how hard was to put a couple of magnets to the phone? get in and look at my idea... - G2 and Desire Z General

So I was asking to myself.... how hard could have been? I also thought... is common sense the the phone needed some kind of mechanism to lock the phone when closed and opened, right?
Well, then after thinking I came to a conclusion that well we, users could get creative and do something about it, so I went into a quest looking for the smallest and thinness magnet I could find and I came across magnets that are only 1/32" thick.... now... I thought if I could find a way to cleanly attach them to the phone in places that I already have thought of ( will show tomorrow when I get to my computer ) and would be the least visible.
What do you guys think? Any ideas about attaching the magnets?

Juan I have been looking for magnets, and finding the ideal location....there was a thread a while back regarding tape on the inside between the ribbon and the "z" leg.....I like this idea, but my concern is over GPS use. I'm sure one ca calibrate the bearings, but not sure how it would affect GPS signal....
Please post pics and experiences...really interested in doing this myself, as TMO will no stand by the defective hinge...sorry "design feature"!

I posted a pretty detailed post in the accessories forum. You might want to look at the "hinge fix" thread over there.

Magnets might interfere with the compass

Look into how the magnets might effect your signal a well.
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using Tapatalk

That's why I'm going to buy the magnets and do tests and see how much will interfere with the phone. So if anyone of you guys is interested, I will keep y'all posted.

I could swear I saw what looked like magnets on the display g2's at the tmobile stores I went to this week. They all looked like they had a small strip of magnets on each side by the hinge (on the under side of the screen and the body).
Maybe it was just a display model thing, but the phones were active demos.

this is exactly what i was thinking about doing but there seems to be to many problems with compass gps and possibly mememory loss if only there was a way to magetize the ones already in there

I personally think I see an easier way.
I'm going to try to attach a tiny piece of felt to the side of the Z hinge so it wedges a little more securely inside the recessed area on the top of the screen.
Open your keyboard, and you'll see where the hinge arms sit inside the recessed areas with small 1mm or so gaps on either side.
I think it'll work...

we need velcro

I just picked up a package of (2) 5x8 inch magnetic sheets (self adhesive). The cost was under $2.
It is super thin (looking for my digital calipers, but I would guess 1/32 or thinner. Im going to give this a try and post some pics if it works well. If it works, this should be enough magnetic sheet to fix every G2 produced by HTC this year.
Well, I have found no ill effects of the magnetic material and it WORKS... I can now hold the phone upside down, sideways, backwards, etc. Of course if you shake it, it will open. But it will not open or close during natural use.
Took about 2 minutes to do, cost under $2 and I could do another 100 phones with the material I have.
Here are the pics:

How the F do magnets work, anyway?

im worried about putting magnets near a hard drive or radio.
What about rubber bands of some sort, such that when screen is fully out they lock, but otherwise snap back?

exellent! exellent!!!! just what i had in mind! that was exactly my plan, now, here, the same can be applied here ( i dont see on the pics but did you applied for when the phone is open or closed? or both? if is only when the phone is closed, well look at my picture, is paint quality LOL but i think it can be understood, with the magnets aldeady on the back of the screen, a couple of other magnets can be placed on the red area of the picture, thats a perfect area because there's an indentation there, and a little piece there would not affect the keyboard at all.
pd: info on where you got that material would be awesome, thanks!
pd2: i will do my own too and try different things and test the phone for at least a couple of weeks and see whats happens, also i will let you guys know the end results, i have insurance on my phone so if something happens i can get a new one on the way
pd3: i read for the phone to be affected by magnetic fields, it has to be a really powerful magnet, just look at other phones with magnets in the market... they seem perfectly fine.

I only did this for when the phone is open. Ive never had the phone open from the closed position.
I picked up the package of magnetic sheet at Target. It was in the craft section in a purple plastic envelope. It is made by Horizon Group USA and the SKU number is 765940168059.

going there right now!

Just an FYI, all 3 of my old Sidekicks had magnets so they won't interfere with cell or GPS signal. I am unsure about the compass however. I was considering a similar idea as well only with a couple tiny round silver magnets on the bottom section tops corners and screen section middle sides.

Sorry for this off topic but, why is your phone so shiny? like a polished metalic grey. Looks actually very nice. Polished? full skin?

