I keep seeing posts from various users here, as well as all over the internet, about how easy it is to get SMS up and going through WiFi and they describe various ways of accomplishing it, but none of them ever work for me. Can someone/anyone tell me once in for all rather its possible, and please describe (in detail if you please), how to do it?
Question: If I, or anyone else, was to decide to just wait for the WiFi ONLY Tabs to come out for this very purpose (texting via wifi), would we be wasting our time? I mean IF its not possible via wifi on the wifi/3G Tab, then we shouldnt expect it to work on the wifi ONLY Tab either right? Thanks in advance.
It is possible (and quite easy) to get SMS working over WiFi. If you have a google voice account, you can download the google voice app and use that to text people (or you can use other apps like textplus). That is the current setup that I have since I have no texting plan on my line.

Thanks for the reply. Google voice was one of those ways that I had read about already and for me it was not easy at all, and I could never get it to work. The last thing I read about setting that up was using le your home # for the Tab since it is not used for texting purposes...well, it didnt work for me. Maybe you could explain exactly how you set it up?
That app you mentioned I, I tried that a while back and my son told me he was flooded with advertisements...etc, so I dumped it.

I have followed all of the instructions on google website, I've put in the # to be used for my device, google has verified it, I've downloaded the app for my SG Tab, but it will NOT WORK. Perhaps you could explain in detail how exactly you set it up? I really don't know what else to do.

What am I to do after this point if....
I'm to this point (see attachment) and I'm trying to set everything up "for texting only" and what I've read is "use your home phone #" because it is not used for texting...etc. Well, when I get to the point of what the attachment shows, what the heck do I do? It doesn't seem like I would be able to use my voice phone line to do this, and I cannot use the SGT as I have no dialer??????
Have you tried opening google in the browser via your Tab and useing the provided dialer in google? I use it on my PC as my PC has no dialer either. I will try with my tab and edit this post if it works or not.
I know it's not quite the same, but you could try using "Whatsapp" from the market if all parties have either android or iOS devices.
I just tried your suggestion, well..I at least got on the tab and went to GV site, but then I noticed voice had been activated without me following through at that point shown in the attachment. Now I have another problem. When I sent a text to the tab from my Evo, my home phone rang and Sprint sent what's called a TTLL (Text to Land Line) call....so that's screwed up. I used my tab to try it the other way, but cannot see any way to even send a text, not online at the voice site and not on the tab with the voice app. So it looks like I'm still stuck at not being able to get this going. Really frustrating..

Thanks for the suggestion. I'll give it a go, and if it works, I think I can afford 2 dollars a year. I might just do that, thanks again.
EDIT: This won't work because it has to verify a number for your phone. The tab doesn't have a number.

I have not used the setting "Forwad to Google Chat" and confirm that I'm able to send/receive text but I have my free phone number from IPKall and I'm able to send/receive text using GV account from the tab. Read the instruction in the Sprint VoIP call in Dev if you want to (find my post there).

Thanks for the suggestion, but unfortunately this isnt working for me either. Im at the point of giving up now and just returning the damn Tab. I did all kinds of research on this prior to even buying the tab to at least try and make sure I could accomplish it. Most of what I found was "seemingly" possitive. Everyone makes it sound sooo damned easy to set it up and get it going, well its not, and I will go as far as saying that it isnt possible at all, for at least some, me being included in that latter bunch.
Sms was designed to be sent over cellular network and being associated with the phone number.
The number is also needed for GV. You might try Skype and get phone # and etc using it but its all far from comfortable. There are other services that might work as proxies for you but all cost some money.

Thanks for the reply. I guess then that all of those posts that I've seen here, as well as all over the net, was just "bull". I say this only because of your comment about SMS being designed for cellular network, and only because these posts I'm talking about specifically say they got things up and running and are successfully texting on their SG Tabs via WiFi/Google Voice.
I suppose then that I should just forget about waiting for that WiFi only Tab because SMS would not work on that device either. I wouldn't mind spending some money to get this going, although I don't think that I would want to get into a contract or anything like that and be stuck spending on a monthly basis, which I think all of the Wirelss companies like Sprint make you do (not sure).
For SMS and voice phone on my Tmobile Tab I use prepaid voice only Sim. The tab was flashed with Euro ROM and works very smooth and giving me ability to place voice calls and send SMS if needed. It costs me money but no monthly obligations.
BTW, I can send Sms using Sim card from my phone as well.

