So my dad lost his gmail password... - EVO 4G General

Whe he bought his evo he went to the sprint store. Long story short a rep set it up for him, he told the rep what he wanted and what his security question was. Why he didnt do it himself, is beyond me. Anyway, now I rooted his evo for him and went to restore gmail/contacts etc and he cannot remember his password. So we played the google games and emailed them etc etc they are saying they cannot give us our password because we didnt give them enough info to prove its us. So now he's short on his contacts right?

Sounds like it. Unless he has them backed up already somewhere (you can export to a csv or xls file when you're logged in) he's probably screwed. You should be able to get google to reset it by giving them the right information, but sometimes you have to have that set up ahead of time (like a recovery email account or something of that sort).
See if he can dig through his brain and remember it.

yeah ohwell haha. i mean I thought he would have known it, but I bet the rep ****ed it up. Hmm.. Ifilled out the form again but I doubt its going to work. kinda crazy that there is no other way for them to give it to you. I mean I see they have an SMS recovery option but no where to put in your phone or anything.

Yeah that would have to be set up ahead of time...otherwise, anyone could steal your password by providing their phone number. How is google going to authenticate you without a lot of information besides a password? They're just trying to cover their asses.
I totally understand your frustrations though, I had the same problem with steam, and when they said they sent an email to the recovery account, it was to my old hotmail address that I hadn't used in years...huge headache.

true true, but there has to be some way around it. Or something haha.

There is a way around it. Google ask's you to setup and alternate email address for recovery and I get the screen all the time that ask me to add a phone number just incase. So its not that there isnt away around it. Its that your dad hasnt taken the proper steps to avoid the situation.
Also click the contacts button, go to menu, and click export/import, back up your contacts be exporting them to the sd card or restore your contacts by importing them from the sd card. However, your dad doesnt sound like the kind of guy that exported them to an sd card. I am basicly only telling you this so you can make him aware of the option so he doesnt loose them in the futur.

Not when you set up an account on the phone tho. He never uses it let along on a PC. So that option wouldnt be available to him. Unless they changed it since I signed up on my Hero a year or so ago.

I had the same thing happen to me but my daughter set up phone to have the pattern password and she is 5 so she didn't know what she did. I tried to figure it out but couldn't. After a number of tries I got locked out and had to enter gmail but I forgot that too. Called Sprint and they got it for me it was saved to my aol account he gave it to me and end of story good luck

if you backed up before you flashed you can restore that, make a backup in titanium backup the green files, and accounts and sync (red), go back to the new rom and install titanium by downloading from their website then restoring your backups

Well I unrevo. His phone, and didn't think about it. I was unaware that he didn't know his password.lol

if he remembers the email address and the answer to the security question you can reset the password on the gmail website

or take his contacts off an older phone as a last resort!

Yeah thats the route he'll most likely have to take. He didn't add many new numbers but he did add some key ones... Oh well, mofo shouldn't have lost his password lol.

The rep did nothing wrong, its not his/her fault. Sorry, but your dad should have remembered his password, or wrote it down somewhere.

But I know for a fact she spelled the secuirty question wrong. he uses it all the time and he hasnt changed it and well he was born there. So he knows that, but that too wont work.

you tried all spelling variations that the rep might have typed in?

yeah man.. its ok though. Im not here for people to argue back and forth tho ya know? Not saying you at all, just in general. Ive seen gmail/google sign-ins act funny before too. Like when I googled it earlier alot of people had to disable CAPTCHA for instance on the PC to make it work. And even when I sign in on my PC I get a CAPTCHA even with the right passworl. Guess its a security measure.. too secure IMO>

