[THINK TANK] Desire HD under the hood / teardown / disassembly - Desire HD General

I noticed there are several questions in the Desire HD subforums relating to hardware-specific questions. For example, "is FM radio transmission possible" or "Does the HTC Desire HD support analog TV out via its USB connection".
Such questions could be answered if we take a glimpse at how the Desire HD looks from the inside. I have been searching for a disassembly (or teardown) for the Desire HD on the web, but I couldn't find one yet. I'm talking about something similar to this video ( youtube.com/watch?v=sXZqIjtFoAU ... disassembling the "Desire without HD") or this iFixIt photo guide ( ifixit.com/Teardown/Nexus-One-Teardown/1654/1 ... tearing down the Nexus One).
I see two possible solutions to this problem:
1. Someone dares to disassemble his or her Desire HD, making step-by-step photos and making high-quality scans of the individual PCBs/FCBs, earning lots of kudos from the community.
2. We distributively collect money, order a Desire HD, disassemble it, document the process, assemble it back again, sell it, and donate the money for a good cause.
Who is up for either solution 1 or solution 2?

i already tried it
the 7 screws inside are obviously.
i removed them.... and that was the end for me. there must be a weird "slide" trick to remove the back-panel (as far as i can see). i didn`t get it.
This was my first try... i need some days to think about. Probably there will be another one. When i found the trick i make some photos.

Not that I need a tear down, but I would be more than happy to donate to an XDA supported tear down presuming it was ran by a respected member of the community.

Yesterday i talked to http://www.HTCrepairParts.com
They told me they probably will make a repair vid in the near future.
sorry for my weird english - it is not my native language.

malte, The usual HTCRepairParts videos are not high-resolution enough to see the board layouts in order to derive schematics. But maybe you can ask for, besides the videos, they also provide high-resolution scans/still images of the circuit boards. These would be awesome to have.

I have also been looking for a disassembly guide everywhere because after nearly being hit by a car I cracked the digitizer on my DHD. I have order a new with included tools off ebay for $50 and while I have been waiting for it to arrive I have been trying to find one. Even emailed repairsuniverse.com to see when they will be writing up a guide but was told they will do in future.
Hopefully some brave person can help us out.

There is someone that took the Desire Z apart (can't recall link now), but it shows you the innards which will be pretty much identical to the DHD.
Edit: Here is the link.

though also is not the interior itself but how to disassemble it

this is off topic but the HTC repairs website has a 1600mA battery
has anyone tested it yet?

Any news on the guide?

Hi, yes I have 1600mA I can say that it seems the same to me i dunno but seems Chinese crap
Anyway 9.00 am 17pm doing an average use of all functions.

you don't necessarily need to tear it apart to see whether it has an fm transmitter.
we know that it features a bcm4329 chip, which is able to do..
LOW-POWER 802.11N WITH BLUETOOTH® 2.1 + EDR AND FM (TX AND RX)

.. note the fm tx and rx.
always remember, a lot of knowledge can be acquired by analyzing/reversing the software as well. we have access to the radio software, the bootloader, the kernel, etc.. it's just a question of time and effort.
in the fm transmitter case, one would probably have to write a kernel driver according to a datasheet or similar and a frontend. unless this chip is different from the one advertised on the broadcom site..
at least that's the theory.

Hey Guys,
I'm selling my X10i atm and await my Desire HD this weekend (already bought one).
Is there any lighting beside the display and the status led on this phone?
If there is, I'll write a guide, like I did for the X10i (see my signature).
If not... well... We'll see if I find a suitable matter for ripping it apart

I find it funny how companies don't make full use out of the components in their phones. If they were a bit more adventurous they'd allow you officially to enable TX on radio via a pay for software update.
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App

+1...would be really nice

This may be a bad option but say, wouldn't a dummy HD be assembled in the same way as a HD, apart from the innards of course, but once you know how to tear apart a dummy, then you can proceed to tear apart a HD because you know how to take apart the back?

The picture of the digizer from the htcrepairparts side shows a chip on cable of the digizer, can you tell us what does on this chip stands.
I am interessted if the Desire HD uses the Atmel maxTouch or the Synaptics Clearpad 3000 Touch controller.

