Just got this phone... - Fascinate General

Ok so I just got this phone (coming from a DInc), just wondering what ROM is the best one out there. I am already rooted and have clockwork installed, now itching to put a ROM on and get rid of Bing lol.

Did you flash Clockwork in Odin? You can't do it from ROM Manager on this phone.
JT's super clean is a safe bet. Blackhole is another popular one.

Correct you need to flash it through odin ie clockwork. I have used alot of roms so far but I like the black hole build you're own. Many options and the recent v1.4.1 is really nice. Sonsofskywalker is a great dev and keeps up on his stuff.

Also check or geekniks stupid fast kernel 1.2.3 you can use many other phones boot animations.
Sent from your mothers closet.

Honestly Ive seen absolutely no improvement in using a custom rom vs launcherpro over stock. Your better off keeping it stock for now untill 2.2 comes out.
But if your even smarter you return the phone. Dont throw away the box, you like me might not be happy with it and get stuck with it. I dont think its actually the phone im unhappy with....but more android. Android has become a disapointment to me. An OS is only as good as the applications it has.
I was a 3 time Iphone user....then switch from att to verizon in Nov 2009 and have gone through a bunch of droid phones. On Verizon its the best choice. But when Windows phone 7 or Iphone hits next year many will be gone.
I know many of you guys will chew me up over this. But I gotta speak the truth,

I had an iPhone... IMO the iPhone is a toy. I plan on giving this a go for 30 days and see if I like it or not. If I dont I will return it and go back to my DInc.
Thanks for the advice on the ROMs guys I will download that one now

Also, is there anyway to get Bing completely off the phone? And what about when I hit the search button to be able to get directions like I could on my DInc.

Yes, there is a way to get Bing completely off. I will tell you if you just read the stickies at the top, you probably didn't need to post this.
If you have root access, which is easily done, you can then use install CWM. Once you do that, you can install jt's super clean rom. That'll take care of your issues.
If you don't like the way the current launcher you are using, install ADW or LauncherPro. I personally recommend ADW as it is open source and well developed.
But again, you should have posted this in the General forum. And you should have read the stickies before posting.
Can you imagine what this forum would be like if everyone who purchased a Fascinate posted saying exactly what you are saying???

Apparently you have reading comprehension issues also so I dont know why you are trying to be hard and call me out. I have rooted, I did flash clockwork, and I did flash a ROM, but its still not functioning the same as my DInc was.

My bad. I do have reading comprehension issues...
Anyways, depends on what you want, the good ones are already in ROM Manager to download when you feel like.
Sonofskywalker's ROM is neat in that it erases everything stock and leaves only what you want to leave in there.
JT's is simple and clean.
Deoxdexed is not bad, but it does come with a theme if you're into that.

I used "Super Dark" I really like the layout, but now all my haptic feeling in the phone is gone

Ok I got it working, I flashed the stock kernel to the phone... seems to be working properly right now

Froyo just dropped for the epic. Official froyo. While us fascinate users wait for our maintenance update. **** yeah. Way to go Sammy and Verizon. I hate to have to put this phone down with this brilliant hardware but ill be on my incredible until you **** or get off the pot. Jt, adrynalyne, love you..sorry I've been out of the loop at irc. Plannning this wedding is quite the time killer. Be back in irc tomorrow when I get home

[Q] State of Fascinate and Android

Hey guys,
Sorry for this "noob"ish post. I am new to the Fascinate after being with T-Mo for 2 years, which included a G1 (running CyanMod) and a Nexus One (which also ran CyanMod). I am just hoping one of you would mind giving me a quick 2 minute catch up on where things are now with the Fascinate, as there is way too much on these forums to realistically sift through. I have some basic questions...
1)I have noticed root is good and all that. I would assume rooting is all you need to get free wireless tethering? What program do you use to wireless tether once you are rooted?
2)I keep seeing something about "lagfix". What is that? My phone doesn't seem laggy, except for all the bloatware Verizon has put on it. So any info is appreciated.
3)I'm not crazy about the stock 2.1 ROM. Are there any good custom 2.2 ROMs yet? What is generally the best ROM for the Fascinate? On the Nexus, argue as much as you want, CyanMod was far and away the best ROM. But it seems like there is no CyanMod for Fascinates. So what are my best choices?
4)Is there anything else I should know moving to this phone?
I really appreciate anyone taking the time to answer these, as I know these types of threads are not the most popular thing on here. I want to get "in the know" with my new phone, but there is already so much on these forums, it's hard to tell what is still new and relevant and what is not. Thanks guys!

