Froyo update - Virgin Canada - Legend General

Any idea when its coming?

Maybe the question should be more like: "Will it be released in Canada"

i highly doubt it will be out before the generic htc froyo rom...so i want to de-brand and flash the generic rom...
can anyone recommend a good guide for flashing the generic froyo rom to our specific model virgin canada legend? thanks in advance...

Canadian carriers are pretty awful at releasing updates in a timely fashion. Hopefully Virgin will break the pattern. Just to give you an idea, the predecessor to our phone, the Hero, just got an update from Telus recently... to 2.1.

I contact HTC via email about the software update for Bell/Virgin HTC Legend and they tell me to ask it to Bell/Virgin. I sent an email to Bell without answer. If anybody gets an answer from them let us know!

There's another thread about this very topic at HowardForums (can't post the link due to new account restrictions).
But anyways, apparently one of the Virgin reps is "looking into it" .. maybe we'll get an answer there soon.

I have just gotten off the phone with Virgin mobile and HTC and told them that i have the 2.2 for my legend already installed and rooted all that fun stuff i got them to send me to tech support to get the APN settings for my baby and he also let me know that the 2.2 is in devlopment up there and will be released some time soon... no exact date but he's heard that they will be supporting it...also if they do release it OTA i think they may release a patch if you agree to the OTA you may loose root and possibly never be able to root again due to the new update.. Hope this was some help.

HTC legend Rooted 2.2 FroYo Virgin Mobile

@virginmobilecan tweeted that it would be mid January prior to the New Year, and they have been releasing Froyo for the other phones fairly early than they promised, I'm thinking tomorrow?

Out for Virgin, no clue about Bell.
EDIT: Yes, Bell got it too.

Finally got it yesterday. Apps2SD is a lifesaver.
Can't change lockscreen anymore, so that sort of bites. Other than that, Love the new live wallpapers. Haven't noticed any speed increases, but It's not like i've been looking for them or paying too much attention to load times.
So far i'm really happy with it. Voice commands, flashlight, etc. all nice features.
It's a shame they didn't add the 2.2 camera interface.

Is the new version comes with the Wifi hotspot ? Anyone with the new official update let us know?
Also i'm wondering if i flash mine with the new official update, whether i can still root ?
I would like to have the wifi hotspot... coz i heard with the official update they removed this functionality that normally comes with the unbranded OTA froyo.
Thanks

It is there. Just checked on my wife's Legend.
Generally, it has been a great upgrade. The only issues are that a couple apps have not been updated by their authors in a LONG time so they do not work well on 2.2 and that for some reason, the screen lock dots were set to only come on after 5 minutes of non-use. My wife had it set to immediate before so she was annoyed that that changed.

App 2 SD isn't the lifesaver I was hoping it was... I find the apps still take up some space on the main phone even after you move them to SD. Frustrating.

I'm a Rogers customer who purchased an HTC Legend from a VM customer. Contrary to what I was told by VM, I did receive the Froyo update (today) when I checked for it on my phone (it wasn't pushed).
It includes the wifi hotspot (YAY) and while it doesn't permit pushing all apps to the SD card, it has let me move most of them there, so I'm hoping the 'low space' messages are a thing of the past.
Can't say I notice a big speed boost, but the wireless tethering is big to me, as is the ability to move most apps to the SD card. Looking forward to better voice recognition too.
All the best and good luck with your phone!

Phone seems sluggish at times after my official froyo update... even have to reboot a few times when it becomes too sluggish... i've moved all movable apps to sd but some big ones can't be moved... like swype freaking 18MB and IGO 29MB...
sluggish like finger swiping the pictures from my alblum is really slow and the picture does not follow my finger unles i move it mm by mm and slowly...
anyone experienced that?

A friend of mine on Bell's Froyo has that constantly. A hard reset fixed it though.

you should notice that froyo is much faster than stock eclair...its not subtle at all

They offered me a discount on my monthly bill for 3 months because of the mess up on android 2.2, but when I got the bill, it was still the same amount...
Sent from my HTC Legend using XDA App

Oh ho ho, they do that sometimes as a joke. They treat us like chickens...
Just call customer service and demand a 6 month adjustment, instead.
Or, before you demand such a thing, check your account's notes to see if it will be added on to the next bill. Bell and Virgin operates on advanced billing.

