[Q] Italian Sim on a T-Mobile Tab No 3G - Galaxy Tab General

I have flashed my T-Mobile tab and asked T-Mobile for a Sim unlock code and now it works fine with any Sim. I can place calls with the dialer.
My problem is that in Italy, the tab connects to the internet only in Edge, it does not use the UMTS network.
By going to the mobile settings I do not have the "use only 2G" option.
I have GSM/WCDMA automatic on the settings. By typing the 4636 code on the dialer, it seems already well configured.
any solution?
thx

What is your provider? Because if it does not use the 2100mhz frequency for 3g (t-mobile) you will just not be able to ever connect on 3g, it's not a problem of configuration but a radio incompatibility.

In italy 3g is on 2100 and 900mhz. If i read it right T-Mobile uses 1700 and 2100mhz so it shouldn't be a big issue.
However unless you are using a TIM sim, forget about EDGE: GPRS only for all the other mobile operators!
Maybe there is poor 3g cover where you are at the moment? Wind is particularly low on the cover side.

My italian operator is wind.
the sim I am trying to use is wind.
I am located in Milan.
I also have an N1 bought in the US, when google released the TMobile version (with the 900/2100 band) and in Milan gets the 3G signal pretty well. As soon as I put the Sim in the Galaxy tab, the data connection goes in Edge even when I have full signal.
thank you

What is your apn setting -"profili" from your screen shot? You might have to write down the values when your sim card is in your other phone, then manually add them to your tab.

That is the setting access point names.
There is where I have set up the Apn for my Italian operator. Since I have my nexus one with the 3G connection working fine, I am using the very same settings. The Firmware version I am using is XXJK1.

I already tried this. By checking the dialer code 4636 i have a pretty similar setting as the nexus but still it does not connect using 3G. I am not very techie but I wonder if it could be something related with the modem file I used during the flashing procedure. The calls work fine though.

Try the Roto 3g modem.bin file. Flash in Odin in the Phone spot, leave all other settings alone.

Was this solved? I'm in the U.S. thinking about buying a tab, in Sweden we use 2100Mhz for 3G. Will it work and which one should I get, T-mobile or AT&T?

sorry for not replying before. in the various posts I found two files, i wonder which one is the correct one to use with the firmware I have on my tab (XXJK1).
I would like to be able to make calls and connect in 3g with my italian sim
Which file I use?:
PDA_JL5modem.tar (modem.bin)
or the :
JMA_ROTO-2G_modem.bin
thank you

Actually, I would use the bell i9000 modem from the Roto JME post when using a network compatible to at&t. That gets voice and 3g. I would use the Roto 3g modem for a network compatible to t-mobile to get 3g, but not voice.

I downloaded a modem.bin file from one of the posts after reading one of the Roto posts but unfortunately did not change anything at all.
Would you please link me the post where I can download this specific bell i9000 modem, that is also compatible with a at&t? I want to use the tab for phone calls and 3G, as in Italy we have no voice restrictions as in the US.
Thanks

Telcel + HTC Aria = No 3G?

Hi guys,
I just bought this phone, unlocked it and inserted my sim everything was fine until... I noticed the "edge" icon.
It wont connect to the Telcel 3G network, I know that this phone is for AT&T network but Telcel uses the same frequencies (UMTS 850/1900), I tried "forcing" it to WCDMA only but it wont find any Telcel network.
What can I do? Does anyone have experience with this kind of problems?

Aria comes with APNS setup for AT&T data only. It's a simple fix - you can manually enter the info under wireless settings to add access point data for your carrier or you can just root and flash CM6, with has a huge - enormous default APNS database.
Here's a link to how the same issue was solved on the Nexus One.

Thank you! I'll try this right now!
-------EDIT-----------
Ok I entered the APN info, restarted the phone and Edge Icon is still there, with the "settings" on *#*#4636#*#* I changed to "WCDMA only" and the phone cant find a telcel network, only movistar, What is the problem? Maybe there isnt a Telcel 3g network near my phone? I used to have an iPhone 3G and I never had a problem with 3G Any thoughts?

[Q] Question about 3G network (WCDMA)

Hi all,
I'm struggling to get data connection over the 3G network, even though I've got a data plan and the settings seem to be on point.
I'm based in Dubai and I've got a Middle East tab (garbage as the firmware excludes the Android Market), so I've flashed a recent Euro firmware (JIP was the build if I recall)
When I go into network settings to choose 2G/3G/Auto, it shows me GSM and WCDMA as the choices. I'm pretty sure before the flash, it showed GSM and WCDMA. Is WCDMA the same as HSDPA?
The problem could be with the carrier, but I'm troubleshooting at the moment and this WCDMA is a bit confusing.
Any insights would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
Have you checked your APN settings? Chances are that the Euro firmware doesn't have the APNs "pre-installed" for your carrier(s). The good news is that you can add them in manually if this is the case.
Regards,
Dave

If your display shows a 3G or H type signal, then your problem is a bad APN setting.
WCDMA is 3G and H on your display, if you have that then you're in good shape.
Search the net or the carriers website for the the correct setting, then create a new APN and data will instantly start to flow.
It was missing the apn setting. Justed typed it in manually and Im hooked up. Although i was bamboozled for a little while as the H didnt apear until i had turned off the wifi.
Thanks for all ur help guys.

