According to a tweet released by SamFirmware a few days ago, it seems that Samsung Galaxy Tab will receive the Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) update at the end of Q1 (1st quarter) 2011. We are not sure if this is true or not but according to them this news is “based on FW and insider news”.
We all know that Android 2.3 is already getting tested on different devices such as the new PlayStation Phone and Google accidentally released a video showing how the new android OS works. And if we take into account the fact that carriers still have to update their mobile devices to Android 2.2, it makes sense to wait a bit until everyone is on the same OS.
I am sure that Android 2.3 will arrive soon also based also on the fact that Google’s CEO and Chairman of the Board, Eric Schmidt, confirmed at the Web 2.0 Summit that Gingerbread will be launched “in the next few weeks”.
We attached bellow a few videos from Google and from the leaked PSPhone which gives you an insight on how the new update performs/looks like. Do you think there will a lot of improvements compared to 2.2? Will this update be fully optimised to work on the Samsung Galaxy Tab? We will have to wait and see

thank you for the information this is good news

Hope the browser on the tab will default to desktop mode

The reason ot doesnt is because so many websites are Android friendly/have Android only features. You can get other browsers that perform as well/better that have desktop mode.

Given that 2.3 still isn't out for any platform yet in a final state, and the usual length of time it takes for OEMs to release a customised firmware for any platform (how many phones have 2.2 that were "promised" it?), I'll be amazed if it turns up by the end of March.
Here's hoping though.

2.3 is a lot more modular than older revisions were. In theory it should take less time and effort to roll out than 2.2 did.

An option so it at least remembers that youve set it to desktop version would be appreciated, then those that want to keep the mobile versions are unaffected whilst those who want a full web experience dont have to change their useragent everytime they load their browser.

Well, the Gingerbread-equipped Google Nexus S phone is basically a slightly improved Samsung S, so hopefully APKs and other hacked ROM bits will soon start becoming available for the Tab too
Firmware dumps are already available (on this very forum), but of course they are not usable as-is. Still, it won't take long to see some results. The Gingerbread source code will be available later this month via AOSP, in the meantime the SDK can be studied via the emulator.

i would also be interested to know whether the galaxy tab will receive the honeycomb update to.that updatewill support tablet devices, but samsung are awful at updating their devices, they want pepe to upgrade to new hardware,I suspect that they are going to release galaxy tab 2!

good stuff, cant wait!

The biggest question is: will the VOIP module be crippled?

I wouldnt keep my hopes up until end of june that is. I really doubt we will get 2.3 before summer, seeing all those years how slow updates are by all companies. Just my 2 cents.

Sadly, most this info is no good to US stuff. It's all when the carrier releases it.

Yea, that may be the case so we dont know the for sure date, but with this news we know we should be getting it anyway.

I hope that will fix the problem with Exchange email not being able to display HTML emails. I spent several hours on the phone with Samsung this week and they determined they couldn't fix the problem but they "hoped" an upgrade to 2.3 would.
This issue has something to do with SSL security. HTML emails do come in for things like Gmail and Hotmail but with some exchanges, the emails come in as plain text.
Paul.

So there's now a half working port for the SGS.
Wonder if the tab will get the same love? I'm considering switching to an iPad + SGS to get the best of both worlds, simply because i'm underwhelmed by the dev support of the Tab.

Seems a strange thing to say! Is there any "dev support" for the iPad? Or are you really talking about "tablet specific" applications?

We're here live at Google I/O, and the folks from Mountain View have just shared something rather sweet -- a coalition of manufacturers and carriers committed to making sure their Android devices receive the very latest updates. All four major US carriers (and Vodafone) as well as HTC, Samsung, Sony Ericsson, LG and Motorola are on board, and all will guarantee you timely upgrades to the latest version of Android for eighteen months after release, provided the hardware's capable. Now that's change we can believe in.

