe flash support, and the locked down nature of the OS - it's a hell of a lot less impressive.
Sure - the IPhone is impressive. But once you factor in the cost, lack of adobe flash support, and the locked down OS - you get the idea...
I would give you more points and arguments. But like usual your only "argument" if you can call it that is "you're a fanboy!!!!" because factual discussion is something you douches are unable to handle....as are every moron who likes to talk trash on apple products without having a clue what they're even talking about.
I choose to use pc for my gaming and android for my mobile devices because they fit what I want them for. But that doesn't mean apple sucks or all the other idiotic things you people say around here. In fact apple makes amazing software and hardware.
I'm only advocating not being a fool and if you're going to talk trash then know what the heck you're saying...which none of you do. It irritates me to no end when people think it makes their e-peen bigger to talk down anything that isn't what they have. It doesn't make you cool, or hip and ironic.
Everyone in the room who hasn't ever used an apple product for more than 15 seconds shouldn't be allowed to open their mouths as they're just talking out their arse to hear themselves speak....oh wait that doesn't leave anyone else here.

Way to go, dude. Not only did you refer to xda members as "Morons", but you seem to be pretty upset over this thread. The OP was making a silly joke about what is one of the primary advantages of the Acer Iconia Android tablet over the Apple IPad - why does this offend you so much, to the point where you are willing to make a post as rude as the one I just quoted?
Do I think you are taking things way too seriously? Yes, I do. Will I call you a "Moron" for expressing your opinion? No, I won't. However, I think you are getting a little upset over what is intended to be amusing.
If you would like to logically discuss the reasons many users feel the Acer Iconia to be a superior product (again, ports, cost, and flash support are my reasons why I find apple hardware to be useless) - that would be fun! If you are just going to hurl insults via the internet - I would recommend you head over to a forum full of die hard apple fans - you are much less likely to find anything that upsets you or causes you to type a post like the one you just did.
Can we please not have flame wars over nothing!
I have an iPhone and the Iconia Tab, and I find both equally good in their own place. When I purchased this tablet about a month back, I had to choose between iPad 2 and Iconia, and I went with Iconia just because of the reasons mentioned here countless times (the Flash support, full USB 2.0 port, cheaper and generally better hardware). However, before iPhone I was the proud owner of a Samsung Galaxy S, a device that blows iPhone 4 right out the window when it comes to sheer hardware. However, my life is more peaceful since I switched, mainly because I am not flashing ROMs every weekend, looking for better features and builds.
My point is simply this: both Apple and Android have their own merits and demerits. Apple's closed system delivers the easiest and frankly, most convenient user experience. Android, on the other hand, not only features better hardware (generally), but also allows more flexibility in terms of what you want to do with your device and how you want to treat it.
In the end, it all boils down to a user's own preference on how they want to use their device, and what for. No reason to get all worked up about it.
And oh, I'd think twice before calling anyone at XDA a 'moron'. The guys here are the finest you'll find anywhere, and they love what they do, making Android a more pleasant experience for all of us.
P.S. to the OP, hilarious! brilliant idea!