Also a G1 and N1 owner. Be happy to help.
1) Wireless tethering is accomplished by myself without issue via Wireless tether app on the market. It's under the radar so to speak, but required an ad hoc connection
2) The correct lagfix is the voodoo lag fix, with the informative posts being found on the first page of this forum. Basically, Samsung used an older file system in their build, and voodoo updates it to ext4, which is alot snappier on the r/w side of things. Without it, you will encounter a slowing of your processes after a period of uptime, and usually a small freeze while the phone does things like install applications. The flip is that voodoo instructions should be read very closely, and adhered to. Failure to do so will result in phone borkage, and while always fixable, takes some time and patience to do so.
If you are unfamiliar with Odin, as I was at first, make damn sure you always use the PDA option. Failure to do so can result in terminal frustration, and possibly a close to true brick of the device.
3) There are no 2.2 ROMs yet. The Froyo OTA should hit between now and Christmas hopefully. I would like to think we will see some custom 2.2 ROMs, and maybe a CM port by the 1st. In the meanwhile there are several ROMs on this board which seem to work for the people who use them. I'm a proponent of stripping and customizing stock to suit your needs, making your ROM your own. I haven't seen enough included hacks in the available ROMs to warrant a need for them personally. We have some excellent kernels available, and some pretty slick themes and mods, which works well for me.
4) The phone has the best processor/gpu out currently. The display is fantastic, and I don't see a better device on the market currently. It does have downsides, most notably the GPS, which isn't a huge issue for me, but which also has a fix on the way, presumably to be included in the 2.2 update. I also have experienced a shortage in the Wifi reception comparative to my N1, having approx. half the range I previously enjoyed. This seems to me to be software related, so I assume it will be addressable.
If you plan to root and mod, especially if you plan to use voodoo, which I highly recommend, be careful in your reading of instructions and applications of procedures outlined in them. As great as this phone is, mistakes are costly in terms of confusion and time to correct.
Thanks for the reply. Im always impatient, and as such, have already rooted before even waiting for a first response I used the one click method though and it worked great, exactly as advertised. Root Explorer works, so I definitely am good there, and I snagged the latest build of wireless tether from the developer's page.
Now I need to get started with actually switching out the ROM. I really want all the VZ bloatware gone and Bing needs to go as well. So now I guess I have some reading to do on installing ROMs for this phone. Process seems a little more complex for this phone that it was for my N1, but that may be just because it was so long ago and I don't remember. Thanks for the response though!
I am in a similar boat I use the Droid 1 and my fascinate is at the post office waiting for me per usps tracking
I think for now I will root remove bloatware and Bing and role with that till 2.2 maybe touchwiz aswell as I hear u can save ram that way and I paid for launcher pro so might aswell use it.
Yea, from what I've read, it sounds like putting a new ROM on is kind of pointless, since it won't be 2.2 anyway. So I think I just need some good instructions for this voodoo/lagfix stuff and some good instructions for removing all the vzn bloatware that comes installed. Once I do those two things, I think I'll be good. I am already running ADW, which I love, so I don't need any customization there, and wireless tether seems great. So I guess I just need to continue searching. There are lots of topics on the voodoo/lagfix thing on here, but I just want to make sure I find the most complete comprehensive set so I dont screw anything up
I'm somewhat of a new member, but have silently read through these forums for months... I used Dirks d02 sv1200kernal and the voodoo lag fix, I have been very happy with my phone since. I have been reading about the roms right now and don't see a point just yet. Freeze the bloatware from verizon and you will love your phone. Also have switched to LPPlus and think my phone operates so smooth!
I just received my fascinate friday, best buy sucked me in, lol, and I have no regrets. This phone is amazing, better than my d1 and d2. I too had a lot of the same questions about the lagfix and what not and would just like to say thanks, this thread def helped me understand. Can't wait until 2.2 roms

I posted on replacing the stock launcher with ADW or LP, as well as a couple lists of what is safe to remove. It's easy enough. I'm mobile our I would link the threads, but the replacement of bing its also covered in a post that includes some zips that will help.