I believe it's too little too late for our beloved X10's
could be a little too late but seeing how quickly manufacturers tend to do upgrades and considering the fact that the 1 and a half year old X10 IS getting Gingerbread... doesn't seem that bad, could be worse (aka Motodesk...) and, either the costumers feedback or the really awesome work devs do over here, it's nice seeing Sony Ericsson coming to an agreement of having the latest Android version on the devices
Haha. That is awesome. 18 months. Right about the time your 2 year contract is up in most places where there is carrier subsidy. Gives you about 6 months to think about what your next phone will be...otherwise you'll be stuck on an "old" OS version after that.
Still, it is pretty cool that they have an update policy in place now. All things considered, 18 months is actually decent; there could be lots of hardware improvements in addition to the OS improvements in that time, unless phone technology plateaus like computers did a while back before picking up again. But it would be hilarious if the phone companies released an update the day after the 18 months are up...
i belive these will go hand in hand with the new arc play neo and newer xperia minis!
x10 wont recieve any futher updates above 2.3.3
its to late to our x10 , we must trust in our xda dev
Note that this is a policy for this year's phones and beyond, and does not apply to our X10s. Though the fact that we are getting the GB update is awesome.

18 months is hardly decent in the mobile business... especially in regards to Android.
18 months ago brings us back to the launch of Android Eclair. With this policy, SE would have been totally fine letting us run Android 1.6 until April 26 2011.

What??
Did you read it? It is saying 18 months of getting updates as they roll out from google, meaning we would already be on gingerbread.....
18 months of guaranteed timely updates is awesome, and unparalleled so far in the world of mobile smartphones
Maybe I am confused, but I believe Gingerbread was released in December 2010. 18 months from that takes us to June 2012.
If I'm wrong please let me know.
What a huge joke. 18 months IF the hardware is capable? So what? 1 update and for some stupid reason the hardware cannot handle the next update.
Nothing will change except for later updates because now they have to provide an update within 18 months not even close to the stock release date like some manufacturers do already.

You are not understanding what this means....
It isn't saying 18 months between updates, it is saying up until 18 months after the phone is put out you will get every update as it is released, so no waiting around for companies to release their own "custom" versions and getting left behind. Meaning we would have gotten gingerbread immediately.
Just read it over a couple times and saw where I mis-read what it said. I was assuming 18 months after release of the OS not 18 months of the release for the device.
Cheers

well they can't release tablet software on a smartphone that isn't the same resolution, etc.....
I think that is more so what they mean.
Also, some phones released have been released with very outdated specs (i.e.- all of SE's new lineup) so if they release a dual core specific version of android, that would be sony's fault, not googles.
This sounds like a positive move to me.
To bad they couldn't implement this sooner... they could have avoided att eol-ing this device with not one update.

No, the last would be Gingerbread.
Since the X10 would not follow this policy (think this policy only applies to new phones).

European availability

I asked my local Samsung distributor on Facebook about availability and got a strange answer yesterday. They said it has been delayed because of Android software problems and should be here by end of July.
This sounds just like the rumour that i read about a week ago. I don't know what to think now. Does anyone have any information about this?
Only what you know - I have heard August as they ready 3.1 to ship with the device.
I picked up up a limited edition 10.1 on ebay for a reasonable price, and just got the upgrade to 3.1 so all's well on them here in the UK.
Perhaps see if you can get one from there if you can't wait...
I want a 3G tablet, so the LE is not a option, i already have a WIFI only Xoom for home use. Only thing that's holding me back from buying a Xoom 3G is the fact that the European Xoom's are not Google experience devices and don't get updates from Google.
So my only option for now is 10.1V, but I wonder if the 10.1V will get updates at all?
I don't understand how there can be a software problem. My Xoom runs on 3.1 for over a month now, also the GT10.1LE got the update and the GT10.1 was already released with 3.1 in US. And if i remember correctly then this rumor about software problems with Android 3.1 got already a response from Google and they said there is no such problems. So i just don't get it, how can Samsung make so much confusion...

