battery tip, - Vibrant General

Here is a battery tip
Disable Data on ur phone, If ur not surfing the web (turn on data when u need it )
Calls and Text still go thru
Hold down power and the menu will come up then click on deactivate network
OR
This also can be done in extended controls Or Quick Settings
MAKES A BIG DIFFERENCE !
so far i got
14h 44m unpluged and i have 46% Left on Axura 2.2.5.9 ( i knoe 2.2.6 is out i just find 2.2.5.9 better)

Wow. You're a genius! Haha. This has been known for awhile due to obvious reasons. In fact there are apps that will turn your data off/on whenever your screen is sleeping/awake.

i knoe but do u really need data when u make a call ?

No, just turn it off manually. Those automatic apps are pretty pointless imo. You don't use data every time the screen is on, they just use more battery by constantly switching and giving the user no freedom.

dunno about anyone else but when I push send to make a call my data icon turns off and disappears until I hang up.

I don't think GSM supports simultaneous data and voice.

I think powering off the phone when not making calls will save even more battery.
Seriously, I use my phone for a lot of things that require background data. Seems silly to me to turn off something critical for me using my phone just to save some battery.

so far on nero 5 i havent even reconditioned ( im going to do it anyways later) , but its given me over 16 hours of battery, and thats all i need, i just need 10 hours max, from the time i wake up to the time i go to sleep, if it can give me that im good.

Yup, I will be one the phone while looking up information on the browser.

Hey if u deactivate ur phone it will save your battery life.
Seriously though I am using juice defender on my evo and it basically turns data off while ur screen is off. It has worked pretty well. It was off the charger from 730am yesterday till 11pm last night and I still had 55 percent. Of course I worked all day and my phone saw very little use yesterday.

Changing 3G to Edge on Aria

I have tried settings
wireless & networks
mobile network settings
network operators
Search networks & select Automatically is greyed out and doesnt work
Here is what I did to get it working
1.click phone then press *#*#4636#*#*
2.click on phone information
3.scroll down and click on wcdma preferred
4.click gsm only
5.hit back until you get out and there you go
Down side is every time you reboot you have to do all over again. If any one else knows a better way It would be greatly appreciated.
Mine stays on 3G. I tried this a few days ago using Anycut to create a shortcut to "phone info" and I had NO luck there either.

My Phone is rooted so maybe thats why, or possibly you need to type in
*#*#4636#*#* a little faster I tried 1st time and no luck but on second time worked like a charm.
I wish a direct dial shortcut would work but no luck either. I did get there manually though and yes you have to dial fast. The other thing I noticed is my icon just changes to a 3g with a check mark lik ehow it does if you turn off the always on feature. I suppose I could test with a network speed app to see if it really is on edge though.

I get the E from edge and have done speed test and confirm it is on edge..some times when you change the settings to GSM ONLY..just wait until the E (edge)pops up and if that doesnt work you have to change it back to wcdma preferred and then back to GSM ONLY it will work... and no need to exit out until you get edge on...I just did it and it took a few times but it works I promise.

It will help with battery life. 3G drains battery pretty fast, also depending on where you live and signal strengths, your signal can go back and forth from 3g to edge and draining your battery even faster. So if you leave on Edge will help out battery.
Also you can always add a widget to turn off your mobile data when connected to wifi.
Click on Menu -> Add + -> widget -> Settings -> from the list choose mobile data. You can now turn on or off your mobile data when not needed.
Thanks
There's a widget by curvefish.com on the Market that switches between edge and 3g. Haven't tried or tested. Android noob and a little worried to.
How's the battery life difference? I know on the HTC Tilt 2 there was a 4 - 6hr difference.
I think it is the way the SIM card is provisioned. I wasn't able to go to 2G only on my Backflip either even though some could.