Most likely took picture using a flash so we could see the magnets

Warning: Don't buy this case for fuze

I purchased this case from daydeal.com
http://www.daydeal.com/product.php?productid=28226&cat=3920
And it puts pressure on both the outer edge of the touch screen and the touch pad at the base of the machine. The fit is great, but this button/screen pressure renders the screen and buttons useless.
If anyone has any advice other than throwing this in the garbage, please let me know. I've considered a dremmel tool session, but I'm not sure it's worth it on such an inexpensive part.
Buyer beware!

sand it down using a nail filer.
I agree. It seems that several cases like this have the same problem. I used a small knife, but you can use just about anything to scrape down the inner mold remnants and then it works fine.
Well, sure... thanks. Like I said, I might break out the dremmel tool and do a nice finishing job on this.
The main point is that we shouldn't HAVE to alter products to make them have their basic function. To me, this is like buying car tires that are square, and all you have to do is shave off the corners until they're round so they can roll. $13, or however much it is going for these days, is really quite expensive for two pieces of plastic. It's even more expensive when they don't work out of the box.
So, buyer beware.
Would it have been so tough to include the case name into the thread title? Generically mystery threads ain't cool...
I got a similar case... but all I did was spend 2 hours of filing lol... sucked but works great so far.. hopefully the coating doesn't peel off anytime soon.. not bad for a 9 dollar case on ebay
mine it's transparent any suggestions?

Thanks!!! I got my case the same night I loaded a new ROM. My case only caused intermittant problems, so I thought it was the ROM. I was getting ready to flash to the previous ROM when I read this thread. I removed the case and have not had the problem since. My case was clear also. My solution was to throw the case away and order a different style case.
Is this just as bad..
I was looking at possibly getting this case for my Fuze, then I seen this thread. This case looks pretty much the same, but not sure as how
it will fit, and I rather not purchase something that will cause problems.
It's from a different website, but could potentially have the same issue.
Anyone think it's worth it? Or just forget that style of case altogether?
Also wondering, if these types of cases hender in when your trying to acess the 'softkeys' on the screen [the lil calender & contacts spot]. I like being able to slide my thumb from there to the buttons, but i was wonder if the lil spot between could become a problem. Thanks.

i love the black rubberized case. i got it off of ebay and just sanded down the inside with some rough sandpaper. i painted the inside black because the edges show and now it looks great.
I bought something similar, but it was the black silicon case, so it is flexible. It's a bit annoying at times, as it is flimsy, but it does what I need it to do. I picked this thing up for around $6 shipped on ebay.
If you read my thread at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=459761 you will see what I did. All I did was sand down the inside upper left of the case and it has worked perfectly ever since. I posted pictures in the thread also. Hope that helps.
The case is really great, after you take the pressure off the inside upper left corner.
For what it's worth...I have this case in pink and I haven't had a single problem. I put it on the second day I had my device and it's been on ever since (only removed a couple of times to get to sd and sim).
I didn't need to file anything down. Maybe the difference is in the manufacturing of the color lot.
For those who don't mind spending a little more to protect their investment...(To me it's a BIG investment) http://www.noreveusa.com/product/HTC_P4600_-_HTC_Touch_Pro_Tradition_leather_case.html All buttons and interfaces accessible. Great protection!!

Couldnt agree more,I bought a new fuze from att and when it got here the spring or the slide one was way loose,it clicked when you are talking on it, called to get a replacement exchange the day after, I was told I would have to BUY another phone and when they recieved mine they would credit me.I am still p.o.ed,I told they lady that I already paid for a new phone and apparently didnt get one and this wasnt right.
at&t version of the case
I haven't noticed any problems with the "same style" case offered by at&t, but, I popped the top cover off of mine. I have a "invisible shield" screen protector on my Fuze, and noticed a slight indentation on the top left corner, and I also noticed a slight indentation above the left & right areas above the "HTC" logo at the bottom of the screen. Like I said, I haven't noticed the problems pointed out here, but I thought that if I'm seeing an indentation on the invisible shield,
then there has to be some pressure being applied to the screen. I went ahead and shaved the areas noted with the red in the photo below. Hope this helps.
I got a similar case off ebay too:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=220306410400&ssPageName=ADME:X:RTQ:US:1123
works great. no need for filing whatsoever.

[Q] Tighten Slider Mechanism??

