Sony signs deals with Foxconn??

Acording to engadet mobile sony has signed a deal with foxconn to produce there android phone(s).
Could they also being using them for there next wm phone.
it would make sense to do a deal for mutiple phones with one company, as there could be discounts and stuff by doing muliple deals and we already know SE dont want to use htc anymore.
might be promising, they make handsets for nokia and a couple others I think..
does look like they're doing the x2 Winmo as well
http://www.digitimes.com/news/a20081223PB200.html
shame, i wanted asus to make it.
does anyone know anything about this company? are they any good? what have they made before?
What would you like to know? Foxconn has been used a lot by Apple in the past. I believe they made most of the iPods and such. I believe they have been responsible for some iPaqs bij Compaq/HP.
Guess they are qualified enough to produce a Winmo phone. No worries about that.
To be honest, I'm a bit gutted they moved away from HTC. They seem like a good company. Might have to make my next phone a proper HTC is this is true, and the new X2 isn't up the scratch.
Just looked on wikipedia, did not notice how big they are and how many products they have helped to produce. they make htc look like small fry (look at there revenue/net income compared with htc).
For those like me who dont know about the company look on wiki, the helped produce the iphone, ipod, mac mini, mac air, macbook pro, ipod nano, ps2, ps3, wii, xbox 360, amazon kindle, phones from motorola, nokia and SE.
As well as this they make pc parts and motherboards for big companys like asus, dell, hp and sony. heatsinks for amd and intel branded motherboards.
this is a big company that makes very big products but are not very well known as they dont have there own branding on the product and parts they make.
it was rumered that mobinova were to make the x2 a while back
if foxconn\ (mobinova) are making the android phone that does not mean theyll do the wm one though.

i think (but may be wrong) that mobinova is part on foxconn (a company owned by foxconn and as such meaning foxconn is making it, if u know what i mean. think retro studios make the metriod prime games but are owned by nintendo so its a nintendo game).
it only says android phones at the mo but looking at there experiance in with ipaqs and phones like iphone, sony will probally use them to make there next x phone (which i think will be wm not android),
If HTC do not make the X2, I'm buying Touch Pro 2 or 3.

AGREED.
The main reason I would only ever buy HTC is this forum.
Who else would agree with this statement?
We should set up a poll methinks.
I wonder if HTC know about this forum, and if they knew just how many people buy HTC because of this forum, I think they would sponsor it, if only in a small way, monetarelly speakng that is

What to get after the HD?

I've got to say I love my HD. Almost everything about it... The big let down for me is the camera. I can get some fantastic shots out in the open during the day. But go inside and introduce people to shot and its a crock of ****. I've got the topaz cam cab installed but it makes little difference. Nearly all pictures of my kids come out blurry.
So, I've started looking around for what to get next. Sadly, at the moment, I dont seem to be able to find anything that comes close to my expectations. That Toshiba TG01 sounds good, but I hate the look of it. I like the look of the HTC Hero, but reviews let it down, saying its essentially a magic with a style upgrade.
What are other people considering after their Touch HD's?
The Omnia II looks like a great phone and would be the phone I would upgrade to, but since its not a HTC phone it gets no XDA support which could be a big blow (is for me). If your okay with that, I'd recommended the Omnia II.
It feels as if we have come to the end of the road whit the Blackstone,
yet there is nothing new at the horison.
The next thing I expect from a phone is multitouch, still only iPhone
has that to offer. Isnt that strange?
Basicly Id like a HTC Hero whit better hardware, multitouch and something new...
Read about nVidia haveing a new better chipset and prosessor.
When will that hit the market?
I agree with you KB, lack of XDA support is a big no no for me as well.
Ethania, pardon me being a newb, but what defines a multitouch device?
Which current HTC product has the best camera?
I'm looking for something with mindows mo/symbian, better camera with flash, no bigger than the touch hd and lots of programs to play with.
Currently looking at the Omnia 2, Omnia HD, N97/86 or waiting for HTC to make a phone with a decent camera. I played with a mates SE C905 yesterday and I could see myself going for the Omnia 2 or Omnia HD for the camera - miles better than anything on a HTC device.

I would say:
A device which tracks more than one point on the screen simultaniously.
How does that sound? Maybe Im forgetting some important technical term,
but for us mortals, I think this is enough
i wish id held out for an n97 having been a nokia man for years naturally i wanted a n97 but im on o2 and they dont want to sell it because here in the uk that's who you get an iphone with, so i got a touch hd and im deeply disappointed no 3d graphics, crap camera, no native networking/file sharing support, slow wifi transfer speeds, crap video playback, poor music player all things i could do out of the box without hasstle on my old 1st gen n95! not to mention its SLOW!!!
i shouldn't have to hack n mod my phone to make it work reasonably
touch hd for sale 2 months old good as new !!lol!!
sorry if im ranting just for my first winmob im not impressed

If you don't mind waiting, the HTC Firestone/Leo is suppose to come this year and is supposed to be the successor to the BlackStone/HD. I think it upgrades all of the hardware.

