video format and resolution - Xperia Arc General

What format and resolution should I convert to for the xperia arc to play videos?
I have some cartoon shows in wmv format and I want to play them on the xperia. The specs for xperia arc is - 854x480 pixels - 4.2" 16,777,216 colour TFT.
I currently have an htc eris android and it only plays 3gp by default. So should I convert to 3gp for xperia arc as well? I'm too cheap to buy any video players from the market.

I think an mp4 should be sufficient. That's the resolution that will support on the arc

the panel is a a40p, but with the LED subanel, we have better resolution, the diference seeing a 720p video to a 480p is really great... about format, mp4 and m4k are the only ones that work to this moment

If you buy DicePlayer, you can use MKVs.

MKV only in 720p? Why not 1080p? Is this software issue or hardware isn't able to playback so high resolution??

my phone can play 1080p which I take from youtube with my default media player

you can play 1080, but the density of the screen is only a 480, the 720p`video is to "duplicate" the quality displayed but i think is a waste to play 1080 video

I understand, but the hdmi support is enchanced to the info of the screen, you only can output 720p quality, or that is what say the specs, you can try and tell us it is working, that would.be aweome
Sent from my LT15i using XDA App

I had connected by Arc on an Full HD monitor and it only outs 720p when I watched some TV series (the video source is MKV and is at 480p rendered via software via MX Player). In this regard, I think the HDMI capability of Arc is only to 720p. That means even if you have an 1080p video on Arc, it will out only at 720p via the HDMI. I will confirm this limitation once I got the chance.

In the service menu in HDMI settings the highest choice given is 720 so it does appear to be that way

How ironic. LOL
It doesn't seem logical to play 720p videos on the Touch HD anyway. First of all, the max resolution on device is 800x480 and secondly 720p videos take quite a bit of space.
If you really want clarity, focus on encoding the video at the screens native res or even a bit lower resolution. What's more important is the bitrate and the codec.

but my old nokia device n95 8gb plays 720p videos but not in full screen
can we play mp4 videos on htc hd with high frame rate and without the need of video encoder [with program on device ] like nokia devices
don't you think the nokia software somehow converted it ?
i mean a device with a
240 x 320 res playing media in 1280_720 and then resizing it even more ?
would not make much sense as it would have to process that huge amount
of data from 1280_720 to resize it down

HD videos are also 720*480 (480p) videos. And Blackstone can play videos with resolution 800*480. But just mp4 format. So, if you ask me, HTC Hd can play HD videos 480p in mp4 format.
HTC HD, Xperia and maybe some newest HTC devices are only devices that can play HD videos.
You can also watch HD videos on youtube with inbuilt youtube player.

but when i tried these mp4 files at vga resolution it runs at very low frame rate also it is said in the specifications that it can run up to vga at 30 frames per second what is the problem
remember that you cant use coreplayer to play mp4 files and expect a result
the htc albujm app is the best for mp4
i myself prefer 400x240 divx videos
I have Att Fuze(touch pro)
with Coreplayer where i can use the Pad to click forward on movie Videos
like a que forward while watching movies
Was wondering can we Set it on Volume control to forward Video ?
Cos will get a phone HD2
Please if anyone has Coreplayer on there phone
lol
lol, i nearly pissed myself. First of all 720p is 1280x720, secondly a nokia n97 hasnt got a chance in hell of running this video, as stated before it doesnt have the native screen res or the power to pump that many pixels. There are only one oe two phones that will process this resolution but none of them can show them in native resolution and so they are pointless anyway unless they have a HDMI tv out. ( a couple do).
The touch hd can barely play a DVD rip in 480p without losing frames for god sake.
If you want clear smooth video you have to re-encode at the native res of the device and use a code the phone can hardware accelerate, the touch HD can only accelerate MP4 codec and so you are limited to that.
Now the touch HD2... well I was going to get all exited about that until i found it had no TV or mini hdmi out, what a waste of [email protected] time that it. HTC dropped the ball again in my humble opinion.
Tegra is where it is at, bring on the phones, build it and I will come
Get the facts right bub...
HD videos are also 720*480 (480p) videos

NOT! HD starts at 720p! 480p is not and never has been HD!
hello my friend the first ans is it depands on which format u've to play. coz avi format not suported by wmp. After all the best option is to convert videos in littlebit low resolution so it also can't flickring when you play it & feel better experience and laisure to watching videos

480p is hd, but the hd can not play videos at anywhere near enough bitrate to be classed as hd lol also even if you play a video at the same resolution as 480p its not 480p hd unless the image is scanned progressively, rather than in alternate fields.

