Discoloration on the back panel - Galaxy Tab General

After a week of using a cheapo leather case I pulled my SGT out and found that the back panel (white) edges have dark splotches on them, almost like its been placed over a flame. Tried rubbing it off with all sorts of stuff but it just wont come off. My wife has had an iPhone for 2 years and the white panel on the back still looks new. Quality of the material perhaps? anyone else have this and able to clean it?

More like the cheap leather case of yours tainted the black color onto the back of your tab. I had this kind of case before, but luckily I have a layer of screen protector at the back, even that layer is tainted..It's not the tab, just the cheap casing.

no discoloration here, my tab is naked all the time tho

As a rule, as soon as I get my devices I get them laminated (a good one at that) both front and back. Thr surface on the front is resistant to oily hand marks and the back one well lets just say keeps it shining for a good 6-8 months before I get a new one done. This way selling it is never a problem. Cheers!

I had that problem with my Galaxy Tab and the Samsung leather case that came with it. It seems that the soft fabric they line the inside with rubs off onto the Tab. It's not actually that big of a deal to get off. I took some rubbing alcohol (70% Isopropyl Alcohol), poured it on a cotton ball and used a small amount of pressure. It came right off and my Tab looked brand new.

I am in India, waiting for the free leather case from Samsung. One concern is about the heat,if the back is encased, can the device heat up? Will it affect it adversely ?

I have not experienced any problems with the device heating up while in the case. To be perfectly honest, the only time I have even felt the device get slightly warm is when I'm charging it via the wall charger. Even then, it doesn't get that warm. If you're worried though, you can always charge the device outside of the case. While you're using it though, you won't have to worry about it overheating in the case.

Put on an invisishield before you put it in the case. There are a few companies that sell then online for a cheap price.

I still can't get it off, anyway I ditched the case and made one myself instead. You can find it in the SGT accessories forum

I had/have the same problem from a black cowhide case I got from acceport.com - unsightly black blotches on the white back. I had a go at the firm that sold me the case but, naturally, have had no reply. The back almost looks new now after plenty of polishing with an almost daily cleaning and polishing with an all-purpose cleaner I have seen many of the phone shops here in Thailand use to clean telephone screens, etc. Still it will never look like new - it will always have some visible signs of the staining.

Not that my reply is helpful to your situation but it's interesting that each US carrier chose their own different design for the back. AT&T definitely chose wisely with their matte carbon fiber styling. I was in a T-Mobile store this weekend looking at their Tab and that glossy black style is a terrible finger print magnet and now I am reading that the white can discolor. Way to go AT&T, your customer service sucks but someone made a good decision at a terrible company.

same problem here.. black cheap leather... dirty white back, I'll try with alcohol, anyways I buy a new "clip-on" leather that seems look better and it has stand

Screen Protector

Can someone please tell me how to apply the screen protector that comes with the phone as it's just a large piece of clear plastic with no instructions how to physically attach it to the display!
It has a peel away backing which is much thinner than the protector.
I struggled to find how this attached when I got mine and have since put hair and smudges on the sticky backing. Can't wait for the new ones to come online mid May.
It's a sticker that you stick on the screen. How hard is this?!
Just put it on. Work cleanly though, be prepared and do it right the first time.
Bend the corner of the big part slightly and the two parts seperate
The part that goes onto the backing bit is what goes on screen
start from the top and smooth it down
As mentioned, work in a clean/dust free environment!
I've done it many times but even this time round, I got fluff inside - just one spec thinking as it was brand new out of the box, it wouldnt have anything on the screen and so I wouldnt need to clean it !
In removing the protector to clean it out... I ruined it
Got my new Brando one the other day which feels a bit more stronger and durable but still clear so I'll be putting that on later tonight
And now I have a air can with me too so if I get anything in the way, I can blow it out rather than trying to scrape it out
I've now put on the screen protector that came with the phone, but it feels a little thin and flimsy.
I'd like to know people's opinion of other aftermarket brands of protector for this phone as I'd like to get something a bit better quality.
Same thoughts here too
I ordered a pair from HTC direct but I think looking at them now that I have them, they are the same as the originals so I will probably not bother using them
I also have the Brando version now - Not opened yet but I will open and apply it to my phone tomorrow evening - just need a dust-free environment to test it
Apparently, Brando boast they have the best protectors so lets see
It does feel a lot stronger than the original