Hopefully the camera will be better in low light situs than the touch HDs cam.
The Leo looks effing brilliant
I like the Omnia 2 but couldn't stand the dangling stylus! Why can't they build it into the device!
I like the HTC design but is disappointed with its quality. My HD has to go back to service twice and the service centre is in another state so the turnaround is slow.
After sales service is important for me and I understand there is a Samsung walk-in service centre here in Sydney Australia.
The NEXT PHONE...
Sony Ericsson Xperia X3 (Rachael)...
Excellent Now I have two to choose from when they arrive, the X3 and the Leo
To be fair Ive always got on well with Sonys. The cameras are always tip top on them.
walkin service sounds like a winner - I like the fact that there are many SE ad Nokia centres around the UK but I'm yet to see a drop in HTC one - although their base is in Milton Keynes which is in the next county - still too far and too many annoying roundabouts!

The Zii isn't a phone though.
did a quick research and I think there are three or maybe 4 devices to wait for -- SE X2 , SE X3 , HTC Leo -- theyre all almost equal by spec except Leo has more ram (screen size doesnt count ) the fourth device (60% that Im wrong) could be the rumored HTC device with Nvidia chipset-- I have a big "I dont know or Im confused" about that device, cuz maybe its the Leo with the chipset!!!
BTW: what happened to those rumors about microsoft phone with tegra??

They were just that, rumours.
The upcoming Zune HD will use the Tegra chipset but, like the Zii that was linked-to on the previous page, it's just a media player.

should i trade in for a dell streak?

Hey everybody, I currently have an 8gb dell venue probut I'm having doubts about it. First off I am in art and I can't afford an unlock code. Secondly, there is a major lack in dvp development when compared to other windows phone devices.
So do you guys think I should trade for a dell streak or wait it out?

And, not sure what you mean here. If it runs on Windows Phone 7, it'll run on a Venue Pro. Can you give a specific example of what you are trying to get at here? Or did you mean you think Android has a richer app pool in general? While this is true, I don't think there is a lack of development for WP7, it just takes some time for the developers to get the apps out there. The current app count is closing in on 10K quickly. How many do you need?
So do you guys think I should trade for a dell streak or wait it out?

I think they fill very different roles- one is a phone, one a tablet. Only you can answer which of these roles you need, which will answer your question.
The deal streak is available on art, so I wouldn't need to unlock it.
When I say dvp development, I mean the homebrew and ( I don't know the proper term for this on windows phone) rooting

I think for the time being you're going to see more significant homebrew development on Android that WP7. I know people are doing it and some good stuff, but the homebrew community is much smaller.
It sounds to me like you're trying to convince yourself. Just call Dell, tell them it locks up constantly and you want to RMA it. They'll refund your money.
If homebrew were an important factor to my decision process I'd (personally) go to something like the Nexus S, or an Atrix (though I am in the US and don't know which are or are not on art). The Streak would be very low on my list of priorities, because (once again) it isn't a phone
I see, well I wanted to get a phone with a large screen because I already have a nice android with a good Dec community. I know dell streak is a tablet first and foremost but im comfortable with it as a phone.
At the same time I like the 4.1 inch screen and QWERTY keyboard.....
Also I can't return it, I bought it on craigslist for 340
Sent from my HTC Glacier using XDA App
Well, in that case, enjoy!
As an aside, in my personal opinion, a phone is something I can actually fit in my pocket. Ideally, it is something that I can put in my pocket and then comfortably walk around without it stabbing me in the groin.

Go Dell Streak6 Yeah!!!!!!
they finally replied, tbh it just sounds like they don't care about there users and they are embarrassed that dj steve and others on here managed to do a better job for free then there highly payed engineers who have only managed to make things worse
"@Everyone else suggesting we release code for custom Dell UI enhancements-
We appreciate the request, and customer satisfaction is a key guiding principle at Dell. Our official position is we support, in principal, the publishing of basic GPL code. However, we have chosen not to support the corresponding code for our enhancements and extensions"
I don' like these sentences, you can say from beginning what the answer is. They start how they care and then they say "we don't care". It is like you will say "Sun is shinning but it is night"...
Damn it! What the hell on earth that makes Dell engineers think not to release the Drivers? Ain't they fell shame on the Stock Rom while the other Custom Roms are far way better than it?

lol.. I'm an engineer (obviously not for dell) and what makes you think we have the right to do that even if we want to.. the company says what we can release unfortunately.. dell is stupid for not releasing it because it means *I* and many others will never buy a dell phone again because of their lack of support (IE updates) and unwillingness to allow others to fix the mess they created..
Screw Dell. I like this phone, but if they're not willing to "get with the times" then they deserve to fail as a company.
I just found Dell Facebook page, I will just comment everything they will write saying how they don't care and that they should release drivers. Now I read that Asus did that for their Transformer, so why the Dell can't?
C'mon guys, social marketing is very strong, we can use it, they will not like it if they have below each message how they don't care about customers
We will make them release the drivers sooner or later

I posted a comment on the facebook page, lets hit em hard guys!