I guess I couldn't do anything like that correct? Is there a difference between T-Mobile and Sprint Tabs .... besides what may be the obvious, like I know Sprint is CDMA, not sure of T-Mobile. Anyway, do you think the same type of setup is possible with my Sprint device? If so, could you please describe how I would go about setting it up? Can you make non-long distance calls using google voice and your phone???
If so, can you be on that call and browse the web at the same time??
So technically, If you use google voice for the call you are using data and not voice, therefore it seems technically possible to browse and talk at the same time.
Has anyone tried this??? I only have google voice for voicemail so cant test right now.
before you assume that GV automatically defaults to using the data connection why don't you search around a bit...
now, with that being said... once you have managed to get GV operating through Data (it is possible) im not sure if you could call and surf at the same time or not

Since with Google voice you can make calls from your computer, it is easy to assume that it uses data.
now, with that being said... why would you bother replying and telling me to search around when you yourself don't know the answer to my question??

google voice does not use data. it uses your sprint number.
basically when someone calls your GV it forwards calls to your cell number (or whatever number you want it to), then your sprint number rings. and when you dial out it calls from your sprint number to GV then GV forwards it (the call) to the party on the other end.
it can be set up to use data but is difficult to do and call quality over EVDO or 1x is bad. wifi its ok.
here are a few guides i'm using atm to get this set up over data, i can get incoming calls working but outgoing calls aren't working. i'm this close...
if you set this up like this, then YES you will be able to call and use the internet at the same time. but just using the GV app no its not possible on sprint. it's the way the network is set up. other networks you can but not on sprint.

exactly, thats why im a bum and dont feel like searching either... I know for a fact that a few guides exist, i read a few of them quite some time ago
So here is what I did... I now have a working VOIP phone service via my T-Mobile Tab..
-- Get the hacked Skype App (allows 3G calling) http://www.megaupload.com/?d=156KWZVH
-- Get Google Voice from Market
-- Go to skype.com and setup an account
-- Order a Skype Internet Number (it's $30 for a year right now -- normally $60)
-- Add a Skype calling plan ( I went with $2.99 a month for unlimited calling)
-- Set Skype to display your Google Voice Number (Caller ID Settings)
-- Set Google Voice to forward all calls to your Skype number
-- Go into Google Voice App and set it up to use your Skype number for voicemail notifications.
It works and it works pretty darn well...
Pros:
--Incoming and outgoing voice capabilities
--Unlimited calling in the US and Canada for $2.99 a month
--With 3G data plan you always have phone functions to dial out and receive
--Use Google Voice for SMS messages and you only have the one number.
Cons:
--If you don't want to use the Google Voice number for SMS then you will have 2 numbers. The one that came on your Tab that is used for SMS/MMS and a number for phone usage.
--Price for this to work per year amounts to $66 ($30 for the Skype number and $36 for the unlimited plan) Not really a con if you consider this is the total cost for a year of unlimited cell (VOIP) calls from you Tab
--If you use Google Voice for SMS it does not do MMS
Here is how it works...
When someone calls your Google Voice number it forwards it to the Skype number and the Tab rings...
When you call someone it displays your Google Voice number...

1) a big con for me is that it means I can't port my existing cell no. to my new Tab... and since I'm a consultant and it's been my phone no. for a long time... that's kind of a drag.

Skype can be sketchy if on a slow or weak 3G or Wifi connection... I have had no problems with it yet though...
Yes, no 911 calling.... But you can program your local police / fire / EMS non emergency dispatch center number as a contact... That's what I did... Granted it's not as fast to get answered as 911, but it is a suggestion...
I don't see why you could not forward the previous cell # to GV then have it forwarded to Skype. Then set the Caller ID in Skype to display your previous cell number... Should work...
I might give this a try and see how I like.... since the phone flashing seems to be stuck at 2G plus a few other problems at this point....

I decided to do this route as opposed to flashing the other way... Flashing the Euro ROM does still have issues and even once they are worked out, I can't see a US carrier adding voice to the Tab... Even with flashing the Euro ROM you will still need another SIM card to use that has voice functions enabled on it (hence, a different number like this process requires)...
Many people already have my GV number so this was also an easy way to get phone function without much effort... And at $66 a year for unlimited voice, I don't see a carrier plan even coming close to that...