Evo Tip for New Users - Only one chance at google account

Ok,
Just going to through this up in a thread of its own. If this info needs to be added to a newbie's thread fine, but I have not seen one.
This is a lesson learned with the Evo that as a NEW android user I was completely unaware of:
--You MUST have a GMail account. An old Google account will not work.
--You only get ONE CHANCE at entering the correct account for your phone set up.
It seems that while other android phones have tricks to work around changing accounts...the Evo does NOT. You must do the factory reset from...Menu > Settings > Privacy > Factory data reset.
YES you will lose all the screen customizations you made, all the emails you have set up, all the settings you wanted.
NO you do not lose data as all my test pictures are still there.
The GMail account must be set up BEFORE you try to add it to the phone. (This seems to be the gist of lots of stuff on internet and this is way I did it. Set it up through my old Google account before adding to the phone during the set up process.)
There you go. Very important and frustrating tip for those of us that are new to android and especially to the Evo.
....
are you sure?
you can't just got Accounts and Sync and change it there?
I can't imagine why not
You can't go to menu>settings>accounts and sync>google and remove your Google account?
if your rooted you can easily change google accounts
i found this goodie back in the hero days messing around with accounts.db
adb shell
sqlite3 /data/system/accounts.db "delete from accounts where type = 'com.google';"

Luv you too.
No, you cannot just go Accounts and Sync...tried it. When you go into the google account you have a button below that says...'Remove Account'. When you try you get two pop-ups. First says you will lose account information. Second says you must do the factory reset.
So...anyone else want to call me a troll before they actually TRY what they are suggesting? 'Cause I tried three different approaches I found when searching. None worked.

Or maybe I just don't know any better, I don't have this problem with my phone, I've accidentally entered my Google account incorrectly and I always just re-entered it and it worked just fine.
My first post wasn't directed in any way negative. I just didn't know any better
Well, I'm pretty sure I've had my gmail account for about 3 years and it synced right up; worked on my mom's as well and then I made a new one for the dad.

Then you aren't being entirely clear on what your point is. I have no idea what you are talking about given that I know for a fact that:
A> I am usually drunk when I try roms, which usually require a full wipe and account info on 1st boot...which I usually screw up.
and most importantly,
B> That the day I got my phone I forgot my password for a good 5 minutes at radio shack and tried wrong passwords repeatedly until I got it right.
Not to mention
C> I have changed gmail accounts multiple times, even in those brief hours while I was still 100% stock.
...and I have no idea what a "google account" is otherwise. It very may well be 'a thing', but I have no idea what it is.
If I managed to evade your point, please--for the sake of the forum and your own well being--articulate it a little better.

Your Google account is basically your Gmail account. All though I do believe it is a seperat account. It also allows you to link youtube, latitude and a few other Google tools or services.
Hmmm, Home screen, menu, settings, applications, gmail and or market, then clear data, and or clear cache ... worked for me... then I had to re-enter my password and user name, ill be damned if i didn't screw it up. Not even drunk, course i didn't forget it for 10 minutes, just about 30 seconds.

That's what I assumed, but, you never know. Google is a little to smart to go for anything less than a unified ID. Having a handful of disparate and overlapping accounts (and their associated 'sign up process') seems like an annoying waste of time, storage and bandwidth.
Btw, I'm not trying to be a ****. If you are in fact having these issues it may be an isolated incident.
I had the same issue as the original poster. I believe what is being said is that the "google" account you enter the very first time, is the one used for your identity on the phone, and to change it requires a factory reset on the Evo.
Personally I have 3 google accounts, one is gmail and the other two are google apps. All of my contacts are under a google apps account.
Well, turns out, if you enter your gmail account not knowing the difference when you originally setup the phone, it stays stuck in there and won't let you change it without doing a full factory reset. I realized I needed to use my google apps account instead and had to factory reset to change it.
This is of course before I attempted any rooting fun, I had just came from WinMo on a Touch Diamond previously and hadn't read up on how any of that worked at the time.
Hope this helps clarify things.
Can't you just go to setup and redo your setup??

Well, condiering I've had my gmail account for over 3 years and used it to set my evo up with, it's not new - it was 3 years ago but it sure wasn't new when I got my evo. Therefore, an old gmail/google account works just fine.
And, I just added me other gmail account without any problems. Gave me the options to sync mail, contacts, ect., too.
I think were missing your point here...or something.