CDMA Hero for Sprint

Hey guys, I was wondering about the CDMA version of the Hero. I've been reading through all of the mod forums and development postings, etc etc, but none of them are in regards to the CDMA version. I am assuming that flashing the CDMA version with an official GSM ROM will brick the phone, so what do you do? I also understand that the CDMA version won't be officially released until October 11th, but what if someone has an early release of it and wants to mod it?
I would really appreciate any feedback or advice.
Thanks!!!
There are very few Sprint Heros around for review purposes and whatnot, and maybe some dev phones but who knows. There is no CDMA ROM yet for it. It's up to the people who have the phones in their hands to extract the ROM and tweak it for root use.
I knew that since this was the first US CDMA Android phone that it would be a little while until anyone was able to extract the Roms, But from all of the videos I have seen of the new Sprint Hero they all say version 1.5 I thought that CDMA would not be supported until build 1.6, I'd like to know if Donut will be on this version of Hero when it's released

Not necessarily! The main difference should be the radio, which can be flashed separately. However, if I were a Sprint Hero user, I can guarantee I wouldn't be the first to try it!
I'm still expecting the Sprint Hero to ship with Donut onboard, which means it will be the latest and greatest, so what will be more interesting is how the Sprint Hero ROM works on the GSM Hero!
Regards,
Dave
I forgot to mention this in my previous post but in the Videos I have seen online some of the Hero's back cover say Google and some do not, I know in all of the current videos that it does have the Sense UI but is there a difference between the Google Branded and non-Branded Hero?

I think Google decided since they were using the Sense UI (and perhaps adding their own apps over Googles) they couldn't put the "with Google" logo on the back.

It does NOT come loaded with Donut. It doesn't even have the new HTC update. At least, mine doesn't.
Yours is a pre-release version though. It still has 10 days before release and donut has been released in an OTA update.
On another note, has anyone with a Sprint Hero had any problems with the album being slow (not creating thumbnails) after swapping out the microsd?

Donut is being released via an OTA update for the G1 and the MyTouch. There's nothing so far about any other Android phones getting an OTA update. Of course, if you just mean that Donut is in the wild, so the "release" Sprint Hero may have Donut preinstalled, I concur!

Dave

I hope so. I haven't had the album issue, but I have experienced an issue with Exchange contacts and their relation to Facebook. So first off, it is very annoying to have to go and re-associate FB contacts with those that are already in my phone. But second, once I do that, my Exchange server cannot sync contacts anymore. It errors out every time. Now, I don't know if that is something on the Exchange end, or on the phone end.
On a completely separate note, my phone didn't come with Pandora pre-installed, although I believe the release versions will. What's interesting is that when I do a search for it in the Android market, it can't find anything, even though it's available. I even tested it on a myTouch, and it came up right away. Interesting....

sprint hero does have a firmware update option in the "about phone". is htc update different?
Does anyone know if the sprint htc hero plays youtube in high quality over EVDO..? or will we need a root to puch the file to trick it into being WIFI?
Also, I notice dthat the sprint hero white flip clock does not flip like the GSM version. That kinda sucks! Taking the 3d out of tf3d..

The Flip clock was removed for everyone with the Firmware update, it sucks, but the clock before was laggy and awful, so it really is an improvement.
Just got my Sprint Hero
I can confirm that the Sprint HTC Hero does come with the 1.5 firmware and doing the update via system updates says that I have the newest firmware, so it may be a matter of HTC sending the update through sprint first to do OTA updates...
Does anyone know if there is a way to root the phone as of right now? I've been looking around a bunch but it just looks like the Euro versions are the ones people have successfully rooted. I just wanna root my phone before I put too much stuff on it and have to start over again anyway. Thanks!!
Anyone notice that the sprint htc hero gets hot as hell under normal/moderate use? What the hell is up with sprint phones and the overeating ****?! Also, battery is NOT as good as the GSM version but we already knew that was gonna happen! Damn CDMA!
I've been using mine all day and it hasn't gotten hot. And to who asked, it does play YouTube high quality over 3g.

My Sprint Diamond runs much hotter than my Sprint Hero. I've got them side-by-side here right now.
Now... time to start hacking this thing...
Maybe I got a BUM unit then. or maybe a burn in period..? Who the hell knows. All I know is its gets hotter than your average phone would get. Has anyone noticed any type of heat increase over use?