I did this for months on my old Milestone (Droid) due to me being in Canada and everyone I knew being back in the US (and all calls to the US are int'l long distance via cell) until I found a way to make GV work here in Canada via normal phone lines.
Yes, call quality via Skype is sketchy at times, depending on connection quality, and there's ALWAYS lag.
Call forwarding works fine.
I wouldn't sweat 911, but then again I have almost no respect for that service anyway.
How stable has this been running for the ones using it?

You'll need some sort of VOIP to make it work, but it doesn't have to be Skype.
Keep in mind, Google Voice is NOT a VOIP service, it's a fancy call forwarding and voicemail service that also lets you pick a free US phone number for life.
And folks, there's always Sipdroid and a SIP number service (there's quite a few besides Gizmo)

I currently only have the Google Voice app installed (no hacked Skype). When I go into my contacts (app which came with Tab) and I click on a contact, and then click the message icon, a little screen pops up asking if I want to complete the action using Messaging or Google Voice. Furthermore, you can check the "Use by default for this action" to always use Google Voice for texting. When I click Google Voice the text shows up to other people as my Google Voice number.
If the trick in this thread can use your Google Voice number as what shows up to other people as your caller ID, wouldn't this simplify you down again to one number (the Google Voice number)?
the problem with this is skype doesnt work with Bluetooth headset. so you either have to get a WIRED headset or use speaker phone which means no privacy

It would, but GV still does not do MMS..... Plus you would loose the snazzy Tab SMS/MMS messaging app...

Yeah, and I love that app....
About 5 minutes after I turned my Tab on I got a text asking if I wanted to buy some chronic/Mex from someone who obviously didn't know their contact's phone no. had changed!
But the app is great!

Good point, decisions decisions! For me I may be willing to sacrifice MMS for the simplicity of one phone number. I would justify it by using video calling, YouTube posting, and Facebook/Picasa pictures. I'm already giving up the native Email app because it puts weird labels on my Gmail emails instead of archiving emails like the Gmail app. So much for "native tablet optimized apps."
Cons for this route:
No 911 support
Two phone numbers or no MMS
Complicated calling procedure through Skype

The dialer is missing on the sprint version but I managed to get to it..kinda. I installed LauncherPro and HomeSmack. The dialer shows up but when I tap it, it opens Network Manager and gives the error "cannot make calls with the galaxy tab". Hopefully this is a clue that someone more experienced can use. Also there are some fishy apk's I found. If anyone wants a list, or actual apk files please message me.

How are you going to make calls (if at all you somehow get that working) when you don't have a voice calling plan attached to it? The ESN is in the database as a data only device, so i see no point. This is a CDMA Tab.
It's not like the GSM models where you swap the SIM with one from a phone that has a voice/data plan attached to it.
It's assigned a phone number, so it is voice capable. This IS possible to do... but I don't want to try anything crazy until we get Sprint's stock firmware .tar in case I need to wipe completely from a screw-up.

The point is not whether it is assigned a phone number (it's a CDMA device so it IS assigned an MDN on the network) or not but whether the account (in this case the Tab) can make and receive phone calls like under a normal plan.
Bump for the cause. I activated my Sprint Galaxy Tab in my country without problem but I still see the roaming icon and the legend "International". Is there a piece of sotware that informs the tablet that Im not using it in a Sprint network or inside EU?

i got incoming calls on my sprint galaxy tab but i i dial a call the message comes up i did alot of changes to it trying to get it all working but i didnt realize that the incoming was working since i was only trying to make calls on it and last night someone called me and i was able to talk on it.
only incoming though
so now we know its for sure
with this its obvious that its possible to get outgoing since everything is all there i have my line on cricket and web works for a bit but it reverts back
i was messing with files of a galaxy s but they wont work anyone know how to
be able to install them on the tab i just copied them to my filesystem and they wont install

How to enable the phone function?
Im making calls off of mine and it works like a charm.just go to the market and buy groove ip or googlr it and get for free.it works with your google voice account.pair it up with your desires blutooth and your good to go.enjoy.

