[Q] Turning off "cell" radio NOT wireless 3G radio... - EVO 4G General

Hello everyone..
here is my problem....
I no longer have cellular service from sprint, lets say sprint disconnected it...
ok so i have my evo and a bunch of things i can still do with it.
but! why is it that i cant turn off just the "cellular" radio without it going into plane mode? keep in mind im not talking about "go into wireless mode and uncheck mobile" that only turns off 3g and leaves the phone COMPLETELY ON.
i mean, i dont have the service why do i still have to put it in airplane mode (and on evo's you cant use bluetooth while on that mode)
is there an apk that i can delete so the "phone" feature is gone and no longer shows my the strength bars without the need for airplane mode? its annoying to have to turn on my "PMP" and have to see the airplane on there.

you can use titanium backup to uninstall the phone, then keep mobile networks unchecked and your good to go
edit I think it may still search for signal

installing them wouldn't solve your problem, now I'm thinking delete the prl and set it to roaming only but that would drain the battery fast, that's a toughy, lemme think about it a bit
edit it would be easy if you didn't need bluetooth

Nope, there's no real way to do it. You bought a phone, not an iPod. Live with Airplane mode or get service.

you could kill the radio process in os monitor, unsure of its exact name though
edit ill 2nd dr on this one, theres no good way

Get the app "Network" by Mangelow. It has a button to turn off just the radio.

I was looking for something like this too. In an area with very little signal, having the radio on is just annoying because it never gets signal, so it drains battery forever, even more because it is constantly scanning. This is perfect for that.
Now if someone could make a widget for this switch...

How does the battery drain? If sprint disconnected your phone it won't keep searching for a network. I have my old phone that laid for over 5 days without charge when I hot my evo... that was both the moment and intercept

It will still actually be connected to the network, you just wont be able to make calls or get texts. This is required for all cell phones, so you can still call 911, or call the carrier to re-activate the phone if you ever want to.

Mobile network greyed out

For some reason my 3g keeps disconnecting. In settings the mobile network option is greyed out, stuck on "turning on". The only thing that fixes it is a reboot.

No one has any idea why this happens?
Is your phone stock?
it seems to just show that when the phone is idle, not updating, sending/receiving, etc. i have no way to prove this, just a theory.

I had that problem when I was running adrylalyne's Vanilla FrankenROM. It's the sole reason why I had to quit running it. It was a seriously annoying once-in-a-while thing at first but once I'd been running it for about 24 hours, it seemed to happen ALL THE TIME and got to the point where sometimes even a reboot wouldn't fix it. I haven't had it on any other ROM, though.
I was running the leaked radio (2.05?) when I had that ROM. Now that I've got 2.15, I've been thinking about giving it another shot.

No, the connection completely goes away. It's not just "I can't see the 3G symbol"... The phone actually has NO data connection and it seems impossible to get it to come back without a reboot.
2.15 radio fixed that for me. Using first leak Rom still.
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
in order to get rid of this, you'd need to find which file or which portion of that file controls the signal indicator on the phone, and replace it with an older version of that file, from before this "idle" indicator began.
maybe the google holds the answers you seek?

Good to know. I think I will try that FrankenROM again, then.
i'm unrooted and on stock OS, just got my incredible yesterday...so far i've noticed that it seems to just stay dormant, whenever i open an app that connects to the network, it automatically lights up the indicator and starts using the data, and it doesn't seem to prevent me from actually sending or receiving data, so i don't know how i would tell if it's actually no connection or just an "idle" indicator. how did you come to that conclusion?

What you see is normal. The 3G (or 1X) indicator only lights when the data connection is being used. The problem here is that there was no data connection. I would attempt to do anything that used the data connection and it would not connect. No email, no internet, no Nav, no nothing. The programs would all open, but could not download anything.
Agreed, that's sort of what I was implying, I was referring to the OP. so the connection issues are Rom based, not related with the gray indicators. Just because its gray doesn't mean you don't have connection. Clarifying for the next person who stumbles across this thread.

To the OP, this happened to me today using Sky Raider Sense 2.5.2. I also had to restart, so it's not only you that has the problem.

What he was talking about being greyed out is when you go into Menu> Settings> Wireless & Networks, the place where you check to turn Mobile networks on and off is greyed out with the text of "Turning on..." below.

