Putting ads in app? - Android Software Development

What's the best way to put ads in an app and which is the best service to use?
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App

Depends on the app, I use admob, pays like crap lol. But they are all owned by goggle so yea lol.
Sent from my Nexus One

Oh didn't realise admob was owned by Google
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App

Ok so what is the easiest way t put them in my app?
I am signed up to admob now but don't understand how i put them in my app.

You would be better off running your own ad server and selling advertising... there are way too many jackass developers here on xda who make mods and apps to kill ads. I respect some for their work... but I think it's BS that they screw other developers by killing ads.

agreed.. I have no issue with users manually modifying their host file or even providing a list you can update your host files with however all the roms including a host file that basically blocks any money generation for devs is a bit off the deep end.
As for the OP's question you need to follow the PDF guide in the admob site for how to install ads to your application. There is really no better way of explaining it over how they did in that file.
http://www.admob.com/docs/AdMob_Android_SDK_Instructions.pdf

I figured out how to do it by watchin a youtube video on it, just go to youtube and search "using admob android" or something like that, theres a bunch of different ones but the one I used was by some guy who say's he's from "fragger games in London"... he'll walk you through it, and then once you download the zip file on the admob site, you can copy and paste the code from the pdf file inside it

hey,
You should try some of the app store's developers platforms.... I think they are the best way to go about. Try GetJar, InMobi, etc.
Cheers

So I'm screwing developers by having an adblocker?
I wasn't going to tap on the ad anyway. The ads never have anything good in them, they always look like scams. Its like those kind of ads you see on porn sites that say "HOT GIRLS NEAR YOU!" or something like that, its all fake or seems fake.
I'd bet that almost every ad click is completely accidental.
I wish we could remove the ads altogether. All ads do for the user is make the experience poorer, taking away screen real estate and usually looking hideous.

I use Admob too, have made like 60 cents so far lol. But my App isn't very popular (yet!) Once you get into the >250,000 category I think money starts rolling in.

It's piracy.
And moreover, android people are introducing a new licensing mechanism where the app can lookup whether it's actually bought and paid for, or not - http://android-developers.blogspot.com/2010/07/licensing-service-technology-highlights.html

1. post here, not bad
You think Android devs are rich people, havin houses in Hollywood Hills, right ?!
Support devs and you get good apps!
to answer your question, no it will not break your phone...as a former notorious "cracked" app downloader (since paid for the ones I support and uninstalled the ones I do not use due to my commitment to the community as a user) I can't wait for this licensing to be widespread...I see too many people handing out links to piracy sites and also linking the damn things in app comments...but yea.

Common Sense
Android is probably one of the platform where application are priced the cheapest I have seen, so no, downloading an pirated application will not break your phone but it will not make the android platform any better either.
If developer can't make money why would they keep trying, as an example, A symbian chess prg cost 14$, on android it's 3.99 if I remember correctly so yes I pay for my apps.
The platform is still new, it has great potential, site like the one that are advertised can hurt development badly, there's a difference into giving your sister one copy of an application you have and making it available to everybody.
both are piracy but at a much different scale!
I will be really happy when I heard that the maker of an application I use everyday has made 1 millions knowing I contributed 1$ to it...
About Google piracy solution, I would be better off without it I am against all form of DRM, we will see...
P.S.
If you press and hold on a comment you can mark it as spam in the market...
[Sarcasm] Its perfectly fine. Google promotes it and so do the developers. If you read the forum rules, you'd have never asked such an obvious question. [/Sarcasm]

Don't do it! Let's support our Android developers because by doing so the Android platform will get better and that benefits us as users. All paid apps can be refunded in 24 hours, which is awesome in my opinion because if I buy an app and it doesn't work for me I can always get a refund so I never feel like I wasted my money. So do that, buy an app, try it and if it works for you keep it. Don't pirate it. Plus you get get regular updates to your app and the latest version always by purchasing it rather than pirating.
my 2 cents
By downloading cracked apps, you'll never know what was done to the app.
It's so easy for a cracker to gain access to your phone root permissions (if you are rooted like many of us are) via a cracked app. How will you ever know?!
Unless you yourself are a developer, then you'd know what to look for.
Most users have no idea WHAT to look for, and will download a fun looking app just because their buddy recommended it. For all you know, it's sending your contact list, SMSs, and other private information to some shanty-shack in China.
That's why Google made it an option in the Androidâ„¢ Operating System to allow or disallow Market Apps. I think it's great that we are allowed to do that *cough*AT&T*cough*restrictions*.
"You wouldn't download a car!"
Don't get cracked apps. They make your balls shrink or your boobs sag!
Also never ask about cracked apps on a forum with lots of developers, you won't make many friends...
While I completely agree that piracy is bad for developers and the community in the long run, it is sometimes very frustrating for users like me. I live in India and have no access to the paid apps in the market.
I would love to pay for apps like psx4droid and a good chess program, but I have no option to do that. And these apps are not available directly from the developers sites as well.
I really hope that Google opens up the market to a wider audience. It is a win-win for everybody.