How do you indicate your desire to place an emergency call? There's no dialer to even punch "911" into...
My clueless-noob side is surely showing, but this is something I'm very interested in, please forgive what's probably a silly question.
Sprint Galaxy Tab and GrooVe IP
I installed grooVe IP last night on my 7" Sprint Galaxy Tab. It was a little bit of a hassle because first you have to set up Google Voice. Then you need to download the Google Voice app and go through the setup. I rebooted my phone and was then able to get more setting adjustments on Google voice website on my desktop to set up my tablet. It seems that I can now make calls from my Tablet. I tried a few different numbers. 2 things I can't get to work is the bluetooth functionality (always comes out through tablet speakers even though "Bluetooth" is the only option selected) and being able to receive calls. I was reading on Google that they are currently working with Sprint to roll out selective call forwarding but that my number is not allowed at this time. Strange that it will let me make a call but not receive one. Anyone have a work around for this. I tried to set up my voicemail but I could never dial into my tablet to enter the activation code provided by Google. If I could get it to receive calls I would be ecstatic. I love being able to do a search on google for a business and when it shows the phone number, be able to call that person by touching the number and not having to do it from my regular phone. Especially when driving.
This may be a dumb question, but does anyone know if sending/receiving txts would be possible from a wifi only xoom? I imagine it would work in gtalk, but I would like if there was a way to do it from handcent or something. Likely I will be either connected to my house wifi/work wifi/tether from my D1. If my phone isnt in my hand, but my Xoom is, id rather reply/send a text from the xoom, rather than screwing around with what device is where, I would like to use the xoom if thats whats in my hand at the time.
Anyone think there is a shot at this?
Only other guess I would have is that I think my phone has a sms backup that automatically saves a text into my gmail. The Xoom would need to set up to notify me of a new email (not hard to do), however my replies would then be sent as an email, which might not work the best....
I would assume google voice would work. It sends SMS out through data rather than as an actual SMS, so it should work. But, I do not know since I dont have a xoom, ha.
Google voice shouldn't be a problem. I'd imagine it works like any other android device.
i will add this question to "for those on the borderline, what do you want to know" thread and we will find out if it works with google voice. handcent probably wont work as there has to be a text messaging app already i believe

Yes, but that is likely the only option.
im sure someone will make an app that will link to your phone and let you remote control your texts from the xoom
excuse my lack of knowledge for google voice. I tried to do a little quick research.. If I want to keep my number (I have had it since like 2002), I am reading that you can pay to port it to GV? So I would pay the $20, and then I would be good?

Yes and no. You would essentially be porting your number to google and would then need to get a new number from your cell provider. You may be hit with an ETF if you are still on contract though.
In it's simplest form, Google Voice is essentially a forwarding service. You have a number with GV that will forward calls and texts to the phones that you have set up. For example, I have my Nexus One (personal), iPhone (work) and office phone configured. WHen someone calls my GV number, it rings all three phones. When I get a text, it is forwarded to any mobile device with GV installed and set up with my account.
What about VoIP using Google Voice on the Xoom?

I hope so, because I dont want to use a different (GV) phone number, and I am not interested in porting my number; messing up my contract...
If anyone knows any good developers, ask them if they think some type of program is even possible. It would be worth a few bucks
You know what.. and I really hope this becomes the solution.. it just seems to make sense. Does anybody know about that Sony Ericson bluetooth device that comes with a strap to look like a watch? And it kind of gets data from your android phone such as text messages, weather, incoming/missed calls etc.
So you keep your phone in your pocket, but have all the info you may want to check right on your wrist.
If you could just sync your android tablet with your android phone through BT, just like that SE product, so you can use its data connection, receive/respond to text messages, that would be awesome. I can see a problem in this where carriers want to double dip by making u get a separate plan for each, but with wireless hotspot it doesn't even matter. It just makes everything more convenient.
Maybe its just me, but something like this would be a HUGE feature in my eyes. Plus, it gives people a reason to use not one but two android devices. Win-Win for Google, and users who like both products.

I agree. I'm trying to hold out on the WiFi-only version as well, and I would love to be able to answer text messages on my Xoom. Swyping on my Evo is really easy, but not having to switch devices would definitely be worth a few bucks!

hahahahaha so crazy you say that. Back in 2004 I almost dropped out of college to attempt to patent the watch like idea.. after consulting with a friend whose dad was a patent attorney, he said there were some similar ideas floating around, and the risk likely wouldnt be worth it.. Regardless, for my MBA last year, we had to create a new product. When I shared this idea with my group members, and told them how it was an idea I came up with back in 2004, we went with it, was a fun class project!

For what it is worth, my Galaxy Tab let's me send texts from the Galaxy Tab phone number.
Another reason I went with Sprint over Verizon. Sprint was $29.99 for 5GB and unlimited messaging versus Verizon which was $20 for 1GB and no messaging.
I'm kind of bummed the Xoom won't be on Sprint initially, but oh well...I don't really *need* another number to text from.

This is a CDMA device. I don't think there is a sim card slot.

