[Q] Please Please Help me on the bad reception issues - HD2 General

sorry if I'm posting this again
but please I'm about to rip my precious hd2 to pieces because of the reception issues
see it happens like this
I'm standing INSIDE my home
watching the signal
as it goes from full to half to none to service un available
all of this happens while I'm standing watching my phones signal dangles
and I cant make calls longer than one minute and then the call is dropped
that is also while inside my home
when standing outside
the reception is most of the times fine
but the call quality is below average
there is drop outs and weird sounds
I tried different radios (2.10 and 2.12 and 2.15(stock))
I tried different ROMS (windows 6.5 and 7 and android)
I never dropped the phone
maybe the only thing I did was removing the battery from the phone alot because I was trying to flash android when I first got my phone
please Admins and Experts in this great forum
help me cuz I'm about to go crazy
my phone is a T-Mobile HD2 with a yellow reset button
current ROM : Rafdroid HD2
Current Radio : 2.15
Current state : Hunting for network and draining off the battery
thanks in advance

What was it like on original ROM !
you could try a T-Mobile Radio & matching rilphone.dll or flash newest t-mobile ROM complete with radio & test to see if firmware issue or hardware.
Is reception in/near your home known to be a bit weak ?

Aint the rilphone.dll a windows based file? If so how would that have an affect on android? Im also having a signal drop issue
Sent from my HTC HD2 using XDA App

Well rilphone.dll is used in conjuction with the radio firmware, when in android it will not use the rilphone.dll so could cause issues for some users pending on network ect ect !
You are using droid ROM with Radio package designed for WM,just my thoughts.

thanks for replying
can you please post the links to a stock t-mobile rom and radio and a compatible rilphone.dll?
but I didn't have the chance to test it under the original win mo
but the reception was fine when I first bought it and I was using a non primary sim card in it
so I didn't really notice
but I travelled to another country
and started using it along with another sim from the same carrier in a nokia phone
the nokia gives full 3G coverage
while the HD2 is hunting for the signal
so any thoughts ??

I thought Android ROMs are known to have issues with 3G !? check thread of your ROM as may have info on this.
Have a look in HD2 wicki if you want stock ROM.
I use my HD2 worldwide, Thailand, Singapore, China, Japan, England, USA on Energy ROM (Dinik version) & radio 2.12.50 & reception works normally with 3G available when using SIM on 3G capable networks.
Android is still a bit buggy for some users & to be honest Android does not seem worth the hassle to me as a good WM6.5.x build set up well is far better.

thanks Mister B for the advice
I flashed the latest version of the stock WinMo on my device and it seems like nothing happened
still the buggy reception issues
seems like the antenna inside the device is not sensitive enough to receive proper signal because when I go to the roof of my house the signal is fine
but when I stay inside signal drops and comes back almost regularly
I just cant belive that this is a hardware problem
because since I got my phone I never dropped it
maybe the only thing I did was removing the battery while the phone was on a lot of times....
??? im so confused ???

I would like to add another thing
when I put my fingers on the bottom right corner of the device ( right behind the on off key ) the reception works flawlessly
and as soon as I remove my fingers it goes back the way it was
so this is a hardware problem right?

What was the ROM number & what radio was included in ROM ?
If you have warranty or insurance you could try getting a replacement.
Looking like it could be antena related !

RUU_Leo_S_HTC_WWE_3.14.405.2_Radio_15.42.50.11U_2.15.50.14_LEO_S_Ship
that's the rom installed for now
and I don't have insurance or warranty
I double checked that with htc care
I'm really really sad about this
..........

when i first got it i think it was working fine and i was flashing a bunch of different roms. then like a switch when i installed one random rom "core cell android nand" it had really bad reception.
it doesn't matter what i cant fix it, install or flash, i have crappy reception. i have put different sim cards where the "original phone had good reception" and still no change. i put my sim card in another phone and it has a good signal. i also tested it in a another hd2 and it 1whorked fine.
cant send it in, i bought it off of somebody.