What is LPPlus? Is it worthwhile/simple to do?
To everyone else, I am glad I was not the only other one on the fence. XDA can be a bit scary sometimes, because you don't wanna ask something dumb/"noob"ish, but at the same time, if you haven't been there since the beginning, playing catch up can be hard. I will say everyone in the Fascinate threads has been nice and really helpful so far. I am slowly working through getting my phone the way I want it. Its just a shame that Verizon has to mess up the phone with all this garbage. I dont care much for the iPhone (design or software), but the one thing they do right, which comes at the cost of being "closed", is that they can dictate the user experience right out of the box. Unfortunately a lot of people are just too timid or incapable of doing the things we do to our phones to get them "right". Its a shame too, because people base their opinions on what Android the phone company gives you rather than what it can truly be. Regardless, I appreciate everyone's help and look forward to being a part of this community. I work IT at a school, so I know my way around a PC, but I wish I just knew more about Android coding and how phones work to be a true contributor to ROMs, etc. At least I know I helped a few people by speaking up and creating this thread. Thanks again everyone!!!
Edit: Im putting this in as an edit, but I just realized that LPPlus is probably Launcher Pro Plus. Have you used ADW? Is there a difference? What do you see as its advantages over ADW?
I personally (and i think most of us here would agree) don't have a problem with anyone asking "dumb" questions, if they haven't already been answered. the main issue is that most of the new posts are either "I didn't read the instructions and F*ed up my phone", "hey i heard this crazy rumor it must be true", "Can someone explain the same thing there are already 6 other topics about" and "how can we take X from this other phone and use it on mine". your questions are understandable and asking questions before you jump in saves a lot of headaches from having to fix something you tried without understanding it. and honestly, no need to be afraid to ask anything, worst case scenario someone like me *****es at you over the internet. who cares. =)

Finally ............ !!!

My wife and I both brought each other EVO's for Christmas......
Im upgrading from Hero and I got her to finally leave her BELOVED Blackberry's....lol
can't wait to things running... and besides rooting
what do u suggest I do next ??
what's a EVO Must? lol
Screen protector and an Otterbox case lol
Sent from my EVO's 4G You?........I thought so
Extended battery
tell her to buy you a brand new car so you can plug in your brand new phone in and listen to music :x
I suggest you RESEARCH a lot. Find out what you want to do, ask questions, get answers, and go nuts.
I recommend the ROM Wiki in the android development forum, check em out and see which you like when you're ready to start flashing customs.

Nice screen protector that comes with the CM Barely There case.
All smartphone enthusiasts commented on the niceness and the low profile of that case when they saw it.
First root, then flash Myn's Warm rom rls4. I'm kind of a noob. Tried every rom out there and if you want your 4g working and everything Myn's the best and fastest. Also for awesome battery life flash Calk's kernel. I'll give you these links. Both me and the wife are set up like this. The rest is up to you. Bookmark this website and refer to it like a bible. Also a great theme to use is Riptide's colorNclear. We have some of his addons as well, the speedo batt is really cool. The updated launcher pro is a great launcher. It has so many options. Well enough, her are the links.
Myn's Warm
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=793471&highlight=Myn
Calk's kernel- I use 131- scroll down to second post- look for "SBC for Netarchy's CFS More Aggressive 4.2.1 (also known as 131)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=876590&highlight=calkulin's
And last Riptide's theme I use V9 the one on post #2 with slayers transitions, allows you to add all the cool naddons. Oh, I also have the blue dialer. He has several colors available.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=727117
Now one thing I found out if you dont already know is
1. flash rom then reboot
2. flash kernel then reboot
3. flash Riptides theme then reboot
4 then if you want the addons you can go ahead all at once without rebooting in between each one.
If you try to flash the rom, theme, and kernel without rebooting it will stick in a bootloop. If you have any questions about any of this fell free to hit me up [email protected]
Have fun!!!

