Hi All,
Enjoying my MT4g on Tmobile. I am interested in rooting my phone and getting the CM7 (Gingerbread) on my phone.
Before I jump into the guides, I wanted to know that is there a way to get back to stock TMO (that came with the phone) just in case I dont like CM7.
Secondly, is everything working on CM7 builds? Are there still any parts of the OS that do not work (wifi, camera etc).

Step 1: Do some reading, both of the RC1 thread and the Nightlies thread, and the CM7 FAQ. There are people who are having problems, there are people for whom things are perfect, and there are people for whom things are usable.
Step 2: Be sure to use the CORRECT version of ClockworkMod Recovery. With the exception of the specially-created 3.0.0.6 version that supports both Froyo and Gingerbread filesystems, you MUST use 2.x for Froyo based ROMs, and 3.x for Gingerbread based ROMs. This includes backup/restore as well as flashing.

I would suggest watching a video tutorial a few times if you have never rooted a phone before. If you are comfortable installing an OS on a computer then you probably won't have any trouble rooting.
You can always go back to stock if you like. Make sure you follow all the steps for the root procedure. I'm pretty sure grankin posted up the unroot procedure with the root procedure. One of the steps is saving a backup of your original phone settings. Keep that in a safe place.
I'm pretty sure CM7 isn't stable yet, but most everything works for that ROM. Wifi Calling and almost everything else. As always read the updates to see what the developer has fixed (or is working on) If you don't like a ROM you can always find another. That's pretty much the beauty of the whole thing.

I have a myTouch 4G. Is it worth rooting JUST to remove some of the stock apps (Amazon MP3, etc.)? Is there any benefit to be gained from doing that if I have no other reason that I want to root right now?

Okay. I understand. But I'm still pretty new at this and so far all I want to do is remove the "bloatware." Does it make a noticeable difference in the way the phone runs if I go through rooting to do that?

Just rooting the phone will offer no performance changes. The only thing Rooting does is give you [the user] Super User access.
With that you can do massive performance upgrade with s=off. but nothing Rooting Only will do.

So are you saying there's something more than rooting that I need to do in order to have the ability to delete the preloaded programs that I don't use?

I haven't rooted my MT4G yet, but I had a rooted and modded MT3G for a long time. I would read A LOT through the guides and threads involving rooting your device, because it seems like you don't know too much about it. But in short - rooting alone does nothing but give you super user access to the phone, which in non-nerd talk means you can control things about the phone that you couldn't do before rooting. If you then want to remove bloatware (as well as do anything else like flashing roms etc), it will require further steps. Again, READ READ READ (and WATCH WATCH WATCH videos).

I totally understand there is more required than just the rooting. And I really really appreciate your post. I guess what I'm trying to figure out is just if there is a benefit to removing bloatware? Maybe it's not really a "to root or not to root" question so much as a "will removing bloatware improve my phone at all" question? If there's a better place to ask, please point me in the right direction?

There is no performance benefit to removing bloatware if the application is not used. It just consumes space on the internal SD device.
Rooting and then disabling those apps merely ensures they won't be run.

Titanium backup is a paid app that can remove apps after root (Monopoly, Asphalt 5, etc) Most ROM's you install after root have these apps removed.
Also it's pretty nice to underclock the phone to give you some great battery life. Really nice to set a profile when the screen is off that it slows the clock speed.

This is extremely helpful. I have lots and lots of research and learning ahead of me, but this at least gets me in the right direction. There's a lot to sort through.

TB does not remove system applications. It "Freezes" them. This marks them disabled in the Android package manager so they cannot be executed, and wont' be seen by the launcher / app drawer.
I mentioned disabling bloatware earlier in this thread. You can use TB to "Freeze" and "Thaw", or you can use the "pm disable" or "pm enable" commands from a terminal emulator.
Disabling a system application is significantly easier than removing it. Plus, removing it may break a dependent application. Yeah, removing Monopoly and Stock won't break anything, but you may decide some tool in the app drawer is unused -- but it is actually used by another app unbeknownst to you. Disabling is safer. Removing requires mounting /system in read/write mode, which is cumbersome to do manually with a mount command, but can be done from adb or Root Explorer.

I read back through the thread and I'm not 100% sure I found the reference to bloatware, but this is incredibly helpful.
To make sure I'm understanding correctly, I could:
- Root my phone using VISIONary
- Get TB Pro
- Freeze (or Thaw to reverse) any unwanted apps
Would this improve performance/storage in any way or simply remove those unwanted apps from the drawer?

Removing or disabling will offer little performance upgrade. Androids work much like a computer does. Just because the Application is setting on the phone doesn't mean that it is using any resources other than memory. The only thing you will gain by removing or disabling those application is the memory that they are using.

