Has ANYONE gotten the infamous update yet? - Surround General

I haven't found anyone with a Surround on AT&T that has gotten the update. If AT&T does to WP7 like they have continued to do with Android, it will be the last branded phone I ever buy from them.
God, I hate AT&T.

lol dude ... did you readed thread with update at all ? update was removed from ms site in 23 feb . due problems with samsung devices (c) captain oblivious

Appreciate your response, I guess. But they only removed it for Samsung phones, newb.
http://www.winrumors.com/microsoft-temporarily-disables-windows-phone-7-update-for-samsung-devices/
And regardless if they removed it or not for all phones, the question still stands:
DID ANYONE WITH AN HTC SURROUND RECEIVE THE UPDATE?
Why is this so difficult for you to understand? Jeesh...

I was under the impression that they only turned off the update for Samsung as well, according to Engadget.
I have yet to receive any update notification either for my Surround.
However, I'm not sure if ATT would have anything to do with this, because you should be able to just update the phone via Zune, bypassing any carrier influence, correct?

McHale looks like you born 1 min ago .. or you first time own PDA ..
1. update nature .. anyway .. will require carrier assistance .. will they support 1 year old devices ? more likely not
2. update was NOT intended for all devices .. they said that right from start . also no one said future updates will be for all devices as well .
3. as far as you may know chevron will be fixed in nodo ( future update ). and NO LONGER WILL UNLOCK PHONE. you will NOT be able jailbreak your phone .. i rly dunno why so many exclamations and despiration in update process at all .. since right after update you gonna FLood forum with = HOW COULD I FALLBACK INTO 7004 ??? QQ OMG BBQ
in the end of sentence you could clearly see main idea ... - update process will be via old way ( cooked roms ) wish you or not .
i just wish you luck in finding OUT FROM EMERALD DREAM . and begin monitor USEFUL things Like HARDSPL . since only them could extend device lifecicle

Wow, such hostility...
But in any case, after reading up on a few things, I'm going to clarify my previous statement.
Carriers can block the update, however, they can only block one update. So basically if ATT did in fact block this update from the Surround, they will have no choice in the matter when NoDo hits. That update will include this minor update plus that one.
Also to consider, it could just be a staggered update and it just hasn't made it to the surround yet.

there is no hostility or something personal . dude just in emerald dream ..
teoami
that problems nothing .. ms does not know themselfs some MAJOR things. they just keep silence about that
1. each MS product have limited lifecicle . updates which implement new major functionality counts as - SERVICE PACK HAVE DIFFERENT LIFE CICLE . and when RTM version does not suppurted SP still on support ( or Adaptaion Kit update if it is for mobile segment ) . will update policy cover that or updates limited bt family ? that part still unknown at all
in more easy words - updates under Os CURRENT STATE till new sp or what ?
2.

there is NEW problem unclasified by ms as well
they could postpone all updates if phone does not longer supported by manufactuter or carrier . HTC LIFECICLE for example 1 year . carrier phones could have 2 years as exeption ... how they will update things if they does not supported by manufacturer ?
ps .i just not in emerald dream about unlimited support .. i know all that gonna end in custom roms coz update will not gonna work or will wprk pretty limited time

HTC ! I'm pissed a litle !

Damn , I checking everyday, looking for official ROM update for my HD2 ( Poland )
This time ( this HTC phone ) I wont to try "normal" way to rom flash, without different 'home made' ROM'S
What a freaking policy the have ?
Fake announcement's , almost official rumours, giving rom update only for some country's - damn !
After my third HTC phone I sad Enough !
There's always something - sms issue or other issue, lack of something, no drivers, no compatibility ! damn !!! It's like fighting with the wind.
But...I'm still here with my new HD2 - I'm giving last chance to HTC, they have my ultimatum 78 hours to release official ROM update for Poland !
If not......well , I know where thay have office, and where's a nearest gas station
I think that almost everything is because current market - new mobile every week, new OS every 3 weeks, new..new...new, where's that time's when producers release only 1 phone in year, but relay improved ! and with 99% working and stable functions !
HSPL is your friend