I dropped my Epic yesterday (luckily not a scratch) but now I feel the slider a bit loose from the left side. You can lift it 1-2mm from the left side if held in portrait mode, but right side still sturdy. Its a but annoying to type since it wobbles a bit and makes some clicking sound when open. Just wanted to ask if anyone has or seen a teardown of the Epic to see if there is a way to tighten the slider a bit??
**cmon ex Pre users... u know how it feels**
Thanx
Mine does it a tad bit as well. Never dropped, but I think the case may be causing it to losen up a bit.
Mine does the same thing. Only had it 4th days and it's got some serious wobble. Definitely wish it felt more sturdy, ala moto droid
what your feeling seems to be what most epic users are having. I wish they made the slide as sturdy as the TP2 slide was. Man that thing was strong! My old epic had the same kind of movement right out of the box, I recently got another one and it is not too bad but I am sure over time it will loosen up again.
The build quality is really on the "meh" side. My first Epic had screen wobble after a week and the screen glass raising up above the bezel on the left side. My replacement (brand new) had screen wobble out of the box and again the glass on the left side of the screen is raising up slightly above the bezel. You can slide it open, press on the glass on the left side and literally see it move back down into the bezel. The stores display model had a tight screen and the glass was set into the bezel on both sides. Not in the mood to go on a replacement spree. I pay insurance so I am waiting to see if it gets any worse over time.
Sent from my wrist watch calculator
Styckx,
from a employee's perspective, you'd have a MUCH better experience if you swap them out immediately until you get a perfect handset. The longer the wait between replacements, the more likely it is for the following:
The rep forgets you. Sounds silly, but dealing with one rep/store makes it more likely they go the extra mile for you. For example, replacing the epic with a new one, instead of a refurb.
They decide it's not a replaceable issue and tell you to go through insurance and pay the $100 deductible if you feel the need to replace it.
It gets worse and worse until you finally decide to head to the store, and they tell you it's now considered physical damage and refer you to Asurion.
I can't tell you how many loose charging ports or slides we saved from being *broken* phones by catching it early. Big difference.
no luck finding a useful teardown to see if there is an easy way to access the slider and see if you can just grip it a little so its tighter...
can the tach at sprint take a look at it?? Im past my 30 days and im not looking for a replacement... just enough for it to stop making sounds when i type while walking...
The screen rides on rails. If you have ever taken apart a semi auto handgun then you would know what i am talking about. Only way to tighten them up would be to squeeze the female end of the rails which is on the keyboard part of the phone.

did you figure out how to tighten it? I have the same problem. My became loose because I was trying to pry out a case I put on. It's not exactly loose, but it bugs me that there's a 1mm gap between the screen and keyboard.
Sultan, can you take pictures of the back of the phone as well?
If you could demo a "teardown" on that (what else do you have to lose?) and figure out how to safely tighten the railing, that'd be great.
I don't know if it would be possible so if there's any brave or rich soul out there willing to attempt, many of us will be grateful.
I've had my phone for about 8 days now and I noticed the wobble as soon as I took it out of the box. If I have my palm on the bottom right corner and then try to click something in the upper left corner, the screen rocks back and forth. Annoying.
I got it at best buy. not sure if I want to go through the hassle of unrooting and getting a new phone just for a minor wobble. Can you just take it back and say you want a new one? I've never done it before...
I had to send that one back to assurion. Sorry guys.
But from what i saw if you could somehow tighten the rails then it will work.

I took my epic back to best buys cause of screen wobble. They didnt have a problem at all. I just told them to compare it with other epics they had in stock.

There were no instructions to read. You simply said to buy a case, no links or anything.
My guess is that he has a case that does not have a cutout for the hardware keyboard on the sides (hard to tell from the video, but it didn't look like it). Normally this is thought of as a poor design choice since that means it interferes with the keyboard while open (if you flick the phone open, it may not lay flat). If the case is sufficiently thin though, you can probably wedge the case edge against the edge of the keyboard, effectively holding it in place. Just my guess though.
I bet you're totally right, a case without a cutout and case wall is thin enough to wedge in the space behind the back of screen. That is why he repeated, "push up, push up".

it is a solution. You just need the 3 dollar case and push up and it wont become loose when you text on the bed.
Here is the link to the case the OP has (taken from his YouTube video):
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0045EI356/
Be warned, your mileage may vary with purchasing this case. There is a really long thread in the Accessories forum about this exact one from Amazon. It seems like some of the people who bought it received cases with the cutout and others received cases that didn't have it. Most likely depends on which vendor you buy from and what they have stocked (you'll notice there are currently 18 different vendors). Notice, even in the pictures on Amazon, the cutout is there...
I actually bought this case a long time ago when that thread started. Mine has the cutouts. Great case for cheap (and I actually wanted one with the cutouts so I got lucky).
He's got a link on his you tube page to buy the case, but look at this picture taken from his video it looks like his middle finger is on the other side holding the screen up, and keeping it from opening,Is this a scam to sell more cases???? You be the judge.