The trick...
I gave in today and have learnt the "trick" top opening a DHD. You need to remove the 4 small screws (one either side of the SIM cover, two under the battery cover) and then you need to remove the 5th screw hidden under the flash housing.
The flash housing (the plastic round the flash with a soft touch texture) is a clip in unit, with a lip under the case side and a small lip at the bottom. There are three clips, one pretty much middle top, the other two on the lens side, just above and below the LED flash. Like most clips you need to gently ease out with a plectrum or knife blade. I would suggest top first.
The bottom edge of the case can then be popped out and the top slid upwards about 6mm before being removed.
You need to take great care not to damage the volume buttons on removal or the status leds next to the earphone grill. Make sure you lift the case away from these areas when removing.
Interestingly during reassembly I trapped the volume assembly and it brought up a diags menu on boot offering choices such as SIM Lock, FastBoot and Image CRC. I believe this was cause by holding both volume buttons down while powering up (though I needed to go out with my phone working, so didn't explore further, rather just properly set the volume control in the case).
Not the easiest phone to open, but I've seen worse.

Pictures please how to remove the flash housing for fifth screw

The only camera I had when I took it apart was the phone itself, which was obviously no good!
Anyway, I've taken the flash housing off again and have a couple of photos. The second time I found the easiest way to take apart was with a thin knife blade along the lens side of the cover to get things initially free, and then a careful working apart.
The location of the 5th screw is obvious once the flash cover is removed, but in the photo is on the far right.

having trouble replacing touch matrix... need help, pictures included

so my touch matrix cracked, got a replacement on ebay that looks perfect. i got it to work but everytime a do, a few days later it stops working until i fix it again. i can't seem to figure out how the flexible PCB connects to the back of the LCD module. it looks like HTC just puts a piece of tape over it.
however, i noticed when taking off the old LCD touch matrix that there was some sort of possibly conductive adhesive that made it very difficult to pull off. i got it off but one of the contacts got stuck on there and it i had to scrape it off with a scalpel.
see picture below for exact details. if anyone has any experience in doing this and getting it to work, please let me know, it's so frustrating not having touch on this phone.

I think you might need to have that professionally repaired. I used to refurbish phones for Motorola but I've never taken anything this advanced apart before. It sounds like you shouldn't have scraped off that conductive adhesive. The digitizer you bought should have been a relatively simple installation but you should have taken your time peeling off the old cracked digitizer. That adhesive is pretty strong and thats why they use it.
You might want to look into getting your hands on some of that adhesive and just replace it all. Sometimes the oils from your skin from handling such a sensitive ribbon cable could have damaged it as well.
P.S. Unfortunately, most of the people here are software genius's, not hardware experts unfortunately.
it's not too advanced. i figure if they at least offer the part as a replacement option on ebay it can't be too hard. and in the mass view, it's only 4 contacts and relatively easy to replace if you have a minor knowledge of electronics.
i keep taping it down firmly and even putting extra tape on top so that the pressure of the case will press down on the pcb to have a firmer connection.
note: i was very careful to observe ESD precautions, so that isn't it, plus there's no semiconductors that could be damaged in the touch matrix.

Hmm... have you tried good old fashion superglue? I mean not neccesarily putting it on the end of the cable where the conductors are, but on the cable right near the conductors to keep it from moving around and then placing a few strips of tape to sandwich the cable with the housing pressing it down tight?
yes i have but i fear what happens if when pressing it down if it gets on the pads, then i'm just totally screwed. it's a tough situation, i wish there was a contact at HTC that could tell me how it's done.
i'm going to also try contacting their support/repair office and see if they can provide any insight.

The superglue option is very risky but it could save your @$$ if you only put very little on the ribbon and then hold it in place untill it dries and then press down once the glue is already dry.
On another note, contacting their support office would probably be your best bet.
Everything you have done, even though not done wrong, it a far greater risk than I would have ever taken... I would have sent it in to be repaired of the digitizer had a crack in it or or the dot matrix got scratched. But thats me.
Unfortunately there aren't too many technicians here on this forum since it is almost completely firmware and not hardware here... Then again, there might be a few. Where I live it's kinda late at night so maybe they're sleeping or something. Lol.
i'm neither a hardware nor a software expertm but i may be able to help... i saw the manual somewhere... www.mdatweak.com/downloads/Wizard_Service_Manual.pdf... try that... maybe it'll help you...