If you don't have 4G/don't care for it and or HDMI, I suggest checking out CM6.1.1 Rom and read alot (Especially OP)
I recommend not flashing at least get a feel for Android, sense and the evo before moving on to other roms. I do appreciate the roms and what not but be prepared to deal with non stop issues with custom roms. If you don't mind tinkering with your phone everydAY to get it to work right then maybe custom roms could be your thing. I use my phone all day everyday but its because I use it, not because I'm trying to get things to work " better". I have been down this road briefly with the evo, but on my tilt 2, I was a Rom flashing fool.
I would recommend rooting but staying stock over all. a while back rooting the evo was simple via unrevoked, I don't think that method works anymore. Why root? Well WiFi teather is the main thing I rooted for. You can run apps like adfree, and of course you can flash roms. Oh and if you root you can put a custom recovery that let's you do usefully things like nandroid backup and restore. With this you can a complete image backup of your phone settings, apps and data.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
In general, yes some roms require a lot of tinkering.
But some (like myns rls4) is out of the box stock experience perfection IMO. Since his ROMs are based on the stock OTA's and kernels, they share a lot of the good stuff of the OTA roms, without the bloat, and with added asthetic effects as well.
Thanx for all the info and tips... I'm ready for root ... think I'm gonna use the one from unRevoked .. thanx again
No screen protector. Believe it or not, it doesn't need it but get the otter box case--worth the money. My Evo gets beat up a lot and and my three-year-old son plays Angry Birds and bangs it around. Tests have been done on the Evo without a screen protector and it's surprisingly resistant to scratches.
I suggest you DON'T root it for a while and see what you can do with your phone, you'd be surprised. Unless of course, there's a specific ROM you'd like to try.
I rooted my phone because I didn't like the look of SenseUI and wanted to try CyanogenMod 6. Otherwise, I wouldn't have rooted my phone and just left it stock.
must root, just wait til there a 1 click ,everything else is role of the dice. Warning you will become a flashaholic, so many great roms and kernals.
have fun

why?
i never ever had a problem with unrevoked....
Unrevoked does not work on newest hboot. I would not even attempt to root and nand unlock until unrevoked has the tool to do it. I see alot of people bricking their Evo's, killing 4G keys so that it never works again, and alot of other problems.
You should ask in the Q&A section how to root your setup. Write down the hardware#. Its in menu, settings, about phone, hardware info. Also in software write down PRI version, software# and possibly Baseband. Now power down. Once off, hold volume down and press and hold the power button until the screen comes completely back up. Now you're in Hboot. Write down the hboot version. Now ask a question about how to root your phone and include all this info. You should be able to get the right answer.
Woah someone mentioned Otterbox cases. The cases they offer for the evo are terrible! Steer clear especially of the Defender. I have the defender and commuter both are junk.
Check out tridentcase.com their cyclops case is my favorite so far.

Seriously? No. Don't do that. Well, do everything up until the part about making a new thread to ask how to root. That will just piss people off. There are already threads with step by step guides for rooting whatever hardware you have.
Instead, make note of your hboot version and take a trip to the Android Development and Hacking section of the Evo forums and look for a thread with "[ROOT]" in the title, and make sure the hboot version in the title matches yours. All the new root guides will specify which hboot they root. Everything you need to know should be in the guide.
Oh another small thing, you never hear any complain about the stickiness of the screen . I didnt like it so I got a Matt finished screen protector. I found them on eBay @ 3 for $5. They do take a bit of quality away from the colors but I would say it only hurts the quality by 5%. In return your finger will slide across the screen so much easier. It was worth it for me.

For those holding out on root & awaiting "Official 2.2 OTA", DON'T!! -> read w/in ->>

For those holding out on root & awaiting "Official 2.2 OTA", DON'T!! -> read w/in ->>
When I got my Evo, I wanted to wait for the official Sprint ROM/OTA upgrades because I wanted to keep my phone stock. I didn't want root to affect my phone's ability to OTA upgrade and get the latest and greatest from Sprint.
After many advice from others, I decided to root. This is where you will see the repeating theme - "I rooted and loaded a ROM and have never looked back", or "I rooted and upgraded the ROM from the dev section and have never been happier". I certainly agree.
The fact is, when (now IF) the official 2.2 comes out, you will get the EXACT OTA content here just as quickly (probably faster) and be able to flash to that if you wish. Most likely, at that time, you will want an enhanced version such as deodexed. It is not worth holding out on root just because you want the OTA.
With root, you are opening new options such as forcing the phone to roam only, make real/full backups, modify your phone both visually and functionally, and so much more. After root, battery life can certainly be improved by tweaking your phone (remove bloatware, keep unwanted services from starting, etc.)
When I got my Epic, I rooted immediately. I have been running DK28 since it dropped and enjoying what 2.2 has to offer. If/when the official comes out, I will upgrade. There is simply no risk of missing out.
So for you who are on the line, I encourge you to root and move forward. You will have a new world of options and enjoy your phone so much more.
Cheers.
It's true, and we're not that far from seeing a true Gingerbread port too.
Not to mention, with Odin, this phone is extremely hard to FUBAR and very easy to revert back to stock if needed. One click root makes the rooting process brainless...
I was in the same boat a few months ago. I viewed "rooting" as a hack or purposely "damaging" the phone. Eventually, I caved in; everything is hindsight from that point. Now, I will NEVER use a stock ROM again. Having access to the system allows me to take control of the device that I OWN; not Sprint or Samsung. If I don't want and application on the phone, I simply remove it. If I want to change the appearance, I install a theme.
Honestly, if you own an Epic, there's absolutely no reason why you shouldn't root the phone. Heck, I'm not even using 2.2 for the lack of a stable GPS lock...