I know what you mean, in a way. I guess it just depends on the person and the what your needs are. iGoogle for instance, you can set up your own home page, you can add all kinds of different widgets like latitude, translate, local search, wiki, tv guide. You can be updated when concerts and such are appear in your town. I love latitude, I just link it to my phone, if anyone ever stole my phone I could just go to my google page on my pc and id automatically know the location and I'm pretty sure theres a free service for this same thing that adds the ability to send messages, not texts, to the phone and wipe it if you want. Pretty dang useful if you ask me. I love it, I just open mozilla and everything is there, mail, rss feeds and news, weather everything

Ok, this makes since, I guess I never noticed because I have one account. I KNOW that if you enter in an incorrect user/pass it will just promt so. then just re-enter

Something very weird happened with my screen...

So I was looking at gmail, I backed out of a message back to the conversation list when I got a pop up stating that there was trouble authenticating worth gmail and a captcha (the graphic word human tester, I think that is what you call it) box popped up. I entered the text, it failed, repeat, then on the next failure notice, the screen got static-y, and continued to get more and more static-y... White had dots of color throughout _ it looked like old uhf that was barely coming in.
Anyway, the screen became unresponsive and a reboot cleared it up, but I am very curious as to what happened and if out is likely to happen again.
Anyone heard of this?

I'll probably catch a barrage of comments for this...but I am 100% sure someone has created a virus on android...long story but I fell victim to the exact same thing the other day. Next thing I know my gmail was hacked.

Something or someone messed with my gmail a few days ago also, I had to keep changing my password to get into gmail or the market. I then noticed that whatever it was had tried to send like 20 some spam emails to everyone in my gmail contacts which google blocked! The only odd ip I could find was somewhere in the UK? Yeah, whatever it is it keeps hasseling for email confirmation. The weird thing is you can by pass it and still access all of googles apps. But the second you punch in the password and captcha...it catches ya. Only thing I've downloaded in the past week was Gun Bros.

Don't know why it sounds so crazy to people, if you research even just lightly, you'll see that there IS Droid malware out already. It is like anything else that gets exploited.

VERY wrong, and I think it is because most people do not have any experience with Linux. The average user is Windows or Mac, and only know that Linux is just another Operating System. If someone were to sit down and actually take the time and effort, they could do some very scary things to/with someone's Droid.

I have not installed anything new - and I just moved to EB01 VooDoo from EB01 this weekend, starting nice and fresh with EB01 odined into place, wipe for kicks, VooDoo install via CWM, and restore of all my apps... so nothing new app wise, and nothing unusual otherwise.
I also run Lookout and although I am not certain just HOW trusted it is, Lookout says everything is OK. It certainly scans every new and restored app as they install... but again, I do not know just how trustworthy is really is.
And that was the first time and so far only time that weirdness has occurred... For you other guys who haveseen it, did it come and go, all in a burst, or just once?
No problems since...
I have seen this on my fascinate as well. It is not malware by any means. From what I have read in the past on this is it has to deal with an account sync issue. I have been getting these popups when I flash the 2.2 roms. When I had the popups if I go into the accounts and uncheck the sync and then recheck them to have to then resync I do not seem to get them anymore.

[Q] AHH what did I do??!!

Ok so a few hours ago, my phone is working perfectly fine. Then all I did was change to LauncherPro to check it out, clicked the contacts app and it somehow sent me to the dialer, I then checked the contacts tab in the dialer and there were NO contacts. So, I went back to my usual ADW and my contacts are gone there too!!
Yes, I made sure it was "all contacts" and I treid resetting my phone several times but with no results. Another interesting thing I noticed, my MotoBlur account is GONE from my accounts. So, when I take my sim card out and turn my phone back on, the phone does not ask for me to put in my motoblur account (good thing?).
Could the lack of a motoblur account somehow deleted my contacts (I have no idea how I got rid of the motoblur account). I have made no backups of my contacts (sadly) so my only option that I know of is to manually add them back, but hopefully maybe someone can shed some light on this situation. TIA
Edit: losing contacts not a huge problem, can manually put them back, but still want to know how i got rid of motoblur account.
Thats very odd indeed, your blur account got deleted... have your tried simply adding it back I think this would also bring back your contacts and when you said you went back to standard launcher did you uninstall it? I installed launcherpro once but that never happened to me.