1- yes
Download and install VISIONary.apk
Temp Root with VISIONary
Download Ti/Backup
Freeze or delete any unwanted application
and yes other applications will be able to use that space. IF you delete them. If you freeze the no. They are still in the memory the CPU will just not pick them up.

OK, so I had a Vibrant and spend some time trying to tweak it to resolve the short battery life and GPS problems, however, at the end of my two-week "buyers remorse" period it still wasn't working very well (in fact, the last day it was working significantly worse - using Google Nav crashed the thing 4 times in a row!), so I took it back rather than get stuck w/it for a two-year contract.
However, looking at the alternatives, I'm not convinced there is anything better than a WORKING Vibrant, and reading more on various forums it sounds like I may have just had a bad unit ... or not applied the right tweaks to it. So I'm thinking I may get another unit and give it another try. But before I do I'd like to know the best way to prep/tweak the thing straight out of the box so I can start from the best possible baseline. I'm pretty tech savy so I'm not afraid of rooting or removing bloatware but I also don't want to spend the whole time trying to install some esoteric custom Android build. Can anybody provide a short list of the best things to do to improve the over all phone performance and reliability?

which bloatware apps can i safely remove? i have read a lot of warnings about being careful what you remove. how do you do it - is it a simple matter of deleting a file, or is there more to it?

A good way to start is to read the STICKIED post. it has a lot of the information that you're looking for there
I would just use Root Explorer to remove the apps, or Titanium Backup does this also I think. This is all in the sticky.
I am new to Android and have been learning the ropes and tweaking slowly. I followed the recommendation to try ADW or Launcherpro and am glad I did. I happened to give Launcherpro a try first and have found its ability to customize the dock great. I would recommend giving it a shot if you are trying to customize the phone to your liking.
After having the Vibrant for a few weeks I simply got fed up with the sluggish UI always lagging, having hiccups and all the latter. I know the phone is better than this (how can my old MyTouch Slide be performing way better?) so I went ahead and rooted.
Before this I would come on XDA and be overwhelmed by the development forums. The terms were so foreign like it's own language. Now I'm getting used to it and can root a Vibrant in under a minute. Very simple procedure.
My first real problem came with the lagfix. At first I could not get RyanZA's fix to work. I thought maybe I did something wrong or my device was faulty. So I tried the update.zip method and it didn't work either. I reset my phone to factory settings, re-rooted, and would come back to the lagfix later.
I came back to the forums today and decided I would try the lagfix again. This time I was more calm and was less overwhelmed thank god. The reason it didn't work the first time was because I didn't have the drivers installed. I went ahead and installed those, as well as Kies (this isn't needed for the lagfix though). After installing the drivers the script worked perfectly. However the script only worked if the phone wasn't mounted, if it was the script would not work, kinda odd but its alright with me lol.
I quickly rebooted and ran quadrant, scored a 2140 baby! Whoooo. There is almost no lag on my phone now. This was my biggest concern was how the phone was so sluggish, now everything is instant and snappy. Really happy with the development of this thing. I feel accomplished now haha.

It's not odd at all that the fix doesn't work if the memory is mounted. Think of the memory as a cd, it cannot be accessible to 2 machines at the same time. If the memory is mounted/accessible on your pc, that means the phone itself cannot access it and the fix uses that memory so it makes perfect sense for it to be NOT mounted.

A kernel is the core of the OS, it is the main part. Overclocking should not be a problem if you run tests(setcpu burnin or something else)to make sure the phone does not freeze.

ODIN is a software written by samsung that is used to reflash the firmware/ROM on the phone.
ADB(Android developer bridge)is basically a program which let's you copy and retrieve software onto your phone using the CLI, also it let's you run cli commands on the phone from your computer(much more convenient). ADB is part of the google developers package which can be downloaded from Google fro free.

The phone will not blow up, if the overclocking frequency is higher then what the phone can handle 99 out of 100 times it will just freeze with no permanent damage. A phone's enemy is high heat, not overclocking, eventhough some overclocking causes temperatures to increase.
Now that I've rooted now do I remove the bloatware on the phone? I don't want to install any roms yet until cyanogen or another rom comes out that is easier to install and less harmful to the phone.
Removing bloatware can be done by installing "ASTRO" from the market which will let you uninstall system apps. Some are easy to recognize and some are not. If you are not sure what an app is/does do not remove it.

I downloaded Astro. For some reason I can't even find the .apk file to uninstall the Sims. I tried to uninstall apps like Kindle and Slacker and it wouldn't let me. I thought having superuser permissions would allow me to remove any app from the phone?
Use titanium back up to remove those apps.

Thanks! That app worked! I removed a crap ton of bloatware. Only problem now is that I get a force close error when the phone boots up from an app I removed, how do I regulate which apps open when the phone is turned on?