Did you try this new Brando screen protector, and if so, is it any good?
Also, has anyone else had any experience of after-market screen protectors for this phone?
OK I applied mine today - sorry for the delay but I was just waiting for a time I could be patient !
I ordered it from HTCDirect as they are the only ones that had in stock
Recieved it promptly the next day so Kudos to them on that...also the guy I kept in touch with over email (Carlos if I remember correctly) was great and prompt in my queries.
My main query was - does it have the SAME fitment as the original bundled one.
As you know, the bundled one covers the entire screen including the slider for zoom and camera
The answer was Yes, it was exactly the same fitment.
So when I opened the pack, I was a bit annoyed as it was clearly NOT the same fitment! It's close however, but the top of the camera where on the HTC is all the way round with a small hole for the camera, the Brando one is in a U shape leaving the top bit of the camera open.
OK onto application
Just like all Brando protectors, it is protected by two covers on either end with clear instructions - pull one side BEFORE application and the other AFTER application
Once the dust was off the screen and the original protector...
I did just this - and after several attempts of lining it up - and I note, it is very EXACT in lining up. Slightly out and you will have more black on one side from the screen than the other.
Peeled it off, applied it and smoothed it out - the latter bit was hardly needed as the bubbles just vanished which was great.
At this state, the protector looked smoked a little and not as clear as the original one.
Once I was happy, I peeled the top part - noticed one bubble near the end where the label to peel was, smoothed it out and the protector was as clear as the original one.
First impressions:
It does feel MUCH more durable
It has a very slight and I mean SLIGHT smoked affect in that it is not 100% transparent as the original one but this shows how good it is potentially in strength.
Usage is fine, I can glide over it with my finger and stylus without any issues. The original was a finger print magnet but this seems to not stain with it which is great.
Now the downside....
I think HTCDirect sent me a slightly duff one. It has clearly got markings on the top (once the top layer was off) which look like impact marks.
It is very tiny - almost like what happens to a screen without a protector after 12months
I'm not too fussed but feel a bit cheated. Its no use removing it now as I would have no protector on it during the replacement stages - not to metion I would have to pay to ship back etc.
For now, I am ok with it but if it bugs me, I will throw it away and put the original one on (I ordered 2 extras from Clove who as usual, got it to me instantly, good communications and speed in delivery).
The clove one has no marks at all so thats an option.
Hope this answers some of your questions but to summarise your question
Is it stronger?
Yes it is
Is it worth it?
If you can get one mark free - yes it is
Benefits?
It's re-usable, stronger, washable, and I notice it does not let as much light reflect of it - something I had huge problems with in the sunlight with the original one where I could not see the screen - I am not exaggerating!
Downsides?
Where I got mine from, it has marks on it - something that might just force me to remove it and go back to the original one
Also the camera does not go in a O shape but rather a U shape
OK during the submit button, I realsed the marks and the U shape was bugging me too much
I knew it was a matter of time that gap in the U would get clogged up with dust that would eventually get stuck around the U bit
Removed it and applied the original one I bought from Clove... I have two so if it does wear down, I can replace it
I know from experiance that the original one in the box that I applied lasted fine up till now (a month now since I've had my TD2) so I dont doubt that it will be worn out - May not last as long as Brando's guarantee of it outlasting te device but that's fine given the price of the HTC ones.
Applied it without any dust getting trapped (the main reason I had to buy these and the brando one)
I found those marks were actually dust that was already stuck under the protective layer - whether this is HTCDirects fault or Brando during factory release - who knows but I think as a lesson, I'm staying away from both and sticking to the original stuff.
Hope you make the right decision either way - for now, a brando goes into the bin

