[T-MOBILE TAB]Can't do anything else if i am on a call. . . - Galaxy Tab General

A question to all specifically those with the t-mobile tab. I am wondering if any if you can use either the internet or maps while on a call? I have noticed that i can not, i loose edge even though i have some bars, see the picture bellow:

Once i end the call i get the Edge symbol back.
Any way to be able to use both? What if i need to look for directions while on a call? The only option i have is to disconnect the call then launch maps, get the directions then call the person back. The same thing if i want to look up something online while on a call.
I had the same issue when i was using my Vibrant, and never got it to work.
Any suggestions, or is this not possible?

As far as I remember, Tmobile has never offered voice + data simultaneously on their 3G network. One of the very very few perks of having the evil AT&T overlords.

No, it's not possible.
EDGE is still 2G, and you can't use 2G data and voice simultaneously.
You need 3G to have voice and data simultaneously, and that currently isn't possible with a T-Mo US Tab.

Dave

thanks, but the previous member stated it can not be done even if running 3g+voice, i have the Vibrant and was never able to do so, if i had full 3g and got a call i would loose the 3g symbol and could not use the internet or google maps only after i ended the call i could.
this is such a bummer but i have dealt with it so far so i guess not that big of a deal.

It shouldn't prevent you from using voice + wifi though, so you could use your Vibrant as a mifi and share it out that way.

that would be an option but then i would be needing 2 devices.

its vice versa, whenever i'm on net mode, message or calls is getting a hard time to get through
been guesing that its the same 2g that causing it, but my colleague getting them just fine using blackberry
is it only android?
is RIM using a different band so voice and data can get side by side?
fyi, all of my colleague only getting 2g too (edge/gprs) coz we're on the same remote area

I find it very hard to believe that TMo US don't support simultaneous voice and data whilst on 3G! It would be pretty retarded if true.
Here's a thread concerning this issue where a Nexus One owner confirms they gets simultaneous voice and data on their phone if they are in 3G coverage.

Dave

That's completely correct. T-Mobile's 3G network allows for both voice and data at the same time. I've had this since my G1 and all my other 3G phones up to and including the myTouch 4G I'm using now. AT&T allows for this as well, while the CDMA networks (Verizon and Sprint) technically could, but haven't sold devices that allow for it that I'm aware of (likely waiting for full 4G rollouts instead).
The problem you're likely having is that, as long as you're on EDGE the data portion WILL drop, and once the IP drops the little E will go with it. It will bring up the data connection again once voice is cleared. This is why long downloads over EDGE can result in getting voicemails on occasion, as the call might not ring through even though you had max bars.

Thank you, I am glad someone had the sense to post the right info. It is annoying when people post information and they have no idea what they are talking about. If we ever get a modem that works with 3g and Voice then YES they will both work at the same time. Even a non 3G ATT phone will NOT be able to do voice/data at the same time. It is simply a limitation of the GSM architecture.

The weird thing is that when i had my Vibrant i was having the same issue, i could have full 3g service but i could not do anything while on a call ex.maps, internet, very strange.
Just hope someone can find a modem that will allow the tab to have full 3g+voice.

That is strange, as my friend's Vibrant works fine doing both in 3G. You've never received an IM or eMail notification during a phone call?

just tested 3g data plus voice call on my vibrant, worked just fine. fast data too...

Technically, even on 2G, the networks can prioritise voice over date, so that if a voice call comes in whilst you're on 2G data, the data will pause to allow the voice call to continues.
However, all the networks that I've ever user don't support this, though I'm sure many do.

Yep, which is why that stands out in my mind as an annoyance. But since I leave the phone alone for the most part while I use my Tab, it isn't much of an issue anymore.

MY\t-mobile.com and does not let me browse the web.
Installed "GScript Lite" and BusyBox --> Extracted modemswitch.zip --> Copy /sdcard/modemswitch/switch.sh to the /sdcard/gscript/ directory--> "Add Script", --> select switch.sh--> saved.
Tried this from GScriptLite: switch
Rotohammer's Modem Switcher
Current modem=yyyyyyy
Flashing files ...
Switching to Phone/2G
The Tab never reboots and it doesn't switches to 3G. It returns back to GScriptLite. Switcher is on Edge --> my browser takes me directly to MY\t-mobile.com and does not let me browse the web. Did I miss something?