Already a software update for the MyTouch Slide

This morning when I woke up to look at the time on my myTouch Slide I had a pop up saying there was a software update available so of course I downloaded it. After the download and install the phone rebooted and I received another pop up that said "Install complete. Thank you for choosing T-Mobile" does anyone know what the software update was for? I haven't noticed anything different.
Did you have the beta firmware or do you have the production firmware?
slide update
The update was the full release that will be on the phones for sale. Officially it was to improve performance and just the final build. Because it was the official final build you should now see more apps available in the market that are made for 2.1 and above.
FULL FLASH in your browser! That was a nice surprise that nobody mentioned...
nothing else major comes to mind. They may have added some htc sense widgets but Im not sure if I just missed them the first few days I had the phone..

Wait a minute...you've got the MyTouch Slide ahead of release? And it has Flash?! Way to go TMo. I know a bunch of people are underwhelmed by this phone because it's not a Snapdragon, but TMo is targeting this phone for the mainstream. If it runs smooth, I may just snap it up. But I'm curious about "Project Emerald."
who needs a snapdragon
My coworker has a Nexus and we run a lot of comparisons between my slide and his (n1). (we both work for Tmo)
-faster downloads according to speedtest.net app on MyTouch Slide
-better screen touch sensitivity on MyTouch Slide
-led camera flashligh apps for MyTouch Slide (only on Nexus if you root)
I personally feel the keyboard is pointless because swype and the android keyboard work so well... I would rather have a thinner phone.. but its still work buying. After a week or so I love the phone.
Camera quality is great! Not every photo will be the best because it is still a phone... but I have taken some really great quality photos.
I do not even see the point in rooting this phone with all the available features.. Froyo (android 2.2) will be available for this phone sometime this year which will add wireless tethering and hot spots..

A rooted phone is always faster than its stock counter-part, a stock G1 is much faster than a stock one...Even if both are on diff firmware. For ex donut roms for it pretty much superior in every way. A rooted MTS will be even faster, esp when various optimizations are applied to the stock ROM. A iPhone is fast but a jailbroken one is just better. Plus a rooted phone will allow you to really make your phone yours.

I understand and have seen this hands on.. however.. how about all of the benchmark results with froyo and the new jit component.... they are blowing the doors off of previous roms, stock and modded i assume.. I havent read into this heavily so I hate to be missing something... but this was my point about why bother rooting when froyo should be achieving these peak speeds that were previously only achievable through rooting..
If a dev can beat froyos speeds, while providing full functionality and then some.. then sure I am game.. but perhaps android is finally reaching its full potential and maximizing its hardware.. and all of these developers can start spending their time on making better widgets! (one can dream)

Come on t-mo will block tethering... we didnt alow it before why would we now because of froyo, come on use your head... I could be wrong but think of it like this...
webconnects 24.99-49.99/monthly
or
tethering FREE
-What do you think a provider will allow?
So root is very necessary every time when you buy a phone from a carrier... its their phone and.... root = your phone!

Blackberry and win mo phones ( HD 2) tether with t mobile and are not blocked... A very very low percentage of customers even understand what tethering is... So yes tmo would rather sell web connect... But no they do not currently block the phones they currently sell with tethering... Of course tech support will definitely not help you with it.

I was told by two employees (one was a manager) that the MyTouch Slide would be the first phone that allowed tethering. The phone I looked at had easytether installed on it so that is why I asked.
They may just be saying that because easytether was on the market. Most of the rep's I have talked to have been a little loose on details with me (LIKE THE PRICE!!!).
That won't get froyo 2.2 for a long time. May be even a year

Nothing that isn't openly available on the web. Apparently HTC had a newsletter which explicitly stated that Froyo for Slide would be pushed as an OTA by T-Mobile in December. So I made this post to keep myself informed... most people will come here and make a post, which I'll see via email ASAP.

Well that's going to depend on which ROM they are using. Something like CR_MOD and Slidemeroot *will* receive the notification to update. Others, like CyanogenMod Rom's will not since they are missing the APN setting and a few other prerequisites for update notifications. I haven't tried but will see if I add the FOTA APN maybe I'll get the notification (unless some one knows that won't work).