i noticed one thing about apple fanboys

ok guys lol dont really want this to become a rant but its pushing itself that way. anyone notice when u try to have a valid debate about features or capabilities with a apple fan boy it always goes like this,
appleboy: yeah but the ipads got things android cant do like .....video editing,
androidboy: the androids actually got that from stock plus a whole load of imaging apps that came with the tab, I dont have to buy extra software.
appleboy: yeah but ours is better! pinch to zoom!!112!! haha
(android waits patiently)
androidboy: thats your arguement? but in fact the android system will run the......appleboy blurts in: NO NO NO IOS IOS IOS NO NO I HAVE EMAIL TOO..funz >)
anyone ever notice how androids will have a calm actual debate, apple's just blurt insane immature crap that shows most of them dont know feck all about using a computer?
tried telling them about open-source......between the two of them they somehow worked out that the IPAD was the more advanced device then the a500., from these "reasons"
in the youtube app you can move your finger to change volume......really?!
apparently some ipad users think the fact its harder to fully unlock a ipad for development, so that must mean its a more advanced device.....?
you can use a usb cable to add accessories....
tried showing em i have a usb port no need to carry a cable, and i can use most windows accessories keyboard, mice, external hard-drive,etc etc but nope apparently adding 1 usb keyboard....is somehow better then adding a keyboard as well as mouse, exterhd,dvd-drive. etc etc....????
i tried telling them about the specs side by side, and how my android mobile "phone" not even my best device (the tab is)
1.has more processing power then the ipad,.
2.better camera front and back
3.other features are basically matching (gps bluetooth wifi,....etc)
4. more configurable
5. same ram
but mine was half the price of your tab and phone..
they just dont get it, im saying to him look mate if you went to pc world and had
1 computer that was complete rubbish low speed, low ram,. windows 95
costs £20000^^
1 computer that has 3ghz high speed quad-core , 4gb ram, windows 7, dvd drive, usb ports, bigger screen, fully outwards compatible "usb play n go keyboard mice, bluetooth, gps etc"
costs £750^^
what would you buy? lol its not a hard one is it, im trying to show, look ios could have been THE best pads and phones,,,,if apple didnt own them and you got the full bang in your buck, i mean if they had ipad with the spec's of an android with the price tag of an android and open source,. android probably would even have gotten as far as it has today but that's good old apple business techniques for ya eh?
to be honest what im trying to say is you can tell a hundred things that are very worth having to a apple fanboy and they will say the ipads better because,
A. YA ITZ GoT LiKe slide volume oN yuTUbe....SO dARRR iPaDZ bEtteR !
b. tHErs Must HAve APPPPP for ThAt And iTSR bETTer Dan URS even THou I neSER SEEN, heard, Or UUsed SuCH app. IOS IS KEWlz
can anyone actually tell me an advantage the ios has? like what things can it actually do we cant?
in fear of this becoming a hate thread im basically asking for the things that the ios does that android cannot.

Get more game developer support due to its much lower rate of app piracy.
Consistency in its UI across all its devices.
Consistency in its hardware making development somewhat easier in that the developers know exactly which devices will be supported and how well it will run -- see: the post in general of a guy complaining developers have seemingly abandoned tegra 2.
Not risking an app in the appstore spamming your notifications or doing other insanely annoying things.
A jailbreak and theming community that, while does allow piracy, also supports independent developers, fiscally, through official cydia repos.
Get the stupid "with friends" games long before Android does. How am I supposed to play matching with friends with my android friends!?!?
Have upteen thousand third party home appliances that support (the soon old) iOS docking port. My SONY surround sound system came with an iPhone dock, as did my Murano.
OS updates that rarely cause fragmentation. I don't know of any apps that will only run on IOS 5 and not 4, and after a upgrade, it's extremely rare to find an app that won't work on the new iOS natively. I've only ever run into it once, and that was with a very niche sound based game.
There. I've played devil's advocate for you. And done so from my CM10 Android tablet. And, of course, none of those were intended to spark an argument. I'm just articulating things that are more intelligent, I hope, rebuttals to your topic. Granted, there are many loaded adjectives in my statements, and things like "rarely" and "upteen thousand" are highly subjective.

nah thats all fair and well but open to debate it must be
i have no idea what "with friends" games are?
be honest though how many of those above really are good points?
updates that dont really improve your system, hardware that's cost is doubled.? and ol' fact of no singularity?
i-tunes? can you add a single track now? are do you still need to re-upload a whole playlist? i still cannot get me head around the fact you cant just download an mp3 and set it as a ringtone on the i-phone,.lol

i guess when it comes down t it there's pros and cons for both i mean for apple every device under 4.3.5 ios allows an exploit known as ssl MITM attack...plus the QuickTime pop ups that happen when an app wants to use gps and will crash the app most the time if you hit no are kind of annoying (not sure if that one is still there) But even the rooting/jail breaking part of it when an android user gains root he can flash new roms kernels gain su in terminal etc not really having to worry about malware apple on the other hand has a higher rate of malware on jailbrocken ipods.. last thing I'm going to say about apple is that there jail breaking methods exploit security holes that may also bee exploited for darker reasons, there was an example in the iphone pdf parser which allowed a document to execute code....
For android there are way higher rates of piracy unfortuently there's alot of cheapy tablets with almost no support the different kinds an sizes create huge compatabillity issues the OTA updates aren't always reliable or even where you live.....i guess that's all i have they both have pros and cons I'm just an android fanboy and can't stand apple products
cheers i hope this doesn't cause arguments just wanted to add some more info and try not to play favorites while debating