I really like that extended controls..THANK YOU , but the TOGGLE DATA WIDGET that i was talking about will still let you send and receive SMS ans MMS..the original one cuts off the APN completely and no SMS or MMS. Thats the only reason i use it. While we on the subject of widgets..check out Audio Manager Pro.
I think I found a way to sustain battery life as much as my old WM phone. A combination of this Edge techniques and setting autokill up and ignore lists ... and removing polling apps (but everyone knows this) ... so the result is today I went into Edge mode with 9% battery left and 3 hours later it was still 9%. Seems really promising. Tonight I'll go to sleep and let you know how much it dropped while at rest (with APN on).
I also tested the Extended Controls APN button with respects to Edge and I was able to recieve SMS and MMS (but the picture portion of the MMS would not download until I activated the APN button). But I suspect leaving the APN on will not hurt your battery life as I had mine on and battery was rock solid (at least with Edge).
To save additional battery, I ditched Advanced Task Killer and went with "Task Manager" which also has a convenient kill widget. I also dumped the aiSystemWidget (WHICH I LOVE BY THE WAY) as it was constantly polling information and instead installed an app called "Android System Info" which is just as effective at displaying information about my system. Anyone else have an app like this that is light on memory (sorry for the hijack).
Sorry to ramble
I get about a loss of 1% per hour now with sync and apn on.

I agree with you 100% on the combination of this Edge techniques and setting autokill up and ignore lists ... and removing polling apps...I also have start up startup cleaner 2..and that does help out with boot up speed.
How is "Task Manager" different from Advanced Task Killer? I have the Pro version and love it....and I'm digging that Android System Info.

[Q] Turning off "cell" radio NOT wireless 3G radio...

Hello everyone..
here is my problem....
I no longer have cellular service from sprint, lets say sprint disconnected it...
ok so i have my evo and a bunch of things i can still do with it.
but! why is it that i cant turn off just the "cellular" radio without it going into plane mode? keep in mind im not talking about "go into wireless mode and uncheck mobile" that only turns off 3g and leaves the phone COMPLETELY ON.
i mean, i dont have the service why do i still have to put it in airplane mode (and on evo's you cant use bluetooth while on that mode)
is there an apk that i can delete so the "phone" feature is gone and no longer shows my the strength bars without the need for airplane mode? its annoying to have to turn on my "PMP" and have to see the airplane on there.
you can use titanium backup to uninstall the phone, then keep mobile networks unchecked and your good to go
edit I think it may still search for signal

installing them wouldn't solve your problem, now I'm thinking delete the prl and set it to roaming only but that would drain the battery fast, that's a toughy, lemme think about it a bit
edit it would be easy if you didn't need bluetooth
Nope, there's no real way to do it. You bought a phone, not an iPod. Live with Airplane mode or get service.
you could kill the radio process in os monitor, unsure of its exact name though
edit ill 2nd dr on this one, theres no good way

I was looking for something like this too. In an area with very little signal, having the radio on is just annoying because it never gets signal, so it drains battery forever, even more because it is constantly scanning. This is perfect for that.
Now if someone could make a widget for this switch...
How does the battery drain? If sprint disconnected your phone it won't keep searching for a network. I have my old phone that laid for over 5 days without charge when I hot my evo... that was both the moment and intercept

It will still actually be connected to the network, you just wont be able to make calls or get texts. This is required for all cell phones, so you can still call 911, or call the carrier to re-activate the phone if you ever want to.

What keeps enabling Background Data??

I am continually having to disable the Background Data option on my DZ, because something keeps re-enabling it in the background without my knowledge. This happens several times a day. How can I tell which app is enabling it?
Could be Market. You cant log in if you dont have background data enabled. So maybe its got a mind of its own and turns it on.
sometimes could be your people or facebook or email syncing in the background
Maybe silly question but have u disabled "allow always on mobile data" in mobile networks in settings?

Auto-syncing is already disabled. Unfortunately it hasn't helped.
I haven't flashed the phone before so the prospect of doing it (and potentially bricking it) concerns me a little. I'm on software version 1.82.161.1 - is this a fairly recent version?

I've already done that. It's the drain on battery that I was concerned about - i.e. continually trying to connect

That's what I meant when I said I'd done it - I have the mobile network disabled by default. Presumably with background data enabled it will still attempt to connect frequently, and consume power, even if data is disabled?

What the heck are you using your phone for then? If you dont want any mobile data, just turn on airplane mode and then enable WiFi for data.
U sound a bit too paranoid. The chances of bricking your phone from flashing your phone one time are slim to none. Sounds like the rom is borked to me. It reminds me of people who are scared to death to click anything in windows cause there scared there gonna break something. There are people on here who WANT to brick there phone cause they want to send it into repair and not have tmobile see its s-off and can't even make the phone brick when purposely trying to.
You seem smart enough, as long as you can read your not gonna mess nothing up! They make these electronic devices idiot proof cause 99% of the users of them are idiots! (Xda users not included). If they were that easy to bust no one would even use a smart phone cause you would be hearing about it every day from all your friends/acquaintances!