Found this link on Samsung Poland Facebook page Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 in Poland at the end of June (Google translate)
In Poland there is now Samsung Mobile L!VE (http://www.samsungmobilelive.pl/o-sml.html).
I have already visited one stand and today I plan to see one more.
1. I have been told to expect it in the shops by the end of current month.
2. All specs on the stands list GT 10.1 with dual core 1,2 Ghz CPU (will try to take some photos 2day).
With recent pull back from 1,2 Ghz by Vodafone to 1,0 Ghz I really do not know what to think... especially that these stands are made by Samsung not some 3rd party company like Vodafone or independent distributor.

If you can, please ask if they have heard about the delay's because of Android software problems.
Vodafone changing the specs doesn't mean anything, it can be that they just released the information too early. This happened with Android 3.1 also, Adobe wrote in Android Market Flash update description that Android 3.1 is needed and this information was removed very fast and everything was denied until Google officially announced 3.1.
I found now one dealer in Germany that lists a release date. It is Conrad and they say on their webpage 4th of July 2011 for the 3G model. Let's see if that's true.

I forgot the link: http://www.conrad.de/ce/ProductDeta...productcode=877127&zanpid=1514577257979813888

And the black and white 8.9 - Juli 15
http://www.conrad.de/ce/de/product/...lack-mit-Multi-Touch-Display/0403040&ref=list
I don't have experience with Conrad. Are their expected delivery dates usually correct?

im not too sure how good my polish is but does that say that it has a 3.2mp camera and supports full hd? im quiet sure the 10.1 only supports 720p. so may be those specs are not 100%. thats to galtom for the pics thou. ne more info?
So, first release for Europe will be the 3G model?
Any news when the wifi only will be available?
That is exactly what it says.
Guys at the stand do not know anything about it as they do not really work for Samsung.
Basically there is a GREAT, BIG MESS around and with this tablet crated by Samsung . It is so big that now looks like even Samsung itself is not 100% sure what is coming out of his production lines.
If you ask Samsung through facebook or its websites in different countries you will get a lot of different answers but what seems to certain is:
all GT10.1 will run 1ghz tegra 2 soc
wifi will not have microsd
3g will have it
it should reach shops with android 3.1
touchwiz ux looks very good and works very good - for me it is actually more convinient and user friendly that google UI.

To be completly honest I have not asked as it is not the one I would buy :-(.
I shuold be later on 2day at another stand to compare unit model but do not know how reliable are infos given there.
As you see CPU shows 1,2 Ghz.... so I'd rather wait for something more official.
I just can not believe Samsung goes on (sill) making more mess, creating confusion and disinformation in regard of its tablet.
This is the first time I have seen official Samsung marketing showing 1.2Ghz... interesting
Have missed other stand 2day - sorry. And since it is a big holiday 2morrow in PL (not usual Sunday) I will not be able to get there 2morrow (it is not me but everything is essentially closed up) :-(.
Get back to you on this on Monday.

Yeah I am also afraid that it`s just another empty statement. I mean Samsung wanted to release Bada in September, then it was October and now November...
I got today a Samsung Wave 2 device, it has bad 1.2 (which is quite disappointing)
so, is that mean that I would be able to update my OS to bada 2.0 in a few weeks?

Maybe yes maybe not, all depends if Samsung can finish the development until this or next month. You could already update to the latest Bada 2.0 Beta for the S8530 via Flash but there is only a stable Beta for S8500 so far (been using it since it came out, not one crash til this day). I would recommend you wait til final version.
and another question,
Are all apps that work on bada 1.2 would work on bada 2.0 too?

No. Not all apps that work in bada 1.2 work in bada 2.0 beta.
Hopefully all may work in the final and official release of bada 2.0.