I followed all the instructions and installed CWM recovery, and then installed su and now I have root. It was pretty easy. There is some loss of quality of the camera but I can live with it for now.
What are the suggested modifications now? The main thing I would like to do is purge all the stupid spyware / adware apps on this. What is recommended?
I am hoping there will soon be a CM install for this so I can truly get rid of all the Sony junkware.
Not sure but can you keep us posted on your battery life after installing a custom rom, curious to know if the stock rom has some special battery efficiencies.

I'll tell you what I did:
uninstall all sony bloatware, expecially that antivirus app...
install xposed framework
install titanium backup
Now I'm just waiting for CM or whatever rom
Do you have a list of package names I should nuke? I can't quite match up all the package names with the evilware.
I'm looking at the crazy permissions some of these apps have. Weather Widget can read my call log! wtf!

Xposed Modules
There should be am exposed module who can do this for you, it should be called set permissions or something like that... I personally deleted everything from Sony, I use 3rd party apps for weather, calendar and so on... But this is personal taste I just prefer to use the phone for its hardware, not for the Sony brand
Install gesture control and permanently disable the nav bar. That's what I would do gestures are the best way to control a touch device IMHO.
Install Greenify to enhance your battery life. Install Adaway to get rid of ads system wide. Use Tasker to automatically enable/disable pattern unlock based on your location (ie home or not) and also automate the phone putting itself in flight mode when you charge at night.

I can't wait to install Xposed framework. I can't live without "vibrate on answer", long press tile to go to setting, camera shutter mute, Wanam's Youtube ad-remover, and most importantly GEM Xperia module to hide unwanted apps. Some root apps like Titanium backup, Samba droid, SSH droid, Greenify etc. Fingers crossed for a root exploit.
If you do not really know what to do with root, then I'd really question whether damaging your device is worth it.
This phone is super powerful and the "bloatware" doesn't affect performance - certainly from my user perspective. Just use apex or nova and hide the apps you don't want to see.
TBH, as much as I love tinkering around with my phones, the need for root (as opposed to it being nice to have it) is diminishing as android develops.
Will root for titanium but not much. sony has the battery management that can compare with greenify.

My big thing is I want all the spyware to be gone, and I basically do not trust any carrier / manufacturer builds.
Btw the camera is very good, even post-rooting. And battery life is really amazing. I ordered the magnetic charger, and I can probably wait to charge my phone until the new charger arrives. It seems like this phone could go for several days pretty easily. I'm impressed.

My warranty is running out so I'm on the fence: look for a new phone or go the rooting and custom ROM path and continue using Note 4.
So as we have now MM and some updated apps, air command and other stuff is updated.. so what additional benefits custom ROM could give?
Speed? I do some gaming and can't complain that Note 4 is slow. It's really fast.
Disable more apps? That would be a benefit coz now not all apps can be disabled.
Remove quick connect buttons?
What else am I missing?

I'm using stock MM 6.0.1 (DPB1) and it's great. Still a fantastic phone for 2016 and really fast. I only root for Titanium Backup to freeze all the crap and to boost the headphone output level.
Only wish is for universal DPI adjustment as I can't be arsed messing about with xposed framework and the like but it's not a biggie.
You can root without installing a custom ROM and it takes literally 2 minutes.

For me the main reason for rooting is to be able to get the huge games I have downloaded over the years to all fit onto my ext SD card. I also enjoy the ability to use apps like Cerberus,, Greenify and SD Maid.... etc. to their absolute full potential.
I root phones because I want things the way I want them. For example I don't like the quick connect logos when I lower the screen to see any alerts. I also don't like how the phone warns me that the volume is getting loud. As if I don't know how.loud the phone is. Little thing like that drive me crazy. I root the phone so I can deal with those little announces like that.
If you have to ask whether its worth rooting or not, then I am not sure you are in the right place man. Said it plenty times before, saying it again, I don't really see the point of using Android without rooting, unless you need that KNOX thingy. Why? I can't even start to mention. Take AdAway for example, and that's the first step only of a journey of countless steps.
Custom ROMs on the other hand? If you see a really good dev, then yes, like Arya, or Omega etc., otherwise no comments.

So if one isn't rooting, then one might as well use...what, an iOS device? That doesn't make sense to me. There are plenty of compelling reasons to use Android over alternate mobile OS'es, even if one is using unrooted Android. Even if one is using unrooted, unmodified, BAD skinned Android.

I have 96 apps frozen. Mostly pre-installed crap and many system apps including all the wireless/remote/sharing stuff I don't need. You need to choose what's important to you but it makes a massive difference to battery life.
If you don't know what is rooting for, you should forget about it.