I agree with most of this. But from my point of view, I don't even use it for the control, I use it cause it works better. Oh, and the themes. I just hope the devs and themers stick around a while, cause I have this phone for another 20 months :/
new devs and themers will come along. the cdma touch pro 2 is approching 18 months in age and when i stop by that forum, its just as busy as ever, and i dont even recognize the names of roms people are talking about, because the chefs that were cooking when i was rocking that have moved along, but new ones are stepping up in their place.
Installed TrulyEpic 1.2 last night in just a few minutes. No problems at all. GPS is fantastic (I thought it was working before, but now - ) Is it just me, or does the stock ROM limit the display brightness? I think it actually LOOKS better but YMMV.
It's comforting to know that I now have a phone that will probably never be truly obsolete for the next couple years as long as there are ROM builders out there.
but i tried to root using the one click and recovery and had issues it would tell me permission denied at the end after it reboooted, i used z4 to root and it worked fine, tried to use it again and still same thing, then installed rom manager and then try clockwork, nogo. so i took it all off and will jsut deal with it when it comes ota

I'd agree with you, except that I've had all kinds of issues rooting my Epic, ranging from USB drivers that fail to install, various one click root scripts that error out, a cruddy usb cable from Samsung, and an inability to get Odin to even look at my phone crosseyed.
I'm not brainless ... but nothing about rooting and flashing my phone has been straightforward. After wasting hours wading through (volunteer-written, open source, karmically-blessed) inconsistent instructions, I've lost patience. I just want an official, OTA copy of Froyo that isn't going to brick my phone or waste my time.

I've never had this problem. There must be something wrong and it isn't the one click. Could be your USB cable. Make sure your phone is in debugging mode. The OP is 100% right. Why use any stock ROM? If we do ever get the OTA, our devs will make it better and in about 100 different flavors.

It was tested even more today trying to find a way to root without a PC (as I don't own a PC... well I have one that runs Win2K and no internet at home... yeah.) I did download z4root but it never got past the first screen...it literally loaded for an 1hr the 1st time and 35mins the second before I got ticked and just uninstalled. I may be new to the android scene (long time winmob user that fled after testing a wp7 craptastic phone) but something just isn't right here X/ I mean really.... I simply want flash (outside of skyfire) and to wirelessly tether without having to pay ANOTHER $30 a month.... ...
So yeah, /rant
Ota can come ANY DAY NOW *looks angrily at the sky*
Epic is as Epic does

I've never had this problem. There must be something wrong and it isn't the one click. Could be your USB cable. Make sure your phone is in debugging mode. The OP is 100% right. Why use any stock ROM? If we do ever get the OTA, our devs will make it better and in about 100 different flavors.

yea it was set to debug , its the original cable that came with it. i have not tried it on a diff pc, it could be a vista issue
Good point. But unless Samsung or sprint announce the update is out. Somebody has to be stock just incase they quietly release the update.