That's the thing, the Slidemeroot ROM will receive OTA messages from T-Mobile that are bogus and will unroot your phone. This is why I do not want any Slidemeroot users to post that they have an update available.
well i have CM6.1 on here. But i suppose once the new OTA for froyo comes out, we'll be able to get some true slide Froyo ROMs out, so it won't be a big deal if i can't get the OTA to my phone anyway lol.
unrooted~
I unrooted anticipating Froyo cause all I kept reading was DECEMBER 15th. and well thats only for the MT3G not the slide. Damn misinformed Tmobile reps. putting out bad info that gets spread like wildfire on the web.
So I HTC, got the number from Tmo Rep. Talked to Tech Support there and the update that just went out is only for MyTouch 3G, NOT THE SLIDE. HTC is waiting for TMOBILE to ask for the Update for the slide, which they have NOT. Then HTC makes it and test it, get payment and approval from Tmobile and then get the okay to pust the update to customers. So Tmobile starts the update ball rolling and then has to push it out after HTC/Android is done with it. The information can't be much more official than that. Hope this clears everything up for anyone who can't get proper answers to their questions. Not questions about a phone we don't have.

Recent article from Tmonews:
With news of the myTouch 3G LE and Fender editions prepping to receive their Android 2.2 update, plenty of myTouch Slide customers are left wondering when is their turn. Well the good news it’s being worked on, the bad news is we’re hearing exactly what kind of trouble is delaying the update. Apparently there are two problems holding up the public release:
1) Wi-Fi calling doesn’t work 100% of the time, we’re not sure what that means, if calls are dropping or not starting at all on Wi-Fi but we know it’s holding up release.
2) The OTA update is right now being directed to the wrong partition, which doesn’t have enough memory to process the update.
We received word that HTC is aware of both of these problems and is actively working on a fix. No release date time frame was given but as soon as we hear more, we’ll drop the news right away!

Not pointless; there's the other 99% of the Aria users who would benefit from the 2.2 upgrade on the Aria. Of them probably 95% don't even know there are different versions of Android, but anywho...
My wife would be included.. I don't mess with her laptops, phones, etc, unless she needs me to, and her Aria runs great as is, but it'd run better on 2.2
does anyone know whether it's possible to use the Froyo firmware from the OTA update and flash it via a PC?
I'm using an Optus Aria (Australia) and I'd like to have Froyo, but would also like to keep it as stock as possible.
I think it's going to be a while before Optus comes out with the Froyo update.
Alternatively, is there any way to trick the phone into thinking it's an unbranded phone and then allowing the OTA update?

This may be a stupid question, but that's been posted on XDA? If so, I'll find it myself, no worries; however, I was just curious as I just got a root Aria off of eBay for simply playing around with Android hacking, etc.
Just didn't want to take the risk of bricking my everyday phone or screwing something functionally to the point where it works but is annoying.
Hi everyone, I'm located in Malaysia and I've just begun downloading the Froyo update via FOTA. I'll update this thread once the installation is complete.
For anyone interested, my Aria is stock 100%. Not rooted ever. My intention is to compare 2.1 and 2.2 on the Aria and see if there is a significant difference, although App2SD and Wifi Tethering are already good enough reasons to switch......
I'll post back again.
Well, I've updated successfully to the new Froyo. The experience wasn't bad or anything. If anything it was simple and quick. Once the update was downloaded OTA, the installation only took 3-5 minutes in which the screen would stay on for the most part (displaying a "syncing" icon of sorts). I did have a problem with the installation once it was done, the HTC Sense couldn't boot up. It just kept force closing itself when it couldn't load. To fix the problem I had to do a hard reset (this is why you should back up your data prior to updating). Once that was done, I was navigating my Aria with relative ease.
What are the changes I've noticed so far? Plenty! If you're like me and have never rooted your phone, you probably would've missed out on a lot (just like I did). Here's a list of what I've encountered so far.
1) Wallpapers for the "Lock-Screen" is no longer separate from your Home wallpaper. Might be a bad thing for some but I never really cared for it anyway.
2) Live Wallpapers are SUPPORTED now! Something I've been looking for a while. Now I can use timester on my Aria.
3) It has all the usual 2.2 updates like Wifi Tethering, App2SD, App Sharing, etc. Not lacking anything there.
4) New HTC Sense widgets (so far I've spotted a new SMS widget which is a lot nicer than the "Rolodex" widget)
5) Comes with Google Voice search, Google Navigation, Google Car Dock, New Gmail app and a host of other things.
In terms of stability, well its an OEM released ROM so I doubt there'll be any problems.
Well that was just my quick run through on the 2.2. Definitely worthwhile the wait and I'm glad its out now.
So how do I apply this to my stock Att aria??