I know what rooting is and I've used it in my previous phones (Nexus mainly) for many many things.
Why? Because Nexus didn't have all the features I needed.
And now Note 4 has battery optimization feature (so no need for Greenify), all those notification buttons, quick buttons, side buttons you name it (no custom rom is needed), basic backup function works to Samsung cloud (it partially covers tibackup) etc etc.
Well.. AdAway is a different thing.
I myself try to keep my phone clean and running perfectly which contributes to great battery life...I just had to do a clean install and with the amazing root SD maid app it helps me keep track of exactly how many items are running, stopped, and that are installed... if their system, user or actual library.
before I had to wipe my phone I had on an average 36 items running in the background which is phenomenal. My phone performed perfectly... I could easily get 3 days and 8 hours sot....
What I use is an old app called "Total Commander "what's funny is it hasn't been updated for ages. Sometimes it won't uninstall everything unless you open the folder and uninstall the app itself.. It unmounts gets rid of it and then remounts ...I tried uploading some videos that I took doing it but this crappy XDA app won't allow me to do it it keeps failing if anyone has any questions just ask.... Nevertheless here's a couple screenshots before during and after but, to say the least I think everyone should have SD maid and total commander on their phone unless you prefer to run modules that can do it all for you... Those that thinks this is nonsense and please don't leave smart remarks just pass it up and laugh if you will I'm just sharing what has kept my OnePlus 6t in Tip-Top shape...
also I've done a lot of research on what certain apps are there for such as OnePlus device manager odm what a joke who would wants their info sent to China every 6 hours every day I mean come on. Lmao...
These screenshots are with the app. The app being deleted and then the third screenshot is showing you that the app is no longer there...
Also if you don't feel safe deleting the app you can create a folder on the internal storage I make my system apps folders in my Download folder and just move to that folder that way if you're paranoid and you think something may happen wrong you can just move it back....
believe me I've deleted everything that can possibly be deleted and the only thing that's happened is my phone runs way better.??

I'm not here to stomp toes or be a prick...I just feel people should really know what is on their phones and I believe everyone has the right to be enlightened and have their eyes opened and I'm hoping that this will help people out.

I agree. One of the reasons I don't run OOS is because of the absurd number of trackers and other stuff they have. A lot of their System Apps are Trackers and removing some of them causes a Bootloop. So I just prefer to run an AOSP ROM.
BTW, MiXPlorer from XDA works perfectly fine for removing apps from /system. It can also delete the Folders. Just make sure you don't have any Magisk Module that modifies System otherwise it won't work. I also had a Custom Debloater that would remove all apps that can be removed but I no longer have it. In my opinion, running AOSP is much better than OOS. Waay less tracking services and better Privacy and Battery.

Right on I had mixplorer.. it wasn't for me... I like test kernels so for now I'm staying on OOS..
right now I got 42 items running in the background which is pretty damn good

Yeah I will eventually... I have to make up another list I wiped my phone the other day and forgot about saving that list... But if you don't want to wait the best thing to do would be download xXx no limits and then go through the profile that comes with that zip and that gives you a good idea of what you can and can't get rid of.

Here's a list thanks to Tomatot Debloater. You might just want to use that..There's a thread or you can just delete them one by one like I do...I just prefer to do it that way so if something goes wrong I could just move the system app right back...that's why it's good to just delete the app from the folder that way you can place it back in the folder where It came from...

AntHal is used for connecting to Fitness Devices like Bluetooth Smartwatch & Fitness Bands. Photos Online is OnePlus's Wallpaper app. Sort of. You can browse photos clicked by the Community and set them as a Wallpaper. Both are pretty useless. Unless you use them. In that case, they are not useless.

Your best bet is Tomatot's Debloat Script. It is available in the Cross Device Development section. Mine was based on that, just customized to my needs. It's actually pretty easy to customize it and Tomatot has a done a good job at explaining it in the OP.
Using this is generally unnecessary. I think there's easier ways to get rid of system apps and not have to rely on an app to do it for you. Just install a terminal emulator. Then run these few commands.
$su
#mount -o rw,remount /
#cd /system/app/
#rm -rf name-of-app-folder/
#cd /system/priv-app/
#rm -rf name-of-app-folder/
#reboot
This is just a quick way to accomplish the same thing if you run into problems with an app. If you mess anything up, reflash rom and it will restore all system apps again.
Apps I recommend to definitely get rid of are OPcommon log tool,OPbugreportLite..
all ODM ,,(OnePlus system service) and OnePlus System Service manager...all items on that list are safe to get rid of..
Although I recommend you to look into it yourself for educational reasons..
I got 10.3.2 running smooth and all junk ( intrusive bloat) removed and so far this update seems good to go...

Not that I've noticed...really running smooth for me.. I use Omega kernel too.
