Androidify 720p - a simple drag and drop Batch file to convert 720p for Android - HD2 Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting and Genera

I got bored and wanted to investigate what 720p could play on Android/HD2. Most of the tv episodes I've tried have played fine, but one that hasn't used 8 reference frames, the working ones are all 5.
So here's a little batch script to help you get 720p MKVs you might have playing on your HD2 (I expect it should work fine for other devices too). It converts the audio to AAC, leaves the video as it is, and puts it in a mp4 container for android compatibility.
I wanted it to be as simple as dropping the mkv onto the batch file and that was it, but unfortunately MP4Box can't do FPS detection and I wanted some flexibility with audio tracks and subtitles.
Instructions:
Unzip
Download Nero AAC from their site and put neroAacEnc.exe in the tools folder (it's free but against their license to redistribute it)
Drag a 720p mkv onto the androidify batch file
Enter the FPS, most things will probably be 23.976 (it will show 24/1.001 up the top)
Enter the number of the audio track you want
Enter N if you don't have/want to extract subtitles, and anything else if you do
If you're extracting subtitles enter the track number for the subtitles
It will now encode the audio, then mux it into an mp4 which will be saved to the same location as the file you dropped onto the batch and the name will have .android.mp4 appended to the end
It also cleans up the temporary files so you don't have to worry about that
I can't guarantee all videos will play, and you'll have to use a ROM with 720p playback support (I'm using pongsters HyperDroidGBX).

mp4 plays but no audio

Now I've read a lot here and I've tried Quicktime 6, mpegable ds decoder and 3ivx directshow filters.
They all work more or less (i like 3ivx best), but NONE of them plays the audio.
However the camera application on the ppc can playback video and audio.
What the hell is this? And I dont like Motion JPEG avi cause it's too big.
Converting also seems to be no option: I tried Riverpast Video Cleaner and a heavily upgraded virtual dub mod, but they can't even read the video. Quicktime Pro 6 can at least import the video, but no audio again.
Any ideas?
If someone wants to do more research, here are two good sites concerning mp4 players:
http://www.audiocoding.com/wiki/index.php?page=Software+Audio+Players+for+Windows
http://www.rarewares.org/
I've now tried WinMPG Video Convert and the Philips Platform4 Player - only video, as always.
I suppose the audio codec used is not the mp4 AAC LC (low complexity) codec because that's the most common one which can be played back by any mp4 player.
btw, mp4UI shows me a video and a audio stream (like most othre applications), but I can only export the video file and there is no information on the audio codec used, seems to be unknow to any program.
I tried several recorded mp4 files, always the same, and they DO playback video+audio on the ppc.
I'm sticking with MJPEG Avi
That's about 100 kB/s so I can hardly record more than 5 min. But hey who needs to? At least it can be converted by quicktime uncompressed avi export in no time, and then encoded to whatever you want.
More annoying is the fact that I need to remember getting the file off the pocket pc pretty soon because otherwise I will run out of space. I'd prefer taking a series of snapshots and carrying them around with me.
Well copying the file via USB will take almost as long as the video duration is, and a storage card can't be used because it decreases the recording frame rate significantly.
Motion MJPEG also seems to catch more redundant frames (the same picture in two frames) than mp4, but it's still okay.
cant you just record to your device and then copy the recording to your sd card manualy ?
Yes I thought of that, it would approximately take the same time as the video duration is. If you really need to do another recording while on the go, you can do that to free your memory.
btw, I chose divx5 250 kbit CBR + mp3 in virtual dub, only took a few seconds to encode a minute and now I've got a file that can be played back equally well on both machines. I'm using beta player for pocketpc, and it plays fine in fullscreen using the ati imageon chipset. File size is comparable to choosing the mp4 format in the first place.
It works now
mp4 video+audio works with quicktime!! hooray!!
Quicktime always told me it couldn't find the software needed on the server.
But when I opened the mp4 file today, the automatic download of the audio codec succeded.
Even with disabled firewall qt couldn't download the software before. Strange.
And I can export it to uncompressed avi if I need to edit the file with other programs.