I also said "This time I'll only use stock ROMs". I lasted 1 week before flashing a custom one again
Exactly ! I use it 1.5 week, and I will give HTC time till Friday 11:00 , then I will flash some unofficial ROM.
( and I will send email with picture of my butt to chief of HTC )

bwahahahahaha : -)
They don't read this forum so I doubt this 'threat' will even register with them - just flash a custom ROM and be done with it. They're better than stock anyway!
They have spy's here.... to read about every issue and then they can say that "it will be fixed"....someday, when they release 11 new pda's before end of the next month, of course with 6 different OS, on 3 different ROM's
They do read it. They said at MWC that they listen to forums and stuff to get feedback.
I feel your pain man, Eastern Europe seems to be ignored in regards to 1.66 update. I don't care about it that much, because its working fine, but i want an official rom with opera 10 full version and with pinch to zoom.

It has been almost one month without any support developement for any HTC device (last was Released 2010-01-28 for HTC Magic) so it is not HTC HD2 specific
And the reason is probably mobility trade fair season, so I guess they were working on new product to have something to show and here comes your "11 new pda's ..." complain
So basicaly you are right
Well, that's why we have this site and cooked ROMs... I definitely wouldn't have had all the HTC devices I've had (seen signature pic) if it wasn't there.
HTC do follow, with mixed feelings obviously as people here are for sure abusing their phones, but at the same time they buy them, thousands of them...
Their devices are great, and it's not really their fault if WM is flawed as it is. They've already done quite a bit to try and improve it, then well there's so much you can do... at the same time until now nothing had WM's versatility, diversity of apps while staying open, which is why we stick with it even with the drawbacks... even if android is now slowly overtaking.
HTC Give us HD2 1.66 rom update for Poland !!
Hey !!! Guys from HTC !!! I know that You reading this !
!!!! 21 hours left !!!!
I already had take picture of my hairy butt ! It's ready to send.
On last two hours I will be ready , with my finger on the mouse pointed to "send" button.
You do know that all ROM updates for the region will come via SunnySoft -
http://wwww.sunnysoft.com/htc/
?
I would hazard a guess that if it has not been released yet, that they are still working on the localisation?
I know about localisation form Sunnysoft, but it's not about language - I want official 1.66 rom for east Europe , I want them (HTC) to go to work and threat their clients like they should to. I want patch's for all leak's in HD2 rom, and I want suitcase filled with $$ and plane to country without extradition
so why don't you install HSPL and flash to ROM for your region?
But there is no difference between official and cooked ... why moan?
I have my HD2 from 2 week's from now, I know that sooner or later I will flash some cooked rom, I always do it with my previous HTC's, this time I though about giving HTC a chance to be "on time" with ROM update.
They have been, just not for you
What ROM do you have at the moment? Is it a vendor locked one? If so, it's them you should be venting at NOT HTC...
EDIT: Just checked their site and there's not even a 1.66 ROM. Think you should contact them directly as you'll get a quicker response than on here...
479.1
I'm waitig for 479.1 rom too.
Leo is my first HTC device, so i want to flash official way for the first time, obviously Still got some patiance...
afropolak, good luck on your mission, make sure to write feedback what HTC CEO thinks about your hairy one
Ok, time's up ! Right now somebody in HTC headquarters look at picture of my hairy butt and try to understand why ? Why somebody send it.
I flash Laurentis ROM yesterday, I must to say nice , but - few application that works well before, now crash every times ( mTollbox 0.3.0 ) but it's a other thread case.
I will still try to catch official ROM , because for my new bug-less rom I cant install semi-official Polish localization from SunnySoft.
Like I sad On the first post - DAMN..!!! THERE'S ALWAYS SOMETHING WRONG WIT WM DEVICES AND OS.
Yes, I know, I'm moaning again...