If i remember correctly there is a photo tutorial on some blog.
no it's not easy, yes you have to disassemble your phone, no i wouldn't bother trying if i have no clue about how the whole thing is set up.
repairing charges are about 170-200€ ~250$.
I haven't done it yet myself, my screen is alsoo cracked, but it seems very tricky. However, you have to disassemble the HD2 befor you can reach the screen. Also, you have to place the LCD part in the oven for 5 to 10 minutes at 50C degrees to let the glue get loose, because the screen is glued on. And even the digitizer is glued onto the lcd. So, even if you manages just to remove the digitizer, you still have to find a way how to glue it back to each other, without making a mess.
I have already disassembled my HD2 with succes. I am going to HK anyway, so I going to buy replacement LCD + Digitizer and bring my HD2 with so I can fix it right there and check if everything works ok aigain.
If so, I xan ditch the iPhone. I hate it.
I've replaced the digitizer from my Samsung Omnia i900 and it turned out to be very easy, following the instructions I found on the internet and YouTube. I guess it's the same for the HD2.
Is the digitzer and glass surface seperable?
Because i can see what looks like a thin layer of glass from the bits of glass which has fallen off on the bottom corner where it took the hit. Or am i just looking at the edge of hte LCD screen?
And since the screen still responds as per norm.

Hi, thanks for these videos,, very detailed!
Have you got any idea about what she means by 'paste'? Is she just saying to connect A > B or is there some kind of adhesive needed? Also, have you got any links to buy some Mylar, OR do you think I could get away with reusing the ones removed?
By the way, I am going to try and replace the digitalizer in my HD2!
Thanks in advance!
There are 2 types of touch screen digitizers for HD2, you have to make sure you buy the right one. One needs to be soldered to the LCD flex, another plugs in. If you have a plug-in setup - you are in luck, if not - best to be left to professional, as it involves fine flex soldering.
Attaching the digitizer itself to the front housing is similar to that of Nexus and similar devices - 3M sticky double-sided tape is perfect, there is a 2mm one in a large flat roll sold everywhere.
Those who suggested the digitizer and LCD are fused together - wrong. Capacitive digitizers do not adhere to LCD and are attached to the housing itself with a free gap between the LCD and the digitizer.
I strongly recommend PROFESSIONAL INSTALLATION.
The best way of doing it is buying a ready assembly. Something along the lines of http://cgi.ebay.com/LCD-Screen-Touc...235?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3f0b9f9463 It might be a bit more expensive than buying just a digitizer and attempting to attach it yourself, but you will save yourself a whole lot of trouble. AND it's still cheaper than $250 quoted somewhere above. Once you purchase the assembly, just familiarise yourself with HD2 disassembly/reassembly procedure and install.
Always buy a digitizer that is "OEM", even if it is used. The first digitizer I got for my HD2 with a smashed screen was shipped as 'new' from China, but when I got it, the quality was bad, because it was so cheap, and the screen would not recognize touch correctly..
Always be careful to check if there is anything caught on the middle frame when you take the motherboard out, because if you don't, you will rip something..
When I took my phone apart, I used this tape: http://cgi.ebay.com/3M-ADHESIVE-STI...652633?pt=PDA_Accessories&hash=item20baa9efd9 and it worked fine

how hard was to put a couple of magnets to the phone? get in and look at my idea...

So I was asking to myself.... how hard could have been? I also thought... is common sense the the phone needed some kind of mechanism to lock the phone when closed and opened, right?
Well, then after thinking I came to a conclusion that well we, users could get creative and do something about it, so I went into a quest looking for the smallest and thinness magnet I could find and I came across magnets that are only 1/32" thick.... now... I thought if I could find a way to cleanly attach them to the phone in places that I already have thought of ( will show tomorrow when I get to my computer ) and would be the least visible.
What do you guys think? Any ideas about attaching the magnets?
Juan I have been looking for magnets, and finding the ideal location....there was a thread a while back regarding tape on the inside between the ribbon and the "z" leg.....I like this idea, but my concern is over GPS use. I'm sure one ca calibrate the bearings, but not sure how it would affect GPS signal....
Please post pics and experiences...really interested in doing this myself, as TMO will no stand by the defective hinge...sorry "design feature"!

Magnets might interfere with the compass
Look into how the magnets might effect your signal a well.