For those that don't know what UMA is... and Yea I work for a Wireless Carrier and spelled Wireless wrong.. lol
UMA Overview
Unlicensed Mobile Access (UMA) technology provides access to GSM and GPRS mobile services over unlicensed spectrum technologies, including Bluetooth and 802.11. By deploying UMA technology, service providers can enable subscribers to roam and handover between cellular networks and public and private unlicensed wireless networks using dual-mode mobile handsets. With UMA, subscribers receive a consistent user experience for their mobile voice and data services as they transition between networks.
In order to promote the widespread adoption of UMA technology, a number of leading companies within the wireless industry have jointly developed a set of open specifications. These specifications are available through this Web site, and may be used by vendors and carriers of wireless communications systems and applications to develop and deploy interoperable solutions.
In addition to developing and maintaining the initial specifications, the participating companies are actively working with the 3GPP standards organization to use the specifications as the basis for the development of a formal standard.
How UMA Technology Works
1.A mobile subscriber with a UMA-enabled, dual-mode handset moves within range of an unlicensed wireless network to which the handset is allowed to connect
.
2.Upon connecting, the handset contacts the UMA Network Controller (UNC) over the broadband IP access network to be authenticated and authorized to access GSM voice and GPRS data services via the unlicensed wireless network.
3.If approved, the subscriber’s current location information stored in the core network is updated, and from that point on all mobile voice and data traffic is routed to the handset via the Unlicensed Mobile Access Network (UMAN) rather than the cellular radio access network (RAN).
4.ROAMING: When a UMA-enabled subscriber moves outside the range of an unlicensed wireless network to which they are connected, the UNC and handset facilitate roaming back to the licensed outdoor network. This roaming process is completely transparent to the subscriber.
5.HANDOVER: If a subscriber is on an active GSM voice call or GPRS data session when they come within range (or out of range) of an unlicensed wireless network, that voice call or data session can automatically handover between access networks with no discernable service interruption. Handovers are completely transparent to the subscriber.
Believe it or not I don't think your spamming!! I think this is good information to know. Developing and Hacking is the wrong place for it not matter what the excuse... But it is great information. I wish more carriers had this kind of technology.
Doesn't work right with WM phones. Causes the phone to periodically wake up and hurts the battery life. I've had one for about 8 months and stopped using it after 1 month.

I'm getting a LOT better battery life on my Q9c using the Airave. Before, I was 0-1 bars of service.

Found a potential data unthrottle solution!!?!

First, a little bit about me that lead to how I came across this...
I work in the electronics department of a retail store, and when the days get slow I like to tether my G2 to the wifi enabled tv's and watch netflix with coworkers. I do this on almost a daily basis and burns through A LOT of data.
Of course after a few days I get the text message from T-Mobile after I get through my 5GB of (fake) unlimited data and will be slowed for the remainder of this billing cycle... This normally results in my downstream speeds going to a trickle of 7kb/s as apposed to my uncapped speeds of anywhere from 300kb/s to 1400kb/s.
So I have another job that I work on the days off sometimes and it's running deliveries. I use the navigation app to get to where ever it may be for work and sometimes my GPS doesn't like to locate me right away. When this happens at work, I start to panic (I don't know my way around town for sh*t) and try every solution on hand I can think of. I tried fixing permissions then network operator selections and eventually the GPS will locate me function just fine.
So I have never hit my cap while working my part time job doing deliveries, and have never really used the navigation app until I started working there and this is how I came across this uncapping of my data while trying to fix my gps, I went into wireless & network settings, then mobile networks, and select network operators, it does some searching for a bit then gives me the option for AT&T or T-Mobile, (I always just do select automatically) and after doing this, my data speeds return to normal... like I am still getting downloads at 600kb/s+.
According to the T-mobile "my account" app, I am at 7.26GB for this month.
(I will upload screens in a second for the naysayers)
Something about this network operator selection thing has the ability to unthrottle me everytime I go over my data. Not sure what actually happens behind the screens when I do this method but just thought I'd share in hopes that it may provide some help to others in a possible loop hole to the (fake) unlimited data issue a lot of us run into.
P.S. Noticed that the speedtest app always thinks I'm in Dallas TX every time I do the network operator unthrottle thing, when I actually live in the Chicago IL area.
Wow, this seems like a great find. finally we can maintain full speed over the month. Gonna definitely give this a try once my speed gets throttled. Thanks!
Just for safe measures before people start saying it's not working, I'd like to just make it known that I am currently running on CyanogenMod-7.1.0-RC1-vision and using 2.6.35.13-UmaroV1.06+ kernel. Radio-26.03.02.26_M. Dunno if that affects anything in this department lol.
Also one thing I've noticed and forgot to mention...If I connect to a wifi network, once I have disconnected from it, my speeds are throttled again but doing the operator selection unthrottles it. This is the only thing I've noticed that reactivates the throttle but is still fixed in a matter of minutes.
Ill test this once I finish download battlefield 3 though I dont think Ill hit 5gb once done. Probably need another 1GB or so.
BTW to save data from navigating, you can enable a feature in Google Maps 'labs' to allow caching map data. After enabling it, long press on a location and tell it to cache, it'll then download a 10 square mile radius of that point and save it to your SDcard (you can cache multiple areas). Then it won't cost you data next time you load that map
Anyways, interesting find! I wonder if its because it kinda... re-registers your phone on the network, and you get a new address / spot on the network? Idk... I've only hit my 5gb once and I wasn't capped so I can't really check this often.
My guess is that Tmobile servers learned your usage statistic including your location, amount of data consumed, most connected APNs nearby and usage schedule. They then use those factors to throttle/filter the APN you are connected to the most. But once you "refresh" the apn list or the cache on your phone by searching for network operators, your phone is no longer "blacklisted"
But that is just my theory.