htc hd2 , still alive

HI . i am courious if anyone has any inside informaiton on the hd2 receiving more offical ROM updates . or have they already moved onto bigger and better things ?
Cheers
only time will tell us ,but i think no more updates soon

I hope we get no updates soon, because looking at other HTC devices, I think HD2 has got only 1 chance of a big update and it shouldn't be wasted as 6.5.3. They will definetely release an update and the support called it Windows Mobile 7. I hope we get the better version (WP7S) and not the crappy Windows Phone Classic.
I really don't care, I haven't had an official rom on my HD2 since the HSPL was released and that wasn't going to change any time soon.

but remember porting wp7 will be much more harder than porting wm6.5 roms ( no backword comptability ,which means drivers and applications used to operate the device will not be exist (camera ,bluetooth , wifi , radio ,and more ) like the problems happening in porting android to other phones the mentiond apps doesnot work
Sorry, I should have made my viewpoint clearer. From what I have seen and heard of WM7, I'm not that bothered about it anyway. It looks like a step backwards to me, albeit one with lots of eye candy for those that don't look beneath the surface. Microsoft have seen Apple succeed with that viewpoint and want a slice of the action.
I can upgrade to a new phone in 11 months time, I will be happy for my HD2 to have the various cooks of 6.5.x until then.

chevron unlock mess up official at&t updates?

I have a hd2/hd7 & decided to get a Samsung focus. I just read of pocketnow.com that Microsoft is saying all the people that did nodo un official will be stuck not able to update passed nodo. My question is can I unlock my focus & wait for the official at&t update without worrying about messing my phone up for updates?
it worked fine for me.
@Freddy2Fred what do you mean? My concern is if I unlock my focus when I get it & also install the re-unlock so when I update to nodo will it effect my future updates?
This is what the article says on pocketnow......
"Monday the ChevronWP7.Updater brought the ability to update Windows Phones to the latest build for all those who lost their patience in waiting for the update notification.
A lot has happened since then: the blog post of Chris Walsh no longer has a valid link to the ChevronWP7.Updater -- as in it was pulled! You might have a déjà-vu as the ChevronWP7 unlocker used to jailbreak smartphones was also pulled as the team was in talks with Redmond.
Apparently, Microsoft warns users related to the usage of the ChevronWP7.Updater as it allegedly will put an end to the smartphone's ability in receiving future updates. According to Redmond, re-flashing the device with an original stock ROM would be the only solution to revert from the situation created.
Since Windows Phone 7 stock ROMs aren't available officially the way we got used to them being on manufacturer's websites back in the days of Windows Mobile, you can either stick with NoDO forever or send it back to the factory? What do you think about such an alleged stance?"
Relax... The report doesn't say for sure. It states Microsoft hasn't tested the Chevron Updater and warns its a possibility. HTC phones that used the Chevron Updater reported receiving additional updates almost immediately through Zune for HTC firmware. Regardless, I'm sure the coders like Chevron team and XDA members will provide updates for our current hardware long after Microsoft and the Carriers stopped in order for us to buy new hardware...