How to enbale 3g on t-mobile tab using att sim

TRY the secret code of *#*#2263#*#* ? This will work on tmobile’s samsung vibrant. This will allow you to check mark the 850mhz and 1900 mhz frequency for att 3g network. If you are on tmobile it will need 1700 AWS and 2100 MHZ for tmobile 3g. I would check all the frequencies so you won’t have to worry about this anymore. Let me know if that works for you. Thanks
this is questionable...seeing that you spelled enable wrong..
Instead of being sarcastic , why don't you just try it. I was trying to be helpful to the forum since i have received so much useful knowledge from all of you collectively . I stumbled on this by accident so i thought i would share it
Sorry, even though the menu choices are there, the hardware isn't. The vibrant does have the ability to use all the frequencies, but not the tab. I think samsung used one menu for every tab model.
Anyway the code is *#2263#. Keep trying -- we need a solution!
How one can dial *#2263# on T-Mobile tab, which doesn't have the dialer?

Flash any rom besides a stock rom and you will have the phone dialer.
Heres what I don't get.. Why can't I select the 1700mhz band. When I do it selects the 900mhz band.
I am using Simple Mobile, so theres no way for Tmobile to block the IMEI number....
If I use a stock rom, it works 3g no problems.
The radio band is a limitation of the firmware on the device - the TMO devices are configured to only use the 1700/2100 AWS combination, while the AT&T variant is configured to use 850 or 1900. (Both also appear to work on the 2100 Euro frequency).
To change the available radio bands it appears that not only must we change the Android firmware & modem, but also we need to change the firmware for the RF amplifier chip which is sold by Infineon as being universal.
So far, nobody has figured out how to do this.
Hence we have the 2G limitation on the TMO tabs, and no way of switching between AT&T and TMO frequencies on the same tab.
The IMEI issue is a red herring that is only relevant if you are trying to use a regular TMO phone SIM from a normal TMO phone account in a Tab. They will not let you use a SIM from a standard phone account in your TAB because they want you to pay twice for the data - once for your phone, and again for the Tab. You can't simply drop your phone SIM into your tab whenever you want 3G data on your Tab. This is what they block by checking the IMEI number against your account type.

Samsung uses the same service menu for all models of the tab, so all possible frequencies are on the menu. If there were no differences between carrier models we would ask have the same model number. Different models, carriers, hardware.

I get that.. I come from the land of the HTC Leo. For a long time all we had was edge service, the RMNET 3g, then PPP 3g, then clockwork and finally true RMNET 3g. However, my thoughts are.. If the stock ROM comes with 3g service enabled, there has to be a way to suck out the guts that make it work. Also within our "phone" enabled roms there also has to be a way to split the data within the rom. Sorry if it makes sense to me but look at it like this.. Roto has a modem switcher, why couldn't we just code the rom while cooking to use one modem for data and the other for calls?
Just remember that no matter what device you are using, when on a phone call - Data does not work.
Please shed some light on the details I am missing..

Wait a minute... Did you flash a Euro ROM over a US TMO Tab?
if so, you should be able to use the Roto Modem switcher that will allow you to use the TMO U S modem if you need 3G, or switch to the Euro modem to do calls and EDGE...
otherwise, something here does not ad up...

Roto actually tried to hack together the data code from the stock TMO 3G modem with the voice bits from the Euro one, but was not able to get it to work. Others have tried to flash modems from the Samsung Vibrant (which is in theory the same device in phone clothes), but the Vibrant modems will not play nice with the Tab and will not support 3G even with the US firmware...
There is something under the hood that we are not able to access that is blocking full phone capability on the TMO tab.

I agree with your approach. The modem.bin files we use with the modem switch both do what we want, but are excluding some hardware options.
My idea would be for someone to open the two binary files side-by-side to compare and find the line that turns on/off the voice in the 2g and 3g modems.
To that end we have a bounty thread in the general section, to attract the talent and skill we need. Why not go make a pledge? The higher the sooner!

