[KERNEL] TnT Kernel with CIFS and NTFS support - G Tablet Android Development

What does this new boot.img/kernel do?
It allows you to mount windows shares on your tablet. That allows you to play music, videos, etc.
WARNING: For right now this is breaking angry birds, and some other apps.
Kernel: Stock 2.6.32.9 with CIFS/NTFS (compiled by me)
Ramdisk: TnT 3389
You can setup your windows share information in Cifsmanager from market. I haven't been able to get it working, but hopefully someone else can. Some pictures available here: http://www.ez-pad.net/android-1858-1-1.html . You will have to leave the last line blank, do not copy what the link shows. The rest of the lines do give you a guide.
Download:
TnT 3389 CIFS, NTFS http://www.multiupload.com/JMJ61RPBJC (tested with TnT 3389)
VEGAn B4 CIFS, NTFS http://www.multiupload.com/5YX1XBI4CN
Install:
Place download on /sdcard
Boot into clockwork
Run it as an update.zip
If you see gtabdevs logo, you know it worked

can i use on vegantab build? if yes. which file i should download? with vpn or no vpn?

Hi, is it compatible with Folio 100? (same hardware I guess)
Thanks!

First off, thanks for making this happen. Mounting through cifsmanager does work however something got borked with apps that are on the sdcard (i.e. angry birds)
Cannot restore via titanium backup; install fails through market.
I assume reapplying vegan.b4 update will replace the boot.img to fix.
Was there something I should've done in clockwork before applying this?
P.S. applied the non VPN version

I'm pretty sure something needs to be changed to work with Vegan. I only tested it with TnT so far.

I'm not sure that it works on vegan, i'll build one later for it. I put beside the VPN one that wifi doesn't work, so unless you don't need wifi... That is there for someone more advanced to look into finding updated wifi drivers that work with VPN.

It will not work with the Folio, the chipset is the same, but touchscreen, etc is not.

any possibility you could compile a cifs.ko module separately for the advent vega kernel please?
i pulled ar6000.ko from the device and found the vermagic string with a hex editor incase it helps:
vermagic=2.6.32.9_P10_v1.06.5_20101213_DIX_UK-gb9b276c-dirty SMP preempt mod_unload modversions ARMv7

Btw, in vegan under settings/sdcard shows as unmount in progress eventhough it also displays total use/remaining space. Don't know if this is typical.
Should also point out you mean NFS support, not NTFS.
Again, thank you so much for this.

Ah, cool beans. Sorry I misunderstood.

Thank you, sir! The Gtab just got another bump in the usability department. I can only imagine what lies ahead of us.

Was getting ready to update to this kernel...then I read the warning about Angry Birds. LOL
What exactly is breaking in these apps when using CIFS?

I think the kernel patch we received didn't include some of the latest changes. Therefore there are some vold incompatibilities i think, causing issues with apps that need /sdcard.

Major step taken here! Can't wait until it's stable.

Yes Angry Birds is now broken and will not install again either. I get an error. I think it said code 18. This is foreign to me.

For whatever is worth, mount your SDCard on your computer, and while mounted, install Angry Birds RAWRAWRAR!

cifsmanager can not be install on my vegan build after i update this.
and all angry birds were gone.

Like I said, for angry birds: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=10133101&postcount=17
And..about the CIFSManager is kinda "lol"......I installed it correctly, I see it in my app drawer, but if I click on it, it will say its not installed. THOUGH, if I go to market, search for CIFSManager, will tell me its installled, click on the app and then go to the "open" button, it will open! LOL

Launch CIFSManager from something other than the stock TnT launcher. It works from LP.

Speed Fix?

Any chance of bringing this speed fix by mimocan to the Captivate?
Supposedly some international version Galaxy S'ers are sitting pretty with 1700's Quadrant scores because of this fix among other firmware flashes, etc.
Can we replicate this for the Captivate?
Here's a little inspiration:

Isn't the stock firmware in this? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=731989
I've compiled kernels for linux before on my own PCs, and from what I can tell, he's just added ext3/ext4 support and customized the init.rc to mount the partition at boot time. I should dig around and see what I can find.
MANG~
I will worship the ground you walk if you can get this to work on Captivate.
I bricked my phone many times trying to make this work. Apparently when mimocan's kernel installed, external sd card can not be detectect and g sense will be off 90 degrees. however, all buttons do what they are suppose to do.
Anyways, please please help with this MOD. Alot of us Captivate owners are looking for this fix.
You will be my new hero if you get this working on the captivate.