Signal is AWFULL! (When Handled)

I've copied this from the Vodafone (UK) forum - but I don't seem to be the only one with a proble... Any help would be greatly appreciated!
I've had my HD2 for just a few days now and I can honestly say that unless something is sorted soon I won't be using it much longer! I have exactly the same problem in both DT1 and BH20 post codes. Singal is good and strong when the device is left on a desk/table etc... I can have FULL signal but lift the device up and it drops to 3, 2, 1 and then no signal...
I can make perfect phone calls using hands free, but can't even send or recieve a text if I pick the phone up. We're talking less than 24" of movement here so it has to be device related!
Comparing this to the HTC Diamond. The Diamond although showing slightly less signal (2-3bars) is much more stable and non-reactive to being handled.
I'm using the very latest updates with HSDPA/HSUPA disabled.
It would seem that HTC has dropped the ball here.
(HSPL - ROM 1.66)
Vodafone thread - http://forum.vodafone.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=48152&st=0
I replied to your post in the Vodafone forum assuming you were still on the stock 1.43 ROM, but if you are on 1.66 then I am not sure what to suggest as you mentioned that it happens in multiple areas which seem to be a fair way apart and therefore would be on different transmitters (unless you are unfortunate enough to be in several areas all suffering from faulty cell-towers).
I know mine drops a bar when I pick it up but not 2 to 3 and then to no signal...
Maybe you should contact HTC about a replacement? Dont bother with Vodafone as they'll offer you a Blackberry 9700 if they cant fix it...
SOunds faulty to me. There is sometimes a small drop in signal for me when the phoe is cupped in my hand, but not more than 1 bar, usually none.
I'd get on to your provider for a warranty replacement.
Nothing such here. And I'm in a low reception place here, seems it even does better than my previous Kaiser.
Seems that Vodafone is a bit of a crappy network in terms of its compatibility with phones! If it's not text messages staying in the outbox it's data disconnecting/not working and no picture messaging NOW rubbish signal....jeez. I've been on T-Mobile with the HD2 since it arrived in november and haven't had one single problem with texts, data, signal....anything. I've had two different handsets in that time too since I sold the first upgrade.
In all seriousness though I do also have a prototype pro.three (pre-release HD2) and that suffers from low signal/signal dropout so in this instance it seems that you have a faulty unit.
I do hear a lot of moaning Voda users on these forums though which makes me quite likely to steer clear when I get my upgrade in a few weeks.

It doesn't look like its JUST my phone here...
Outside this problem is not half as bad.
Lots of people across the world are having problems with the SMS thing.
Its also not limited to the HD2 handset as I had it on Kaiser when I updated that handset to WM6.5

signal reception seems better (vodafone) however a few including me have an isue of static noise when someone speaks. I have this on 2.07 and 2.08 radios - not sure if its network related. I'm using a custom rom, and have no choise but to use 2.07 or higher, unless i revert back to a previous rom.

If you can flash ROMs try Leo Lite V2.2 WWE with the 2.08.50.08_2 radio.
I'm in a very patchy area and behind solar glass and the above setup gives me signal strength and stability better than any other ROM/radio combo or phone I have ever had. This includes many other HTC and Nokia phones.
I never seem to miss a call now and the SMS problemis gone although I believe that is partly to do with the cooked ROM setup.
Also I can pull in H and 3G signals that I could not before.

Does the ROM actually play any part in this though or is it just the RADIO upgrade? I've just gone over to 2.08 but using the stock HTC 1.66 ROM
have you checked that the battery cover is on correctly? there are to prongs on the inside of it that make it part of the arial

The Rom affects the sms issue (I believe) and my current LeoLite ROM (now 2.3) shows no sms problem and sits well with the radio I mentioned as it unlocks the extra memory.
Addendum
There is a link with ROM and radio through the rilphone.dll that is cooked in to the ROMs.
e.g. The correct rilphone for T-mobileUK will assist in accessing the T-mobile network with the correct protocols required for the services on that network. And same would go for all other operators (who may or may not have their own rilphone file configured to their requirements). I am unaware of any signature that would differentiate between the files, however, it's safe to assume that a rilphone.dll extracted from a stock T-mobileUK ROM would be the appropriate one for their network access.
I haven't seen a lot of experimentation on this although I have tried out various files on the ROMs I have flashed without any real conclusion emerging.
The combination that I mention is just a solid setup that works well for me on my operators network in my location.