yep. Im staying on stock for the simple fact that my phone aint broke why try and fix it lol.
I recently flashed DK28, then converted to ext4 and the bonsai mod. Froyo means I can view more webpages and download the froyo apps from the market place. ADW lancher was slow on 2.2, but lancher pro works fine. Also I wasn't getting great battery life but it's back to normal after I set my screen brightness to automatic. Overall I'm happy with my decision.
I too was one that didn't want to root and I was paying for the sprint hotspot :-\ but once I got the first bill for $130 I quickly youtube how to videos on rooting the epic and never looked back. 2.2 runs great with my only bug being, on some calls out I couldn't hear the other person unless I put it speaker phone. I worked my way around this bug by just hitting the speaker button before every call then quickly hit it again to shut off the speaker. It takes very little effort and I'm happier than ever with my epic and I don't give a rats ass about the OTA 2.2
The reason i first rooted was for wireless tether and to get rid of all the bloatware. After that i found all these awesome root apps like ADFREE and ShootME titatanium back up and many others and i can now not live with out adfree its the best app ever!!
After trying wireless tether it was ok then mobile ap came along and i love it. And for this reason alone im staying stock and honestly this is the first phone that does everything i need and doesnt give me any issues even on stock rom. I did get a custom kernal i flashed a good amount of the 2.1 roms and didnt really care for any of them besides noobnls rom. i mean i like custom roms that are blank of extra bloatware and what not.
But yes i agree dont wait to root, you get so many added benefits to make your phone run fast and get many free apps that are ad supported but because of ad free they are like the real one.
Best decision to root.
And for any reason i need to go back to stock to take the phone in i have all the stock flashables on my sd card so i just flash them and its easy as pie.
One click root never gave me any issues with the samsung cord or with any other cords i have.
I agree, I just got tired of it and rooted and installed a custom ROM (Trulyepic 1.2). It's definitely nice. It's also nice to feel free from the shenanigans of corporations trying to do as little as possible to make money off you while maintaining PR.
I admit, it's a bit scary to do with your phone. I'm lucky in that I've gotten familiar with rooting with my Viewsonic Gtablet, but I have to admit that I was pretty nervous the first time.
iggybug said:

Hey dude, i haven't rooted my phone and I have the 2.2. rom on my computer... it was super easy to install. If you want the update without having to root, just pm me if you want it, and ill upload it and send u a link. with instructions.
I did the update and my GPS was fubar. I had to flash back to stock and now I'm scared to flash back to 2.2 for fear of losing GPS again. How is your GPS because I really liked froyo but don't want to jeopardize my GPS.

My GPS was actually fixed by going to FroYo...but I had some miscellaneous issues, so I flashed back to DI18 and am on SyndicateROM with the Xtreme Kernel. I have to get rid of setCPU soon...1.2 GHz overclock is killing my battery

Sitting on the fence

So here I sit, on the fence, with my rooted stock Epic.
Nothing has really substantiated the rumors of Froyo for the 21st, and that just makes me think it's not coming (and if SamsungJohn was going to finally say something substantial, a yea or nay would be a nice start).
But this is not a thread about the OTA.
I'm just thinking... if OTA is really imminent, then I'll just wait and let the devs work on it. But if it's not... then it's time to look at one of the available ROMs.
ViperRom 4.0.4 looks damn sweet... love the ViperWheel widget... but it was held up from its Monday release (are they waiting for source code drop too?). And there is Midnight and Nebula which I kinda like also.
I guess I could start the process of checking them out.
Or I could just sit here and wait. I'm going out of town this weekend and probably should leave things alone until I get back home.
Until then I ask anyone who is running those ROMs... would I lose Swype if I switch ROMs? I really like Swype...
I am stock/rooted, pretty much in the same situation. Will wait until the end of the month if no stock Froyo materializes will look into roms and modding a bit. I depend on my phone's functions all working for my business and would rather not take a chance that I will lose functionality by flashing to the Froyo leak.
i was waiting like you guys til the other week and i went to bonsai, and everything is working superbly.
I was getting sick of stock rom and 2.1, not being able to have hulu or flash as well as a few apps that are must have like Humans vs aliens as well as Andy-83.
Im now just waiting for the official source so it can be improved, but ive had no issues on bonsai and reccomend it, if you want something fast and clean..
give the latest midnight a shot it works really good just wipe 3x before loading and be happy. swype works for me just have to switch text imput method from gb to swype.
Soooo. Oh., before that... I am so glad I rooted and mod. I ran midnight ... and cut my teeth on the ext4 .... the cwm .... and after root and rom messed around with themes. After my ver of midnight got a few weeks old I switched to bonzai and I love it too... it just works. Wait a few ... but its worth it.
Btw ... will we have to wait a while for the new stock 2.2 to get rooted or... is once root always root? Curious.

VIPERrom 4.0.4 does look sweet. I'm currently running FRoZen 4.0.3, and it has been great. I highly recommend the VIPERroms. I be jonesin' for that 4.0.4 son!
I use Frankenstein.

There's too many bugs in dk28 which will make yu scramble for di18, but when you go back you will miss the little upgrades that did work so it'll be this constant struggle within.