This update was not meant for an AT&T branded Aria. It is for the Southeast Asia Aria.

Well I'm officially an idiot (yes, it has been said before ), but the Liberated Aria Froyo ROM is from the Gratia and on Froyo.
Yes, that's pointing the obvious, but I'm sure people may have missed that (I clearly did, though I had no idea how/why... ).
So when this does come officially, rooting is lost? Or is it just a matter of time before a new method is developed?

Rooting will be lossed but this update more then likely will be manual for at&t brands.
Signatures are fancy.
Guys, Just use the liberated ROM. The new hboot will just screw your rooting process over. OTA updates suck anways. AT&T bloatware.

but arent some of the roms gimped in some ways?
i am rooted now, but didn't use roms since there always seemed to be something missing or something that didnt work quite right.
i might just do the ota update when it comes.
will i lose any data/apps with the ota update?
do i have to put it back to stock first?

I used Liberated Froyo for a few weeks, but it was a battery draining, laggy, slow, gimpy WiFi-d piece of junk. Use CM! But if you like Sense, I don't know what to tell you. I would NOT recommend Liberated Aria Froyo.

Me neither. But after a research I realized that it becomes slower because of the Live Wallpapers, even when you're not using them. I installed the LW zip on the stock rom and it became slow. So that's why the FROYO rom is the way it is. If someone could disable that I believe it could run a lot faster.

I don't want to play the devil's advocate... but I wouldn't talk so down upon a great ROM since I have had no problems with it being slow and laggy, no problems with the WiFi (on both kernels), and my battery lasts just as long as it does with CM6 (about a day (18 hours) to a day and a half without a charge, depending no my overall usage) with a fair amount of e-mails and texts coming in, calls everyday, and moderate gaming and internet usage (I have WiFi set to sleep every 15 minutes, mobile data to turn on when WiFi is off, both GPS and network locations are on, background data and automatic syncing is also on)....
Maybe I'm lucky? ...
So while CM has it's quirks and advantages... don't just shoot down the other ROM...
EDIT: Oh, and I don't use SetCPU to underclock when sleeping.

is the bolded stuff options on 2.1, 2.2 or just custom roms?

I found a TMO store with the Gingerbread SDCARDS but>>

I found a store in my town that had the SD Card gingerbread update so I went there today. While I was waiting to be seen, I saw a My Touch 4g get updated using the SD Card by a customer service person. It took about 10 minutes. I was encouraged to see how quick it took. Now it was my turn. The customer service (C/S) who assisted me was a former tech support person for Tmoble who was now working in a store. She was very knowledgeable and very nice. She took my sdcard out and put in the gingerbread sdcard. The update started. There was about 10 steps that the update had to go through. The first step was 'bootloader'. The C/S said that this was the first G2 that she has done. She said she had done her My Touch 4g Slide and the update went smooth so again I was encouraged. I was happy to not have to wait for the OTA.
Well the update started on the first step and 45 minutes later, it was still on the first step. So she stopped the update to allow me to do a factory reset of my phone and I did so. The store had two gingerbread sdcards so she tried the second one on my phone. I went to starbucks for coffee and 20 minutes later, the update was still stuck on the first step. So, she told me that there was something wrong. She asked me if I had done anything to the phone? I said no. I told her that this G2 was a replacement phone that I had just recieved about a month ago because my first G2 stop charging. Well she gave up and so did I.
I called TMO C/S and they said that they had no record of the G2's having problems with the store gingerbread sdcards. He first asked me if I had any third party apps on my phone, I said no. They told me that the cards did not come from them but they came from HTC. So, I called HTC. The guy there commenced to reading the press release that we all have read a thousands times about being able to go to the store and get gingerbread after August 6. He also told me that he had no record of G2's having problems getting the update at the stores. I asked him if the same SD Card was to be used on the My Touch and on the G2? He said that he did not know and yes he was tech support . He advised me to call HTC headquarters at a different number and ask them that but they were closed.
I know some of you are gonna tell me to do the update myself with the links that are eveywhere on the web. Well, I'm not gonna do that. Tmo and HTC gotta get it together. They are running a business and they MUST do what they say they gonna do. I know that TMO don't have to provide any updates, I know this but they are offiering the updates and they tell us to wait for the OTA or go to a store after the Aug 6. Well I did that, I got nothing. By the way, there are three TMO stores in my town and only one had the SDCARDS. Peace
Well they DON'T know what they are doing otherwise the custom rom community wouldn't be as big as it is if they were able to get anything right themselves. So your **** out of luck. Let us know when you want a good working phone.