[Q] Radio

I'm on the 3 network in Australia and I find my reception is quite poor.
I understand 3's network coverage isn't as amazing as Telstra or Optus, but it is meant to be strong around the CBD, which mine isnt. Other friends on the network using non-htc handsets have perfect reception in places I don't. This leads me to believe it might be my radio. Even when roaming reception will drop out occasionally.
I have Radio-3.22.20.17. Are there any other Australian 3 users here? What radio are you using? How is your reception? Would a 6.35 radio be better? I've searched XDA, Google, etc and couldn't find decent radio information for the Magic, only found some for the Hero.
Thanks,
Anyone able to help?
i don't know much about the radio side of things, but is there anything else that could be affecting your reception?
do you have a cover on your phone?
does reception improve if it's removed?
have you contacted 3 to see if there might be a fault with your phone?
I have a cover, but reception isn't affected with it on or off. I've also had the phone checked and its fine.
I want to test a new radio/rom to see if it improves but I don't want to go back to Android 1.5 and there are no 100% working 2.1 roms, so I'll have to wait.
Are there any threads similar to this one? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=563757
Hi there,
I'm from Australia as well. I used to use the new radio to be able to flash the cursorsense rom and it works great. Inside my office, most of the time I didnt get any reception at all but with the new radio, it did.
i switched back to the old radio to use another rom though. (at that time, rom for the new radio is not that much). at the moment, my mobile phone is roaming
you might want to try the new radio (I believe this takes more space than the old radio as my internal space just disappeared). however be careful with that, i think it's the error in flashing of radio n spl that can cause you to brick your phone.

I ended up trying CursorSense. I hate Sense UI so I removed it, but I didn't notice any signal difference. I also ran Before and After speedtests numerous times and averaged them and the new radio was slower for me
so sorry to hear that...
well, at least i finally found someone from australia using magic and a member of xda as well..
I've not used my Magic on 3, but I can relate to your signal issues on their network. The only contract phone I ever had was with them and I regretted it, call drops and poor signal no matter where I was, I used to work in the stock exchange building, you'd think a phone would have awesome signal there but I'd be stuck on 1-2 bars Sorry to say it, but I think you can blame 3, not your phone.

[Q] which is the best uk radio rom

iv been searching around and cant seem to find which one is best, most of them cause my data connection to fail for a second or two when i connect to opera or is this another issue and not my radio,
any advice would be great

Try the Radio I'm using, it's working pretty well, reception is good, data connection is good, give it a go! But you should really test some out before posting a thread as every reply will be different, it's difficult to say which is the 'best'!
I recently upgraded my radio to 2.15.50.14. Since the upgrade I have noticed an increase in battery life++ and less switching between H/3g/2g. Data connections feel much quicker on HSDPA but this is purely anecdotal as I have no speedtest results to compare.
This is on T-mobile UK.
In my experience a Radio that works really well on one network/Country may not be the best choice on a different network/Country.
It doesn't cost anything to flash a Radio, so experiment away. Read the stickies in the ROMs forum to avoid "Bricking" your HD2.

Where about do you live? I'm about to try your Radio, to see how it goes
How did you get on radio-wise?
I am on tmobile in the uk.
On recent radios ( not tried every single one of course) I get my signal dropping down to 4 dots where I know I get good signal. I just flashed one of the 2.10.x radios and its definitely dropping down to4 dots alot less but still not how it used to be. I will try others in the morning.
I was wondering if there is a definitive list of the best radio depending on which provider you're with?
Thanks.
Yans.
HD2 - Best radio for UK Tmobile
I know it's been asked a thousand times before, but does anybody have actual experiences on the HD2 with Android running of SD, and being on Tmobile?
I must agree, 2.12.50.02.2 does work amazingly. I tested a lot before agreeing to this one. And android seems to connect straight away with it installed. I had 2.08, 2.09 & 2.10 before & had to constantly switch my network connections from WCDMA/GSM (HSPA/3G/GSM) to WCDMA only (HSPA/3G) and back again while running android. However, 2.12 never had the problem.
best radio for hd2 & UK Tmobile
I think I have to agree. I have tried lots of them, but am going back to 2.10 and 2.12, and out of the two, 2.12 seems the better. I also had to contstantly turn my hsdap on and off and on again to get connections as it dropped often. What kind of donwload speeds do you average?

[Q] HD2 Losing signal !!!

Hi everyone, i hope i'll find an answer cause i can't understand what's going on with my HD2 !
My hd2 keep losing signal, at first i taught it was a radio related thing, so i flashed a 2.12 radio (was on 2.15.40), but the problem is still there. So i decided to change the rom, cause the problem showed up after i installed a android sense rom (this one) i installed i miui stable rom, and still have it.
Here, i decided that the problem maybe came from my sim card so tried my wife's sim card (same operator) and another sim card (different operator) and it worked just fine, no losing signal at all.
So I've changed my sim card with a new one and the problem still occurs!!!!
Decided to flash a windows phone 7 rom, (just to be sure) and problem still there.
I can't understand what's wrong, i have this problem just with my sim card !!! any help please