ROM's
I spent last weekend loading up all of the different (read more popular) ROM's and the most stable and straight forward one to me was Nebula Seven Sisters. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=863154
The developer made it a point of keeping a lot of the stock look and features while improving on what Froyo brought to the table. I did not have any real functional issues with Viper, Midnight or TrulyEpic, it just seemed that Nebula was trying to keep the experience closer to stock than the others.
Other people will say they like the modified skins, the launcher pro, the Viper wheel, etc. For them, that is the case. That is the great thing about the developers of the ROM's, they are doing this to cater to different crowds.
So really, there is no need to wait for Sprint or Samsung here, download Odin, grab some ROM's and have fun with your phone! All I can say is to make Clockwork backups often, it makes the process of going back to the ROM you liked two days ago so much easier!
Randy
could try the Syndicate Rom, for 2.1.... see how fast the 2.2.1 roms WILL be after source... but other than that, they are all stable from what I read, some people have a few issues, depends a lot on you though. If you have a ton of stuff to reinstall after a clean wipe, might as well wait out the weekend, not for an OTA, slim chance there... but just so you have time.... sometimes things take longer, you may go thru 5 roms before you find the one you like... etc.

DK28 is buggy but it is better than 2.1 by far. You really don't lose anything by going with one of the available ROMs right now. Presumably they will all have an update once the new version is sent out from Sprint (whether it be on the 21st or not). If you're running a custom 2.2 ROM, you'll just do a CWM backup, update to the newer version of whichever ROM you like, and then restore your data.
I went back and forth between Quantum and Bonsai ROM today. It takes no more than 10 minutes to fully swap ROMs. Just do it, you'll be glad you did. And if a new version of 2.2 comes out in the next 5 days, it will only take a few minutes (max) of your time to upgrade to it.

Is 7sisters smoother than bonsai?Im asking because I want minimal rom so I can add my own things to it.
Well, I've just flashed DK28 and CWM just finished converting to EXT4. It's party time.
Viper brings some great stuff to the table.
Nebula is stability first, which is important to me since my business and my phone are virtually inseparable.
I also like Midnight's BYOR modular format, keeping bloat to a minimum.
I'll have a fun time with this.

No need to odin, odin only if nothing else works!
In ur case pull out bettery, put it back in,hold power+vol down+camera to get back into cmw3 and try again.
This will save you some time.
Everyone should be warned of one MAJOR issue. If you use you phone for primary internet access anywhere you go; whether at home or at work or wherever. The tethering drops you no matter what you use at random. It is very frustrating and annoying. If it wasn't for this I'd be 100% satisfied with nebula already; but it isn't the rom's problem, it's with DK28. Some people use wireless tethering but I cannot with 2 different desktops I use my phone for internet connectivity.

Make sure you watch some of Randy Shear's videos on youtube if you're new at this. He very slowly goes through many of the basic steps in putting a new rom on your phone. If you skip a step you cause yourself triple work. Just take your time and watch a few of his video's and just put the rom on your want. His Viper Apoc 4.0.2 video is excellent.

hello all!

Well last night I cracked the screen on my Droid X, So this morning I woke up and realized that I had to buy a new phone.
I went searching the xda Forums for a phone that still had active Development going for it, but a phone that wasn't too expensive. SOOOOOOOOo I decided on the Droid Incredible! (found one in new condition for $95) I'm very impressed with the STILL active development on the DInc, Considering the Droid X is Newer, and development tapered off well before last Christmas... There hasn't been a good rom released for the X in MONTHS!
I'm not new by any means to the rooted/Rom'd community, and I'm more than Positive that I can share a lot of good input.
So if any dev's need help/testers, etc, LET ME KNOW!
So tell me guys - What rom/kernal tweaks/themes/radio mods should I start with?
Theres TOO many for me to decide on my own!
Thanks!
CM7 with incredikernel.
Or if you want it to be a little fancy with less tweaking and work involved, go MIUI and incrediknerel.
ICS is available, but doesn't run as well as the GB ROM's do.
Yeah I'm not too crazy about ICS myself, Is everything working on CM7 for the DInc?
How about performance? FC's or laggy scrolling?
Because on the X we never had Camera, Gps, Etc., and The only way to get past laggy scrolling was to OC/OV, which still Killed your battery in half a day lol
and then on CM9 We had some crazy bugs like being stuck in landscape mode which I CANNOT STAND
Thanks for the Starting point though!