I only said buy the case because this particular case makes the screen stay up. I think is because of the clamps they get stuck. Ill make another video
I also have to wonder -- if you're pushing hard enough to wedge the case behind the raised part of the keyboard, are you also putting too much stress on the hinge mechanism?

Riot Outfitters Leather Case Review (*With PICS*)

I will update this thread tonight with pictures and an in depth review. I was in a Canadian Best Buy close to work and saw this case below the tablet area. I had read mixed things about Acer rubbery case and got cold feet with my expensive PD Air order after reading some mixed reviews on their service.
The company is Riot Outfitters and the protective case is leather. I have opened it and so far it looks fantastic. Magnets for closing it and it can be configured into 2 stand up modes using a flap that collapses with a magnet at the back. The ports are all exposed with the one exception being the docking port. I will take pictures tonight and offer some more thoughts.
UPDATE: Sorry pictures and full review delayed as I had a family function to attend..tonight for sure...
As promised here are some pics and an additional comment based on a few days of use. My only other complaint (other than dock port being covered) is that the unit slips a bit when it is tilted in landscape mode (non volume side) as the magnetic slip over latch doesn't hold the unit completely in.
Here are some pics and ask away if you have any questions. The only other thing I forgot to mention was the price. The unit was $49.99 at the Canadian Best Buy.

Looks like a promising alternative to the PDAir cases. However, it does seem very loose. Does it seem pretty secure to you?

The slight slippage I was referring to only allows it to slip so far as the unit itself fits in snug at the center width. Undoing that clasp and purposely holding it up the unit does not slide out. However, with that said it is a bit loose in that one orientation and being leather it may get a bit looser but all in all I would rather have it a bit easier to get in and out versus what I have read about the Acer one which seems to hold it too tight. Also for $10 more you get something that is leather and doesn't smell like gasoline
I also don't think it would require much effort to rig it to make it fit completely snug and have some low cost ideas already but at this point I don't require it.
I also picked up this case and I've only found one issue with it. When using the tablet in landscape mode with the side that opens facing down, I've noticed that the tablet sides down somewhat and the case edge covers the ambient light sensor causing the screen to dim. I've even noticed this in portrait mode on occasion.
They should have put a notch in the side for the light sensor like they did for the front camera. Five minutes with a sharp exacto knife fixes the problem
Cant find this case
on Riots website?!
UPDATE: Added pics of Packaging including SKU/Part number above for those interested.
there is a GIANT problem with this case and with most other cases out there..
(I have one..)
It was designed to fit the device... upside down... chances are a person will 90% of the time use it in the "not to high" angle to kind of lay them with a good viewing angle so they can type while on their lap or on a desk..etc.
The problem is the whole device sits upside down when you put the device into this sleeve.
This wouldn't be an issue if the rotation worked as its supposed to but its currently extremely buggy in HC, games will always display in the original ladnscape mode so using this case, they'll appear upside down.
Also... there is that horrible bug in honeycomb where all other rotations perform like garbage... so that really annoyed me.
I solved this by cutting the proper holes for the device to fit in rotated by 180 degrees.

I even sent them an email sing if they planned on releasing this in Best Buy in the US. No reply as of yet..
Got a reply from them today and its as follows:
Tom,
We do have that case available for sale.
The cost is $19.99, the only problem is we can not process a credit card at this time for this item because it is not on our site.
I can process an order 2 ways, one you can order something for equal price from our website and when the order comes through I will see your name and send the Acer Tablet. Or the other way is to send us a check.
Let me know if you are interested in either of the above options and I will make sure that you get your order.
If you would like to call me to discuss details let me know and I will give you my direct line phone number.
Thank you
Tanya

Sounds like an awful lot of crap to deal with just to purchase an accessory for my tablet. Especially one that will require modification to hold the tablet right side up and fit snugly...