damnit, didn't pay enough attention to dust & co...so after i saw that i catched a few dust pieces under it, i've tried to get them out manually - big mistake.
so trashed the original one and waiting for the new brando to put it on. being a former iphone-user, i must admit that the diamond2 screen is pretty sensible to scratches. i thought that i won't be needing any protection, but i already have a few small ones...so a screen protection is a must-have now.
Should have read this first
I should have read this thread before I tried to apply my screen protector. Straight away I had dust underneath the screen protector. Obviously I will now have to order some more protectors but will I be alright using my phone until they arrive? How delicate is the td2 screen?
You'll be fine using it while its there - just be annoying to see the dust specs!
I ordered a pair of the original ones in the end as I was not happy at all with the premium Brando one - the look, feel and visibility was terrible
Reason I ordered 2 of the original ones is I was hearing rumours before the unit was even released that the original HTC one was not durable and would need to be replaced after x amount of months - having had mine for 4-5 months now and with heavy usage, I can report back to say the first protector of the two is still on there - still very clean with no stylus/finger/nail marks and still as durable as it was when I put it first on.

From what other threads are saying the screen should be treated with care. Don't push it hard and avoid impacts. Don't stick the phone in your back pocket! Some people have experienced damaged screens even after a short time.
Shouldnt put any phone in your back pocket!
The number of phones I have to fix or write off because they have had severe pressure on them - ie: sitting on them has increased 5 fold recently.
And lets face it...the countries population are not getting any thinner/smaller!

I know it is not recommended. but I use a small drop of water on the screen before applying the screen, wiping the water as it is squeeze out. The water takes the dust with it.
Hi
I've applied mine that came with the Diamond 2 and after a few attempts you can't see it is there. Ironically I fits so well I almost want to put another screen protector on top of it so it doesn't become damaged and need replacing.
Anyway a tip. Working in a dust free environment is the key. A bathroom is a good place. I have a hepa air filter (for hayfever) and this removes dust really well so run that for a bit which helps.
With all the care in the world dust can get underneath, I had a few specs, and they tend to cause a small bubble as the screen screen protector can't fit flush. I found it very easy to remove them. Have some sticky tape handy, this can be used to lift up the screen protector from the corner. Lift it back up enough to get to the spec of dust, and using another piece of sticky tape dab the spec of dust off the sticky side of the protector, then lay it back down.
Regards
Phil

I know what you mean I made an okay job of the one that came with it. The rubber case I bought of eBay came with one as well and made a right pigs ear of that. I think they need to be applied in a clean room
I've since bought some more off eBay so next time, I'm going to be a lot more careful!
Cheers, Rob.
I got 3 screen protectors with the original phone (2 of them as a gift). The first one was perfect except for a piece of fluff near the middle of the screen. I tried to remove it with a cloth(!!!) and ruined it. So I went for the second one, but at this stage the screen was not clean so I tried to use a microfibre cloth, which made it worse because it leaves even more fluff. I tried to fix it a few times and so now I have fluff inside, plus a bubble (the protector is a bit scratched) plus it doesn't stick properly on most of the sides and around the holes.
I am tempted to use the last one, but if I ruin it once more I am out of them. My biggest problem is how to clean the screen before sticking the protector. Will all the fluff come away when I remove the old protector? How can I clean the screen, knowing that the microfibre leaves fluff? Shall I blow with a can of compressed air?
I find magic tape is great for removing dust spots. Use the backing sheet to gently lift a corner then push the tape underneath to clean screen or protector as needed.
My favourite screen protectors are from Martin Fields. Really tough and easy to apply. Also, they are washable so if you do get a real dust problem you just take it off an run under the tap. Don't try that with the phone though...