To start with, the X had a Locked Kernal, which is probably the reason why the development tapered off so fast

With little/moderate/heavy use?
For my X to last that long, I would literally have to turn off GPS, Wifi, Data, Background data, Auto sync, etc lol
Basically what I'm saying is that I'm very impressed with everything I'm reading about the Incredible
If you are thinking about CM7 and want a more stable, smoother, more optimized ROM for Dinc, and also don't want the hassles of chasing nightlies, try "inc-deck-gingerbread."
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1119857
It's a CM7 clone... that is better than the official one from CM. The only real difference, as far as features, is that inc-deck comes with a vanilla launcher, instead of ADW launcher like CM has. Just install the launcher of your choice, if you don't want vanilla. I like Go launcher EX.
Incredikernel is what I use also.
mods (ones that I remember at least)
ext4 for all... normal data version
v6 supercharger... balanced

the inc is about a 1000x's better for hacking then all verizon motorola phones combined. lol. and give the latest cm7 nightly a try with the newest incredikernel. i can link you to ext4 mods, v6 supercharger and adrenalyne shot too.
Thanks for all the input guys, I've been learning a lot from these posts!
I used v6 Supercharger for a while with my X, but stopped using it because I never stayed on 1 rom for more than a couple days at a time and got so sick of setting it up every day lol.
I could just never find a rom that I could settle with because they all had their problems...
So other than OC/UV, what else are the benefits from IncrediKernal?
Also, My phone hasn't arrived yet, So I don't know which version of android or HBoot is on it yet, But is there anything In specific that I need to look for or that I need to know before I start to root?
And, with the X, We had what we called an "SBF", which basically was an un-brick for our phones. If our phones ever bricked or bootlooped after flashing anything, we just plugged our phones into the computer, booted into recovery mode, and "SBF'ed" back to stock. And basically, our phones went right back to stock, unrooted, bloated Froyo or Gingerbread, and we had a 2.3.340 file for Froyo that we could flash, and a 2.3.602 Gingerbread File.
So is there anything like that the Dinc?
Thanks again guys!
This is the kind of community that I was wishing the DX community was, and now I'm glad I'm gonna be apart of the Dinc Forums!

well, its REALLY REALLY and i stress REALLLLLLLY hard to brick an incredible. the only way i know of is pulling battery while flashing radios or double flashing them. most stuff is recoverable via a RUU. ive never had to use one personally, because i dont ever mess with radios. but here is the website where all the hboots, sbf's and stuff are found.

Thanks for the insight on the whole SBF/RUU deal
I'm familiar with ADB from my first two android phones, but NEVER used ADB once with my DX, so I'm a little rusty. Should I be worried about setting up my SDK and what not before I get my phone just to get it out of the way? or no?
Also, I was reading about Downgrading to S-off, and obviously I don't know what version of Android is on my Incredible until I get it, but is downgrading completely necessary for Root/Rom?
I'm guessing you guys also flash .zip's thru clockwork or rom manager?
I briefly had a samsung Fascinate that used Voodoo recovery instead of clockwork, Is why I ask.

You dont really need the whole sdk, just adb, fastboot, and their drivers. You can pick that up here http://dinc.does-it.net/ADB/ADB-Fastboot-USB-Drivers_v4_(x86)(x64).zip. And here http://unrevoked.com/rootwiki/doku.php/public/windows_hboot_driver_install is how to install the drivers if you dony already know.
You can get root and flash roms without being s-off, however you cant flash radios, hboots, or splash screens. I would highly recomend to do it anyways, as it makes your phone much easier to troubleshoot and fix if it were to break somehow in the future. It also makes it much easier to reroot should you need to do an ruu or somehow loose root.
Yes roms and mods are flashed thru cwm (prefered) or amon ra recovery, and ruus, hboots, radios, splash screens, and recoveries thru hboot.

I hear ya! I'm contemplating delaying my upgrade until late summer to see how things develop. All these upcoming phones have excellent specs minus battery capacity so I need to see what changes my mind. Not to mention, I've been checking out various other forums (GNex and Rezound) and many users just seem more argumentative and blatantly rude. I guess that comes with the increased user base.

The only thing that doesn't work in cm7 that I'd wish worked is 720p video. I can live without. To set voltage, most use an app called incredicontrol. Overclocking is built into cm7. Iamtheonetheycallneo has a flashable voltage script, that lowers the voltages for the high and low voltage part of the frequency.