Also does anyone know where blur account info is house? Im in root explorer trying to find it with no luck, the only think I can imagine is (which I dont know how it would have happened) that one of your launchers did something to the root of where that information is house deleting the blur account but again I've never heard of this happening before
Edit: well this situation now makes two of us lmao while trying to solve your problem I seem to have replicated it. So now I just need to find out how to log back into blur... hey if anyone can it it would be greatly appreciated. So brief summery, I seem to have reset blur on my phone so that I am no longer logged into it I still have all my other emails and FB synced up but blur has disappeared and I cant find a way back in.

[Q] Help please, stolen N10

My parents, away on holiday, just had the holiday rental place turned over and their stuff stolen including the Nexus 10.
Is there Anything I should do? I don't think it had any bank details etc on it but does have parents email set up (so that needs a new password)
And has my gmail account linked to it, so that needs a new password.
Is there anything else?
If it matters, it's on stock ROM, I'd unlocked it to get stick mount working and titanium backup, think I left the bootloader unlocked.
Thanks

Change all relevant account details immediately. You'd be surprised what someone could get out of a login, especially if you were using a browser that caches/syncs password information (like Chrome). If you do use Chrome, you may want to clear all saved Chrome Sync data-- it's a pain, yes, but that's what you sign up for if you're going to use a syncing service.
In all likelyhood, your device is just going to get wiped and sold (sorry, but it's probably true unless they get confounded by a custom recovery [if you're using one]). Before you reset the password though, you may as well try to push one of the after-event anti-theft apps out on the market (like Android Lost or Plan B) to your tablet in case the thief is stupid enough to leave the tablet on or connect it to Wi-Fi. You never know!
You also may as well try to get your S/N and forward that to local authorities. You may get lucky.
Cheers.
I bought it for them as a present at Christmas so I guess my Google account may have the s/n. I also set it up for them so although mum created her own gmail account I think the tablet is still linked to mine. How do I push a theft app to it and NOT my nexus 4 or my old Desire (now my mum's mobile)?

Go to the Play Store online, search the names of the apps I mentioned, and hit the INSTALL button. It'll bring up a window showing compatible devices; choose the relevant one and away you go. Keep in mind that these are by far and away not bulletproof solutions, and it's more of a "why not" thing than something to rely on.

Thanks. From my phone I can install them on it (my phone), but can't seem to push the app to another device.
Oh well. This is what insurance is for.

The insurance is going to be a lot more reliable than these apps. But yes, you can do it from your phone-- but you won't be able to do it in the Play Store app. You need to do it from the browser version (just navigate to play.google.com, and if it redirects you to the app, go to Settings > App > Play Store > Clear defaults and try again).
Excellent! Prey is now pushing....if it connects that is. So....do I wipe or do I go for location and a photo? Wipe I think!

You may as well go for the location first and send the wipe immediately after. If the app is any good it should handle the requests sequentially.