There's an AT&T update? I haven't seen one thing from them and at this point I'd be surprised if I ever do so I wouldn't be too worried.
Relax
If you read the article you will see that "might" is used three times in the second paragraph of the quote and "possible" used in the third paragraph. As it was being published, many users who had updated through the updater were receiving Zune update notices and re-updating with no problems.
Thanks for the answers everyone. The only thing I want to do is unlock it, apply the un-relock so I can sideload when needed & have my custom ringtone/sms. I will still wait for the official update still because of this article so I don't have to update then re-update in a months time.
"Now that the ChevronWP7 Updater tool is out, letting you force NoDo onto the Windows Phone 7 handset of your choice, there's nothing else we're still waiting around for, right? Well, not quite. While this shortcut may get you copy-and-paste, there are still non-NoDo related updates coming down the pipeline. Chris Walsh, ChevronWP7 team member and creator of that update tool, has tweeted word that there's a Samsung Focus-specific update in the works, including some bug fixes.
Walsh implies that they'll be several bugs targeted, but the only one he singles out deals with Bluetooth support. We've seen reports of users running into garbled sound and volume swings with devices connected to the Focus, so this may be the fix Walsh mentions."
With this update supposed to land "really really soon", it's likely that AT&T could push it out at the same time it gets around to releasing NoDo for its users who have decided to wait for an official channel, almost certainly later this month. If you have a Focus and have been considering the universal update hack, you may want to hold off, as you're just going to have to revert it in order to install this bugfix update.
You know what this shows? It shows that if AT&T weren't sitting on their hands keeping silent then people wouldn't get so antsy to get the update. If they came out and said "we're testing it and you'll receive it within <blah-blah> amount of time," which wasn't the case, then people wouldn't have had to resort to finding ways of getting the update. As it stands, there may never be a day this year or any year that we'll see an update from AT&T.
There may be bug fixes being made by MS, but will AT&T release it? Not over their dead, greedy hands. They'd rather you buy a new phone than run the risk of having their support people actually do their jobs.
I really hope this stuff gets organized soon to where we get straight updates from Microsoft for each phone itself. Do yall think the focus will be the only one that will have expandable memory? That seems to been a worse idea lol I'm going to keep my focus with the memory it comes with. I really want to stick with wp7 but I hope its not a slap in the face lol
Revert????

There is no evidence anywhere that you will have to revert anything. Reading other threads and blogs, users in other countries are getting their full updates, including firmware fixes, after using the Chevron Updater to install the update. The new update installs just fine over the hacked update. Others are reporting getting just a firmware update. We really need to see how this plays out but no one knows what will happen and people who are receiving updates after using the hack are reporting positive results. It's amazing that they get the official update and can install it even though their phone is reporting 7390.

[Q] Future Updates?

Now that HTC Surround is a discountinued model, what chance do you think that we'll ever see updates from WP7 7.10.7720? Given that HTC and the orriginal carrier (in my case, Telus) control the relase of updates, why would they bother testing anyhting new on the Surround?
Are we stuck on 7720 for ever?
Don't think so. Regardless of the device status, Microsoft is still interested in providing a positive user experience and will do what's necessary to make sure relevant updates get pushed through. OEM firmware updates are also a possibility. Things like the dissapearing keyboard will get fixed.
While this is all speculation, all devices should continue to receive support/updates for at least 21-24 months from date of release, or the length of a typical (2 year) contract. At some point the hardware will not have the capability to support new features, but that's to be expected.
Let's hope you're right
the latest is 8779 but still couldnt find any free download on it so i just found 8773 which is the 2nd latest probably.

Bad updating experience with Samsung

Hello guys, how are you doing?
I just wanted to share with you my own opinion over how Samsung deals with updates to a Galaxy Note 10.1.
Actually, many users have reported software bugs in Galaxy Note 10.1 and Samsung confirmed many like the bug of clipboard. But the bad part is Samsung ignorance of bug fixing. It is good that we will receive 4.1.2 update with premium suite preinstalled, but it is bad that we did not receive a bug fixing package!
It has been several months since the launch of the Note 10.1 that many owners of the product started to get frustrated of the bugs. I cannot copy an article and save it as note in S Note app or share it in Facebook!
Besides, Samsung released JB 4.1.1 update to some regions, stopped then started releasing 4.1.2 in the time users still have the buggy 4.0.4 for many months in several countries, if not most! Even though 4.1.1 has stability issues, Samsung shall fix current bugs of 4.0.4 before caring to release a major 4.1.2, as this needs a quite long time by Samsung for a frustrating bug to remain!
Software is as important as hardware. I do not care for receiving a new major update with hundreds of new features, as we will receive it soon or later! But for me, a stable software with only two features is far far better than a buggy one with hundreds of cool features that I am unable to use!
Samsung used to release improvement packages and push them to their software update server for their products, but it is really strange why this is not the case for Note 10.1!