How to watch HD movies?

I have 720p movies ripped from original disc to MKV on my desktop. How do I watch these 720p movies on my EVO? Is there an easier way to put movies on my EVO?
Another question, when I go to YOUTUBE.com on my EVO, all the videos look blurry and are horrible quality... Even when I do a search for 720p quality videos, when I play the video it looks horrible... What am I doing wrong?
What audio/video codecs were used during the encodong?
With youtube, click the HQ button. That should increase the quality.
i have also set youtube to high quality from the setting but still no 720p videos even after the HQ on.

The Evo doesn't have support for HD video. What you're looking for is the HQ button, which stands for high quality. Not all videos have the HQ button enabled.

Sounds like you may be browsing to YouTube. Instead, go to "All apps" and open the "YouTube" app.
It all depends on the videos themselves. For example, lookup any new movie trailers and set the app to HQ, they should look spectacular.
Remember, Android still doesn't have a quality video player akin to CorePlayer for WinMo.
The device itself (correct me if I'm wrong) does not support playback at 720p on its own screen; it outputs 720p via the HDMI port.

You are correct--720p is 1280x720 and the EVO's screen is 800x480. So it will play 720p video, but scaled down to fit the EVO's screen resolution.
As far as playing video on the EVO screen, I think it will play any resolution (although you may get performance issues at very high resolutions) but scaled to fit the screen.
What programs are you guys using for ripping? Just curious...
Handbrake cya
settings
handbrake.
Aspect ratio: 800 x 480
Video codec: H.264(x264)
Framerate: Same as source
Avg Bitrate: 1500
Addio codec: AAC(faac)
Audio mixdown: Stereo
Sample rate: 480
All other settings stay at default. Videos come out crazy!! I got Avatar and Iron Man
Ripping blu-ray since the screen is higher res then DVD. Using rip264 and anydvd.

It's not cheap, but I figure that is the cost of having the freedom to copy blu-ray to my other devices. It would be nice though if it was a one time cost, but alas it is not.

1080p player

Can the hd play 1080p ?
Why would you want to play 1080p? The screen is not capable of playing even 720p, so why bother. 720p plays fine, so I guess the DHD might be able to play low bitrate 1080p.
e: Okay, maybe dlna : )

Does DHD's DLNA do transcoding? If it doesn't, you should be able to stream those videos.

[Q] 1080p on atrix multimedia?

hi imwondering if its posible PLAY 1080 content but not in phone i know until we get GB wilkl be relased the 1080 on phone but multimedia center its posible play 1080?if yes how i can? i try passing a file .mp4 and cant play.
thanks
No, the multimedia player sends a 720p signal to the tv. So while you can play 1080p using hdmi out, it's scaled to 720p.

I'm guessing a 1080p signal will be sent to the tv when moto updates the camcorder to shoot in 1080p.

1080p Video Playback on xperia play

Hi I have recently tried to play 1080p movie using mxplayer on my xperia play. It is running the krisdee nxt lite rom v1.3. I have tried overclocking to 1.4ghz but that didnt work. Can someone help me on this? Thanks
Why playing a 1080p movie, our pkay doens't even have this resolution. If you played the video it will be laggy.
You could try reencode the movie to 480p. If you don't care about quality, Total Video Converter is basic enough. (used it waaay back at 2009, not sure how is it now)
MediaCoder also seems to be able to do the job albiet slightly more advanced.
You could also stream the video using Emit or something similar. (used it quite a while back but didn't work as expected)
Hope it helps.
Hi thanks for the quick replies, at the moment I convert my movies from 1080p to 720p, as most of my movies are blue ray rips. They work perfectly at 720p. I tried 1080p but they are jerky and the audio is not clear. To save conversion I was wondering if there was anything I could do to get 1080p working smoothly. Thanks
As mentioned in the previous post, you could try Emit.
Look up google play store and see what other similar apps there are under their recommendation.
I'm sure there's something for this requirement.
Anyone have any more ideas?
hehe
xperia play does not support 1080P playback
The Xperia Play screen resolution is 854 x 480, so 1080p are useless
If you tried to play 1080p video, wouldn't there be black lines across the top and bottom?

Nope, as the Play's screen is 16:9 just like videos, so no black bars unless it's part of the video itself.
I never could get 1080p videos to run smoothly on mine, so I just used Handbrake to reencode it to 480p, as the screen is only 480p anyway.