in no way causing arguments matey, im trying to approach the question without prejudiced, i am at heart an android, ive had an apple i had one of the gen1 i-phones, and the thing never stopped frezzing and rebooting, never had a signal, etc.
i know android can run terribly if not implemented properly by the developer, force closes wifi problems gps problems, but this is the USUAL cost when using a customization based open source system, when applied to that much diversity you would have to be stupid to think you wont run into errors. <--not directed at anyone, just generally.
example i have to calculators
one adds 2 numbers thats it,
the second has wifi, a 3ghz proc' 1 gb ram, hd video playback a camera and bluetooth and a projector on the back the maker also says you can make any application you want for YOUR device, its open for you to change what you want for how you like........im expecting some errors here n there. lol
the thing is if thats the view of point you arrive from decides if everyone having the same devices is either a good thing or a bad thing.......or should we say BAAAAAAAAAAA BAAAAAAAAAAAA BAAAAD thing lol
lets continue,
edit: wow this thread got 150 views over night? please guys participate but this is not a thread for ranting more of actually facing facts from both sides and submitting your input to what makes which os more functional / better performing etc etc and what features are more for you.
I think you are generalizing when it comes to this. I've met the worst fan boys when it comes to both android and apple. I actually recall this dude I knew jumping for joy when he found out Steve Jobs died...
Anyway I've used both, I used an iphone4 for about a year before switching back to android.
I feel that ios was way smoother (although now I'm using a galaxy s3, I can say android is on par with it) I miss the variety of apps that ios had to offer and android fan boys try to shoot back by saying android has more free apps but honestly, I'm willing to pay for apps if they're of quality.
I felt the music player was a tad bit better.. I've downloaded a game and for some reason all the audio files showed up on my music player on my DROID Pro(maybe it was something I did wrong?)
I actually felt like I got the most out of my iphone once I jail broke it. It was the little tweaks that I was able to do that really made the experience with ios a whole lot better. The sad thing about this though is that I had to jail break it just to have some features that were standard on Android.
But at the end of the day, like I said, it's the apps.. I use my phone for calls, text, music, and Internet. Basic features all smartphones include.. It's the apps, the games, utilities, the variety that ios offers in apps that I miss.
One more thing, I never understood why people hate apple products. They make solid products.. I guess people just need to pick a side.. You got Ford vs Chevy, imports vs domestics, windows vs mac os, android vs apple, ipod vs zune(lol) etc etc

Did any of you guys read this interview with Steve Wozniak?
Sorry, I can't post the link to the full interview (long time lurker, first time poster). Just google for 'Woz on Android'.
Basically he loves the iPhone for the design and loves Android for what it can do!
Below is an excerpt of that interview. For me that says it all!
But Woz says he still recommends the iPhone as the best choice for most users. “The people I recommend the iPhone 4S for are the ones who are already in the Mac world, because it’s so compatible, and people who are just scared of computers altogether and don’t want to use them. The iPhone is the least frightening thing. For that kind of person who is scared of complexity, well, here’s a phone that is simple to use and does what you need it to do,” he says.

those point are valid, i dont mind paying for an app as long as it works. but ive noticed a large amount of apps for ios that dont actually do as described. like telling you one thing and you get something else.
about apple and solid product, no, this is the thing most people will confuse about me personally ,.....the ipad and phone COULD have been the greatest device ever,,,,,if:
A.you actually got a product on par with the price your paying
B. You bought it, you own it, you do what u want with it. not apples way
C. You wasnt forced to use the brands own very poor software to upload even a simple ringtone, i seriously dont get that....,,, oh wait i do you have to pay....not just for music but pay apple to get that music,. since when was apple my personal certified music agent?....self injected by apple very sneaky
D. apple products have had many of they're fair share of design flaws, these have just been swept under the carpet though. what about the massive i-4..."yeah the 4rth version" design flaw when you had to stick a rubber bumper on the side to get reception, and yeah you had to buy that rubber bumper ,,,, even though its apple fault.
http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/24/some-iphone-4-models-see-signals-drop-to-0-when-held-left-handed/
NOW im not saying thats not a story for the android phones too but heres a small snippet about the htc one wifi problem and how htc went about fixing it for theyre valuable customers:
In addition, HTC is also urging affected users to their call customer support to see if their phone is one of the affected models. If HTC confirms that a user has a phone with the identified hardware flaw, they will issue a replacement device. <---- see the big differences?
other brands : buy a bad product from us we will fix or replace it at no cost you bought the device it should work....srry about that

