XDA/Samsung - Epic 4G General

Hello Guys,
My name is John, I recently became the social media analyst at Samsung mobile. I wanted to start opening the lines of communication between XDA and Samsung. First I wanted to say I have noticed your work on our devices on the XDA forums. I think you guys do an outstanding job, I myself am a developer for mobile devices. So let’s get down to business, we’re going to be in Austin from March 10-15 for the SXSW(south by southwest http://sxsw.com/convention). I was wondering if any of you guys are going so that we could meet up and share a couple of ideas I have. I am looking forward to meeting some of you GREAT developers!
Thanks in advance,

Welcome! I'm curious to know what a "social media analyst" does.

Hi John. I'm surprised this thread isn't a little more lively.

Perhaps everyone is waiting to see who will be the first to ask him about the Froyo update!

Hey SamsungJohn, could you please tell Samsung to make a device like the Xperia Play?

Sounds like he gets paid to stalk people on Facebook! I want a job like that! Oh wait, I kind of get to do that already except my employer doesn't know about it. In all seriousness there needs to be more communication between manufacturers and developers and even users. So many times it seems like someone who is sitting in an office disconnected from the world is the one making decisions. I hope this does become a positive thing and not just some PR BS that one of those people sitting in that isolated offices came up with to try and quiet down the natives because the have became restless and the shouts are starting to be heard inside the palace walls. Time will tell.
Welcome!

lol I'm tempted, but I don't want to get flamed haha.
Anyway, welcome John! It's good to know that we can get somewhat of a direct communication toward Samsung because this community does have a lot to offer (and a lot of complaining).
Hope we can help.

I might get flamed for this, but I think this post would actually be better off in the Development forum. I don't think a lot of the developers spend time reading general because of all the drama and arguing that tends to go on here. Maybe a mod can make a judgment call and move it over there.

Hey where is the froyo source john? I had to ask.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App

Well, if you are really the social media analyst, let me sum up what social media should have told you already.
-We want greater communication from Samsung/Sprint with regards to updates. We don't need solid dates, but we would like to know that you are working on it and a general idea where/what is going on.
-We would like for you to upgrade our phones to Froyo and then to Gingerbread.
-We would like for you to enable this:http://www.engadget.com/2011/02/10/immersions-motiv-development-platform-integrates-haptics-into-a/
since our phones are capable of it but do not currently have the software needed.
That pretty much sums up everything. We know you aren't going to dropping Touch Wiz. We know you aren't going to be porting Honeycomb to our devices. We just want greater communication and for Samsung to start treating this phone as if they actually thought it was important to them.

Hi John, Lets get down to buisness...... We need the source code for the modem, without that there is no buisness here. Thankyou

Stalker
Lol no I'm not a stalker! As I said before I am a developer as well. To summarize, a Social Media Analyst exist for the customer. So, me being a developer I have an understanding of our devices in and out; From the Social Media side, i have a feel for the customer. That's why I'm here to establish a partnership with you guys!

Why should it be?
People for the most part, at least those that post on the various forums out there, don't really care anymore for Samsung than they do for Sprint at the moment for the lack of care on putting out updates to the Epic 4g. Sure an official Froyo update would be nice, but most Epic 4g owners have given up hope and aren't holding their breath for any update. Thank you Samsung, and Sprint!

So you understand that the biggest thing we need is access to the kernel source code?
Good, now go tell your boss, and his/her boss.
Tell them that they need to do whatever is necessary to get this released.
They are generating a whole lot of angry customers because of their total lack of support.
We've had some decent advancements despite not having source code.
The title of this thread explains it.
ps-- I do have my reservations as to whether or not you actually work for Samsung.

Partnership
I am the real deal, I don't mind posting my badge or something that would establish credibility. I know you guys have a lot of questions for me about updates. We will get to that in a bit. My main purpose today is to let you know that I have been watching your work and i must say it is great. I want to establish a partnership with you guys!

John can u at least respond to questions honestly about a froyo or gingerbread update for the epic? you and the rest of the samsng team on twitter cannot provide us with anyting but "asap" , "will tweet more as soon as we know".