Seriously, if you don't like ads, remove the app. Ads are a way developers make money. If you don't want to support them, don't use their products. Simple as that. Please don't try to block ads because you feel entitled to free software without ads. That's virtually on the brink of pirating in my opinion.
no, seriously, if the app had the typical adds on the bottom of the ap that doesnt interfeer with teh ap, well then fine. but this whole page ad is rediculous. and my question wasnt about you opinion on the matter it was about how to get rid of it. if the dev would charge a small fee like everyone else....fine too.

Whatever. Its not just my opinion that if you don't like the terms of an app, you should just not use it. Its common courtesy. If you don't like the ads that the developer uses, you don't use their app. Simple as that. And this is a developer forum, so you aren't going to get much support for trying to circumvent a developer's ads. You should also look into an attitude adjustment. You're a bit edgy and cynical. Not taking any sides here, just two cents..
If a dev puts all the hard work it takes into creating a great app then shame on him if he chooses to support it solely with ads and doesn't give people the opportunity to buy it.
If I like an app then I pay for it. If it has ads and there is no paid version then I block the ads because I D.E.S.P.I.S.E ads.
I don't understand why some developers don't offer a paid version of their apps anyways??

Basic marketing, if you piss off potential customers you won't sell crap, and NO ONE........even you, likes adds, so please get down off your high horse and be real.
Have a gander at his ratings.......no one likes the adds and his ratings are in the tank. perhaps you can learn a lesson or two from this thread while making apps ADDS = NO MONEY

Not kill, but I think it keeps Devs from making their apps free with ad support. And a lot of ROM devs add the ad blocking built in to the ROMs. Devs deserve to get paid for their work on apps. Be it ads or buying the apps. I think more devs will start severely limiting the free apps. Also, locking apps on phones that have ads blocked isn't a bad idea. I know I will be looking into that.

Now I use house ad to fill empty space. I was thinking to use google adsense to improve the situation. So I contact admob to ask for the criteria for adsense activaton. But they didn't reply me for exact number.

How do you advertise in your apps?

Hi! I'm Dylan, the xda intern :victory:

If you could please, please take this short survey, it would be much appreciated! We promise to keep everything confidential; in fact, the survey is anonymous.

~dylan
Gave the survey.
Where can i see the results?
ablawle which
Make an account in Admob by google. And read this monetization in developer.android
Forums
Posting on forums or other websites that allow it.
Today in this competitive world whether you have an iPad app...., Android app or any Mobile app you need to advertise to make people know about your app. very important factor for advertising your app is effectively determining where and how to advertise your app.effective app advertising requires mainly 4 key areas....
Brand
Buzz
Balanced opportunity
Social Media support
I have the same problem.
2 weeks ago I published an Android app but very few people tried it.
The market is full of apps so it's hard to acquire visibility.
So I'm looking for websites to advertise it.
admob sucks
I have like 40,000 plus downloads on admob. got like 9 dollars. U don't need to advertise. Just pick a name. They will find it. The market is large
Posting on forums, when allowed
Contacting websites and suggesting the app for review
Using admob for monetization
We tried admob too, no luck there. Posting on forums (where allowed), trying to make a good icon and description and looots of luck
we tried getting some reviews done too, but didn't see any rise in downloads. Also we got into a printed medium too, which didn't seem to have much impact either.
posting it on social network like google+,fb+twitter+forum is way better than admob
Yes idlike to know this

One major problem, (for example with google play) is that they dont actually give a chance
for new developers to promote their applications
Our apps hide under a pile of dozen of others.
One sulution
A random application could be featured on the main entry page every hour.
This will balance the major companies promoting their stuff. And if the app is good, it wil get
the hype to climb up
Unfortunately we dont see that comming soon.

a) Half of the apps in google play are NOT crap. Have you seen them promoted ?
I can point to some excelent apps (better than the well known competition) with
so little downloads that looks suspicius
b) Even imdb has a heuristics system to remove biased/suspicius rankings, so surely
google can do that. A crap-free promoting system can be created
But it seems that
1. Either major companies want to clear out small competition on google play
or
2. Or... some developers created a good highly-downloaded app and had their
idea stollen from somebody else who created a better one, and want
to push new competition out of the way
Either way...

Of course, there are many good apps. I even think that this is the majority.
And I've seen those great small apps, too. (But most of them got lots of downloads within a few months. It took some time but if the app is good and unique, you will get your downloads. )

I think that it is Google that doesn't want to promote the small apps.
If they did it randomly, most apps (not all!!!) would get less downloads than the bigger ones.
If they selected the small apps by hand, it would be very expensive and they wouldn't know where to start.
If they choose the big ones with many downloads (like now), they can be sure that they will get many downloads. And with downloads comes money.
I don't think it's fair, but I can't think of a better and still efficient method to select the small apps which generates as much income as the system does now.