Check this out. It only accounts for turkey but it wouldn`t surprise me if Samsung would release Bada 2.0 in 2012 and not in december 2011 as promised. Even if Samsung Italia said a week ago or so that Bada 2.0 will be released in december 2011. For me this all just takes too long. I just hope that the devs will have success with Android port and if not I`m buying an Galaxy S II

Yes profit is of course important but I think it`s even more important for a company to keep the customers satisfied and that`s what Samsung doesn`t do with Bada in my opinion. Bada is a good OS but to keep the customers waiting for a new version for a whole year and then delay it again is just wrong in my opinion (especially when the new version is already finished) and because of this a lot of people feel betrayed and now a lot of people will just switch to Android because of this. But that`s just my opinion on this topic.
We have to wait more...
I'm expecting a new announcement from Samsung....

Hints at ICS being released in April :(

I was just looking at Engadget, and I saw this: http://www.engadget.com/2011/12/17/bell-mobility-hints-at-ice-cream-sandwich-release-dates-for-gala/
Here is what the article it says:
"We've come across an internal document from Bell Mobility that's bound to raise the hopes of a few good Canadians. Yes folks, we're talking Ice Cream Sandwich. The carrier to the north estimates that it'll have Android 4.0 ready for the Sensation in February, which is to be followed by the Raider's update in March -- this handset may be more familiar to AT&T customers as the Vivid. Pulling up the rear, users of the Galaxy S II are to expect the upgrade in April, and while the Optimus LTE is also mentioned, there's no specific time frame for that one. Certainly estimated release dates don't always come to fruition, but at least we know what Bell's aiming for, anyway."

I think that is the date the Galaxy SII will get ICS on that carrier. Remember that a lot of carriers delay updates to their phones so they can be "certified". Also, if we already have a pretty much working build of ICS (give or take a few force closes and battery life), how can it take them so long to polish it?
At this stage i have to say im a bit pissed off that we still haven't been given ICS for our SGSII why cant they just release all the necessary code required so developers can do their thing.
Bell is very, very slow at releasing official firmware updates. As far as I know the SGSII still comes with their carrier branded 2.3.3
If they're releasing in April and that happens to be at the same time as ICS goes global, I'd be very, very, VERY surprised. Just a possibility.
I will be issed also if it isn't released by February by the latest, if it isn't i think ill be getting a nexus phone next year.

I think I am going to get the next nexus phone regardless of when we get ICS for the GS2.
to be honest i hope they dont rush it , it isnt just building ics for their hardware it needs intensive testing as well
the sgs2 has shipped over 10 million units now , releasing a firmware with bugs in it could do more harm then good and id rather wait and get a rock solid ics for our phones and for the devs to have a solid base to tweak from
lets face it they got the firmware the phone shipped with pretty dam good and i hope too see a nice stable ics release from them too
i use my phone to much to be using beta software and ive had enough nokias in my time and had enough of unstable buggy firmware and waiting for patches to come to fix the bugs
i think april sounds about right for a genuine samsung firmware that has been fully tested for stabillity and compatabillity with apps and extras

This really means nothing for international GS2's. More than likely Samsung's ICS will release in late December/early January and those on XDA will have it looong before Bell in Canada.
Bell is an North America carrier which does not have any Apple vs. Samsung court cases.
Yet, rest of the world do. That's why I can certainly say that Ice Cream Sandwich for SGS II & Galaxy Tabs will be the fastest delivery of an Android distribution (from Google release to End users) Samsung ever made.
That date is for carrier branded phones.
For international phones it would be much sooner.

Well let see when is ICS released Foote galaxy S2. There is no even ant sign of CM9. Earlier there was issue of mic not working during call. Now after release of the leak version, lots of stuff are working but unstable, but now no any news of CM9 for galaxy S2. It seems we have to depend on Samsung rather then cm9 team for ICS. Developers pls don't be hurt. Almost all devices are getting ICS except S2. It really feels bad that we are deprived of the same. Thanks

Hope you guys that live in Europe get the update Asap. Here in Latin America (Brazil), we will receive the update maybe on Q3 2012. But, i really hope that all of us can get CM9 before April.