Yeah, we known about this for a while. Same thing happens when you switch apns (wap.voicestream.com for example). It just changes your ip on the network and will last for several hours or until you reboot. Its temporary but works good enough. Too bad my old one doesn't work anymore. Its all controlled server side now.

In the build.prop in /system, with any text editor, you just need to change this:
ro.product.model=HTC Vision
ro.product.brand=vision (or whatever it says here)
to this:
ro.product.model=T-Mobile G2
ro.product.brand=tmobile
That's it. Reboot and it'll work just fine. I change it every time I update ROMs on CM.
The way I understood this: Once Throttled simply navigate to network operator settings and select your standard operator or reset your apn settings and you will at least for a certain limited time have unthrottled data?
At least as far as Berlin, Germany, network operator O2 goes: I cannot confirm that this actually works. (HTC Desire Z, latest Bulletproof MIUI rom).

That's what I've been doing and it works great. Might just be a loop in the T-Mobile networks but I thought I'd share in case it wasn't brought to anyone's attention
Just to be sure I went for the latest nightly and tried again.
Made sure that I got new ip's. But still nothing. I guess that o2 germany simply handles throttling differently.
Thanks for sharing though, would've been nice if it worked.

This didnt work for me. Im using MIUI Bulletproof ROM.
Although, right around the same time this thread was made, I went over the cap and still had full data speeds. It lasted 4-5 days I think.
I hit around 6.5 GB before I was finally throttled and that was around the end of Oct/beginning of Nov.

No Service for a few seconds, happens all the time

Hey everyone, just another thing I'm facing with my Note 4...
Ever since I got my Note 4, it's been having some problems with No Service, so I thought it was my old SIM card (that had to be hacked off into microSIM shape), but since I got it exchanged for a new one it's still dropping into No Service very often, like twenty times in 5 minutes. Then it seems to be fine for a few hours, but then it happens again a few times and so on...
Basic info:
SM-N910F
Stock, unrooted NK4 ROM with NK4 modem as there is no way to not trip KNOX yet.
O2 Czech Republic
In the same places, my S2 never had a single signal drop (No Service)—not sure if these two things are identical?
Questions/thoughts...
Could this be modem related or could it be something with the device itself?
Is there any way to test it?
I mostly notice it on H and H+, not so much (never) on EDGE, 4G coverage is rare in my area, so I can't say exactly.
Factory reset: could it change something in this case? I'm saving it as the penultimate solution, before getting a new one.
Thanks for your help.
I think I found a little bit of correlation between when and where it happens. Not really sure if it happens only when I'm close to some WiFi network, but I just noticed that when I'm in proximity of a WiFi network, the NO SERVICE is very often.
Plus, when I think about it, I haven't noticed it anywhere else, but in WiFi areas. Is the phone trying to tell me to use the WiFi?! Well, I can do that at home but nowhere else as I don't want my packets sniffed more than they already are by the provider...
Seriously, is there any way that WiFi networks could interfere with my phone's signal/service?