Arrrgghh I've scratched it. ALREADY.. :( (the paintwork)

Any tips on touching up the chrome paint work. Dropped it getting out of the car. Scuffed the corners.

well if you want guys who have lots of paints, and who might be able to cover it, then try looking for one of them game workshop places, they have loads of paints in there and other stuff, I dropped a hd cam year ago and I passed by one of these shops and guy in there found a paint to cover it perfect.....just a thought
pray that the phone starts making awful noises and constantly reboots itself.
Then you have a reason to take it to Samsung repair centre.

Case vs NoCase

I was so anxious about dropping\scratching my phone that I bought this huge case from amazon and now I've realized....Using a case just ****ing ruins this phone, it literally becomes a working brick (literally) also its well known that its probably the thinnest phone around, i mean forget the case yo. Anyone else agree?

I agree.
I have had an Evo, and an Evo 3D previously. Both of which I never used a cover/case on.
Then I got a small clip on case for my GSIII, but really dislike the bulkiness that it adds to the phone. I keep toying around with it, taking the case off, then putting it back on. I really am thinking of going caseless. But I do need to find a good screen protector. If I decided to do that.
I'm still debating, every time I buy cases I end up taking it off with in a few days...I already got a screen protector and I think that's all I need.

I need a kickstand, need it. So I have a Case-Mate Pop!. It does make it brick-like when I have the phone in it.
I really really want a case cuz I'm scared to drop it. And my hands get oily and it starts slipping lmao. But then again, a case will cover up its sexiness

You don't have to get a giant otterbox, I have a tpu case and I think the little extra size to the phone is perfect and you get a little more protection from dropping.

Yeah TPU cases are good. Not really big but do give some protection. I'm looking at one of these: www.cruzerlite.com
Should be some Youtube reviews also.
Don't buy the white d30 open button case, gets dirty crazy fast, and cleaning it removes the white finish

I ended up buying one even though I don't like em because the phone seems a bit slippery to me and want to avoid dropping it.
Either way, the tpu case I bought isn't that bulky so I'm ok with it.

I didn't want a case
But then I got the phone and now i'm afraid i'm going to drop it so I bought a slim TPU case and a slim TPU bumper. I may rock it without a case every now and then because this phone feels and looks great.
no case brah.
i got a free one to protect it until i get one of these

This is my solution to the whole thing. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1645709 It focuses more on the screen protection than the case itself, so I'll sum it up here too.
I have found XO skin to be the best pick of wet install protection. Their skins cover any device so perfectly edge to edge that they virtually disappear. Other companies like ZAGG say they have "features" like the "orange peel effect", and that due to the fact that the Galaxy Nexus has a curved screen the shield needs to be smaller to accommodate this and there's nothing they can do. It's bull. They look like crap and it's their way of trying to hide that. XO has a full body protection option that when installed properly offers complete protection from every day nicks dings and short distance fumbles (all you can ask for from a case) that you almost forget is there. And when you do remember you show it off to people, instead of shoving your ZAGG covered phone back in your pocket in embarrassment. It still has a slight rubbery feel under hot heavy use (no innuendo intended), so I put a brand new new cheepo throw away plastic screen protector over it every couple of weeks to solve all my issues. (trust me when I say the XO Skin is completely unnoticeable underneath it. It does NOT look like you have two screen protectors on. Many people didn't believe me) I have been case free for 2 months without a care in the world about it, and my phone still looks wonderful.

I need a case. My hands are small so when I try to reach with my thumb across the screen, the base of my thumb will usually barely touch the screen causing chaos with the touchscreen. Case with raised sides that protect the screen some when dropped keep my thumb from hitting the touchscreen on the sides.
I picked up a otterbox commuter a few days ago it's was a pain to get the phone in and is a bit big but I am happy with the case and screen protector as accidents happen and it's better to protect the phone then pay $600 to replace it.

