I wanted to see if anyone has been able to have by default high res youtube playback on 3g connection. I know that the youtube app will play higher resolution over wifi but on my old htc devices I was able to stream high definition over 3g.

any other word on this. Will there have to be ann app for it. It sux having to watch the awful quality.
this reminds me of the my old iPhone3g,,,, it sucks having to watch youtube in that kind of resolution,,, and with the phone not supporting flash yet... there is no other option
Bump again for this topic. I'm surprised it's not talked about more.
I just came from a Samsung Captivate and it has an option to run video in HD. It took a little longer to load the film, but was well worth it!

Yes, just people with HTC devices are able to watch HQ videos...
That sucks! I would have just gotten the HTC Surround if it didn't look so cheap and have such bad reviews.
We can only hope that either MS or a developer can come up with some software to fix this... as I wouldn't see this as being a hardware issue.
Buy a "RealTube" app, works fine on any handset.

Hi, A big problem I had with the iPhone was the video compression when streaming video in applications such as youtube.
I thought there would be less or no compression on the Nexus One since the higher resolution makes the video look even more appalling and I can't even make out what's happening.
I was wondering whether there was an option or an app which lets me disable this or lessen the compression so that I can actually make out what's happening in a video rather than staring intently at blocks and smudges. (forgive me for hypocritically pointing out the irony that that's what we do: [pixels and colours])
once you choose a video in youtube press Menu > watch in high quality. and prepare to be amazed.
Yeah the HQ videos look amazing, i havent tried other sites yet. The video adobe put out of flash running on Android looked pretty damn good too, cant wait for that.

After i set it to HQ its played all the videos in that format as far as i can tell, obviously it depends on the quality of the video the person uploaded

But what about things like the BBC Iplayer app, and images on the web?
browser images are not compressed at all. I dont know about iplayer i never tried it.

The bitrate of a given video stream in a given app has next to nothing to do with the native resolution of the screen you display it on.
Specifically, most mobile video streaming app will ask for a low bitrate (highly compressed, grungy looking) stream when they detect that the device in not on wi-fi and will request a higher bitrate stream when on wi-fi, if you are lucky (I.E. in the android youtube app) they will let you override this automatic choice.
I.E. video quality is a function of the source streams available, the app requesting/displaying the stream and the bandwidth available on the device's network connection.
Only _after_ all of that is it possible for the screen to make much difference (and they generally don't).

Hmm, this sucks. According to my brother all UK networks compress images and videos (presumably so they don't have to upgrade their basestations/backhaul anytime soon ¬¬), with the possible exception of Three UK as they have the largest bandwidth available in the UK.
I guess there's no way around that, unless there's some sort of proxy or something?

Thats right Three UK doesn't as i get same quality of the video as on WiFi.
Does anyone else know how we can get HD you tube, it seems crazy now that you tube is ully supporting HD videos that we cant use our HD phone to watch them insteam we get to stream rubbish quality videos???

You do know that the HD2 in this phone's moniker doesn't mean that it actually decodes HD video?

Likely 480p or some derivative of it for bandwidth reasons.
Before Youtube made the resolution-selector available, HQ was defined as fmt=18, which I believe was 480x360 or something

Has anyone tried using the HDMI feature? I just received my cable yesterday and was able to view anything in my gallery and youtube. The only thing that bothered me is that everything was output in 480p. (I had youtube set to HQ and it made no difference)
Does anyone know if the phone can output at a higher resolution?

it's supposed to be possible to output 1080p, thats what all the specs i have seen for the phone say

Thats what I thought. I was unable to get anything higher that 480p though. My tv is 1080p 120hz.