Its actually samsung's fault they haven't got it working yet. Samsung hasn't released kernel sources yet. I think the main obstacle right now for cm9 is the RIL is unstable. Codeworkx said once they can stabilize that they'd probably have a beta soon after. Kernel sources would give the cm9 team what they need to get RIL stable. So when we get that or a leak with stable RIL we should get cm9. I totally believe the cm team will get to the finish line long before Samsung. The other devices already getting alphas and betas of cm9 must just be easier to get working. I've read the galaxy sII is "unique" to code for because of the hardware.

At this stage i have to say im a bit pissed off that we still haven't been given ICS for our SGSII why cant they just release all the necessary code required so developers can do their thing.

There's still a lot of work to be done by Sammy.
They can't release something they don't have - makes sense, doesn't it?
As for the second part of your statement: They did. KP1, nuff said.
Definitely for that carrier.
KP1 is already released and all the major functions work. So another month max it will take to release the stable version.
And I didn't pay 600 US$ to Devs, but Samsung, so it's their responsibility to release it at time, hence I don't give a damn what Devs are doing.
Still I think Samsung should take a little bit of extra time, if it's needed, it's far better to release a Stable version than releasing a non stable one in a hurry. Also Google said that they would like the manufacturers to use 4.0.3 as the base version, so I don't know if Samsung will give us 4.0.1 like KP1 or directly 4.0.3.
Google also wants 4.0.3 as the base version of Ice Cream Sandwich to be used by Android handset manufacturers.

[OFFICIAL] Android 6.0 Marshmallow Update Details

So, on Nvidias twitter about an hour ago, they replied that Android 6.0 Marshmallow was "possiby" coming to the Nvidia Shield Tablet.
I wouldn't say we should get our hopes up, but again this is a "possibly" straight from Nvidia's official Twitter page, so who knows!

Nvidia Shield Tablet info (Found in replies to above tweet)

So yeah, @NvidiaShield directly replied that we could "possibly " (note the smiley face haha) get 6.0. But who knows, after the recall and all I wouldn't be surprised if Nvidia stopped caring about our Tablet.
I think it's a platform they're looking to grow, and the only thing stopping them from furthering the advancement would be a shield tablet 2. But if they know anything about gamers, we like a company that cares about our old hardware so it would be in their best interest to keep our hardware up to date. The same way that HTC is releasing Marshmallow for the m8. They don't have to do that and it would be understandable if they didn't.

Agreed, the portable was updated recently as well. I think as you said this is a long term play for Nvidia and as much as the battery issue was a really pain they will continue to support the tablet.
I am not sure if we will ever see it officially go back on sale, or if a version 2 will be released first...but either way we will see 6.0 sooner than later.
?
Hey guys, chances are getting higher for 6.0! NVIDIA just anounced a New tablet called Shield K1. Its nearly the same as ours now with same Hardware. This means, new device=New version of Android (i hope)
Androidpolice are stating " It's currently running Android 5.1.1, but NVIDIA already plans to push Marshmallow to it (along with existing SHIELD Tablet units) by the end of the year. " regarding the new version of the shield..
Nice christmas present if they hit that deadline
And for once, a UK price that isn't a straight pound for dollar swap. £149 v $199
Have any details appeared since? It seems to all be attributed down to a single tweet.

Marshmallow was guaranteed for the Shield Tablet 2. I believe before Christmas. The Shield Tablet 2 has identical hardware to our tablet aside from the stylus which means the software is more or less interchangeable so expect the upgrade to come roughly the same time for both tablets.
If it has identical hardware, does that mean [email protected] will be possible on our older shield tablets?
as that was something they said they would add to the newer tablet...
Weeks later and still no information from nvidia.

I tweeted at their official Nvidia Shield twitter account to ask for details on the Marshmallow update for the K1. They only said, "We're working on something! "
At least they're working on it. I just wish we had more details.

Damn, it's sounding like it's really not a priority.
It really isn't... More than likely they have another tablet coming out.