Thank you for the reply, I thought that smart switch was meant for transferring data from an old phone to a new one? Or do you mean some different "smart switch"?
look in settings. smart switch moves data from your mobile network to wifi and back.

Yeah, found it, Smart network switch in Wi-Fi settings. I have it unticked. So this shouldn't be affecting me(?) As the No Service happens to me when I'm on mobile data, in Wi-Fi range but my Wi-Fi is off...
no solution yet
I still haven't figured out what's the problem exactly.
But me and my colleague have the same provider, but she's got an S4 and when I had them side-by-side I noticed that both phones dropped to No Service at the same time, but my S2 didn't. The area is fine, signal-wise, there's even a mediocre 4G, but at the time all of them were on H+. And when they "regained consciousness", they were starting from zero signal EDGE back to full H+.
This makes me wonder, as it seems it's got to have something to do with some setting in both phones / SIM cards' setup. Both of them have new SIM cards and both of them did it even with the old ones.
I'm gonna call my provider's tech support to see what they have to say about it.
I am experiencing the same problem here in USA. I bought the phone from Amazon Germany, using it on AT & T network in US. For no reason the phone drops the phone call and goes into " Not registered on network" message. This lasts anywhere from 20 seconds to 5 minutes, then without me doing anything goes back to normal. I was using this phone in Czech republic for a week in January and had no issues.
I was experiencing no service on my Exynos n910u and I ended up reflashing ONLY the modem, and it's fine now.

Hey guys, thanks for the replies.
It seems to me like a modem issue too. I remember that I had to change modem on my S2 in order for H+ to work.
And since I can see there is an issue when changing countries, it would suggest it as possible... However, does flashing modem only trip the Knox counter or something? I can't read through the forums right now, so I'm asking politely here.
Anyway, I isolated the issue to 3G networks, because when I force my phone to be 2G only it never drops, my signal is green and seldom grey. No service never occurs, but as soon as I switch it to 2G/3G/4G or something else that includes 3G, it starts again.

Wanted to thank you for the input, this just suggests that the modem/radio is at fault. Because you relocated to a different area and it doesn't work properly with the bands there.
I had the same problem on my S2, which was unable to connect to 3G until I flashed the modem recommended to me by someone here on xda. But that was almost 4 years ago, I just don't understand why this happens, what's so different that the modem just wouldn't connect, plus the S2 was bought from my provider and it was branded with their bloatware and still, it didn't work.
But here on my N4, it's similar, but it seems to work just fine and then, all of a sudden, you're facing No Service message for a few seconds or minutes, then boom, you're back on.
I spoke with Samsung support today, and I guess they didn't even understand what I was saying. I'm gonna have to visit them and ask around, if they could flash the modem to something more compatible with my area. Can't use the phone like this, that's why I bought it in the first place - I need to be online and as fast as possible. But now, it would seem like I'm better off with my S2

Well, that sucks...
So, I had my phone serviced and they said everything was fine and that it's working the way it should.
Of course it isn't, the second I walked out of there I had a No Service a few times again, I already tried changing the bands only to what my provider has, didn't help at all, switched it back to all available bands. Naturally, I got really pissed. There seem to be only two viable options:
a) flash a different modem, as suggested in a previous post
or
b) get rid of the phone, which I really don't wanna do, but it's really annoying having to resend every second message (often twice), be it SMS or IM, because it drops into No Service...
ad a) I did a search and I was unable to find a modem thread or anything regarding modems for N910F, am I blind or there isn't one? Or am I supposed to extract it myself from a stock ROM file? (I don't even remember how to do that anymore, lol.... I guess there is a guide for that, but again, I haven't found it?! Or is it universal across Samsung devices?)
ad b) I love the phone but this makes me wanna throw it out the window
Thanks for any kind of help! I'm desperate.

Thank you for your reply!
I haven't solved them yet, but it got a lot better when I updated to Lollipop. It's got a different modem (BOC4) and it seems to have improved my situation. So happy I didn't have to throw the phone away after all.
To be clear, it still happens but a lot less since the update, maybe once a week, for a few seconds which I deem acceptable but not ideal.