Funnily enough I use it to make phone calls. When I need the occasional bit of data (maybe 2-3 times a day) I'll switch on wifi or 3G temporarily for that purpose. That way I may still have some battery left by the evening. Unless there's something else that keeps starting up and draining the battery of course....

Honestly, like the other poster said I think you're being a bit too paranoid. Just let your phone do its thing. Turn off mobile data, and turn off any app's auto-sync functions. If you absolutely don't need your phone to use data other than occasional WiFi it won't make a difference. You're not going to lose battery in any significant way with what these apps are doing.

Also, if you only need data 2-3 times per day, you should stop paying for a data plan.
I'm on a PAYG plan - 20p per Mb - so it's not a problem.
Incidentally I had a first attempt at rooting yesterday - followed the noob guide elsewhere in this forum but didn't get very far. I'm reasonably technical (a former developer) but the whole rooting thing is far from painting by numbers.
I have an open thread somewhere else on this issue

Lots of bugs/glitches with Nexus S

So I've been using the Nexus S for about one month now, my very first smartphone. Discaimer: I'm a NOOB to the core. I never rooted my phone, never thought of it.
I'm pulling my hair out at the following long list (and counting) of bugs and glitches I've noticed with my phone:
1) Menu settings randomly change (including ringtones)
2) screen doesn't turn off automatically, even though I have set screen auto off to 30 seconds. (this one is somewhat "dangerous" as I leave my phone in the bag and don't check it for a while, and later notice that my screen has been left on the whole time, draining my battery)
3) cannot make outgoing calls. I don't get outgoing ringing when I try to make outgoing calls. Also, during this time, the phone did not ring when there was an incoming call
4) pictures in the gallery come and go
5) The list of apps I downloaded disappear from "my apps" list in Android market
6) when I select a call from the call log, the phone dials a different contact
7) after using airplane mode, turning off airplane mode does not restore signal and 3G data
What's very frustrating is that all of these bugs seem to come and go randomly, without any "patterns" or "triggers." I've restarted the phone, and the issue I was having seems to go away, only to lead to another one a while later. I am wondering if any of these issues are known problems. Also, are these problems more likely to be software or hardware issues?
I'm running
Android 2.3.4
Baseband version I9020AUCKD1
Kernel version 2.6.35.7-ge382d80
Build number GRJ22
on Fido network in Canada.
Thanks

You know, half the time i wouldn't even take note of the OP username and just go ahead and try to help, but you caught on to something here. Oddball username, 1 post and very unusual (really far out) problems/issues...
hmmm
1) Menu settings randomly change (including ringtones) - Probably user error. Or you're using apps that keep conflicting with your setup.
2) screen doesn't turn off automatically, even though I have set screen auto off to 30 seconds. (this one is somewhat "dangerous" as I leave my phone in the bag and don't check it for a while, and later notice that my screen has been left on the whole time, draining my battery) - Manually turn screen off after a given set of time, chances are, your bag is pressing up against the phone when you place it in and the phone keeps pressing buttons (My guess).
3) cannot make outgoing calls. I don't get outgoing ringing when I try to make outgoing calls. Also, during this time, the phone did not ring when there was an incoming call - I had this problem before, are you using Google Voice with integration?
4) pictures in the gallery come and go - Depends on the size of the images, the phone can only read so much data from SD card at a time. I assume you're not giving it enough time to load everything or you have a .nomedia file somewhere that's hiding your pictures from being shown.
5) The list of apps I downloaded disappear from "my apps" list in Android market - It's a known bug with some Market builds. Downloading another app or giving it a minute will usually fix the problem.
6) when I select a call from the call log, the phone dials a different contact - This is weird. Do you have a custom dialer app from the market that may have this bug? I played with my phone out of box a few days and nothing like this happened.
7) after using airplane mode, turning off airplane mode does not restore signal and 3G data - If you're in a weak signal area, it can take longer to gain 3G back. If it doesn't come back within 2 minutes, I suggest a reboot. I also suggest doing a profile update, PRL update, and firmware update (as Google has sent an OTA with bugfixes) to see if these problems can be fixed.
The only bug I experienced since I've got my Nexus S is that the Screen won't respond for a little while after unlocking my phone.
I didn't had the time yet to analyze the problem more detailed, maybe this also happens due to a specific widget? I don't know. I got a lot of them all over my four different home screens.
No response from OP yet people continue to respond. I think the fecal fan has left the building.