Same thing happened to me over the weekend. I was in a tiny town in Texas that apparently had no 3g and I was unable to do anything that used the data connection. Reboot didn't work, neither did changing the Mobile Directory Number to all zeros when pressing ##program>NAM-General (as was suggested on a different forum which I cannot link to). What sucks is that it's highly unlikely I can duplicate this problem since there is probably good 3g coverage around the verizon store in the city where I live. I called verizon and the person said something about that area not having access to the data network, which I don't believe because when I was screwing with the settings under ##program I managed to get a text message. My wife's Samsung Vibrant (I know, different network) had no 3g but she was still able to access all apps that required the data network.
When my wife's Incredible was stock, this happened to her. It wouldn't connect to 3G. When going into settings and checking it out, "Mobile Network" was all grayed out. After LONG discussions with Verizon Tech Dept, 2 factory resets later, they found the problem to be on their end with the phone being "lost" on their system. They reset something (didn't tell me what) and bingo! her phone had 3G again.
I just had it happen to me. Reboot fixed it, but I'd like to know why its happening so I can tell my friends at VZW to look into it...
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
Still happening to me. I told the tech that a bunch of people in the forums were saying it was a problem on their end, something about my phone needing to be removed from and then added back to the data plan, and they told me that they'd look into it. Eventually the 3g came back on its own like it always has when I have this problem, and the next day I got a text from verizon saying the issue had been fixed (which I doubt consisted of anything more than someone having the system send me a text saying the issue had been fixed). I've had this problem when my phone was stock, when I updated to the 2.05 baseband, and now that I've rooted and installed skyraider. Not exactly the experience I anticipated when I left the iphone 3g...
noticed another thing, idk if related...my gmail will "quit" working...meaning, it shows i have new emails inside the app, but they haven't pulled to my phone yet. the refresh button in the app, and the sync now button under accounts don't work, i had to do a nand wipe and restore a file from a day ago. i think it's app related, because it always seemed to happen after i updated some apps in the market, but one of the times (this last time) i didn't update the apps, i deleted them and it still happened. all other data and network connections work fine, only gmail. prolly not related, but thought i'd throw it out there

Losing 3G

For some odd reason, my rooted d2 is losing the 3G, requiring a reset. This usually happens when the phone returns from being locked. Not every time.
Is this a stock rooted D2 or are you running a custom ROM?

no custom roms
The only mods I made are rooting, clockwork recovery. I have not used any roms. I googles it, and found that many people (read mostly about droid x) have the same issue. They also do the same thing (power down, and reboot). *228 does not fix this, its a froyo issue.

3G dropping with WIFI enabled
Mine does this too, and is also stock 2.2 brand new and rooted, but I think it was doing it before rooting. Have you tried disabling the WIFI notfication? I think maybe it keeps dumping 3G when it detects WIFI available in the area. When I disable WIFI it seems to hold 3G OK.

I tried this today, and I will update if that helps. For others trying this, first you need to turn on the wifi, then UNCHECK (so the check mark is not green) the Network notification box, then turn off the wireless. Thanks.
If you get a WIFI connection with internet, your 3G icon will disappear. It's supposed to be like that.

battery tip,

Here is a battery tip
Disable Data on ur phone, If ur not surfing the web (turn on data when u need it )
Calls and Text still go thru
Hold down power and the menu will come up then click on deactivate network
OR
This also can be done in extended controls Or Quick Settings
MAKES A BIG DIFFERENCE !
so far i got
14h 44m unpluged and i have 46% Left on Axura 2.2.5.9 ( i knoe 2.2.6 is out i just find 2.2.5.9 better)
Wow. You're a genius! Haha. This has been known for awhile due to obvious reasons. In fact there are apps that will turn your data off/on whenever your screen is sleeping/awake.

No, just turn it off manually. Those automatic apps are pretty pointless imo. You don't use data every time the screen is on, they just use more battery by constantly switching and giving the user no freedom.

dunno about anyone else but when I push send to make a call my data icon turns off and disappears until I hang up.
I don't think GSM supports simultaneous data and voice.
I think powering off the phone when not making calls will save even more battery.
Seriously, I use my phone for a lot of things that require background data. Seems silly to me to turn off something critical for me using my phone just to save some battery.
so far on nero 5 i havent even reconditioned ( im going to do it anyways later) , but its given me over 16 hours of battery, and thats all i need, i just need 10 hours max, from the time i wake up to the time i go to sleep, if it can give me that im good.