A combination of approaches work best. Having a facebook presence helps. Some of the very successful apps integrate with facebook very well. Some games tend to grant more time/lives if you share or like on facebook (Candy Crush, for example).
Depending on the app, limited-time trial versions are quite effective.
Agree that plain ads can be problematic as they can lead to poor reviews.. that in turn can hit your G. Play ranking and lead to fewer downloads.
Hi guys! Interesting discussion. Actually there are number of general ways to monetize an app:
Paid applications. You create an app that will charge a certain amount from the beginning.
Freemium. A software product can be downloaded free (so-called 'lite' version), while its extended, 'premium' features and services are offered for a payment.
Subscription (paid access). This monetization model originates from real magazines and newspapers, and is also very widespread.
In-app purchases.
Ad banners, texts, videos - this monetization model is constantly growing, encompassing the market of free applications.
User base. When the free software you own finally becomes popular, wins an audience, it can also be used for further monetization.

Actually we develop mobile apps for our clients, so it's monetization is their decision.
One of the most widespread one is freemium, but like other models it has its limitations.

OpenSource Lib: Android Alliance Ads (prevent adblocker - for admob)

Hello,
i want to present you my latest open source library for android:
By using adblocker or activating the airplane mode it is possible to bypass the display of advertisement like admob banners in apps.
Now you can prevent this behaviour by using this library.
Instead of the blocked out admob banners show your banners for own products or products of your partners. The banners are stored within the app and can be displayed instead.
The project is a lib project with a sample project to show you how easy it is to integrate it into your project.
There is a basic implementation and an advanced implementation with callbacks.
It is possible to use banner ads and full screen ads at same time.

Apps that use this library:
ID Card Scanner (Banner Ads)
My Instructions (Banner Ads)

Curses!!... Oops sorry couldn't control my emotions..
Anyway, like you said this is a lib that will contain ads for offline display, that means this could be really bulky to include in apps?
I think this is good
Not because I like ads but as written many people disable the ads and the developer doesn't earn as he should
Good idea and for sure developers will use it
Yes, the lib is a wrapper for admob.

Your own banners use exactly the same dimensions as the admob banners. The normal user will not notice a difference to the admob banners.

I hope it. The slogan is: "The scrounger have to pay"
You can test the lib in all my apps.
Thanks for the positive feedback
I just hope that all the developers will add a "pro" version of all apps released with this lib. I would rather pay cash than be annoyed by ads and banners.
Being forced to view ads without the ability to pay (or block!) for them to go away leads to uninstallation in my device. Every time.
I use an adblocker, but in saying that I pay for apps that are useful and solid.
A big decider for me is not only design in function but design in appearance.
The adblocker helps in making my choice to buy an app by removing distractions that are additional to the design and function.....
For me if I can't get a clean first impression then I probably don't want to spend time imagining how the app will work without advertising.

Just a notice if you patch the ads with offline mode you'll get no ads not even your own ads just a hint
[24th May i'm on vacation. so no work will be done] JAPAN HERE I COME :]
Yes, i know. The offline mode is also just for testing and possibly increases the willingness to buy.
Many users enable the airplane mode while playing games to disable ads. But that no longer works with the library.
I hope most users do not think like me but i really hate the advertised product when it shows up constantly!
How do you earn money with prepackaged ads ? How do you monetize this ?
With own banners you earn no money. but you can promote your other apps. or you show banner on another developer and he in turn for you. So you increase the breadth of your apps.
Good step
I block adds. Not to see no advertising but to protect my privacy.
Users should be able to decide weather the want to be tracked by add companies or not.
I totally understand that some developers don't want to sell the apps but need some money for further development. If the adds are stored locally no tracker will be informed in real time.
Offline ads? Incredibly annoying and will reduce my support of Devs that go this route. Finding innovative ways to antagonize end users is ill considered. It's dismaying when Devs use ads as their primary (or worse, sole) revenue stream. I have absolutely no problem with Devs who have an ad free paid version and an ad supported "free" version. You do deserve to be compensated for your work. But realize that there is a right way and wrong way to go about that.
If your work is interesting enough for me to install, I for one will buy the paid version app. Devs that do not have an ad free alternative should expect a lot of hate. Well deserved hate. There is a lot a good work by Devs to be admired on this site. Please don't make it hard to support your work. Or erode end user loyalty by totally alienating us.
Hey, nice lib! I will have fun figuring out how to block it entirely in all ROMS I release. Hell, maybe I'll make an exposed module too.
As a developer, it's your right to decide how to try and generate revenue from your work.
And, as an end-user, it's my right to not have to look at ugly banner ads. Honestly...how many deliberate clicks have you EVER seen on a banner ad? I can't think of anybody in their right mind who would ever want to click one.
Here's a better idea...instead of helping others to continue to force crap on users...either make the app entirely free, or make one feature-restricted version and one premium version. You know...make us want to pay for more STUFF instead of less CRAP.
But no, really...I will be working out a way to block this ridiculous idea. Thanks.
I don't dev for andro but nice lib. Hope devs would make a good use of this and give a way out of the adds (ads removal in app purchase !)
Congratulations for portal appearance !

You can put a banner to buy ccleaner for your computer and use a customized link to get some money on the buy, you can put an ads for a paid app you made yourself ... just an example, there's multiple ways. Imagination is the key.
It was all nice and good but..

Allowing this kind of ads to show with your lib will just make people who don't mind well placed ads (unobtrusive banners, ads in the settings screen) look for a way to disable your lib.
