Am I missing out by not rooting?? - Galaxy Tab General

Reason I ask is because...I rooted my EVO now everyday I am in the dev section looking for new roms and kernels. I really don't want to deal with that stress with my Tab...Unless I am missing something that's a must have with root.
Tell me...

I don't want to flash a new rom yet as I just got my Tab on Friday. But I must say, rooting is necessary if you want to take full advantage of the device's capabilities. Barring flashing a custom rom.
Applications like Titanium Backup and Market Enabler require the device to be rooted. And those are just the ones I've installed thus far. I'm sure there are many other useful applications out there which require su access.

Is annoying!

Market Enabler and Root Explorer were the deal breakers for me.

Stress? How can rooting be stressful? If anyting, it'll reduce the stress by allowing your device to function properly.

I try every app for whatever need I have. I.e, tried all the launchers, all the file managers, etc...what kinds of apps are you needing, or what are you interested in? I was thinking just today that I need to start blogging app reviews for power users...

Keep settings, layout etc of stock rom?

Hi all, must have been asked but not sure what to search for so can't find it.
I've been using completely stock up until now and will be rooting once I get my new PC through. So I have all the apps, accounts, settings, layouts etc as I want. Can I backup any of this and restore it properly onto a custom rom?. Most likely will be Paranoid.
Thanks.
You can try to use my backup pro since you're not yet rooted. As far as I know, you can use it without rooting. Probably wit limited functionality. But definitely you cannot get away from restoring some of your settings manually. There's simply no seamless way right now.

Is rooting the Motorola Razr M worth it for me?

I was just curious of the perks that come with the Razr M root versus not rooting. I actually like the new 4.1.1 Jellybean, but am so used to the whole LauncherPro home. I know I won't use LauncherPro unless I really end up hating the stock Jellybean home. Also, people seem to say the amount of custom Roms is scarce at the moment for the "M". That's initially what makes me worry. I guess what I'm asking here, is it worth the risk of bricking my phone? I've rooted my Droid X in the past flawlessly, twice and then bricked it because of a low battery and my own impatience. I rooted my Motorola Atrix as well, but was very unpleased with results, so much so that I didn't even flash a Rom, not only that but everything went down hill from there in terms of productivity, uses and overall what killed it the most for me was the battery life. I'm a noob to the community and all of the facts, but I've definitely rooted before and let's be serious, it's not a hard thing to do. I just want to know if it's worth it? I love total control, productivity and mulitasking (plus the little perks that come with the root such as apps). But do you think rooting this specific phone is something for me? Thank you for your input in advance and sorry if there's already a similar thread, but I tried to make this one stand out a bit.
the only major reason i would suggest root is for directory bind (root app for folder redirection) because internal memory is reflected at sdcard0 and the ext-storage is reflected as sdcard1.
other than that there isn't a real point to it unless you unlimited data and want to tether.
also, titanium backup, one of the main reasons alot of us root, you can get rid of alot of that bloat and also apply some tweaks and stuff if your into it / know how.
Also to remove and/or block annoying ads and to use apps that require root access

Qualcomm BatteryGuru vs. Greenify

Can't sleep tonight so just researching apps this morning. Have you guys or gals used either? Do you recommend one over the other?
BatteryGuru is officially made by Qualcomm so you would expect it to be pretty key to phone optimisation. Also it didn't require root.
Greenify had received many great reviews and the author is constantly updating which is good. Requires root however.
Thanks!

Greenify here and happy
I'm running battery guru and it works quite well, it'll take about 5 days to give you some savings, but it works. I'm way more impressed then I ever though I'd be...

No real reason to be scared to root any more. We have the stock images in case you soft brick, boot loop, etc. I was worried to, but it was an extremely simple and quick root process. You just plug in the phone and your rooted after a couple mouse clicks
Also, I recommend freezing the ota applications in TiBu. Never know when at&t may send an OTA that could patch the boot loader exploit. Better be safe than sorry with this one.
Sorry to drag the thread off topic. Just thought I would throw in my $.02 after your comment on rooting. Best of luck

How does that greenify app work? Say you select all your apps, and then it hibernates them does it wake up when needed or if you get a message or notification?
The app specifically says not to enable apps that have certain notifications such as SMS and whatnot, so I would make sure that you don't do it to apps that you need to be notified.

They will wake up when you open them, then hibernate when you close them. Basically if you use it for all apps expect to not mulitask at all (looking at messages, wont recieve phone calls; looking at Internet, wont recieve SMS)
If you have to use either one you don't know how to save your battery. Get better battery stats and learn what is causing your battery drain. These apps only use battery.

Greenify uses a lot less battery then tons of bad apps running. I like using Facebook app but couldn't careless about the notifications and such. Yes I coukd go in and stop them but not all apps let me (cnet for example) so having a single place to hibernate the apps I dont want running in the background is nice.

To me, that would be a killer feature!
No. You need to be rooted.

Did you get a chance to play with one of these @ BB? I didn't see a lot of bloat or really any honestly. Samsung Retail mode though, no idea what carriers will force.

Correct if you want to uninstall them, but you can "disable" bloat from the applications section in the settings to free up memory and to cut down on unnecessary processes without needing root.
I'm not sure how the US carriers will handle this issue, but all of my carrier-specific apps were uninstallable on my Korean Note 4. Samsung and Google services have been hit-or-miss. But then again, there was specific legislation passed here on this very subject last year.

Like that stupid flip board app.
Sprint has been pretty good about being able to straight uninstall all those useless programs they load once you activate. The rest has to be root uninstalled to remove. I've been using Samsung devices for awhile and most have to be rooted to remove their extra features.
Sent from my SM-G900P using Tapatalk
Can't you just disable them? They'll still take up space but they won't run.
uninstalling some of the applications, especially from google or samsung could break other things seemingly unrelated, so much better way is to freeze them, but you need root. greenify has some option to stop apps from starting on boot up, not 100% sure, but I think it works even without root.
greenify is limited without root, but it is a start.
Does anyone know when the ATT note 3 was able to root?