The Xoom is CDMA, but there is a (micro, I believe) sim card slot. It will be used when verizon rolls out 4g. Unfortunately this doesn't mean that GSM sim cards can be used.
another way of maybe doing it is if we got something like "MyMobiler" for android, and a version that rather pc viewing cell, tablet viewing cell..

I have an HTC EVO (with a bad esn) that I'm using just on wifi - I'm using Google Voice and GrooveIP to make calls but without service I can't finish the Google voice setup - It needs an active # so that it can send a text.
My question is - Is there an easy way to get around this? I've looked around for answers and I've learned a little about SIP but it seems like there's got to be an easier way. The other thing I was thinking was to just flash it to cricket, activate service for an hour, activate GV and then cancel.
Anyone been through this already and have advice?
SIPAndroid might be useful. Back when I set it up it did not ask me for a confirmation SMS. I used the default provider that comes with the application.
The reason I am trying to finish activating GV on the phone is so I can text from the same GV # that I call from. Wouldn't going through a SIP service force me to use a different #?

No since you already have a phone # (your GV #), the SIP is just the connection between the phone line and the internet.
I take it your setting up through your computer? Stop what your doing. Its a pain in the butt. (I know from experience)
Just download the Google voice app and sign in using the email account used to set up your Google voice account. Takes like 2 min and no calling necessary

Worth a try.. and i dont think it would.. GV and others like it that have calling, like skype, generally KNOW your trying to not use talk time so they know to do it via internet/3g/4g/wifi

I just confirmed it on my phone. If you shutdown the radio but leave wifi on, GV will complain about being unable to place the call because of airplane mode. I'm using the network app to disable only the CDMA radio, all others (BT, WiMAX and Wifi) are enabled.
So yes, you MUST use a SIP to be able to use GV without the CDMA radio attempting to make a regular call.

Thanks to fenixjn and the others in this thread. I got it going on my EVO 4g.
If u haven't figured out a way to set it up. use the internet. When it ask for a phone number use a landline number. After that u can use the google voice app like u wanted to. Hope that helps. After the activation call just unforward to that number and forward calls to gtalk or g chat. I forget exactly what the option is. I use groove IP to make and receive calls. I had sip Droid set up but it stopped working for me a few months ago. The money for groove IP is worth it. The calls are great quality. It has dropped calls on my a few times. But I can't complain for the ease of use and the low price.
Now I'm even more confused. I already set up the Google voice app and grooveIp and have been making and receiving calls just fine. My issue is having a number I can use to complete the Google voice app on my phone. The app wants to send me a confirmation text and since I have no service it cant. So now my question is how do I use SIPDroid to do that??

By the way if I wasn't clear - I'm only trying to get google voice fully on the phone so i can text over wifi too. If there's an easier way I'm all ears.
I used my home phone number to set up google voice(it is a vonage number now that I ported to them from my old land line company). I first set up the google voice on my computers and it went smoothly. I then took my EVO 4g (which does not have service) and connectected by wifi to the market and downloaded voice, it kept prompting me for a cell number and I didnt enter one but it did load google voice onto my phone. I then downloaded Sipdroid and used my Google Voice number and it handled everything. I can send and receieve text and can send and recieve calls. A friend did try to send me two picture files via the text messaging that would not come thru. I don't know if there are limitations on what you can send but the normal text messages come thru fine. The phone service works ok but the quality leaves something to be desired. I havent started trying to tweek that yet.

It can be done. I did it to mine. i cant remeber how cause its been a long time. Bit i thought all i did was add another number to gvoice on the computer. Then when it asked for comfermation it made a phone call to the number i had set up to forward it to. U may have to set up another gmail account just so u can get another gvoice number. Then use a number u can receive calls to ass the primary number. I'm gonna see if I can find the link I found the info for and post it for u. Don't be discouraged. It took me a while to figure out how to do it.

Alright I finally got it. It was actually pretty simple, I downloaded the text plus app to get a free number and used that to complete Google voice and voila.

Hi- could you explain in a bit more detail how you got GV to use your Text+ to complete the GV registration? I am trying to do the same exact thing you did, but cannot get GV to "see" my Text+ number. Thanks for any help you can offer...

It's been awhile and I promptly forgot everything but here's what I remember - Text plus lets you send and receive texts for free and lets you receive voice calls for free. As far as I recall GV needs to send you a text? or possibly a voice message. I think I just entered my Text + number as the cell # in GV and it all worked out