My suggestion for you to get more attention to this partnership with XDA is to look in the Development section for the Epic and Private Message those who make the ROMs.

First things first.. It would be nice if you guys made a roadmap for stuff under development for our phone. At the moment, we have no idea which bugs are getting fixed or when. And we have no idea what's being worked on. We don't need a accurate timeframe, simply an indication of what's being worked on
Even better, track the serial numbers/IMEI of the phones, and allow each owner to vote on where development should be targeted (such as what Dune HD does). You could even make an application on the Samsung store to let us vote directly on the phones (which might make it even better).
I wont be there in Austin (too far), but I think what I have mentioned is important, because Samsung tech support is unresponsive and horrible (when you send them a bug by email, you NEVER get a response). However, by at least implementing a voting feature, poor tech support suddenly becomes less relevant.
I have a simple suggestion. Samsung are really ontop when it comes to hardware but we haven't seen any advancement in battery technology. Perhaps, as well as focusing on samoled screens power saving prowess, we could address where we are on the battery side of things. So many features require a modern battery.

Let's not turn this thread into a laundry list of things we want from Samsung. That's not the point and it'll just spiral out of control.
I think that this is a big and important step from Samsung, which they should have done earlier, to be present instead of being silent all the time.
It's for sure that there is brilliant developers at XDA that has done some excellent work, imagine how much they could have done if there someone they could get answers from when the questions do present them self.
Is this a joke or somthing ?

Hey John, first of all welcome here !
I this this is very interesting you come! Look, you're page 12 of the the Open Source strategy I shared with Samsung Korea
http://bit.ly/hNJ38m
Hehe I don't know if this is coincidence or consequence, but it sure demonstrate a lot of common interest, and is an excellent news for Samsung and XDA developers !
John and you guys what think of my document now made public?
PS: does your initiative comes from Korea or you didn't shared yet? I must tell you about a few people there
It's great to see Samsung getting involved here. I hope this is not just for PR purposes, Samsung and the customers would get huge benefits if you work together with the developers here.
For a start, I recommend you take a good look into the work that members Supercurio and Hardcore on this forum have done, and work on implementing them into your own firmware.
The difference the 3rd party firmware on the Galaxy S makes is huge. It's faster, the screen looks sharper and better, and the new sound drivers they have worked on are brilliant. The two members I mentioned seem to be the main ones contributing to this.
How about not fragmenting Android and talking to the devs about the best way to allow them access to all the firmware and drivers that are currently not open sourced? (NDA for select devs maybe?)
This would give you all the love you require form the Members here

AT&T Webcast about Atrix Dev Mar 29 @ 11AM PST

Hey everyone, being as this is a webcast about Android Development I'm not sure if it belongs here or in "General" so Mods please move it if you think it doesn't belong.
Anyway, lets get on the AT&T webcast tomorrow and bug them about bootloader access, you do have to register to participate but it's easy enough. It begins at 11AM PST and says it is an hour long. You need Microsoft Office Live Meeting (or you could call in) but it's free to download.
http://developer.att.com/developer/forward.jsp?passedItemId=5300338
I fully realize that this may be a futile action but in my experience persistence pays off and I'm not done bothering them quite yet, maybe 6 months down the road if they still aren't doing anything for us I'll give, but not yet!
Aside: I'm assuming that since this uses full featured meeting software there will be an opportunity to ask questions.
Awesome! Yes, please do! It worked for HSUPA, it is worth a shot.
...why would you bug AT&T about a Motorola device? Waste of effort.