the one thing that I've come across are all of the software companies in the music industry absolutely LOVE the ipad (as does every musician, producer, etc. LOVE and ADORE their iphone). When i show up to gigs, rehearsals, etc... i get tons of glances and weird faces at my android. most people have no idea that it's faster and more capable.. yada yada yada. (phone is a GNex running jb)
But, whether it be large VST firms like Spectrasonics, Native Instruments, Arturia, etc. etc, or even hints from the bigger guys like ableton, protools (avid), and logic, all have ipad apps to make the ipad "the next instrument". you see all the time on youtube videos of 'ipad bands' and all that crap. it's really stupid! lol.
There are things like actual synths on ios (arturia) to realtime hardware synth integration to add extras (like oscilators, filters, etc) to even Moog synths! (which is totally awesome!). There are software synth helpers and controllers too, whether they be third party or directly from the manufacturer (like Spectrasonic's Orb).
This is very frustrating though, with android there's almost nothing out there. the best i have so far is a few midi controller apps (like touch osc, that originated on ios) and jordan rudess' MorphWizz (which he apparently uses live, but it feels like a toy).
I'm annoyed that 1. the music world is going to this, making everything feel chincy and kinda cheep (adding to the 'there's an app for that!' ;-s), but 2. that there's NOTHING for Android!
If I'm wrong, and there's stuff out there... PLEASE let me know. I'm using touch osc live on my a500 to control ableton, but i would love more apps for it!
oh yeah, one more thing. i also have a macbook pro (17 inch mother of a screen). i purchased it because of this problem. yes there are many production and synth programs on windows... but, NO, they hardly ever work well and i found that stability was 50/50 live. Had to go apple. To be honest, was hesitant, but i've enjoyed it. And apple fan boys, it's not perfect, it's not God, and it does crash.... albeit not as much as my Dell lol.
great community for the good 'ol a500!
LMFAO talk about ios and theyre GREAT APPS?
how about this a $1000 app that does nothing but shows a picture of a gem and a sentance
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA I-APPS MY ASS

Really? Your gonna bring up an app that was released four years ago and that was pulled Immediately by Apple? Your a funny guy. You know it's bad when it's recommend to install some kind of anti virus software for your phone. I don't want to start arguing but the proof is in the pudding, ios has more apps, a wider selection and overall better apps, even if you have to pay for them.

those point are valid, i dont mind paying for an app as long as it works. but ive noticed a large amount of apps for ios that dont actually do as described. like telling you one thing and you get something else.
about apple and solid product, no, this is the thing most people will confuse about me personally ,.....the ipad and phone COULD have been the greatest device ever,,,,,if:

<---- see the big differences?
other brands : buy a bad product from us we will fix or replace it at no cost you bought the device it should work....srry about that
apple: you bought it from us , its doesnt work.......so pay more money just get what you should already and have payed for,.

I agree with the whole ring tone, buying a song off itunes is one thing but not being able to set it as a ring tone is just plain obsurd.. Who knows maybe they'll offer it as a feature in one of their updates ha ha ha ha.. I also don't like how finicky the iphone is when it comes to trying to play videos on it... With my galaxy s3 I just drag and drop and it plays pretty much any video format I have.
I thought both the iphone and ipad were priced decently. My galaxy s3 cost just as much as an iphone4.. I mean how much was a motorola xoom when it came out? Roughly the same amount as an ipad think.
I'm really not trying to argue, we can go back and forth all day, iphone had reception issues, a few of the nexus line of phones has screen issues, it happens.. Although people seem to be a bit more harsh when it's apple.. I remember I had an HTC evo, phone worked fine but the software had a bug.. there was a known android bug where I would click on a text but it would send me to a different contact, me unknowingly would shoot out the text and by the time I realized someone else had gotten the text... It was too late.. I had a lot of embarrassing moments because of this. I know apple had that one clock bug where it didn't update to daylights savings time... Everybody has problems..no company's is perfect... I don't know what I'm getting with this really, I'm a neutral guy. I use both os's, they both have their pros and cons... That's all I gotta say.

agreed, but as we've seen with Flipboard and every other popular ios app, is android support THAT much different? lol

i read somewhere that the reason why iOS had such great dj'ing and music apps is sound processing. nobody can deny ipods have the greatest sound, better than any portable music player. apple took that and added it to the pads and phones. dunno if it's a software or hardware thing, but it's there. with jellybean now out i thought that might change a bit but i have not seen anything about it yet.
btw some Apple fanboys that i know are actually happy that Google fixed the fragmentation and wrote the gpu code from scratch. as another user said in earlier post, the OSes are paired in performance now.