Thats the point. It replaces the battery cover and adds protection to the screen. Sure it prolly wouldn't be that great for the back but you would have an extra back cover.

Case/Holster & Screen Protectors

Received my Boost Mobile Sharp Aquos Crystal on October 16, 2014 and after a few hours of tinkering,
started shopping for the usual case / holster with belt clip and clear screen protectors. Here are what
I ordered on eBay for my new smartphone . I will promptly post reviews of each upon receipt:
Case / Holster $5.99 <Received 10/20/2014. stitching quality is decent but case is so tight, can hardly get phone in/out & zero padding inside case. Seller admitted size error, refunded.
Next, I ordered this case for $5.99 < This seller DID NOT send me the case as pictures in their eBay listing. They sent me a case that is too small for this phone AND has cutouts that would allow the corners of the phone to be damaged if dropped. Package label says case is for a Samsung phone, not this Sharp phone. I contacted seller, no response in past 24 hours. Ordered from a 2nd ebay seller with same results. My search for a GOOD case/holster continued.
NOVEMBER 6, 2014 UPDATE: Finally found a case/holster that IS THE CORRECT SIZE AND protects the ENTIRE Sharp Aquos Crystal: $7.95 case / holster.
Screen Protectors (pack of 6) for $1.99 < Received in 4 days & perfect fit for this phone. Note: Pull back Tab #2 slightly BEFORE applying to phone or you might not be able to remove it after you iron out the bubbles.
Both prices including free delivery in USA.

Another option if you like the nakedness of the Crystal is TechSkin from Skinomi. I just got mine yesterday and its very eye-catching. Its an adhesive phone skin and screen protector(I got the black carbon fiber). When shopping for it, I was a little apprehensive that it would look cheesy, but its way better than I hoped for. The way its cut comes right up to the chrome and makes it stand out. Its textured too, so its not just some cheap sticker. The good thing about it is you can still use a case. I didn't use the screen protector though; I don't know, my phone just want to show all its glassy glory. I got mine on Amazon for around $12. They also have woods and brushed metals.

That actually looks terrific! I saw that and the other stick-on cases on Amazon you mentioned, but gave no second-thought since the manufacturer pictures looked chintzy and not worth it.
You know, that's what I thought too. But once I got it on, my son walked by on his way to the kitchen and was like "Wow." That's a lot coming from a 19 year old. The quality is way higher than I expected, a real high-end look and feel.
Late as this post is, anyone try the snap-on cases? I bought this one http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00OOGDRVK/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 Clear-Ice brand carbon-fiber snap-on case, sort of like a bumper case on the iPhone 5S. I do like the idea of the sticker thing, but it doesn't appeal to me, personally. I want the device more sealed in.
I'm getting my phone and case on the 10th, so I'll see then. I'm just curious if there's been more exploration than these stickers, or adding a tertiary pocket for your phone.

Actually, I got my phone and the case and am impressed by it. It snaps on with some click, it holds well, and it fits the nature of a bumper case quite well. My real complain stems from it not being an actual carbon fiber cover. It's just this gloss shell with a bunch of black squares gridlocked together to imitate carbon fiber in appearance and nothing more. It's actually more slippery than the naked phone. It protects it, I'll admit. The snaps over the edges actually protrude that little bit out from the screen, giving it the most subtle protection from surfaces.
Disappointingly, I ruined the screen protector in the process. I'll probably either buy a set or look up how to clean one and apply them properly.

Screen Protector
I picked up one of the hdx Zagg screen protectors over the holidays on sale and also got one from a family member as a Christmas present.
I will sell the extra at a cheaper price than what you normally could, if anyone's interested message me for info.
So not to post the same link again, it is located on the first page in one of my posts in this thread.

Fine scratches

Anyone else have very faint surface scratches on the back of their phone? No idea how I got them on this supposedly sturdy phone, but they are there. The phone has been on microfiber resting at all times.
My question is this, anyone think we can polish the back to get light scratches out?