True, but for $20 you are getting something that doesn't smell like gasoline
I just keep brightness on manual so the lack of the brightness sensor being obscured for me personally has been a non factor...so I have done no cutting and the only thing I did was add a clasp which cost me $2 so the unit is completely snug. I can post some pictures but agreed it is post purchase. I am confident the PD Air is a better case...much better but also much more expensive.
i wasnt offered a purchase deal from Riot/Tanya in the email she replied to me. she just said they were looking at getting it sold in US Retail stores but nothing right now.

Hell, it'd be nice to just be able to order one from their website, can't even do that. That may be why she offered me a shot at it. My problem is the part about ordering something else, paying for it and then hoping the monkeys in the packaging/shipping department sent the right item. Don't know that I really wish to deal with the headache if they screw it up.

[Q] Shake your Xperia Play

Hey Folks
As a nooby I must admit I'm quite intimidated by the video I was subjected to at registration but I've worked up the courage to start up a new thread
My Xperia play has an audible rattle when it is shook even lightly.I'm trying to firgure out what this is as it does not happen to my brothers.Another thing is that there is no rattle when the phone is open in controller mode but only when it is closed.
I'm wondering if this is normal with x amount of phones or whether or not its dodgy. It must be something to do with the hinges as far as I can see because it does not make a sound when it is open.Any response would be greatly appreciated
I've seen a thread similar to this on these forums as I've been lurking for a while.I'm just wondering how common if at all common is this?
If I shake mine up&down fast enough, it makes a small rattle. Doesn't seem harmful, and my phone's been working perfectly for months.
Gave mine a little shake up and down and it rattles a little. My phone is fine. Never noticed because I never shaked it before.

Yep, mine rattles when the gamepad is closed, but doesn't when it's open. It sounded like it could be the buttons but I shook it while holding different variations (of buttons) but it still rattles. It must be something inside that becomes taut when you open the gamepad.
Out of interest, why were you shaking your phone?

Also, I don't have to shake it much, and it rattles when shook in any direction, more so when up and down though.

Has anybody else noticed that, whilst typing, the two halves of the phone sometimes hit against each other?
Hey guys thanks for the replies.
I always get all ocd with my new gadgets .I wasn't sure if this was a widespread minor annoyance or a defected handset.I got a flashlight widget which requires a shake to switch on and off so that's how I discovered it.
To milkyJoe.that problem drove me absolutely insane so I had to come up with a solution.i'll post it tomorrow when i've more time pal

Yeah mine does that, annoys the hell out of me. I thought about going into Verizon and seeing if they can do anything. My screen half has become more loose than I think is acceptable.

there was a thread about this a while back and i think that they found out the reason it does this is because of a cable or a loose piece of plastic in all xperia plays. it's perfectly normal and nothing is wrong.

Same here!
Whats more important is the fact that the slide mechanism scratches the deck pad near the select button after repeated open and close
It's a manufacturing defect and I've seen it twice on 2 different models of Xperia
So I know it's not a coincidence.
My newest one has a rubber protector over it I made to stop the scratching and the "jiggle" the OP is talking about

hell it could be the loose end of the hdmi port sony decided to cut off
I thought that would be the gyroscopic sensor, isn't it like a little ball or something?

Patient: My arm hurts when I hold it over my head like this.
Doctor: Don't do that...
Do you not feel that having a rattling phone makes it feel cheap

Man that is genius! I should look into that, although I haven't really gotten any scratches from the slider yet and I've had it since June.
I took it apart thoroughly and there are several loose parts inside, but I'm pretty sure it's the power/lock button. The flat cable that slides is not going to make a sound like that and the headphone jack and front-camera didn't seem nearly as problematic.

On my third one and I just put clear tape over it. My first one didn't show wear nearly as fast. I disassembled the second and saw that the Teflon (or whatever it is) dome nub/button was kinda creased and had collected contamination, though the damage was already visible while the phone was otherwise pristine and new (hardly even a speck of pocket lint!). It wipes right off and, honestly, I think it was the metallic paint that it was scrubbing off and not externally acquired dirt or dust. My second one also quickly developed a scratch on the underside of the top piece from a screw on the bottom that was screwed in too far and protruding. This was before I took it apart, so I am not to blame!