You ain't kidding either! That fix is the [email protected]! I've finally gotten my Captivate to run decently with LauncherPro but it's that nothing compared to what it could do with this fix. It's a shame really, we have KILLER hardware and the software implementation has seriously crippled it.
designgears already posted the stock firmware... no? Twenty bucks to anyone who can get my captivate up to these benchmark scores.
Koush posted up the stock kernel too.

im in for 20$ for a fix, even using SetCPU to 1000mhz whenever the screen is on I still get little stutters that feel like memory read issues, buddy was just over with his froyo nexus 1 and it was amazingly fast.
20$ is cheaper than the 35$ return see

it appears ext2/3 are already supported...
On my stock Captivate kernel /proc/filesystems shows ext2 and ext3 are already supported. Only boot scripts should need to be changed to use them. Also interesting, cramfs and romfs are supported but unused.
I tried this fix with ext3 and ext4, it didn't work just a black screen. Check this reply i posted to see my steps
vietphunguyen said:
Yep Ext4 nor Ext3 works on Captivate, it just goes to Black screen, Here are my steps below:
1.) Rooted Captivate
2.) Installed Busybox
3.) Made GParted ISO, booted computer up with GParted, Made the FAT32 2.5GB and EXT3/4 1.5GB (no labels and I have a 4GB SD)
4.) Put phone into Download mode (cmd: adb reboot recovery)
6.) Selected the v3/v4 for PDA, successfully worked, phone rebooted up fine
5.) adb shell, su, ran "mount -o remount,rw rootfs /" to mount the ext3/4 file system as writeable
6.) Ran the busybox commands (listed on main post of this thread)
7.) rebooted and it went to the Samsung Galaxy i9000 screen, then the 3g/att animation, then the galaxy S loading screen, then it turned black, when i tried ext3 and ext4,
8.) Cries, hoping someone finds a fix for captivate

Good luck with that. I hope it works for you. We really need this fix until Samsung can fix the "bottle neck" but that probably wont happen until froyo is ready.

New Gmail 2.3 Won't Install (WITH FIX)

Gmail 2.3 is in the market now but when I try to install it I get "Package file was not signed correctly."
I'm currently using Gmail 2.2.1. I even found the apk online and tried to install it manually but it just says installation unsuccessful. Anybody else seeing the same problem? Any fix?
FIX:
Here is the easiest fix I could find from within this thread...
Uninstall 2.2.1 with titanium or root explorer, reboot, then install from the market.
Mine installed fine and runs fine... I'm rooted/s-off and installed the deoxed 2.2 leak and running kings #4... (just for reference)
Same here. Installed fine.

I tried rebooting the phone but that didn't help. I guess I could try to do it via adb, but I was just curious if others saw the same problem.

Virtuous 2.7, won't install from the market.

EDIT: just saw this from rmk
"I know about it and expected it. The reason this is occurring is because our Gmail version had to be patched to work with Voice Search. I had been considering a new release the past few days anyway so this will act is a nice catalyst.
Since I am here posting, here's what I was thinking (please provide comments/feedback on it):
I want to move more apps back to /system/app. Prior to Virtuous Buddy and/or EZ-Customizer it was compelling to move as many apps as possible to /data/app. At this point, it just adds another place to have to go to remove stock apps. My thought is, it would be easier for you guys to either use Buddy or Customizer for EVERY stock app.
The trigger for this is two-fold. First, I discovered a bug in the /data/app logic which is just becoming increasingly complicated to deal with. And second, if everything is in one place, I can modify the scripts to move disabled apps rather than delete them, so you can easily toggle them off and on via buddy.
Our end result is the same, you can still easily remove everything, it just becomes simplified. I was thinking this next release would be 3.0 (given the magnitude of the change). Following 3.0, every upgrade would be made available as a small patch, like we had from 2.5 to 2.6.
What do you guys think?"

I searched "gmail" in Root Explorer and found /system/app/gmail.apk and tried to rename that but it would not work. Just keeps reverting to .apk even though it says rename successful.
Could I try moving the gmail.apk to another folder and then downloading?

Didn't want to pay for root explorer, but this works:reboot into recovery, mount /system, then use the command prompt to move the Gmail.apk. Reboot and download and install from the market.

NTFS Support

Hi,
I really miss the missing NTFS support. My 2,5" 500GB portable hard drive would be perfect for the A500, but some files are over 4GB (MKVs for example)
Please make a Custom Rom, that supports this.
Thanks in advance!
Simple answer it cant be done as NTFS is MS closed source. the the movies smaller if u need it. thats what i did with my 1TB drive.
But the Archos 101 can read NTFS...
my guess on that would be that archos licensed it from MS.
Try this apk file. It was done for the G-Tab but it might work.

I don't have this device so I can't test it.