I could swear I saw what looked like magnets on the display g2's at the tmobile stores I went to this week. They all looked like they had a small strip of magnets on each side by the hinge (on the under side of the screen and the body).
Maybe it was just a display model thing, but the phones were active demos.
this is exactly what i was thinking about doing but there seems to be to many problems with compass gps and possibly mememory loss if only there was a way to magetize the ones already in there
I personally think I see an easier way.
I'm going to try to attach a tiny piece of felt to the side of the Z hinge so it wedges a little more securely inside the recessed area on the top of the screen.
Open your keyboard, and you'll see where the hinge arms sit inside the recessed areas with small 1mm or so gaps on either side.
I think it'll work...
we need velcro

I just picked up a package of (2) 5x8 inch magnetic sheets (self adhesive). The cost was under $2.
It is super thin (looking for my digital calipers, but I would guess 1/32 or thinner. Im going to give this a try and post some pics if it works well. If it works, this should be enough magnetic sheet to fix every G2 produced by HTC this year.
Well, I have found no ill effects of the magnetic material and it WORKS... I can now hold the phone upside down, sideways, backwards, etc. Of course if you shake it, it will open. But it will not open or close during natural use.
Took about 2 minutes to do, cost under $2 and I could do another 100 phones with the material I have.

How the F do magnets work, anyway?
im worried about putting magnets near a hard drive or radio.
What about rubber bands of some sort, such that when screen is fully out they lock, but otherwise snap back?

exellent! exellent!!!! just what i had in mind! that was exactly my plan, now, here, the same can be applied here ( i dont see on the pics but did you applied for when the phone is open or closed? or both? if is only when the phone is closed, well look at my picture, is paint quality LOL but i think it can be understood, with the magnets aldeady on the back of the screen, a couple of other magnets can be placed on the red area of the picture, thats a perfect area because there's an indentation there, and a little piece there would not affect the keyboard at all.
pd: info on where you got that material would be awesome, thanks!
pd2: i will do my own too and try different things and test the phone for at least a couple of weeks and see whats happens, also i will let you guys know the end results, i have insurance on my phone so if something happens i can get a new one on the way
pd3: i read for the phone to be affected by magnetic fields, it has to be a really powerful magnet, just look at other phones with magnets in the market... they seem perfectly fine.
I only did this for when the phone is open. Ive never had the phone open from the closed position.
I picked up the package of magnetic sheet at Target. It was in the craft section in a purple plastic envelope. It is made by Horizon Group USA and the SKU number is 765940168059.
going there right now!
Just an FYI, all 3 of my old Sidekicks had magnets so they won't interfere with cell or GPS signal. I am unsure about the compass however. I was considering a similar idea as well only with a couple tiny round silver magnets on the bottom section tops corners and screen section middle sides.
Sorry for this off topic but, why is your phone so shiny? like a polished metalic grey. Looks actually very nice. Polished? full skin?
Most likely took picture using a flash so we could see the magnets

Warm the LCD screen to separate from the touch screen digitizer. Use heat gun or hair dryer to every corner.
You can now heat the front of the screen assembly to warm the adhesive. Use a heat gun or hair dryer on a medium setting for about 45 seconds, using quick movements around the outside edges.
Use a safe open pry tool to pry between the touch screen digitizer and front frame, carefully releasing it from the housing. Reheat if necessary.
Carefully release the touch screen flex cable from the back of the screen assembly and feed it through the housing to fully remove the digitizer.
You can now replace the touch screen digitizer or LCD.
Simply replace the damaged parts with the new ones and reverse the order to put your phone back together again.

hey nice post, one Q though. is it possible to replace the torch? i burnt mine out long ago (ignored the discliamer on the cyanogenmod torch learnt that lesson)

Hey, it's a real nice post.
Replacing the flashlight is possible, it's on a 1,5x0,5 cm pcb-piece, under it there's a bit adhesive, but you can easily seperate it from the mainboard, also it's plugged, not soldered. There's only one problem: to get one...
This is one part i've yet to see a replacement for. I will see if we can source one and let you know.
You could also try and find a cheap non working phone, and take the flashlight from that. That would also solve your issue.
But it is possible? Excellent been wondering that for ages. Thanks guys! Let me know if you find anything

In the original post on the figure 3, where all 3 flex cables are marked with orange circles, what is the purpose of the left flex cable?
I was replacing my lcd when I noticed that it was hanging loose. I reassembled the phone but no problems were detected.
Anyone knows what that flex cable is? Is it redundant?
edit:
found it. Its for those buttons on the screen HOME MENU... I believe it is the lighting for it.
It looks like I need to order another part :>

Nice guide man, I always find a video a little easier to follow when voiding warranties but the more info the better
You can find the HTC Wildfire official dis-assembly video on youtube. It's not my upload just something that I found while researching this
Thanks

You can also find a repair guide video for this device on our site. A link can be found in our signature below.
Thanks for the instructions, it might be really helpful.
I've got 2 Wildfires and both... have taken a nice dive in the sea for accident. One of them has now a damaged phone speaker (the one you use when you're on a call, not the loud speaker). Is there any way to fix it?