You write that you are still on N8000XXLGA.
Sorry man, but it is your fault if you chose not to update by flashing the newest firmware.
Thanks to Samsung, Samfirmware and XDA, you have this option.
Other big companies, for example Acer, LG, will not even give you this.
So why do you not update?

Agreed, I had to resort to manually flashing the German JB update to "fix" the PDF import problem on my Canadian N8010. I feel sorry for the average customer that bought the Note but doesn't know how (or even think) to flash a firmware.
This is why Samsung will remain a second-rate manufacturer of mobile devices: ineffective software QA and silly update rollout schedules.
Samsung is known for slow firmware updates, mostly due to the most customization of android in the world. Second-rate manufacturer? Not sure about that my friend. You are smart enough to Google Samsung.

Haha... so true... hehe... I like your humor...
The note isn't my first Android tablet, but it is the best that I've owned to date. My first Android tablet was an Archos 101. In addition to poor quality control that led to dead USB ports and speakers on multiple units while under warranty, the company's constant push of half-backed updates drove me and others away from that brand. You need to test code changes to make sure one "fix" doesn't break something else. Archos engineers didn't test updates thoroughly and rushed out updates that created additional issues. I quit updating that tablet. Thank goodness Samsung is more diligent. No OS is perfect and some of the things we might be unhappy with really are deliberate design features that Google incorporated into JB (or, in your case ICS). I would also suggest that you update to JB, you'll gain valuable features with the s-pen. At this point in time, I am happy with stock JB. I will probably root it soon (I wanted to use it on stock JB for a while before rooting). Eventually, I may flash one of the custom ROMs developed by the talented developers on this forum. The great thing about the popularity of Samsung products is that the popularity generates more developer interest, a big win for adventurous owners willing to root and flash.

Having to do all that is, to me, what is required from buying a second or third-rate product. I wouldn't buy a car, for example, and be happy to expect that I need to change the spark plugs or some nonsense when I bring it home.
I mess around with R/C cars and I have in the past bought crappy cars because I enjoy tinkering and making them better, but I don't want or expect to do that with a mass market product lol.

Nice analogy er, maybe not...... Thing is, no one is forcing you to update/upgrade/tinker. An update message pops up from time to time on the device and you click ok and it installs. That is as simple as it gets. That's NOT what we are talking about here though. We are talking about folks getting their flossy in a twizzie because a newer version of the OS is available and it hasn't been pushed to their device yet.
I have never seen anything written anywhere on the terms and conditions of any device I have bought that states I am entitled to get any upgrade to OR should expect to be updated to the latest software. In fact, iirc it says that on occasion an update may, yes MAY become available for the device and to either follow the onscreen instructions or visit (insert website here) for instructions on how to update.
Now to get back to the point, peeps EXPECT TO GET THE LATEST UPDATE, but they don't want to follow the instructions to do it. These instructions are usually made as simple as 1-2-3 so that even the technologically challenged can follow them. Turns out they ain't simple enough for some though and then the moaning and bleating begins, followed by the blaming. My device is stuffed, Samsung is rubbish, this cheese toastie is mouldy etc, but you never hear anyone saying, aargh fecked it up but it was my fault, I was born with two left brains or life is like a box of chocolates lieutenant Dan!
Sorry for such a long post. But I hope it helps clear things a tad

This post is an argument waiting to happen.
My tuppence, IF users don't have the capacity to download 1 program (Odin) and 1 file (the updated rom) then follow a simple set of instructions, put tab in download mode by pressing 2 buttons, connecting a charger cable to the device and the computer/lapto, run Odin, run the update, then they should be buying that fruit based logo device. You know, the one designed for numpties :silly:

Your advices are sick my friend. For me, I did flash many firmwares of other regions onto my devices. But in the same time, good may be overwhelmed by bad things. These 1-2-3 steps were sometimes helpful and other times disasterous! For example, I have flashed many firmwares before on my Galaxy S i9003, Galaxy S II i9100, and my latest Galaxy S III.
For unknown reason, my Galaxy S III got bricked and went into a boot loop. It was not a noticed hardware failure neither it was a corrupt Odin package, but for some reason, a hidden hardware failure has become obvious following the flash. Samsung has reported that the motherboard was completely damaged and that unofficial firmware flashing of different CSCs was the cause. It could be also a manufacturing error. Whatever it is, I was lucky that Samsung did not void my warranty as it was rooted at that time with the flash counter > 0.
Besides, I have more than five Samsung Galaxy devices in the house, and they look to me as their software geek!! Whenever an update is released, I cannot say always to them yes, and let me flash things to you!!!!
Besides, why am I supposed to flash the German one? For the learning hub that does not work in my country? Or for Music and Video hubs that are also forbidden in my Country?! And why does Samsung have all these software variability? Why does not they make a united software with custom configurations based on country; like Apple?! Apple used to release the update worldwide with blocking un-allowed features based on country chosen!
I love to update using OTA; AS SIMPLE AS THAT, apart from all the BLA BLA BLA you have said!!!
no one is forcing you to upgrade, after all it's your tablet and you can do whatever you want, i am still on ICS and plan to stay that way for a while because i feel personally it's stable for me and works, i don't really care about new features i will hardly use, best thing is to root and then you can decide if you want to upgrade your tablet at a later date or not, the option is still there with odin.
i too also prefer uk firmware because some features that are on the uk firmware won't specifically be on the german firmware, different regions different features.

Hehehe The biggest joke of all is that the UK version is INCLUDED into the German version. You just need to change csc and you have the UK firmware, not a firmware LIKE the uk firmware but THE UK firmware.
Some people just prefer to complain instead of moving a finger themselves.
Just flashed premium bugs 4.1.2... not bad so far! Well woth the upgrade from ics unless you use the gallery, as that isn't fixed!

Then stop being a complainawhinger then and just wait for Samsung to deliver your update to you OTA. While you're waiting for it I'll continue to try and help people wanting to update to the latest version, with my sick, but helpful advice, :good:

haha we need more people like you Riki1kenobi... some fun but helpful post...
people should not get easily offended over some jokes the man was just trying to help... and as JJEgan said i also can't understand why so many xda members here are waiting for ota updates... i understand that xda is the place to look for all things android but really the 1st step you should do is not rely on kies and learn some odin and flashing..
but hell we're all in one community... there are always some whiners and whatever kind of people and that just adds to the fun of being here on xda..

I absolutely, totally agree with you. People see something new and they just WANT to update, because we are consumer whores.
However, I needed to update to fix the notorious PDF import problem in S-Note (as noted in first post in this thread). Basically, if I wanted to import PDFs from school into S-Note, S-Note would crash. This only happens to specific versions of the N8010 firmware (Canada being one of them).
I don't come looking for fights etc. as a lot of people do, I just speak (sometimes shout!) the truth.
Different regions /countries have different legal requirements which I suspect is one of the big delays for some regions. If you want everything done for you (OTA) , be patient and stup reading forums lokking for the latest updateor you will never be happy.
Of course you could also encourage your government to remove some of the restrictions, but for that I think you will be waiting much longer! I for one am amazed the updates get out as quickly as they do, re-evaluating every rom in every country for legal issues has to be a very expensive nightmare. Samsung is a big international company, ignoring regional laws is not really an option.

I have lost my hope that New Zealand will be able to get JB Update. So now after reading many threads for months I am plunging into this forum to know how I can update my machine.
My tablet
Model Number
GT-N8000
Baseband version
N8000XXALI3
Android version

1. Please suggest me which firmware is going to be suitable for my tablet
2. If tomorrow NZ firmware is released and I be able to flash it manually will it be back to normal for OTA upgrades ?
Thanks