---ATTENTION ALL--- hey guys the only dialer pads are from the euro roms which uses a diff freq then north america we would need to make an american rom with tmobile or att united states 3g freq's this is why u can either hav 3g data or cellular serves also for u guys that hav cellular in order to hav 3g data you would hav to trash ur imei and make a new one tmous has all galaxy tab imei's locked for data only.... hoped this helped u all and we are out here lookin and waitin... according to roto, simple mobile uses tmobile infrastructure, so the speculation is that tmobile is still effectively blocking the imei.

[Q] Defy, AT&T EDGE only

I have an unlocked Defy from T-Mobile USA that I'm using with my AT&T service, but I'm only getting EDGE wherever I go, no UMTS at all, and I've even heard of people getting it to run on HSPA bands. I know already that HSPA is available everywhere from my home to my workplace, thanks to my Atrix 4G. I've rooted the Defy and it's running Cyanogenmod 7 latest. Any help would be greatly appreciated, as I can find nothing on this forum or on Google to remedy the issue.
You should try to change the freq via baseband switcher. And restart.
Maybe you got the "2g only" checked in networks settings..uncheck that.
Settings >Wireless & networks > Mobile networks
You can also put automatic(2G and 3G) mode in GSM/UMTS network preferences.
Thanks for the reply Viper. I just noticed the baseband is set to some central Europe nonsense. Should I change it to one of the T-Mobile USA band settings? There's nothing there for AT&T.
Edit: I changed the baseband to US T-Mobile 3.Something, whichever was latest. 2G only was not checked. I'm still getting 2G only. Could it be my APN settings? Could I copy the APNs from my Atrix?
I'm having a problem with my AT&T connection as well, but I've been using my phone unlocked on the network since March with no problem. I'm new to modding, but OCD about streamlining my electronics. My friend suggested rooting my device and flashing a new ROM. I decided on stock Nordic Froyo, and it makes me so happy not to see all the T-mobile crap in my apps tray.
BUT the collateral damage is not so hot. I have no 3g or even 2g connection anymore. I tried the fix in this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=944258 and was able to get a signal with 4 bars instead of the previous state of emergency calls only, but no letters like E or 3g and no ability to use the internet/transfer data. I also installed the broadband switcher in this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1052745 and tried all of the T-mobile US bands. No luck. I did rest the APN to default. No change. I've been using wifi, but will have to go back to work soon. Not having access to the smart part of my smartphone will feel sort of like having an arm cut off.
I'm not sure what to do next. I could try flashing another ROM, but from what I've read in the forums, that's no guarantee.
If anyone has any suggestions to help a noob, I'd be forever grateful.
Thanks in advance!
Thanks for the link, halah. Do I apply this as an update.zip from recovery? Or install?
Never mind, it won't work for me, for whatever reason.

No 4G/LTE with SM-G935FD

I have a new SM-G935FD purchased in the UAE. The software version is MMB29K.G935FXXU1APD1. The phone has a "United Arab Emirates" section in the About page.
I travel a lot. I generally use a local SIM when I am in a country for some time. Right now I am in France. I am using a SIM from Bouygues Telecom but I have no 4G/LTE service at all. The phone is connecting at H+ and also at 3G, but it is not showing 4G/LTE at all.
I will be in several other European countries as well as the US soon. I specifically purchased this phone because it has all the LTE bands for the countries I spend time in. This same SIM does give me LTE connections on Bouygues when I use it in my old phone (a Motorola X 2nd Gen). I had expected this phone to just work on LTE everywhere that I typically go.
I have looked through these forums and see a thread or two about others with LTE problems. But no clear solutions.
I have tried various apps such as LTE Discovery (no luck) as well as 4G LTE Switcher - using that if I set "LTE only", I get no service at all, and then have to reboot the phone before I get service back.
Is there something I need to do to get LTE?
Thanks.

Yes, the bottom slot. The SDcard is in the top slot. The SIM is showing in the phone as "SIM1".
Strange. I have a G935FD and it works with LTE no problems. I've used it in Singapore and Indonesia, with different SIMs and all work.
In Settings - Mobile Networks - Network Mode, it's set to LTE/3G/2G?

Yes it is. I've tried changing to one of the non-LTE modes and back, but no change.
In the About device / Status / SIM Card status page, I see Mobile network type as UTMS. Shouldn't that have LTE and, if so, how do I change it?
Mine says the same, but I'm only connected to 3G at the moment, so I don't know if it's normal it not. I have a 4G card in, but I'm out of my area's 4G network range.
Edit: Actually I was connected to my wifi. Now I'm connected to my 3G and it says HSPA+ now
Edit again: Ok, so my phone is jumping between 3G and H+, which is what's changing.

Ah, mine is doing the same. I see Mobile network type jumping between UMTS and HSPA+ if I watch for a while. Obviously that field is a status field, not a setting field.
Thing is, I am in an area with full LTE coverage.
At least you seem to be confirming that this should work. Still need to figure out what the problem is.