Divx files and such

Are there playable on a htz wizard (gp3) phone if yes what software and does it run stable?
Ciao
Player: i use DivX Mobile Player, downloaded directly from divx.com. quite stable, fast and easy user interface
Files: any divx can be just copied on the memory card and played.
Hint: Since the mobile would have to convert using the processor the dimensions of the output i suggest (OPTIONAL) to use VirtualDub to downgrade the movies to 320x240.
This weekend on the airplane i was looking at the last dexter episode and was quite smooth and clear. Also downgraded the file was quite small (40mb).
If you need help in finding the proper conversion settings with virtualdub (that can work also in batch mode) just send me a line.
Thank you for your input. Is it also possible to play files like mkvs and such. I am a anime fan myself and I want to be able to download a episode and easily watch is. Also send me that bath line if possible or post it so that the other users can too
No problem
The Matroska files are containers. Often the stream is already encoded in DivX format. I'll D/L one anyway and give it a try on my palm with DivX original player and let you know.
The other possibility is to use CorePlayer Mobile, that natively can play it. But is $25
Of course if you want to scale down the file and being able to share it more easly there is a VirtualDub distribution that does also MKV to DivX conversion, is virtualdubmod.
I am thinking to write in the weekend a complete guide for the "put your movies on the palm" item to share it. Both the GUI and the command line (batchable) process.
I'll do it before upgrading my WM5 rom

How to play WMV

I have been trying for a week to get WMV files to play on my Xoom. I have tried Rockplayer, Moboplayer, and vital player but none of them will play these files. I have even tried converting the files to mp4 but that takes the file size from 8 mb to 160 mb. These files are training videos that I really need to have on my Xoom so I can study while I am traveling. Can anyone please help me out?
Handbrake will convert WMV to MP4. It can be as simple as
handbrake -i infile.wmv -o outfile.mp4
(Sorry, I only use the CLI version, but GUI version should be similar.)
WMV is a container like AVI, and the actual MS codec will vary. Some MS codecs aren't well supported, and may cause issues.
Use mobo player v6. I use that on my xoom and it plays WMV files with no issues.
I have tried Moboplayer v6 but all it does is open a screen for a second then goes back to the file list. Does handbrake not increase the size of the file?
>Does handbrake not increase the size of the file?
It depends. However, H.264 is an efficient codec. If resultant size is >150% of original, conversion is bad.
If WMVs are from commercial source, they may have DRM. Can't convert DRM'ed media, nor can they be played on Android currently.
Just use Total Video Converter..then it gives you options of Low,Normal or High settings..the lower the setting the smaller the resulting file size will be.I've done tons of WMV's with it.

[Q] Windows Media video?

Can I do a modification to enable it after it's rooted?
I tried to play .wmv files with floor model but I have no luck.
I have a lot of ripped DVDs in .mp4 (480p) format, but I also have several .wmv files downloaded. The size will drastically increase if I re-encode to .mp4 without degrading quality.
i think its in /etc/media_profiles.xml in bottom of file, change to "yes" and save back.
remember to have system r/w
MKV
You can attempt to convert the files to MKV.
The system by default does not play back this file source but there is a player called Mobo Player available on the market.
I have done a few mp4 720p conversions to mkv 720p and I am pleased to say they worked while not being to to big (average size is 1-2gigs per 1.5hrs)
I have read reports that Diceplayer handles mkv files. You might want to give that a try.

Lagfree playback of .MOV files

Sorry to start another one of these threads but after hours of searches on xda and google I want to know what my best route is for playback of .MOV files.
I have a Contour HD helmet cam that captures video 720P 60fps. It's only format choice is .MOV. On the a500 I have tried all the major video players and codec packs but what I get is super slow playback or no video playback. What I have been doing is transcoding the files using the Handbreak 720 baseline preset and that works pretty well 80% of the time. Sometimes the files are unplayable (not sure why).
My goal is to be able to take the card out of the cam and put it into the a500 and review my files without transcoding. If this isn't possible I will just continue to use my netbook for reviewing the files while I am away from home. Ideas? Thanks
According to this,
http://helmetcameracentral.com/2009/04/27/vholdr-contourhd-the-worlds-first-hd-wearable-camcorder/
the ContourHD does either 720p @29.97, or 480p @59.94. Video uses Main profile. The sample 720p clip uses a 5.6Mb/s bitrate, the 480p uses 3.3Mb/s. Both use 64Kbs mono AAC. All are within the stock player's capability.
No need to transcode, just a remux to MP4 container. Try the below,
"Use MPEG Streamclip (http://www.squared5.com/) - Open MOV file and Save as - change file type to MP4."
Thanks for the response. I will try the link you provided and a simple renaming of the file to .MP4 also. It's funny because the first time I tried to play a file on the a500 from the Contour I swear it played flawlessly but now they all play in super slow motion.
Update:
Ok, that worked and was pretty fast on my work desktop (older dual core). I am still hoping for a non converting/re-coding solution that I can use in the field. I was hoping to review videos while camping using the a500.