I have this same thing going on, day 3 with the device. They're not that noticable but I know they're there and that's what bugs me. Somewhere I read said it could be scratches in oleophobic coating... IDK. JerryRigEverythings scratch test didn't show any markings until around 8 on the hardness scale.

Yea I saw the video. That's what has me annoyed. Essentials talk of durability is well documented. Add that to the fact that no cases are readily available means you kinda need to just put up with whatever happens. I'm wondering if we can just use a mild polish on the back to alleviate any minor scratches. Mine are almost invisible, but I their presence at all on a phone I baby, bothers me.
I think baking soda and water would do the trick.

I began to see fine scratches on the back of mine within days. I carry it in my front pocket with nothing else. I'm not aware of any rough treatment at all. I feel disappointed as well.
Same problem here ,another thing to be disappointed besides the Camera.
Same here
I was getting some as well. Try the polish out and see if it works? I don't think anyones tried it yet. Also if you don't mind covering the back you can always throw a skin on it. Also makes the phone a lot less slippery
I had quite a few on my first unit. My replacement unit I have none so far but I put a dbrand skin on it the minute I took it out of the box. My first one also had some scratches in the titanium near the charging port and a nick on the side that came from who knows what.

Interesting. Have you complained to customer support about scratches? I wonder what their take is.

I also have fine scratches on the back of mine, with scratches near the USB c port. I also have a replacement supposedly on the way, but for freezing & random reboot issues. What did they replace your phone for? How long did it take for you to get the replacement?
Mine was for bad light bleed and the coating on the titanium coming off. Now I have to exchange again because the one they sent me has no speaker grille.
They sent the replacement next day air after they called to confirm. I had already sent my defective device in. This was before they started doing advanced replacement.
I wish you hadn't said anything.. I have them too
Maybe they could be polished out, but if it scratches this easily they are destined to return.
The phone is not supposed to be scratch proof. I'll be surprised if they'll take your phone back just because of slight scratched. Put it in a sleeve to install vinyl backing for peace of mind.
Mine had scratches from day one... lol Just placed my replacement order yesterday but I don't expect to get it anytime soon. Phone is off and collecting dust til I get the box to return it. They stated they wouldn't have any new devices (hopefully ones w/o much of the hardware issues like the speaker grille) in stock until this week when they emailed me last week.
I ended up getting a replacement from essential and placing a skin on the back to protect from getting these fine scratches. I don't hate it as much as I thought I would, I miss the shiny back but I like not having scratches and finger prints all over the back. Wahoo!

Had mine for over six weeks, and no scratches here.
I have a ton of scratches near the camera and magnet ports. No idea how they got there since I carry my phone in my pocket with nothing else in it. The only thing I could think of would be resting it on it's back on a table and sliding it to pick it up? Odd how it is only around the top part. Fingerprint sensor and below is spotless.

Close to that area are the magnets, magnets attract metal and sand, sand is one of the few things that can scratch glass and ceramic. Sometimes even if we believe or not we have sand in our packets due to daily life. Then we have scratches without knowing where we scratched.

I don't understand people complaining about micro scratches like it's something wrong with the phone? If you live in a place that has sand then you should have some type of protection on your device if you don't want scratches. Sand (silica) is harder than any coating and will scratch any phone. It also can become ubiquitous. One of the persons here literally has a user pic with them on the beach! Why make it Essentials fault when your failure to protect your phone is the issue?
I got my scratches at my corporate office in my cube. Nowhere near beach or anything of that sort. Was just playing with it and setting it up. Anyone who's not using any protection on the back and have been using it regularly saying they don't have any scratches, please share a close up video of your phone's back in nice HD detail close up so we can be in awe of your magical device with no scratches. Be sure to move it around under a bright light too. Lol. Be real people, you're gonna get scratches without a protection, whether it's a skin, case or whatever.