I doubt youtube even HQ is streaming in 1080p
EDIT: In fact, it'd be my guess the max output resolution is probly 720p (considering it can capture in 720p)
his gallery should be higher rez though. i doubt thsi phone has the power to play 720p compressed.
The max resolution on the camera's video capture is 1280x720, which is 720p. So I doubt the phone will output anything higher (like 1080p/i). In fact, I saw one reviewer that stated that he "thought" the phone *only* outputs 720p, upconverting any video to that resolution. But I don't think that has been verified. What I *can* verify is that video shot with the camera at 720p and shown on an HDTV shows EXTREME compression artifacts to the point that a lower resolution will probably give better results (although you will not get the 16:9 aspect ratio).
What about regular HD movies in 1080p/i that are saved onto your sd card. How did those do on your hdtv. Did they come out choppy or compressed at all? I'm waiting to get my hdmi cable to test it out myself.

Actually the specs never say 1080p, they say 720p. And from what i've seen that's only when outputting pics and videos form the gallery player.
We want to get netflix on our Evos and do the output to our TV's.
I wonder how the outout will look on that?

I remember seeing a post on engadget a couple weeks back with a video demoing the ability to play youtube hq through HDMI. they were watching a video that had paint splashing around in slow motion. It looked great! Last night I tried to watch a couple of youtube videos that were hq quality with the hdmi cable plugged into my tv and they looked horrible. I thought it might be a setting on the phone, but I could not find one.

I have the same problem with youtube. It seems that it does not use 720p, even in "HD", it seems the "HD" is actually 480p (the EVO screen resolution). Another problem with youtube on EVO (as opposed to TP2) is that unless you click "HD" there is no way to stretch the video to full screen, even when viewed on the EVO screen. This is one of the most unfortunate things I've found when trying to impress my iPhone loving friends. On the TP2, youtube was surprisingly excellent, it filled the entire screen and looked fantastic (without an "HD" option) the EVO seems to have actually taken a step back (albeit a small step) in that department.
While using the HDMI cable to my TV, it will output 720p videos (taken with the phone camera or made with handbreak.) However, it will not scale anything up. So if you create a video at the 800x480 EVO screen resolution, it will display in the center of your TV (not fill the entire screen.) I've not yet tried 1080p, considering the 1600mbs (realistic) encoding limitation, I don't think 1080p will be a good idea even if it does work, just stick with 720p.

I'm still not sure if I'm getting an EVO or Streak, but both have HDMI, and either way, I want to be able to hook my device up to a monitor and use it in the same fashion that I would my netbook (i.e. light web browsing, very light office/doc work, maybe some light games).
Basically, I'm looking to get rid of my netbook and replace it with my new smartphone...but I have to break out to a larger display from time to time.

FYI: that android link goes to the post with a direct download to an .apk file that replaces your current youtube with the requested youtube hq. you still need to select high quality but it comes in the form of a button directly on the screen rather than going into the menu. worked like a champ and worth the quick fix.

Great, I switched to the youtube HQ app and now playback stutters in HQ mode. The old app played HQ much smoother. I was only looking to have the HQ setting be permanent, but I'd rather deal with having to set it manually than the crap I'm getting now
edit: nm, seems to have fixed itself! That always happens after I ask in public how to fix something..
double edit: or rather, it seems to be one video in particular that plays stuttery.. oh well, whatever..

Hey guys I'm not sure if you've noticed but with the latest YouTube app update with the new ui, it seems the video quality is streaming in HD but at 720p. I can definitely tell just by watching a video, it's quite jaggy then reversing to the older app it's back to how it should be.
Does anyone else have this problem? I really like the new ui and it's features especially how you are scrolling around, click a video and when you finish and go back it's exactly where you were scrolling to. Unlike the old version where when you finish and go back it's suddenly way up on the list and you've lost where you're up to!

Well, you're not the only one. I love the new YouTube app in that you're able to search for new videos while the current video is playing, but the video (even fullscreen) looks like ****e!!..particularly on the Nexus 10 with such an awesome display resolution.
I don't know what the deal is, but you're not alone.

Considering we have 4K video on YouTube, this is a disgrace. We should be able to stream EVERY quality, not only standard, 720P or 1080P.