Yes! Thank you! We can get them guys, we can use social marketing against them. They really won't like it if they have bad comments below each post!
Hmmm do you guys remember some weeks ago when HTC said on their page that there won't be a new Android version for the HTC Desire due to lack of memory? There were many comments of angry/disappointed users all over their page and HTC finally said that an Android upgrade would definitely be available very quickly! It seems HTC listen to users more than any other company, don't you think? Their response about this matter was fast!
Yes, but do you think they will do it if there will be no angry responses on Facebook? I guess not... they don't care about customers, it is just giving them bad reputation, this is why they changed their mind.
With Dell it is the same, they don't care about customers, but they don't want bad reputation on Facebook, so what we gonna do about it?
left a comment on facebook, lets if what happens
Just left my comment hope they listen to us.

Dell could release the code and give me the 10" version and it still wouldn't change my mind. I will never again purchase a dell product. That said I do love this phone, no thanks to dell. Dj-steve has made this a great device. Have you guys seen the HTC holiday. That will be my streak replacement. Dual core, and 1gig of ram. The only down side is the 4.5" screen, but I can live with that.

Dell Venue Pro - Awesome phone!

just come from iphone and HTC sensation
both excellent but I wanted to go back to windows phone (had a HTC HD7 before) but with a keyboard
I must say this is the best phone I have ever had
The construction is beautiful, the keyboard is the best I have ever used (=BB), its lighteningly quick, the IE browser is better then webkit (I can enter some forms in ebay and on forums that I could never do on iphone), the AMOLED screen is super sharp and marketplace is full enough for me (flight control & angry birds ).
The latest version of WP7 is also super smooth.
I really hope that Dell brings out a non-keyboard version (as this is more popular) and markets these hard to service providers come mango.
Dell showed it could make great handheld hardware with the old Axim range, and now the venue pro.
I really hope Dell make a success of their smartphone business, they really deserve to!
I strongly recommend this phone to people that want a beautiful phone with keyboard.
Especially as Dell is occasionally doing various forms of discounts on these now.
I saw DELL myself too and it's really manufactured much much better than HTC HD7 whitch I own :-(
Btw, no new DELL leakage in WP Bench app, but others are leaking hard. I'm looking forward for new Nokia and Samsung phones.
yes, something like the Nokia N8 hardware with a faster cpu and WP7 software would be awesome
I hope the Nokia/WP7 link up takes off
Nokia has always had the best cameras and phone call quality!
Doesn't this phone pack a ridiculous amount of ram? I really was in love with the idea of getting one after i sold my desire, but this made me actually change my mind...this and the fact that it's not even available in my country lol...

On your phone, go to 'settings' -> 'about' -> 'more information'.
Firmware revision number should end in .212. If not, plug your phone into your PC and launch the Zune software.
The latest firmware fixed several problems, especially instability with wifi enabled. If you haven't had any problems with your phone, I would guess you already have the latest firmware

They actually did sell a version without a keyboard. It was called the 'Dell Venue' and was running Android, not WP7. Don't think it sold very well and the forum isn't very active.

I agree - for a phone with a keyboard, I can't think of anything better at the moment.
Not sure what Dell is doing about their smartphone business. According to leaked roadmaps, there was supposed to be a new version of the Venue Pro codenamed "Wrigley". Not sure if it is abandoned or still being developed.
Dell seems to have had a lot of problems with the firmware on the phone, which apparently was outsourced. Caused a lot of problems with stability / wifi in the past and according to the threads on this forum, the firmware is not elegantly written. (The stability problems were solved by the most recent firmware update.)

I was talking about a WP7 phone.
I predict big growth in 2012 and 2013 for WP7, driven by mango and Nokia, and Dell has a chance to be part of that.
I like Android, but after usage of Android, BB, iphone and WP7, I prefer WP7.
althought I think iOS 5 (when it is released) will be a close second to Mango
Given Dell's track record launching both the Streak and the DVP, I'm not so sure we will be seeing any new phones from them in the future. Both of those launches were unmitigated disasters and made Dell look like clueless fools. The sad part is that they both turned out to be really nice phones that never sold a lick. I have to think they are taking a long hard look at whether they even want to be in the handset hardware business anymore.

the key thing with a handset is to get it to providers.
Dell have done so with tmobile in the us but not in Europe
Its a simple thing to rectify
As I said before, whilst there are people who buy keyboard mobiles, the majority of people don't want a keyboard, which is why Dell need more non-keyboard wp7 models, of which they have none.
The HTC desire z and hd7 pro also did miserably but HTC has decided to keep going with keyboard phones.
Lastly I wouldn't compare to the streak. 5" is too big for a phone and too small for a tablet.