Locked out of Phone, No Google Password

Hello!,
Just recently purchased an unlocked S7 SM-G935F phone several weeks back, and got locked of the google account. I can't get password from google because I think the password was compromised. Google refuses to provide the password or reset it. So, my question is how can I modify this phone without having the developers tab tap 7 times get back to it's original firmware? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!
Sorry but you didn't give enough information.
First of all, if the phone is not yours, give it back to the owner or don't try to access data without passwords: it is illegal, though impossible too.
If it's your legitimate property you can reset your google password with the methods you configured. If you find no way suggested to recover your password you will have to contact directly google customer service and hope they will try to verify your identity and give you someway access to your data, and device too.
The thing of developer option it's not correlate to your problem, maybe you want to install a custom aoftware (rom, kernel etc) but you didn't say that. And anyway there are tons of guides which you maybe already read. If your device is locked there's no way to recover it without your google password. Don't try flash strange things you will brick it.
Suspect

Nope, it's my phone. I purchased it several weeks ago as mentioned before. I have a receipt from Amazon as proof. I honestly got locked out of the phone and can't recall the exact password because I probably tossed it away. I've called google 4 times still no avail. I would like to install a custom rom if possible. Any other suggestions? Id be willing to donate a few bucs.

Then go back to the Amazon seller and ask him/her.
I'm sorry but if you write here on xda you will likely find people who know what is going on. And anyone would be suspicious if you're asking to bypass a security lock. There are 2 cases, one is that that ain't not your device, the other is that you're so dumb to lock a 700$ device with a password you don't remember saying bull****s like " the password was compromised " or, which is fantastic, " I called Google 4 times" like if they have a number to call to get Samsung assistance. I'm really happy theres no way to acces phone without correct psw, but if you want you can keep waisting your time.Mods please throw away this tief
You forgot or "lost" your Google password? This doesn't sound right.
Why not recover your Google password using their online system?
"I cant recall the password because I probably tossed it away"
Love the "probably". Can be hard to keep track of bulls***.
Make your mind up - find a lie and stick to it. Did you probably toss it away or is the password "compromised"?
Good luck trying to fool anyone in here to help you out with your "problem".
If it was legitimately yours, then you would've set up a fingerprint and not only a password, don't you think that would've been smart? That way you would've not been "locked out of phone". Emphasis on "If it was legitimately yours".
Smell test is clear...
Password was compromised, password was tossed away... sounds legit!
I've actually done what this guy has but I did it on a freshy right outta the box with me swing the first owner. However this does seem suspect I would help if I knew you were the first and only owner but seeing you're not I cant.
I'm in the same boat. My father-in-law somehow got his S7 edge locked and forgot his google password at the same time. He went to a Verizon store, but they only told him to recover via google. He shipped the phone to me to try and help him unlock it. Google password recovery is by 3 methods:
1) send a text to the phone. Of course this doesn't help because I can't unlock the phone. I hear the tone when the text comes in, but can't retrieve it
2) Sends a code to another email associated with the google account. He swears its his daughter's email address, but when we put that code in, google says it doesn't recognize her email as authorized
3) tell google what month & year the account was created. He can't remember that either
At this point, I'm willing to pay someone to fix it. I believe it has the newest Nougat firmware. I tried many suggestions from YouTube, but I can't even get to the menu where you connect to a wifi signal.
Anyone willing to help or just think I stole the phone like the previous guy?

Put the SIM into another phone and receive the SMS. Simple.

THANK YOU!. At least I made some progress. Now I find myself in an endless loop...the phone keeps saying "This device was reset. To continue, sign in with a Google Account that was previously synced on this device".
My father-in-law has 2 Google accounts. Having put his sim in my phone, I was able to reset passwords for both of these Google accounts, but the phone doesn't like either of them.
Any more suggestions?
Oh. Without the sim, I was finally prompted to connect to a wifi.
Is it possible that no Google account was synced with this device?

I've fixed (can now log in) two of my father-in-law's google accounts. Its just that the phone isn't recognizing either of them now. I don't know if he has a 3rd account of if it was possible to set up the phone without one. I'm on Verizon with an iPhone so I don't know anything about android or google.
Read that you have to wait 24 hours after changing Google password, so I'll try it again tonight.
the scotsman - You are my F*CKING hero! 24 hours after resetting the google password, the S7 edge recognizes it and is now unlocked. My father-in-law (& mother-in-law) thank you.