Nexus 6p no longer works on verizon after using with vodaphone sim card on a trip

Hi all,
My 6p that used to work great on verizon can now no longer make or receive voice calls, even though 4G data works!
I have been using my 6p on a verizon prepaid plan for months, and it has worked flawlessly. I popped a sim into an S4 to activate, then put the sim in the 6p, and everything worked great.
I recently went out of the US for a week. Verizon prepaid doesn't work at all in Europe, so I bought a tourist SIM with some data to be able to use my phone while traveling. Again, this worked great.
When I got home, I put my old verizon sim back in my 6p, expecting to go right back to where I left off. The problem is that can't make or receive any voice calls on the 6p. Whenever I try to make a call, I get a verizon message asking me to enter the 10-digit number again. Incoming calls are going right to voicemail. SMS works fine though, and 4G LTE works fine -- just no voice.
Verizon tech support is no help. They say that if I use the device on anything other than verizon's network, it has been flashed and will never work again fully on the verizon network, which is obviously BS.
I have tried putting the sim card back in an old S4, and voice calls work fine there, so I know it's something with the 6P.
Any ideas on a setting that I might need to change on the 6P to make it work again? The Vodaphone person took my phone for a second and may have made a change or two that I didn't see to the settings? :/
Any help is appreciated! I use this phone for work, and if I can't get this resolved soon then I guess I'll just have to switch to tmobile ASAP.

Dial *#*#4636#*#* and see if your settings match mine in this screen shot.
The format is a little different. I have Verizon Wireless as the current network, but Voice Service says:emergency calls only. Voice Network Type is Unknown.

I'm on Verizon and Every time I use a project fi sim in my Nexus and then go back to the verizon sim...the verizon sim doesn't work any more. I have to get a new sim every time. I think it's just the way Verizon does sim card management on their phones.

Thats where your problems at. At the bottom mine says LTE/CDMA auto prl does yours say the same? If not you need to change it. If that doesn't help you can hit the 3 dot menu on the top right and click on band 6. It's possible your network band was changed. I had this problem after mistakenly changing mine to USA band.
I actually went to verizon and got a new sim and still no luck. Verizon is crazy. I'm about to just switch carriers.

I changed it to LTE/CDMA, but it couldn't find any service at all under that option.
On the three dot menu, weirdly I only have US, Cellular 800, PCS, and Class 10 (800mhz secondary), but no class 6.

It sounds to me like your radio bands were modified. You can try flashing your radio again in fast boot or install a custom ROM like chroma that has a lot of extra bands to choose from. A while back I saw a thread in this section where someone had made a zip you can flash for this same problem also.
I had a similar problem with Sprint. Text and data worked fine but no calls. Might be a CDMA related problem.
Mine was caused by me changing the band the "USA" in the phone info (*#*#4636#*#*) menu. I had no way of getting it back because whatever ROM I flashed I never had the "Auto" band option. The Vodafone guy may have changed your phone's banding to Europe and for some reason it's a pain to change it back. I ended up complaining to Google and they allowed me to RMA the device.
However, I saw this thread later which may help fix your problem. Flash the ROM from that thread and go to the info menu and click "Auto".
Good luck.
Edit: Found another thread here describing the same or similar problem and the above fix worked.

I started having the same problem today, with my wife's 6P and my daughters 5X, it turns out the HD Voice feature from Verizon was my problem, since that was the only thing I had modify before they lost phone call capabilities, I went back to the Verizon website and under "My Products and Apps" you are able to disable or remove that feature, I then rebooted each phone and they are able to make calls again. Hope this helps someone.
Sorry to bump an old thread... I've run into this exact same issue. I've tried the rom in the post above - had lots of errors of services stopping but eventually managed to set it to automatic... nothing helped. I tried another purenexus 6.0 rom and while that works better as far as rom goes, it still doesn't let me place voice data calls.
The only thing that halfway works is enabling HD voice - and VoLTE on the phone. This means I can make phones when and where I have LTE but still nothing over the normal cellular voice network.
Anyone find any way of fixing this?

Is there a working free hot spot apps?

No root won't be a problem if there is a working hot spot app for us unlimited users.

FoxFi used to work with a VPN tunnel... but I don't know now. I use VZW as my ISP, so I pay for tethering.
All the phones I have had are rooted with hot spot carrier check bypass so not having a hot spot will be a no go on this phone.