That's being kinda rude. If he doesn't want to root or apply manually he doesn't have to. He's just telling us what happened. No need to be rude.
OP, if the SDcard update didn't work, you should wait and see if you can get the OTA. If the OTA isn't working for your device either, you should contact T-mobile and express that you'd like a phone with 2.3 or will properly update to 2.3, assuming that you don't want to root or manually apply the update yourself.
That's ridiculous....minus the rude part, it is true tmobile and htc would much rather see you buy one of their newer phones and renew your contact than get a good working update. Try custom roms if you can...the vision is one of the easiest to root and stable when rooted and there are hundreds of roms around, I'm sure theres some rom gingerbread flavored you'll like.

Whether you choose to root or not, it's your device and you can do what you want with it. If you want the stock T-mo experience, then they should give you what they promised you. Good luck!
While I disagree with you rooting (many of the problems here are people who shouldn't even need to root in the first place, it's not for everybody), I don't understand why you wouldn't manually update. Download the file, name it update.zip, put on your sd card root, press a few buttons, done!

I may have the answer. You said that you had received the phone as a replacement. Did it already have gingerbread on it? Remember that some of the phones people were getting as replacements had gingerbread 2.3.3 on them and if your phone was one of those you can't update from 2.3.3 to the final release which is 2.3.4. Just a thought.

I am very familar with rooting. I rooted my G1 within 5 months of having it and it stayed rooted for a year and half more until I retired it and got the G2. The reason I chose not to root my G2 was because I did not want to be contastantly flashing and removing roms and fixing issues. I got tired of baby sitting my G1. I have other things to do.

So... you tried a bunch of half-baked "roms" made by a bunch of kiddies who don't know what they're doing and found it a royal PITA. Ever heard of a "superstock" system image? Its basically the factory image with a few goodies added in, specifically ROOT. It doesn't require any "babysitting", but opens the door for some amount of enhancement, like the ability to change your hosts file (usually used to block spam), or the ability to delete useless cruft from the system image (i.e., you don't like the gmail application? Delete it.). You don't have to go with a full out special brownies system, but it is nice to at least gain control of what you own.
The store I work at finally got the SD cards to update, but the G2 update will not install.
The update works fine on the mytouch 4g, so the card is goood.
Well that sucks. Hope you get the issue resolved soon.
Looks like I figured it out. The G2 would only update if the battery was %100 charged.
Any less and it would freeze during the update.
Now that I know the update works I'll try and post the files when I get home.
Thanks atlp99!
I'd really like to get my hands on that file. I assume it is a pc10img.zip ? Seems like this is the best solution for those of us running the 2.3.3 leak...
G2 2.3.4 update pc10img
Here is the G2 update off of the micro sd cards the stores are receiving.

Works for 2.3.3 leak!
Just used this file to update my G2 running the 2.3.3 "leaked" gingerbread rom. No problems. Just slip the file into your root directory, and hold the volume down while turning the phone on. Piece of cake. You will lose your application data, of course, but you'll be updated...

No less than a day after I suck it up and downgrade my G2 to 2.2 so I can update (using update.zip) to 2.3.4 does the PC10IMG.zip get posted. My lack of patience kicked in. Nevertheless, thank you for posting this!

Having my battery at 100 percent did not work for me. The update still just sat there looking at me. This is crazy buy while I was trying to figure out what the problem was. I decided to do checkin and about 5 minutes later, I got the updae OTA