Nexus S does not have an SD card slot AFAIK. I gave it plenty of time to load everything. I wouldn't expect my phone to require 5 minutes to load pictures. I own a smartphone, not a 486. On reboot, some pictures show up that weren't in the gallery before. After subsequent reboot, some other random pictures disappear.

I understand 3G can take longer, but it seems fishy that my cell signal doesn't come back. I waited more than 2 minutes and I ended up HAVING to reboot (twice in fact) to get both 3G and cell reception back.

the only error that has been reported is the images missing. the rest are probably your fault or you're doing something wrong. if you love **** so much go buy the iPhone

Dude might just have a scat fetish. It is not up to us to judge one's idiosyncrasies. Heaven loves us all the way we are.

Yes this happens. BUT.... only when you mount the phone via USB and do not disconnect it properly. The phone doesnt have time to scan for your set ringtones, and therefore defaults it to some random mp3 or whatever.

Due to what i said above as well. This is a HUGE bug.
Every other problem you have is either user-error or an issue from your telco.
Have you done a factory reset of the phone? You may even have a virus. Just read somewhere that Android is the most targeted platform for them as of now.

H870 oreo 8.0 giving me an alert every time i turn data ON or OFF

So pretty much what the title says, i just updated to 8.0 today on my european version, does anyone of you know how to turn this off? When i turn it on it says data charges may apply and when i want to turn it off it just asks me to confirm, its not at all practical.
It's the same on LG V30 Oreo. I don't think it can be disabled unfortunately.
H870 here, I don't have thse question when I turn it on. You sure don't have a limit set or roaming?

I stand correct, if i use the slider on the main network page i don't get it. But if i scroll down to "mobile setting" and toggle it there i get the warning.

Yes, just like that. Can't even figure out who would do such a thing and why xD
I ask myself also, it's okay if it's roaming alert, otherwise i don't see point of this. ??
H870 Brazilian with the same problem here.
well, my H870 is giving the same anoying message everytime i want to turn off network data. I'm from Portugal...
i think its default from LG new UX, as someone say V30 does the same but this is just stupid.
Easy solution: keep data on.

easy indeed but completely unwanted !
I'm very disapointed with that "improvement" <_< it's really annoying after a few days...
NB : german G6 used on french network but this issue seems to be global
WTF is just a click, nothing more.
It is but when im in the car driving ( yes i know phone and driving ) but i need idk google maps it's just a 2 step process. Idk that warning about turning on data is pointless..

that's crappy thinking. what would happen if everyone thought the same with every setting? what if you had to confirm everytime you want to enter an app? anyway, being used with a much more intuitive action then switching to a new one, which is not intuitive at all, sucks.

yes and when you switch on/off 10 times a day, it's not ONE click but 20 !
same message for plane mode was allready annoying enough with only once a day...
now that, it's absurd
the same thing happens to me, H870 from Peru.
Why the hell are you turning mobile data off? It's a smart phone. It's supposed to be online 24/7, which is why it has....mobile data!
If you don't want mobile data on your phone, buy a $10 Nokia.

Because having it always on drains the battery faster, smartass. I turn it on only when I need something. Some of us don't need/want to be online 24/7. And with this stand-by drain I got after Oreo every bit of battery counts. The phone lasts like 70% of what it used to on Nougat. (And yes, I did a factory reset.)

Are you sure that phones have mobile data to be 24/7 online, mate? xD
It is indeed a smartphone and not a 24/7-should-be-online-machine. When I want to sleep, take a nap, or just not be bothered by emails, facebook etc, I turn wifi and mobile data off. I'm not putting my phone on silent 'cause I want people to be able to call me if there's something going on. Also, I just turn it off then I'm at home and got wifi instead. Aaaaaand also I'd like to have at least a decent UX on this damn phone if the support is crappy af anyway.
Is just a click, nothing more. And if you need to turn on and turn off data 100 times a day (just you and some of your friens..) just click that button 100 times. I'm on android from donut, and I never turned off data.