We do carry the Wildfire Ear Speaker Replacement As for the water damage.. You should try using a q-tip and 91% alcohol to clean up all of the connections and components.

Hello all, I've inherited a wildfire with a battery bug.. Battery level doesnt go above 40%(above 60% in the replacement battery) no matter how much I charge it.. I read in one of the threads that its a motherboard issue.. So my question is, can somone help me find it? I dont want to go to HTC, because their charges are just too much.. I can change the board myself(have the tools, just need the part).. Any and all help will be much appreciated..
Thank you..

Here is normal rear camera photo
With front camera, it is all blurry and ****
...
I just realized it after a week or so, it was kept indoor 100%
Could be residule dust in the housing being knocked about and ending up on the cam lens from static. Sorry to see that on your week old device man

If it's any consolation, my little Jiayu G4S has exactly the same problem with BOTH cameras. I've come to expect it from these relatively cheap phones. I'm also fairly good at taking my Jiayu apart now - looks like I'll be doing the same with this one too soon
Also, after just a week my back cover is very creaky indeed. I think I've taken it on and off six times to swap SIM cards etc. My Jiayu is a solid as the day I got it almost two years ago.
do you know how long from launch it normally takes for genuine battery covers to hit the market? The wife wants a pink one however I have never owned a xiaomi before so never followed their release times for accessories.
Same dust here :/

That's really frustrating
people say there are holes between the 3.5mm phone jack and the camera, that's where the dust came from.
Yes, my back cover is not tightly fit, the battery is the same. People call me insane, but I could feel the battery rocking left and right when I shake it hard.

Yeah, same for me. Had not noticed it before, but that's not anything major though. I'm more concerned about the dust in camera, although I don't have this problem yet (and I hope I won't).
This made me remember a problem with LG P500 when dust would get under the digitizer.
After a week no problems (Prime 32GB)

There is a dealer called "Xiaomi Home" on Aliexpress who apparently offers these. Whether "Xioami Home" is an official subsidiary of Xiaomi, well, who knows. But anyway, supposedly original Xioami back cases are available at http://www.aliexpress.com/store/product/100-Original-XIAOMI-Redmi-Note-2-Case-Protective-Cover-Case-For-Redmi-Note-2-phone-case/811568_32446023315.html. Not all colors are available at this time. They also have a supposedly original Xiaomi protective flip cases listed at http://www.aliexpress.com/store/product/New-arrivel-Original-XIAOMI-Redmi-Note-2-Case-Flip-Protective-Cover-Case-For-Redmi-Note-2/811568_32446027248.html.
I noticed I have similar dust like things under front camera hole I think they were not there when I just received phone. Seems like dust came from somewhere, any ideas what we could do with this sh.t?
If it's coming through the headphone jack like some people suggested, you could try getting a can of compressed air and spraying into the head phone jack, should unseat the dust without damaging any components.
Possible fix..
My RM Note 2 had this problem too!! After 4 days! If you blow in the headphone port the ff camera steams up.. So that's definitely the problem. I fixed it quite simply.. Took the phone apart.. (easy for anyone with basic phone tools and a little experience..) Just took the shielding off, no need to remove motherboard.. Then lifted FF camera module out and used a very lint free cloth to get rid of any dust etc..
I then used a tiny tiny bit of blutac to form a gasket around the camera module, making sure that no Blutac is visible through the front of the phone.. Pressed the module in to place gently, and did the blow test to check it was successful.. And yes! 2 days later and no dust at all.. It's just a slight design oversight.. The camera housing isn't well sealed enough.
Hope this might be helpful to some.. It's probably not very well explained.. Sorry. Annoying to have to do this on a brand new device.. But my HTC one M8 had a similar problem.. Can't be fixed.. And it cost £550.. So an easy fix on an otherwise flawless and awesome £100 device is very forgivable.
This probably ends your warranty and could well break something especially if you don't really know what you're doing. I'm not responsible for thermonuclear war or anything do with your phone. Proceed with caution at your own risk.
Regards, happy Chinese bargain buying!

I think if you took some pic when taking the phone apart would be great. I want to do this , too. But I have only replace the touchpanel before. and I don't know where to pry...
Still no problems.

i hope that xiaomi will fix this problem in a future release...who knows..
If you see dust on the front camera, try put your mouth over the 3.5 jack and start to aspire with force. The dust will magically disappear
However dust doesn't affect photo quality