Seriously though I am using juice defender on my evo and it basically turns data off while ur screen is off. It has worked pretty well. It was off the charger from 730am yesterday till 11pm last night and I still had 55 percent. Of course I worked all day and my phone saw very little use yesterday.

What keeps enabling Background Data??

I am continually having to disable the Background Data option on my DZ, because something keeps re-enabling it in the background without my knowledge. This happens several times a day. How can I tell which app is enabling it?
Could be Market. You cant log in if you dont have background data enabled. So maybe its got a mind of its own and turns it on.
sometimes could be your people or facebook or email syncing in the background

Auto-syncing is already disabled. Unfortunately it hasn't helped.
I haven't flashed the phone before so the prospect of doing it (and potentially bricking it) concerns me a little. I'm on software version 1.82.161.1 - is this a fairly recent version?

If I'm not missing anything you don't want your phone to connect at all? Then put something invalid for internet connection APN.
I've already done that. It's the drain on battery that I was concerned about - i.e. continually trying to connect

why dont you just disable mobile network untill you need it?
That's what I meant when I said I'd done it - I have the mobile network disabled by default. Presumably with background data enabled it will still attempt to connect frequently, and consume power, even if data is disabled?

What the heck are you using your phone for then? If you dont want any mobile data, just turn on airplane mode and then enable WiFi for data.
U sound a bit too paranoid. The chances of bricking your phone from flashing your phone one time are slim to none. Sounds like the rom is borked to me. It reminds me of people who are scared to death to click anything in windows cause there scared there gonna break something. There are people on here who WANT to brick there phone cause they want to send it into repair and not have tmobile see its s-off and can't even make the phone brick when purposely trying to.
You seem smart enough, as long as you can read your not gonna mess nothing up! They make these electronic devices idiot proof cause 99% of the users of them are idiots! (Xda users not included). If they were that easy to bust no one would even use a smart phone cause you would be hearing about it every day from all your friends/acquaintances!

Funnily enough I use it to make phone calls. When I need the occasional bit of data (maybe 2-3 times a day) I'll switch on wifi or 3G temporarily for that purpose. That way I may still have some battery left by the evening. Unless there's something else that keeps starting up and draining the battery of course....

Honestly, like the other poster said I think you're being a bit too paranoid. Just let your phone do its thing. Turn off mobile data, and turn off any app's auto-sync functions. If you absolutely don't need your phone to use data other than occasional WiFi it won't make a difference. You're not going to lose battery in any significant way with what these apps are doing.

Also, if you only need data 2-3 times per day, you should stop paying for a data plan.
I'm on a PAYG plan - 20p per Mb - so it's not a problem.
Incidentally I had a first attempt at rooting yesterday - followed the noob guide elsewhere in this forum but didn't get very far. I'm reasonably technical (a former developer) but the whole rooting thing is far from painting by numbers.
I have an open thread somewhere else on this issue

H870 oreo 8.0 giving me an alert every time i turn data ON or OFF

So pretty much what the title says, i just updated to 8.0 today on my european version, does anyone of you know how to turn this off? When i turn it on it says data charges may apply and when i want to turn it off it just asks me to confirm, its not at all practical.
It's the same on LG V30 Oreo. I don't think it can be disabled unfortunately.

that's crappy thinking. what would happen if everyone thought the same with every setting? what if you had to confirm everytime you want to enter an app? anyway, being used with a much more intuitive action then switching to a new one, which is not intuitive at all, sucks.

Because having it always on drains the battery faster, smartass. I turn it on only when I need something. Some of us don't need/want to be online 24/7. And with this stand-by drain I got after Oreo every bit of battery counts. The phone lasts like 70% of what it used to on Nougat. (And yes, I did a factory reset.)

Are you sure that phones have mobile data to be 24/7 online, mate? xD
It is indeed a smartphone and not a 24/7-should-be-online-machine. When I want to sleep, take a nap, or just not be bothered by emails, facebook etc, I turn wifi and mobile data off. I'm not putting my phone on silent 'cause I want people to be able to call me if there's something going on. Also, I just turn it off then I'm at home and got wifi instead. Aaaaaand also I'd like to have at least a decent UX on this damn phone if the support is crappy af anyway.
Is just a click, nothing more. And if you need to turn on and turn off data 100 times a day (just you and some of your friens..) just click that button 100 times. I'm on android from donut, and I never turned off data.