Well, the problem can occuor from many sources. Older series of HD2 has a slight problem with reading some of the SIM cards. Did you tried to download and re-flash the radio rom into your hd2 because i have had the same problem with my HD2 as i have had O2 sim card which worked fine and 3G sim did not work well in my phone. I re-flashed the radio rom and it did work and i got the stable and normal signal, also you need to check if you use Android if MAGLDR 1.13 is also installed as this keeps the communication with Android ROM if you use NAND android. So let's try to download and re-flash the latest radio from here: http://www.multiupload.co.uk/QP0IWGY42F and flash it into your HD2 to see first if the problem occours. You can read about flashing your radio here:

If you still stuck with your phone, do not hesitate to PM me and i will find a solution for you.
Hi Iceman,
Thnx for your answer,
i did flash the lastest radio, magdlr is installed of course. Now i'm still on windows phone 7 and still have this problem. As i explained before, i have this problem only with my sim card even if i changed it with a new one. Other sim cards work's fine. However i'll give it a try with the link you give me and see if it changes anything.
Thank you again, and i'll get back to you soon
@ loupio
Please reply if the solution of Iceman helps.
Thanks
Nothing hlped i did every imagining solution but still have the problem
it could be caused by a hw problem (bent pins), if you are not scared to open your phone you should try the solution on this tread:

Please let us know if it worked.
PS: Don't forget to say thanks!
All ready done that but the problem still there :s
I've noticed that when I hold the phone and put my hand over the bottom 2/3rds of the phone (where the antenna is) my signal drops by 2-3 bars. If I am in a location with poor reception and I hold my hand over the antenna, I will lose my signal altogether. Next time you are in a location that you think you should have a signal, but it drops, just hold the phone with your fingertips. Hopefully that will fix it.

I have similar experience and it's so disturbing
I wants to change a new sim card from my operator to eliminate the cause from my old sim card(>5 yrs.), because on my moto k1, the signal seems a little better in same condit.
I have the same issue however it hopefully was solved by the bent pin issue, i just did it now, before i would hold my phone and loose 2-3 bars, now i hold my phone with both hands and cant seem to lose any signal bars.
The problem is not loosing 2 or 3 bars my problem is that it loose's the network and show's 'no service' on the status bar. The network won't comeback till i do a reboot or activate/desactivate airplan mode

[Q] HD2 freezing with mobile data use across multiple ROMS. Any ideas?

So my T-Mobile HD2 is freezing up completely (necessitating battery pull) within a minute or two of turning on and using mobile data. Like the title says, it's happening on both ICS and Gingerbread ROMS.
HSPL 2.08
Radio 2.15.50.14
MAGLDR 1.13
CWM 3.0.0.5
Current ROM: Langthang's HD2 NDT MIUI STABLE VERSION 6.0
(http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1010498)
Previous ROM: NexusHD2-ICS-CM9-HWA_V2.0
(http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1434860)
Both ROMS run well (esp. the current one) except for the mobile data.
I've had the phone for about 16 months. When I first got it in the USA, I didn't trust myself to flash it to Android for the first time, so I had someone else knowledgeable put a Froyo ROM on it. So I can't tell you what version of HSPL he used to flash 2.08 to it. The phone worked fine (except for occasional overheating--it's an HD2, right?), including mobile data. This was in the USA.
Then I moved to Thailand where I didn't use mobile data at all for a long time. Last month I flashed over the old Froyo with the two ROMS (clean install) listed above and have started using mobile data for the first time in Thailand and am now noticing this problem.
More info:
1. Turning mobile data on and not actually using it actively (i.e. just letting whatever few Google things auto-sync in the background) will have it freezing within half an hour. Using it actively will have it freezing in 1-2 minutes.
2. Using a CPU governor (No-frills CPU control) set to the most extreme (“powersave”) keeps it from freezing up the phone for only a little bit longer than having it set to “performance,” so I don’t see the point in using that as a workaround.
I can guess what most people are going to say at this point: dude, you got one of the HD2′s with a hardware overheating problem; sorry, buy a new phone. Well, can’t afford to for a couple months so I’ve been trying to solve it in other ways. And anyway, I’ve stress-tested it with everything but mobile data (heavy use of camera, playing music, videos, and wifi) and no problems. Sure, it sometimes gets warm and might crash very occasionally...but no problems I can't live with.
So why in the name of all that is holy does using mobile data ALWAYS freeze it?
1. Would flashing a different radio conceivably help? Maybe because a different radio would work better with my carrier here in Thailand? (I know, you have to be careful that your radio is compatible with your ROM, else you brick phone. Also, I don't want to flash radio unless I absolutely have to because it's dangerous-ish).
2. Is HSPL version an issue?
3. Could it be my APN settings? Entering the info (minus the DNS stuff; don't know where that goes) from the following site (http://www.flexispy.com/globalapn.htm) stops mobile data from working at all. My carrier is AIS in Thailand.
Anyone who can help me, it's much appreciated. Thanks in advance!
HSPL fine & radio should be ok but was not best for me in asia but not due to overheating of device ...
Do the fridge test, keep it in fridge for 1hr in plastic bag to protect from moisture then activate data & see how it performs, keep it in fridge as much as possible or cool as possible with aircon, fan or ice bed ...
If you get lot longer times before freezing you can be 100% sure it related to heat & mainboard bga failure under heat.
Thailand is very hot and running temps of phones & notebooks are a lot higher here so a weakness is more easily reached ...
As you say you already have experienced overheating I would assume your mainboard is a bit more sensative to heat than most, we have over 20 HD2s in company use & in over 2yrs only 1 handset has had freezing issues & was mainboard BGA issue & new mainboard fixed it.
I would assume the the functioning of data produces more heat in term of cpu, radio stack & battery in a way that heat soaks the device to failure, I would of thought HQ video playback & heavy wifi use could see same fault so some more stress testing may be an idea too.
you on AIS 3G ?
You could try radio in my signature, I have used it in Thailand & asia pacific with great success so maybe worth a try !
I've done a little fridge testing and it does seem able to function on mobile data without freezing up. So obviously my phone's more sensitive than average to overheating (and also because of Thailand's heat), but I still wonder if using a different radio would work better and maybe not push my phone "over the edge."
One reason I still think there might be something wrong with the radio version is that I can never get 3G (only EDGE), even in places where I absolutely KNOW there's coverage. The other reason that makes me suspect the radio is the stress-testing I was talking about before. I tried really hard to make my phone overheat with a lot of processor-intensive stuff and I couldn't.
I really don't want to beat a dead horse, but does anyone else have any opinions or ideas before I mess with flashing a different radio?
P.S. Thanks for the link to your radio, Mister B.