I've manage to pack all the needed files into an apk so you no longer need to mess around with adding files to system/xbin and writing up scripts.
Please see the market for the latest version (Now called drive mount)
https://market.android.com/details?id=au.dach.drivemount
As above there could be some problems with the Tiamat rom and I'll look into it as I get further information.
Root is still needed

CIFS module load problem

So I think, I don't have this module in kernel(I had Fugu Ultra), so flashed an Fugu 2.4 800MHz, which description says that it support CIFS. OK, it ran good, but again error Mount:No such device.
Mount Manager have an option to see which modules are loaded, and to load other
So in RootExplorer I found an cifs.ko in /lib/modules/ and put path to it. After accepting the choise, Mount Manager just crashed...
Why it isn't loading this module at start, and why it's crashing when I want to add it?

I like to use shell commands, try this. Make sure that the mountpoint is created (in my example it's /mnt/cifs)
Code:
# mount -t cifs -o user=<username>,password=<password> //<server ip>/<share name> <mountpoint>
Example :
Code:
# mount -t cifs -o user=myname,password=mypassword //192.168.0.1/media /mnt/cifs
And it doesn't work
I tried even guest and error too
User, mean user in Windows, right? Password, mean PW in Windows? If yes, what when I don't have password on my admin account?
I need to do something on my PC? On the phone I just created a folder /mnt/cifs.
Don't know what's wrong here
I'm dumb, Vista in default have some password set. :x
So yes, it works but have another problem...
Music plays great, but movies and games(thru FPSE, iso's on HDD) are laggin. Every ~1 sec there is short lag. On the router, wifi led is flashing, but when game or movie stops for a while it stop's blinking too which means no data is transferred.
When FPSE iso is on my SDCard, everything is smooth.
I've changed everything in WIFI router settings, but without effect.
It's something with CIFS module, or with router? Don't have other router, and other WIFI device

Don't compare a network / local disk = not the same thing
if you want more performance, don't use CIFS/Windows share protocol
If you still want, just google with something like "cifs performance tuning", you will get results. First, tweak server side (windows) and if it's not enougth, you could tweak client side (android linux).
OK, thanks for info, I'll look for it tomorrow.
But short question - it can work with satisfactory performance, which let me watch movies and play PSX games without this annoying stuttering?
OK, many changes to system registry, disabling some useless stuff and... nothing, it's still stuttering. Maybe little bit less, but it can be placebo ^^
So, you said "if you want more performance, don't use CIFS/Windows share protocol "
I have another option at android? Did you mean NFS?

[FIX] How to install Google+ (Google Maps Framework/App Incompatible With Device Fix)

I discovered a solution on how to make Google+ work on Phoenix OS. This might enable other apps to work as well, please report your findings.
Instructions:
Download and extract maps-framework.zip
Download latest Google+ APK (I used v9.18.0: APKMirror | Google Drive)
Using Root Explorer or a root file manager of your choice:
Copy com.google.android.maps.xml from the extracted folder and paste it into /system/etc/permissions. Perform a chmod of 644 on the file
Copy com.google.android.maps.jar from the extracted folder and paste it into /system/framework. Also perform a chmod of 644 on the file
To perform chmod in Root Explorer, click and hold on a file, click on the three menu buttons, click on Permissions, press Enter Octal, type in 644, and finally press OK twice. If you're using another root file manager, I could imagine the steps would be similar.
Restart Phoenix OS
Install Google+ APK that you downloaded earlier
Optional: If you want to update it to the latest version, open up the Play Store and update Google+ there.
How I discovered this solution is by trying to install Google+ APK through Lucky Patcher. When I tried to install it, it gave me this error message:

I performed a Google search on "Google Plus install failed missing shared library" and came up with these results which guided me to this solution:

Here's proof that it works:
Astounding work. Thank you so much!
Did you get it to work on your device?
Reinstalling Phoenix and testing today...
Edit: worked like a charm! Also discovered that it would work using the "nodpi" version of G+
It won't recognize that the device is compatible to install it through the Play Store, but it will allow manual installation from APKMirror ^.^
You are a gawd walking amongst mere mortals, good sir.

Thanks for the findings And yeah, initially you have to install it manually, but after you restart your device, you will be able to update it from the Play Store to the new version. And I'm just a regular human, like you and anybody else that's on these forums

And humble to boot
Anyway, I'll keep testing, but I suspect several failed installs are due to this same reason... we shall see.

Cool, hopefully everything works out for you What failed installs did you mention?
At this point I don't recall specifically which others didn't install, but I'll keep you posted if I run into any more.

Sounds good. If I have to, I will also try to experiment modifying the model number in build.prop and see what benefits that will bring. Also, I read online somewhere that installing an older version of Google+ might work without having to copy those two files into /system. I might experiment it if the time is right

Give it a try and see if it lets Instagram install. The worst that can happen is you will be able to install Google+
@meanhacker have you tried any newer gms versions to see if they allow syncing for more apps? I suspect that it's locked down by the devs due to China's restrictions.

I think I did, but it keeps saying that there was an error parsing the package... I will test out more. What about you?

I'm glad it helped you! Did you use this fix to make Google+ work or some other application?