Because AT&T is behind 99pct of the problems with the Atrix:
- No Side Loading - AT&T
- Reduced Speeds - AT&T
- No Root Access - AT&T
Motorola made it pretty clear pre-release they wanted to open up the bootloader, AT&T obviously shut that down.
maybe they will give us the key for the bootloader, probably not, however its a good place to voice our concern

I doubt it. I asked in their MotoDev forum.
http://community.developer.motorola...trix-App-summit-on-March-29th-2011/td-p/12350
I'm not sure if it would actually do us any good, but I mean i guess it would be worth a try. Who is all gunna be the conference tomorrow??
I think (When it comes to their "bootloader solution") what they meant to say was "We do what we think is right when it comes to working with devs and customers, and will continue to do so in the future". And, what everyone took that to mean was "THEY ARE GONNA UNLOCK THE BOOTLOADER FOR US". I'm not saying I agree AT ALL, I just sometimes try to look at it from both sides.
I definitely want this thing unlocked, but I'm not counting on Moto to do too much about it. Not to say opinions shouldn't be voiced!
No one should be blaming ATT for the locked bootloader. Motorola's Droids (except for OG Droid) all have been locked down and they are on Verizon's network. Feel free to blame ATT for upload speeds, fake 4G, no sideloading, global warming, etc...
The Motorola employee that's going to be there is an application developer. He's unlikely to know anything about, much less have an answer for, anything about the bootloader. Harassing employees makes the entire community look bad and childish. If you have a REAL problem with it, other than bandwagon hatred for something a lot of you clearly don't understand, follow the appropriate channels. Lawyer up and file a formal complaint. Harassing them over the internet won't get you anywhere. If you REALLY believe that it's changed anything so far, I'm sorry you're that ignorant.
All the whining and harassing got nowhere, but when a thought out, well written petition was put into place and formal requests were made, look what happened: Motorola released their source. They didn't do it to "appease the masses", or to "shut us up." They did it because the proper channels were followed and they honored that. You have to understand that the amount of people who want the bootloader unlocked is a very, VERY small portion of their total userbase. It's entirely ignorant to claim that everyone wants this. Motorola isn't some evil overlord who wants their users to hate them. They're a business. Do you honestly think they'll care if a few hundred users out of the hundreds of thousands they have leave over the bootloader being locked? Unlikely. They've recognized the issue, and have announced they will have a solution for developers soon, which is more than they're even obligated to do in the first place. They don't owe you anything, having such an entitled attitude is hurtful to the entire process. Be patient.
I mean no disrespect to anyone in particular, so please, be respectful and mature of the situation. If you don't like it, that's fine, voice your opinion respectfully.
I second Ririal. Those two that are going to be presenting tomorrow are evangelists, and are going to be pretty in the dark about the situation.
I think the chat will be very interesting. Devs being there should be good for a prediction on where Moto plans to take the Atrix... wonder if we can ask questions in a round about way to see if they slip on how they unlock the bootloader to develop on the phone... lol yea I know wishful thinking this isn't a cartoon or movie lol but one can dream... I'll try and make the chat and see if I can record it for you guys

Its common with half the people that unlocked the Atrix.
I have a meeting tomorrow and can't participate in the webcast.
However, would somebody _please_ tell them that there are companies out there who really want to develop applications for the webtop.
I have the go-ahead at work to port our primary Linux/X Windows application to the webtop on the Atrix, but cannot move forward so long as hacking/rooting the device is necessary. We can only develop using officially authorized channels.
Thanks in advance for anyone who can bring this up to them.

Agreed Ririal.
The petition I've started doesn't actually complain about anything, it asks for an announcement at the very least. Just something for Developers to be hopeful for. It also just requests an option for Developers not for everyone.
We are working very hard to follow the right channels on the topic and generate positive support to show Motorola that there is an enthusiastic user-base out there.

Absolutely. I saw your petition and have signed it. I'd love to see them, at the very least, give us an answer. We may not like it, but at least we'd have one instead of empty promises right now. No need to get upset about it, though

THIS THIS
Being able to create/load webtop apps would be an awesome feature that would turn the webtop from an interesting sideshow to a must-have.
I am hesitant to spend anything on the lapdock because I don't think it would be much more useful than the phone itself. If I could throw OpenOffice down on there or something using apt-get then I would totally buy it.
I understand that Moto might want to control the user experience, as nobody is going to be doing any high-powered computation or gaming on it, but third-party apps would be really neat.