No big need for an app, the turning on hot spot while signal refreshes method works.....Look up details in the Turbo2 forum.
I can get the signal refresher method to work, but the hotspot shortcut in the notification panel only turns it off for me. It will not turn it on. Any suggestions? I have to queue the hotspot settings then switch to activate from there.

I currently am working with the FCC and the EFF to address this
Below you can read my complaint. I have removed identifying information for the time being but have at this point escalated beyond the FCC. Last night I was contacted by the FCC and we discussed plans for next steps. They have forwarded my complaint to Verizon and I was contacted by Verizon Enterprise Resolutions Team. I spoke with VZW today and had a 45 minute conversation discussing their restriction on the fact that Verizon is treading very close to the 2012 ruling. At this point I am waiting to hear back from Crystal from Verizon's internal team on next steps.
VERIZON WIRELESS - 700MHZ C BLOCK RESTRICTING USERS ABILITY TO UTILIZE OPEN FREQUENCY
On Friday August 19th I purchased a new phone from Verizon Wireless. I was surprised to find out that the applications that I normally use to tether my wireless broadband no longer worked due to a combination of efforts set by Google to patch security holes and Verizon Wireless' modification of the stock rom that was shipped from Motorolla Mobility.
Verizon has modified the stock internal mobile broadband hook in settings and forced it to call a 'Subscription Check' service that requires end users to enroll in a 30$ a month mobile broadband service in addition to their current bill.
While the second part is not new, the first; disabling tethering applications, is.
In 2011 the Free Press filed a complaint with the FCC located here
freepress.net/sites/default/files/fp-legacy/FreePress_CBlock_Complaint.pdf
In this complaint it holds that Verizon Wireless choice and collusion with Google to disable or limit third party tethering apps steering users to their paid server is not only poor business practice but against the fair use of the C block LTE frequency and in the FCC's 2012 ruling found below, they agree.
transition.fcc.gov/Daily_Releases/Daily_Business/2012/db0731/DOC-315501A1.pdf
The settlement of 1.25 million against Verizon not only solidifies fault, but reinforces the necessity to keeping the use of this frequency open to competition for applications and use.
I feel that the current situation that I am facing also affect other end users and is simply a rehash of the 2011 issue.
I have contacted Verizon and have the recorded messages located here:
Call 1 -REMOVED-
Received email response listed here:
-REMOVED-
Call 2 -REMOVED-
Verizon Wireless HQ
Dispute Resolution manager
one Verizon way, VC52S417 Baskin Ridge NJ, 07920-1097
I am looking for advise primarily if I should pursue this issue, if I am off base or if this is something that the FCC has interest in pursuing.
Thanks very much

Method
This is put together from the droid turbo 2 thread. Works for me on unlimited data.
1. Download "Network Signal Refresher Lite By 8JAPPS"
2. Run the app, Hit the refresh button.
3. Pull down notification drawer, pull down again to get to the quick settings tiles
4. Wait until the Sim card icon changes to the completely empty signal bars icon
5. Hit the hotspot button only once, wait a few seconds it will turn on.
It works for me all the time. Posting from a tethered computer as we speak.
The stock wifi hotspot app work for me on cricket , using moto z force

Tether Update
Just got my Moto Z Force today WoW!!! this is one motorola mother ship, anyway while we wait for the sunshine miracle, Tether is great with the PDANet app using Bluetooth, Super fast, not like the unfortunate HTC devices that try the same thing (BT is real slow) on the Z, BT is blazing fast, not much different than the Native Hotspot I used on HTC M9. Hey its free so WTF right?

Do you know if the signal refresher hack still works with the MCOS24.104-35-1-9 latest update?
Yes works after update! I just got a surface rt for work and was trying to find a root for t2 but with no luck but this worked!!! Very awesome! I came across the pull sim card out and out back in with little luck everytime I out card back in hotspot would disable. But this did the trick thank you!
Does this work with the nougat update?
Don't want to upgrade if it means losing hotspot.

I can't get it to work with the Network Refresh method. Shoot.
Just out of curiosity what is everyone using the mobile hotspot for? I never feel the need to use it, maybe I can offer some alternative insight.
I use it for when other people need wifi, doing homework at the park, my 3DS, very useful if you're traveling. Used it for like two years when I lived alone as my home wifi. Used to sell phones in a store that didn't have wifi and used it to backup and restore stuff for customers. Lots of little uses that add up quickly.