IMO Mr. B is right about overheating motherboard, but couldn't harm anyone to flash another radio version.
Even I'm reservated on this, I wish you GOOD LUCK!
No 3G: Is 3g enabled in phone settings ?, is 3G enabled on your AIS sim card account ?
Trying another radio will do no harm & may help as might using the least resource hungry ROMs ... Android is a power hungry bulk of an OS & most mainboard faults only appear on Android or are worse on android ...
I have same TMOUS HD2 & 3G works fine here so no issues with phone Radios bands as many worry about ...
Mister B,
After writing that huge long post...I might be an idiot.
3g was enabled in my Android settings, but I didn't know it had to be enabled on the sim card. I'll go to a phone shop tomorrow and ask them about it.
Thanks everyone for their advice.
I not know who the idiot but worth checking as I believe if not buying a sim packaged as 3G you do not get 3G without getting account upgrade .
Confirmation either way will be useful ...
Unfortunately AIS website is a very good example on how to have a huge amount of content & over complex account types but absolutely no easy to find useful clear facts ...
Mister B,
1. Went to a phone shop and explained my problem. The guy there told me that he didn't think my phone was compatible with AIS' 3G band...but you have working 3G in Thailand with a T-Mobile HD2. Is your carrier TOT Mobile? Xda won't let me post outside links yet because I'm new, but I looked up the specs on the T-Mobile HD2 and on Thailand's mobile phone bands and it looks like the only carrier the T-Mobile HD2 can use 3g on is TOT Mobile (only carrier with either a 1700 or 2100 band).
2. Also, when I first got my SIM card here last year, I got a regular one, not a 3G one. The way I signed up for 3G was just by looking up and texting a code to AIS to subscribe to 3G service. I thought that was all I had to do. It seemed to work, except for only being able to get 2G. (I'm in Chiang Mai, and I know AIS has good 3G coverage here; I've experimented using my phone all over the city, but no 3G). So it looks like you're right in your last post about needing a 3G SIM card or an account upgrade.
Thanks again for your all your help. Would you mind confirming that your carrier is actually TOT Mobile? It would help me troubleshoot.
I use TOT for 3G (iKool) & DTAC for 2G Edge.
I thought AIS had license for 2100MHz 3G but if on 900MHz then will not work on AIS until upgrade there network.
Thailands 3G is a bit of a bodge effort until licensing is approved.
I would assume your current sim is not at fault & if you activated 3G via sms code it should be 3G active & just the current band being the limitation ...
How I wish 3 network would come to Thailand, their HK network is superb ...