Petition for Microsoft to Intervene and Help

Folks, please tweet the following for MS to interfere and help us to fix the Dvp issues.
" @WinPhoneSupport Can Microsoft interfere and help #dellvenuepro owners for a wifi issue and freeze fix? #WP7 experience is ruined by #DVP "
Efjay's request:
" @dell ignores & fails to mention t-mobile #dellvenuepro users (victims) problems, has time to tout at&t version. @microsoft help us! #wp7 "

Include @FCC and @MichaelDell also while tweeting.
Sent from my Venue Pro using XDA Windows Phone 7 App
Pls retweet this as well: https://twitter.com/#!/efjay01/status/71731138271510528
Retweeted both
I actually sent Mr. Steve Ballmer an email last night and was contacted by Microsoft Support today via email. I believe that the only way anything is going to happen will be directly through Microsoft intervention.

Could you provide his email?. So we can have the maximum # of folks petitioning him and WP7 via various channels. If you think if more people writing to him will ruin it, then no need to share.
Give me a couple of days to see if anything materializes. If I get the run around then I will post it.

muy bien!
hopefully the problem is going to be axed or a loud enough noise will be made...
Guys, bring @FCC also into picture when tweeting.
Has anyone tried to add @tmonews in their tweets? or @tmobile or anything of the like? Tmonews is pretty good about responding to fans / concerned customers...they are pretty known (at least with tmobile for sure) and therefore they could broadcast the problem or so...idk , just an idea...

Nice idea but android rules on tmonews. Their WP7 forums are deserted, any post that even hints at being pro-WP7 is invaded by android lovers bashing the OS, so I doubt you will get much help from that site. T-Mobile also couldnt care less, in fact from what I've heard all carriers are just paying lip service in their support of WP7, the truth is in their stores where store reps are free to bash WP7 and actively steer people away to other platforms. As we saw with verizon, if a carrier is behind an OS it shows all through their company, from store reps to execs and we are not seeing that happening for WP7.
Can sometime tip TMONews?. I tried for the past few days and the page is constantly loading and fails to send.
Interesting in today's WP Mango event - Dell is not mentioned as Hardware partner in the slide they presented. Just Kick Dell out of the arena. They are actually a scum and ruining the WP7 ecosystem.
Edit: Engadget highlights it - http://www.engadget.com/2011/05/24/dell-curiously-missing-from-windows-phone-mango-hardware-partn/

I hope they get kicked out as well, absolutely disgraceful treatment of their customers and dont deserve to be in the consumer business at all.
Engadget is filtering my comment there when i linked to the WMP article.
We will be screwed

If Dell is pulling out of the phone business, which would be very likely, since they didn't anticipate having to pour so much money over customer service, then those of us who bought the Venue Pro get screwed unless someone files a class-action suit against Dell to refund our purchases.

Mike Reid May Have Passed Away

Hi all, I was working with Mike Reid on his Android Auto work. I was talking to him up to the day he went to hospital.
Unfortunately, it appears he has passed away. I asked a private investigator to try and contact him - see what hospital is at. We unfortunately found a death record matching his region of Canada.
I'd love to be wrong, but it appears he has passed. The death record matched up to about a week or two after he entered hospital.
My team is continuing his Android Auto work by starting the OpenHU project. We've set up a $10,000 bounty - as Google just broke his app over there with changes to GMS: http://console.com.co/openhu
Saw people asking about this, felt I should share over here on Mike's other projects.

Terrible news. But thank you so much on behalf of all of us for sharing it.
Mike had a young family, so I hope somehow we can get a donation account set up for them. I don't think any of us really know the dedication and hours Mike put in to his work, a true labour of love for so little reward. He had so much to contribute. It's still my favourite app of all time. Genius.
God bless him and his family. Wherever they may be.
That's sad to hear - each dead person means relatives left behind, sometimes with insecurities about the financial future.
My condolences to Mike's family, relatives and friends if this turns out to be the sad truth.
May he rest in peace.... I'm very sad. Really.
This comes as a shock to me as it feels like we talked just yesterday. Mike was one of the kind person I came across. It's truly a loss. May he rest in peace.

As a radio DXer that loves Android, Mike was my hero! I'm so shocked to hear about his passing. R.I.P. and condolenses to his family! His legacy will live on!
